Park Hae-jin turns psychopath for action-crime drama
by javabeans
Park Hae-jin is making the most of his recent wave of popularity (thanks, You From Another Star) to line up his next drama after just wrapping on Doctor Stranger: He’ll be doing a crime-action drama on cable station OCN titled Bad Boys, which he’d previously been considering and has now confirmed.
He’ll be stretching his range to play a genius psychopath who hides that side behind an innocent face and picks up the moniker “youngest ever serial killer.” Because that’s a thing we should be trying to aim for earlier in life now? With an IQ of 160, the character is a member of Mensa with a PhD in mathematics and philosophy.
I’ve just seen Gap-dong so I’m not necessarily hopping to see more of the same, although Park Hae-jin describes the role as multidimensional and layered. And the drama may differ from Gap-dong by being about more than catching a serial killer on the loose: The bad boys of the title refer to a group of violent criminals who are brought together by a detective to work on “an even greater evil.” Okay, so maybe it IS a lot like Gap-dong where you use the serial killer to catch the other serial killer… but I remain encouraged by the fact that the writer, Han Jung-hoon, worked on the Vampire Prosecutor series, which was stylish and solid as a slick crime procedural. Gap-dong was an interesting detailed character study, perhaps, but Vampire Prosecutor at least had plot!
Bad Boys will be an 11-episode drama and begins shooting in July. It premieres in October.

it Sounds really good and I'm actually really looking foreward to it but, psychopath, use evil to catch a greater evil (like recognizes like) innocent appearing serial killer... straight away a thought of gapdong. I really enjoyed Gapdong and i hope that bad boys is going to take a different d irection. Also, since its sounds so similiar it will probably be compared, people are going to have pretty high expectations of park hae jin after lee joons performance. (like, damn, throw that kid an oscar or something.) Anyway hope this turns out well

Since I'm pretty disappointed with Gap-dong, the promotion and the trailers are far more thrilling than the drama itself. Hngg... Maybe my expectation for GD was too high. I hope this will be mooore better than Gap-dong. Anyways, very glad to see Park Hae-jin again soon. Good luck!~~

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at "genius psychopath." I mean, really now? This is where we've reached with the 'genius' characters?

I won't even surprised if dramaland someday decides to make "genius librarian who could remember all the books and their places" or "genius hairstylist who could diagnose diseases just by touching the hairs just like Hoon in Dr. Stranger"

Perhaps he wants us to forget that it existed so he's movin' on quick!
At least he'll be a serial killer this time, albeit a genius one.

Park Hae Jin, from lovesick chaebol to genius revengeful surgeon to serial killer. At least he tries different characters to avoid typecast. I'm happy to see him more.
I'm laughing at "youngest ever serial killer" like it was some sort of achievement. LOL

I'm glad he plays diffrent type of characters, and he was meant to play a psyhopath in Man from teh Stars so now he actually has teh chance and even more complex than that one

Yessss! He accepted! I was really hoping that he would and so glad that it's confirmed now. :D
I just finished watching Dr Stranger and i loved his character in the drama. He plays it so well! In fact his acting in this drama made me become an even bigger fan of him. Haha after the show ended I was about to go into withdrawal symptoms thinking. I wouldn't be able to see him in another drama after a long time. But then "bam!" i saw this piece of news and it totally made my day!
Yaaaay for more Hae Jin! <3 Can't wait for oct. 8D

Yay, I'm happy that Park Hae Jin has been getting a lot of roles lately. ^^
This new drama sounds good.
Only 11 EPs to watch?! Totally doable.
Just hope the plot is tight and exciting! :)

The plot is more like Hannibal than Gabdong though. And Park Hae Jin's character is like Hannibal Lecter. The genius Psycopath who has a high IQ. And his the male lead too just like Hannibal. So I guess the the story will focus and revolve around PHJ psychopath character.

Not sure yet how I feel about this drama.
I'm not quite sure yet if Park Hae-jin is quite ready to carry a drama yet, or if that's producers just going with the flow (he's been in two successful dramas after all – though one was total crap though – and is gorgeous of course). Not saying he hasn't got the talent, but I haven't seen enough of him yet.
Also not so keen on the plot so far... sick of the "genius", and, genius psychopath??? Not sure what to make of that. It could work, if it's superbly made. I would almost rather want this in the hands of excellent filmmaker, made into a film with guts and TV-related restrictions. Or if a J-drama director would make this, since there have been some excellent, dark short series there (11 eps being standard in Japan).
On the up, I kind of like that it's only 11 episodes and is going to have to be different from most K-dramas in that sense. That might make the plot tighter and hopefully better.
I'll keep my mind open, and see if future teasers tickle my fancy.

Well i'm totally anticipating this one because i love this type of shows and i'm glad dramaland started producing something like that...i sense that the psyhopats will eventually accept the police officer offer aka deal to save tehir lives or even more to it,and why not to outsmart the guy who made the Detective form this group...not a surprse that psyhopath think about themselves as the best and when other one beats them in their pride and ego that must hurt and they won't stand by and i'm going to enjoy this kind of dark ride...Park Hae Jinw as meant to play a psyhopath in Man From the Stars if thewhole cast stuff din't happened so i'm quite curious what type of chilling character will he bring to life...

On board. Sociopaths/psychopaths are so repulsively fascinating... especially when combined with above average intelligence. The one good thing they provide us is some insight into how minds work -and don't work.

This premise is actually reminding me of the US show Breakout Kings. Using a group of different criminals who specialize in different areas to catch other criminals. Is that what they're going for?

if he could keep us on the edge as a good guy, I am scared to even think what he can do as a bad guy. seriously, in Man From the Stars, the suspense didn ´t come from the evil brother but from the brave, outrageous actions of Hwi kyung and how well Park Hae Jin brought out what drove him and all those moments, especially the hospital, were played well. I mean, he just lies still and my hair is still standing up. it was so nerve-wrecking I almost lost it.
but with him I still couldn´t get past the thought "He is just an actor! Not the character!" (maybe to calm myself down) but right now when Watching High School King Of Savvy, I see the character and when the episode ends I think: "Oh wait, but he is an actor." but Hae Jin is good nevertheless

I like Park Hae Jin, but I must admit I have long wanted to see Lee Seung Gi play such a role. I think he can look really mean when he puts on a serious face, and then that smile! I think the contrast would be so interesting. Park Hae Jin has an air of innocence about him that brings the same contrast.
