You’re All Surrounded: Episode 9

It’s nice to get an episode like this one where the case of the day takes a backseat to our main characters and their personal drama, especially since we only get one installment this week. This drama doesn’t always land on the better half of that balance since I’m not in it for the cop procedural, but when our characters get to confront each other about the big overarching concerns—secret identities and secret crushes—the results are sweetly satisfying.

EPISODE 9: “Special secret”

Dae-gu comes out of the medical examiner’s office after confirming that the man who threatened his mother was found dead… and runs right into Pan-seok who’s arrived minutes after him to do the very same thing.

Pan-seok immediately makes the connection: “You were alive, Kim Ji-yong. You’re Kim Ji-yong, aren’t you?” Dae-gu freezes, and if his presence here wasn’t a giveaway, that flicker in his eyes should be.

But he takes a second to recover and asks who that is. Pan-seok isn’t buying the denial at first, but Dae-gu accuses him of going to the orphanage to do a background check on him, and challenges Pan-seok to just ask if he’s curious about anything.

Pan-seok asks what he’s doing here then, and Dae-gu spots Gook out of the corner of his eye just in time. He pretends to be here for the autopsy report on their case, and Pan-seok’s face falls. Aw, fakeout, really?

He lets it go for now, probably because he’s been known to obsess over Mom’s case and has been wrong before. When Pan-seok heads in to go identify the body, he asks if Eun Dae-gu was here before him, and the examiner says no.

Out in the hallway, Dae-gu’s mind races, and he assures himself that he watched the medical examiners change shifts before he walked out, and can’t be identified. Tae-il joins them, and they ask Dae-gu what he’s doing here. Damn, so running into Gook was pure luck? Talk about skating on thin ice. Dae-gu says he just wanted to see them, and they stand there blinking at him. Gook smiles and says he didn’t know Dae-gu was capable of saying such warm and fuzzy things.

The first thing Gook does when he wakes up the next morning is call Soo-sun to see where she slept last night in the rain. He sees on the video call that she isn’t in her tent, and she groggily remembers that she slept at Pan-seok’s place. She jolts up and lies that she’s at a friend’s house.

The air is still cold between Tae-il and Gook, and this time it’s Tae-il who does the ignoring as they cross paths in the kitchen. Will you two just make up already?

Soo-sun takes a minute to marvel at Pan-seok’s desk littered with candy wrappers, and picks up the adorable picture of his son. She carefully puts it back and scurries out.

Dae-gu waits in a café that morning, and Chief Kang arrives to meet him in person. In a flashback we see that she was a mystery benefactor who sent Dae-gu books and gifts at the orphanage throughout his adolescence, and sponsored his education.

He writes cards to thank her every time, and little Ji-yong turns into big Dae-gu. In his last card he writes that he’s been accepted into law school and will be leaving the orphanage.

He waves goodbye to the other kids and sets off on his own, and then Chief Kang finds him at the university and greets him with the box of cards he’s sent her over the years. This would be a really heartwarming story if I didn’t suspect she was evil and sought you out to use you as her revenge puppet, but the moment itself is very sweet.

In the present, Dae-gu tells her that he thinks Pan-seok is onto him. She’s surprised that it’s sooner than they anticipated, and then she asks if Dae-gu is really sure that Pan-seok is the bad guy here. She says she put Dae-gu on his team because he was so insistent about it, but she’s watched Pan-seok over the years and doesn’t know if he’s really the dirty cop that Dae-gu thinks he is. Hm, are you maybe NOT the evil puppetmaster?

Dae-gu flares up at that and reminds her of the pendant and his contact with Combat Boots, back then and even now. He argues that he can’t be as emotional about having goodwill towards Pan-seok, and this is the opportunity he’s waited eleven years for.

He gets so worked up that it worries her, and she reminds him of the promise he made her—that no matter what, he’d let the law be the final judgment, and not take revenge into his own hands. Great, now I think she isn’t evil, which is probably going to bite me in the ass later. He calms down and agrees to keep his promise.

Soo-sun has been shivering all morning, and Dae-gu watches grumpily as Tae-il checks her forehead as they all walk into the precinct. He asks where she stayed last night, and when she says she slept at a friend’s place, Dae-gu’s eyes dart over warily.

The whole team gathers to confront the two brothers in the father-son murder case, and Dae-gu and Pan-seok exchange suspicious looks in silence. Pan-seok opens up the autopsy report, and the brothers go another round of accusing the other of killing Dad.

They have to pry them apart again, Pan-seok tells them that the time of death was a full day before the body was discovered. As he narrates the likely scenario, we see it in flashback: Dad thinks twice about the eldest son’s requests for help and starts using the brand new smartphone he gave him.

But all day he gets calls from his son that he can’t manage to answer, because he doesn’t know that you have to slide the button to pick up a call. Dad spends the day washing the younger son’s shoes by hand, and then runs back to the bathroom to pick up a call.

That’s when he slips on a slab of soap, and in an effort to keep the precious phone from breaking, he ends up hitting the floor head-first. He lies there bleeding on the floor, still struggling to answer the call from his eldest son, while his younger son is zoning out at his game.

They’re floored, and Pan-seok declares the case an accidental death. That’s a terrible way to die, but given the brothers’ snottiness, they could use a sobering moment of shared guilt.

Pan-seok takes the team out to lunch for a job well done, but it’s hard for everyone to be perky. Immediately following lunch, Gook calls his mom to ask for that food she offered to send up last time, and insists it’s because he misses Mom’s cooking.

Tae-il sits with his thumb over his mom’s number on his phone, wanting to call but chickening out at the last minute. And Dae-gu communicates with his mom in the only way he can—by writing out text messages that he can never send. He asks if she met Dad where she is, and if he’s good to her.

