Fated To Love You: Episode 5

Newlywed life turns out to be harder for our chaebol and his bride than either of them could have anticipated, especially when they’re living under the same roof with a meddling (but well-meaning) grandmother. Indeed, they’re about to find out that marriage is more than just wearing a ring and playing house—it’s about communication, understanding, and most of all, respect for the other person.

Fated To Love You saw a slight dip in ratings on Wednesday with 8.6%, but there’s still hope yet.

EPISODE 5 RECAP

At the Lee Manor, Mi-young gets mistaken for the new help by the first person she meets—Yong’s mother. Needless to say, the woman is floored when she finds out that Mi-young is, in fact, the new young lady of the house.

Grandma, however, welcomes her new granddaughter-in-law with vigor, taking her to pay her respects to the family ancestors. I love Mi-young’s dumbfounded expression at the array of the nearly identical-looking portraits trying to greet the right one. Adorable.

It’s also sweet of Grandma Wang to dote upon Mi-young so much already, calling her something like a lucky charm to the family. Even if that fondness turns out to be just because Mi-young is carrying the next heir apparent, it’s still nice to see our heroine being adored by her in-laws. Beaming, Mi-young promises to become a worthy granddaughter-in-law to this family.

Over at the office, Manager Tak barely recognizes his boss when Gun swivels his chair around, looking even more haggard and disheveled than ever. After explaining in a croaking voice that he tied himself up for his own safety, Gun tsks at hearing “that snail” (aka Mi-young) actually moved in.

Then Gun collects himself long enough to entertain the thought of selling the island soap factory, an idea that gets promptly shut down—how disappointed would his new bride be if he went and did that now?

As Mi-young is given a tour of the newlywed quarters, she’s reminded of how Mom had given her a pair of wooden ducks (a customary wedding gift as ducks are known to mate for life) along with the classic “call me if he gives you any trouble” speech. Moved, Mi-young had assured her mother that Gun is a decent man.

Mi-young places the ducks underneath their wedding photo just before Yong and his mother pay her a visit. They cautiously play on Mi-young’s sympathy, asking if it’s okay to address her like family. But when Mi-young addresses her as “Mother,” Gun — who’s looking immaculate again — interjects, “Says who?”

His entrance brings a smile to Mi-young’s face, though it quickly disappears when he gruffly reminds her: “We didn’t get married to become a married couple, but for the baby.” Therefore there’s no need to take care of each other nor will they be sharing a bed. And above all, Grandma Wang mustn’t know about any of this.

Despite being taken aback by his brusqueness, Mi-young agrees. He states that he only has one mother who isn’t Yong’s mother, just like how he only loves one woman in this world: Se-ra.

While Yong and his mother wonder if Gun’s new shotgun marriage is contrived, Mi-young changes into the pajamas gifted to her by Grandma, only to see Gun wearing the other set. Ha, Grandma got them couple PJs?

Annoyed, Gun starts peeling off his clothes, to Mi-young’s shock. Are you… telling him to keep his clothes on?! As Gun get dressed again (boo), she asks where she should sleep tonight. He tells her to sleep in the bed, but she insists on sleeping elsewhere, and he doesn’t fight her about it.

Mi-young gets up in the middle of the night to quietly whip herself up a late-night snack. She barely gets a few bites in before someone else barges into the kitchen—Gun, who’s also having trouble falling asleep. He turns on the light, only for it to turn off seemingly by itself a split-second later.

He’s unaware that it’s Mi-young trying to keep herself hidden, so when it happens a couple more times, he’s understandably spooked; the haunting background music adds to the overall eeriness.

Gun walks over to take his pills, muttering under his breath about “that snail”, completely unaware that Mi-young is lying beneath the table by now. She tries to inch away, but the camera pans to show his foot stepping on her hair. She tries pulling away, gritting through the pain until he finally walks away.

Gun shuffles back to the fridge, but then jumps in alarm when he sees a pair of feet under the table. He’s further spooked when one leg disappears. Then he arms himself with a frying pan, pulls back the chair, and nearly has a heart attack to see Mi-young lying there. Boo!

Gun turns on the light and tells her to come out. She says there’s a logical explanation for this, explaining that her pregnancy hunger pangs keeps her up. She invites him to join her, but he declines, suddenly exhausted again.

Mi-young stops him to tell him to let her know if she makes any more mistakes in the future, since they have to live under the same roof and all. Gun has no intention of interfering with her life, so he asks that she do the same for him. She can do whatever she wants, just so long as she doesn’t irritate him, like an invisible presence in this house.

She clearly looks hurt, but her words comply with his request. That reaction only frustrates him more: “It’d be better if you just got angry with me.”

Yong and his mother bring their suspicions to the Lee clan leader, who pockets another envelope of money from them. This kind of exchange must be a common occurrence, and the clan elder encourages them to find more solid evidence to prove that Gun’s marriage is a sham.

It seems like Gun intends to follow through with that plan to sell off the Yeoul Island soap factory, as he has Manager Tak arrange a meeting with a competitor that also placed a bid. Gun also has another set of documents prepared for Mi-young to pick up at her office. Curiously, her old boss tells her that she can come to him for help for anything in the future.

At the bus stop, Ji-yeon wonders why Mi-young’s husband isn’t here to help pack up her things. Instead of considering it a red flag, Mi-young assures her friend that her new groom is treating her fine.

Mi-young stops to peek into a new business preparing to open up on her way home. She drops her things in shock when a dog suddenly appears, and the owner comes running—whaddayaknow, it’s Daniel.

He’s happy to hear that Mi-young’s baby is fine and that she’s married now. She says it’s all thanks to him, and he supposes that their prayer worked. Daniel picks up the envelope dropped among her things and peeks at the contents: divorce papers. Oh no.

Mi-young hasn’t taken a look at what’s inside herself since they’re for Gun, and Daniel is the next person in this hour to ask if her new husband is treating her well. But just in case he isn’t, Daniel encourages her to speak up for herself and voice her complaints. She thanks him for the encouraging words and declines his help to carry her things, claiming that she lives nearby.

Still feeling uneasy, Daniel catches her to give her his number, saying that she can call anytime. She meekly admits this is the first post-it that wasn’t a request. He invites her to drop by the cafe once it opens, which prompts her to ask what a priest is doing spending time here rather than at church.

Instead of taking that opportunity to clarify his not-a-priest status, Daniel answers that he’s helping someone out. He asks for her name, and is taken aback to hear it’s Kim Mi-young. Does he think it’s just a common name like she does or that there’s more to it? Hmm.

At home, Mi-young walks through a slightly opened door to discover a cozy den inside. She finds the projector still on and watches a home video of Gun and Se-ra spending time together in this very room.

She keeps watching their sweet relationship with a forlorn expression until Gun’s booming voice interrupts her viewing.

