You’re All Surrounded: Episode 4
by girlfriday
This is a great episode that hits a nice balance between emotional heft, situational comedy, and heartwarming growth for our main characters. The case of the day gets used in a thoughtful way that brings the team together and forces them to act as one whether they want to or not. It’s like mandatory group therapy. At gunpoint. But some people need a little shove to work out their issues.

EPISODE 4: “It’s okay… It’s not okay”
In the aftermath of the stalker stabbing case, Dae-gu and Soo-sun watch speechlessly as the emergency team takes the victim away on a stretcher.
Their squad chief Eung-do is there with the missing persons team leader, Sa-kyung, who’s been after the stalker for some time. Thankfully for them, she caught the guy as he was fleeing. The stalker gives a little nod to Dae-gu as he’s hauled away, just to make the guilt land with extra oomph.
Eung-do wonders what they’re doing here, and then Sa-kyung asks if the tape recorder and camera found in the victim’s purse belong to Eung-do’s team. Suddenly they realize the two rookies aren’t here by coincidence.
Pan-seok races back from his police academy conference as furious as expected, and tears into the precinct. Gook and Tae-il greet him with an update that the victim is in surgery and they’re awaiting news on whether she’ll survive.
It just gets worse when Sa-kyung is the one to cut him down for letting two rookies handle such a delicate case without even checking on them. He just takes her lecture without a word.
Dae-gu and Soo-sun sit in an interrogation room, and Soo-sun tries to convince herself that the surgery went well and the victim is strong enough to survive. She turns to Dae-gu for some kind of reassurance—anything to make her believe her own words.
But he just spits back angrily that he said they should go by the book and do nothing, but she was the one who had to be all gung-ho and offer to nab the stalker in the first place.
Soo-sun counters that he’s not exactly free of blame either, since he’s the one who swore the stalker wouldn’t show and convinced her to leave for the night. By now she’s crying, and of course right in the middle of their bickering is when Pan-seok storms in.
Soo-sun jumps up from her chair and stands at attention, waiting for the shit to hit the fan. Pan-seok just silently walks past her… and goes straight for Dae-gu with an enormous kick that knocks him off his feet.
Dae-gu grits his teeth as the defiance builds, and Pan-seok launches into a tirade about provoking a stalker, and acting without checking in with their squad chief at all times. “Did I not tell you?! You can’t save a person who’s dead but you CAN kill a person who’s still alive!”
He says that one moment’s mistake, one inexperienced decision, can end a person’s life. It’s why he told them never to act alone. Suddenly Dae-gu snaps and suggests that he should’ve explained it so kindly before. Ack.
He starts ranting right back, arguing that Pan-seok never taught them any of these things, and just let them loose on cases to do as they wanted, only to revert to lecturing now. He adds with derision that even a three-year-old is more consistent than that.
And then he calls Pan-seok out for using physical violence, pointing at the cameras that are recording everything. He shouts that he’s going to report him, which of course the veteran cops find utterly ridiculous. He caps off the rant with one final doozy, in banmal: “Seo Pan-seok, I could end you!”
Pan-seok tells him to go ahead, and he’ll make sure they capture all the proper angles on camera. At that, they come to blows, as Dae-gu slams him down on the desk and starts choking him.
Pan-seok wrestles him down to the ground, but Dae-gu gets the upper hand again and strangles Pan-seok with alarming strength.
It takes everyone else just to pull him off, and even Pan-seok looks startled at the level of rage. Well, he looks shocked in between the, “You son of a bitch!” and Hold me back, hold me back!
Dae-gu just keeps digging his grave, even as his teammates are yanking him out of the room, and screams in banmal that Pan-seok has no right to say these things. The team finally manages to separate them, thank goodness, and Dae-gu storms out. Pan-seok calms down long enough to sit down, but then he flips a table before leaving.
Gook can’t believe Dae-gu’s reaction when begging on his knees might not have been enough in the situation. Soo-sun is too distracted to listen, and rushes back to the hospital to wait for word on the victim.
Tae-il sighs and tells Gook that he doesn’t like it here. He came here to avoid table deaths (ah, so med school, or even time spent being a doctor?) but this job isn’t any different.
Gook asks what table deaths are, and Tae-il leans in close and asks teasingly for him to guess. I can’t tell if he’s flirting or just messing with him, but it’s cute. Gook gets uncomfortable and walks away, and Tae-il chases after him, “Gook-ah, were you always this cute?” Hee.
Soo-sun waits all night at the hospital, but can’t bring herself to go inside. She just stands at the door watching the victim’s mother clutch her daughter’s hand desperately.
Dae-gu heads to the train station and buys a ticket to Masan. He sits on the empty platform just playing the mistake over in his head, until it leads him to memories of Mom’s murder.
In the morning, Soo-sun waits for Pan-seok to arrive at the precinct and hangs her head in apology. He doesn’t let her off the hook and says he should’ve stuck to his guns about not having any longhaired teammates, and tells her she can’t come inside.
She follows him in anyway, and they find the station filled with murmurs and eyeballs all pointed at them. The press is doing a number on the police force because of the incident, and are questioning Chief Kang’s decision to accept so many rookie detectives.
Chief Toad comes out to address the violent crimes unit, and tells Pan-seok to go ahead and die because that’s what he thinks the situation calls for. Pan-seok apologizes, ready to take responsibility for his team.
The meeting is interrupted when the victim’s mother walks in and slaps Soo-sun across the face for daring to come to the hospital after what she did. Ouch.
Meanwhile, Dae-gu arrives in Masan and walks down that familiar ocean-side road as children pass by on their way to school. He makes his way up to his old house and stands at the front gate, but just being there brings back the memories of Mom’s final moments so vividly that he recoils.
He runs down the beach and lets out a scream. After sitting in the sand for some time, his phone starts to ring, and suddenly Mom’s sitting there next to him, asking why he’s not picking up.
His accent comes back as he says shakily, “Mom?” She asks if he did something wrong and ran away, and he denies it like a little kid about to get in trouble. But she says it’s written all over his face, so he admits it.
He says he almost killed someone again. He’s furious with himself for such a stupid lapse in judgment and calls himself a bird-brain too. He sighs that even if he doesn’t want to be a detective and is only there to get close to Pan-seok, he of all people—”Me, who sent you away like that”—shouldn’t have let this happen.
She tells him he can just do better from now on, but he shouts that someone almost died because of him, again, after Mom died that way. Aw, poor buddy. Mom tells him her death wasn’t his fault, and sighs that her smart son has just accumulated another painful memory he won’t be able to forget.
She tells him he did wrong, but he can’t run away like this. She says he’s bad at it anyway, since running away is done by people who have the capacity to forget: “You’re too smart, so you can’t forget, can you?”
He asks if she’s sure, and asks her again and again. She swears that it’s as true as the earth revolving around the sun. It’s the same expression he uses, which he must’ve gotten from Mom.
He doesn’t look convinced, and suddenly seems very small as he cries, “Mom, you’re mad at me, aren’t you? You hated me a lot, didn’t you?” His lip quivers as he cries, and he wipes at his tears. A soccer ball rolls over to him and a group of little boys ask for their ball back. He throws it over to them, and when he looks back, Mom is gone and the moment has passed.
Police Chief Kang looks over the articles that are slamming her policies, and says in a thinly veiled warning to Chief Toad that the level of detail in the articles suggests that someone on the inside is leaking information to the press. Hm, maybe the Toad is a rat? She pretends it’s just her overactive imagination at work and leaves it alone for now.
Soo-sun walks on eggshells at work, and is treated like an invisible girl as far as Pan-seok is concerned. When his team gets called out for a case, she runs out with them, but he orders them to shut the car door and leave her behind.
With nowhere else to go, she heads back to the hospital, and this time Sa-kyung is there. She says that luck must be on Soo-sun’s side because the victim is alive, and recovering out of the ICU. Tears pool in Soo-sun’s eyes and she sinks into a seat in relief. That night she drafts her resignation letter, and hesitates as she looks at a photo of Dad sitting on her desk.
