High School King of Savvy confirms extension

I guess the universe decided that our high school corporate director had a little more maturing to do before we send him off into the sunset. Cable network tvN’s current Monday-Tuesday drama High School King of Savvy has confirmed a two-episode extension for the series, which will technically only include one extra episode and then a special to close. Honestly, I’m a fan of the 16-episode drama length and it’s rare to find a show that really needs more episodes, but when your show is a big hit and everyone’s clamoring for more, I suppose there are worse things than giving them one extra episode.

I just wish the announcement had come at a better time because the show is currently in its angst cycle, and the idea of more episodes of mopey Min-seok is quite unappealing at the moment. There’s been a definite slowdown ever since the drama’s focus stepped away from the secret identity hijinks, which was the heart of its premise and the reason why silly office machinations held our attention for so long — because there was something so fresh and fun about a kid running an office and doing a better job at being adult than the adults.

I know, the romance has to play through the angst and there’s no avoiding that. I just hope we don’t get bogged down by it for too long, because what makes this show fun and different is its quirky characters and their offbeat sense of humor. One extra episode of cute wacky fun: fine and dandy. Adding an extra hour to the mope-a-thon: not my idea of a good time. Make it count, Show.

High School King of Savvy now ends August 12 with a total of 17 episodes and a special, and Yoo Inna’s murder rom-com My Secret Hotel follows August 18.

I can watch them forever so I dont mind. but not when there is angst.
I want these characters to be happy.
you know, in some dramas you can take it all, but when a character grows on you and is THIS cute, elaborate, wonderful, you just think "no thanks, there is no need to pour bad shit over this guy!" how in the world has he deserved it? He meant to be honest you know....

if it gives us more cute I shall take it. especially Grandpa (omg his imitating Min Seok kicking the punch bag LOL)

From the looks of the episode 12 preview, I'll say we're lucky the angst won't be prolonged. I really do not want this show to get draggy, I'm enjoying it too much. Let's hope the extension will make it more awesome. Well, I get to look at Lee Soo-hyuk for one extra hour, that's a win. Right?

yeah, I did!
it is such an adorable, not-assy, cute, well created character that it would be a pity to have him mope around.
but the next episode preview at least gives some hope.

Yeah, total slowdown. Ick. An extension just makes me dread the upcoming episodes. Come on, Production. Do the show good.

I've never watched a drama that had a 'special episode' (except for You're All Surrounded, but that was an emergency situation, not an extension), but I imagine it will be behind the scenes bits, no goods, maybe mini interviews with the cast, that sort of thing.

I could be completely wrong though, lol.

After seeing spoilers for episode 12, I can only hope they get back to the fun soon enough. From the looks of it, the worse seems to be over. I miss the subplots and the subcharacters and I'm relieved that it looks like the OTP is finally going to a happy place. Now that's done, let's have Hyung Seok.

I'm ready for comedy-mystery.

I'm actually super excited about this, considering the sheer amount of things we still have to unravel/resolve/repair. I really like these writers but don't want them to have to rush through any emotional beats, since I care so much about all of the characters. A few things I see potential in:

-Repairing of Min-soek & Soo-young's relationship--repairing the friendship and, probably, the romance (which I think will require a time jump at some point in order to resolve satisfactorily)
-Min-soek's father discovering his double-life & relationship with Soo-young
-The Great Hyung Mystery (I'm less invested in this, but they will probably have to explain it at some point & I'm sure there will be some fallout here)
-Min-soek potentially getting discovered at work
-Soo-young & sis repairing their relationship, sis coming to terms with SY & MS's relationship
-Jin-woo's character arc--coming to the good side or going fully to the dark side
-SY's mom learning MS's real age & the fallout that may entail
-I am guessing that there will be a scare involving Grandpa, it's just inevitable (and realistic, given his mental state)
-I'm sure there's lots more but that's all I can think of off the top of my head...

Me too! There's still so much that needs to happen. In particular, we still need to know what is up with hyung and the connection between Minseok's family and Comfo/the president. iirc the promo materials have us a hint, but I'd still like to see how it actually plays out. Not to mention all of the character arcs you listed! I want to see our sisters on good terms again and less punching and more alliances out of the boys.

One of Lee Ha Na's interviews mentioned a reversal in the ending. I'm too curious now!

Also, does anybody else here think that the latest episode (12) seemed to have an extension filler? That one part of the scene sequence really wasn't necessary. It looked like an afterthought, although a cute one.

Where is this interview? I'd like watch/read it (if it's in English/has English subtitles, that is).

Just saw someone say in the soompi forum that that (Lee Ha Na saying there is a reversal in the end) is actually a misleading translation. Apparently, she just said that the chemistry between Soo Young and Jin Woo is so good that people are Speculating that there will be a reversal in the end.

I've watched episode 12 and [SPOILER DELETED]

Just as you said, they're probably going to use the next 5 episodes to settle all the mysteries surrounding the families, hyung, get the otp accepted by their families and probably a time jump in the last episode? Haha.