Gun asks what she’s doing in someone else’s room. It’s worth noting that he’s been (and still does in this conversation) using choice words to create distance with Mi-young like they’re acquaintances, which I suppose is technically true, but I’d like to think they’ve become pretty familiar in the brief time they’ve known each other.

Still, Gun draws the boundaries in their relationship, informing Mi-young that she needs to keep three things in mind: (1) Never enter this room; (2) They have no obligations to each other since they’re only legally married on paper.

When Mi-young asks about the third, Gun takes off his wedding ring and places it next to the envelope he brought in with him—the same one Mi-young picked up from the office. He tells her to read what’s inside and sign it.

She’s utterly speechless at the divorce papers, as she’s told that it states that their marriage will end soon after their baby’s birth, and that she’ll be compensated handsomely. “Do you agree?” Gun asks.

He repeats the question when she doesn’t respond right away, but now there are tears welling up in Mi-young’s eyes, her hands shaking. She struggles to find the words, and then says in a breaking voice that the reason she got married was to protect their child and her hometown.

Mi-young: “It was the first time this many people needed me… and the first time they blessed me. And I was grateful to you. You showed up and helped me whenever I was going through hard or difficult times… I was grateful because I thought that was sincere. And I felt relieved that you were the baby’s father. So… I truly wanted to follow you and married you.”

Gun isn’t totally unaffected by those words, but he keeps a stoic face as Mi-young signs off on the paperwork. And then she surprises him further when he sees that she’s crossed off the money.

That’s not what she wants, Mi-young asserts. As a tear rolls down her cheek, she states her own condition: that she’ll have this baby and raise it on her own.

Gun is flabbergasted: “Why did I agree to this marriage? Do you know how I went through with this?” Yes, but there were two people who agreed to this marriage, good sir.

A little later, Mi-young swallows back her tears to pick up Mom’s call. Mom is sharp enough to pick up on her daughter’s shaky voice and wonders if something’s wrong, but Mi-young insists that her in-laws treat her like a princess here. Oh, sweetie. I just want to give her a hug.

Her pregnant unni Mi-ja interjects to ask how the whole soap factory deal is going, to which Mi-young says it’ll take some more time. Mom wrenches the phone back to tell her youngest daughter not to worry about a thing, because a happy mommy means a happy baby.

Mi-young insists that she’s happy and says her husband takes good care of her, unaware that Gun is standing nearby, listening. Mom tells her not to bottle it all in, and Mi-young keeps up her smile even though she’s doing her damnedest to hold back her tears.

After hanging up, Mi-young gives herself a tiny pep-talk: “You’re a mom, too, Kim Mi-young. Be strong.”

Gun barely listens to his grandmother’s whisperings that the company isn’t doing well and that Yong’s side of the family is itching for an opportunity to take everything for themselves. It doesn’t help that Gun is giving the cold shoulder to his bride, and Grandma sighs exasperatedly when Gun says he has no romantic feelings towards Mi-young.

The fact of the matter is that they are married, Grandma notes, and there was enough infidelity in this family thanks to his late father. Oh snap. Gun takes offense to that statement: “Don’t compare me to Father.”

Mi-young is feeling just as lost as she cleans the next day, noting that the (possibly PPL) robot vacuum is smarter than her: “At least you know where you’re supposed to go.”

Gun meets with the men who want to buy the soap factory property, and ha, is he imitating a snail with his hand? Although the future plans for the land and the high price they’re willing to pay seems suspicious, Gun signs off on the deal.

He barely has time to entertain second thoughts about it when he receives news that Grandma currently hospitalized. He rushes over to her bedside, where he’s told from the family’s doctor that it’s high stress.

Grandma Wang certainly doesn’t look all that unwell, as it quickly becomes apparent that she’s feigning sickness as a ploy to get the two to attend prenatal education classes that just happen to start today.

“Why? She’s not even showing yet!” Gun cries defensively. But Grandma points out that it’s her great-grandson at stake here, so… he’s going to go, right?

He does, but his lack of interest in participating gets him and Mi-young sent up to the front of the class. When they admit that they haven’t named their baby yet (whereas everyone else already has, apparently) and told to do so, Gun chortles at the idea before he murmurs in agreement.

It’s pretty funny how Gun keeps getting scolded by the teacher for his cheek, like when he asks if any of these activities are useful, and is told that the baby is listening. Mimicking the instructor’s hand gestures, he replies, “I understand.”

Unlike the other soon-to-be fathers, Gun doesn’t go easy on the prenatal massage with Mi-young. But the best part comes when the teacher announces that the fathers will be giving the mothers a breast massage. They both freeze. HA.

They sit there like that, watching the other couples do the exercise until Gun awkwardly gives Mi-young a verbal heads-up. Then Gun puts his hands through her arm and starts massaging the air. They both look sooo uncomfortable in this position, and it’s hilarious.

Unfortunately for them, they get caught by the teacher, who then takes it upon herself to place Gun’s hands directly over Mi-young’s chest. Mi-young jumps away while Gun stares at his hands in horror.

Gun finds Mi-young waiting outside after class, and tells her that he’ll keep up the ruse with Grandma, so there’s no need for Mi-young to attend more classes. “It was fun,” Mi-young admits. “It was really great to do something with the baby and its father.”

She’s sure that their baby would have been happy knowing that it did something with its father. Gun asks how she knows, and Mi-young is even surprised at herself when she replies that she thinks it’s mother’s intuition. Gun cracks a tiny smile.

It’s adorable how Gun gets all worried when Mi-young says her stomach aches, only to get annoyed when she says it’s because she’s hungry. He says he has to get to a meeting, but emphasizes that she make sure to eat, like on her own or whatever. Aw, I knew you couldn’t be mean forever.

He even offers her his card, but Mi-young kindly declines, citing that she can pay for herself. Girl, I know you’re just trying to be nice and all, but when a chaebol gives you his credit card, you take it.

Daniel happens to spot Mi-young eating alone, and he enlists her help to set up his cafe. They adorably laugh and joke around with each other as they paint and furnish the place, and Daniel even helps her puts the glasses in place when she can’t reach.

Later, Daniel snaps a few photos of Mi-young while she sketches a baby onto a mug. She suddenly gets sheepish when she notices the camera, but Daniel encourages her to smile wide.

He takes notice of a wound on her arm and tends to it. Mi-young falls back on her habit of saying sorry, to which Daniel replies that it’s better to say thanks instead of always apologizing. Aw, that’s sweet.

Gun has trouble concentrating during his meeting, especially when a product regarding snails has him wondering out loud, “Has our snail eaten? Our snail should eat.” Awwww, are you worried about Mi-young?

Of course, the other execs mistake this as a question about their product, but Gun pretty much talks to himself as he snaps that he shouldn’t care if “that snail” takes care of herself or not.

