Fated To Love You’s romantic picnic teaser

There’s very little story to the first teaser for Fated to Love You, but perhaps there isn’t much you need to do to sell Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara in a romantic comedy, other than show Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara on a cute picnic doing cute coupley things. The new Wednesday-Thursday drama is getting ready to premiere a week sooner than planned, after MBC cut A New Leaf down to 16 episodes (grumble, grumble). But I suppose one way to soothe angry Leaf fans is to send happy summertime romance our way.

The teaser introduces Jang Nara as a temp office worker who specializes in odd jobs, and is described as timid, weak, plain, and self-abasing. Jang Hyuk is a third-generation chaebol who has lots of money (duh), a strong sense of responsibility, a wily laugh, and “a 99% chance of dying a premature death in his thirties.” For me the comedy is in Jang Hyuk dressed in a white suit playing a guitar in the middle of a field, unironically.

Cartoon fate attacks them rather violently, but considering the general plot — a case of mistaken identity and a one-night stand lead to a pregnancy and wedding bells — it does seem apropos. Choi Jin-hyuk (Emergency Couple) plays the second lead who’s always running to Jang Nara’s rescue, Wang Ji-won (I Need Romance 3) is Jang Hyuk’s ballerina fiancée, and Choi Woo-shik (Rooftop Prince) plays his bratty brother.

Fated to Love You feels like a throwback drama in every way, from its source material (the 2008 Taiwanese show of the same name), its stars reuniting after twelve years, and the types of characters we’re going to encounter. But sometimes you reach for the old classics for good reason, and maybe we’re in for a solid rom-com trip down memory lane.

Fated to Love You premieres July 2.

The actors don't seem to fit the image. They are too old for this shenanigans. The teaser looked boring, so not what I was expecting. Jang Nara went to China, and lost her SK fame and JH doesn't work for me. Only person I'm feeling is CJH (I sense a strong second lead syndrome force, in this one).

Agree. I wish CJH was the lead, with that girl from Playful kiss or somone like her as the female lead.... :( Probably gonna skip. *sigh*

And I LIKE Nara. I just think she's too old for the lead, no matter HOW young her face is. Roles like BFB are better for her, where her apparent youth is a meta joke. Because even if her face is young, she can't pass for that young anymore, if you know what I mean.

I think she playing a 29 nine year old from the trailer, how can she be too old to play the role? I think you getting the TW version mixed up with the korean one, but even Joe Chen was like 28 or so when she made Fated anyway.

Meh... It looks really boring tbh. I like the cast but the premise just sounds meh. Like "Fated To Love You"? Sorry but that sounds really cheesy and boring.

And wow a chaebol and a poor, hardworking girl. I've never seen that combination before. /s

I think the main problem lies in the fact that if you've seen the Taiwan version ( I have about 8-10 times) you know what's going to happen and you get exited because the cast is a solid choice... For those that have no seen it, it's a vague description and you might not get exited.. Give it a chance before you judge it though!

I agree. I had the same problem with the Taiwanese version so I put off watching it but when I did I ended up loving it. Of course it has its flaws so I am hoping the kdrama version will retain the lovely story but get rid of the unecessary parts.

Wouldn't it be awesome if someone wrote a romance about a lower middle-class office worker who fell in love with another lower middle-class office worker and they learned to handle life's challenges and find happiness as a couple dealing with everyday life?

I think there are. ...At least the one I can think of right now is Likable or Not (I hate You, But It's Fine), starring Han Ji Hye & Kim Ji Suk. He plays a a new contract worker while she's the hard working team leader. But lol it's a daily drama.

Very true. I remember being surprised that the Daniel Choi character's father, though well-off, was solidly middle-class and sold pig trotters to boot. So it was kind of nice to see him rather than the chaebol guy get the girl. Except that said chaebol was a sweet guy played by the gorgeous Ryu Jin, so I found myself going against my principles and fruitlessly rooting for him instead.

I could only count a handful of dramas I think.
The ones I remember is Flower Boy Next Door and Let's Eat. A story about middle class people and everyday lives.
But Let's Eat is more slice-of-life than romance.

I think you could count What's Up Fox in the category of more average characters, but the age difference is of course the big obstacle. I prefer that over the standard rich poor dynamic though. At least the age difference concept was somewhat fresh when this drama aired, but noona romances are a dime a dozen these days.

