Kolorful Palette: Cursing in the streets [High School King of Savvy]

It’s official; that overwhelming sensation of having too many compelling dramas to watch has finally returned. I’m pretty sure that’s a good thing, although my pasty white skin probably thinks I need to spend a little more time outside. High School Kind of Savvy is hardly reinventing the wheel, but it does what it does so well that I find myself completely caught up in all the hormonal angst, and anxious to see what all these flawed but likable characters will do next.

Although there’s not much that this drama does poorly, I think what really carries it and gives it that extra X-factor is Seo In-gook as Lee Min-seok. He’s perfectly cast, and I love how real his character feels, even in the midst of an unrealistic situation. How many “high school” dramas have we watched where the protagonists talk and act like adults? Lee Min-seok is such a teenager, and it’s fantastic. He took on his brother’s job with shockingly foolhardy bravado and responds to almost every circumstance emotionally and impetuously before he’s even realized it. He’s terrible at filtering or restraining himself, and I find myself sometimes cringing at his complete lack of awareness regarding how serious a situation is. His immaturity is balanced by a kind and likable personality though, and I don’t even find myself thinking that he needs to grow up because he’s pretty much the quintessential teenage boy, and there’s really nothing wrong with that. I just hope that he doesn’t end up busting himself.

Normally I think I would find it hard to find a romance like Min-seok and Soo-young’s particularly believable, but she seems like the kind of person who would benefit from being with someone slightly childish. It’s sad that she is so resigned to having an unhappy life, and Min-seok seems to bring out some much-needed fight in her. That’s one of the reasons I liked this scene so much, where Min-seok takes her out on a scooter ride to cuss out a horrible customer after a string of unfortunate events. I’m not one for profanity, but I don’t think it was about insulting that nasty woman at the convenience store. It was about Soo-young standing up for herself, and believing that she deserves to be respected (not just by others, but by herself). Anyone would feel horrible after being spurned by a crush and then fired, but Soo-young accepted it as some sort of inevitable fate. I was much relieved to see her actually accept Min-seok’s help and have some fun. They’re also just so dorky and cute in this scene that it’s pretty hard not to love it.

I suppose the overall arc of this drama is fairly predictable, but I’m still on pins and needles waiting to see who finds out what, and when. The plot isn’t very complicated so there’s potential to see some lag towards the end of the series, but I think Min-seok is charming enough to keep us entertained, and I really just can’t get enough of the way he wears his every emotion on his sleeve. In fact, I plan to watch Episode 7 as soon as I finish writing this.

Next week, Joseon Gunman! How I’ll pick just one scene is beyond me.

SO gorgeous <3 THIS scene was the first time I realised that these two could be more than just allies and that they might actually be good for each other.

Normally I would find this pairing icky, not because of the age difference but due to the fact that he is still in high school. But I trust this show to address that issue, when Soo Young eventually finds out and hopefully give us enough reasons to make us believe in their romance. (Also, knowing that Seo In Gook is 26 in real life helps)

I only pray it doesn't lose steam(or foray into angstville) in the second half as is the normal scenario with these quirky funny dramas.

Wonderful picture. I'm loving this drama - in fact, I'm in the same boat you are. Too many dramas, too little time. Can't wait to see what scene you choose for Joseon Gunma!!

I think it has been a long time for me to believe into the character so undoubtedly. I see their world, not a drama stage and it feels marvelous to be pulled along. I have been invested in characters before but it was different with yelling at the writer etc.

Not watching this unfortunately (no time!!!) but I've been hearing positive comments about this. It'll have to go on the "watch later" list.

Seo In-gook has got that 'something' which always makes you pay attention.

Lost interest in this show what the leads getting together..find them comically appealing but romantically is a different story..with the age, maturity level, career trajection, everything points to failure since if they did go further then puppy love..i feel both needs someone stable and grounded to fill each others void..wat happens once his childlike persona disappears..the only reason she likes him is because he doesnt follow societies rules since he never experience it..once maturity hits will he still remain the same..she isnt changing anytime soon so i hope since the romance happen this early it will fizzle out soon enough..

you are so pessimistic. dramas don´t have to be taken as seriously as real life. just let it happen in the drama. it is just fantasy. everyone knows it. so no need to analyze it with such a dark tone like it is reality.
buy the ticket, take the ride. fine, you were on the wrong train. step off. but don´t expect the train to change direction just cause you wanted it to go somewhere else.

Wow you're so off on the childlike persona disappearing. Trust me...personality is pretty much made by high school. People may mature but personality is pretty resilient. As we can see from the heroine's personality. I know way too many people who are still very much like their high school selves. Maturity isn;t equated with somberness. Hero knows the rules of society and so does heroine. Both of them talk about manners and basic etiquette. Both of them love their families. Both of them are kind to the oppressed and defend the weak and the insulted. Those are not childish immature qualities.

This is my favorite drama I'm watching right now. I am pretty much in love. Which has me more then a little nervous, since many dramas tend to fall apart about halfway to two thirds of the way through.

Dear drama gods,

Not this drama. Just spare this drama. Pleeeeeeeease.

Amen

P.S. Can we have a time jump at the end where we get to see the two of them officially (and legally) together? That would be swell.

age is just number- this is so true for this OTP. After Episode 9, I can't deny that they are just perfectly compatible. And SIK - he is just so perfect high shool kid and YHN is more naive/pure than high shool kid. I am enjoying this show so much. Thanks for picking up this scene to draw!