Back at the cafe, Daniel compliments Mi-young’s drawing, though he notes that it’d be better if the baby was surrounded by its parents. He offers to draw them in, but Mi-young says no: “What’s the point when they can’t be together anyway?”

Mi-young catches her own words and apologizes again, but Daniel just calls her out on her apologetic habit again. Unable to suppress it any longer, Daniel admits that he saw the divorce papers and he asks if Mi-young’s husband really is an awful person to be asking for a divorce not long after getting married.

But when Mi-young rises to her husband’s defense, saying that there’s a good reason, Daniel bursts, “Where in the world would you find a reason like that?”

Mi-young tells Daniel not to get upset; she was initially shocked too, but she understands where her husband was coming from since he had to give up the woman he loves in order to marry her instead.

Daniel asks about the baby then, and Mi-young says she wants to raise the baby, but worries that she won’t be a very good mother. Furthermore, she’s a little scared. Daniel says there’s no need to be, and assures her that he is a good judge of character.

Mi-young says that Daniel knows all her secrets now, and that makes her feel oddly comfortable around him. “Maybe because you’re a priest…” Daniel returns that he feels like he gained a cute little sister. Oh, do you actually think that she might be your little sister?

Daniel insists on walking her home that evening despite her protests that she’ll be fine. He’s surprised when they stop outside Lee Manor, and he barely gets the words out about Mi-young’s in-laws when a car drives up to the gate and Gun climbs out.

COMMENTS

Huh, I just realized that despite Daniel’s friendship with Grandma Wang, we’ve yet to see Gun and Daniel cross paths in this show, let alone interact with one another. That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Daniel went ahead and assumed that Gun was an asshole, given the sparse evidence he’s gathered on Gun and the circumstances under which he runs into Mi-young on occasion. To him, Gun is the guy who got Mi-young pregnant, may have sent her to almost have an abortion, married her, and now wants a divorce. Yeah okay, if that’s all I knew, I’d want to punch the guy, too.

In that sense, Daniel is quickly becoming the kind of oppa that any girl wishes she could have in her life. He’s protective, kind, and unafraid to call you out when you’re being too hard on yourself. In Mi-young’s case, he was her cheerleader and encouragement even in their earlier encounters, and their acquaintance got a lot more complicated now that Daniel knows her name. I honestly don’t know if he wonders if this Mi-young could be his sister Mi-young, but until we get more information, I’m leaving it as an inkling on his part. More importantly though, I don’t think Daniel would change his behavior towards Mi-young at all even if she didn’t share the same name, because who wouldn’t sympathize with the kind lady who sees the best in all people?

I know I say it over and over again, but Mi-young’s kindheartedness is her best quality. So it breaks my heart when I see hers getting stomped by other people. Just because she tries to be agreeable with Gun and her in-laws doesn’t mean it was an easy decision for her to enter this marriage. Hearing her speak of why she chose to marry Gun was simply lovely, because Mi-young finally felt that her life was significant in relation to those around her, that people actually depended on her instead of being thrown away after fulfilling their wishes. It was hard to watch her hope that this marriage with Gun wouldn’t be half-bad, only to get the cold shoulder for reasons unknown on her part. Then she had to go ahead and pretend like married life was treating her fine, because now she has another life to protect that’s growing inside of her.

We know that Gun got the wrong idea about Mi-young in the previous episode, and while it gave us some hilarious moments that made me seriously worry about the state of his mental health, it also allowed him to hear and see a glimpse of Mi-young’s genuineness. It made me uneasy that Gun could be so cold so quickly towards Mi-young, but there’s also a complexity to his character and emotions (expertly teased by Jang Hyuk). He’s moved by sincerity, and in those moments, we see the cracks in that stony exterior that reminds us of his warmheartedness.

I did find it interesting that Gun used language to emphasize the distance in his relationship with Mi-young, choosing pronouns one would use towards a stranger or mere acquaintance. It’s these kinds of moments that I feel don’t always translate over, but speaks volumes about where two people are in relation to one another. But what I love most in this hour is how Gun starts off by cursing his irrational fear of “that snail” and eventually worries over “our snail” that’s slowly crawling into his heart.

Still wonder how Daniel can ask pregnant women to help setting the store up. Which i think very dangerous.

Anyway, agree with gummy that even though gun try to hate mi-young because of the misunderstanding, he failed. She's to nice of a person that makes it impossible for him to hate her and ended up caring for her.

Grandma is so cute LOL. Love the scene when mi young was introduced to Gun late father, but getting confused on which one coz they all had the same face LOL

Totally with you on the pregnancy and all the store prep reservations. Worse, I'd thought he was going to rope her in to paint.

And bit where she tripped, falling hard on her butt too.

Not in agreement with y'all about 'working during pregnancy'....

Helping to set up shop/putting dishes on shelf/moving light chairs is actually healthy for both Mom and Baby. And I'm sure because Daniel is sooo kewl, that he was using Low/VOC paint which is not harmful at all to humans. Plus, we have all heard and know of someone who worked in the rice fields up until the day of birth. So, this misconception of pampering the mom during early pregnancy is producing fat (and sometimes) unhealthy babies. Research proves this.

Pregnant women fall . . . a lot. Of course, more towards the end of their pregnancy but for someone as petite as MY, falling towards the end of her 1st trimester is understandable.

I like that Daniel is encouraging her and involving her with things that keep her positive. That's his role.

Agreed - in fact NOT working and getting some exercise is probably worse - much worse in fact.

I really wish shows (including a lot of American shows) would be a bit more realistic about it - I think we have all seen a hundred times the old trope of when the hubby finds out the girl is pregnant all of a sudden he thinks she should not do anything but perhaps watch TV and munch on Fritos.

yep and point to note: he didn't let her carry the patio table. Also, totally already in love with Choi Jun Hyuk (second lead syndrome here I come again) Someone please give Papa Gumiho some lovee; Maybe Se Ra once you know Gun obviously falls in love with MY. Unless...Se Ra is the sister?! just a random thought. I don't know if MY can be the sister because she was obviously born and raised at the island and we haven't gotten any background on Se Ra yet...plus that airplane scene in the first epi was hilarious they could share such a fin brother-sister rapport. Just a random hunch.

Maybe I was looking at my dinner, at that time and forgot the details --- but wasn't she perched up a ladder or something while he was arranging the letters of the signboard?

That was the ?! factor + pregnancy.