She narrates, “When you died, I learned one thing—that a world without Dad continues to turn. And I gave up two things—college, and my dream. It’s okay, being a detective wasn’t my dream anyway. It’s okay.” She leaves the resignation letter on Pan-seok’s desk and walks out.
Dae-gu walks along the pier and passes by the spot where he first met Soo-sun in that big brawl where he defended his crush’s honor. He scoffs that she’s exactly the same now. Just then, Soo-sun’s oppa passes by on a bike and pauses, wondering where he’s seen that guy before.
Back at the precinct, Tae-il stops Sa-kyung with a knowing smile and asks, “Don’t you remember me?” She flatly says no, but he doesn’t seem convinced. A second later, Gook comes up and wonders why she and Pan-seok got divorced, and Tae-il is surprised to hear that they were married in the first place.
Soo-sun tells the boys that she’s quitting, and they kick up a fuss to try and convince her to stay. They argue that none of them were in this for some big lifelong dream; they’re all just trying to make it.
Dae-gu shows up in the middle of their conversation and grouses at Soo-sun for quitting, as if he didn’t just disappear and reappear after detonating a Pan-seok-sized bomb. Soo-sun rails at him for his flippant attitude and screams at him to apologize for disappearing on her without a word.
He tells her to take back her resignation letter before he has to quit too, and she says he should be fired. They call each other bbagasari (another fish, hur, but also slang for pain in the ass). It’s hilarious that in the middle of this heated argument, Gook tries to intervene, and gets slapped away by Soo-sun.
She remembers him rooting around in Pan-seok’s desk and decides she might as well tell on him before she quits, and Dae-gu snatches the phone out of her hand. Suddenly the serious argument turns into a childish game of keep-away.
He holds her phone out of reach, so she yanks on his hair, pwahaha. Gook just gets battered trying to stop them, and they go in circles like that until suddenly Tae-il walks over, handcuffs them to each other, and takes the phone. HA. I love it.
He tells them he’s tired of their bickering, and decides he’s hungry for lunch and he’ll un-cuff them once they’ve made up. With no other choice, they tag along to go eat lunch still handcuffed to each other.
It’s seems like something’s going to happen in this restaurant, because we spend some time with the guy sitting at a nearby table alone. He’s a cranky down-on-his-luck sort, perhaps a salesman, and he’s clearly avoiding calls from collection agencies and complaining to the owner that she got his order wrong. The ajumma doesn’t seem to care much, and even kicks his box of hairspray because it’s in her way.
The only other table in the restaurant is a trio of schoolgirls of the smart-mouthed bratty variety, and our cops. Soo-sun complains that she can’t ever make up with an asshat like Dae-gu, but no one is listening. Gook sings along to idol group Apink on TV, and asks Tae-il which is the prettiest. Tae-il: “You are.”
The salesman’s day just gets worse and worse, as he gets sauce on his shirt trying to pick up his cans of hairspray, then finds a hair in his food (which the ajumma digs out with her fingers, gross). He fumes, wondering why the universe is doing this to him, and then the straw that breaks the camel’s back: one of the girls trips on a can of hairspray and knocks him face-down into his plate of food.
She isn’t the least bit apologetic, and the guy just silently gets up, goes to the kitchen, locks the front door, and then grabs the girl who tripped with a knife at her throat. The other girls scream and he orders them all to raise their hands.
The ajumma returns after running out for a delivery, and finds the front door locked. She peers inside and panics, and thankfully it isn’t long before Pan-seok and the other cops get the call and race to the scene.
Pan-seok wonders where the rookies ran off to, and their phones ring like crazy all at once. Dae-gu just eyes Tae-il to hand over the keys to the handcuffs, and he searches his pockets, but comes up empty. Great.
The salesman sees them moving around and notices that Dae-gu and Soo-sun aren’t raising both hands, and shouts at them to lift both. Dae-gu grabs Soo-sun’s hand behind him, trembling, and then suddenly she shouts, “We’re in love!” Dae-gu: “What?”
But he recovers half a second later and says it’s their hundred-day anniversary today and asks for everyone’s congratulations. He makes a heart over his head with his one free arm, and Soo-sun does the same. I’m dying.
And then Soo-sun suddenly starts straining to breathe, and Dae-gu doesn’t miss a beat: “My baby’s heart is weak. Can’t I just hold her hand?” He puts an arm around her and she leans in: “Oppa.” Pfft. He kicks Tae-il, and he and Gook immediately start clapping and singing in congratulations.
Gook asks the salesman if he has a girlfriend, and the guy says all he has to his name is a room in a gosiwon and mountains of debt, so she left him to marry a lawyer. At that, one of the other schoolgirls stands up and scoffs that she can solve all this and asks how much money he wants. Augh, spoiled rich kids.
Soo-sun covers her mouth and tries to tell the girl not to provoke the hostage-taker, but the girl just wriggles free and keeps mouthing off. The salesman scoffs when she throws out figures in the millions as if it’s chump change to her, and it only angers him more that he’s worked so hard while some people have all that excess.
It sets him off that they’re treating him like a beggar, and he cuts the gas line, declaring that they might as well all die together. He holds a lighter up to the line.
Outside, Pan-seok arrives on the scene and hears that the suspect, named Choi Woo-shik (ha, the actor’s real name) is a cosmetics company salesman and there are seven hostages inside. He orders other detectives to look into the salesman’s background and get the gas turned off.
He peers inside with binoculars and sees the three schoolgirls, and then lands on Dae-gu and Soo-sun… and Tae-il and Gook. Ha, I know they might die, but of all the bad luck, I swear. Eung-do asks about the situation inside and Pan-seok just hands him the binoculars, “It’s incredible is what.” Chief Toad arrives and blows a gasket.
Inside, the rookies try and figure out what to do next, and Dae-gu scans his memory for any clues he can use. He thinks back to the moment they walked into the restaurant, and now remembers seeing a date circled in the salesman’s calendar: Mom’s memorial.
Meanwhile, one of the schoolgirls starts coughing more violently, and Tae-il guesses that she’s asthmatic and she won’t last long with all this gas. Pan-seok’s voice comes blaring out of a bullhorn, and the rookies light up at the sound of his voice.
He tries to get the salesman to pick up the phone, and says that it must’ve been hard to lose his job after spending all that time at the company. But the salesman scoffs, “Since when has the world listened to what I have to say?” and lets the phone go unanswered.
He gets riled up, so Dae-gu interjects to try and get him to list his demands if he doesn’t want to talk to anyone. That doesn’t work, so then Dae-gu takes a guess that he was planning to get his big promotion and show up to his mother’s memorial at the end of the month.
The salesman freezes and asks how he knows that, and Dae-gu admits to seeing the date marked in his planner. He says he understands because his mother died too, when he was fifteen. His teammates look over at him in surprise.
Dae-gu urges the salesman to answer, because for the first time, the entire world is waiting to hear what he has to say. It works, and he calls Pan-seok to say that he has one demand: get his ex-boss here to apologize.
While they’re on the phone, all hell breaks loose when the schoolgirls’ mothers arrive in hysterics, and then inside, the asthmatic girl collapses. Tae-il rushes over to her and orders Gook to find her inhaler. He helps her, but warns that if she doesn’t get to a hospital soon she could die.
Suddenly Pan-seok hears Soo-sun’s voice come through loud and clear: “I’ll be your hostage!” She tells him the truth—that she’s a cop—and shows him her hand cuffed to Dae-gu’s. She says that she can’t do anything to him like this, so he should take her as his hostage and let these girls go.
The salesman thinks this is some trick, so then Dae-gu takes out his handcuffs and cuffs his other hand to the pipes on the wall. Gook takes out his handcuffs and says he’s a cop too, and offers to be the hostage since Soo-sun can’t be untangled from Dae-gu anyway, and he’s been a hostage once before.
And finally Tae-il cuffs himself to Soo-sun and asks if they can be trusted now. It’s like an accordion doll with cops. A few tense seconds pass by, and then the salesman says he’ll let the girls go. He tells them they have three hours to get his boss here or he blows the detectives up. The schoolgirls get released, and Chief Kang breathes a sigh of relief that the rookies succeeded.