Pan-seok mulls over Dae-gu’s strange behavior since he arrived, from his refusal to tell anyone where he was from to his shockingly combative attitude towards Pan-seok. He can’t shake the thought that he might be Ji-yong. Thank goodness, because nobody likes a battle of wits where the wits are dim.

So he calls Gook out to take him over to the boys’ apartment, and asks for Dae-gu’s toothbrush outright. He takes it, and tells Gook to give the excuse that he dropped it in the toilet by accident. Poor Gookie frets, But Dae-gu will be mad at me…

Pan-seok tries all the drawers in Dae-gu’s desk, but they’re locked, and his laptop requires a password. He leaves with the toothbrush for now and warns Gook that he was never here.

Gook wonders what this is all about, guessing that nobody takes a toothbrush for anything other than a DNA test. He gasps, “Is he… his son? No, there’s the age difference and all… I’ve seen too many dramas.” Pfft.

Pan-seok submits the toothbrush for a DNA test, and Eung-do tells him it’s probably a good thing to just find out for sure since he’s likely to keep obsessing about it if there’s even a seed of doubt.

Eung-do asks why he isn’t on his date with Sa-kyung, and Pan-seok flails over to his locker and starts undressing right there. *REWIND*

This time he shows up to the right restaurant all dressed up in a crisp white shirt, and even impresses Sa-kyung with his trendy eatery know-how. He tells her all you have to do is google “tasty restaurant with oppa,” and you get all the best date spots in town. Ha. That’s actually clever.

He’s adorably proud of himself for it, and he does this super geeky overbite thing whenever he’s around Sa-kyung that just kills me. He gets flustered when she asks about Soo-sun staying over the other night, and he insists nervously that he left the apartment soon after she did.

Sa-kyung doesn’t seem overly fussed about it, but likes that he offered that up without her having to ask. She muses that he’s likely to house Soo-sun every night that it rains, but he’s quick to say no—she’ll definitely solve her housing crisis before then. Sa-kyung is satisfied at that answer, and lets it go. Phew, bullet dodged.

Hilariously, Pan-seok seems not to have known that the restaurant he chose serves spring rolls, and he fumbles to craft anything edible on his plate. Sa-kyung just makes a roll in silence and then puts it on his plate with a quippy, “Eat up, Oppa.” Hee.

They go window-shopping and tease each other with nicknames, and end up getting caught in the rain. They run to a storefront, and when he pulls her close to shield her from getting splashed by a passing car, she leans in and gives him a little kiss.

They hold hands and stand there waiting out the rain together. Their dates are so cute.

When we fade back in, it’s a new day and a new case. (Wait, but where did Soo-sun sleep in the rain?) The team is deployed in pairs to catch a suspect in an office building, and Pan-seok arrives on the roof to find Tae-il backing away slowly with his baton out.

The suspect comes into view, and he’s wielding a knife pointed at Gook’s throat. Oh no, hostage again? Pan-seok tells the rest of the team to back off, but poor Gook is the one who’s most disappointed in himself, and starts resisting even as the guy starts hitting him in the back of the head with the blunt end of the knife.

Tae-il screams at him to get it together and stop putting himself in more danger, but Gook is irrational and screams back that Tae-il might be a doctor, but he’s nothing more than a cop who’s been taken hostage three times, and refuses to have it happen again.

He takes this moment, of all moments, to out Tae-il as a doctor to everyone else on the team, and then charges at the suspect with all his strength. He knocks the knife out of his hand and they go tumbling down the stairs, where he’s captured. Pan-seok looks down at him with a smile of approval.

Gook limps over to Tae-il back at the station and apologizes for outing his big secret. He admits to feeling inferior and letting it get to him, and beats himself over the head for being so petty. Tae-il counters that that won’t appease him, and decides he should’ve outed Gook’s crush on Soo-sun just to get even.

Gook freaks out at the empty threat, and Tae-il just pushes him onto the couch so that he can tend to his twisted ankle. D’awww.

Gook mutters in a disgruntled tone that he’s annoyingly perfect, and Tae-il says coolly that he knows. Just like that, they’re back to teasing and roughhousing, and all is right with the world again.

Soo-sun’s oppa waits outside the precinct for her, and she runs out to greet him playfully. They go get ice cream and he marvels at his sister the detective, and she fishes for more compliments.

He takes one look and decides she looks old, especially when he’s stayed the same all these years. Ha, which is literally true since Oppa is the same actor for both timelines. They’re great together. Can Oppa move up to Seoul so she can have someone to speak to in her country accent?

Dae-gu happens to walk by the café, and Oppa immediately recognizes him as Ji-yong. Soo-sun is surprised that he sees Dae-gu as Ji-yong too, and he mentions that he saw Ji-yong in Masan just recently.

Later when they’re on a stakeout together, Soo-sun tries to prompt him to put his glasses on again, but he snaps back at her. She wonders if he’s mad at her for something because he’s being especially cold to her lately, but he just argues that he’s never been nice to begin with. True.

Dae-gu spots their suspect approaching in his rearview mirror, and grabs Soo-sun to duck down in the car. They wait it out for a beat huddled close together, and then he peers up… at the suspect who’s got his faced pressed up to the window.

They all jump back, and then the chase is on. They chase him through the neighborhood, but Soo-sun trips on an untied shoelace and Dae-gu loses him when he gets on a scooter and rides away.

They blame each other for losing him, and then Dae-gu sighs when he sees that she’s scraped up from falling. He stops her from bending down to tie her shoelaces and does it for her, which of course she remembers vividly as exactly the thing Ji-yong did eleven years ago.

He even ties them his secret special way, which is more proof than she’d ever need. Soo-sun calls out as he gets up to walk away, “Kim Ji-yong!” She knows it’s him, but he denies it emphatically over and over, so she keeps at it, insisting that she’s right.

