Still working on Polyglit, but in oowrking on polyglit my apartment has become messy, so I'm trying to clean it. >.<;; Funding starts on the 15th this month on Indiegogo. If you can spare even 5 dollars, =P I'd appreciate it. =P I really do want to focus on drama-related books and diversity. If you can donate on Jyly 15th, it'll look like the roject has momentum.

Marriage Not Dating is finally a drama I hope will not go down in quality. It's smart writing with good acting.

Fated to Love you too.

And no to Yoona as Nodame. I said it last week.... Say Heads won't be cursed with capping Nodame... @KBS_drama 1988-Jan-07 임주은씨은 짱 노다메 (Nodame) 입니다! 진짜 왕장 노다메를 연극 할 거예요. >.<;; Why kBS, why. Quality, please.

Kim Seul Gi as Nodame would also be acceptable. I'd even take Min Do-Hee in the lead role instead... Even Eunji... but no... plus, Nodame comes from Osaka originally, so maybe someone who can speak the native satoori well of Kyeongsangnamdo, at least?

Trot Lovers has a slower pacing than I expected. However, it is like how the description Choon Hee's singing is said to be, high on heart, low on technique, but it hooks you despite that.

Joseon Gunman... need to watch episode 5 and 6. His father finally died! Yay. I hope they get the revenge plot basics underway or I'm ditching.

And I'm watching Fated to Love You (Korean version), which is good, but can still sink horribly. I like it better than the original, though I'm still apprehensive about the car bit coming up. (No spoilers... please. Code it! Code it. I know you are smart enough to.)

Also finished Shinigami-kun which was good. I kinda want the manga... if I get a chance, I'd ask for the license.

Also, Watashi no Kirai na Tantei, which has light novels, which reminds me of all the light novels I heard of, but never got a chance to read because apparently Japanese mystery doesn't "sell".

Still watching Love Myself or You which is lagging (Maybe the next episode will be better) and Fall in Love with Me, which is also lagging.

If you want a woman with man sickness really bad, you don't have to look further than Fall in Love with Me. Miao Miao is like Man Sickness verging on Man Death, I think she is pretty close to Man Death right now. Still watching it, despite that.

What's interesting is both of these dramas deal with anxiety, so I'm wondering if they are trying to make a statement about mental health? I know the history with mental health in East Asia isn't that stellar.

Intentional or not "No, No, No!" indicates an Apink preference!

Totally on board for Eunji but given how busy she is, I really doubt she can take this role.

not really sure if anyone else in APink can act as great as her so can't really comment on the other 5 members

My ranking, since the top pick refused is:
1. Im Joo Eun
2. Kim Seul Gi
3. Go Ara (She needs a bit more training in some areas, but I so think she could pull it off, plus she already cut her hair.) I know she took a role, but TT I can dream.
4. Min Do-Hee (Promote her! I think she could do it!)
5. Eunji of Pink She doesn't have the full range, but I think she's the type to be able to grow into it if they really need an idol.

She's played mooney, she's played angry, and she's done a fair range so far. Plus she has a background in music.

Im Joo Eun is the best of the lot, I think. She showed her evil side in Empress Ki. And then in Wild Romance she was able to moon over the guy in a cute, uncreepy way that still set boundaries, which is something that Nodmae struggles with. And she is also shown being dirty, so I could totally believe her in the role. She can play manic, depressed, understated, mooney, and all of the range, plus her acting is subtle. She can do sudden and double-sided moods, which is critical to Nodame and throw fits. She has the range t show Nodame as a character.

Which is why I prioritized her in the Korean message to KBS.

I wouldn't bet on it. There's been SO much backlash against this casting - both on SK and international sites. Even if SM tries to push it, I think the production company will reconsider. This is a very high profile and much-discussed remake; they have to be more careful.

Then again, the fact that they're considering Yoona in the first place doesn't bode well for their judgement.

I saw someone on Soompi suggest Kim Go-Eun who was recently i the movie Monster.
She's a relative newbie but is gaining quick notoriety.

I haven't started watching Josen Gunman (Ninja Cowboy) yet, so I can't be accused of spoilers.

But I did wonder for a moment reading Kim Yoonmi's post why someone's death was followed by "Yeah!"

I am sure he deserved it. Yoonmi has excellent judgement. I'll be befuddled about that reference until I get around to watching the show.

You have to watch episode 1, and then you will get it as soon as you see that person and then by episode 4, you'll be like, "Die already." but for a different reason than the one you're thinking.

Is it really being called Ninja Cowboy??? O.o;;; That smacks of so many bad things I have to say about that.

He was slated to die as soon as you saw him anyway. (Avoiding spoilers) He should have died by the end of week 1 or at least at the top of Week 2.

I don't really get the fixation with having the father killed off as soon as possible just because it was in the description. I've said this before, but I think it was a smart decision to build the world and character relationships before shoving a plot point down my throat that I wasn't given the time to care for. The episodes leading to the death told a story of their own that I appreciate more now that we're starting a new chapter.

0

@Chandler Didn't I say to avoid spoilers? I'm trying to give that courtesy to someone who didn't watch the show yet and doesn't quite know the plot yet. I coded it, couldn't you do the same?

0

@Kim Yoonmi

I'm genuinely sorry if you feel that I spoiled things. I didn't mean to. However, you wrote earlier, "His father finally died!" so I'm not sure how my comment gave away any more than your comment did.

0

I watched all 4 episodes and don't get it either. The time spent was well worth the while to build and give depth to the characters involved, so that when finally "the event" happened, the audience is better able to empathise with the characters. If the person died as soon as Yoonmi wanted, then I don't think I will feel the loss and pain as much as I did, so the writers did good in this case. Also want to say that flashbacks are not always effective and may only serve to slow down or bog down the story, especially if the writers have a lot of story to tell in the future episodes.

I felt like someone had killed a puppy when they announced Yonna was going to play Nodame. I recently just started Japanese dramas a few months ago, Nodame Cantabile was my first Japanese drama. I started it when the remake was first announced and everyone was going on about how awesome the original was. Nodame Cantabile is awesome and I think it deserves all the praise that everyone gives it. I also read the manga version of Nodame Cantabile and I actually prefer the drama version better. If SM has to take part in the production can't they cast Jung So Min?

Marriage not dating has a goos start. I'm also hoping it stays that way. Only pure rom-com that I've gotten hooked at at once in a long time.

I'm also a no to Yoona as Nodame. I liked her well enough in Prime minister and I and I have nothing against her as such. I just find her a bit.. to pretty and cute for the role? it sounds a little wrong, but I loved how nodame was quirky and fun. And you could see how she was trying to be cute without trying to be cute if it makes sense (no baby talk for instance). Saw someone suggested her as the lead violin player and I could really see that happening though.

I'm expecting the remake to nudge up the romance and the love triangle more than the original anyway. And not be as quirky all over. So maybe they will make it work? I don't know, guess we shal just have to wait and see.

I was hoping for recaps of Marriage, Not Dating, but then I realize how difficult recapping is, so it's not a demand nor quite a request, but an off-handed wish. I think given the other disappointing dramas as of late, it might be fresh to have a good drama people are excited about on the blog again. I think this drama (or hope this drama can deliver). Plus I like the black shirt in the second episode. =P The clothing is actually nice. I like the coordi.

I also like the fact that the main lead isn't a total push over and not totally desperate either, that there are clear layers to her, so it's not short on the feminism.

Nah, Yoona isn't decent enough for Kiyora (who is pretty cool, actually). I liked Mizukawa Asami's portrayal of Kiyora, and she rocked with Mine.

Yoona would be okay as Saiko, Chiaki's ex-girlfriend. But actually, it'd be best if Yoona stayed FAR AWAY from any Nodame remake.

It'd be much better if there were no Nodame remake.

<<Love Myself or You

Although I kind of like the lead actors, I have found this one to be like pretty much every TW drama out there.

The lead's inability to stay on her feet since she met the other half of the OTP has been terribly annoying. I'm all for skinship, but contrived scenarios just kill it.

And why can't they have the second female team up with the first? The (love) rival storyline has been done so many times, and it's just b o r i n g. Well, at least they had her acknowledge the lead after the competition, but I still think they are going the love rivalry route.

I'm not likely to stick this one out...

I am with you on Love Myself etc. I gave it a shot, but just like 95% of the Taiwan dramas I start, I gave up pretty quick.

Happy OT

I’m so excited for the World Cup final! GERMANY =) Cup needs to stay in Europe ;) But I feel a wee bit bad for Brazil! That was one hell of a humiliation -.- Mom and I were kind of speechless after the 4-0 (which we initially thought was a replay of 3-0^^) but then again…I’ve never been more relaxed watching a WC semi-final xD

But off to the Dramas of this week =)

Trot Lovers: It does nothing new and the rom-com clichés are there but I love it to bits =) Byul is my new favourite thing and her matchmaking is hilarious^^ Go little sis! I basically hate everyone in Shine Star except Geun Woo of course and Soo In is becoming bitchy 2nd lead faster than I thought -.-
Also: Eunji has such a great voice <3

HS King: I still haven’t quite recovered from the ending of ep8! *swoons some more* It was awesome! Though it bugs me a little that Min Suk is 18 when she’s 28. It’s not the gap itself but I wouldn’t be as uncomfortable if he were like 23 and she 33 but oh well I’m a goner anyway :D

Doctor Stranger: Oh thank god this mess is over :P I didn’t think that the last ep could trump all others in the WTF department but it did… You know it says a lot when I’d rather watch the ending of GG14D a 100 times instead of re-watching DS :P

YAAS: I really hope that Birkin Bitch and her dad get what they deserve next week! Despicable people -.- Oh and Chief Kang had that truck of doom coming :P

Joseon Gunman: LOVE IT SO MUCH <3 My new crack drama! I just can’t get enough of badass Lee Jun Ki wielding guns <3

Marriage not Dating: This show is so cute and hilarious + definitely a keeper! I love Ki Tae’s grandma already^^ The glee she had after Jang Mi left xD Priceless! Also how awesome was Jang Mi dozing off (+ snoring) while mom was rattling off what she wants for her son?! I was cackling :D

Nodame Cantabile: Because I want to be able to join in the whole casting discussion I started Nodame and… Yeah I can’t see Yoona pulling that one off! I can’t even really see Joo Won pulling it off and I love him! But ND is just wacky and over the top and so totally Japanese that I want to scream at them to just LET IT GO! The craziness that is NC is better left alone!

Variety:

RM: Much better air time distribution and fun games (photo missions are always great)! I loved the interactions and it’s so obvious that Kwangsoo, Ji Sung an Ji Hoon became good friends =)

1N2D S3: Holy crap Yu PD that backpacking trip is hard on the members! Put he’s also the ultimate troll making them leave stuff behind and telling them that the last hard route’ll take about 30 mins when it actually just took them 5 mins^^ That was just brilliant!

The problem is Nodame Cantabile is a cult drama which was immensely successful (remember there is a manga, films and an anime on top of the TV drama).

Orange Days, Pride and Honey and Clover are all solid productions and very much worth watching but their impact (at the time they screened and long-term) isn't anywhere near as great.

Nodame is seminal, for its genre, for the actors in it, for J-drama in general (it's likely to appear on any "Top 10 representative dramas of Japan" list). I have Japanese friends that tell me that's how they learned to love classical music!