I really liked Unemployed Romance as well. The past and the present are seamlessly connected, the two main characters are likeable, the supporting characters are, for the most part, fundamentally decent people and it shows how sometimes it's not only hard getting ahead but is often a real struggle just to stay in the same place. Plus it's funny. The scenes of the evolving relationship between the hero and his rice cooker still make me laugh.

Jang Nara really resembles the actress who played her character in the original version.

I wish I could be more excited for this because really, it's what I've been demanding from dramaland. More rom-coms. But this feels so much like a drama of the past - which it is. Can't help but feel the remake came a little late. I'd buy the sticky girl, jerk chaebol in 2010 and love their love story. Like Secret Garden. But in today's time it's a little outdated and lame.

Also... What the heck is up with Janh Hyuk's hair. The style is already bad but now it looks greasy too. CJH looks good though, and I'm not even a fan.

Ugh, I know, the second leads in the original FTLY were so so bland. I could not understand at all how anyone second shipped "Priest Dylan". Bland character, no chemistry, no acting skill.

I didn't LOVE Fated to Love You (MingEn forever!) and the second half was unbearable but I would watch this just for nostalgia's sake.

OK, this is a very important question re this drama's cast that I NEED to know: Is there a Korean counterpart for Ji Bao Bei and is she cast yet!? I remember her being a BIG part of the original. They better not leave her out.

I liked the way the story turned on a dime and got really [SPOILER DELETED]. That was the start of her transformation from doormat into woman with a backbone. I don't like rom-coms to be nothing but fluff the whole way through. It's like eating cotton candy for every meal. You grow sick of how insubstantial it is, how simply, sickeningly sweet it is, how there's nothing to bite into.

Even rom-coms need to get a little real in places. When lots of people were squeeing over how cute the Chan Young and Bo Na characters were in Heirs, and saying they wish the whole story was about them, I thought, WTF? Their story was cotton candy, fun for a few minutes at the theme park, but not for the whole day. That would get boring and annoying. No "there" there. I like that Fated to Love You went to real places at times.

Required fields are marked *

There are ways to make the story better paced and that's what I'm hoping for with a shorter time frame to tell the story in.

Yes you can have poignant melodrama, but the key isn't to make it go overboard and sink halfway through by promising a rom com up front and then the second half entirely goes into waves of despair. (Yes, I'm making references to the original premise)

With a little editing on the part of the TW drama they could have made the emotional late a bit more even, thus the ride would have been on even kilter rather than breaking promises to the viewer left and right on what kind of story it was going to be, because the truth is the writer feels *lost* and the best way to stall for time is the grand ol' Hospital scene. (I'm also blaming K-drama writers for this)

When you insert something dramatic, it should be in keeping with the story... and that's where I felt fated to Love You, the original failed. Also, I might be biased because ISWAK 2 managed to also promise to be a rom com, delivered, had something really sad, but the difference was that it naturally progressed from the story and it was airing at the same time as Fated to Love You. (Plus ISWAK as a whole, both seasons, are a clear showing of a superior drama). The scene with the mom near the end of ISWAK 2 grew naturally over the course from ISWAK 1, so by the time of that scene it resonated and hard. The gradual building up of it was art on an emotional and film making level. Which is to say that it can be done well in TW dramas.

Car scene seemed super random to me in the original. More it felt like thrown in to fit the three act structure rather than something to be built up to, which TW and Chinese stories can do well by using, ya know, fate, destiny and all of those other Buddhist/Taoist ideals in a super Chinese/Taiwanese way. Hinting at it... (Il Mare, Korean movie, did something like that and managed to make it both feel inevitable and organic--that's skill.)

The results of the car scene also bothered me a lot on a feminist level and I spent a lot of time wanting to hurl things at the screen. I even rewrote the ending using existing footage to make it more pleasant, though I still watched the whole thing.

So mostly my issue is the technical story telling level because stories are supposed to play with a person's emotions. If it fails that, you don't hook 'em. Random is fine, but it has its time and its place. Not for when the writer is running out of storyline.

BTW, I heavily avoided spoilers in this one. Anything you inferred is your fault. Though whatever you guessed probably doesn't get to the crux of the matter.

This! All of this! That was my main complaint (okay, my second main complaint. After ANNA!!!) with this drama. They didn't know how to balance the comedy with the melodrama. Personally, I had no problem with them trying to mix the two together. I found the melodrama compelling when it was about the baby. I just really, really hated Anna. When she was around, I was sitting on my hands to keep myself from flinging my computer at the wall.

Although it's not my favorite TW drama, it's the first one I ever saw and it packed a punch. I agree the melo was super heavy handed after the car scene, but I wept all the way through.