Next, Pan-seok crawls through the ventilation duct and takes a gas reading from above the restaurant. Dae-gu is the only one standing because he’s cuffed to the pillar, and he locks eyes with Pan-seok looking down at them. Pan-seok mouths, Are you okay? but Dae-gu just darts his eyes over in the salesman’s direction as a warning, and Pan-seok narrowly avoids being spotted.
He crawls back out and tells them the gas level is dangerously high, and Eung-do gives him worse news: the salesman’s boss is in Japan. The other officers are ready to chance it with a breach, but Pan-seok steps in to ask for more time: “They’re detectives. Maybe they’ll create an opportunity for us.”
The other guy argues that they’re just rookies who can’t be relied upon, but Pan-seok defends them and says they got the students out.
Inside, everyone’s looking pretty sapped. The salesman sighs that his boss probably isn’t coming. He’s apparently a lowlife who promised an entire staff of part-time workers a salaried position if they bought caseloads of expensive product and sold them off in a year.
He worked so hard to earn the measly commission just so he could be an official salaried employee, and then the boss fired them all with a month left on the deal and ran off. Dude, that’s not a boss; that’s a con man. They ask why he didn’t demand money instead of an apology, and the guy admits what he really wanted was to be reinstated at his job.
While all this is going on, Dae-gu is the only one who notices that the salesman has put his lighter down. He eyes it just waiting for an opportunity. But salesman picks it back up when he decides that government employees like them wouldn’t understand his pain, and they should just die together.
Soo-sun urges him not to give up so quickly since there’s still time left on his deadline. She says that giving up is never the answer, and that she had to take the civil service exam seven times before she passed it. Dae-gu turns to her in disbelief and solidifies his opinion of her chicken-brain.
The salesman thinks he’d rather just end it now than go through finding another job all over again, and starts getting twitchy. Soo-sun shouts, “Judo!” like it’s some kind of magic word, and then follows it up with a story about how her father is a judo instructor and the first thing you learn in judo is how to fall.
First you learn to fall, and then you learn how to fight; she says that he’s just learning how to fall. The rest of the boys all turn to look at her incredulously, and she wonders why.
Dae-gu: “Do you not know why we’re looking at you? You say that, and this morning you handed in a what?” She blinks and then spits back, “That was because of you, you jerk! Because you ran away! Do you know how scared I was those two days you disappeared on me?!”
She tells him everything—how frightened she was every time the phone rang thinking it was bad news about the victim, how she berated herself for being so stupid, how she wished she had been punished instead of being treated like an invisible person, but didn’t know how to apologize to Pan-seok or make it right. “I spent two days like that alone!”
Tears stream down her face: “The case turned out that way, but it began with a sincere desire to help her. And you’re the only one who knew that! And I’m the only one who knew that about you. Because we’re partners! So apologize! Apologize, you jerk, for leaving me all alone!” Aw.
The salesman agrees: “Hey Pillar, apologize to her.” And more importantly, he puts the lighter back down in that moment. Soo-sun is still too busy fighting with Dae-gu to notice, but then Tae-il accidentally trips over a stray hairspray can.
They go tumbling, and Dae-gu knocks over the box of cans with the lighter on top, and everyone goes diving for it. Tae-il ends up with a can of hairspray in his hand, and the salesman with the lighter. Dammit.
But then a split second of recognition passes between them, and Tae-il sprays right into his eyes. That gives Gook a chance to tackle him, and then Dae-gu slips his hand out of the handcuffs on the pillar.
The threesome counts to three and they dive in. It’s a mess of limbs everywhere, and I’m pretty sure they’re suffering as much pain as they’re giving, but they’ve got the guy. Gook body-slams him just to be sure, and yells, “Don’t move! You’re totally surrounded!”
Eventually Eung-do sees what’s going on through the binoculars and the team finally storms in to rescue them.
The rookies sit outside drinking in oxygen from tanks, and Eung-do comes by to check on them. He chuckles that it’s nice to see Soo-sun smiling for the first time in days, and endearingly calls Dae-gu a moron. Dae-gu apologizes and Eung-do just wags a finger and says it’s okay as long he knows he was wrong. Somehow I don’t think it’ll be this easy with Pan-seok.
Eung-do laughs that they sure do have good luck when it comes to landing interesting cases, and asks why they were there in the first place. Gook says that the start of the whole thing was Soo-sun’s letter of resig— and he trails off as they all realize the letter is still in play.
They look at each other and wonder what to do, and Dae-gu is the first to say, “What do you mean, what do we do? We go reclaim it!” They go running, and from a distance, Pan-seok smiles to see them run off together.
They burst through the doors and run to Pan-seok’s desk, and phew, the letter is exactly where she left it, untouched. They jump for joy and even Dae-gu looks pleased, though he’s still too cool for school and walks out before anyone can hug him.
They walk together that night, still buzzing with excitement. Soo-sun narrates in voiceover as she throws her arms around the boys:
Soo-sun: Being a detective wasn’t my dream, but I wasn’t okay at all. I didn’t want to give up and I didn’t want to run away. I may be learning nothing but how to fall for twenty-seven years, but it’s okay, because I have these guys next to me who helped me realize that fact, and because that’s youth.
Dae-gu falls back from the group when his phone rings, or rather when Pan-seok’s clonephone rings. They pick up at the same time, and Dae-gu listens in. On the other end of the line, a man arrives at the airport. Ack, it’s Combat Boots, Mom’s killer.
We only see his chin and the scar behind his ear, as he says ominously, “It’s been a long time, Team Leader Seo. You haven’t forgotten my voice, have you?” It’s clear from the looks on their faces that neither of the boys has forgotten this killer’s voice.
COMMENTS
The implosion between hotheads today was impressively brutal. I’m surprised that Dae-gu still has a job after being so outrageously insubordinate, but then maybe I underestimated Pan-seok’s tolerance. Their confrontation was such a great scene because Dae-gu was all hate, and Pan-seok alternated every second between bewilderment and fury, not knowing what to make of him but still pissed off that it was happening. I was shocked because I expected it to remain a simmering tension between them for a long time, given that Dae-gu has a vested interest in hiding his identity. But we get great character moments when he crosses the line, so I’m all for more dangerous brawls that push the boundaries, just as long as everyone keeps their limbs and their jobs.
Dae-gu’s trip to Masan and his scene with Mom was a much needed character beat for him, because he’s so silent and angry most of the time. He’s immediately fifteen again when he talks to her, and the way he imagines her is speaking to him as if he’s fifteen too. There’s no edge to him when he’s that way, and he suddenly seemed so tiny and innocent and trusting, begging for Mom to swear something is true as if that makes it so. The way he talked about Mom’s death—as if it’s a thing he caused—made me grateful that the stalker’s victim survived in the end. It seems that they learned the gravity of their mistakes without her needing to die, and at this point if he had to carry that guilt too, I don’t know that he would’ve gone back.
I really loved the case of the day, because it fits so well with our rookies thematically, and highlights that regardless of what line of work they’re in, twentysomething young adults feel the same—lost, set loose out in the world to sink or swim on their own, and terrified of failing. There was a nice camaraderie they had with the crazy hostage-taking salesman, because he was strangely a lot like them, and he forced their fears to the surface. Of course their differences are what matter in the end—they have each other, while he was alone, and they took responsibility for their actions instead of blaming the stupid universe.
Tae-il’s flash of genius in cuffing the two stooges together was priceless. I’m not greedy—those two minutes of Fish Called Oppa and Birdie Baby’s rom-com adventures are enough to sustain me through more hair-pulling and name-calling. Not that I’d say no to a few minutes of that every week. What really hit home was of course her tear-filled rant at him to apologize for leaving her all alone when he’s supposed to be her partner. That tugged the heart in all the right ways, and he sprang into action when it counted, to reclaim her resignation letter and preserve their partnership. I love the feeling in the closing scene that we’re at the beginning of a great friendship between these four young people who are finding their way in the world. That’s a story I want to see through to the end.