I have no idea what Japanese drama or Korean drama I should watch next right now I feel like no J or K drama could live up to the epic awesomeness that was Hana Kimi. Anyone have any suggestions for dramas that are similar to Hana Kimi or dramas that you feel are just as awesome?

Other than Hana Kimi and Nodame Cantabile, the dramas that fall into the quirky, way-out-there category for me are:

11 Nin mo Iru!
Kimi wa Petto
Love Shuffle

The latter two definitely have cult following, 11 Nin mo Iru! is not very well known, perhaps because it's a family drama.

Possibly Q10 and Yokai Ningen Bem, which are good but perhaps not quite at the same level of awesome.

I think Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge and Nobuta wo Produce might qualify too, but I haven't finished YNSH and never got into NWP (both seem to be well loved though).

Ahh Kimi wa Petto is love~~

The manga is one of my favourites but I really couldn't get into the Korean movie adaptation... something about it felt off to me. It's probably the cult following thing about loving only the original ahaha

Gokusen is awesome if you love a large ensemble cast like Hana-Kimi. The first will forever be my favourite but I'm a huge MatsuJun fan.

0

They could have managed a good film (I don't think this one is quite as un-adaptable as Nodame Cantabile), but they just messed up because they didn't understand the original and went for cute rather than sexy. Which, incidentally, is exactly what is likely to happen with the Nodame adaptation.

I reviewed it, picking it apart (I don't mention all problems, but some of the most glaring ones).

Hana Kimi Japan was my first drama too so I know how you feel. Truthfully I'm not sure I've ever watched a show that was as funny as HK but I've still been able to enjoy many others.

I would suggest Atashinchi no Danshi (similar in tone but not as broad as HK; it also has some of the same actors), Seigi no Mikata (much more grounded but still funny and silly at times; it has a lot of heart and is centered around a sibling relationship and not a romance) and Nihonjin no Shiranai (deals with people of other cultures more realistically than is the norm and is useful if you're interested in the Japanese language).

Happy Friday Beanut Gallery!

Not much to add to the conversation as I am behind on everything. I finally began Trot Lovers this week. Perhaps what I have to say has already been said in prior OTs (if so, sorry for the repetition) but it is so hard to get into the show. I keep comparing Ji Hyun-woo to how he played Kim Boong-do in QIHM and to a lesser extent Jung Eun-ji to Sung Shi-won. In AM1997. It’s so distracting. I’m not sure yet how much I like Jang Joon-hyun. I like the spunk of Choon-hee though although at the same time I am a little tired of the hardworking & plucky having to save the day due to the irresponsible debt ridden father. I see sparks of good acting from JHW but sometimes he’s a bit much.

ok, enough. On to dramas.
Roommates – I am really angry about the octopus. EVERY living creature feels pain, even plants. Octopussy are so smart. I know different cultural understandings and all, but you shouldn´t eat it, not if you have an endless variety of other foods available. If there is no crisis, why eat someone so smart and amazing.
You are all surrounded – somewhat repetative. Is there really only a limited variety of innocent things Go Ara and Seung Gi are allowed like hold hands, hug, put head on the lap? Man, those jealous fans.... it is getting repetative. I like the Madams´ son and I feel like he is a crying puppy drifting off to the ocean on a tiny piece of the wrecked ships´ plank. Someone save him from the sharks!
High School Savvy - ...... .................................... oh sorry, I was staring at Jin Woo. Ok. Ok. Collect yourself, foxy. You had thoughts.
Oh, yeah -
What´s this about brothers lately? We are getting a lot of brother stories. Triangle, Tae Il, Min Seok and his hyung, etc. Is that a new trend? And in general, what brings people close, what makes them friends or brothers? Working together? Missing something? Admiration? More than revenge plots or corporate schemes it now seems we are shifting towards simple human connections. That´s something I have thought about as well. How do we lose the masks and just accept each other, even if it didn´t seem possible in the beginning? How to overcome initial negativity and become a family? Like DaeguDaegu and Pan Seok becoming more and more alike and if I thought first PS is becoming a father figure, then now that we have an actualbio-dad, Pan Seok is more like a hyung.
Question: Who are your favorite real or „self-adopted” brothers from dramaland?

Haven't really got any favorites, though. But simple human connections are those stuffs that really breaks your heart (touching audiences), and since the easier to comprehend material may possibly be a good guarantee over higher audience base.

I did like the brothers from Gaksital. And for siblings, I prefer Sharks' Yi Soo and Yi Hyun siblings over the revenge plot.

Good MORNING My Wondrous Beans!

So much going on in KDrama these days!

High School King - I want to be worried about the 18 year old boy macking on the 28 year old woman, but I'm too busy swooning. And when I'm not, I'm ogling the Vampire.

Fated to Love You - The Jangs. They are jjangjjang couple, to borrow a phrase (and then mangle it) from You Are All Surrounded.

Speaking of - the upbeat theme music should be modified when we get the super melo shots of Seung Ki crying over all the dead people in his life.

Marriage Not Dating - I look forward to Friday night all week now.

Joseon Gunman - In my head I call it Ninja Cowboy. I love it.

Trot Lovers - if they kill off Heechulie I'm going to be upset.

WTF Doc - Let us not speak of our international shame again.

RoomMates - I vote in favor of Bommie staying.

Jang Bori - I think our brief sweet spot is over.

Fall in Love with Me - were it not for Aaron Yan, I'd have jumped ship a while ago. But have you SEEN that guy?

Other stuff I'm watching - decent things, don't have much to say.

Um, no. Trot Lovers is love. Love love love. Heechulie is in Grandpa Flower Investigators. What did I do there? Where did my brain go? It was a dark place.

I wasn't even sure anyone else was watching Grandpas. Woot! I let it linger a bit mid run but picked it back up. I was upset when Heechul cut his hair, skewed my drinking game of drink when he touches or flips his hair lol. Not happy abut the cloud of doom over Heechul either.

Marriage Not Dating - I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. At the very beginning I wasn't so sure I could relate to the lead girl. But I could totally relate when she had to be dragged to the club when all she wanted was to eat and drink some makgeolli. Thought the pool scene was a little over the top but it's a drama after all ^^

Roommates - I also vote in favorite of Bom staying but the knetz are ruthless, it'll be tough to say the least

<At the very beginning I wasn’t so sure I could relate to the lead girl

I think the problem was they made her so obsessive and criminally stalkerish that you'd look at her and think "Any sense person would avoid engaging with this person."

I'm still not quite convinced by her or the drama – I mean, I kind of like the chemistry between her and the male lead, but I really think they could have done her initial portrayal better (making her more relatable while still getting the point across).

I also feel the second female lead is pure cliché. Rich, beautiful, superior and perfect in every way. Such a insanely boring cookie-cutter character that I watched her and thought "let's just cut her out of the story and if anyone misses her they can just refer to a gazillion other K-dramas that have had exactly that kind of character".

Plus, I just didn't buy that no girl at the charity party was interested in the café owner (the ex). He was not ugly (however much they were trying to push that point) and he's obviously in the money, which those vain party girls would def. find irresistible.

I agree with you on a lot of these points. At first I though the lead girl might have been an early appearing relationship that the male leade ran away from to show his dislike of commitment. However i did think it made a nice recover later. And her heartbreak did feel real. OVer the top maybe, but real.

It's going to be a lot of cliches, but if it stays cute and funny at the same time (or does the cliches ala bride of the century) I'm not gonna complain. At lease not to much.

Required fields are marked *

Her heartbreak felt real and I liked that about the show (she was right to say "Face me when you break up with me, don't hide"), but I just think we could have gotten there without making the lead obsessive in such a problematic manner (a person like that has serious issues... which will not be resolved as easily as they will be in this drama).

I don't think rom-coms need the clichéd characters. You can have cute and funny without recycling to the extreme.

My tolerance level for these kind of things is a bit low I guess...

0

I agree. There was no need to make her that obsessive and stalkerish. And in any other situation as you say it would probably indicate something more going on.

To some level I think cliches will always be a part of any rom-com. But personally it depends how they are done. I can have very low tolerance with some ut accept other depending on execution. (Overly scheming scheemers that just makes things worse and then can't see that they are ruining things for themselves with their behaviour is the worst for me. Followed by the ex-love interest that turn down the hero, and then comes back and demands he loves them again being he used to).

0

Oh, the exes that return and think they have rights.... that's my biggest pet peeve in Asian dramas.

I cannot stand them.

Which is yet another reason why the second lead is already grating on me – she can't take 'no' for an answer and is trying to involve herself in the guy's life. I really hope he just keeps rejecting her (and that the heroine just ignores her because I can just see the second lead making up some lies to manipulate the heroine). I did think Ki Tae (was that his name?) could have just refused the auction, the rest of the episode made it pretty clear he's not a pushover.

0

I hope she gets ignored too. Or at least the female lead ees him putting her in her plce or something. Then again, probably not. It's a korean drama after all, misunderstandings will happen.

I agree about the auction. He could have refused it and simply left. It makes me think that maybe he wanted to prove something to the femle lead. Or maybe his friend, I'm not sure. But it did seem like he had a motive for not just flatly refusing, no matter how uncomfortable he felt doing it.

0

The auction made no sense, and the whole party made no sense.

He said they were going so that other people would see them together and could spread rumours that would reach his mom's ears... but then he spent the whole party with the ex-girlfriend and the lead was just eyeing the pretty waiter boy.

I watched ep 3 this morning, which gave me the impression that Ki Tae isn't quite over his ex. Can't say ep. 3 made any more sense to me – Ki Tae yelling at Jang-mi for drinking with his grandma and interfering with his life (dude, you asked her to be your fake girlfriend?! – plus, it's not like she could have know that granny wasn't supposed to drink?) and the ex mumbling about their pact to stay single forever (dream on – you break up, your ex can do whatever he wants, including move on from any ridiculous sort of pacts you once made). And Jang-mi being beginning stalking-mode for waiter-boy, being ignored by him and running to him the moment he calls her again (this girl needs to sort out a lot before she can be in a healthy relationship).

I don't think I'm going to last much longer for this drama, I don't find it funny, only clichéd. Only the bonding with granny was cute...

0

Are there any recaps for the Grandpa Investigation out there?! I stopped watching after three eps bc of time reasons but now you made me curious^^

Watching Fated to Love You.

Disappointed there were no rockets. More than just because the rockets scene is one of the funniest scenes ever. Because starting the relationship with incredible sex was part of what made the bond between this couple. It was great sex that ended up interfering with the real and long term committed relationship he had for 6 years with his girlfriend.

I have a hard time with the Ballet dancer. Intellectually, I know that they have very short careers. (I know a former NY ballet dancer). That like any athlete, she wanted to achieve her best and could not turn down the chance of a lifetime for her career. On the other hand, she left the man who was trying to propose, the man who has waited so long for her. Her man isn't her priority.

I can't help compare the two versions. The laugh of the man in the Korean version really rankles me. (Gun?) I cringe every time he laughs. It sounds so fake. I found charm with the lead in the Twainese version, and could therefore forgive him some bad behavior. I do not know if I will be as forgiving with this one. I also have a hard time with the hair. Why do I obsess over hair? A bad hairstyle can ruin and entire show for me., The Korean actor is handsome

Post-It girl is my favorite part of both versions. I really relate to her. I have been Post-it girl.