Otherwise, totally agree that doing manual labour is ok and healthy during pregnancy and helpful .... but no to painting or smelling/touching weird stuff which can come insidiously from drywall, cleaners, chemicals and so forth.
Brand new places and carpets often have some kind of gritty feel, I doubt any of that is good either.

jusash: perhaps she was on ladder--which would be (imo) ridiculous, right? i don't remember seeing her on a ladder, but then, i miss stuff cuz i have to read subtitles and the viki.com.commenters.

we're on the same page about pregnant women+exercise=healthy Mom and Baby :)

Not a ladder, they were stairs. I was suprised too, so I paid close attention where she was standing. She was just directing/guiding Daniel who was arranging the sign on the stairs outside.

thought the SAME thing.. pain fumes = SOO bad for pregnant woman :P but again.. it IS a drama :P

While that might have been true 20 or 30 years ago, nearly all household paint except some industrial stuff now is water based, and has little if any fumes.

Preggers women are encouraged to keep working and keep moving as much as they can.

My wife worked until like a few days before she gave birth to our first, and worked for like 8 months prior to giving birth to our twins.

Some women in our office went right up to the day before.

It's fine.

She is only a few weeks pregnant, and it is not like women have to stop all physical activity. One of my nieces is a nurse, and she worked up until her 8th month in the hospital, though she was on desk duty after the 7th.

I don't think asking her to participate in setting up the store was a bad thing. Women in agrarian communities do physical farm work well into their pregnancies. And she didn't do anything more demanding than the common housework that most moms do.

The first months of pregnancy are actually tiring. If you're lucky not to have nausea, you need to rest a lot because of the sudden change in your body.

She is so lucky she hasn't been throwing up, super tired and obviously queasy in her first trimester. Drama pregnancies are much better than the real ones I had.

And he could have helped her carry her box of office stuff too...^^ ah men!!! One of my friends is pregnant right now and she's told me that she's exhausted and out of breath after carrying little things or doing housework like cleaning windows because she has to lift her arms and that's very tiring for her!!! And she sleeps a lot!!^^
anyway, that was a good episode!!! For the first time, I really enjoyed watching this show!

I think we've all just been conditioned to believe that a woman who overexerts herself so early in the pregnancy can lead to a miscarriage. This maybe somewhat true but we've become overly cautious when those situations arise.

Dude....NOT COOL.

Let's all just try to think of this version and the Taiwanese version as being completely separate and refrain from comparing them, mmkay? This is not the first time someone has spoiled this show for me by talking about both versions, but I certainly hope it's the last. At least on Dramabeans.

This is my happy place. Don't fuck up my happy place.

I never mind spoilers for myself, but they make me angry for other people that would rather not know anything. I think we are going to have to keep reminding people to stop the comparisons.

Also, if you watch on Viki and you haven't seen this episode turn off the comments when you do, because some people have been posting spoilers in the comments. I love Viki because of the comments, but last night as I watched this episode there were spoilers and some people (understandably) posted angry responses.

Yes...I love Min Young and her kindheartedness....it was heartbreaking to see her suffer when she was so hopeful about this marriage...and it was great to see Gun overhearing her conversation as he could realise her genuineness...even if he doesn't admit it.

I set the bar high with my expectations on this drama and so far it is exceeding them. Love that the cast can have me laughing one moment and then in tears the next.

Looking forward to some great grovel scenes in the future. Gun is going to have to deliver after everything he's been up to.

I love the way these actors work together making the total even greater than the sum of the parts. Every change the Korean version has made from the Taiwanese version has been for the better, creating more realistic and sympathetic characters and situations. Loved Mi-young's conversation with her mother.

She's always so sorry whenever she needs something. Poor thing.

Kudos to the actors. Even though it was sad, they still made the scene fun.

My new crack.

I had nil expectations for this drama because the Taiwanese version really put me off, but I love what this version has managed to do with the original story.

The best part for me is the funny. This show executes funny so well! I seldom laugh aloud watching dramas, but that pseudo-horror scene in the kitchen was too awesome!

I have been having somewhat of a falling out with k-dramas lately - so many of the recent ones just seem blah and full of recycled clichés.

But this one I am loving, and one of the few remakes of any show that is better than the original.

Finally I can get behind the slapstick elements of this show. They are seriously hilarious and every funny scene has me in fits of laughter...
Is it just me, or are they not typical for Kdrama? Is so, they should adopt this kind of humour more, because it is GREAT!

Still adoring this show! It's seriously so funny. That midnight munchies horror sequence was ridiculous and awesome.

I'll admit it was hard watching the relationship between Gun and Mi-young this episode, if only considering how lovely and full of trust it was the two episodes before so I hope he gets over this misunderstanding soon and starts stepping up and acting like a father/husband. He already showed signs this ep and luckily I still adore him for being awesome last week. He just needs to open his eyes and realize that Mi-young is a sweetheart who did NOT force him to marry her!

Anyway, still loving them both and can't wait for the next ep :)

I am not defending LG, but here's a defense of LG:

Yes, there is a misunderstanding, but it is unlikely to be reason for LG's hostility and coldness.

Look at it from LG's perspective.

What did he do wrong?

1. He was a devoted lover to Sera. He wanted to marry her. He set up a whole thing in Macau to do that. It failed because Sera ditched him. Sera is not necessarily at fault, but neither is LG.

2. He was drugged and while in his own room, an unknown person came in and slept with him. KMY is also not at fault, but he cannot be sure of that. What he is sure of, however, is that he was not at fault.

3. He took pity on the girl and turned her into a princess for the evening. He kept protecting her even back in Korea, and made sure that lawyer Min was destroyed so that KMY could protect her dignity and her job.

4. He took responsibility for the unborn that he did not intend to have, he took responsibility for the woman he did not know, and he consciously destroyed his own possible future with Sera, by marrying someone else to protect the child from a bastard birth.

What did he do wrong, and why is he deserving of such a fate?

He does not know KMY, does not care to know KMY, and wants to get his life back. But that is practically impossible now.

Should he just give up everything and say, "fine, now I will be a father and a husband? Shucks, but there's nothing I can do."

It is hard enough to live one's life for your spouse and kids when you absolutely wanted to have that spouse and those kids. But how hard is it to live one's life for a spouse you didn't want, and a child you didn't intend to have?

And, LG cannot just call up Sera now and say, "OMG, Sera, a totally funny thing happened to me last week. You will SO laugh out loud when you hear..."

I totally LURVE JNR (as ppl may remember), and KMY fits into my heart like a key to a lock, but LG is the one to be pitied.

KMY will undoubtedly be a kick-ass mom. Just look at her example - doesn't KMY have a totally kick-ass mom of her own? And in fact, won't that child have a loving doting (and super rich) great-grandmother as well?

Right now, the one to commiserate with is LG.

Great post. I absolutely agree with you but my heart is mainly bleeding for Mi-young right now. That's why it seems so hard to consider Gun's point of view, even though he's perfectly in his right to be angry, hurt and to communicate those feelings of intense betrayal.

Plus, I get the feeling the show is framing his current emotions deliberately as erratic and over the top which may hinder some viewers to actively try and empathize with his character. That's just a guess, though.

Totally agree.

