Lee Je-hoon confirms drama return with Secret Door

girlfriday: So it’s doubleplusgood news day! Lee Je-hoon is back from the army, and it’s official — he’s going to star in Secret Door!

javabeans: Hold on. *breathes deeply* *needs a moment* *collecting self*

girlfriday: *taps fingers impatiently*

javabeans: *still needs a moment* *self may not be collectable*

girlfriday: Do I have to have this conversation by myself?

javabeans: Okay, okay, fine. I’m pulling it together. I am, if nothing, a professional.

girlfriday: Where’s the scream?

javabeans: All the screaming is on the inside. It’s silent and torturous. Maybe that’s a good segue into the role he’ll be playing, of Crown Prince Sado.

girlfriday: You mean because he gets locked in a rice chest and left to die a slow, agonizing death?

javabeans: Like I said, silent and torturous. It’ll be amazing. Okay, also horrifying, but also amazing to watch Han Seok-kyu playing his hardass, domineering king of a father, Yeongjo, making for a pretty intense conflict between him and his idealistic son. (Yes, this drama is taking some creative liberties by making Sado the tragic wronged party, and not, say, violent and maybe sexually depraved. Fiction! Or should I say, per the Korean, faction? (Fact + fiction.))

girlfriday: Or conspiracy! You never know! I’m looking forward to the drama’s take in rewriting history from Sado’s point of view, especially since Lee Je-hoon will do tragically wronged prince so well.

javabeans: For sure, in this story, Imma go with “Sado was framed!” Oppa didn’t mean it!

girlfriday: Is it too much to hope that the secret door will be in the rice chest?

javabeans: OOH. So Oppa escaped and lived a happy carefree life under a new identity and didn’t die a horrible, grisly death? Yes, that is my new truth.

girlfriday: They call it fusion for a reason!

I've read in some sites that he will also star in Detective Hong Gil-Dong. Is it true? Or did he decline the film project?

I like him very much through his movies. All the movies I have seen him in, his characters were great. I haven't seen any of his interviews and stuff, but I think people mostly likes him cause of the movie choices he makes.

For lack of better adjectives and coherent sentences to express his awesomeness, let me just put it this way:

As an actor, he is to me what Rim is to Mary.

And if you have not seen him in Bleak Night, I suggest you watch it right now. He's so TALENTED I can't believe he exists.

Story sucked, of course, but his pretty pretty tears were awesome.

LOL, even better if the secret door in the rice chest leads to 2014 Gangnam a la Rooftop Prince. He can go to a night club and maybe get busted by the YAAS cops for sexual depravity.

Jokes aside, I am looking forward to this one.

I've seen this part of Korean history being portrayed on screen so many times I've lost count. So it's good to see them changing things up a little and making Sado the victim. Last time a drama did that (Jang Ok-jung), it failed miserably - let's hope this one holds it's own since it's up against Nodame's remake.

They have a deadly combo whilst every other upcoming sageuk looks so ridiculously crappy. I'm looking forward to this.

FINALLY. He's going to be fantastic! And with Han Seok Kyu? I'm hyperventilating already.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the conflict between Yeongjo and Sado is re-written. If we're going by Lady Hyegyeong's account of the event, Sado was both violent and sexually depraved AND a tragic victim. Her analysis of Sado's psychological state was that his actions were driven by an intense conflict between his fear of Yeongjo and his desire to please him as a son. That doesn't make Sado's actions justifiable, but it makes his character a bit more sympathetic. It sounds like this drama is going to make Sado out to be entirely innocent, but in my opinion, Sado doesn't have to be totally whitewashed to become a tragic victim.

In any case, I'm definitely looking forward to this!

Thanks for the historical background and the psychological analysis on the prince character. I totally agree that the character does not need to be whitewashed to reach the tragic side. That oversimplification is not needed and we audience are capable of understanding a more in-depth story and character study. The latter will actually allow the drama to be much more intriguing and poignant. And they have a very very capable young actor at their disposal here.

This should be fusion sageuk with secret door as portal to Seoul 2014. I can't take the heartbreaks if this drama really kills Sado in slow death inside the rice chest. And I'll watch at least 2 Sado. Sado Lee Je Hoon here and Sado Yoo Ah In in movie "Sado"

It's fun to see his face up there on my screen.
I watched ALL of Fashion King for him.

He and his FK co-star - Yoo Ah In will be playing the same character, Sado.

For that matter, Han Seok-kyu and Song Kang-ho, co-stars in the film Shiri will be playing the same character, Yeongjo.

For those who don't get Lee Je-hoon, please watch Bleak Night and The Front Line. In The Front Line, although his screen time was limited, I'll guarantee you won't forget his character.

Those two movies are just great.

There is so much acting when in this drama I don't think I can handle. It's like watching Lawrence Olivier act with Tom Hanks. This is soooooooooooooo awesome. Thank you dramagods! First Joseon Gunman, then a whole bevy of romcoms and now this. Someone in Kdramaland does love me!

just once I would like to see a k drama that portrays the character of Sado accurately: a rapist, sadist, and serial murder who woul've been a disaster to Korea had he lived to become king.
I think Lady Hong (his wife) was a very empathetic woman, also her Confucian culture preventd her from criticising her husband/sire of her son, which is why she makes him sympthetic (tormented by his high performing/former prodigy father*)... Yet how awful would it have been to Lady Hong: married to sadistic rapist who murdered their servants and other concubines... who was also mentally illy (on top of his sadistic/psychopathic persoalit disorder). Sex would have been a torment with a man like Sado. Then her son tries to make his father a hero, and history/popular culture makes Prince Sado out to be a victim.
Please just make an accurate movie that takes Lady Hong at her word.

*intelligence is highly linked to X-chromosome, so Choi Sukbin was probably a highly intelligent woman who rose from slave to consort, but given Yeongjo's own cold personality, probably a less nice personality than Dong Yi makes her out to be, even if she was empathetic to Queen Inhyon, like Yeongjo was empathetic to Prince Sado's victims, his people as well as concerned for his country's future.
I think Yeongjo, like many brilliant men was a terrible father. The fact that his concubine was beneath him intellectually meant that he had a weak son, further exacerbating the parenting flaws that men of his character profile have with their sons.