She holds onto his arm and doesn’t back down, so he finally blurts, “If you say it one more time, I’ll kiss you!” Is that… supposed to be a threat? He says it like it’s a threat, and she lets go without another word.

It’s not a huge surprise that when Combat Boots makes a reappearance, it’s at Assemblyman Yoo’s office. The former chief of police and current politician has seemed shady from the start, but he looks quite peeved to learn that Combat Boots has returned to the country permanently.

Combat Boots grins as he tells the assemblyman that he hasn’t exactly been upfront with him about everything: that kid eleven years ago, well, he didn’t exactly kill him like he said he did. Whoops. Assemblyman Yoo can’t believe that loose thread has been dangling out there for all this time, and Combat Boots just chuckles and offers to finish the job at his request.

Pan-seok comes out of the DNA testing facility all tied up in anxious knots. He braces himself before opening the envelope. This time there’s no denying it: Dae-gu is a match to Mom’s DNA.

Pan-seok returns to the precinct with his eyes fixated on Dae-gu. He stares for a long drawn-out moment, and we see that in his line of sight, Dae-gu is just little fifteen-year-old Kim Ji-yong, sitting at the desk still wearing his school uniform.

He looks at him with such regret, and I half expect him to burst into tears right then and there, but he just lets out a long sigh. He asks Dae-gu in a soft voice to join him for a chat, and takes him up to the roof.

When he turns around to face him, Pan-seok can no longer hide the emotion on his face, and his eyes glisten with tears as he calls out gently, “Ji-yong-ah.” Dae-gu looks down and sees the DNA testing center envelope in his hand.

Dae-gu grits his teeth ready to do battle, but Pan-seok says in a shaky voice, “Thank you for being alive, for growing up so well.” He chokes on his tears as he repeats, “Thank you, so much.”

Dae-gu still denies it, but Pan-seok calls himself ajusshi like the old days and says he searched everywhere for him. He says he understands why Ji-yong would hate him so much, because of what happened to Mom, and because it’s all his fault.

But Dae-gu just grows angrier the more Pan-seok apologizes, and balls up his fist until it’s white-knuckled and shaking. Dae-gu insists again that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, but Pan-seok doesn’t let him walk away. He says the DNA test is something he can’t deny.

Dae-gu loses it and screams over and over that it isn’t him: “If I say I’m not, I’m not, you son of a bitch!” He rails at Pan-seok not to ask and adds, his voice dripping with hate, that he can go ahead and stay in the dark for the rest of his life and die of curiosity. Pan-seok’s face falls and he inches forward, but Dae-gu stomps away.

Soo-sun sits at her desk late into the evening, mulling over Dae-gu’s secret identity and why he’d keep lying. She decides to head over to the apartment and wedges her foot in the door, pleading for ten minutes of his time.

He finally relents and starts counting down, and she says that she can’t just let it go like this. She knows he’s Ji-yong, and then remembers to quickly add: “Don’t kiss me!” But she thinks she has a right to ask, since she worried about him a lot when he disappeared from Masan, and wonders if maybe there’s a reason he needs to hide his identity.

She says that if that’s the case, she’ll stop asking right now. He hesitates, and he looks like he might spill the beans… but he just keeps counting down. She sighs and gives up. But then at the last minute he says he isn’t Kim Ji-yong, “But I know him.”

He refers to Ji-yong in the third person and says that he asked him to tell her—that she’s right, that there’s a reason he can’t tell her, that he needs her to keep his secret. She nods and says she understands, and then stammers that that’s what he should tell his “friend” Ji-yong.

She switches gears and asks Dae-gu brightly if he’s eaten, and they head out. Soo-sun watches him drink with the sunniest smile on her face, and he wonders if she’s gone mental. She says it’s because she’s happy—when he, er, his friend Ji-yong disappeared, she thought he died.

All of Masan thought so too, and she regretted it all this time that she said those terrible things about his mom. She tells him to make sure to tell his friend, and he says it’s okay, and catches himself: “I mean, Ji-yong said it’s okay.”

She begs him to answer just one more question and asks about growing up in an orphanage. He tells her not to pity him, because he was lucky and grew up in a nice orphanage with a kind director, and got to go to college because of a benefactor. She smiles, relieved to hear that his childhood wasn’t awful, and then her one last question turns into just one more.

She tells Dae-gu to tell his friend Ji-yong that he can call her whenever he needs her. “Even if he doesn’t call me noona for the time being, I’ll forgive him.” HA. He scoffs, and she has to remind herself that today is a special occasion and he gets a pass. “Your friend Ji-yong is two years younger than me and he used to be all, noona, noona!”

She makes it clear that it’s very big of her to forgive him for that, and says she won’t even tell Tae-il or Gook about his real age, so if his friend Ji-yong ever needs her, he should call. She promises to keep his secret and be there when he calls, “Because I’m on Kim Ji-yong’s side, no matter what!” He can’t say it—that he’s grateful—but it’s written on his face, and she just stares at him happily while he eats.

They get ready to part ways out on the sidewalk, but at the last minute Soo-sun wraps her arms around his waist in a backhug. Her throat catches as she says, “Thank you.” And then she adds this bit of praise, “You were brave,” but the way she says it is like something an adult would tell a child: You did good, kid.

He raises a hand to hers at first to pull away, but she says it again and holds on, and he just lets his hand rest on hers. She clutches him tightly, and he can’t fight his tears anymore and cries.