The thing about LG is, he doesn't have anyone to talk to, to share his feelings - about how his whole life is destroyed, about how hurt he is, about how he feels. Except:

The one he can do that with is Sera, but he can't.

The one he possibly could do that with is KMY, but he shouldn't.

On the other hand, at least KMY has that Father Daniel guy, right?

samsooki: HELLO????

you asked: what did LG do wrong?

well, for starters, on the eve of his proposal to his ONLY LOVE, he impregnated whatever crawled into his bed.

now we can argue that he was doped, but honestly, the drug was NOT a stimulant, ergo, he had to be somewhat conscious to (a) get aroused enough to get 'it' up and then (b) get 'it' on in order to (c) get 'it' off--you know what i'm saying.

why is everyone sympathetic to LG's plight? being a jerk to MY because of his mistake is not kewl.

but i'm really loving how MY is responding to his 'jerk-ness'. she's not falling into the traditional Korean Femme Victim. I'm finding that very refreshing--realistic and to be honest--educational. She is a rock star!

He thought the person who crawled into bed was Sera...

And understand also though, the whole setup is the basis for everything that happens thereafter. It is the plot point (however unrealistic) that kicks the inexorable events to follow.

(but yeah, he probably should have identified the oven who was in bed with him before putting the creme filling in the dough. Now there is a bun in the oven, and there's nothing to do but let it bake.)

well, not really sympathizing him here, just thinking from his perspective. for normal people (me included), first reaction will be to victimize himself. "hey, i'm the victim and it justifies what i'm going to do". and in dramaland, this gets played up REAL big (well there it will give you the drama). imo, so long as this "jerk-ness" don't continue for long, i'm fine with it.

having said that, KMY is an EXTRAORDINARY person, so strong and so pure. loving her! ^^

Your comment sounds very much like victim blaming.

First, that drug is supposed to be stimulant. Did you watch the previous episode where the islanders gave the present to him?

Second, he's in his own freaking room. Of course it is understandable in his under-drug mind that the person who came into his room is his girlfriend because realistically speaking, do you expect a total stranger who doesnt have the key to come to your hotel room and go straight to your bed?

Third, a person can be aroused and get it on under the effects of the drug/substance without having consciousness over what is happening.

People should sympathize with LG in this case because he's the victim in this situation. He was drugged and had his room intruded by a stranger. I'm not blaming MY because she's also a victim too but those islanders need to be punished for their crime.

I don't think you understand how drugs work. There are many different kinds of drugs with many different purposes. Some Do inhibit your sexual performance, but there are also drugs designed Specifically for upping your sex drive.

The drug they gave to Lee Gun Was a stimulant. It was designed Specifically to get him drunk enough that he wouldn't realize what he was doing And stimulated enough that he would have sex with the 'hooker' they had planned to send to his room.

None of that is Lee Gun's fault. By all means, blame him for his jerkiness later on, but let's not go blaming the poor guy for something he had no control over.

I do agree with you that it's good to see Mi Young standing up for herself and not just taking his crap lying down though. She's doing what she can to make a bad situation better while still maintaining her dignity, and I'm really glad the writers are having her character do that. She was faaaaar more passive in the original version.

OhSoEnthusiastic:

I think you're right. The island boys said it was a stimulant, however, the way both LG and MY were acting . . . by literally falling drunk into bed was not stimulating. Alcohol is a depressant...so I was confused by what island boys said and the contrast of the couples behavior.

So yeah, show has me a bit confused about the "wonder drug"

Thanks for your comment.

Yeah, I loved the way the heroine reacts to the divorce contract and to the baby: I'm really glad she stood her ground and said "I want to raise the baby"! I love the original version but let's face it, the heroine is too kind-hearted and too passive! if that was the only annoying thing with her, that would be OK but she readily complies with what the hero wants (ie the baby will be raised by the hero and his family) and doesn't argue at all! She's way too submissive and even sadomasochist because he's really harsh with her at times and totally unfair (she's not at fault!!) she's even more a victim than in the Korean version because HE is the one who goes to the wrong room and sleeps in her bed!! Man, I would be so upset for being so mean to me!!!(- So yes, the Taiwanese heroine is very unrealistic, the Korean one is much less submissive and I cheered for her when she said "I want to raise the baby".

0

Awe, I understand what you mean. Someone in another comment suggested a better word then drunk would be intoxicated, and I think I agree. Drugs can be stimulating while also intoxicating, and I just assumed it was a drug like that.

0

He thought the person in bed *was* Se Ra, and why wouldn't he?

The premise of the show is that the drug *is* some kind of stimulant.

Right now, he doesn't believe it was an accident that MY crawled into his bed- he thinks she was a deliberate part of the old honeytrap con.

Here's the thing. No one forced Gun to marry Mi Young. Grandma is the only one who was pushing for it and Mi Young herself didn't have any intention of marrying her. She specifically said that she didn't want to interfere with the relationship. He's the one who made the choice between starting with Se Ra and being there for his child. So that's why he doesn't get to turn around and be a D-bag because he's feeling trapped.

Also, i think he knows in his heart that she's not behind the plot. If he really thought that she did it on purpose he would just say "you tricked me so we're getting divorced." But instead, he's purposely saying hurtful things to push her away, indicating that his problem is himself and not her.

This is what I was afraid of at the end of episode 4. This whole situation could be solved by having one five minute conversation, which makes this a really dumb conflict. I hope everything gets cleared up by next week so the real fun can begin.

I don't think either one is to blame, and I can fully understand why he might feel like he got coerced into something that was totally not his fault.

But it was not her fault either - he is taking it out on her, and she was not the one that caused the mess. If anything he should be suing the ones that caused all this with their "herbal Viagra" laced drinks. :P

The thing is I do totally agree with you and I'm actually not even pissed AT HIM (because I love him lol), it's simply just a bit painful to watch. He really surprised me last week with his ability to let go of his future for the sake of his child, a child he literally made through no fault of his own. And I'm still so impressed with him doing that so no matter what he does in the next few episodes, I am with him because he's already shown me that he can really step up.

That said, his life plans are NOT more important than Mi-young's just because he had a future spouse set for himself and she didn't. And he most certainly does NOT deserve more pity than she does, nor is he the one to be commiserated with over her. She gave up just as much as he did when she chose to marry him.

She made it clear that she didn't want to marry someone who was in love with someone else. He was the one who suggested that they get married for their child and I still fully love him for doing that. But now, he's gone back on those words and is, essentially, making her into an early divorcee.

This child or marriage wasn't her first choice either, and, because of it, she might not get to even experience a conventional courtship where she falls in love and then gets married etc., so I guess I just don't agree with the idea that "the one to commiserate with is LG" if only because I think that they BOTH are the ones to commiserate with, with neither of them coming before the other because their sacrifices are equal.

