My Sassy Girl aiming for double revival on big and small screens

Rom-com classic My Sassy Girl wasn’t merely a box-office hit, it propelled its two leads to stardom, bolstered (or maybe even kickstarted) the spread of Hallyu when it was still in its incipient stages, and set the bar for rom-coms to follow. So it’s no surprise that there have been numerous attempts at spin-offs, remakes, and adaptations in the 13 years since it released in 2001 (there were U.S. and Japanese versions, neither of which made much of a dent).

Now we’re looking at not one but two potential (and separate) projects: one a movie sequel, another a drama adaptation.

The movie sequel, My Sassy Girl 2, is a horrible idea that I hope dies a fiery death before production gets underway, because you cannot recast Cha Tae-hyun but leave out Jeon Ji-hyun, and paint the movie as a follow-up to the original movie wherein our hero falls in love with a second sassy girl (to be played, possibly, by idol starlet Victoria). This is a travesty in many, many ways and whoever thought it up should be fired. And slapped.

News of the movie production broke a couple months ago, but now we also have fresh reports of a second version that sounds more like the original movie reimagined in drama format. The announcement did not disclose details of the plot, merely stating that production house RaemongRaein (producers of Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Ad Genius Lee Tae-baek) has been planning this drama adaptation for a couple years; in 2012 the drama script earned runner-up status in an open scriptwriting competition. The producers had hoped to prepare the series for a late 2013 airing, but production stalled.

However, as none of us need to be told, the insane popularity of You From Another Star recently reignited interest in Jeon Ji-hyun and the movie, giving this drama project the push it needed. Now producers hope to get the drama ready for an early 2015 broadcast.

Aghhh, I don’t know if I like this idea. I’m less averse to this drama idea than the movie (which should be shot and buried, stat), but we’ve seen hit movies mangled in drama remakes (ahem, Level 7 Civil Servant) and I’d rather they just leave My Sassy Girl to enjoy its place in Chungmuro history and our collective memories. Don’t mess with a good thing!

Ugh. No no no no no to that movie. If there's a 2, bring back CTH and JJH. And better to just write another great script instead of doing an extended epilogue of the first movie.

As for the drama, I was gonna be excited until you mentioned L7CS. LOL why??? Why did you have to remind us, JB?

Y'know, maybe they should change something up. Reverse the roles? The guy gets to be the quirky, moody, time-travel obsessed hero this time around.

I think just like you!! just forget it production company!!!don't ever again think about it!!! specially if they are going to recast Cha tae-hyun but not Jeon ji-hyun!!
I remember SECRET Sunhwa once said she would like to play Jeon ji-hyun character in this movie, and I told myself she looks like her but she better never think about it, cause that's impossible they make a remake!!! what I'm saying is, just don't make a remake!!:D

Sunhwa looks like a mix of Kim Tae-hee and JJH (but more KTH).

She has comedic ability but more in the variety sense (her acting still needs work).

A drama reworking I can kinda see if they get the script and the right actors (tho, I don't see how the essence of the plot can carry a 16-18 ep drama' maybe more of a short drama - 6-10 eps), but a sequel with a diff. cast will likely be no better than the sequels to films like for that of "My Tutor Friend."

And I wouldn't mind a remake with new actors-- but producers, please: it's all or nothing. >__< Recast both Jeon Ji-hyun and Cha Tae-hyun, or just come up with a brand new cast instead.

This movie is TOO HUGE and deserves to be just left alone. I highly doubt any sequel or a drama adaptation could ever live up to the movie. I'm all for another CTH and JJH reunion on TV (Happy Together was what, 1998/1999?) but as different characters please.

I dunno... I kinda like the drama adaptation idea if they don't shove it in our faces that this is Sassy Girl drama version and that every character is exactly how it was in the movie except with different faces. If they do more like an inspired version, I think it would be kinda neat provided they can cast someone with as much spunk and 'sass' - duh! lol - as JJH.

As for the movie sequel... If it happens, I'll just pretend I was living under a giant rock until everything fizzes away.

