Triangle: Episode 9
by gummimochi
With one small-time casino under Young-dal’s belt, it’s time for him to set his sights on bigger and better casinos. Getting there won’t be easy, and one might think that he’s going through all that trouble because he wants to carve his own success story, but then you learn it’s all for gaining one skunk-haired chairman’s approval. I’d tell him that talking to baby bro might help him gain some challenging insight on aspiring to greater things in life, but he’s too busy grinning like a fool in love.

EPISODE 9 RECAP
After taking over Madame Jang’s casino, Young-dal works up the nerve to ask Jung-hee out on a date. He picks her up with a car and dressed in his fashionable threads. Excuse me while I take a moment to admire his spiffy new look.
Aw, he’s a gentleman, too, and they drive off, although their exit is caught by those snippy sunbaes and casino unni Hyun-mi.
Jung-hee admires Young-dal’s new ride (aw, I liked the motorcycle though) and Young-dal admits that it’s borrowed—sometimes debtors will pawn off their assets but never come to find them again because they’re too deep in gambling debt. Jung-hee dismisses Hyun-mi’s concerned text that the rumor mill will be churning about her and Young-dal tomorrow, replying that it’s nobody’s business and it doesn’t matter.
Young-dal takes her out to a fancy sit-down dinner, where Jung-hee shyly says she feels out of place. He says she’s the prettiest woman in the entire room. She teases him, saying that line makes him sound like a player, and he takes that as a compliment. Aww, they’re adorable.
Seeing them act cute and polite to each other with their permanent smiles is just plain nice to watch. Noting his cheery mood, she asks if something good happened to him today. There is, but Young-dal says he’ll hold off on sharing the good news until it turns into something substantial.
There’s something he’d like to thank Jung-hee for first, and Young-dal says that he knows what sort of things people in this town say and think about him, but he’s thankful that she chooses to be in his company in spite of all that.
His words are brutally honest, saying how meeting her made him feel ashamed for the first time in his life. That was something entirely new for him, he says, “but after I got to know you and whenever I thought of you, I was embarrassed about everything.”
He makes her a promise, though: If she understands how he feels, he’ll work hard to lead a life that isn’t shameful. Finished, Young-dal nervously toys with his hands and shrinks into his chair sheepishly. She smiles. Awww.
They return home, and before Jung-hee heads inside, she turns around to tell him that she’s no better than he is, so there’s no reason for him to feel ashamed with her. Touched, his eyes start to well up with tears and is stuck on cloud nine for the rest of the night. Inside, Jung-hee puts on the necklace he gave her.
Dong-soo agrees to help Chairman Yoon, and even though the chairman insists on treating his men well, he declines the offer for a high-ranking position. Instead, he inquires after Chairman Yoon’s relationship with Chairman Go, and gets the vague answer that it’s an ill-fated relationship.
Yang-ha arrives to join them just then, and Dong-soo rises to exchange greetings. Yang-ha seems to feel a connection through their handshake. Hmm.
Dong-soo recalls an earlier conversation with Shin-hye, who had decided to abandon her patient confidentiality clause from the last episode and told Dong-soo everything about Yang-ha’s backstory, specifically how Yang-ha was adopted. Back in the present, Dong-soo is told that he’ll be helping Yang-ha wage war on Chairman Go.
Young-dal’s recent takeover has earned him another audience with Chairman Go, though, Boss Min enlightens her beneficiary on how Chairman Go really sees him. He’s no better than a hunting dog in Chairman Go’s eyes, and she’s telling him this because she considers Young-dal too valuable to be simply abandoned afterward.
In other words, Boss Min offers Young-dal to come under her wing where he won’t be a throwaway card. That sounds like a pretty good deal to Jang-soo’s ears, but Young-dal disagrees. If Chairman Go sees him as a hunting dog, then it’s up to Young-dal to work hard to change his mind and gain his sincere approval.
As Dong-soo waits for Shin-hye outside, a pair of vans loaded with Chairman Go’s thugs drive up to him. Naturally he refuses to be taken, and then fights off as many gangsters as he can. But there are too many of them and he eventually gets beaten and taken away, and Shin-hye arrives two seconds too late.
Young-dal visits Chairman Go in the hospital, and while he accepts the chairman’s praises graciously, the choice words that he’s still “useful” and an “asset” stick out like a sore thumb to his ears.
Chairman Go is impressed by how Young-dal managed to pull a scam to acquire his first casino, but now it’s time to set his sights on bigger targets, say, cheating at Chairman Yoon’s casino, Daejung. Tackling such a big casino makes Young-dal nervous, but Chairman Go isn’t one to listen to excuses.
Overcoming challenges is the only surefire way to prove one’s worth and capabilities. He needs to shake up Daejung casino, and orders Young-dal to do a good job. For him, of course. Young-dal gives a reluctant nod.
Chairman Go is informed of Dong-soo’s capture, and he invites Young-dal to tag along. Ha, how much do I love how Chairman Go dresses up to see Dong-soo? Man’s got to look good in front of his most hated former detective.
When they arrive at the warehouse, Dong-soo is weary and barely conscious. Young-dal winces to see Dong-soo in his battered state, and Chairman Go rubs in how there’s no use going by the book in their longstanding history when they can just use their fists instead. “I’ll finish you off with my fists,” he spits venomously.
Then he tasks Young-dal to beat Dong-soo on his behalf. Oh crap, it’s both a test of Young-dal’s loyalty and to see Dong-soo suffer. Young-dal hesitates and he meets Dong-soo’s gaze. And then Dong-soo nods, giving him the go-ahead.
It’s telling how Young-dal stalls for as much time as possible, shaking his head at Dong-soo once more. But Dong-soo gives him the green light again, and after another pause, Young-dal launches his fist at Dong-soo’s face. Again and again and again.
It’s heartbreaking to watch Young-dal’s fist fly with such guilt written on his face, but Dong-soo takes the beating until he finally collapses again. When asked what they should with him, Chairman Go twitches, “Get rid of him.”
Shin-hye and the detectives don’t arrive at the warehouse until nightfall, but luckily for them, the gangsters are still there. While the detectives take on the thugs, Shin-hye scans the place for Dong-soo and sees him lying unconscious on the floor. She weaves through the fight (totally unscathed!) to get to him.
Thankfully Dong-soo comes to at the hospital by the time Chief Hwang arrives, and the latter fumes to hear that this was Chairman Go’s doing. Dong-soo clarifies that he threw the first punch, and it’s no use throwing the chairman behind bars when he’ll be released right away anyway.
“If I can’t expel him myself, then it’s better to leave him alone,” Dong-soo mutters despairingly. He vows to handle this on his own without anyone’s help.
Shin-hye insists on taking care of Dong-soo that evening, and Young-dal drops by to see him. Once the two men are alone, Young-dal conveys his apologies, but Dong-soo says there’s no need since he would’ve ended up beaten to a pulp anyway.
Young-dal can’t even bring himself to look at Dong-soo, who grabs him by the lapel and draws him close. Dong-soo pleads with Young-dal to become one of Chairman Go’s men, and then sends him away in case they’re seen together. Young-dal looks sorry to leave so soon, but he does on Dong-soo’s insistence.
Back at Daejung casino, Director Hyun confronts Yang-ha about a pair of casino employees’ being reassigned to the resort. We’ve overheard the casino managers gossiping that it’s quite the demotion, and moreover, these particular employees are on Director Hyun’s side.
Yang-ha is unfazed, however, saying that Director Hyun should consider himself lucky that his own name didn’t appear on that list. He’s well aware that Director Hyun was the mole who leaked info to Chairman Go, and he’s chosen to put up with it this time because his father respects Director Hyun. But he makes it clear that it won’t be good to try his patience again.
The annoying sunbae trio ribs Jung-hee on her acquaintance with Young-dal. Jung-hee doesn’t stand for their belittling remarks though, and fires back that it’s none of their business who she’s seeing thankyouverymuch.