This drama is sooo goooodddddd. I'm loving the go ara and LSG pairing. Though I wonder if it's weird cause LSG's current GF Yoona and Go Ara are really good friends. Lol
Looks like SBS has another monster hit on its hands after YWCFTS.

I love the very end of the ep, when the killer called. It brings the drama back into heart-tugging territory for me. Otherwise it's just a tale of 4 fishes out of water learning to adapt. Not that there is anything wrong with that, just less meaningful.
Pan Seok wasn't a bad cop; he was just a rookie who was used, just like these kids are rookies and could be easily used or manipulated. One day Dae Gu will learn that, and also the pain/guilt that PS has been carrying these years, and come to forgive PS. Waiting to see that.

Yess loved this episode! Much better than yesterday. I felt that episode would be their low point that was hard to watch, but unnecessary and I'm glad I was right.
The fake couple thing was seriously funny and I loved the rookies all working together. They've quickly endeared themselves to me this episode. PS actually defended them and both him and Dae Gu smiled (sort of!) too! I'm really looking forward to seeing how these guys grow.

This was definitely the best episode so far :)
I absolutely LOVE forced skinship on shows like this because it helps the characters connect.
And Tae-Il and Gook are just the cutest. <3

does anyone know who the second lead is for this drama, or if there is even a love triangle at all??