Fated to Love You is going to make my heart bleed all over again for Daniel. How could I not love Daniel more than the lead considering the actor is someone I adore? Oh, the pain I am in for. Why do I do this to myself? Perpetual second lead syndrome sufferer.

I feel the sudden urge to clarify that I do not mean that I was drugged and had s*x with a random person and got knocked up.

@Julia, I understand what you meant because I felt it, too! I literally cringed watching those first eps. I was exactly like that well into early adulthood. Poor girl. It is really hard when your natural personality is to be a people pleaser and help out others, but then it leads to being taken advantage of. And you know it, but you can't help it (or think you can't). I thought they depicted that part very well.

I'm the same. I am a bit of a pushover because I want to help people. And I'm bad at saying no, especially to people that ranks higher than me. It's nice to see that, at least so far, the main lead has been less pushy towards her and been wanting to build up her self confident more.

Hello Julia!

The Post-it girl for sure! Gets me every time! But you are right about the hair... bwahaha. I love Ethan Ruan's hair but probably because I kept seeing him as Ming Dao (who had such great chemistry with Joe Chen) But the Ethan character is a jerk, so yeah hahaha

I don't know if it was because of my Joe Chen-bias, or I was really young then and didn't know any better, but I really liked Fated To Love You (although can't say the same now having watched a lot of dramas from T/C, Japanese, and Korean)

But unlike you, I don't have any lingering attachments to the Dylan character probably because I didn't like the actor who got casted Hahaha I am so shallow. Doh for me, it was Joe Chen's acting that totally sold me, never mind the ridiculous portrayal of working "old maid" women who doesn't know how to speak her mind. Everytime she cries, my heart just cries a thousand times over. And I was already dreading Jang Nara's crying scenes, as she is as effective as Joe Chen T___T

I also miss the time when the T couple were on the boat with everyone assuming they were married. It was time for the 2 of them to be together and at least have a moment of thinking what would it be like if we were a couple. I think that was a crucial part of the path that the T couple took later in the show.

The motivation for the "hero" to make over post-it girl is more understandable if the "hero" has had great sex, played the part of a husband, saved the girl from humiliation at the hands of smuck boyfriend, felt the sting of humiliation himself from his girlfriend, and wants to sincerely help.

I guess at this point, I am still a big fan of the T version, although it dragged in the middle. I am hoping the K version captures my heart.

I'm having a hard time with FTLY also, but I'm not a fan of the original either. The crazy laugh guy personality vs the Mr. Sensitive is a bit wtf schizo. My biggest problem with the premise for the K version is that basically these two people were roofied. And whatever happened in the bed was also because they thought they were with their 'partners.' I do not find that scenario humorous or romantic.

I'm totally pro SeRa following her dream, not that she should have bolted like she did, but obviously she struggled with it, and she should pursue her dream, and her SO should support that. Women should not give up their dreams to follow a man. Frankly in todays worlds Gun could easily run his company remotely as needed. I respect SeRa's decision more than Mi Young marrying a stranger (that is in love with another woman) because she is pregnant and feels the pressure of cultural mores. Yes, MY struggled too, but ultimately she knew that this was not a great choice.

I kind of feel that post it girl past myself. That is something I worked on myself, learning to say no. I do it much more easily now.

I'm kind of on the fence on this drama. I like the supporting cast tremendously and the character of Mi Young is super sweet but I am struggling with the shotgun wedding premise with mature adults. I will be watching your comments to see your thoughts going forward.

Posted another with links but it appears it takes a long time to appear so:

Happy Friday everyone!

Has anyone seen the Taiwanese/Chinese drama Romance in the Rain? I had never seen a T/C drama before, but it was awesome and I ended up binge watching the entire thing on YouTube. It stars beautiful actresses Zhao Wei and Ruby Lin in a story set in 1930s Shanghai. In spite of the title, romance isn't really the main theme of the show. It's also about family, friendship, and young people finding themselves, becoming stronger people, learning how to forgive, etc. It was refreshing that the character development mainly occurred with the female characters, and I also enjoyed the intelligent and realistic dialogue. It does drag somewhat in the middle, but overall I recommend it!

Halu! Happy weekend guys!

Still watching Dal Ja's spring and almost afraid for it to end. Im gonna miss the characters, they are all so awesome!

Catching up on Fated to Love You Dang! I must say that Jang Nara is as impressive as always! The Taiwan counterpart of her character was played by Joe Chen (who is herself one amazing actress) and I'm really really happy to see Jang Nara rocking the character I love (although everyone seems to be hating the character of the original version hoho)

I am way behind High School King of Savvy and Joseon Gunman boo me! because I have a lot of writing to catch up on and my publisher's about to kill me anytime -.-' What can I do? I am much productive watching dramas so kill me huhu

To Chandler: I already have my promise copy of Evasive Inquiry Agency hooray! Will start watching it hopefully by the end of next week.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the summer season ....... or winter, if you happen to be in a country where it's winter right now.

Random observation after watching all these kdramas ....... South Korea seems to have the most awesome sneakers (aka: tennis shoes, trainers)! .......

For a while now, I've noticed the men have these sneakers which look fantastic. So do the women. ...... The colors are oh so cool and just right, none of those awful fluorescent shades. ....... The sneakers don't look flimsy nor do they appear to be overly constructed as to appear heavy on the foot, if that makes any sense. ...... Most of all, they look comfortable.

At this point, if I found myself traveling in South Korea, I'd be visiting the beautiful sites, eating delicious food and buying an extra large suitcase to bring back all my newly purchased sneakers!

Watched this week:

Dr. Stranger - I'm down to only watching the first 15 minutes or so of the episodes. ...... It's unfortunate what this drama turned into.

You're All Surrounded - A little beyond the half-way point and still really liking it ...... more so than I thought I would! ....... Little, unexpected things here and there which are pleasant surprises.

A New Leaf - Also good and liking it also. Things are actually believable. ........ Both main ahjusshis are in fine form here!

Trot Lovers - Just started this one. Good to see Ji Hyun-woo back in dramaland again. Jung Eun-ji just lights up a room with her splendid smile! ...... Geun-woo! I'm laughing just thinking about him!

Joseon Gunman - I checked out about 15 minutes of each of the first 2 episodes. ....... It's certainly looked good and I liked what I saw.

Warrior Baek Dong-soo - Finally finished this! ...... The ending, oh my goodness!....... I logically understand it, from Cho-rip's point of view. I do. ........ That understanding, though, doesn't make the end result any less sad. ....... Nevertheless, this was oh so good.

Hercule Poirot Mystery: Death on the Orient Express - I've seen a bunch of the Poirot mysteries over the years, but I somehow missed this one! ........ It was great just like all the previous ones. David Suchet who plays Poirot, I swear, he was made for that character.

Ok, that's it for now. Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

I do recall keeping an eye on the primer minister's press secretary/spin doctor guy ...... his name escapes me right now, but I remember watching him and initally thinking, "Geez, he gets the job done but he's such a jerk, he must be accumulating enemies left and right!" ....... then I tuned in one day and happened to watch the episode which had flashbacks of him as a child ..... Wow. Everything fell into place and the character made sense.

And you're right about the font size! ..... Bigger please!!

@ korfan & John

I agree with the both of you about David Suchet as Hercule Poirot and Leo McKern as Rumpole of the Bailey totally owning these roles.

Another vote here for David Suchet. I remember one year when I was in junior high reading all the works of Agatha Christie, a new one every week. Poirot was my favorite character, and I swear the image I conjured up of him in my brain as a twelve year old EXACTLY matches David Suchet in the role. I literally gasped when I saw him the role the first time because it was so uncanny. Can't wait to see the last few "Poirot" movies they shot this year, although I will be sorry to see him end the role!

Suchet is such a great actor in general. I saw him in "The Bank Job," where he played an evil gangster, and he was so convincing that it was a full six months before I could see him in anything else because he was so scary there.

Aww, I hadn't heard about him ending the role. It'll be sad, but I suppose it had to happen one day.

"The Bank Job" sounds intense! I'm totally trying to picture Suchet playing a baddie gangster! What a change of pace from the Belgian detective!

How are you? This week has been a little cooler here thank god. I had my first proper night of sleep the other day though it made me feel so sluggish at work.

Poirot, hm I've seen a couple of them but I mostly watched the miss Marpel shows. Always liked them better.

Doing ok, thanks! ....... Glad to hear it's cooler there because it's starting to get hotter here. ....... *sigh* ..... But it's the summer season, so what are you going to do, right?

I've also watched a couple of the Miss Marple shows! The shows aren't bad at all. ....... It's quite amusing to see the townspeople go about their daily lives while this big crime/mystery is swirling around them ........ in the meantime, there's Miss Marple is drinking her tea, being so unassuming and non-threatening all while keeping an eye on every detail!

oooh yesss another sneaker fan! Great sneakers aren't hard to get at all btw, I got an amazing pair of blue suede Nike Blazers in Tokyo last month and wore them to traipse ALL OVER the city - they're a classic style and looked really cool. Luckily the brands with good-looking shoes are things easily available in the US - the most popular shoes I saw in Japan were brightly coloured New Balance sneakers, they're all the rage in Harajuku.

I'm a huge fan of Murder on the Orient Express, the book is one of my favourite mysteries of all time. It's funny how the old Poirot movies contain some 60s style icons - Jane Birkin played a maid in one of them.

Yes, totally a sneaker fan! They have to be comfy though ....... and none of those garish, loud colors! Heh.

I don't know what drama it was, or maybe it wasn't even a drama but another show ..... anyway, I saw someone wearing the coolest New Balance sneakers in the most awesome, muted gray. ...... Gray! I know!

All I know is, they looked fantastic and I want a pair. ...... Of course that brand is sold here, but I've never, ever seen that style in that gray color. I've only seen their gray (another shade) running sneakers with magenta-colored or flourescent green soles with all the air pockets or cutouts on the sole. Ewww!

The Squicky Factor

Hi beanies! I wrote a small version of this on the HSK post on Tuesday and I was thinking maybe more people could give a new insight on my question on the OT.

Main question: Do you think the High School King OTP is squicky? Yes, no, why? If you watched them, did you feel the same about Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, Big, I Hear Your Voice and Secret Love Affair?

It's odd, like I said on my first post there, I can't find the squickyness in HSK at all. I never get people calling 18, 19 years old guys kids. They might be kids, but then again, they might not be. In my country we usually go to College at 17, I remember freshman year very well, those guys were all mostly kids. Min-seok seems way more mature then they were so what's the difference if he's still in high school? If the place doesn't matter, I remember the same guys were very different a year later, so 18 is not necessarily a kid at all. I'm only curious about how you guys see it, not how the law of each country would judge it. The law doesn't mean anything for me here.

I guess what I'm saying is if Min-seok is a mature guy and she is immature, where's the squickyness? She reacts so childishly often, I have a hard time imagining her a woman instead of a girl.

It's the exact same scenario as FBRS and Big for me. People kept saying those guys were kids left and right and I was totally confused. :) I did understand people having the squicks in IHYV though, not because I shared them, I loved the OTP, but they were in different places in life on the story, and mostly the leading lady for me was much more a woman than the girls in FBRS and Big, who were just, well, girls.