COMMENTS

FINALLY, the cat’s out of the bag! I found today’s episode to be quite promising, in that we’re finally past the obvious beats and secret revelations that we as an audience have known from the start, which means now we can stop waiting for Soo-sun and Pan-seok to catch up. She was more frustrating than he was on that score, since Dae-gu was practically dropping hints in her lap with giant bows on them, but when he stooped down to tie her shoe in this episode it struck me that he secretly wants her to know, deep down. Because he’s clearly not an idiot, though I suppose he does think that she is; still, he can’t have expected to keep it secret from her forever while he’s going around exposing his top-secret shoelace tricks. We all knew it was coming the second he did it as a tween, but it was no less sweet when she recognized him as an adult by his double-knotted-rabbit-ears handiwork.

I loved the choice to have Dae-gu and Soo-sun talk about Ji-yong like he wasn’t there, which adds a great touch to the conversation where they get to be a little more frank while hiding behind the we’re-not-talking-about-me façade. It also forces them to tamp down their emotions, which I always find more interesting than just laying your soul bare all the time.

My favorite thing about the reunions for both Pan-seok and Soo-sun is that they both see Dae-gu as fifteen years old all of a sudden. It’s like Ji-yong was frozen in time because he disappeared from their lives at that age. He left such an indelible impression on them when they thought he died—Soo-sun because she was young, and Pan-seok because he felt responsible. They instantly become Ajusshi and Noona all over again, and the warmth in their eyes is so touching as they each thank him sincerely for being alive. I believe them both, and it makes me even sadder to think it’s been eleven years since he’s been loved like that by anybody. We know he’s pretty stunted in adolescence in many ways, but there’s something greatly comforting about the fact that other people still see him as that little kid too.

It’s no shocker that Cha Seung-won steals the show since he’s the veteran here, but he was especially great in this episode, where he remained so understated and kept the big reveal anchored in such a perfect mix of happiness and sadness. He just wore it on his face, from the relief over finding Ji-yong alive to the regret over the years he must’ve spent growing up all alone. I just loved the massive distance between them, and how Pan-seok kept inching toward him and searching for a way in.

I’m still not convinced that Chief Kang isn’t evil (because she clearly didn’t happen to become Dae-gu’s benefactor by sheer coincidence), but I wonder if she was being sincere about making Dae-gu promise not to take revenge into his own hands. Because if she and Pan-seok are on the same side, Dae-gu actually has a fighting chance of taking down the bad guys. I won’t get greedy though; for now we have budding romances and growing friendships, and a father-son dynamic duo just waiting to clear up decades-long misunderstandings, fight crime together, and go out for ice cream. What’re the odds it won’t take ten more episodes to get there?

I also wanna believe she's nice, I think she maybe his real mother (dn't know it's a drama everything is possible cuz the way she looks at him and cared for him) or maybe she's his aunt, her only brother DG's father passed away, and she didn't get in touch with DG'mum she looked for him but find that's it's too late (DG'mum passed away) so she searched for him, and since she's in the police, she smelt the fishy thing around the assembly man, and when finding DG, she wanted to protect him by making sure his life is easy, than when he's old enough, she'll have his back against the assembly man to avenge her brother (DG's dad)
Did anyone notice when Gook was a hostage than he managed to take down the criminal, SS and DG were downstairs, and DG pulled SS away (behind him) so that (if the guy stood up) he would protect her?!!!

I actually came up with a theory, since I want the Chief to be what she appears, which really explains it all. I could totally be wrong, but I'm optimistic.

I think that she's related to the dead girl, the one that Oma died because of witnessing the murder. Maybe even is the dead girl's mother, which is why she sought out Ji Yong and became his benefactor; her taking care of him as a way to make up for Oma being murdered. I suspect that she may have changed her name, so that no one, least of all Yoo Moon Bae, will suspect who she is. I also suspect that Moon Bae is the killer who got away with it because of Oma's murder. Which also means that he's changed his name, since I doubt Pan Seok would have ever just let this guy become that influential. My theory also jives with the fact that the Chief really seems to hate Moon Bae, just because of how she acts around him, plus when I think back to Dae Goo's conversations with S, it matches the theory that she doesn't believe that Pan Seok is dirty and is trying to get Dae Goo to believe it, too. I hope I'm right, because that would be a horrible development for Dae Goo and I don't think he'd ever trust anyone again.

One episode and no preview... what are they doing?

CSW is really awesome at this role. He does those emotional scenes and the awkward "Oppa.." scenes so well and effortlessly!

Also liking Soo Seon. I knew she was gonna bring up being noona to him haha I hope it comes up more, just for fun..

Agreed about CSW. Girlfriday agrees, too, because:

"It’s no shocker that Cha Seung-won steals the show since he’s the veteran here, but he was especially great in this episode, where he remained so understated and kept the big reveal anchored in such a perfect mix of happiness and sadness."

Well, it is not just because he is a veteran. K-dramas are populated with veterans, but not all of them can steal the show like CSW does. CSW is a veteran who does not "act with his feet."

Can we please have more of Taeil on screen? A lot more? Whenever he appears next to monochrome Daegoo, Taeil eclipses him.

Count me in! Daegu, monochrome? Definitely not! maybe at first, but now there are more and more shades being seen. I feel that Tae Il's more monochrome - so far I haven't seen much of a range of emotions - not his fault, just the storyline.

For sure. Tae-il is a nice guy, but bland and boring. If he left the show I'm not sure I'd notice? Honestly the worst of the rookies by far. Might have something to do with the actor's busy schedule, but he looks worn out and half asleep most of the time as well.

Yes Tae-II looked like he was about to go to sleep in every scene he appears in! And his facial acting looks the same to me most of the time... compared to DaeGu, TaeII is like an emotionless being while the former has all his emotions portrayed in his eyes. That to me is real acting.

Like how good PS is... just looking at his eyes you can feel all his emotions :)

Lol, Tae-il eclipses Dae-gu?? I guess everyone does have different views! I love the character trajectory of Dae-gu and how he's slowly growing up from the emotional state he's been stuck in for the past 11 years. As much as Tae-il is very sweet and lovable (much more than Gook at least), he's the least developed and someone that's been the same since episode 1.