I don't think so. Today we found out that Seo pan Seok and that lady were actually married and now divorced.
It would be weird if their was a love triangle between Lee seung gi, go ara and cha seung won. This maybe one of the very few dramas without a love triangle.

I don't want any love triangle between them rookies, to be honest their bond and friendship seems too precious to be tainted by love triangles.

There isn't another girl in the posters or character lists. Perhaps the job itself, regulations? It is a cop drama, in kdrama it seems that the cop dramas are less likely to have second leads. It is more the will they / won't they setup. Or you could look at it as Pan-seok and Sa-kyung are the second leads, it is just we know there will be no square.

Love your recap Gf.
Some thoughts of mine. I think that all these years Daegu did feel guilty - took the blame for his mother's death because, not only did he see her die, he did not anything to stop it. He could have tried to stop Combat Boots, but that would mean both of them dying. In addition to that horror, his mother died saving him by drawing attention to herself, so that Combat Boots would not look under the bed. This is a really heavy burden to bear.
And I have to say that Seunggi did a fantastic job with that scene.
Another thought I have: What's with Tae Il? Seems like he was either a med student or doctor, but he behaviour - first, the kiss that the young doctor gave him and then in this ep, his strange behaviour towards Gook. I hope that the writer doesn't go down that line!!!!

I agree Daegu has been holding onto a lot of guilt over his mothers death. He called his Mom out for not wanting to testify. He guilt-ed her into doing it. Then he tried to turn it around on Pan-seok. I remember when he went off on Pan-seok thinking it was Daegu's own guilt.
I love Tae-il! His bromance with Gook has become one of my favorite parts of this drama. If the writers choose to go down that path and it adds to the story I support their decision. The LGBTQ community is under represented in K-Drama.

I'm with you. I have a feeling the doctor will turn out to be family and everything else will be a "misunderstanding" or some other cop out, but I actually do hope they go down that path with Tae-il. LGBTQ is sadly under represented in media everywhere and it would be great to see a gay character in a popular SBS drama.
Thanks for the recap, girlfriday! I'm really enjoying this drama.

I agree with you guys...I really, really, really want Tae-il and Gook to be a thing. I sort of doubt that there will be anything besides adorable bromance and teasing, but I would like to see some actual flirting at the very least xD Sigh. A gay couple is probably too much to ask from dramaland...but it wold be so cute! :D
And if he turns out to be straight (or not even a little bi) I will flip a table. Like Pan-seok. -_-

I'm hoping everything with Tae-il isn't just to set up another "Psych! He's straight" thing like in Reply 1997. That left me with a bad taste in my mouth and this would to. It's a rumor that he has a love line with Pan-seok's ex... I like cop shows without too much romance anyway, so that would annoy me.

1997 should be the benchmark on how gay love should be portrayed. Joon-hee still breaks my heart and I totally shipped him with Yun-jae even if I loved Shi-won and knew it was impossible. 1994 was such a fail in this aspect, on the other hand.
If Tae-il is not gay, I hope they don't make us believe that until the 11th hour. If he is, I ship him with Gook. Or Dae-gu. Whoever he prefers lol.

Thanks for the recap girlfriend you have a way with words that I really like. First time commenting here but I follow this blog for a while just wanted to say I appreciate this blog. I wonder I'd Daego really grew up emotionally I mean if he has photographic memory he probably can remember what happened to his mom like it was yesterday especially given the fact he seems to be blaming himself. I just had a random thought that the person helping him can be pan seok ex wife since she is head of missing persons and he was a missing persons (probably not but that would be interesting) anyway thanks again.

I am having really tough time liking this drama. I thought it was comedy and I did expect them to be in bad situations but did not expect them to be written this way. There was barely any comedy today, I did not even feel any charm and overall, felt very disappointed and mostly bored.
I really enjoyed the first episode and had lots of hope for my Wed/Thu fix but it is not enjoyable now.
Just disappointed. Yet another drop. :-(

Yeah, I'm with you. The interactions and situations just seemed forced and over-done. The reactions to things like "I got my resignation letter back!" was just so childish and drawn out like they were filling time. I don't get the sense the rookies are particularly close enough to jump up and down in the station because of that.
The hostage scene was just so long, boring, and just didn't make any sense. LSG's great contribution was that he remembered seeing the perp's calendar entry for his mom's death? But the situation is resolved over hairspray?
It is like they are making it up as they are filming.

Thanks for the awesome review!
The episodes just keep getting better. Even though this episode didn't have 1 fart joke it was still my favorite.
PLEASE let Pan-seok be a good guy. During the police academy conference he appeared to still want to solve Dae-gu's mom's case.
Soo-sun sometimes I want to hug her other times I want to bop her in the head. This was definitely a hug episode. I am looking forward to her characters growth.
Tae-il & Gook bromance is so much fun to watch. It's become one of my favorite parts of this drama.
Dae-gu is my son's age. That scene with his mother ripped my heart out. I am glad he had that moment.
OMG that final scene with Pan-seok, Dae-gu and the killer. I cannot wait until next week!

Ahhh, I loved this episode, as I did the past three. There's so many things happening and very quickly too. The hour passes by in no time.
Firstly, what's the deal with Tae-il? His supposed relationship with Sa-kyung seems intriguing. The drama is also kinda shoving the idea that he's gay, which most likely means he's not. I do love how flirty he is with Gook. He reminds me of Yong-ha from SS. But obviously that bromance is the bromance to beat.
Loved Soo-sun's outburst. Dae-gu definitely felt guilty at that moment, and if it wasn't for his prickly nature, he'd probably have said sorry already. It was so wrong of him to do what he did, but as I said in my previous comment, he's like a robot and treats everyone like one too. The apology will probably come at some point when Dae-gu starts to really feel again...
Seung-gi was fabulous in the beach scene and his accent was really obvious and well done. But I loved his innocence most. He looked lost, insecure and in need of love which makes his character endearing and sympathetic. He's always so great with emotional beats, I think he'd be quite a treat to watch in a pure melodrama like Nice Guy or WISFC.
I love Dae-gu and Soo-sun together. They're awesome, funny, cute and compatible all at once. That whole fake in-love scene had me in stiches. I can't wait for them to live together and get to know each other more. Soo-sun and the gang is the key to making Daegu human again. Being around them, having friends to talk to, people to ask help from, someone to depend on, a person to love and protect; those are the things he really needs rather than this one-minded revenge mission.
I didn't realize Dae-gu still blames himself for what happened to his mother. Which probably explains why he has built up so much hatred for PS. Its his own way of lessening his guilt and finding a source to vent all his frustrations on. I'm really into this, so I hope it keeps getting better. Thanks for the awesome recap GF!