That said, I adore them both and feel for them both and I think it's only natural that it takes him a little more time to learn not to resent her because I do understand that having a plan for your future and then having it suddenly taken away is unbelievably hard and it understandably takes a little more time to accept and let go of. I'm totally willing to wait for him to do this because he's awesome and she's awesome and they're both awesome.

John,

Nice comment! I thought that was the most poignant part of the whole episode.

KMY's dignity just tears right through the LG defenses. You cannot look down upon a person who has dignity. It is impossible. It is like trying to look down at a mountain when you are in the valley.

Fake Father Daniel is unlikely to be related to KMY, unless KMY was adopted....

good points made about dignity, everyone.

but I would like to include a shout out to KMY's realistic view of the 'relationship'. She repeatedly verbalizes to LG that she knows it's not love--she knows that he loves someone else.

i think this is why she doesn't get caught up in his anger or in the sadness of the fact that it is a loveless relationship between KMY and LG. i said earlier, that her attitude and realistic approach is enlightening. she's not playing the girl card or the victim.

LOVE IT! maybe that's why the ratings are down...peeps wanna see the damsel in distress version? i dunno.

But I don't really see the difference with other kdrama heroines...
I mean she accepts every harsh comment without arguing back. She could have a rational talk with him, even without getting angry. For example pointing out that he stopped the abortion she was ready to have for his and Sera's sake, and that he agreed to marry her and wasn't forced to.
Instead she keeps a dignified silence - much like every wronged kdrama heroine ever - which allows the misunderstanding to continue.
Refusing the money is also a characteristic trait of every kdrama heroine. Whereas it would make a lot of sense to accept it, but no - accepting money would make the heroine less pure per kdrama rules...

0

Required fields are marked *

I don't think accepting the money or not has anything to do with being pure or not. At least not in this case. I actually think she really wants to stay independant. She doesn't want the money for herself. It's obvious she expects him to fulfill his role as a father, so when it comes to the baby I'm sure she will let him provide his share (even when divorced). It's not like she lives a poor live; she lives a humble live, and she does accept most of the things she has now that she's married to him. Although living in a house like this must be a big change to her, she doesn't hide in a corner. She seems to feel pretty at home actually.

He stopped the abortion because he thought it was wrong, and she knows he wants to have the baby as much as she does. At that point they didn't think about marrying each other. I don't think there's a point in bringing that up, but if I'm missing something, please elaborate;)

I do agree that she could have told him they agreed to the marriage, even though they were aware of the fact that he loved Sera. But I guess she didn't say that, because she's quite an empathic girl..

And having seen the next episode I think she handled it in the best way possible, given the situation. Just let the guy figure it out on his own, it's so much fun seeing him appreciate her more and more, without her having to do anything for it;)

I thought the opposite about Ethan Ruan's character -- to me he was a tremendous jerk, and even when he was trying to be nice, he just came off as immature and self-centred. The more the series went on, the more I couldn't stand him. So far, Jang Hyuk is a tremendous improvement to me.

(Not picking an argument, because I realize that no two people will see and like a drama the same way!)

(Just a heads up - this comment will compare the two dramas but is completely spoiler free!)

I definitely agree with you when it comes to how self-centered and immature Ruan's character was buuut at the same time there was something really captivating about how realistic he was. Most of the time (except the very beginning) he had good intentions - just executed them in all the wrong ways. There were so many times where i became so emotionally invested that I felt like the Grandma - I wanted to slap him in the head when he hurt XunYi even though it was out of malice, wanted to slap him again when he couldn't bring himself to admit that he loved XunYi, and then root for him as he tried to earn back the trust of XunYi.

On the other hand, I think Gun is at times too perfect for me and then too ridiculous. Makes him seem unrealistic at times and really hard to relate to.

That being said, it's clear that Gun's character is much more developed. He has this really interesting back story with the step-mother/concubine that mirrors what his situation could become like in the future. As witnessed by his remark to his Grandma, it seems like he has a lot of pent up anger towards his parents and it'll be interesting to explore that. If I remember correctly, this was not part of the Taiwanese drama so I really hope they explore this thread of his father cheating on his mother rather than just using the stepmother and the son as plot tools.

Additionally, Gun really is a gentleman - and I love that about him. While my first instinct is to protect MiYoung and root for her - you have to remember that Gun is just as much a victim in this situation as MiYoung is - if not more? Just look at his face when he hears Sera's voicemail as she's headed back for ballet. The way his face breaks - words can't describe it - just superb acting on behalf of JangHyuk. And then when he calls her before he gets married... (Maybe it was the difference in the quality of acting but I never really got the sense from CunXi that Anna (Sera) was his true one and only love.

So now looking back at this post, I just talked myself in a circle. Oh well. That's what good dramas do to you. Gah. It feels good to be sucked back into dramaland after a pretty dry season

I heartily agree with your post. Jang Hyuk is a HUGE improvement over ER's selfish, immature character. LG is zany and over the top at times, but nuanced with an unexpected depth too. I love him even though I had fully expected to hate him in this drama.

The problem with Ethan Ruan's character is that he was actually torn between what he feels for Anna and what he's starting to feel for Xin Yi! But I admit that he was really nasty to Xin Yi sometimes!! I agree, he was very selfish, immature and very bossy!! the fact that Xin Yi didn't fight back most of the time in the first part of the drama didn't help him change for the better...
On that respect, the Korean characters are an improvement, especially Jang Hyuk's character! He's a bit harsh to her but his angry & cold attitude doesn't last long..I think he's more human, he feels a bit "trapped" by this marriage but he doesn't stay angry for long, especially when she keeps mentioning the baby. It reminds him that he married her because he wanted to be a good father for the baby. So when she says that the baby must have felt happy that he came with her to the prenatal class, it leads him back to the "right track" by trying to be a good father.

I disagree. In this drama he is a bit mean to her, but in the original Ethan was just downright jerkish and cruel. Kind of like in this one the "mean" is skin deep, in the Taiwan version the "mean" went all the way to the bone.

In the original even after the end when things got all nice again, I never quite forgave him for how he had acted to her.

His performance here just reminds me of his other Jang Na-ra pairing Success Story of a BG, which most raved about. I am ok with it but will probably not place it in the top 5 dramas category of that viewing era.

Thankfully he's toned it down since ep 1 .... but still the same brand of over acting for the obnoxiousness factor, but OTT which is kind of a turn off because I can't feel for his character at all - not even when he's sensitive, and hurting.

Jang Nara is exactly the actress writer had in mine while writing this character. The second male lead role in this particular show is very rewarding for Choi Jin Hyuk - better than the leading one. Jang Hyuk is doing his best, but it's just not the character he should play. Period. Wrong choice. I feel so sorry for him - he is doing his best, and I loved him in other, more tragic roles; but at this time, I'm considering not watching for a while coz he acts grotesque, makes me cringe.
Oh, and what's wrong with shows' official brief descriptions lately?! So misleading. "Drunken one-night stand"? Think back to the first episode. Neither of them was "drunk" that night. The same with Joseon Gunman - his sister is alive.