Their casino manager only adds fuel to the fire when she announces that Jung-hee will be included in the VIP roster today, to everyone’s surprise. Hyun-mi seems pleased, but when the others gripe about it, the manager says they can take it up with Yang-ha if they’ve got a problem with it.
Although Madame Jang’s lackey is convinced that Young-dal scammed them out of their own casino, she believes that he didn’t. One would think Madame Jang would be suspicious that the resident loser somehow managed to buy up her casino overnight, but she isn’t.
She does, however, step outside to greet Young-dal and his buddies, who are checking in to see how business is going. Evidently Young-dal also asked for a personal office, but his reaction is less than enthused.
Jang-soo knows that means something’s on his buddy’s mind, and he gapes at the plan to pull a con at Daejung casino.
Jung-hee heads to Yang-ha’s office, ignoring the staff who complain that she can’t go in without an appointment. She wastes no time to confront him, reminding Yang-ha how she told him not to toy with her anymore, and she sees his preferential treatment towards her as a kind of petty revenge.
Yang-ha rises at that and tells her that her prior work experience at an illegal underground casino doesn’t disqualify her from working with the VIP clients in this workplace. Everyone has a chance to climb up the career ladder, he says, “But will you settle for just working as a casino dealer?”
Someone without any goals lets opportunities slip past them, Yang-ha continues. He wasn’t joking around but rather giving her a chance: “You didn’t realize that because you don’t have a dream. Since you don’t have a dream, you keep meeting people you should avoid.”
Those words are hard to swallow, and even Yang-ha seems to waver at the sight of Jung-hee’s brimming tears. Brutally honest, but words Jung-hee needed to hear. His words linger in her head by the time she gets home, where aw, Young-dal bought more meat for the family.
Young-dal has clocked Jung-hee’s dispiritedness however, and tells little bro Byung-soo to check in on her. You’d think Young-dal has won some points with all the meat he’s bought for the kiddo, but Byung-soo tells “ajusshi” to stop liking his sister. Cute. (Speaking of brothers, where’s middle bro Byung-tae?)
Boss Min takes one of the Daejung casino managers out to dinner to finagle some history on past scams against the casino. There were a few instances in the past, but the culprits were eventually caught, and now the security system is virtually unbeatable.
She calls to inform Young-dal as much, but you know that when someone mentions that “no one” can break the system in dramaland, your rookie con artist hero will always be the one to do so anyway.
Jang-soo and Jailbreak conveniently drop by to ask Young-dal if he’s really going to go through with it. He will, and he’s positive that there must be some way.
Young-dal is called out to see Lady Kim the next day, and he dismisses her warnings that his dismissiveness will get him into trouble. He’d rather accept the consequences and cut ties with her cleanly, adding that his former days are behind him.
He grows increasingly frustrated by Lady Kim’s rants how liking Jung-hee will do nothing in his life, especially when she’s the direct heir of some sizeable plots of land. But Young-dal has had enough of people trying to get a piece of him, and says that he won’t mooch off of anyone else anymore—he’ll earn what he wants.
That’s pretty big talk for someone whose recent earnings are all thanks to some rich names, but Young-dal’s got his determination to stick to. But this is where Lady Kim’s niceties ends it seems, as she reminds him of the saying “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.”
“I’m going to destroy you,” she says, eyes unblinking. And we also know that whenever one character declares vengeance on someone else, they always see it through.
Jang-soo catches his father betting (and losing) at the baccarat table and drags him back to the office. At his father’s sobs over Young-dal’s success story, Jang-soo tells him that it was just a scam but emphasizes that it-totally-didn’t-happen-okay?
Once Young-dal and his buddies are alone, Jailbreak elaborates on the Hong Kong players’ scheme where they swiped a card before entering the VIP room, and then played it at the opportune moment. That technique requires a skillful sleight-of-hand, something none of them can do.
Young-dal supposes they’ll just have to use a deck that’s manipulated ahead of time so that it plays to their advantage. Getting their hands on a Daejung casino deck of cards will be relatively easy.
Young-dal outlines the casino layout to his buddies, explaining that they’ll change the cards in the restaurant near the VIP room. Madame Jang’s lackey spies on their scheming through his laptop, thanks to a bug he planted in Young-dal’s office earlier.
He shares his knowledge of what Young-dal’s been plotting these past few days with Madame Jang and Lady Kim. He’s got solid proof of their devious plans, and that should be enough to kick Young-dal out of the casino.
So Lady Kim and Madame Jang seek out the male casino manager (the same one whom Boss Min met. Does he know all the underground rich ladies?) to tip him off about Young-dal’s con. At the same time, Yang-ha orders a background check on Dong-soo.
Once news of Young-dal’s scam reaches Yang-ha’s ears, he does the interesting thing and chooses not to act. Instead, they’ll let Young-dal challenge their casino’s walls, and then they’ll catch him in the act.
Chairman Go is optimistic about Young-dal’s attempt whereas Boss Min is more pragmatic. They figure that they can bet on what happens to Young-dal. Top Dog is back in his parked van, and Young-dal and his boys head for Daejung.
He enters the VIP room, and who should be the dealer tonight but Jung-hee herself. Both parties try to hide their surprise while Yang-ha keeps watch from his office.
His door knocks just then—it’s Dong-soo all suited up, and Yang-ha greets him as a director. Guess Chairman Yoon gave him an actual high-ranking position in the company after all. Dong-soo’s first assignment is fast approaching, Yang-ha tells him.
Back at the VIP table, the baccarat game begins.
COMMENTS
So much for living a life without shame, especially when you’re about to cheat at a game in front of the one person you promised to live a decent life from now on. In that sense, I sympathize with Young-dal, who wanted to become someone deserving of Jung-hee (though of course she accepts him just as he is). Their budding romance is unbelievably adorkable and sweet, and it’s cool that Jung-hee said there’s no reason for him to live his life with his head bowed in shame when she’s no better than he is.
I was particularly sad when Young-dal was tasked to beat Dong-soo as a test of his loyalty, then heartbroken when Dong-soo allowed it. Despite Young-dal’s flip-flopping loyalties and running to whoever benefits his goal of the second the most, it was the first instance when I saw him actually feel remorseful about his future actions. His genuine apologetic expression was clearly written on his face, and it was painful to see him throw punch after punch. I do think we have Jaejoong to thank for teasing those emotions out of that scene, from Young-dal’s hesitation to his guilt, and also Lee Beom-soo for being dramaland’s best acting soundboard (and more. Always more when it comes to him, but the actor is severely underutilized in this role).
It was interesting that it was Yang-ha who challenged Jung-hee to boldly dream higher and not to settle for being a casino dealer. I’ve no doubt that his feelings towards her influenced his decision to give her some preferential treatment, but I like that he makes the professional distinction that her past doesn’t bar her from achieving bigger and greater things. I do wish that Jung-hee spoke up more in this exchange, since his words seemed more like a lecture which (inadvertently or not) diminished her character’s presence, but someone’s gotta tell the small-town girl that she isn’t confined to her present reality. And Yang-ha’s underlying insult that she deserves someone better than Young-dal comes through, too.
Even with the easy takeover of the underground casino, I’m glad that there’s someone in that joint who won’t take that lying down. Maybe I haven’t been giving the lackey enough credit, but why wouldn’t Madame Jang suspect Young-dal and install a bug in his office? At the very least, those suspicions led to Yang-ha being tipped off about Young-dal’s scheme against Daejung. By the end of this hour, I have no idea how Dong-soo’s involvement will come into play, but we’re about to witness all three brothers hopefully in the same room for the first time in this series. On the bright side, it only took nine hours for us (and twelve years for them) to get there!