The only drama that did make me feel squicky was SLA, that I didn't get at all. The guy was a kid and acted like one. I gave up at ep 8 because of that but that was completely different from these other shows.

Is there some other factor that makes those guys kids and those girls fully grown women that I'm not getting it???:)

I'm not watching High School King (going to wait until it's done and then marathon it), but I don't find the age difference squicky. I'm not sure what the age of consent is in South Korea, so I'm basing this on the context where I'm from, where both people would be consenting adults.

Both people being legal, the thing that tends to make me uncomfortable about large age differences isn't the numbers themselves, but power dynamics. Like where the younger person behaves like, or is treated like, a child in relation to the older person, or where the younger person plays the naive role and the older person as worldly and experienced, where one is clearly emotionally immature compared to the other, or where the older person is a position of authority over the younger, things like that. I'm not expressing this well, but I hope my meaning comes across.

From what I've read in the recaps of High School King, the lead couple seem balanced, despite the age difference, so I don't find it squicky.

I'm thinking of some dramas I've watched recently with age differences. I found the relationship in The Prime Minister and I kind of squicky, but I was fine with the one in King of Dramas. The one in Secret Love Affair didn't squick me out, but it was obvious that it was problematic and that was part and parcel of the story. I was okay with Witch's Romance too, but did find myself thinking that the relationship probably wouldn't last. Honestly, I think the one that squicked me the most was I Hear Your Voice; I liked the show, but that pairing made me uncomfortable.

Because of Reasons, I liked very much what you said about the power play involved sometimes in the age gap relationships. I didn't write about it in my post because it was long enough :) but it's probably the whole reason for me feeling squicky or not about any of these OTPs.

I think the consent age in Korea is 19, here it's 18, but then again that can't really determine if someone is an adult, at least not in real life, so it's just something that needs to exist for protecting children, for society to function properly.

I didn't find PMI squicky only too unbelievable and forced, anyway, I still have to finish watching the last eps. I felt the same about WR.

Lixie - 19 in Korea = 18 in Western age, Koreans count age differently from us. You're counted as 1 year old at birth, basically.

The way I see it, the romance in HSK doesn't look weird, because SIG-the actor is much older and doesn't really feel like a highschooler. He sure does well the part of being in a place he doesn't belong to, but he's not highschool-y to me.

As for the other dramas - I didn't believe in the romance in FBRS. Chisoo was a stupid brat and nothing more. Having been a young teacher myself I know what difference there is between hs kids and a grown up person. Sure, I had students who were mature and one could have very sensible conversations with them, but still, they were on a different stage of life. Almost a different world. The older part sees the difference clearly and because it's something new, it leaves a strong impression.
And besides, I was totally for Lazy Panda Pillar. A no-brianer for me ;P

I dropped IHYV quickly and didn't get to the point where the relationship was shown in a convincing way. So I can't judge that one.

As for SLA, the age difference was the biggest, but the relationship between the people involved was also the most understood to me. They were both independent people who were fascinated by each other and found something they wanted to keep no matter what. In real life I would probably find it gross (like I felt about my cousin dating a woman 17 years older than himself), but the drama made me accept and tollerate it.

Koptyko, funny you talked about SIG being older, I remember watching the last ep and thinking how young he looked and great for the part. Besides if you don't forget he is older you're not really sold on the OTP.:)

I liked Cha Chi Soo, he was a mean brat sometimes but the girl was so silly too, I felt they could be a good couple. I wished FBRS had been much less cartoonish and more realistic and complex.

It's not like I care a lot about HSK. I go for the funny, the romance could be never mentioned and I wouldn't miss it.

My beef with Cha Chisoo was that he needed to be made human before he could be a part of any relationship. It never happened in the drama, so I didn't like the idea of him being with Eun Bi.

You make a good point about why some noona romances work better than other. Some like in Ramen shop the heroine was more immature than most 18,19 years olds and he wasnt a good fit for an older woman in late 20s.

Min Suk is not a brat and the actor makes him look childish in workplace and i can buy he is a high schooler just like his friends whose actors are real HS age but most important the reason the romance works for me Min Suk is too mature, leader among his peers and too young for his workplace.

He looked believable as friend to an older woman and later he looked like a man chasing a woman close to his age, maturity.

0

I would miss the romance but I forgot to say I could be very happy if it went crazy and the true OTP was with Jin Woo, he would just have to grow up a lot ehhehe. What can I say? I am a sucker for traumatized characters, I'd like if he could stay a little mean but still a decent person and change his priorities.

0

In my country also we go to college at 17 and legal age is 18 so I don't find it weird in dramas and believe me I'm 18 and I know that the guys around me are not kids I mean some could be immature but most are mature people just craving a little experience in life I guess, The only difference between us and 28 year old people is that they have some more experience in life and we are a lot carefree, in that sense maybe we are kids.. But i don't find being romantically involved with older people squicky in dramas or real life

“Is there some other factor that makes those guys kids and those girls fully grown women that I’m not getting it???”

To me, there’s no other factor. I think that most older people tend to see people younger than them as kids, even when those “younger people” act matured or are even more matured than they are. It’s mostly all about the age. For instance, my brother is dating a lady 7years older than him, when my family found out, they nearly lost it, wanting to know what a 31year old lady is doing with a 24year old kid, and my brother has got to be the most matured, rational, if not most sane person in my family(except when he’s sick), but that was all forgotten while they were debating the age difference issue. Just because she’s older, it suddenly made him a kid.

In HSKOS, I don’t find the relationship squicky. The dude is 18, he can be a bit childish sometimes and has some growing up to do, but he is a matured guy and the way he handled Soo-young’s rejection was confirmation enough for me. I do wish though that the age difference had been lessened. I think part of the squicky factor, has to do with the fact that he is still in high school, maybe if he was a drop-out and working in the same company in the lowest rung and whatnot, people wouldn’t find it so squicky, Lol I don’t know *shrugs*

Mystique, that made me laugh because I have a similar story. I have a friend who's in her thirties and whenever she goes on a date with a twenty something she calls them babies. I always laugh and wonder at the craziness.

I totally agree, the fact that he is in High School is the big taboo here. I think we've seen the same leading guys do childish things like in Secret Garden or many others and nobody would call them kids. Min-Seok is impulsive never really childish for me, at least so far, no idea how he will handle the romance. The only really childish thing he has done for me is not dealing with the younger sister crush appropriately but then again, we've all seen countless leading men do exactly the same thing.

Lixie - can't speak for all of the above dramas since I don't like all of them, but in Biscuit Teacher Star Candy, I had no squick factor for two reasons:

1) Gong Yoo was a year older than Gong Hyo-jin, who played his teacher. And he totally looked it.

2) She doesn't reciprocate at first while he's underage, and even has a relationship with another man (also the reason why the IHYV couple have me no squicks - Soo-ha's love was strictly one-sided when he was still a high schooler, Hye-sung doesn't fall for him until he's a year out of school and no longer a teenager)

pogo I had forgoten that one! I still have to finish Biscuit! Funny I never did even if has 2 of my favorite actors, love them both. The romance itself didn't squick me but I was only halfway, it reminded me a LOT of IHYV, maybe that's why I didn't finish, at the time it was like a watered down version of IHYV so I dropped even if it was sweet.
But I don't think it's fair to not feel the squicks :) just because we KNOW the actor is older, I have to buy the story as a whole if I'm remembered by the actor real life it means the story doesn't work. So I did believe GY was really 18 or 19, don't remember and still felt no squick because he was old enough to have a crush and act on it and there was no power play involved, but I still have to finish, I bet there is time skip somewhere to deal with it nicely, I hate those cop outs. :) I really hope HSK doesn't go that road.

Required fields are marked *

no, cause they were dramas.

High School King - not that much squicky as I think reciprocating Min Seok is rushed by Soo Young. feels a bit out of the blue. not convincing. Plus I really want to see Jin Woo complete turnaround and madly in love. if possible.

but I believe in Min Seoks feelings and also conflict and even his friends pointed out it is crazy and he says he cant help it.

hmm I remember when one of my best friends was love sick when we were 18 and she came to me to pour heart, and was wailing and crying at my house and cried all over my blankets and pillows and I was just damn puzzled. you know, 18 year olds can SOOO be like that be it boy or girl. but i never knew how to help those poor things even when I was same age

in I hear your voice no one could doubt that those two are like the Earth and Moon for each other. the concern they showed, their worlds were buildt around each other so how can that be squicky?

FBRS - it is not like an 18 year old grows up to be that much different from himself. but in the course of the dramaChi Soo shed off that immaturity that kept him back from understanding others and his own feelings. and wasnt his father still as immature by the end? Chi Soo grew up truly. spiritually. if you are going to complain about grown up vs baby then why not mention High Kick ?

Secret Love Affair: professional actors doing their job so well you cant possibly get a squicky. butat times she seemed so uncaring I was seriously doubting.... her expressions could be even cruel.

Witchs romance - who wouldnt want a Dong Ha? if someone is so kind, one can only hope life doesnt turn them bitter and mean like most and cynical and hard. which is impossible with Dong Ha. But it was as much friends as love that made him a whole person. having fantastic friends or parents can help even if you have no direction in life. so maybe borrowed maturity and friends´wisdom worked for the both of them?

redfox yes, it was a bit rushed, on the other hand, she has been impulsive several times so it's in character for her.:) I felt the OK signs were soooo adorable.

SLA - fantastic acting indeed, I stuck until ep 8 just for that, but I felt she was too manipulative of him which made it even more squicky for me. :)

WR- Can I raise a hand? Me! I don't want a Dong-Ha, he was so goody, I like me some meanness so I know at least the guy is not a saint and will never be shocked to find out I'm not either. :)

What gets me is that she doesn't know that he's a high schooler. She's already been betrayed by the other guy; I just know it'll crush her to find out she's fallen for someone who's not even out of high school yet...she'll think, "Of course no real guy would fall for me." If the girl knows what she's getting into and chooses it, that's a different situation.

No squick. I had no problem with any of the dramas you listed. FBRS-Cha Chi Soo was very much a player. IHYV-Suha was an old soul. I dropped SLA because it made me sleepy so no comment there. I do think that HSK is a very different animal than the other dramas. MS is not mature, he is very much a teenager. Not sure Dorkanoona is going to liking the teen thing one bit.

Happy Friday, fellow dramabean-ers!

Recent adventures in K-drama land:
*I watched "Secret Love Affair," despite my inherent distaste for the topic, since it was so highly touted by many here. Having finished it, I'm not sure if I'm glad I watched it or not. It was definitely a well-made drama, with technical excellent and terrific acting. However, it created such a bleak portrayal of humanity that it leaves one with a very cold feeling.

*I went old-school and saw 'I Need Romance 2012.'" It was the first of the "I Need Romances" I'd seen, and I really liked it! A cute romantic comedy with very likeable characters. I had some deja-vu flashbacks to my Sex and the City watching days, when I absolutely hated Carrie and Big together, but overall a very nice watch.

*I'm currently watching "Fated to Love You." I want to add one of the new dramas to balance out the rom-com. Debating "Josean Gunman" - thoughts? Other recommendations?

Secret Love Affair - Most people probably think about and focus on the affair between Oh Hye-Won and Lee Sun-Jae. But for me - it's the music, artistic look/feel, and styling of the drama that is most memorable for me.