Required fields are marked *

In what part of the premise is the heroine supposed to evoke, "Wow!"? Jang Nara exactly fits the bill for a quiet, easy-to-overlook doormat character. Her looks when played down, as they are in the beginning of the story, are unremarkable---cute at best. That's what the story calls for. She cleans up really well, though, and she is capable of transforming into quite the beauty. That's also what's called for in the story. The transformation tracks with her growing sense of her own worth and increasing assertiveness. What I liked about the original was the way she made our spoiled chaebol really work hard to get her back once he'd lost her. I liked his unfolding realization that he'd lost something of great value.

Jang Nara has a 100 different looks she can do, she can when she wishes look totally stunning, something she normally keeps to her CV's, she did acually starts out as a model back in her teen years. But yes her natural look is cute/pretty, though again that more her Korean image in China she very much has the cute/sexy image, that every girl whats to be, that why she a CV queen in China as indeed she was back in her pop singer days in Korea.

They'll tighten it up. The T-drama version was overly long, as T-dramas are wont to be. It probably won't go longer than 16 episodes---20 at the most, with 20 teetering dangerously close to the overly long line.

And the length of a single episode of the original T-drama was at least 75-90 minutes long. While an episode of Kdrama is approximately 60 minutes. So 24 eps for T-drama would be at least 30 eps for a Kdrama. I doubt this one would be this long.

Completely agree. The pacing of the first half of the TW was awesome. Then it was like it was a different drama, it was really draggy. They only had enough story for a max of four more episodes but dragged it out to fill twelve episodes.I stuck with it but, boy was it hard work.

It is totally up to you who to prefer, who to like, and who to consider as a 'better' actor, but you should also keep in mind that by directly comparing actors like this you are offending some other fans. Honestly, who are you to decide that CJH is 'more strong and powerful' than Jang Hyuk? Jang Hyuk has been the male lead in about 10 dramas so far, and if that's the case, apparently that means there are fans and people working in the industry who thinks he is handsome, talented and charismatic enough. And never has he let a second lead steal the show. Also the drama itself could earn a spot to be broadcasted precisely because it had JH and JNR as its main cast. CJH hasn't played a lead role in main channel yet, he has yet to prove himself. If he does end up becoming the charismatic male lead some day, well good for him. But sorry, he is not yet. I do hope he will turn out as an attractive second lead.

(Soooo I posted this comment on the wrong article. I'm just gonna post it again here, lol.)

I’m ridiculously excited for this remake. Fated to Love You is the first drama I ever watched, and I had a very intense love-hate relationship with it. I loved to hate it, and I hated that I loved it.

There are really only a few things I’m looking to get out of this remake. 1) I want the evil secondary female lead to be at least slightly less awful (even if I know that’s a completely ridiculous request. This is an Asian drama after all, lol.) 2) I really hope it goes in a more comedic direction. The original definitely had a sense of humor, but anytime we strayed outside of our main OTP and spent time with the secondary characters…things just got annoyingly dramatic. (Seriously ballerina girl. No one cares about you.) 3) This one is probably the most important. I don’t want them to tone down any of the drama surrounding the baby in the original. I know I just said that I want this to be a funny remake, and I do. But all of the drama surrounding the baby is really essential to the overall storyline, and if any of that has to be sacrificed in order to make the drama more funny, then I don’t want it to be more funny. Just make me cry, drama writers. I’m okay with that. (I never thought I would ever say that, lol.)

Finally! After Emergency Couple (which uh... still in hiatus, not finished since forever) nothing had caught my attention. I have a little expectation with this drama. Almost all the remakes are not that good but hey, I love the this drama so I will give a shot with this one.

Somehow I wanna see Jang Nara act with Eric in romantic comedy. They both successful idol-turns-actor, handsome-pretty and dorky.

Hate: -They cut episodes from A New Leaf
- That CJH is sooooo OVERJEWELLED. I mean seriously he is wearing so much jewelry.
- JH's hair. He is to old to carry that look. Look like a cheap italian import tbh

Like: -The cute Rottie
- Both the Jangs are decent actors with good comedic timing
- Choi Jin Hyuk...'nuff said

I love ANL as well...but it's also not FTLY fault to cut it :( They also were victims since they had to broadcast a week earlier than planned and were rushed with their schedule.

I absolutely adored this series, watched it three times! I did not watch the originals, so know nothing about that one. I loved watching the Jang's, and I especially love his laugh.