It isn't as slow now and I could call the actors' acting a bit (or way more) than just decent. They are playing a big role in making this drama enjoyable. The male cast at least.

Young-dal made quite the jump from low-life proverbial loser to sudden gambling ace who takes over an underground casino with a 'sophisticated' scam...so much so that it kinda gave me whiplash ;P I knew the plot was moving slowly that there had to be a sudden "a ha!" moment with forward movement...but it feels a bit unrealistic to me, for now. Yeah, complaining of sudden plot movement when there are those out there who stopped watching this because the plot is moving slower than they'd like! ;P haha
But yeah, I get it...he wants to be accepted by Skunk Go so much, to recognized as a legitimate gangster - bravado and all. But the sudden amassing of "winning" talent could have been unfurled out better. I kinda rolled my eyes at the bit in ep8 where YD went to homeless former Chairman to glean some "winning tips." Hm, doesn't him being homeless prove anything? :/ But I guess he did get some pointers, to suddenly be good - right? haha.
I thought that Boss Min's heads-up to YD about SG's intentions were actually quite nice, for someone who's under his thumb. Hearing that made YD aware of SG's condescending words, which also likely amped him up further to get the scam done at the Yoon's casino -- although, how smart are YD's friends to set up their scam plan in the very same casino you just took over? Not smart.
That scene where SG goads YD to beat up Dong-soo to prove his loyalty was the scene of the ep...the back and forth gazes between YD and DS killed me! Yang-ha's sudden interest in DS also has me thinking that he's gonna figure out the brotherly connections soon...to which I'm cheering for!
I had figured Lady Kim to be a plot device for the beginning few episodes, so for her to continue to pop up in the underground casino bits gave me the inkling that she would play a bigger role later on down the line.
So it was kinda obvious that she would be scorned soon -- since there's only so much a woman can take when her younger man now has eyes for another. And of course she'll be on the path to vengeance against YD...that should serve a lesson: don't carry on with someone with means and dump her when you move on up -- she's gonna find some way to kick your azz later x/
So YD is gonna try to pull off the scam, when YH freakin' knows...? Of course the rookie whiz is gonna pull it off...only in dramaland, folks. I'm still patiently waiting for the brotherly reveal...it's already halfway through!

but it’s not what Young Dal suddenly became a gambling ace xD we know he cheated to win his biggest game.
then lucky also play a big role in poker. Young Dal barely won his preview poker game against Yang Ha.
i think it’s clear that he hasn’t become the most skilled player but his lucky is changing..of course it’s drama,it had to change at some point. xD

I meant it in a sarcastic way (forgot the quotation marks)...yes, of course, he won the takeover by cheating. His win over Yang-ha was not really by some inherent talent or skill either - it was just pure luck, since he went all in without even looking at his cards!
Obviously in a drama, a character's luck changes at a certain point...which, for Young-dal, is now. Guess I should've said gambling conman instead of ace ;)

Youngdal has been going smoothly both on his living and his relationship but it's not solid. He and Jun hee has mutual feeling for each other, but they are not approved of and the future seems dim for this couple. Youngdal doesn't have a decent job and his plan to turn his fate by earning GBT's recognization is just a temporal devotion.Young Dal doesn't have a long shot for his life. His current success which based on good luck doesn't carry him farther.
He needs a real thorough transformation to build a new life and pave for his relationship with Jun Hee.
So before this real transformation occur,he is still some low-life gangster.

