Park Shi-yeon courted for Greatest Marriage
by awcoconuts
Her short hiatus may already be over: Actress Park Shi-yeon (Nice Guy) is being courted to return to television in the newest addition to TV Chosun’s fall lineup, Greatest Marriage. After weathering a drug abuse controversy during most of 2013, this is the first we’ve heard of a possible comeback, and if she takes this miniseries, it would be her first role in nearly two years.
In review, actresses Park Shi-yeon, Lee Seung-yeon, and Jang Mi-in-ae were accused of the illegal usage of propofol, the drug that famously killed Michael Jackson, in March of last year. In November, they were given a suspended sentence of eight months of jail time, which they could avoid by fulfilling the terms of their two years of probation without any further incident. They also paid monetary fines. While Jang opted to appeal, Park and Lee accepted their sentences, and as a result were placed on KBS and MBC celebrity ban lists.
Since then, Park Shi-yeon has stayed out of the limelight, giving birth to her first child (she was pregnant as the trial went on) and spending time with her family. Those who remember Park from the variety show Family Outing know she has dealt with injuries and a surgery in the past, and during the trial her attorney argued that the propofol was for medicinal purposes. I won’t venture a guess as to what really happened, but I’m glad that the actress’s life and career appear to be getting back on track.
She’s been offered the lead in Greatest Marriage, about a glamorous anchorwoman who chooses to become a single mother and who spirals into despair. It will follow four other couples from the dating stage to married life, but will “differentiate itself from the tired material by offering a woman who wants to have a child but rejects marriage as the central character.”
While I am happy that Park has received an offer, it might be too soon to get back to work, as the controversy still seems fresh to the public. Then again, perhaps she fears that the offers will become fewer and far between (a valid concern). She is said to be considering seriously, so we should hear news of her decision shortly.
Greatest Marriage will be written by Go Yoon-hee (Love Exposure) and directed by Oh Jong-rok (Twelve Men in a Year, Daemul). It will air on cable network TV Chosun in September and will head into production once the cast has been finalized.

I'm a fan, she has grown so much since My Girl, so I hope she makes the best choice for her career and self.

She's a good actress, Nice Guy amply proved that, it's a shame to let the scandal end her career so young.
I hope she makes a comeback even if the Korean netizen crowd have elephant like memories when it comes to drug usage, even minor ones (some of them probably need to be told that Robert Downey Jr. aka possibly the most successful and beloved actor in Hollywood today, was a drug addict less than a decade ago).

We, of course, do not know the full details but I am always hopeful that when someone derails themselves or is derailed, that they get back on track. I wish her good luck with this if she takes it.
I did find the description a bit ironic...
"She’s been offered the lead in Greatest Marriage, about a glamorous anchorwoman who chooses to become a single mother and who spirals into despair. "
Let's hope if she takes it that the character is allowed to get back on track as well. That may help her personally as well as her public image.

While I personally don't think it's too soon, taking an illegal drug whether doctor applied or not is criminal.

"taking an illegal drug whether doctor applied or not is criminal".
I'm not challenging this, just wondering: is it illegal or criminal? I often think of the term 'criminal' as committing a crime against someone else, with the intention of harming someone else. I don't see drug dependency in the same light.
Yes, addiction is unhealthy and a disease, and can lead to criminal acts in order to feed the dependency. But is addiction itself criminal? Maybe because I'm in the US, I tend to view addicts with a more sympathetic light, over here if an addict was caught feeding their addiction, they are more likely to end up in Rehab, where they can receive treatment, than in jail (barring the case that they actually committed other criminal acts).
The reason I bring this up is the harsh, punitive, attitude which I perceive that S. Korea takes with it's celebrities when they have been found out to abuse drugs: Park Shi-yeon is one, and Joo ji hoon is another. They may have very valid reasons for doing so, but I would think that sympathy and understanding would go along way to helping these folks regain their footing to become healthier individuals once more.

Yeah, but how does the drug problem there compare to the States? It seems they're better for it. Maybe harsher consequences can be a deterrent in the first place. Many abusers keep going back to drugs knowing they'll only be sent to rehab.

I also enjoyed her performances in coffee house and innocent man unfortunately for her "some people" where unhappy with the ending to coffee house personally i thought the ending fit what was shown during the series
she was also in the korean equivalent of basic instinct if memory serves called "gan gi nam" in 2012
with regard to this project i think she should decline the offer and find something else to revive her career
this type of story amounts to nothing more than a morality play

I really loved her in everything I have seen her in so far: family outing, innocent man, my girl and the slingshot. She has this charisma that attracks audience to feel the character that she plays.
I had no idea about the drug usage but it is great to see her coming back on television.

Propofol is normally used as a anesthesia for certain medical procedures. These actresses used the drug illegally. This a the drug which killed Michael Jackson. If she used it for medicinal purposes, I'm sure that there would have been proper medical records. So why couldn't she prove it instead of getting a suspension?
She has been under the radar because of the drug scandal. Too soon. Just wondering.

She took a plea to avoid jail time. This is a serious crime in most countries including the US. You can not go to your local pharmacy and pick up the med. Its given in very few instances. The drug has serious side effects. I am a health care professional. If people really look at her appearance in Nice Guy one would notice something was off. Addiction is a major problem world wide and I hope she got the appropriate medical treatment. Everyone deserves forgiveness too.

Missed her. Watched Nice Guy and was just wowed by her acting, and that face, and that body. Haha. Just right when my friend and I started fangirling over her and watching her old dramas/movies, the scandal broke out ):
Oh well, at least she paid for her wrongdoings and hopefully she won't do it again because it may harm herself. And I hope she gets better treatment for her injured back - she has a little angel now, better take care of her health so she can take care of her! Hehe, looking forward to her comeback, it's been long enough!

Yes. One station actually bans HOT songs because of Tony An's illegal gambling.
MC Mong is ban, Joo Ji Hoon is ban because of his drug scandal, and Park Shi Hoo is ban b/c of his rape scandal. And there are more. Apparently, if you caused a disruption w/in the country w/ your scandal, you are ban.
Also, don't forget that KBS also ban Kpop songs for absurd reasons. One rookie girl band had their mv banned due to the poor video quality/shaking technique. Akdong's Musician had their 'Galaxy' song banned b/c it has too much 'Galaxy' word in the lyrics and will confuse the audiences w/ the Galaxy phone. C-R-A-Z-Y KBS!

I hope PSY will think what is the best for her at this moment. But then, this channel are cable and not many people will tune in.
I wonder if Yoon Eun Hye been offered this role too. But looks like the production thought of PSY first.

I know it will be so awkward but I love Eric Mun since Que Sera Sera period, so I wish one day they'll have chance to work together in the movie or drama. I trust their professionalism. Happy for her back on drama land again.