I Need Romance Series - Highly recommend I Need Romance 3 with Kim So-Yeon and Sung Joon. I'll never look at sweet potatoes or giraffes the same way again. Also, it has nice french music interlaced throughout.

Joseon Gunman - It's Lee Jun-Ki. Plus, don't miss out on seeing him rock Hanboks, suits, spectacles, and bandit/vigilante attire. Knock on wood, so far he has a pretty good track record when it comes to picking projects that end up having something extra special in the mix.

Other recommendations:
High School King of Savvy - Just for the performances by and acting of Seo In-Guk and Lee Soo-Hyuk. As many have mentioned, you forget these two men are acting and just see their characters. It's awesome to tuning in each week to watch them as actors embody and convey the nuances of and emotional depth to their characters.

You are surrounded - salted liquorice
Doctor Stranger - After Eight (to me, cause I personally consider that chocolate the king of yucky)
High School Savvy - hot caramel
Trot Lovers - praliné with hard salty caramel pieces inside
Joseon gunman - jawbreaker

I love this kid in High School King. I was truly worried about the noona romance bc he is STILL a high school student and "Husband" Lee to Jung Soo Young's little sister but after watching episodes 7 & 8, all that vanished.

This kid is perfectly awesome, I must say. I truly love how he goes from childish HSer to "man" in a few episodes. I know he understands the implications of declaring his love to the point where he becomes physically ill, but dude is still going for what he wants.

I'm also not going to overlook that delicious shower scene with Lee So Hyuk. Holy Abs Batman!!!!! Dude, no need to close the robe. I did feel a pinch of sadness for him, but that all vanished when he became douche#1 to Jung Soo-Young. You can tell he feels remorse but he has no way of stopping the train wreck that he is creating.

The drama is such a fun watch. So many well-crafted side characters.

1. Bad Family. NSM and KMM. As good as the first time. We havr the DVDs but wr still find it easier to watch online

2. My Girl. Setting the stage for Hotel King? We have the offical box set but we find online easier.

3. Goong. One of YEH's first roles outside the kpop babyvox scene. Really surprising how good she was so early.

Its New To Me:

1. Joseon Gunman. LjK haa grown into his own...

3. FTLYIB. It got serious real quick. Loving it.

4. Witch's Romance. Mixed feelings. It is kind of a hot mess. Lost in the middle somewhere.

5. Hotel King. Yes it is scary long but i am hoping against hope that LDH does a dangun song redux for LDW before the end. Just startes.

Hello everyone! ^^ Happy Friday to you all.

Picked up the drama The Chaser recently. I'm really not connecting with it emotionally. There are some scenes that got to me, but overall, this drama isn't thrilling me. I'm gonna finish it though.

Other dramas I'm watching:

Joseon Gunman - It just gets better and better. I'm always pining for the next episodes! You get to see Lee Jun Ki be so badass in a hanbok, black suit, and mysterious gunman outfit. 8D

You're All Surrounded - The show got more exciting this week, but I'm still in it more for the characters than the actual plot. I adore how caring and thoughtful Soo Sun is to Dae Gu. They're cute together. I really wanted to see some kissing in EP 18, looked like a good time for it. Not sure when else are we gonna get some passionate kissing with only 2 episodes left. xP

I'm thinking about starting Fated to Love You. I briefly skimmed the intro of the FTLY recaps and it looked like the show was good.

I saw a good morning and I was like ummmmm?? But then different longitude keke^^

From my side its good evening. Semester break going on getting absolutely bored. At my parents place with limited internet access so can't even watch much things. Whatever I caught I'll comment on it

Marriage Not Dating: I had high expectations of you, Thanks for being good. After I saw Anticipate love by the same writer I was exited about this one. Even the guy lead name is same Ki Tae. eeee.. Please continue being awesome because 2014 has been a rom com dry year.

Joseon Gunman: Caught the first episode, downloaded upto ep 4 but didn't feel like watching it. Wasn't riveted by it or anything. Read the recaps here though and have to say I don't like two things with the story,

one its villian, since its from princess man people I expected a villian as villianious as su yang, but this choi does nothing for me I don't quake in my boots for the hero when he is around. And those boring oldies who just sit and talk. ugh, its like I don't even need a gun to kill you guys, i'll probably just trip you and you'll be finished.

second, its the main problem for me I don't see the romance, the chemistry, I just don't see it. To me these two don't look good together. I know the girl from bad family, even though I loved that drama the romance left a lot to be desired, as for Jun ki i love him but with him also, I've seen him in my girl which was a wasted character, then I saw two weeks and even though loved it to pieces i never gave a damn about the man pairing, even in their past scenes. So I have no idea if they are actually any good in romances..

Will continue for the fight scenes though...

YAAS: seriously?? Really mate you are going to do this to me. Seung gi is my first kdrama crush all thanks to 1n2d and king2hearts later gf is gumiho too. But last years gu family book left me in tears it was sooo bad, I even watched it when my high school finals were going on. This year I expected it to be good again I watched it during my college exams even though its not as bad as gu but its still not good. I was contemplating dropping it but nothing of the new crop interests me. Please don't disappoint me any further..

As for the most hot topic on DB now NODAME: I'll read the recap if someone picks it up I'm not going to experiment on my own. I love the jdorama, which is a rare happenstance for me cuz I don't like jdoramas but strangely it stuck a chord with me. LOve NODAMe LOve Chiaki, loved everything about it just that i did think while watching that if it were a korean drAma it would have been a little heavy on the romance dept. it would have been better. BUT seriously why did have such ominous thoughts? IT turned into horrendous reality. I do wish that it doesn't turn up as bad as i'm foreseeing, but if they really go with Yoona I have no expectations from then on.

Now the old dramas I've been watching

Now the old dramas I've been watching

City Hall: heard many good things about it, but have to say extremely slow start. But kim Sun Ah is such a hoot.

Last Scandal of my life: Amazing. Just completed it. Loved it. But it saddens me that the lead actress died and the name of the drama kind of bums me because it was her last project.

City Hunter: I started watching this drama back in 2012 still stuck somewhere around ep13. And I have the drama not that I'm watching online. Promised myself I'll finish it before new term starts.

Pride: the jdorama to rule all. keke^^ Yes I feel its the best jdorama I've seen thus far.

Tatta Hitotsu something something: A little childish but good until now. watching the 4th epi,

Give City Hall a shot, it gets better quickly after an uneven start of about 3-4 eps.

Last Scandal was certainly a sad watch if you watched it after CJS's passing. It makes me so angry that people having nothing better to do than to make up things about other people in the public eye. RIP Choi ssi.

I also encourage you to stick with City Hall. I watched it this year, and it became one of my favorite K dramas. It just takes a while to get into gear. Once it does, it's fantastic. The leads are, I think, my favorite K drama couple. They're both adults, and "real" people. They both have good and bad points, and they grow into better people through their relationship. Loved it.

We've had some soaking thunderstorms the past few days.

Lots of tomatoes and cucumbers. Had cucumber soup the other day. Yay for homegrown food.

I'm liking the newer crop of shows after some recent disappointments.

Marriage, Not Dating, HSK, FTLY & Trot Lovers

Behind on JG and Roommate.

Surprised that DramaFever has All About My Siblings (Wakamono Tachi ). What a cast.

Another J Drama that I liked was a short 5 episode The Long Goodbye.

If film noir is to your liking you won't be disappointed.

Hi Beanies, Happy OT!!

I really really hate summertime, because that’s when my allergies start acting up. Have to start dealing with itchy/red eyes and blocked/runny nose. Winter please come fast, I miss you. :'(

Currently watching :

Trot Lovers : Oh Byul, you little matchmaker. And for the love of all things holy! can they please do something about Choon-hee and Joon-hyun’s make-up

Fated to love you : Still loving this. I totally adore the grandmother. Please Lee Gun, don’t go down the jerk road.

High school king of savvy : As much I love this show, there is one thing that didn't quite resonate with me in the last episode, when she suddenly realizes that she likes him too, it just didn't do it for me.

Marriage, not dating : The first 2 episodes were sub-par. The female lead annoyed me so much in the first episode, so much so, that I wished I could wring her neck, I got so frustrated, I kept yelling CAN’T YOU TAKE A FREAKING HINT??. When she drunkenly went to confront him, I was like “alright, give him a piece of your mind and walk out of there” but no, it was the opposite. 2nd episode was better but just dragged on. Still willing to give this a chance, hopefully it gets better.

Joseon Gunman : Seriously Soo-in?? this is the same dude you was tryna help leave Joseon, he gets shot in front of you, you assumed he was dead(naturally), he comes back assuming another identity, and you confront him in public about being Yoon-Kang?? Really?? Sweetie, I know you must have been shocked, and desperately wish for him to be your dead first love (which of course he is) but, please use your head. Aren’t you supposed to be smart??
Now that that’s out of the way, OH LORDY! Yoon-kang in his gunman attire just has me drooling, he’s freaking HOT!!

YAAS: Lol after watching the last episode, I just wanted to cry. I never really liked Chief Kang, but my heart broke for her, when she was trying to explain herself and for Dae-gu to believe her. Whenever Director Shin or whatever his name is comes on, I try to look everywhere else but his face, his eyes make mine water.
And oh! Assemblyman Yoo, you can go ahead and have yourself a heart-attack, you’d be doing yourself and everyone else a favour, me included. The way he acts just makes me wonder if he feels a heart attack coming on, what with his facial expressions. *rme*
On a side note: y’all keep slapping hard surfaces, don’t y’alls palms hurt?

Doctor Stranger : ……………………………………………………………………………….. NO WORDS NEEDED!

Finished watching That winter, the wind blows : I didn’t get the ending of the drama at allllllllll.

Just picked up Warrior Baek dong-soo : Just in episode 3, but liked the first two episodes very much.

Have a nice weekend everyone!!

Lucky you, you got the whole drama (winter) just didn't get the ending? I didn't get that drama at all, it just felt creepy to me. As for the ending I think the girl got her eyesight back to some extent that's why the weird cinematography, and she came to that cafe everyday but didn't recognize the guy because he never talked to her and she didn't know his face, but then he suddenly talks to her and she recognizes him. They forget suddenly how creepy they were the whole drama and presumably live happily ever after. THE END....

I just finished watching Warrior Baek Dong-soo yesterday. ....... It was so good!

I started watching around episode 13 or so, it just happened that way, and continued from there. One day I'll go back and watch eps 1-12.

I hope you continue to enjoy it.

Regarding That Winter, to this day I'm still wondering about Secretary Wang. ...... What was that about? Right?

I hope so too, thank you.

As for Secretary Wang, i still can't figure her out. I still wonder if she truly cared for the blind girl (finished drama, i forgot her name). And i still don't understand the reason as to why she let the girl go blind. In fact, she is one character i never understood.

On paper also her reasons were weird. The blind girl(forgot her name as well) has to be dependent on wang so that she won't leave her, that's why. Such misguided love and reason, if I take moral from her story Maybe I should just cut my boyfriends legs??

I find that when I live in the tropics I don't get my allergies (am very ready for hay fever season to be over, so I feel you!)