DalHee is growing strong. I'm starting to really like this couple.
I literally cried at the beating scene. You could almost feel Youngdal's pain when he had to beat Dongsoo. A great scene indeed.
I like where the drama us going and the pace its taking. Like I am finally starting to get excited for the next episode.

I agree with you, I like the growing relationship between Young-dal and Jung-hee too --- DalHee is so cute!! :) I like how both Jaejoong and Baek Jin-hee bring the realistic awkwardness to life.
I thought it was super thoughtful of JH to say she is no better than YD...

On paper Jung-hee would just be so boring, but Baek Jin-hee really plays her right. And I'm really liking all their interactions, or maybe I'm just a sucker for a guy who actually confesses his feelings in the form of a 'you make me want to be a better person'-style admission.
And I like their awkwardness too, even if I fear their road ahead won't be smooth.

I believe that YD has had few ppl in his life who shows him kindness, caring or concern. The detective treating him that way must have meant more to him than he realises, esp. in contrast to Skunk whom he knows only wants to use him, even if it puts him in danger, and then discard him. His head tells him to get Skunk's approval as a means to allow him to rise up in the world, but his heart tells him otherwise when it involves hurting the upright detective in the process.

I think you're right. He grew up pretty much fending for himself, and it does clearly mean a lot to him when anyone, especially new people in his life, show that they care for him. We see this with Jung-hee's grandma taking care of him when he's sick and bringing him food - he's practically over the moon for such a simple thing. And yeah, he really doesn't want to actually hurt Dong-soo. Their eyes said it all in the warehouse scene, it was powerful.

I missed reading couple of recaps because of lack of time, and then was sure I wouldn't get future recaps if I didn't read previous ones.
I just took a chance with this, and I didn't have any trouble following the story or a feeling I missed anything !
That itself tells how slow the story is moving and yet I am invested in the characters . I don't know if its because of your recaps and the way you write or the story just feels solid ?
I don't have time to see, and I don't think I will be patient enough to see either. But I do wanna know what happens and how they end up.
Let's hope the story goes faster from here !

I think that the story is starting to get a faster pace now that the brothers have finally met each other. However, the things that I believe makes the show enjoyable are the characters development and the brothers confrontations/interactions which can be both heartwarming and heartbreaking... oe even scary at some point.
Also, DalHee love story gives the sweet feeling to the show. Lovestruck Youngdal is love~

How is that not a single gangster around Young-dal and Dong-soo not notice the exasperated expressions, little shake and nod exchange between the two in the warehouse scene? Do these people not understand basic human body language?
Also, Jerry's competency is pretty inconsistent for Young-dal to entrust him to overlook the private casino. I guess that says a lot about his gang of wannabe gangsters and ultimately him.
I literally face-palmed when Jang-soo told his dad about the scam because doesn't his dad fancy Madame Jang. Not that it matters now anyway as her lackey found out about their upcoming scam plans.
Basically I'm just about annoyed by everyone in this drama with the exception of Yang-ha(sigh, the underdeveloped arc!) and maybe Jung-hee. They're all incompetent to an extent like why isn't Chairman Go flipping his shit knowing that Dong-soo got away when his gangsters should've off-ed him right then and there instead of waiting until night time? And where did Young-dal go in the mean time?
Dong-soo is supremely annoying and omg when he hugged Shin-hye just that look in his eyes. Creepy as hell like he was possessed I laughed and cringed so hard at that scene. Also, I've never seen the actor who played him in any other work but does he always have this wide-eyed expression on because I swear throughout this whole drama that's the only expression he has. Sad, happy, angry, confused, shocked - ALL WIDE EYED.
I'm currently mostly invested in Yang-ha because there's just so much to him to unfold y'know like I'm still waiting to discover his character's fullest potential. Im Siwan plays him so well.
To a small degree Young-dal still intrigues me but I feel like his transition from small time thug to burgeoning gangster is a bit inorganic. I can't seem to point out exactly what it is that makes me feel unsatisfied about his character development.

In hindsight, it's the little things that get me. Small things that in dramaland normally warrants the viewer's suspension of belief so as to not distract one from the main plot. But I... I... can't...

I have issues with the series too, although different from yours. It's really testing one's patience, isn't it?
As for Dong Soo's actor, this role is using him terribly. It's actually the first time out of his latest few works where he has gotten such a flat and underwritten character.
I have watched 2/3 of the guy's work and almost all of his major roles and this is one of the worst in general, really.
The wide-eyed thing he does have, but when that is all he is asked/written to do, it's really not helping. I suggest you check out the first episode of 'History of the Salaryman'. You're going to have quite the surprise. Awesome series, that one.

I think my issue with the series is that they make such a big deal out of trivial things. It's so out of place a lot of times. This series has so much potential if done right like if it was fast paced and they don't dote or have 34545667 flashbacks of some trivial shite someone said while the person who goes through the flashback sits on their floor of poverty or chair of power.
Tbh, I could do without the romance shtick. I get that YD and YH are head over heels with JH but the decisions or hesitations in decision-making because of her is a bit unprofessional and childish. On YD's part, it's slightly more acceptable. The dude has had a rough childhood and it's understandable that he is who he is and him wanting to change after getting to know JH does make sense. Although when he fell for her he's only seen her like 3 times. Suspension of belief, Aryast, SUSPENSION OF BELIEF!
YH making some decisions based on his hatred and jealousy of YD as well as possessiveness of JH just doesn't bode well with me. Dude, you barely know JH what makes her so special?? He became infatuated the moment he saw her. She's pretty ordinary and like all the other girls as far as I'm concerned. And don't tell me it's her looks because I'm sure he knows girls who are just as beautiful as her. His daddy-issues and lack of a mother figure probably comes into play but I wished that they touched on that more and drove home the point that he's suffering from it severely but all we're getting is a half assed "I wanna please you but I want your attention even tho you've been distant" and "now's my chance to prove to myself to you".
Other than that, YH still is the most dynamic character compared to the rest - which isn't saying much. I've got to add that plot-wise, the key still lies in YD. I want to see his journey to redemption/destruction/success or whichever because at this point I'd love to see more complexity but from the looks of it I'm probably hoping for too much.
DS can suck it. I'm not even gonna bother with his character. Can do without Jangsoo, his dad and Jerry's "comedic" scenes too.