Tae-Il eclipses Dae-gu, really? I don't think so at all. To me, the actor playing Tae-Il is so wishy-washy and listless in this role, and his range of expression seems so limited. Most of the time, I feel like he's not even trying. It's a bit disappointing, because he wasn't like this in YFAS.

He's flying back and forth from China doing a movie I think. He's probably exhausted. From his original character description he sounded like Dae Gu's rival (plus doctor vs lawyer), but that has obviously been scrapped. Now he's just around when he's in Korea and can film a couple scenes. I don't even think people have noticed he hasn't been in the drama much lately, that's how forgettable his character is.

Oh, I didn't know that, about the commute to and from China. Well, that might explain it--his schedule must be super-tiring.

Ahn Jae Hyun has to host M Countdown as well. That must be quite time consuming too as that was partly why Kim Woo Bin gave it up.

Great episode. I'm glad the weekly cases seem to be ending. This one was actually pretty touching though. Happy everything is out in the open and everyone made up! I never thought PS would confirm with a DNA test. I just knew the results were going to the tapered with or Dae Gu would find out before and switch the results. But nope, the simplest way actually worked.

There's no way PS is in on any shady business. Unless that's what they want us to think, but seriously there's no way! The chief I'm not so sure about. I seriously go back and forth every time she speaks. Seems way too much of a coincidence that l she met him randomly and became his benefactor. Plus Dae Gu seems semi-well adjusted in the past, even after his mother's death. Makes me think she's been influencing him in a lot of ways, but then she doesn't want him to take revenge either but is providing him with the ability to take revenge. She confuses me.

The end was great and I love that Dae Gu was able to trust Soo Sun at least that much. And yeah, it was great how they talked about Ji Yong like he was someone else but both knowing they were talking about Dae Gu. Very touching episode all around.

This episode is a roller coaster ride, swingng emotion left and right. I was smiling from ear to ear watching Pan Seok adorkable date and the Gook-Tae Il make up and turned into a cry baby watching Dae Gu talks about Ji Yong as a third person. Glad that they've 'found' him.

And I'm more glad SS isn't as bird brain as we all (including DG) thought she is, the actors nailed their scenes, they are amazing, can't wait to see SS treat DG as a little brother while he's falling harder for her, he might use :"I dn't see u as a noona but as my girl so dn't look at me as ur dansaeng but as a man u can love" or his famous :noona nae yeojanika" seriously that would be A.M.A.Z.I.N.G can't wait for Seung Gi to have his noona romance <3 <3 <3

I wouldn't be surprised if the theory that Chief Kang is a double crossing evil conspirator behind the benefactor face turned out to be well-founded, considering the fact that it's a flip trope used by many suspense themed works to surprise the audience, making it ironically not that surprising.
However, have you considered that maybe Chief Kang knows the case is somehow related to Assemblyman Yoo, and is basically using Ji Yong to get the down and dirty on Yoo as blackmail material for her bill? I feel it wasn't a coincidence that in the episode after they revealed Kang's connection to Ji Yong, they also revealed Boot's connection to Yoo.

I don't think that Chief Kang is evil. But I do think that it definitely was not a coincidence tt she became DG's benefactor. I think that @Jacks, you're right about her using DG to bring the congressman down.

I was just thinking the same thing and prayed there were others who saw the potential too. I think Chief believes in PS but is willing to allow DG/JY to investigate him for his own cause, so long as he participates in her cause. I think she knows something about the congressman and maybe this is part of why she wants that bill pushed through so badly. But yes, she certainly sought DG/JY out and played the role of dear daddy for a reason.

But what was the congressman covering up to have Boots kill DG/JY's mom? Did the congressman kill the victim that the mother was going to testify about seeing the men run from? I wish we had more info on the victim that started it all. And what's the relation between Boots and PS? Anybody have any good guesses yet? Ah, I'm so glad secret identities are a thing of the past with this drama - unlike some other unmentionable drama that refuses to get on with it already.

Cha Seung Won makes my heart go dugeun dugeun, so I loved every minute of that date, which was all sorts of adorable. (Though my mom would probably scold them for putting so many random things in a summer roll.) Soooo sooooo cute, I could barely handle those two. I'll probably rewatch that date scene lots until next week's episodes because dramas have conditioned me to expect a separation period soon after such lovey-dovey scenes (which: noooo! Prove me wrong, drama! Please!).

I'm so glad there won't be anymore Ji Yong/not Ji Yong fakeouts with Soo Sun and with Pan Seok. Finally!

Tae Il's secret wasn't what I was expecting it to be. "Oh, okay. And?..." was my initial reaction to the reveal. Maybe I've seen too many dramas?

When see DaeGu crying, I feel like the weight in my own shoulder also being removed. Really happy how DG start open his heart to SS, and love how SS method to reaching his heart, didn't push him to admit that he is JY, but she just open his hand so JY can hold it anytime. :)

About another thing, I'll think it latter. just love how the story line developing. I'll enjoy my feeling about DG-SS relationship for now, they give me my lovely shoeslace scene after all.. :D

Maybe there's some trauma attached to shoelace tying for her. Maybe every time she touches her shoelace she gets flashbacks of being lost in a shoe shop at the mall in the shoelace section, crying for her mom, all hungry and cold. Thank you for the recaps GF.

Aww..this episode..*sniff*. I've re-watched the last part countless times already. It's so beautiful, I love it.

For me, Seung Gi's eyes are so expressive. It's as if they are 'speaking' to me. His hated and angered eyes toward Pan Seok in the rooftop and his eyes when Soo Sun back hugged him were exceptional, imho.