I know of a few purported sexual stimulants that incorporate alcohol in the recipe, so they may well have been drunk as well as, ahem, excited. Even if alcohol wasnt involved, the aphrodisiac drinks definitely had some intoxicating properties -- neither party was in full possession of their faculties, what with the staggering around and the passing out. Maybe a better translation for "drunken" might have been "intoxicated", which doesn't necessarily have to involve alcohol.

Thank you, gummimochi, for this recap and mentioning Gun's use of speech as an indicator for his hurt feelings and current inner distance towards Mi-young. As someone relying on captions, I wasn't aware of this and knowing so now gives me more insight into the nuances of a great drama.

Mi-young (well, really, Jang Na-ra's acting) killed me over and over during this episode. While Gun was not as absurdly nasty as some other male leads I have seen (at least not directly to her face), I still hope he will feel very, very bad about it later and moreover get his bum whooped by both Mom and Grandmom during the course of this show. Or he'll just end up as a snail in his next life, serves him right. Anyway, shame on him for not recognizing someone as good-natured, charming, and sweet like Mi-young as the person that she is. I mean, everything about her demeanor tells you what you need to know: She is polite, accommodating, modest. She just wants to feel safe! How can you look at her, a grown man with a -- presumably -- beating heart and not have said heart break a little when she tells you that she only expected you to be sincere? Oh god, I cried like a child.

I don't know how I feel about Daniel, to be honest. He seems to be a nice guy and I greatly appreciate how he's comforting Mi-young in this difficult time... but there is just something dubious about her stumbling into situations in which she's either actively lied to or not in control (due to asymmetrical power relations, distribution of knowledge or dubious schemes). She deserves so much better. Casting this thought aside, I still think both have nice chemistry and a genuine lightheartedness that's currently missing between Gun and Mi-young. Here's hoping he'll soon tell her the truth and their relationship can grow without unnecessary walls between them.

By the way, is it just me or does Granny possess superpowers? One, she's The Queen of Faking, two, she -- even though they explicitly decided to keep it from her -- knows that Mi-young slept on the sofa! They might have teased us with Gun!Batman in that lovely Gun/Sera video sequence, but you won't fool me, show! I see right through you.

I agree with the whole Daniel situation. I understand if he didn't tell her the whole truth - in regards to how rich and famous he really is (I mean this guy shares the same last name as Brad Pitt with no shame! lol) - but he's intentionally letting her continue thinking he is a priest. So everything she tells him, she thinks she's telling him in confession. Yikes! That really raises lots of moral issues with me. Hopefully when she finds out, she doesn't just forgive him but actually expresses her anger and feelings of betrayal. But knowing MiYoung...

Yes, exactly. I'm already slightly uncomfortable with the dubcon premise of the show as it is, so I want at least the nice guys to treat her well. :(

I had to grin during one of Daniel's scenes, though, because he seemed to wear a ring with a skull on it and I was asking myself: Which priest would do that? (At least none of those I've seen.)

This has to be my first time loving Park Won-sook or Chairman Wang's character! She always plays such mean or over the top characters that it was always so difficult to sympathize with her. But I'm loving the way she is portraying her character.. especially all the meddling! keke.

I've really been enjoying this drama so far. It's been so nice to have a rom-com that really feels like one. And Jang Nara plays her character so well that you just feel for miyoung :) Looking forward to seeing how this story unfolds (and no, I haven't seen the Taiwanese version so I'm really going in blind!)

I have to say, I wish Daniel is the traditional 2nd lead.... someone who'd sort of unwittingly fall in love with Miyoung cos she's going to be like a free bird in 10 months (gunnie... it's safe to say 8ish months :P

I love this drama because there is so much excitement in the anticipation. For most dramas, it's impossible to understand why the main heroine would fall for the main lead. Therefore the episodes leading up to when they actually fall for one another is painstakingly excruciating with the audience having to withstand the main lead sometimes physically but most often always emotionally abusing the heroine causing us to curse our screens and beg the drama gods to make the transition to their lovey dovey moments quickly.

However here Gun and Miyoung are such sweet, genuinely good people. Even at his worst, Gun treats Miyoung with the respect that all humans deserve - unfortunately common decency lost on most drama leads. To me it's was so crucial that he never once overstepped that boundary in this episode because even if he did I would have understood him (though that doesn't give him the right to!). From his perspective, he was basically raped and then blackmailed into marriage. (I know some of you may be rolling your eyes and saying really rape but imagine if the role were reserved and it was Miyoung who was drugged with the intent of setting her up in a compromising situation for a better business deal - that would have us all jumping from our seats yelling rape!). Still other than his harsh words - which I admit was indeed pretty cutting but would like to point out their purpose was to create distance not to degrade - he still offered Miyoung his bed and didn't physically force her to sign the divorce papers when she didn't want to. That's why instead of anger and me yelling at the screen for Miyoung to get herself out of this toxic relationship, I'm truly rejoicing at the scenes where Gun slowly realizes that Miyoung's kindness is not a facade and actually the real deal.

Its going to be a hard and long process for Gun to forget about Sarah completely and realize that Miyoung is his true love - one that probably requires him to go all the way with Sarah and lose Miyoung temporarily in the process - but all in all, I'll be rooting for them because they truly deserve one another.

All that being said, I must admit that there were a couple of tears in my eyes this episode - pregnancy should be one of the most happiest times of a girl's life where she is doted upon by her family and husband. To see Miyoung struggle through that all on her own makes me tear up a bit.

yeah, he has every right to be angry - he's been forced into a one-night stand with a stranger, then forced to give up the love of his life forever because of the pregnancy, and none of it is anything he wants. And then on top of that, Mi-young turns out to be the sister in law of the man who drugged him....hard not to have a misunderstanding really.

I watched this episode at 2 in the morning. NOT A GOOD IDEA. I was trying so hard to not laugh. I had very little expectation from this drama because I didn't want to be disappointed but this drama is exceeding my expectations.

Even though I've seen Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara in other dramas/ movies before, I'm still amazed at how amazing they are.

I hope the drama keeps at this rate until the end.

Gummi, actually I don't really care about the ratings. I do enjoyed the show and it still could do it better, much better.

Yeah.. Jang & Jang are jjang!!!!
We could see their chemistry and they did a great job here. Proud of them...
I can't wait for the next episode (in few hours later). I am so excited!!!!!

Its only me or Choi jin-hyuk was sooo hot in today's episode??? Remind me of his gumiho appa character, gentle yet hot...