I agree that they are focusing on too many things and mostly not the interesting ones. As you say, Yang Ha's actions make no sense when we have been shown so little of what goes on in his head and he has barely spoken to "the woman he's doing it all for" a few times. Which is why I am also not liking this turn of his.
Suspension of disbelief can only go so far. We've been focusing on so many characters, most of them useless at the moment, focusing on slice-of-life scenes while there are bigger things waiting to happen. You can't throw in a revenge plot and family secrets and then spend half this thing focused on people playing cards, angsting and barely getting anywhere.
If we had rich and detailed character development and juicy subplots and side characters, I'd love the whole delay of the main deal, but we don't. So it feels empty.
The good news is, we are finally getting somewhere now that Dong Soo boarded the revenge choo choo and Yang Ha lost it over his complexes. And with Yeong Dal now getting a good taste of what this life means and hopefully getting out of the mentality of a 13-year-old, we'll get some nice man-pain from Jae Joong.
Just leave your higher brain functions at the door and enjoy whatever you can. Hold on to the things that are good. That is currently my game plan. I want to watch this for Lee and need to for my work anyway.

Yea the series has just started to pick up towards the end of episode 10 so now I have a reason to stick around even though the reason of conflict is beyond trifling. *exasperated breathing*
For work? Are you writing a recap/review of your own as well or running a LBS fansite? :)
Anyway, I'll admit watching it because of Jaejoong since this will be his last drama in awhile as he'll be enlisting within this year. Became a fan due to his recent solo album albeit this being the first drama of him that I've watched.

@Aryast
I don't run anyone's fansite (not that obsessed with any particular person), but I am writing for HanCinema at the moment.
Personally, Jae Joong was my biggest worry before this started. And now he has turned into this show's biggest asset. They might not be using their best actor well, but at least, thank goodness, they are using their main well.
But would I have come near this series in the first place or kept watching if not for work and Lee? No. As much as I like Jae Joong, he alone wouldn't have managed to keep me through it.
But I am still glad he took the role, since he will get good offers post-army, because his role is showcasing his improvement. His own work is good, even if the show isn't doing too hot. I'm still undecided on whether it was good for Lee to sign up, but we'll see.
And at least we'll suffer a bit less now that the plot is finally going where the goal was. Revenge is a dish best served half-baked? :P

Dude, you barely know JH what makes her so special?? He became infatuated the moment he saw her.
idk if it is infatuation so much as plain old possessiveness sometimes. He was probably initially intrigued by her working at the underground casino and more intrigued after she rejected him.
Some guys just like to pursue what they can't have, and it looks like Yang-ha is going about that in his own way. Even so, it's not a super solid basis for an infatuation but it's at least slightly based on her personality.

You are being a bit too harsh on LBS. The guy has proven many times his worth as an actor and this is not an exception. I laughed at the wide-eyed part though xD
I was intrigued about Yangha at the beginning but he is turning so evil that I just lost the simpathetic feel I had with him because of his past.
I'm still looking forward or good hearted bad boy Youngdal. He can be bad at times, but he is never cruel.

Sorry about seeming harsh on LBS. The thing is I'm basing my observation on this drama - the only drama I've seen him in so far - and it's pretty bad although I think it's the depiction of the character by the writer that's the problem and not the actor. I've received and read several comments of how he's a good actor but not even he can survive such badly written character.
I don't mind Yangha (or anyone else for that matter) being evil or the baddie since I'm in it for the (hopefully) good narrative rather than going in to root for one of the characters. What I do mind, however, is WHY Yangha turned into a baddie. I just can't accept it if he didn't have a solid reason for hating YD. Hating YD out of jealousy because of a girl he barely knows just doesn't cut it for me.

I think Yongha turns baddie doesn't because he is jealousy but because he was defeated by this low-life thug Young Dal twice, one for the game, one for the girl. His strong feeling of shame drove him insane.
Plus,Yongha is taught to be a manipulator and always the winner by his foster father. He has no pity on the inferiors, and he likes to eliminate his enemy regardless of the means.
He was raised by the killer of his father, most probably on purpose, but he doesn't realize it.How tragic is that?

As a big fan, I admit this is the first time I have seen him too helpless to salvage the character. Even he probably has no idea what Dong Soo is thinking, doing and why. 24 years of work on this man and this series managed to break him. It's an achievement of sorts, I guess.
The fact that in most of his scenes, Dong Soo is angry, angsting or throwing information at us is not helping. Even his romance was tossed aside and quickly wrapped up.
I am sure Yang Ha would get the same treatment if not for his involvement in the main love line, which has now become his sole motivation and descriptor too. Or at least they present it as such. It's not up to us to guess what everyone's deal is. It's up to the writer to convey it. And he's not doing it.

Young Dal and Dong Soo scenes together are always great and touching. even without words, the deep connection between them is strong.
kudos to Jaejoong who is primarily responsible for this, he really got a good chemistry with Lee Bum Soo and Siwan.
Yangha is such manipulator and he is having success in manipulating Junghee

Its funny how Jaejoong consistently has better with chemistry with his male co-stars. It was similar in Dr Jin with Jin Yi Han. However the Dalhee couple is growing on me, I can see the character's complementing each other well.

yeah, in scenes with Dong-soo especially, he positively crackles. The warehouse scene this ep really got to me, those two communicate so well even without words that I could easily feel what Young-dal felt in that moment.
With Jung-hee, he's got a totally different side, he genuinely wants to be better and it makes him softer around her. I feel like he's that way around Dong-soo too in some ways, he doesn't want to be the bad guy and sometimes just looks incredibly boyish and in need of a hyung.