The drama version sounds less potentially disastrous than casting anyone to take Jeon Ji-hyun's place in a Sassy Girl movie......but I don't actually want either of these to happen at all.

JJH was iconic in that role, and even more impressive considering she was only 19 at the time (it was also my first ever encounter with k-ent/Hallyu)....any actress who even goes near that role has a massive pair of shoes to fill. I don't even think it's possible.

Although admittedly, I tried watching it the other day and I could NOT get into it. I thought it was terrible, plot-wise at least so maybe it hasn't aged well? Or it could just not be my kind of humour. I was disappointed tho - I was hoping to like it.

I could never stand that movie, but even I'll say that a remake without JJH can only be a disaster waiting to happen. And replacing her with an idol starlet... hahahaha.... Well, maybe that'll make some people realise that you can't just cast an idol in place of an A-list (in terms of quality!) actress.

Funny, the wife and I didn't finish watching it.

We did watch Cha Tae-hyun in Highway Star and Scandle Makers and enjoyed both of those, but My Sassy Girl fell flat for whatever reason.

Just rewatched My Sassy Girl last Monday aND OH GOD PLEASE NOOOOOO DON'T RUIN THIS BEAUTIFUL MOVIE

And as much as I love f(x), in fact my favorite girl group from SMent, Victoria's acting is uhm......

Big NO!!!! Agreed with you JB, don't mess up with a good thing. Its impossible to have actors like Cha Tae-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun for the casts. They're IRREPLACEABLE!!! I don't hate victoria, but she needs to learn how to sing first, then act. Let it be.. My sassy girl itself is history. You CANNOT replay the history..

Meh. Like Alua, I didn't even like the original movie. It was kind of retro but in a bad way. Man had a low IQ & was a doormat and girl deserved to be punched cause she was a harpy. Sequel, drama or whatever, I'm not interested.

This film only works because of the specific place and time in Korean history--dramatizing and expanding upon the internet stories from which it was adapted. A sequel is simply a preposterous, dumbheaded money grab and would, as JB notes, ruin the original.

I also don't think there was enough material in the film or the original stories to really build enough of a story for a serialized adaptation either.

No, the only adaptation that might actually work is a stage adaptation--into a musical. 'Cause that's all the rage these days.

You know I just saw saw My Sassy Girl for the first time at my birthday last year, I got it for a gift because you pretty much have to buy it before you watch it now, and loved it. So I have to say the people that came up with the ideas for both the movie sequel and the drama need to be slapped then pickled so they can no longer spread bad ideas.

Meh, I still don't understand how people got into My sassy girl. I didn't like the movie at all, and I hoped it was really good as everbody kept telling me, but I found JJH annoying and her acting was like forced imo.

I still prefer The classic and SYJ.

JJH, imo isn't that great of actress, she does brat roles well, but drama or anything more serious ... no. Like I loved her in You from another star, but that is it.

Il Mare, that was a great movie but JJH acting was a bit boring there nothing to call home, Windstuck - couldn't get into it too.

I guess JJH is just a no for me.

When JJH first debuted she was bad - and people back then thought the same - just after some years and after this movie and others her acting started to get more love, back then people thought she was famous for being pretty and a cf star, but she improved a lot through the years.

Still she is a godness for her looks but acting? No, her is good but not that good. She killed her role in YWCFAS because she was similar to her character in real life - KSH and herself said so.

Rude, now people cannot have their opinions, I watched most of her works and never warmed up for her acting - she is a good person in real life and really beautiful, but sorry I don't think her acting is amazing, everybody has their own opinion,

But is ok, I already knew I would be bashed for it, makes me remember when I "dared'' to say Won Bin acting is overated and he improved a bit but his acting isn't also amazing. There, now I'm sure people will kill me here.

i like the drama idea...i mean it could be enjoyable to see the story unfold in a 2013 set up with pretty new faces but the movie sequal idea just seems to be a 'fatal' insult to the real one...hope the movie idea gets burried.