Marriage Not Dating: browsing the OT, most people seem to be loving it, but I had serious issues with the portrayal of the female lead (If I ran into someone like her, I'd 100% avoid her from then on because she was obsessive in a mentally ill and criminal manner. Not okay.). Plus, the second female lead was so cliché she nearly put me to sleep. Nor was I convinced by what they when they were trying to sell off the ex-boyfriend as "unattractive" (in looks and appeal otherwise) to the vain ladies at the charity party. He might not be everyone's type, but he was perfectly fine looking and also HE'S GOT MONEY so no way that these people would find him unattractive.

Joseon Gunman: haven't watched this week's episodes yet but these comments from everyone about Soo-in make me worry since I was already feeling cautious about her anyhow. I mean, her reaction sounds very typical for k-dramas, but it's NOT the reaction of a smart character (one at an equal level with LJK's character) that I was hoping for in this drama. Looks like we are heading in the direction of a superbly written hero and an underdeveloped love interest who will be used a narrative tool rather than be a character of her own worth. Hmmmm.

I have pretty much given up on Joseon Gunman - never been a fan of historical dramas anyway, but finding this one more annoying than most. Mainly because of the lead actress (or at least her character) - she sometimes seems to act like some dumb k-pop aegyo girl who just happened to be dressed up in traditional clothes.

Required fields are marked *

"a superbly written hero and an underdeveloped love interest who will be used a narrative tool rather than be a character of her own worth" - you sum it up real well. I don't want a Soo-In whose entire life revolves around nothing else but Yoon-Kang.

Required fields are marked *

I haven't watched this week's episodes, but if Soo-in is back to behaving the way she did in episodes 1-3....it's going to be a real test to endure this for Lee Jun-ki's sake.

And I do not buy that sheltered but curious Joseon agasshis sound like aerated tweens at a One Direction concert, no matter what Soo-in/Nam Sang-mi fans claim. The Princess' Man did a great job of showing a heroine who was naive but modern-minded and curious but still a woman of her time. Joseon Gunman....not so sure.

Required fields are marked *

LOL - "aerated tweens" describes it perfectly. And that is exactly the impression I get of Soo-In. I originally dropped JG after ep2, was persuaded to try again, and have since given up again. Dumb girls as a plot device I can live with - but dumb girls that are supposed to be smarter than the average bear, not so much. (Noting that bears in Korea are considered pretty stupid).

Nine had a superbly written hero and somewhat underwritten love interest, but the romance wasn't as central to the story there and at least the female character wasn't used blatantly as a narrative tool... and she had her strengths. And she didn't feel like a completely typical K-drama heroine, which is always helpful.

Here, well, we are still only at the beginning, but there are some warning signs. Soo-in seems to be falling into a certain pattern of love interest female heroines, which I find disappointing because I really don't think she needs to be. She can be spirited, but she doesn't need to be aegyo. She may have been sheltered and innocent, but she doesn't need to be dumb – not when she's supposed to be "enlightened" and "a scholar".

It's not that difficult to give her substance, but I worry the writers will take the easy way because LJK's character is the star here and people make excuses for weakly written female heroines more easily.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

yeah, why is there this prejudice against actually competent heroines? I can accept naive but intelligent....but in this case the drama is doing a major Tell, Not Show by informing us Soo-in is intelligent and then having her act like she isn't.

And it's not like sageuks have to have weakly written female heroines. The female leads of Lee Jun-ki and the PD's last sageuks (i.e. Arang and The Princess' Man) were not weak or stupid at all. Hell, look at Hye-won here. Why can't the smart, cold, competent girl have a shot at being the main lead, when played by a convincing actress? You know she and Yoon-kang would be a force to reckon with if they teamed up, despite the your-daddy-killed-mine angle.

I still really love this drama, but the writing of the heroine really sticks in my craw. Unlike what people seem to think, it's not an attack on Nam Sang-mi, I'm just tired of the aegyo act, it doesn't suit her at all.

0

I would put it down to lazy writing... the writers know they can get away with an underdeveloped heroine, as long as LJK's character is superbly done (which he will be) because probably the majority of people are watching for him and the revenge plot.

Teaming him up with someone like Hye-won... I guess that would be too radical for K-dramas?

Marriage not dating : After i was done posting,i scrolled up to read other posts, and i read how much they liked the drama, i just said to myself "i must be the only one who doesn't really like this". As for the female lead, i totally am with you, if i met someone like her, i would ABSOLUTELY avoid her..

"Looks like we are heading in the direction of a superbly written hero and an underdeveloped love interest who will be used a narrative tool rather than be a character of her own worth."

I couldn't agree more!!.

You know, in High School King, I actually loved that Soo-Young developed feelings for Min-Seok in the last episode because it actually felt grounded in real emotion for me. She became aware of how precious their relationship really is and even though it might seem fast, the pacing actually felt more realistic to me because for once a lead was actually able to "think" through her feelings and accept the fact that the person that's pursuing them is actually quite a catch, instead of needing countless moments of "awareness" before she accepted that she had feelings for them. Sometimes all it takes is someone showing interest in you for you to realize that you two actually make quite a lovely couple, and the fact that Soo-Young was able to do that with Min-Seok and take a chance on him was kind of awesome. I agree in a certain way that I wasn't expecting episode 8 to take us, well, where it took us, but I was even more surprised that, by the end, I was 100% behind the romance beginning to unfold right then and there.

It's really good, a typical coming of age societal clash/controversial issues set in the mid 1960s that was really well done. Of all the themes, I think the daughter/father relationship development between Baby and Dr. Houseman was really cool. A great chick flick on those nights that call for one. If you ever watch it (and I hope you give it a chance) let me know if/how you liked it).

I've realised that I can only properly follow two currently airing dramas at a time, otherwise I fall short on sleep trying to keep up.

These days I'm watching Joseon Gunman, which so far is pretty much what I expected it to be; I'm satisfied with that.

I tried Trot Lovers, but gave up on it after the 4th episode.

Last weekend I watched the first 2 episodes of Marriage, Not Dating, just because it was on the Viki front page. I wasn't expecting much of it, based on the character descriptions and synopsis, but I fell in love with it right away. I desperately hope that it stays as good as it has been so far; if it keeps things up, it could enter my personal kdrama romcom Hall of Fame alongside My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Coffee Prince and Queen In Hyun's Man. Really looking forward to a new episode tonight!

Happy Friday, everyone!

Still haven't watched this week's or last week's episodes of Joseon Gunman, but hoping to remedy that very soon. In the meantime I'm also watching...

God's Quiz: since I only discovered this show last fall, this is my first time watching it live (also my first time watching a drama with only one episode a week). Still, loving it.

Return of Iljimae: getting strong Princess Bride vibes from this show, which is always a good thing. And I agree with those who said the narrator is hilarious--I find myself missing her when she doesn't say anything for a while.

Running Man: surprisingly, I think my favorite pairing this episode was Ji Hyo / Suk Jin. I just loved how they got right into character from the beginning. Ji Sung and Kwang Soo did a great job of diverting everyone's suspicions to accomplish the mission (especially Ji Sung).

Also (finally!) watched the movie A Werewolf Boy, which was so sad but really beautiful. Song Joong Ki was, of course, fantastic. But now I'm really missing him again. :(

Have a great weekend, everyone!

So my friend is a stay at home dad and I work at night we both enjoy cooking so we get together during the day and cook. Last week we attempted ramen, not the package stuff, though I suspect if we called what we made in front of anyone else ramen they'd slap us, happily it was good.

Next week we're planning on getting together to make kimchi, I hope. Does anyone know a good place to find a recipe and what we might need to make kimchi.

Trot Lovers-love it

You're all Surrounded- What an intense ending to this week.

Fated to Love you- so far so good

I watched the first episode of Marriage, Not Dating not sure if I'll continue, it's just hard for me to watch Han Groo not killing everyone in sight.

RoomMate- I think it was last week Ga-yeon said she wanted to date, I volunteer myself. In all seriousness does anyone know where I can watch Ga-yeon's match? MMA doesn't hold much interest to me but I'd still like to watch her fight.

Is anyone else watching All About My Siblings? I watched at first because of Aoi Yu and Eita, I stayed because I truly enjoyed it. In my time away from Japanese dramas I had forgotten that the Japanese prefer to use life as a source of problems instead of pulling them from thin air.

The primary reasons I started watching Asian film and dramas are first I was so sick of Hollywood's artificial happy endings, not that I'm against happy endings per say but I want them to make sense in the world of the story. And the second reason is that I love that asian film, especially the Japanese, understand that film is a visual medium and sometimes you can say more with just a picture than you can with all the words in the world, I don't know if Hollywood forgot that or never knew but I'm glad someone does.

I watched All About My Siblings. I'm curious to see what Eita's story is. Also Hashimoto Ai. She has a lot of potential. I really enjoyed her in Amachan. I'd like to see her play a wicked, evil role, I think she'd be well suited for one. I enjoyed Aoi Yu's character in Osen.

I love Hashimoto Ai.

I'm pretty sure she has played wicked – she has done some horror (I have no stomach for it, so I haven't watched those films of hers). Another, Sadako 3D and, by the sounds of the synopsis, Avatar.

Her Confessions character wasn't exactly loveable, and she has played a couple of roles where characters had rather "cold" personas (Kirishima, Kanseito) - all of which made me think she could do evil extremely well.

You see a glimpse of "coldness" in Hashimoto Ai's character in Amachan , along with a bit of rage as well.

I'd like to see her in a film noir role. She'd be a knockout in that sort of setting. Well, at least how I visualize her anyways.

I would just love to see her in anything, film noir and otherwise!

She's actually the one actress I could see as Nodame if they ever decided to make a new Japanese version (not that it's needed of course.), her Hard Nut character was a good indication that she could pull off that quirky/weird.

Maangchi is a good site to use to learn how to cook Korean food, although depending on where you live, it might be hard to find certain key ingredients like red pepper paste. You can always order it from online though if it's not readily available and you really want to try.
Link: http://www.maangchi.com/

There are a lot of other sites too - there's this one older lady who lives in the US now, I think, but she's originally from Korea and she has a blog dedicated to Korean cooking for non-Koreans. I'll see if I can find the link.
There's also here: http://kimchimari.com/
And you can always try Youtube too.

There are some channels on YouTube and ROKU about Korean food making, and Drama Fever has just started carrying a new series about it.

I don't know about other areas, but even here in Phoenix (not noted for it's large Asian community) it is pretty easy to find most ingredients - I live only about 4 miles from a huge Asian grocer.

If you have the time and patience, some things like red pepper paste are not hard to make, but still a lot easier to just buy online.

I haven't watched All About My Siblings (Wakamono tachi) yet, but definitely will. The whole cast is so good that it could have the most random sounding synopsis and I would still go for it. Hashimoto, Tsumabuki, Eita I pretty much always watch, Mitsushima, Yu and Emoto are always compelling as well.

Plus, slice-of-life, realistic dramas are so much more my thing than those with contrived problems (which is why I tend to watch more J than K dramas and just about never any TW dramas).

Watched All about My Siblings.... what an intense first episode! The opening montage was touching already, and everything that followed.... cried and laughed. Best of all, it felt real – there is some family out there struggling like this.

What a difference excellent writing and superb casting can make. I feel like there was more in one single episode than most dramas have going for them in their entire run. This one is going to go all directions for sure. Tsumabuki and Emoto stood out especially, Hashimoto... intriguing (Nomura better watch out!) And Eita is going to be pretty dark, isn't he?