And I'm trying to not sneak peak on your spoiler *trying so hard*

Thank you gummimochi for another great recap ^^

I LOVE Mi-young's character so much; doesn't just take his money for lunch and said she's got her OWN money for her OWN food!

She's is such a kind hearted, considerate, strong, and open minded female that is so rare in K-dramaland. She feels REAL and totally relate-able.

Gun may be the strangest male lead yet but he isn't totally cold and a jerk; he's rational (most of the time) and still behaves like a human! I like how he offered her his bed and doesn't treat her like trash even of the misunderstanding he has of her.

Can someone help me out here and tell me if we see any more snails onscreen?

I'm a bit phobic myself (gagged during Monstar/had to turn away last ep when Gun began going on about them, I totally feel him!) and I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a heads up so I can decide whether to avoid this episode or not. I'd rather not avoid since I love everything else about this show but phobia....

(sorry if I come across as some whiny princess)

Gun is adorable although he's really mean to MY this episode. And Choi Jin Hyuk, who continue to be supportive second lead is awesome too.
Too bad, CJH might not get any girl at all.

Fated to love this drama!! FTLY Jjang!

Ahhhh, we’ve hit the ‘Lee Gun behaves like a jerkbutt’ part of the drama. For those who haven’t seen the original and might be starting to hate Lee Gun already, let me just say this: He is ten times nicer then Ji Cun Xi was. (I’M SO ECSTATIC AND OVER THE MOON ABOUT THIS!!!!) He is still a jerkbutt, but he’s a much nicer jerkbutt. And if I can put up with Ji Cun Xi, I can most definitely handle Lee Gun, lol.

Lee Gun’s secretary is also a much better character here. In the original, he was a total tool and was always encouraging Cun Xi to treat Xin Yi like crap. He’s so much nicer in this version, and I’m grateful for that. (I’m just grateful that she actually has a Number of people on her side this time, instead of only two in the original.)

But LMAO at Mi Young trying to hide from Lee Gun in the kitchen. I just don’t even understand why she was acting all worried because she got ‘caught’ eating in the kitchen late at night. She’s pregnant! Pregnant women eat! A LOT! I mean, it was hilarious to watch (I’m certainly not complaining), but it was also just silly.

That being said, I look forward to seeing her do more silly things like that, lol.

Side note: That dog…is a polar bear. Does anyone else find that terrifying?

I've been depressed this week, so it was great to laugh at this episode especially the midnight food raid, the snail references, and the prenatal class. My husband was looking at me strangely when I burst out in laughter.

However, it made me sad when MY watched the video of Gun and Sera SO happy together. MY is a caring person and she finally sees the real person who is her rival for Gun's affections. She thought she was doing the right thing for the baby to have a father. To MY, it was never about the money she could get it she had the baby. But I think she realized she made a mistake and should raise the baby on her own and without delay signed the divorce papers. Then Jerkface can't comprehend why she went though with the marriage. He's got a lot of growing up to do.

JNR just breaks your heart. She is so good in this role!

I'm not going to going to compare the Taiwanese vs Korean storylines, but can I just say how I think the actors in this version is totally rocking it? I was a bit worried when they announced Jang Nara and Jang Hyuk were announced to be taken a leads - Successful Story of a Bright Young Girl was my first Kdrama and it seemed SO long ago. Are they too old to carry a "young-ish" rom com?

Perhaps because Jang Hyuk is a more experienced actor, so his depiction of the main lead is really more engaging. As gummimochi pointed out above, the Lee Gun character is really quite douchey from his action. But Jang Hyuk is totally stealing the show here, and I have so much feels for him. Ethan Ruan (who plays the lead in the Taiwanese version) was just a young 26 yo there - his portrayal is less cute (ie he was an A-class A-hole).

On a side note, I'm so tickled by Choi Jin Hyuk's oppa character. I LOVE Choi Jin Hyuk. The irony would be that he's the total dongsaeng of the bunch, but his chara is totally the most matured.

All in all, this show is shaping up well and i continue to look forward to future episodes. :)

And, just because it was funny, Jang Hyuk was massaging the air! LOLOL.

Hahaha, between him massaging the air and KMY's awkward look on her face, that pre-natal class might have been the funniest thing I've seen in such a long time.

OMG. He was rolling his hands around and caressing (not her boobies but) THE AIR! HAHAHAHA!

Seriously, I was totally shocked, embarrassed and amused at the same time.

3- embarrasment sets in: he's REALLY caressing the...AIR!

4- laugh again...heh...because it isn't me. hehe..

This is the most successful Korean remake of any I've seen. Jang Nara has managed to make an otherwise infuriating pushover so cute and likeable! Jang Hyuk is also great at making his character lie between the cusp of kind and asshole-lery, because he at least has reason to act the way he does. I bear a grudge against the soap factory guys for making Mi Young suffer for their actions :-(

Somehow she managed to make a new breed of doormat, not governed by fear or status like most, but just because she is such a totally nice person.

You have to kind of wonder why nobody around her has never seen that quality before.

Seriously Gun was never mean, he was cold but not mean. He never at any point said anything that was meant to hurt Mi-Young, everything he said was to draw a line as to what they could be. And still he was affected by her sadness and cared for her well-being. Thats says alot of what sort of person he is. The meanness thing he did was sell the factory.

THIS. After episode 4 I was terrified that they would turn Gun into an irredeemable, irrational jerkbutt. But so far so good; he has been cold and distant but never outright cruel or heartless. The writing and the acting both provide enough nuance and depth to show that he has been and IS a much better person than his current behaviour might suggest. I can't and won't defend some of the jerkier stuff he's said/done, because Mi Young deserves none of his shit. But I understand where he's coming from, and I know he's capable of good, and I appreciate that he isn't being played as a flat-out asshole.

and this is the guy who as far as he knows has been conned into marrying this stranger inorder to safe the island factory. I mean think about. He was drugged, woke up in his own bed after having apparently slept with this strange girl(he doesnt even recall doing the naughty with her another man would question whether she was really pregnant and if it was truly his), then he witness that scene between MY and the stupid lawyer which convinces him of her innocences in the whole mess, then he gets blackmailed which forces him to go to the island just as MY was supposedly announcing she was pregnant and then he gets forced into marriage by her family and is guilt tripped into saving the factory...take away tv normality and you have one every good con.

on the other note, who know what's the brand of the phone are they using?

Here' my take on the drama:
I have watched the taiwanese version back then, & though i could barely remember everything, I know that I loved that drama. It' one of my fave Taiwanese dramas
to date together with In Time With You. That's how i love Chen Qiao En. Looking at this remake, I cant help but give a big applause to the actors & actresses esp. Jang Nara. She successfully portrayed the character that I couldn't even tell if she's acting or not. It' jut o natural even the way she talks, her intonation, her facial expressions to her body movements. I really like her & Jang Hyuk. NowI am planning to watch their old drama together.