The warehouse scene really utilised Jaejoong's eyes, you could feel his conflict and I didn't find the slow motion too distracting. The drama has really developed their relationship since YD had to call DS to save him, I just can't wait for them to realise they're actually brothers. I'm very curious as to how they're going to make the siblings find out as there doesn't really seem to be a link as of yet.
YD always has to act like a hyung and alpha with Jang Soo and Jerry so its nice to see him lean on DS a little.
YD is definitely softer with Jung Hee and her family, which makes sense knowing his background. I also enjoy all the quips Jung hee's brother makes!

but I’m pointing and praising mainly JaeJoong in it bcus he interacts with LBS & Siwan and still get a great chemistry with both of them. YoungDal has great scenes with his two brothers..Young-Soo is still the most touching in my heart though.

I love JJ's subtle changing expressions when he takes JH home, and she tells him no need to feel inferior in her presence; after she turns to go inside, he stands there alone, staring at her back; his face lights up, warms up, shows that he is touched, determined, and all things good, all within 10 secs!
From now on when ppl say that idols can't act, I'm going to remember this scene and JJ's myriad expressions, and know there are exceptions.

I agree with you on JJ's acting. He's certainly improved quite a lot even tho in some scenes of the drama it's a bit hit and miss but most of the time he's solid. That shifty eyes he does when he's unsure of himself or the situation is a nice touch.
I've gotta admit that this whole while I'm apprehensive about his acting as it's quite hit and miss as I've mentioned but I just saw ep10 (which we will discuss in the next recap heh) and there's a scene where I was sold that he's getting a good grasp of the art and will continue to grow as an actor.

Having seen most of his works, I can safely say this is a huge improvement. He is not a raw talent type of actor, but he is someone with enough talent to build upon and clearly hardworking enough to get there.
While he still does have his shaky bits (no, not those, get your mind out of the gutter!), they are far fewer than in the past. He has gone from a few hits among many misses to a few misses among mostly hits, in 'Triangle'.
And that is great and I hope he gets the opportunities to develop his skills further. Hopefully in better works next time.

I don't really like the word "improvement" to define an actor's performance. Mainly because it's way too subjective, specially when you talk about idols.
Jaejoong as an actor was never bad. I saw him in his first attempt at k-drama acting in "Protect The Boss" without knowing he was an idol and I could totally buy his character. Of course he has grown a lot since then, but still he was good even then.
Jaejoong here is doing great. It's not just about "improvement". He is good.

It's always about improvement. With all actors. Because people evolve and most actors have flaws. There are things even veterans could improve on and still work on through their work. It's just what we find improvement is different for each individual.
If I say he is good, I am saying I found all of his previous performances just as good as this one and I did not. Of course it's all subjective, I am one individual. We all are. We can't possibly speak for All The People. I use this word to give credit to his current performance and the hard work he is doing to make it good. To me, he has improved.
You said it too. "He has grown a lot since then". I said the same thing using another word.

Is it just me, or is everyone either seemed to have such high expectations for this kdrama? Or are picking it apart to see why it has low ratings?
I'm just cruising along to see what is going on.
What I got so far.
YangHa is pretty straightforward. He is a chaebol, groomed to take over business, he has a lot of pride. The reason why he hates YD so much and obsession with JungHee all has to do with his pride. JungHee so far is the only girl that isn't fawning over him. Not throwing herself at him. Yet she's being nice to a 'low life'. His ego is big, he defeated YD in front of a pretty girl once, but she rejected him, yet then she becomes all smily with that low life that he defeated. Then that low life defeated him.
For a spoiled brat, his hate for YD is justify. He wants to show Jung Hee that she has no future with him. He wants to be right. He should always be right. That's his personality. And that's used to be, or still is kdramaland 'main lead' (surprising to see him as a 2nd lead though). So I'm seeing some viewers are falling madly over him, which crack me up. Because can you imagine a pretty homeless dude being this creepy obsessive? Everyone will just call the police on him.
YoungDal... He found an inspiration in his life, which is a pretty normal girl. His love for her is that of first love type of thing. I truly believe this is his first love. He doesn't know how to change his life the right way. He isn't educated, so it make sense, he is looking for short term and not long term success, but circumstances will make him grow, and he is already growing. I think I'm already seeing the foreshadowing for this character... he is called a dog, and right now the dog is being cornered. He will definitely bite back, but will he make out of that corner alive?
Jung Hee, Oh Jung Hee... pretty candy girl without a life long goal. She needs one, I hope she gets one, I hope she left both YD and YH. Focus on your life, girl. And honestly, if she goes to YH, that would be so off from her personality so far. Better if she left YD, but also rejected YH so he can get a wakeup call, that there will be people that aren't into him, and that he's not always right.
Dong Soo is most grounded, of course there are flaws, but he seemed to know what he wants. His focus, main focus is taking down GBT, he has his reason, it isn't shown to us, but we get the gist of it based on the two bgs. Searching for his brothers is also a focus, but it's not the main because searching for someone missing for 20 years is tough. DS needed something to get him by day by day, and it's his job. Now he has YD to look after because he implanted him with GBT.
the plotholes are small imo. I've seen worst, and it is a kdrama, so there isn't much for me to expect but just watches as the story goes. The writer isn't perfect, but he's consistent at least, and seemed to know where he's going with this, the cast helped a lot in this. This...

I kind of like watching Yang-ha as a character, even if I think he's crazy inside and any sane girl should run far away from him he has his moments. I do agree that he's totally the usual first lead type though. And I think Im Siwan is playing him pretty well, in fact all the brothers are doing a good, even great job. They make their characters feel layered and complex, it's never as straightforward as one of them being the good guy or being all bad. That scene with the beating between Jaejoong and Lee Beom-soo.....UFF.
As for the plot....it's slow but at least there is a plot. I'm grateful for that, after seeing what some other recent dramas are doing with their stories. And things actually seem to be moving in this episode, faster than usual.

Oh, and lastly, I thought that was a dick move of Yang Ha to Jung Hee. Like, dude, who is he to tell her that she don't deserves this and that? He isn't with her and is already dictating her life. If you strip away Yang Ha's daddy power, I wondered if he can survive by himself.
But then YD is so bad that everyone around Jung Hee is telling her not to date YD. No one is giving this kid a chance, no one except Jung Hee and DongSoo, but he care more for JH, if JH listen to everyone then I think that will be his turning point.
I find it interesting that both Jung Hee and YD is getting the talk today, regarding their dreams. And from both of their admire or ex. But YD is holding on firm to his dream and how he goes about it, even through cheating the system, his dream require cheating though. While Jung Hee finally realizing that she needed one.
What is YangHa dream though? While he talks about dreams with others, he seemed to be in a dream that he doesn't realized. And seemed to not have his own goal.