Well, I'm ready for sweat, blood and tears of this one, if it continues like the first episode, it could be one of the top dramas of the year.

On gooddrama. I think some where also watching it on dramafever?

All about My Siblings is a slice of life drama – very different genre from Nodame. Serious, real-life stuff. Laughter comes from a few lighter scenes (the siblings squabbling).

Note – Eita barely makes an appearance in the first episode, but he'll definitely feature more prominently from ep. 2 onwards.

As for Nodame – it has a very particular kind of humour, if you can't get into it, don't beat yourself up about it. It's a fantastic drama, but I also understand if people say they don't get it. If you haven't watched many J-dramas, I would recommend trying it a year down the line – I didn't get it when I first tried it (dropped after half an episode, same with Hana Kimi, which has the same kind of humour), but I loved both of these after more exposure to Japanese manga-esque humour.

Thank you aluaa! I will give ep 1 a try later. :)

I love to cook so any good cooking blogs are always welcome.

I haven't tried making kimchi yet, but it's on my to-do list. I'll be attempting natto (Japanese fermented soybeans) this week first!

I just made my first batch of kimchi, and it was awesome! I skimped on the (1/4 cup of red pepper), and the ginger was stronger than the garlic, so I'll have to step and be more brave next time, but it was delicious! I love Korean food!

Good for you! I would never have tried to make kimchi myself - it seems like such a daunting task, especially when you consider that the traditional way of making it is in giant jugs that you then bury in the earth for months - but I'm glad it turned out fairly well for you. I do have some red pepper paste now (which I bought on a trip to a much more cosmopolitan city) so maybe I'll be brave and try it someday.

Surprised to see that DramaCrazy is still up. For quite a while they were just ripping off subs from Viki and other sites, and most (all?) of their stuff was not licensed.

GoodDrama, DramaFire, and a few similar sites also get a lot of DMCA takedown notices, such as this one http://www.chillingeffects.org/notice.cgi?sID=1529418

Hi beanies. Happy weekend.

So I started Marriage Not Dating last weekend and I really liked it. It's fun and cute but it hits the emotional beats well without getting bogged down by them. It's very balanced so far and I kind of love how everyone's playing everyone else. If the genre were different, it could totally be a melodrama. The musical cue they use for Jinwoon cracks me up too. It has these quirky stylistic choices that I see in a lot of TvN shows that I just love. I hope it remains fun!

I wondered if anyone watched Queen of the Night (the K-movie) and wanted to talk about it. I saw it a few months ago and liked it well enough, although it's one of those movies that's pretty much dependent on a married couple not being honest with each other and having serious issues with communication.

FTLY: We're now at the arc where I started to really hate Ethan Raun's character in the Taiwanese version, her too for letting him get away with it but mostly him. I really hope K-FTLY handles their marriage better.

Marriage Not Dating: I wasn't expecting much from this drama, the character descriptions were pretty bland but I'm finding the female lead very relatable. Perhaps because the female leads in HSK and FTLY are more caricatures? Which I'm okay with for FTLY as all the characters are like that but Soo Young is turning me off High School King. She makes me feel like my Granny- I'm nagging her to stand up straight, not to slouch, you're hair's a mess tidy it up! And suffering from severe second hand embarrassment. Despite my love for SIG I think I have to drop it.

But on the upside Doctor Stranger is over and LJS's not project might be good.

A lot of people agreeing with you is why the ship wars broke out in the first place.....if Jin Se-yeon was a better actress or had better chemistry with Lee Jong-seok, the ship debate wouldn't even have existed.

Dr Stranger basically turned itself into bs when it became all about the first love obsession. Which was from Day 1, really. Still, at least it's over now, thank goodness.

Hello beanies!
Happy friday and ot! Am late to the party today as I had to join my own celebration for my birthday earlier this week. (and of course I ended up with the dirty pint while playing ring of fire). Best birthday present? Bamboo mat to sleep on to make it colder and a hair pin that looks like the one given by the 4th prince in Bu Bu Jing Xin.

Kdrama toddlers style the week of kisses:
- 3 year olds had a new girl. She was quickly checked out by one of the guys: he kept giving her his fruit, holding her and and show her around and generally trying to cuddle. They also made sure to get matching star stickers.

-1,5-2 year olds: one couple was blowing kisses across the table to each other and running hugs whenever we moved.

- Previous class also have this interesting intereactions: one of the boys, Y, always tries to get girl R's attention by going this: showing of his stomach and trying to get her to touch it.

- Tha player: I was given a hug by the player and girl no. 3 at the same time. Suddenly they are kissing, no just one peck but 3! I asked them what they were doing and they just giggled and moved away. The player keeping an arm around her and kissing her cheek over and over. I then turn my back for one second, just to find the player with an arm around girl no. 5 and kissing her cheek. Later he also kissed girl no. 2 in celebration of their team winning a game.

Dramaland
Joseon gunman: still going good. LJK loks amazing, and loving the gunman outfit.

- Marriage, not dating: enjoyed the first two episodes. Hope this drama continues with the cute and fun.

-Started watching Biscuit Teacher: GHJ hasn't aged at all has she?

I keep saying it but your toddlers could easily pass for the subjects of full grown kdramas, if you made them taller. Though I think a toddler may have written the scripts for Doctor Stranger, too.

And ooh, Biscuit Teacher! I loved it, and I am normally not into noona romances at all. But I went into it only for Gong Hyo-jin, she makes any drama worth it.

Haha, I read some of the recaps for Doctor Stranger, it does seem like the kind of things that the toddlers would come up with. (The 5 year olds used to play hospital where everyone had something deadly and was put on IV drips).

Biscuit Teacher: Yes I heard people talking about it so I thought, why not? Gong Hyo-Jin was definitively one of my reasons for watching it. She is awesome.

Hi! I'm finally making it back to visit the OT!

Oh wow, it was your birthday! ....... Happy Birthday Manin!! ........ I hope you had a great day!

I have to say that the bamboo mat sounds fantastic. I could use one of those or ANYTHING ELSE that would make it cooler to sleep. It's just that the weather is getting hot again and it's awful.

That little toddler showing his stomach is clearly already practicing his "look at my abs" move. ...... *laughing*

I watched a little bit of the first eps of Joseon Gunman and yes, LJK is lookin' good in those outfits.

Oh my goodness, Biscuit Teacher! Quite good! I hope you like it. ........ And you're absolutely right, Gong Hyo-jin does look like a single day doesn't go by her. Lucky, lucky girl! ...... Enjoy the drama and take care.

I haven't found a drama worth watching after YFAS.
I might try to marathon FTLY after it's done airing.

Non kdrama watching lately:

Sailor Moon Crystal - Oh so good. The new animation is so pretty. Opening song is good, too.

Uncut, subtitled Sailor Moon (Hulu) - So good, so many memories. Currently halfway through the eps that are up on Hulu.

Snowpiercer - Watched with the husband. We both enjoyed it and hope there will be more Hollywood/Chungmuro joint ventures in the future.

Born on the 4th of July - Husband is a Marine, so this was a good watch for the 4th of July. The 2nd half wasn't as good as the first, but it was a memorable movie.

Guys the dramas are so awesome right now! I'm excited about every single show!

God's Quiz 4: Well I COULD talk about how touching the last episode's case was, but can't see how I can talk about that when the ending was completely CRAZY! No explicit spoilers ahead, but my tone could give away the nature of what happened so proceed carefully. I'm seriously so grateful that there are really great dramas airing right now, otherwise the (ongoing!) wait for this next episode would be SO EXCRUCIATING. Who am I kidding, it's still driving me freakin' crazy! I'm not going to say anything specific because I've been spoiled for shows I hadn't watched yet before, but those of you who have seen the most recent episode know why I'm freaking out and know that it can't possibly happen right?! If they go there, I'm seriously gonna lose it. Now the preview gives me the idea that it might be a fluke, but….if it's not a dream then I'm not sure how things are gonna be alright :(

Marriage, Not Dating: LOVE. Given the fact that so many drama's are getting recapped right now, it makes sense that this one would get shafted. Although I admit I was hoping for a first episode recap or a first impressions write-up of some sort because it really is off to a great start. It moved very speedily and the two leads are perfectly cast. Yeon Woo-Jin oozes charisma in this role and this is the first time I've ever felt attracted to him despite the fact that I've adored him ever since Ojjakyo Bros. I don't know what it is he's doing differently, but it's working. I also think I just really like the character. Despite the fact that he's playing the typical chaebol who doesn't want to get married etc., the writing and his acting are doing a good job of making him really likable despite that. Plus, I am seriously SO STOKED for him to fall for our lead girl because she is such a character and I love her! Seriously, Han Groo is so spunky and yet wears her heart on her sleeve. I adore her character, especially at the end of episode 2. Not to mention, this show is just plain hilarious! It was so funny when she goes out dancing and her and her ex are all grinding on each other and then turn around and freak out. And then later at the cafe he hits on her again! Priceless.

High School King of Savvy: Woah, I knew I was enjoying myself with this one, but I don't think I really understood how much until these last two episodes. I have no idea how to describe how I feel about this couple. I had no idea I'd adore them this much or get this caught up in their romance. I thought I was in it for more of an odd-couple teamwork sort of thing and that we'd watch his endearing crush on her play out without any fulfillment perhaps. But in episode 7, the show actually managed to make me start genuinely wanting Soo Young to look to Min Seok because, at the end of the day, I find their interactions more entertaining and comfortable.
I don't really know how to explain...

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

but there is something very warm and enveloping about Min Seok and his tendency to value the people around him. This is why I actually understand and really enjoy that Soo Young went for him so quickly. She actually reminded me a lot of my self there. The pacing is actually very refreshing to me because of this. After finding out that Jin-Woo is less than the person she thought he was, AND finding out Min-seok's feelings, she quickly comes to realize that she's had someone looking out for her and valuing her much more than JW did, and I think that's enough for feelings to grow. I love how she just goes for it! There are so many issues that need to be resolved for them, but for now, I like how they're taking a chance on romance, without worrying about the consequences.

Woahh...I did not mean to write this much haha, we'll see if anyone actually wants to read all that lol...

Loving pretty much every other show airing too, but these are the only ones I had a lot to say about so I'll leave it at that.

1) Currently enjoying Marriage Not Dating, but, my word, Han Groo's character is wearing me out. For my sanity - and my love of Yeon Woo Jin - I hope I'll fall in love with her character eventually, just as YWJ's character surely will.

2) I'm trying to keep myself from yawning over the writing in You're All Surrounded so I've only kept myself updated with the recaps here on DB. In case I've missed anything, one question I would like to ask: does Dae Gu know about Pan Seok's son (yet)? You know, on the night of his mother's murder?

I agree about the Marriage, not dating heroine. She's really annoying and stalker-ish and I'm embarrassed for her actions. The only saving grace is that Han Groo is really a good actress and I feel her pain when she's crying. It looks like they are starting to make her more sympathetic and likeable judging from this week's episodes.

De-lurking to make my first comment ever: I need to know if I'm the only one obsessed with Triangle? Pacing issues aside, I LOVE IT. Some of the exposition is a bit ham-fisted, but the major events are portrayed with such pathos and nuance that I actually find myself looking forward to Mondays.

First comment ever?! Cool!