Now I'm certain that I've watched too much drama because when Soo Sun caught a cold I though she would collapse and Dae Gu would bring her to his room to have some rest and the roommate hijink was started. But no, I was wrong and I forgot that she's a detective and she must be strong and won't collapse easily.

Dae Gu's threat is the best threat ever, hahaha, because if I was Soo Sun, every time I met him, I would call him Ji Yong! Ji Yong! Ji Yong! ;)

Yay!! Thanks for the speedy recap!! I've been refreshing repeatedly waiting for this. This is the first time I'm watching a kdrama live, and the waiting is just paaainful...

Great episode for the continued character-building and reveals, and I love that Soo-sun finally, finally figured it out. Though I do wonder, does Soo-sun know she was pretty much the last person in Masan to see Ji-yong? I mean, since his mother's death and his disappearance were "big news", she really should suspect that something significant happened that night she saw him in the school, not to mention she picked up the pendant somehow. I'm hoping for more flashblacks on that on.

I don't know if it's just my love for that drama, but I am reminded of IHYV in this episode, from DG phantom-texting his mom to Chief Kang making him promise to not take the law into his own hands. To me, DG is similar to Su-ha, except minus the savior-first-love to ground him.

Dae-gu's mental trajectory is worrying. His confrontation with Pan-seok seem more like a teenage temper tantrum than a legit way to deflect Pan-seok. He seems emotionally stuck in that night, and his hate for Pan-seok might blind him to all reason. I'm hoping they sort out their issues soon so we can get some good episodes of bromance and/or father-son-ness.

On the other hand, a little disappointed in Sa-kyung's character. Her dates and budding relation with Pan-seok is super cute and all, but there's not a whole lot more to her as a person. I was hoping for more interaction between her and the team, like show some concern for Soo-sun's tent-living (where DID she sleep that second rainy night?) instead of just being jealous.

It's going to be super hilarious if Soo-sun tries to act like a noona to Dae-gu now. And can't wait for the romance to shape up. (It will, right? Say that it will!) I actually thought Soo-sun's cold would become more serious so we can get some concern and fawning from the boys, heh. But I suppose noticing the arm-scrape and shoe-lace tying will do for now.

Oh and, when they were staking out in the van and the suspect approaches, it would've been way less suspicious if they pretend to be a couple on a date in the car rather than ducking weirdly. Actually, they should just do all their stake-out/undercover work pretending to be a couple. Just sayin'.

Oh I second that Dae-gu's hatred is very worrying. The way he seethed that Pan-seok should wonder his whole life if he's Ji-yong says a lot about his thought process. He's so blinded by revenge and has fallen in so much darkness, he doesn't see whats right and wrong anymore. But we have 11 more episodes; Soo-sun and Pan-seok will get him out of it. This drama is really his journey to let go and forgive those who deserves forgiveness - including himself.

As for the romance, LOL, if the kiss, constant bickering, jealousy and backhug is any indication... that's running full steam at the moment.

Required fields are marked *

Lol, I really disagree with that even if I know where you're coming from. DS's insane obsession has no reason other than 'looove' and 'heartbeat' and is based on blind trust that's quite literally blind.

Dae-gu's obsession in proving Pan-seok is evil has concrete reasons even if not he doesn't want to see any other side. His 15 year old self has created a monster out of Pan-seok because he had many hints to prove that, and with Boots back in the scene, he's even more sure. Soo-sun doesn't know what he knows, and Chief Kang - if she's being genuine - truly believes Pan-seok is innocent because she's worked with him for many years.

Dae-gu is definitely blinded by hatred, but it isn't quite irrational like Hoon. When he gets a reality check, it must be something that'd shake his world. Because if I were him, I'd need something convincing to believe the biggest villain in my life isn't actually a villain.

Dae Gu does have every reason (and actual proof) to suspect PS and hate him, even if some of the hate he feels for him is just guilt he feels himself (blaming PS for forcing his mother, when he knows deep down he changed her mind). But PS is suspicious in meeting with Boots and Boots did mention his twice and had the pennant that Dae Gu told PS the location of. This isn't stuff Dae Gu just imagined. It's what he experienced.

But we know PS so we know there is more there than meets the eye, but Dae Gu can't know that yet. I'm not sure he has reached worrying level quite yet. If he gets the facts of the case and he's still stuck on hating PS then I'll worry.

Soo Sun needs to get her bird brain going. She should have considered it odd that Ji young went to her school, and then was running all over the place and hiding. And then there was this strange man with combat boots and a scar lurking around. Anyone with even 2 peas for a brain would think it odd, especially when Jiyoung goes missing soon after.

I'm still hoping for my Panseok-Daegu bromance.

I think this episode was the best we've had since episode 2 because it focused so much on our main leads and their relationship/character development. How awesome is it the two most important people find out Dae-gu's real identity in such an understated and moving way?

Firstly, I want to believe Chief Kang isn't evil. The thought of Dae-gu living life for the past 11 years being thankful to someone who's using him is just heartbreaking. Their past is so sweet and touching; for that to be sincere, I need her to be one of the good guys. She also seems really determined about wanting Dae-gu to take the right path in getting justice. I'm just wondering why she didn't let Pan-seok in on where Ji-yong is if she believed he wasn't evil. I don't know where they're taking this story line, but I suppose that's a a really good sign that their suspense is suspenseful.

I called on Tae-il being a doctor last week, so I'm not in the least bit surprised. I am glad that Gook understands how petty and immature he was acting and that they're back to being adorable again. That scene with everyone remembering their parents is just heartwarming. I can't even count how many times that has happened to me. Sometimes its important to get simple reminders of what you take for granted that others unfortunately don't have.

I agree with GF that Dae-gu definitely wanted Soo-sun to know who he is. It's a sort of denial in itself - similar to what I believe he has in regards to guilt of his mother's death. He wants her to know, even if he vehemently lies to himself that he doesn't. I was happy when he pushed his guard down and just let her in. He needs someone he can trust right now. Someone who he believes only thinks for his safety, is truly concerned for him and is in his side. That would be Soo-sun.

