Jung Il-woo gets bad daddy and hostile hyung in Night Watchman
by girlfriday
We’ve got more cast additions to MBC’s fantasy sageuk The Records of a Night Watchman, which stars Jung Il-woo as a bad boy prince who moonlights as a ghostbusting night watchman: Choi Won-young, aka hot dad in Heirs and evil chaebol in Three Days, will be playing the hero’s loving father and righteous king who then goes crazy because of his ghost-seeing gift-curse. *GASP* You mean the same gift-curse that our hero has? I don’t like the sound of this at all! Choi Won-young plays a king who was once a legendary hero of the people after he and his night watchmen defeated a serpent monster in Mt. Baekdu. He’s a good king and father to his sons, but the gift-curse eventually turns him into an evil tyrant.
Also joining the cast is Kim Heung-soo (President, Invincible Lee Pyeong-gang), who will be playing Jung Il-woo’s illegitimate hyung who challenges him for power. The actor is sporting a very different look lately, and javabeans had to point out that he’s actually this guy before I recognized him. He’s great at love-to-hate-you assholery, so he’ll be a fun addition to the cast as a scheming villain.
Jung Il-woo’s character is the bad boy legitimate heir to the throne who gains the power to see ghosts, and becomes a night watchman just like his father; in chasing ghosts and experiencing the plight of citizens firsthand, he eventually learns to be a good prince. We don’t know what course the court drama will take, but the illegitimate prince is described as growing more tyrannical over the course of the story. So basically, this is The Moon That Embraces the Gumiho Daddy, where the good father goes evil because of the curse which he passes onto his son, leaving the two princes caught in a political tug-of-war.
Yunho (Yawang) plays a fellow night watchman, and Go Sung-hee (Miss Korea) plays a character imbued with supernatural energy from Mt. Baekdu who can communicate with nature. Seo Ye-ji (Potato Star 2013QR3) has been cast as the second lead who will stop at nothing to become the prince’s bride. And Yoon Tae-young (King’s Daughter Soo Baek-hyang) will play the head of the night watch crew.
Night Watchman will be a fantasy romance sageuk about “those who deny that there are ghosts, those who use ghosts, and those who fight the ghosts.” It follows Triangle in July.

Why? Why must you tempt me with this great storyline, Show???
Just one more change.
Make this "Inspiring Generation of Moon Embracing The Gumiho Daddy", and I'm in.

I second mary above.....just ONE change would have me whole-heartedly enthusiastic about this drama instead of getting mildly nervous about the emoting/line delivery abilities of a certain lead.

More characters is good. The more characters there are, the few lines/screen time for Yunho. I am hoping he gets casted right off the screen. Or maybe they just show him stumbling around in the dark, chasing after ghosts. I think he could do that.

maybe he could go into a coma for most of the drama a la Shin in Big? That could work.

Yoon Tae-young played a deaf, mute dad in King’s Daughter Soo Baek-hyang and he was pretty good. At least there is one actor besides Jung Il woo whom I can count on.
Am I just too hopeful that their Agency will change from Yunho to Song Jae Rim??,,, I heard they have the same agency.

From what I understand:
Yunho is under SM Town and Song Jae Rim is under SM C&C. Both are under the bigger company SM. :D
I don't mind Yunho in here, really. If the investors want him, then ohkei... :( Anyway, we have JIW as lead and a good (it seems) storyline to base on.
I'm just complaining so much because I need Song Jae Rim in a drama......... T^T

I'm really looking forward to this, since I love shows with ghosts, and I love Jung Il-woo. This should be really interesting.
I like that the ghost-seeing gift is inherited from his father. Should make things more interesting. Will his hyung have the gift too?

Yeah, that's definitely an interesting tidbit...hereditary ghost-seeing ability, but seeing that father goes off the rails -- that does not bode well for Jung Il-woo's character.
It doesn't seem as though hyung will have that ability...although I guess it'd be interesting to have JIW fighting for the good and father/hyung fighting for the bad (if that was the case)?

So he gets an evil daddy and a hostile hyung but Yunho as a sidekick? And on top that, there's a chance he'll go crazy from his gift?? Talk about a curse.
I'm so excited that Seo Ye-Ji is joining this! Don't really like how the character sounds though- ambitious second lead out to marry a prince? I can already feel the eye-rolling. But she was awesome in Potato Star and her unlikely romance with Jang Ki-ha had me squealing so I'm glad she's getting more roles :)

Hm, if they could make Choi Won-young as one of the other lead actor and Yunho as just a side kick with no lines and minimal background scene per episode,-better written off by ep1, i am quite okay with this latest development.

I was already pretty intrigued with this drama already, but the expanding info on the plot is really piquing my interest even more :)
Choi Wo-young as Jung Il-woo's father?! He's only old enough to be his hyung in RL! (11 years) But I guess since it's dramaland (and plenty of makeup), he can look the part.
But I don't have any doubts he'll be able to pull off the good father/king-turned-crazy tyrant well, just from his performances in crazy-fest A Hundred Years' Inheritance and evilll Chairman Kim in Three Days.
But, my stars...what in the world happened to Kim Heung-soo??? He looks like he aged 20 years!! *shakes head in disbelief* When I first scrolled down to the picture, I did a double-take because he looked like Jo Yeon-woo. When he was clean-cut, he gave off vibes of Park Yong-ha, imo...his almost-unrecognizable transformation reminds me of Kim Nam-gil prior to what he looks like now.

moonlights as a ghost busting night watchman
man, if they're going to do the sageuk official-who-sees-ghosts thing, I hope they at least execute it as well as Arang and the Magistrate did, and don't muddle their worldbuilding like other fantasy sageuks that came after Arang (Gu Family Book, I'm looking at you)

Completely agree with you, pogo...this plot definitely has that potential --- as long as the writers don't screw it up.
Honestly, I don't think we'll ever have anything similar to the magical 'world' created by Arang's writers anytime soon. But one can hold out hope! :)
I really don't want to be disappointed with this, after all these interesting bits and pieces...even with that anomaly I'm gonna ignore :P

I'll settle for them not throwing gumihos, random unexplained black magic, randomly all-knowing monks, Lee Soon-shins and unexplained reincarnations into the same mix.
I hope to the Jade Emperor that this is better than Jung Il-woo's last drama, too.

Definitely agree with you that this better be a step up than that makjang-fest mess :/ Jung Il-woo deserves better!!
Loved all the mentions of the GFB plot devices ;P Who knows, historical characters like LSS might pop up as a ghost cameo - considering if JIW's dad was a "legendary hero king." hahaha, gosh I hope not!
But forreal though...I really do hope there's no random crap thrown in just for the sake of moving the plot a la GFB. I would hope that this writer took note of the all-over-the-place craziness and look the other way...