Soo-sun's outburts both after handing in her resignation letter and while held hostage were amazing, I was nodding and getting upset along with her.
I kept waiting and waiting for Dae-gu. Not expecting a long speech or anything, but even a curt sorry would have been better considering how much Soo-sun was yelling at him to apologise.
I think the problem is that while I feel for Dae-gu and all the guilt he has. But he's pretty much on a solo revenge mission and so far not really engaging with the rest of the foursome. I know it's only ep 4 but sometimes the disconnect between Dae-gu's murder-mystery and the rookie cops just trying to get it together really jar me from the group scenes..
I might still be mad that he didn't say SORRY even once to his partner whom he abandoned to deal with the whole mess alone.
Oh and LSG speaking in saturi sounded... weird for me. Still loving YAAS though! :)

Dae-gu isn't one to say sorry, so I don't quite feel upset about it. Maybe if he did say sorry, I would've felt it was out of character because this early on, he's just learning how to feel again after being so emotionless for the past 11 years.
I disagree with the disconnect. Because Dae-gu never thinks about his mother when he's with the others. He's just prickly and too-cool for them (or so he thinks) to actually mingle. He finds two of them bird-brained and Tae-il probably the only capable one. But when they work together as a team, he's definitely in it. Even with Soo-sun, his outbursts and sarcasm are better than him being quiet because it shows that her presence affects him. He's learning to smile too, as shown in the last two scenes. They're opening up his shackles and when he lets them in, its going to change Dae-gu for the better.
Seung-gi's accent is awesome to me lol. The moment he said 'mom' I knew he was reverting back.

I think you're so right on with this. From back in the first episode there was a scene where Dae Gu was asking Pan Seok why his mother had changed her mind about testifying, if Pan Seok had said something to her to get her to change her mind, and thus gotten her killed.
I think that Dae Gu knew deep down inside that it was him who'd said the thing that changed his mom's mind, but he couldn't face up to that (and I'm not blaming him, poor thing) and so he shifted the responsibiity onto Pan Seok instead. A lot (not all) of his anger at Pan Seok is really a sublimation of his own guilt and himself, which he isn't ready to fully deal with.

Absolutely. So true. Deep down, he knows which is probably also why he asked his mom if she hated him. It's his imagination, so his mom doesn't answer him; its a refection of what he feels. He's scared of finding out the real answer, so he can't really find it.
Its really traumatic to live knowing your mom died in front of your eyes trying to save you. He already lives with that guilt and to add on that he was the reason she was in danger in the first place? That could drive someone over the edge. It's a denial of sorts. He probably told himself it was all Pan-seok's fault transferring all his guilt and anger to revenge instead. I think its his way of dealing. Which is probably going to kill him emotionally when the time comes for him to face his own fears.

No matter what led Dae Gu's mother to testify against the murderer, whether it be Dae Gu insisting his mom to testify or she herself realised that was the right thing to do, the fact still remains that the police and Pan Seok who promised Dae Gu and his mom that he would definitely be protect by them were unable to keep their promise, Pan Seok totally underestimated the situation and ended up with a dead body and a missing orphan child, I can't really blame Dae Gu in this, I know he feels guilty but he was just a child at that time and not some trained cop or a detective who could protect himself or his mother, he trusted the adult i.e Pan Seok and believed him but his trust got shattered in the most horrific way, I totally get why he's angry with Pan Seok, I'm not exactly blaming Pan Seok but he himself knows that during that time he made a crucial error of judgement, it is similar with Dae Gu and the stalker case.

No one here is saying its not Pan-seok's fault because it is. He promised to do something and didn't do it which invariably caused someone's death. No one is also blaming Dae-gu for his mom death, because it's not his fault whatsoever. He told her he feels bad for the noona which made his mom decide to testify. He also stayed quiet under the table because he knows his mom risked her life to save him.
All we're saying is that Dae-gu himself, deep down, may feel its his fault. Its PTSD (possibly survivor's guilt) he has for the last 11 years. He blames himself for something he didn't do, and to take that guilt off his shoulder, he takes out his anger on someone he knows is also at fault - that would be Pan-seok. It's a psychological barrier that's present and one he doesn't try to break because he's scared of the outcome if he succeeds.

Re-reading my comment, I realize that when I said that Dae Gu "shifted the responsibility" it may have sounded like I think that the responsibility/blame was Dae Gu's to begin with. But that isn't what I meant. What I was trying to get at is exactly what Mandy explained above. Dae Gu felt that he was responsible, even though he wasn't, and the only way he found to deal with that was to unload his guilt and grief onto Pan Seok in the form of rage and resentment.
I'm hoping that Dae Gu's journey in the show will involve not only Dae Gu making peace with Pan Seok (and we're seeing the groundwork for this being laid), but also Dae Gu making peace with himself and realizing that he was not to blame for his mother's death.

Can't edit so must add! And I specifically said "A lot (not all) of his anger at Pan Seok" because of course there is also the other element of his anger at Pan Seok, the anger at him for failing to follow through on his commitment to protect Dae Gu's mom.

Pan Seok's character - one minute he's a raving lunatic, next, he's subdued when he's with his ex, as if he's treading on thin ice. This I can except. But what I can't fathom is why is he supposed to be such a great legendary detective? He hasn't done anything that resembles greatest much so far. Although DG and SS were not right in what they did - not informing their superiors about their stakeout etc, I think Daegu is right in saying that he left them pretty much on their own.
But interestingly enough, he did tell them 2 things that they were not to do: Go overboard and be negligent - which SS and DG did.

I have a feeling that PS was guilty of both being over eager and negligent in Daegu's mum's case.
I felt that he acted on his own in getting her to testify. He had a more mature partner (collecting cigarettes scene), but when he visited Daegu's mum, he was on his own. And neglecting to provide police protection, he definitely didn't do. Apparently, she had already testified, yet there was nary a policeman on sight.