I think that the problem with Yangha is that he has lived for so long trying to satisfy his father that he he couldn't get another dream. He hates him, but he lives for him.
YD on the other hand, had to live and fight for himself only. He did it all alone and in world that is too dark. He has learned to live the dark way, so he naturally got dark dreams... but then Junhee appeared. A turning point in his life.

But I like the DalHee couple a lot, they have a totally different feel - he's just so **hearts in eyes** mode when it comes to her, and it's really sweet and warm. To be honest at the beginning of the show I prefer YH with JH, because I couldn´t sense any chemistry between YD and JH, but because I loved YD I forced myself to like the couple because I have always wanted him to be happy. Then the Dalhee couple started to have more scenes together, and that with the various interactions between YD and JH´s family, I started to like more the couple xD And just now, I can´t describe my feeling with this couple, I just love it! I love them together. In their date YD was just soooooo cute and I liked JH´s honest smile and the fact that she defends him a lot.

I've always thought Young-dal is a really interesting character because it's not often we get a hero who's morally compromised from the start, and whose journey involves yet more grey areas of him doing wrong for his own good. (Dong-soo is that way too, but out of straight-up revenge).
With Yang-ha, we have the straight-up desire for control lurking behind his polished exterior, and we see that he doesn't take loss of control well at all.
With Young-dal, the character is written in such a way that he lives like trash because it's the only way he knows - he blackmails his lover, cheats at cards, plans to become a gangster - and in his head, at those points in time, it makes perfect sense.
He's been all about survival and fighting dirty, and we see that continue here. But there's still a desire to belong somewhere and be better, which is what we see in his relationship with Jung-hee's halmoni, Jung-hee herself, Dong-soo, and in a twisted way, his whole become a gangster scheme. He genuinely means it when he tells Jung-hee he wants to not live an embarrassing life, and to live well, but the problem is that his understanding of living well is different from hers. And yeah, that last scene was impactful for bringing him face to face with her, about to cheat her after making the confession that he wanted to be about more than that.

I'm sure that this is going to become a bigger problem soon. Youngdal only knows how to play and gain dirty. The success through not-so-much legal ways is the only success he knows. I doubt he has even considered a different life than that.

Which is what makes it so sad. He can't even fathom the idea of going straight, his idea of rising in the world and becoming 'someone' is to go to a gangster.

Finally catching up. Thank you for the recaps.
First, I am not a Korean drama fan. I don't deal well with Kdrama logic, I can't sit through all the dragging flashback scenes, plus the frequency of those grown-up women crying really tests my nerves. I watch this drama because of Jaejoong, and though I still FF some scenes, this drama doesn't feel like a punishment as Dr.Jin once upon a time did. On the contrary, I quite like how the writer and director execute it. The abundant characters and leisurely pace sometimes fool me into thinking I'm reading a novel, not watching a drama, and that's a plus for me personally. The characters are real enough for me to empathize, and the situations they are in are not WTF-just-happen-how-and-why-?!? but entertaining enough to keep me intrigued. I do think, however, they could do without all those repetitive flashbacks that are eating my time and patient.
Youngdal's life isn't one ordinary people like you and me can imagine. No schooling won't do as much damage if you have a family to teach you right and wrong. Kids learn by observing whatever happens around them. He was 8 years old when he started living as a beggar, a stealer and later on a thug and a gigolo. Him plotting to off Dongsoo and cheating his ways to Vegas didn't sit well with me initially. But I know I can't question his morality when he never has any clear idea about morality himself, and expecting him to change in a short period is not reasonable. Regardless, we can see some character development as he bonds with Dongsoo, grandma, chubby bro, and Junghee. When he commanded his underlings to battle Dongsoo, he was in charge and could have stopped the situation anytime had it went haywire. However, when he was the one being ordered to throw those punches, he was even ready to dismiss Go's order regardless of the consequence. The boy is pitiful, so eager to climb up the social status he doesn't notice he's changing until the moment it hits him. I really like this type of protagonist, who isn't all that but who is getting there.
Dongsu's constant tantrums annoyed me at first. Him quitting the force must be the best thing happened to the police's human resource department. But his character is getting more mature/ age-appropriate in recent episodes and that's a good sign. I FF his romantic scenes but I get a gist of what is going on reading the recaps and comments. Dongsoo-Youngdal scenes are my favorite, even better when there are soju and mocking, but throwing punches and bloody teeth are totally fine too. I can't wait for the reunion moment, which would be yummy considering they already behaving like brothers, but I bet Youngdal doesn't "miss" the big brother who "abandoned" him like Dongsoo yearns for his little brothers.
Yangha is an interesting character as we are yet to know if he'll develop fully into a powerful villain or just stay a petty, jealous son of a powerful (?) villain. I don't think his...

