Kolorful Palette: Rocking it [Joseon Gunman]

It’s difficult to describe what makes Joseon Gunman so enjoyable; on paper it sounds entirely generic, and yet it has me glued to the screen. There isn’t much intrigue and I have yet to see a plot twist. The cliffhangers aren’t even really cliffhangers since we usually know the inevitable outcome, and even when we don’t, the preview gives it away. But still, I sit there on the edge of my seat, as if my brain insists that I have no idea what’s going to happen.

As is most often the case, I suppose the magic is in the details. This drama is gorgeously directed, well cast, and is host to a plethora of likable characters. Even when I know something terrible is going to happen, I still hope it won’t and dread watching it happen. When I know something good is going to happen I eagerly await seeing how each detail will unfold. On top of all that, Joseon Gunman has some fantastic action scenes, and I never get tired of watching Lee Jun-ki in all his different personas (he may have even more styles here than he did in Time Between Dog and Wolf).

I wish I had some deep and meaningful reason for choosing this scene to draw, but if I’m honest, it’s just because Yoon-kang looks like a badass. He’s in the midst of being hunted by Moo-deok and his men, but he’s all, “It’s cool, I’ll just casually chill here on this rock while I wait to make my move.” For those who don’t remember, this is right before he confronts Moo-deok to find out if he is the gunman who killed his father (or if he knows who is). For some reason this shot gives me strong Iljimae vibes, which doesn’t really make any sense since thematically the character is totally different, and I haven’t even seen Lee Jun-ki’s version. I think perhaps the sweeping lock of hair combined with the pose reminds me of Jung Il-woo in Return of Iljimae (which is a drama I’d highly recommend).

My only real gripe with Yoon-kang is that he’s already so nice and perfect. Sure, he acts like a cavalier jerk some of the time, but we all know better. I sort of wish he had come back from Japan a little colder and darker, just so he would have room to grow. Maybe he could even shoot some people! I probably sound like some insane violent person for saying that, but I’d like to see him do some things he’ll regret and have to struggle with later. I’m also fairly baffled by his stance on guns in the first place. When he arrived, he had no qualms about shooting into a crowd to stop some random ruffians (while standing on an unstable boat I might add) but when it comes to confronting people that are actually a threat, his technique is to shoot into the air and flee? And what about Moo-deok? Yoon-kang pretty much had to kill him after revealing his identity, but it didn’t seem like he could have gone through with it. Moo-deok was kind enough to do the deed for him, but I’m pretty curious how it would have turned out otherwise.

Yoon-kang may still feel like old Yoon-kang behind his many masks, but Soo-in has certainly changed, and that’s nice to see, particularly in a sageuk (where female leads tend to be less dynamic than their male counterparts). Given past events, it makes sense that she would have become bitter and given up on the part of herself that fought for her beliefs. She’s certainly not the only person to try to fill the void in her life with material things, and I’m hoping that Yoon-kang will be the one to re-kindle her optimism and sense of justice. Normally I would hope for her to discover his true identity as soon as possible, but I actually think it would be more fun to watch her fall in love with Hanjo, and it would only make their relationship stronger in the long run.

It feels like this drama is just getting started, and I’m already looking forward to drawing it in the weeks to come.

I also wish Yoon Kang had come back a little bit darker, and not quite so squeamish about shooting people.

I don't think it's a violent impulse, necessarily, to want him to be like that, because I think we can all recognize that the world he lives in a little bit cutthroat, and I think it would be more fun to watch him struggle within that gray area.

Lovely! You captured this scene perfectly as always.

It's funny that you brought up Iljamae. I actually saw both versions, and at times, this drama has strongly reminded me of both of them... though maybe it's just the sexy black clothes that are to blame. At times it even reminds me of Hong Gil-dong and Princess' Man... so it could just be an issue with my memory more than anything else, lol.

I was actually hoping he'd kill someone as well, so I guess we're both a little psychotic. Then again, I like my heros a little dark and gritty, so what can I say?

Looking forward to seeing what scene you draw next. It's been a long time since I've watched so many high quality dramas at once, so you certainly have a lot of options!!

Yes, darker and darker please.

He is so badass in all his moves and action, but if there was that hint of darkness and coldness, it would have added lots of layers.

Right now, its just finding his dad's killer. I get that is a great purpose, but narratively I don't feel the urgency when his father was alive. And I wish the palace story gets woven into his storyline soon. It would add that extra conflict.

I can't get enough with the action scenes in this drama. LJK is fantastic in that area, isn't he?

I think my favorite scene till now is when Yoon Kang saved Hye Won! damn it drama, you just had to show that on slow motion and with music background so that I keep repating that scene.. Very well made.

You should watch the original Iljimae, Lee Jun-ki plays the main character as Iljimae. The story line and actors are awesome!