This to be honest. Some commenters are speculating that Dae Gu might be blaming Pan Seok because of his own guilt which can be true in some sense but it might also easily be that Dae Gu is angry with PS not only because of that but the fact that PS had given his word to DG and his mom that the police and him will surely provide protection to both of them but ended up neglecting them. His negligence ended up with horrific results. When DG's mom was being murdered in front of his eyes there was no sign of police protection inside or outside the house so they were clearly neglected by police. Also, the fact that PS was the only police he saw trying to persuade his mother you can understand that DG thinks he is the one to blame most.

Let's also not forget the fact that Dae Gu still believes that Pan Seok is a dirty cop who actually had a hand in sending the bad guy to kill him and his mother. That's a pretty major factor in his putting guilt onto Pan Seok.

Obviously!! I still don't understand why people keep saying that Dae Gu hates Pan Seok because he promised that he would protect them. I mean, he committed a terrible mistake and maybe he had a bit of hate for that fact... but that isn't the biggest problem. At first, it's obvious he blamed PS for that, but you have to understand he was just a kid who saw his mom die... and PS was the only adult to whom he could blame.. But if you guys remember, when he was in the school, a few hours later, and he calmed down, he called to PS and gave him all the information that he had. I think he could only give him that because he believed in him, believed that he was the only one who could help him, he obviously didn't hate him in that moment. The reason why DG still hates him, still blames him, is because HE THINKS that PS is involved in the crime of his mom. Because DaeGu heard the killer saying the name of PS, also PS was the only one who know that he was in the school, and suddenly the mom's killer also knew and PS was the only one who DG had told that the medallion was in his pocket, and then suddenly the killer had it.
THAT'S WHY HE HATES HIM, THAT'S WHY HE BLAMES HIM.

This drama, oh...one moment I cried, and next moment I laughed.
Dae Gu became detective to take revenge of his mom's death. Soo Sun wanted to fulfill her dad's dream to be a detective. Ji Gook chose investigation unit because no application open for traffic officer. And Tae Il wanted to avoid the table death and because he knows Sa Kyung. With such different motivations, they start to show their friendship, hopefully love their job, and become great detectives in the future. Nobody suggested designer cloths and heels, a female can dress casual and still look clean and professional and how about looking feminine as well.
Yes her wardrobe suits her character-loud, bossy, never shuts up...., and always hitting etc.... UNCOUTH describes her very well. I don't know, maybe the actress is partially to blame not sure. I am not impressed by her either.

Her hair needs fixing since Go Ara's extensions are obvious though.

Goodness, the woman is a junior police detective, not a fashion model or executive secretary. She is dressing the way a woman in that line of work SHOULD be dressing. How often does THAT happen in kdramas? The PD should win a special award for advancing the cause of feminism and common sense by letting a female character wear rational shoes.
I agree that this is probably the least flattering hair-do I've ever seen Go Ara wear. It emphasizes her round chin too much. But, alas, she can't help looking beautiful whenever she flashes those hazel eyes at a person.

This is one of the things I am most curious about. Will Pan Seok find out through connecting the dots on his own, will Soo Sun figure it out and tell him, will Dae Gu accidentally blurt something out, or will it be revealed as part of the master revenge plot? However he finds out, that initial confrontation is going to be EPIC with these two hotheads.

I feel there might be a renewed search for Ji Yong by Pan Seok since he's the last witness the murder and time is running out to punish the murderer. Plus he's back now to cause problems so the situation is even more dire.
It helps the ex-wife is part of the missing person's unit too. Perfect chance for them to work together.
Dae Gu also made a small mistake going back to Masan and having that guy (old friend?) see him so he's finally left some possible clues about his whereabouts.
Even if Soo Sun figures it out, I don't think she'd tell anyone. It's going to be awesome having PS figure it out though. Really can't wait.

lol well everyone else was there for some reason. You'd think that was the only thing going on the Seoul.
I'm kind of wary about her skills. She was wrong about what they should do. Using sympathy isn't right. Dae Gu is right in using empathy to understand him. Both husband and ex-wife don't seem all that good at their jobs tbh.

Seven people being held hostage is certainly the biggest thing that happened in that that precinct all day and probably all week. As a senior department head, it would be to the ex-wife's credit that she showed up to help.

Flaws -
Shouldn't the police assist in removing the schoolgirls from the "gas full" restaurant?
Why police never stopped /prevent
parents from approaching the restaurant?
All high ranging officers are there
How the rookies ever going to learn
LOL I know this is just a drama but I just can't help it not to notice and not be bothered.....

how can the police storm the place? they know there are hostages and that student with her neck on the line. in addition is the issue of the cut gas line. it's so dangerous when no one can really tell the frame of mind of the hostage taker.

Like many others, I love Daegu's scene with his mum. It brought tears to my eyes, especially in how Daegu reverted to his familiar accent with his mum. I thought that's a really good detail.
Regarding Pan Seok's legendary cop status, I'm thinking that maybe he's 'legendary' because of the ways he always goes all out to catch the criminals. Remember how he pulled out all stops during the chase in ep 1? Once he's on a case, he doesn't let go and this is due to Daegu's mum's death.
Just my interpretation. :)

can't agree less.. with the fight scene of DG & PS.. it felt soo real and intense..
But most epic scene for me is DG talking in satori accent with his mom on the beach.. That was no more less than a masterpiece acting.. Seunggi totally nailed it!
Can't wait for Wednesday to come, especially that the Boots killer is back!

Agree for both scenes. In all of Seunggi's drama, I've never seen him so full of rage before. Knowing that he is of a cheerful disposition, makes that scene even more awesome.
As for the scene with his mum - the display of vulnerability was simply fantastic. What I liked about his character here is that he didn't blame SS here. Only himself. He was tormented that he was too assured and cocky about his decision. Herein lies the difference in SS and his character. While DG is contemplative and quiet, SS just shoots off her mouth and is so needy. Instead of evaluating her mistake in the incident, she keeps trying to get DG to reassure her and when he doesn't, she berates him for leaving her alone to bear with the guilt. I really hope her character grows up.
There are 2 other scenes that I think Seunggi nailed. One was when he looked through his mother's case file. His reaction when he saw her photo was so painful and touching. He just emoted with his eyes and hand quivering hand. So good.
The other was when he tricked us by throwing his jacket over SS's face. He was so good at fooling us into thinking that he was going to cover her up with the jacket. I actually went, "Yes, yes! The gentlemanly DG is showing itself!" Only to laugh at the next moment when he threw the jacket over her face. Good one, Seunggi! You had us there!