Speaking of which, Soo-sun is just awesome. I adore the girl. Her reaction to finding out the truth is simple and honest and absolutely sweet. She didn't milk him for details, only asked if managed okay all these years. I love that she can openly tell him how glad she is to know he's alive. He needed that hug and he needed to cry it out. I think opening up to someone who reminds you of who you were and how much they liked you for being that person... its a huge burden off his head.

I'm really excited to see what happens next. Such a bummer we only get one episode this week, because I'm loving the progress of this drama. On a side note, I dunno if it's just me, but I was totally convinced Seung-gi was around 18 years old in the flashback. All he did was messed up his hair a little and wore glasses. The guy can very well pull of a high school student if he tried, me thinks.

I really sympathized with this episode. Mostly cause I am having a moment of my own right now... I have been feeling depressed and regretful to work all the time, and even though my parents have sometimes been awful towards me, I still feel like the guilty one for not having enough time to call or visit. ´I also feel like I am neglecting my friends because of work, but I dont have the guts to leave. jobs aren´t easy to come by. so I would have liked to call someone too, but they dont even accept my calls any more... This episode got me bad. I felt more depressed...

and then some when they continued with secret identity revealed-not revealed-but-people-still-know. Everyone compliments Cha Seung Won, and with good cause, but Go Ara was really.... she did not just act, she lived the situation.

and Tae Il´s secret..... what´s that. You are a doctor? so what? Not that big of a reveal. But I liked the bromance scene

Hope you feel better in the morning. Sounds like you have too much on your plate. That's what we all watch drama - to unwind and let the tears flow. About you job situation. First, determine what makes you unhappy and why. Then try to fix it first, maybe it's little things that get to you. If it's a big problem, and you are in the wrong work place,or even wrong profession, start looking around for something different. It's always easier to find another job while you are working, trust me on that.

Required fields are marked *

Gosh, isn't that the truth? I had a job I HATED but wasn't confident in my ability to find another one because of how hard they are to come by. I ended up getting laid off and it was a blessing in disguise because a family member was diagnosed and went to hospice so I moved to spend time with him before he passed. I spent 7 months living on unemployment and looking for a job. I finally landed a job with an amazing company, in an amazing industry. I love the industry so much - plus I'm a workaholic,- I took up a second job as part time work and I love each of them equally. But getting the second job - I applied to one position, I interviewed one time, took a drug test and was hired on the spot. A two week process from start to finish! Finding one job, unemployed, took SEVEN MONTHS. Job hunting, while employed, took only TWO WEEKS.

Redfox, seriously, time's too short to spend on something you dislike. Find another job and even if you don't know what you want to do, try something completely foreign. I have jumped around from so many different jobs and industries - none of them related. And when you interview while still employed, you're not as high-strung during the process because if you flunk that interview, oh well. You're still making money until you find that one job that's perfect for you.

Long story short - do what makes YOU happy!

Soo Sun probably doesn't know the pendent belongs to Dae Gu but it's a dangling plot point that's annoying me.

I think that Daegu is refusing to admit that he is Ji Young out of fear. Technically, it's quite silly not to admit it, as the evidence is out there. But I think for him to admit it, would bring back all the horror, anguish, frustration, fear and guilt that he has replaced with anger and vengeance. Ironically, deep down he wants SS to know.

Right now, he's Eun Daegu, the adult, who he thinks is in control, and as Daegu he has a mission - but if he returns as Ji Young, he'll be the helpless teenager again, reliving his mother's murder, re-living the fear and anxiety, which he can't cope as he has no one to hold on to and support him. It makes him too vulnerable.

I foresee that in the future SS will be there for him, and hopefully, PS too. He actually needs to re-visit his past in order for him to have full closure and for him to heal. But he can't - he's holding on to the rope with one hand, and he's scared to fall, cause there's no one to catch him or help him mend the broken pieces.

I love how gookie keeps calling dae gu 'Dae gu dae gu!' like a little boy calling out to his hyung. So cute!

One strength of this drama is character development and the emphasis on other side characters. Dae gu is seeing himself as a real cop and not just being a cop to seek revenge. He is starting to find this job fufilling. Gookies is growing from a scarery cat to a cop who is brave enough to bring down the criminal who is threating gook with a knife. And Pan seok realising life is not only about catching criminals but also about love and family. This show reveals how characters grow up in every episode. Really consistent.

I like how most of the side characters have their own story to tell. This is not a drama about revenge but also about budding relationships between sideI like how most of the side characters have their own story to tell. This is not a drama about revenge but also about budding relationships between sidecharacters. I have a hunch gookie has stellar cop material. Just that this strength is not realised. Tae-ii's background and character remains a mystery. I just can't make out who he really is. The same actor who portrayed Tae ii acted in YFAS too. But one biggest flaw of that show is its inability to crave out memorable and meaningful side characters. I only remember him as Cheon Song Yi's brother and maybe the ET scene. It is nice to see that he has a decent charcater here in YAAS.

I want father-son bromance adorbs and I want it noooow!! Soo son is sweet too, but I'm really in this for the evolution of the relationship between DG and PS.

Also, they did a really good job of turning around and convincing me that S isn't evil- so she must be evil... Right? I DONT KNOW WHAT TO THINK.

I'm also more than ready for the confrontation between DG an Boots! I'm tired of watching him lurk secretively and talk to everyone AROUND Dae Gu. And I wanna know why he decided 11 years after the fact that "oh hey maybe I should come back and finish the job" because it seems really convenient that he contacts PS for the first time in 11 years right when DG gets there. Is it drama logic or proof that S is really evil after all?