I can't wait for all the secrets to be revealed! Gimme!

I'm glad they're only do one more actual episode rather than two. With two, we most definitely would end up with boatloads of unnecessary plot-dragging angst. With just one, there's hope that we'll just get more of the cute and funny that makes this show so awesome.

I'm not eager or excited to have an extra episode, but I am more optimistic about it then I would be with two of them.

I somehow thought the extension was confirmed earlier... and that's why we got the slower episode 9 (though it was adorable to watch them on a date :--) )

I still trust the writers, so far I liked everything in this drama... and I think there is enough mysteries to focus on in the coming episodes (hyung, parents, accident...) to avoid dragging.
Fingers crossed the awesomeness remains till the end.

How are the new tvN dramas fairing in terms of ratings?

I think the ratings for "Marriage not Dating" are just as high as the ones for "High School King of Savvy". Are they both considered very popular?

Anything above 1% is considered a success as far as cable ratings go. Both shows are at around 1.5% so they are definitely a winner for TvN. I think 3% and above puts a show in phenomenon status (like the Answer Me series).

Wow, I just read on koreandrama.org that episode 10 got a 2.09 rating nationwide! If that is accurate, that's awesome. It experienced a huge jump from the past episodes. Marriage is doing well too like you said at 1.5%. I do wonder if the time MnD airs is a popular time slot or not in korea though...

Surprisingly enough, Marriage Not Dating occupies the more popular time slot, which was home to previous runaway hits like Emergency Couple and Answer Me 1994. I remember reading on Soompi that it's because the Friday-Saturday time slot is on the weekends, not to mention the show in this time slot airs at 8:40 pm-- so a broader audience is more likely to tune in. As in fewer potential viewers are asleep.

High School King of Savvy on the other hand airs at 11 pm on Monday and Tuesday-- definitely the more disadvantageous time slot in Korea. High School King's doing really well considering what it has against itself.

But fear not for Marriage Not Dating because I noticed that it's a pretty big hit on TvN Drama's Youtube, rapidly amassing views with its BTS content and episode clips.

Someone said HSKoS got 2.09% for episode 11 and 1.9++% for episode 12 in the forums.

Yes, I expect Marraige, Not Dating ratings to get higher and higher because it's awesome and I hope it's another runway hit too. Maybe other networks will pay attention to what Tvn is doing different and be inspired to go beyond the usual tropes and cliches.

To watch a newly minted noona-warrior intimidate ALL the high schoolers (boyfriend included) is so much fun, I can survive a few extra episodes, no problem. :)

What's up with Lee Ha Na's (SY) upper lip area? it's puffed up and is distracting me enough to wonder if it's the result of these insufferable botox fillers, thin actresses these days are filling themselves up with.... have not seen any of her other dramas so not sure.....

I have rarely been captivated by a drama to such extent that nothing is as important as catching it on Channel M. Aside from the wonderfully casted talents, I want to add that the music is OH! SO! COO-OOL! I want to salute this team of writers/directors for being in-tune with a intelligent audience; for giving this story the smart, witty and open approach, that might otherwise have turned out overtly and conservatively suffocating and boring! Hurray for turning out an EXCELLENT drama. Thank you!

I honestly was expecting two more episodes and was disappointed that it's only going to be one and a special. The writers have set up a back story involving the triangle that I really don't want them rushing through at the last minute. Without the extension there would only be four eps left and I would have hated to see those four eps filled with all the drama over what really happened with Min Suk and Jin Woo's fathers. They haven't even let us know the real reason "hyung" has put Min Suk in this mess, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has something to do with whatever happened to their father. On top of that "hyung" has to finally show up. There's also a big chance the show will do that 1 or 2 year time jump which would leave even less time to flesh out what's happening in the present.

Outside of that I hope we get a decent special. The last good one I saw was the one for the cast of "School 2013".

MS is too hyper and over-emotional.... stereotypical of a high-strung 18 yr old. Dealing with it day in day out may get stressful.... :)

The body language of SY is getting childish with every episode where i am finding the childlike slumpy-stoopy gait, the eyes-down stutter rather annoying.

The physical attraction MS feels towards SY was never clear from the onset. There is little chemistry between SY and MS. It's the individual actor that shine through with emoting (especially SIG). Together, the two actors are not convincing as a couple. Individually, SIG is especially successful in convincing the viewers of his feelings.

Somehow the relationship between MS and SY is beginning to be a little too oedipal. He has grown up without a mom... is that why he likes the older woman?

Do you mean the dramabeans site? Is it Supposed to remember them? It never does for me. (Unless you mean every time you go to type it in the little box pops up with the information for you to click on and autofill the boxes. Then it does that.)

I'm just wondering if I'm supposed to be getting emails when I get replies to my comments. I assumed that the reason we have to give our email is so we can be notified of replies, but I never receive any emails.