I don't get why everyone is asking how could Dae Gu treat his superior like that when PS is the one who came into the room and kicked him with no warning. I wasn't aware being a person of authority gave you the right to beat people up when you are pissed off.
So, I'll chalk it up to they both went too far in the fight and DG disappeared soon after and there was no reason to punish him because he wasn't even there. When he came back he was in the middle of a hostage situation and there were more important things to deal with.
Now they'll probably just let bygones be bygones since it's over and done with.

I always imagine the Violent Crimes Unit like a type of family. Pan-seok and Eung-do are the parents and the Rookies are the problem children they adopted. Chief is the granny and Toad is that annoying relative who always puts the kids down. Even the way Soo-sun's face lit up when she heard Pan-seok's voice over the speaker was 'dad's here, everything's gonna be Okay now.' I'd prefer if there wasn't a love line between LSG and GAR, I kinda want them to just be partners, like Starsky and Hutch, or the Miss Congeniality girls, I forget their names now. That would be cute. And Tae-il and Gookie are seriously adorable. They just make me smile. This show is so fast-paced, it seems there's never enough time to accommodate everything and that's one of the things I love about it. I was smiling like a loon and laughing so loud until that end scene. I almost started crying when Dae-gu and Pan-seok were fighting, I kept yelling 'for the love of bromance, hajima!!!'

I love Cha Seung Won and my second love is Lee Seung Ki, I love their acting, they are the best just look at their scenes together and you are amazed at how much feelings these two guys can show, it is the best acting ever but really this drama is a mess, first they are detectives, unless the definition of detectives and the way they are promoted to that rank is different in Korea than in the US I don't see how four idiots like them can even make to that division sorry I looked for a better word, it is not inexperience it is just pure stupidity. I thought the order is, first they are in the academy then they are rookie cops after some experience and a lot of good cases and deductions they take a test and receive the next ranking to rookie detectives, these guys look like they couldn't even make it to work as security guards much less as detectives. They had the life of people in their hands and they are so irresponsible and everything goes under the rug like ok they are just starting, imagine the logic if they were doctors, kill a few patients and that make you a good one. I don't know, the plot is good but the holes in it are enormous. They say all the time they didn't want to be cops so why are they doing it, they are just messing with people's lives. I will watch anything with CSW in it but I am just a bit upset. Now the bad guy, in 11 years that have passed he never changed his boots, those are some strong ones. They look the same as the they did 11 years ago.

Let's be real where can you buy the same shoes you got 11 years ago, and what is the purpose??? Those boots are the ones he used to commit a crime, shouldn't he get rid of them fast the next day he killed the lady, they are loose ends... Come on, that makes no sense unless he is the worst criminal ever, he has the boots that can convict him.

Maybe he just likes that style of boots? Also, no one throws away a pair of shoes just because he used them while committing a crime. Unless he knows he left conspicuous tracks. Remember, the characters aren't watching the show, so they don't see what the camera sees.
Sadly, I wore a pair of dress shoes for so many years that my new wife had to tell me they were a decade out of date. And it was only then that I realized the leather was actually rotting away in spots.

Perhaps the 'boots guy' wants to torture Pan-seok to death! Maybe he wants him to continuously feel guilty over the case 11 years ago. They want him to never forget every detail of heartbreak and blame for that 1 unsolved case.
wow, I'm so curious... who could be that guy? Why he wanted Pan-seok to suffer that much? Why bother to come back after 11 years? Who's could be the master mind behind it all? Could it be someone inside Gangnam Police Station?
So many why's in my head... ^_^

May 22, 2014 at 3:06 AM
I know you like the show and it is ok but to defend this with that logic makes me even more upset. Who throws away a pair of shoes just because he used them on a crime? the one that doesn't want to get caught. Criminals burn their clothes the smart ones or the ones that are not so in love with the stupid boots. he comes back the same way he was 11 years ago. It makes no sense!!!! be a fan but don't rationalize it, it just makes no sense. He came back because the statute of limitations for his crime is about to expire, why return with evidence to be convicted. How? there is an eye witness that saw him with those boots killing his mother and then this witness threw acid on his face when he tried to kill him wearing the same outfit. Wow!!!! he is not watching he should be.

Maybe your husband kept those boots all those years but he didn't commit a crime in them I bet. The first thing a criminal does when he wants to get away with something, get rid of the evidence as well as tie loose ends... he stood on top of his mom to choke her, her blood might still be on those shoes, ridiculous if it is I know that, but with the writing of this drama I don't doubt it. He came back 11 years from abroad with the same boots... Give me a break.

Totally in agreement. CSW and LSG can carry just about anything but this is a crapfest. It's clear from having watched as many K-dramas as I have that law enforcement is a low-status profession in Korea. Cops are invariably incompetent, unprofessional and, usually, corrupt. Nobody comes off good in this drama. A leader who's supposed to be a kick-ass legendary cop but can't ensure his charges are adequately supervised. Rookies who are incompetent and clearly uninterested in being professional law enforcement officers. A young woman was almost killed! and all that happens is a dressing down from the incompetent supervisor? No probationary hearings, suspensions or even firings? Go Ara sheds a few tears and we're supposed to be happy this incompetent boob took back her resignation letter? I'm not connecting with anyone in this show. CSW and LSG deserve much better.

This was such a good episode! ^^
Soo Sun's performance was so strong when she had her outburst at Daegu and yelled at him to apologize.
It really touched me. I nearly cried.
I FREAKING loved the scene where the 4 rookies tackled the guy and really showed a team effort.
The way they incorporated the drama title in the scene was just perfect! :)
The last scene with the lovely cherry blossom trees was beautiful. Loved the feel-good vibes until the killer guy showed up.
But I'm excited for more action.
And more comedy too.

I love the mix of comedy and drama in this show. They do ridiculous things in serious situations, but not in such an extreme way that it feels contrived, it just feels like the natural way the characters would react. I love it.
And that scene with Dae Gu on the beach with mom! Holy cow, man. He had me sobbing when he asked "You're mad at me, right?" My little heart broke into a million LSG-shaped pieces.
I'm really looking forward to getting the backstory on our 4 rookies. They all appear to have interesting histories.
My hope for this show is that it keeps the comedy throughout. Since there isn't looking to be an idiotic love triangle, that will probably help with the lessening of the melo side, but still... just... don't do it, show. Don't take yourself too seriously. Please.