Like years ago, when I had my first comment, I was pretty nervous and wondering whether people would reply or just ignore me...

Haven't started Triangle.... Is it funny (or sweet) at all, or is it just darky dark and dark, and with a lot of reveng-y kind of things and "I will get you, if it is the last thing I do before I die" kind of thing?

Yes, I was worried about the same thing! Thanks for replying!

I don't find the show to be overly dark at all. The revenge theme drives the plot, but I think that the heart of the story is about redemption and finding your place in the world. What could be sweeter than that?

Wel, I wouldn't call myself obsessed, but I am enjoying Triangle. I don't have any issues with the pace, I find it logical and coherent with the flow of the whole story. The mobsters and loansharks are fun to watch, it's cute how they are almost a makeshift family.
I am looking forward to seeing the developments among the three brothers.
A thing I liked less was the chilhood picture thingy. Cheap and cheesy, I hope the drama won't make a big deal out of it and we won't have another couple fated to love each other.

re: Triangle, you're not alone! It may be flawed, but it has so much heart that I can't help caring a lot about what becomes of our main characters.

Yeah, the villains are cartoonish and things get slow sometimes, but the three brothers and Jung-hee keep me coming back, and I love some of the side characters like Madame Jang and Madame Min.

Hi all,
Just finishing up my vacation. I'm sitting on the shore of Mono Lake, listening to a mother duck quacking at her chicks and waiting for tourists to come by. I wish I could post a photo for you, but I guess you can just Google it.

Talked with two Korean couples this week. They were surprised I recognized their language. One man said Yolo and the other said Aigo, so how could I miss it?

Had plenty of time to catch some dramas.

DS- - Laughed from the bridge scene on. Highly recommend reading the finale recap for the snarky remarks about bullets made of unicorn tears.

Triangle--Loved this week. Mmmm...on the kiss. So sweet.

YAAS-- I like this sweet couple too. Not sure how I feel about the Captain. Is she good or is she bad?

We Got Married-- What a strange idea for a show. Taecyon is very mature for a 26 year old. Sort a grandpa in a young man's body. Both couples were cute, but I found Hong chi's story more interesting. Has anyone watched it?

Must drive home now (five hours). Check in with you later.

In regards to WGM Global Edition season 1, I watched it a while back. It's one of those shows that seems ridiculous on paper but sucks you in when you watch it. I liked the Lee Hong Ki - Fujii Mina couple. They seemed more natural to me plus they did not have the language barrier. Taecyon just seemed like he's too aware that it's just a show and is having a real hard time pretending that they're dating/ in love/married. Gui Gui was cute and she brought the fun to that pairing.

I hope you got back safely!

I haven't caught up on most of my kdramas this week, though I will raise a big, happy GOOD RIDDANCE! to Dr Stranger for Heads' sake (and gummi's, but Heads is the one with the curse....)

As for what I did watch:

Triangle - This drama may be flawed, but it really has heart. episode 20 was so good, and in more ways than just one - we get a revelation for another brother, and finally an OTP kiss! we were so long past the halfway mark that I was sure it was never going to happen.....but ooh, that was a GOOD kiss.

Trot Lovers - still formulaic (I groaned at the fall-on-top-of-each-other moment) but again, not lacking in heart at all. And Eunji <333

Marriage Not Dating - this one disappoints me. I LOVE Han Groo, and I really like Yeon Woo-jin. They're good actors, and good here. But they have absolutely no chemistry, in my eyes anyway. Damn.

Also started Let's Eat, which I absolutely LOVE except for the fact that it makes me hungry all the time. I'm up to episode 8 and absolutely adore everyone, and even Barasshi the dog. Great cast, too - I'd

(also I looked up the leading man because I thought he looked familiar.....and he turned out to be an idol actor! A member of Beast, no less! He's actually really good, I hope Yoon Doo-joon will pursue other acting projects in the future. Oh, and I really want Yoon So-hee in her own lead role in a primetime drama too)

Let's Eat is one of those drama you need to watch with a bowl of ramen / ddeokbokki / bibimbap / gyoza / whatever nearby otherwise you'll end up starving indeed. (I googled recipes afterwards too.)

It's also one of those shows where the idol casting actually works. He's perfectly suited for the role and it's an ensemble drama, where the secondary characters (dog included!) carry the drama just as much on their shoulders as the two leads.

I wouldn't even have guessed he was an idol if I hadn't wikied him, he did a great job.

What is it with the boys of Beast all turning out to be decent to not-bad-at-all in their acting roles anyway? First Junhyung in Monstar, then Kikwang in Twenty Years Old (yes, I know they were playing idols and Kikwang was even playing himself but even that takes a baseline level of skill to do) and now Doo-joon here. Though the last of the three is the only one playing a character who is clearly not himself....and he's doing really well. Looks like I have to start paying attention to this group, hmmmm.

I've learned to keep some edibles on hand when I watch now. I wonder how the cast did not gain 20 pounds each by the end of filming, look at the amount they eat on camera.

I saw Ki-kwang in Me Too, Flower!...where he was cutely endearing and chasing his noona crush (and cop partner) Lee Ji-ah. I saw the first episode way back when it released and didn't like it, the storyline felt like a cliched indian serial, I thought the heroine can't speak satoori and the guy can't act. But after it finished I was shocked to see the ratings on gooddrama.net. So i thought just in case Is it any good?

I liked it. I can say it has probably a load of more cliches the you can imagine but I still liked very much until about halfway then it went downhill but never became a drag for me, it just wasn't the direction I wanted to go. I'd give one or 2 more chances and if you still don't like it, drop it again.

I also couldn't stand the first episode but, after that, it was great because the heroine was feisty and was actually funny. However, I also agree with Lixie that the second half was meh; The heroine lost her sparkle and the storyline became standard K-drama cliches.

I also couldn't stand the first episode but after that it was really good. The heroine was feisty and hilarious and the story had some suspense to it. However, as Lexie mentioned, the second half was disappointing as all the k-drama cliches started showing up. The heroine also lost her sparkle. So, watch the first half and then skip to the end.

I really enjoyed Bride of the Century. Great chemistry between the leads (Yang Jin-Sung & Lee Hong-Ki), a kiss in most of the episodes, lots of comedy, mystery, and drama.

I liked the way the writer continued to dish out the twists and turns in BOTC with almost every conceivable kdrama cliché/trophe.

It was fascinating to watch the game of one-upmanship (like two queens on a chess board) that the mothers continued to play against each other and it certainly was never boring each time they trumped one another. They don’t just make threats for the sake of it. From day 1, both mothers actually had a plan of action and contingency plans set in place to materialize if needed. Never can accuse them of making idle (empty, harmless, ineffectual, and meaningless) threats.

Nooo I'm late again :(

I had too questions that have been gnawing at me for a while:

1. Why do K-dramas tend to air 2 episodes a week rather than 1?

2. A Kdrama is typically 1 hour long, so how long of a timeslot does it occupy? Like, are there commercials shown during it?

Don't know about why they show 2 epi per week but generally there is no commercials shown during it airs unless its on cable, that's what I know

Usually 1:20 to 1:30. Few if any commercials are shown during the show, there are long blocks of ads before and after.

Hey everyone...happy OT!

Missed posting here last week because, strangely enough--I tried three times and kept getting an error...which was weird, because I had just posted on the Triangle recap not even 15min earlier. Then I didn't get around to it with the busy weekend...eh, here's to hoping it'll work for me today :)

Triangle: This continues to be the only drama I'm continuing to watch as it airs, and the only one I'm really vested in the characters and story. Yes, it's been a slow-moving plot, but now we're finally getting into the thick of things with the final brother reveal. And the kiss! *swoon* Now that's what all drama kisses should look to for guidance...you could actually feel the emotion behind it, not like most drama kisses were it seems forced and rigid. I'm still waiting for Yang-ha to lose his marbles, once Plot Device Shin-hye reveals the truth...no way is he gonna be happy at all to learn that "those in his corner" are the two guys he hates. And I don't think Young-dal would even consider "losing" Jung-hee this time around out of guilt or noble idiocy, even if Yang-ha lost everything.

Jang Bori is Coming: I said I wouldn't watch it when I first heard of the drama, especially because of the plot (I'm so sick of the switched-at-birth secret trope and this sounded so similar to Twinkle Twinkle). So I haven't watched it at all...until this weekend. On the other hand, my mom absolutely loves these types of dramas...she's been trying to convince me to tune in, and I finally relented just for these two. Now, this won't mean I'll continue watching -- I might tune in to the finale to see if biatchass Min-jung gets what she deserves, but that's about it. Not even my fondness for Kim Ji-hoon will allow me to continue watching something that infuriates me...so much unnecessary drama angst.

Roommates: I've been meaning to tune in for the longest, especially reading the comments on past OTs. I finally tuned in because of Park Bom and the supposed scandal that stupid knets are uselessly dredging up. I've known about her since 2ne1 is one of the few kpop groups I listen to, so it was interesting to see her as the "alien" of the group. It's also interesting to see the dynamics of the group.

Is anybody watching The King of Food (with Shin Dong-yup as "King")? It's somewhat new - a little over 2 months since it aired. I find very interesting and hilarious, if given the right guests--although I watch it for the food of the day anyway, ha. I'm one of those cooking show junkies, so I used to watch a lot of Food Net shows...but I've tempered it as of late. It's been more about the showmanship/over-the-top-ness rather than cooking, imo.

I still need to catch up on Joseon Gunman (haven't even read the recaps yet!). Haven't yet decided whether to continue Endless Love or Feel Good Day for the time being, because sticking with just Triangle and Joseon Gunman seems like enough for my drama plate :)...

High School King of Savvy = I can't praise this show enough. Romcom at it's finest. Douchey abs boy need to get his family issues fixed then get a few years worth of therapy. My favorite character is definitely Soo Young. She is such a charming dork. Seo In Guk proves once again that he was born to act. He's a natural thespian.

Trot Lovers = I am watching this to see Choi Chun Hee's rise to stardom. Not feeling the romance yet. Maybe because the two guys are so tall or Eun Ji is so short or both, she looks like a 12 year old next to them.

Fated To Love You = so far so good. For Heads and Gummi's sake, I hope it doesn't take a nose dive. Good OTP chemistry, good setup, and lots of crazy minor characters. Park Hee Bon reminds me of Lee Min Jung for some reason.

Roommate = still having fun watching this show. I can't make any judgments on the octopus incident. It's debatable whether or not it was still alive when they started cutting it. See google for animals that still move long after they are dead.

Nodame is such a complex character. She's like Candy on crack with a little bit of spongebob squarepants thrown in. Hard to recommend anyone really.

Hmmm.. also, having surgery next week.. will be in the hospital a few days.. a little worried about it.. a little ticked off I'll miss some episodes.. hope their wifi works.. surgeons, please do a good job.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

I'm sad that there haven't been any news about Im Siwan confirming the lead position in tvN's Misaeng. The plot holds a lot of potential, and what can I ask for more if my bias will be the lead ?

Their agency said that decision would be announced no later than last Sunday it's been almost a week. Keep your promise Mr.Agency ><

Oh no, I really wanted him to take the lead in that! He's been working his way through smaller roles and supporting roles for so long, and imo he's as good as some equally hyped It Boys his age - he'd give Kim Soo-hyun a run for his money.