I don't think his anger toward Youndal is unjust. Growing up being insecure and approval-seeking to the point that he's psychologically impaired, Yangha would be obsessed with being superior to everyone around him and winning every competition. Low-life Youngdal defeated him a few times and thus cut a bunch of his sane nerves in the process. What I don't buy is the attention he gives Junghee. If this is just a game because she rejected him then it makes sense. But if he genuinely cares for her, then … huh? A love triangle just for the sake of a love triangle is very disappointing.
Junghee's trajectory is a bit underdeveloped (it's a man-pain drama anyway). I am thankful she hasn't cried yet (but I guess it will come eventually) and she actually verbally punches her bullies. Junghee definitely feels something for Youngdal as well but both hesitate to take it further at the moment. If she didn't have to support her grandma and brothers, being romantically involved with the town trashy gangster wouldn't be so morally challenging, especially seeing how handsome, and hot, and adorable, and caring, and sensitive, and puppy-eyed, and protective, and many things the gangster is around her that he is not around others.
Shinhye is too boring from the start that I FF most of her scenes … until she becomes unprofessional and unethical … which is unredeemable in my eyes. Dear Writer, please fix this character.
The villains: :D They are sooooo comical they aren't intimidating at all. Yoon the cabbage patch doll (whoever made me saw this, thank you for giving such good laugh every single time Yoon the doll showed up) and Go the gangster skunk are like children trying to cover up their dirty hands when sitting at a dining table. I am in no way forgiving them for the father murder, but at least they seem to know what they did would bring terrible consequences.
As a Jaejoong fan, I have felt very conflicted every time he took an acting project. I did not think he could be an actor, seeing how self conscious he was in front of the camera. I watched some of his scenes in Dr.Jin too, and no matter what people said, I did not take his character Kyungtak seriously, especially when he wielded his sword 0TL. Jaejoong never controlled his body, arms, and feet correctly, be it dancing or acting. It's adorable if he is an idol, but it counts against him in acting.
But this man proved me wrong. He really molds himself into this lowlife character, convincingly, but not yet effortlessly. I still spot some random fidgeting, but that comes as a price for being his fan, my eyes are glued to his smallest movements. Jaejoong's growth is not a dismissible one, and I hope he will have even better chances to grow as a real actor in the future.

You make a great point about Yang-ha, he takes Jung-hee's positive feelings towards Young-dal as an added insult for exactly that reason - one, Young-dal as a lowlife thug has beaten him at cards and also has the thing he has been unable to win so far, which is Jung-hee's friendship/positive feelings.
As for Jaejoong.....I've never even laid eyes on him before this (not a big kpop fan, never seen any of his previous dramas) so I'm impressed by how good he is. From my perspective, which is as someone who watches dramas very closely, there are no gaps in his performance now - he had a couple of weak spots in episode 3-4, but as a drama fan, I think his performance is solid and he's even doing a good job of showing the various facets and layers of Young-dal. Which is not easy, when you consider that Young-dal is such a complex character.

Yang-ha already showed the baby bro common trait: "Me biggest in the family! Me have everything! Or else!" :D
As a Jaejoong's fan of 8 years, I have watched everything he's in, but this is the first time I'm taken aback by his potential and will-power to tackle acting. You have no idea how proud I feel when drama viewers praise my only idol. So thank you, sincerely. ^^
I guess I'm still seeing weird emotion conveying (not only from Jaejoong, but from other actors/actresses here as well) is due to not watching enough K-dramas and the obvious cultural difference.

And omg, yes, Chairman Cabbage Patch Doll. I hate whoever put that in the comments, now all I feel when I look at him is a desire to pinch his cheeks. I really can't take him seriously any more.

@Ivy Your comments are both insightful and funny, thanks for the treat =)
I was nodding non-stop as I read your take on all the characters, but this part is a real gem: "he’s psychologically impaired, Yangha would be obsessed with being superior to everyone around him and winning every competition. Low-life Youngdal defeated him a few times and thus cut a bunch of his sane nerves in the process."
Exactly my thoughts! I can easily imagine him hating on Young-dal for hurting his pride alone. The Jung-hee factor is like adding fuel to fire, salt to wound. Plus, he was already having mental problems, let's not expect him to behave like a chill, rational adult that he isn't. He might say really sane stuffs, like the importance of having a life goal and not to gamble recklessly, but it doesn't mean he necessarily has good control of his emotions when he no longer has the upper hand.

Thanks for liking my comment without pointing out the wrong spellings and grammar that come with it (*patience, nothing is eating my patient, I hope).
"He might say really sane stuffs, like the importance of having a life goal and not to gamble recklessly"
I guess this is the way people mask their weakness/ insanity. Why couldn't he be more honest like Joker and draw all over his face? He might get absolute attention from his daddy and add to their family doll collection then.
I am usually a lurker but reading some people impose their ideas on how show should be here and on soompi makes me want to come out and defend the writer. I cannot judge writer-nim until the last episode is over, but right now, I think he is doing a decent job. This drama is nowhere near the top shows I've watched, but the plot holes are small and forgivable. It gives off a mature feeling and its characters are given enough room to grow without being superficial (with the exception of Shinhye who I skip and cannot comment on). Triangle doesn't go into the cliche revenge drama plot (yet?) and I like it this way.

*shakes fist at them damn patient-eating flashbacks*
Must admit I've done my share of ranting in soompi (under a different id) about the show's lack of abilities to gain higher rating, only because I lament the fact that more people aren't watching the show and the good collective acting in it. This series doesn't suffer from poor quality or lack of basic logic that's for sure, but I guess some of us tiger fans (hee) are just greedy and want it to do better, esp. rating-wise =P

:D I don't mind people thinking Triangle suck and tuning in for the roller-coaster that is Doctor Stranger. Everyone is entitled to choose how to be entertained. I'm just a little bugged that some viewers think the writer fail at telling a revenge story when he might be telling a different story with revenge as a subplot. Didn't Dong-soo hate Go's guts even before he found out about his father murder?
Anyway I'm sure you're a better drama fan than I am for wanting this show to do better ratting-wise. ^^

Except when it comes to Shin-hye's professional ethics lol. Her love line is so snoozeworthy. Still, this is no Doctor Stranger and hews to some kind of logic at least. The drama was kind of slow till just this week, too, I'm glad to see the pace picked up.

I am still freaked out by Lady Kim's obsession with Youngdal ...like wake up woman! He could pass as your son... plus he used you just for money and maybe s*x.
I don't even know why I still like someone who does so many despicable actions but I do. Youngdal is making a fool of myself xD maybe I'm just like Lady Kim ._. oh~ the bad-but-good-boys' charms~
Thanks for the recap gummimochi! <333

yes, he's just so likeable despite fitting every criteria for being scum of the earth. I'm turning into one of those girls who legitimately believes that 'under it all, he has a good heart' (and he does).

I like the drama and don't feel that the story is slow. The scene when YD hits DS was sad since I could feel how upset YD at having to do that.
I am excited for episode 10 since finally all three brothers are going to be together.

I'm just confused as to why the gangsters were still in the exact same position come nightfall, and why Young Dal wasn't with them. After all his hesitation, it doesn't seem like abandoning them to murder Dong Soo (which was the orders they'd been given...several hours ago...) would be his course of action...feels so lazy...haha :P