Except for the last episode, where strange and nonsensical things happened. And the the very end, things were even stranger.

Don't get me wrong- I really really like Iljimae. I think it's *awesome*.
I absolutely adore the (over the top) superhero stuff.

(I just have to pretend that the very ending didn't happen the way it did...)

Not just the ending, I felt it lacked some strong editing and directing all the way through.
Don't get me wrong, I still loved it.
The first time he dons that blue black cloak in joseaon gunman, I literally squeeled cuz it reminded me of iljimae so much !!!!!

And Jung Il woo's version has forever be in my to watch list ! someday! *sighs*

Love the drawing. As far as people's confusion about his shooting/not shooting certain people, I think he doesn't want to kill unless necessary. When he shot that man on the pier it was to stop him from killing someone else. When he fires into the air and runs, like with the mob, they really aren't his enemies so he doesn't want to kill them. As far as his reluctance to kill actual enemies, I think he would rather get information from them to clear his father's name and let them be punished later after he's gotten the masterminds. But I am glad he isn't completely sinister, doom-and-gloom, but managed to keep some of his kindness/humor, because otherwise he wouldn't feel like Yoon-kang if he was completely dark.

Beautiful. You captured that scene so well. I'm also thoroughly enjoying JG and Jun Ki is such a pleasure to watch.

"Not killing people" is also a practical choice. This isn't a Wuxia flick or Spaghetti Western or Steven Seagal actioner where the hero can splatter the landscape with bloody corpses and no one will notice. This is a political thriller set in a civilized country where Yoon Kang is a lone vigilante and nominally a foreigner. He cannot afford a public or government reaction to his actions, so, the less blood, the better.

There are very few people that he knows to have information. If he kills them, how would he make progress in finding the truth?

(I don't know why so many commenters overlook it, when they criticize him not killing... Everyone?)

I don't think they are criticizing, they (and me) just want his character to be more complex and dark !
And you are right, that point was not where he should kill. But it wasn't like he was sure he won't kill, it was like he was wrestled with indecision. He didn't know what he was going to do.

Oh, I wouldn't use the word "criticizing" recklessly...
I've seen comments about how stupid he was to not kill the first guy, and what an idiot that he was just threatening, and why didn't he just kill him right away, etc. There was a vast usage of "Stupid", "Idiot", "Crazy", "Weak", etc.

I don't think he was indecisive, I think that from the beginning he didn't want to kill those people, and he ASSUMED that they would be more scared of the sword on their throat at that very moment, more than of the Gunman finding out they told on him...

Hehe... So you think Yoon Kang is a bit too perfect, eh?

So many complained about Soo In being *not perfect*, that I'm glad to see that SOMEONE doesn't think that all characters need to be, straight from the beginning, all too perfect.

Even in Two Weeks, something inside me was repeating "Say it ain't so", and refusing to believe Tae San was really bad (before we found out that he was, indeed, not so bad after all).

The villain is always one step ahead of Yoon Kang.He 's so predictable regarding how to deal with his sister..I guess each knows the other's identity already .It' s very frustrating.

In politics, as well as business, there's a lot to gain from not revealing all the cards, and from pretend-play.

Both the villain and hero are into both.
They can't always be open about what they know. Not just in order to keep things going between themselves, but also, so others (people around them, the authorities, people who *would* get suddenly involved, etc.) won't interfere in their schemes.

*Honesty is not always the best policy*

omg you did it. you just put my thinking into actual sentences that make sense thank you!

the actors and the directing made this drama works for me not really the plot, I think we can all agree that the plot is standard sageuk plot. I just, I don't know but this drama is GOLD

Just got through eps 7 and 8 . . .

This was an excellent 50 minute drama episode streeeechhhhed out into two hours. The director seems to realize he hasn't got the scene descriptions or dialogue to fill the time slots, so he is spoiling his action scenes, which are actually very well choreographed, by making every shot twice as long as it should be.

For all of that, whenever Yoon Kang or Hye Won are on the screen, this show rolls along and has some spine to it. Finally, too, after being a frustration for several episodes, Soo In has been allowed to get her hands dirty--literally--and play out some of her character's potential. This is in spite of several scenes this week in which she is, again literally, just standing or sitting around in her hanbok, surrounded by space, fretting.

Hopefully we will see a scene in the next episode or so where she comes diving out of a doorway, knocking her servant down, followed by a BOOM and a cloud of smoke, and Soon In yelling "I DID IT! I FINALLY DID IT!

More good stuff, also, from the supporting members of Team Hanjo. I was beginning to wonder what was the point of the Hannemora character, but now he and the slave girl and the servant are going to have some fun together, and the actors appear to relish the chance to do fun things and speak fun words.

Looking forward to next week.