This was everything I like in a "reveal" episode, where the reactions aren't over-the-top or overly angsty yet they are not understated either. Both PS and SS reacted like I imagined they would, and it just... it just touched my heart. Despite its poignancy, the writer managed to infuse some humour, like when DG and SS tried to hide from the the suspect, only to look up and find him staring at them. I also found Daegu's kissing threats very amusing. He actually mentioned it THREE times! Soo Sun, sigh, can't take a hint!

And CSW and LSG nailed their scenes! If I could. I would jump into my computer screen and give each of them a hug! They both so need it!

I also like how DG and SS talked about JY in the third person - it really thugged my heart and I couldn't stop crying. But somehow, I still can't quite see SS as a romantic heroine - not she didn't score points with me in this ep, but she seems more like a motherly substitute. She was asute enough to sense that DG needed that hug and assurance, and somehow, I can't help feeling that she needed them too.

I think that PS's son died on the day of DG's mum's death. This is just my theory, but I think that PS went looking for DG and was late in picking up his son, hence the accident and death. If this is true, then it might very well be the thing to break DG's hatred for PS.

Re: "and a father-son dynamic duo just waiting to clear up decades-long misunderstandings, fight crime together, and go out for ice cream."

????

What did I miss watching the episode? I've read through the comments and I didn't get the answer either.

Who Are The Father And Son???

There is no actual father and son; I think this was referring to the potential for DaeGu and PanSeok to develop that kind of relationship, once DaeGu overcomes his animosity to Pan Seok and realizes that they're on the same side. I'm not sure if I see it quite going there myself, but I'm hoping for a friendly and mutually respectful sunbae-hoobae dynamic, at least.

There's no father & son... Gook just had a thought of that and then said 'oh maybe I watched drama too much'...

What I'm curious is about is the inclusion of the ex-chief (now a politician) in the scenario. Why did the boots guy visited him and told him that he could not kill the boy 11 years ago... wow, another mystery...

can't wait for the ep 10! SBS please release ep 10 preview ASAP!

Thanks for the recap...
I thought that chief was evil too... but after this episode I'm not so sure anymore... The interaction between her and Dae-gu was so warm that made me want to believe in her. I don't know, maybe she is related to him some how, specially since we still don't know who his father is (praying they don't trow the archenemy=father on this one), so she might be his aunt, stepmother or a family friend maybe ;)

This is so cheesy, but I love the montage of Pan Suk's date. He's so good in them, it reminded me of the date montage in City Hall, where Kim Sun-Ah and him went on their date wearing matching sneakers. It's so cute!!

I love this kdrama so damn much, I keep on waiting for wednesday and thursday to come *lol* and I also love your deconstruction gf! :)
somehow I feel like Daegu's first love will appear when things are moving smoothly between Daegu and Soosun, if it were to happen, I hope the writer will make it funny and not annoying (bcs most dramas did it annoying-ly) like maybe Yoona to be the cast of the first love? that'd be fun ㅋㅋㅋ

So far, aside from the shenanigans getting a little out of control, this drama has avoided destroying logic. This episode, though, disappointed me in that respect.

First, DaeGu is obviously a sharp guy. I find it hard to believe that he never considered a DNA test. He knows of the Legendary Seo PanSuk, so it seemed silly to me that he didn't have some sort of plan in place to thwart a detective.

Then, if that misstep wasn't bad enough (I can forgive DaeGu for being human), his reaction on the rooftop was laughably bad. 99% accuracy and he's still "denying" it, although it worked out to be more like him saying, "You don't get the comfort of knowing I'm still alive." which I think could have been a great reaction if the writing had been better.

And the tying of the shoes. Just after she's questioning him about being JiYong, he decides to tie her shoe using his special technique, thus making it obvious that she was right. Silly DaeGu, you're starting to lose the intelligence that makes your character great.

Finally, "I'm not JiYong, but he's my friend." Obviously they both know she's not buying it, but that whole scene was weak. Good thing each scene that was bad was surrounded by amazingly emotional segments that made this episode great overall, even with the flaws.

I was just sad that DaeGu lost his edge.

Does anyone feel like Dae Gu/Ji Yong's real father might come into this? I mean, they could have made his mother a widow...but they chose to mention that his father had left them. I dunno, maybe that was done to make her appear selfless, but this is Kdrama...I feel like a "I-am-your-father" revelation may be in the near future.

Or maybe I'm just assuming too much...

Either way, I absolutely LOVED this episode and have desperately been awaiting episode 10. I really hope Dae Gu and Pan Seok's relationship will change after this...well, I doubt it will on Dae Gu's side just yet, but hopefully Pan Seok will start seeing him in a different light now that he knows the truth.

I REALLY hope they don't make the chief evil...I mean, if it was a choice between her and Pan Seok, I'd rather he be the good one, but if we can have both...I mean, imagine how awful it would be for Dae Gu. He's already suffered so much, if he finds out that the only parental figure he had after his mother's death is using him...

I agree that Cha Seung Won is very good in this episode, but I loved Seung Gi even more. In the rooftop scene, his rage was so desperate, leading him to absurd and hateful denial, that he left me speechless once again. You could feel the intense sadness of teenager Ji Yong through these fierce yet anguished eyes. I think I know quite well Seung Gi the actor but he never ceases to amaze me. He's so surprising as Dae Gu. Even his voice and tone are completely different than usual.
I love this drama and my favorite parts are those violent confrontations between Dae Gu and Pan Seok. Both actors are great. Seung Gi is so touching as this introvert and broken guy, and in a completely different way from how he portrayed the adorable Kang Chi.
I was also very touched by the end sequence between Dae Gu and Soo Sun. The conversation between them, this well-deserved and sensual back hug, and above all Dae Gu's tears. Beautiful drama.
