Odds and Ends: Inheriting the drama gene
by javabeans
javabeans: So my parents are newly Roku’d and Hulu’d, which means they have finally discovered the joys of watching dramas at will, after decades of only watching whatever was on the TV every night (which, in LA, is pretty plentiful as the shows stick to the Korean broadcast schedule for dramas, only about a month behind).
girlfriday: Up until now they never watched anything that wasn’t just on at the time? That’s nuts.
javabeans: Well, my mom says she was afraid to get with the streaming program because she has an addictive personality and would get sucked in. Gee I wonder what that’s like.
girlfriday: But that’s like… WHY we watch dramas. To embrace the addiction.
javabeans: I know your parents are way more savvy than mine, so maybe this is no big deal, but for my parents it’s a huge step forward into the 21st century! Plus, now they get a choice of everything — for years the LA market was shut out of MBC dramas, so they weren’t able to watch those. Then in recent years it was SBS that was the holdout, so they’ve missed a lot of great shows.
girlfriday: Even though my parents have all those channels too, they were always the ones going to the video store every week (yunno, back in ye olden days of VHS) to pick the shows they wanted to watch. So now of course they have accounts with all the streaming sites available, in Korean and otherwise.
javabeans: I set up the Hulu queue with all the shows they’ve said they want, and some recommendations based on what I know they like. (So for my mother that’s Secret Garden and Queen Seon-deok and A Gentleman’s Dignity and You From Another Star.) They’re all there in the queue… and what does my mom beeline for first? Winter Sonata, for the thirtieth time.
girlfriday: LOL. She likes what she likes?
javabeans: What she likes is Yonsama.
girlfriday: One day your daughter will laugh at your love of Lee Min-ho. It’ll happen.
javabeans: NEVER! He will age like Jang Dong-gun — that is to say, gracefully and gorgeously — and nobody can mock Jang Dong-gun! Not for his looks, for sure. But surprisingly it’s been my dad who’s super into the Roku, apparently, and every night is glued to the TV for a couple more episodes of Dong Yi. I recommended Empress Ki to him since they both like Ha Ji-won and historicals, but my dad waved his hand and was all, “Nah, that one’s all wrong. They just make up history!”
girlfriday: Yeah that’s a no-no with dads. Why is it so predictable that dads watch sageuks (the dry boring ones are best, according to them)?
javabeans: They don’t even MAKE sageuks that are boring enough to please my dad anymore. They’re all too “flashy” and “exciting” and “entertaining” nowadays. Psh!
girlfriday: Ha. That’s like telling me it’s too good to watch. But then, I have equally confusing arguments with my mom too, because she likes Love Rain and Mary Stayed Out All Night. Hm, maybe my mom just likes Jang Geun-seok.
javabeans: My mom, circa You’re My Destiny: “This is the wooooorst drama I have ever seen, in my entire life! It’s terrible! Nothing makes sense! I can’t believe it’s a drama!” Me: “Are you going to stop watching?” Mom: “Well I want to know what happens.”
girlfriday: Both our moms liked Heirs. I was a snob to her all throughout dinner when she told me that.
javabeans: I couldn’t argue with my mother because she acknowledged every single complaint I had about the show, and then replied with, “I know, but it’s so cute!” And “I know, but I don’t care!” And “I know, but I like it!”
girlfriday: I had this really surreal experience a few weeks ago when my mother told me all about how she liked this band, and it was called CN Blue, and how they were so clean-cut and cute, and they were all in dramas and stuff. I died laughing.
javabeans: That must have felt like how I felt when my mom told me there’s this really cute pop star named Justin Timberlake who dances real good. With my dad, it’s like the conversation in the most recent episode of Witch’s Romance where he’s all about the old-school pop and trot songs and I’m the punk going, “Oh, didn’t Big Bang remake that?”
girlfriday: Ha, I loved that sequence.
javabeans: But taste is taste, I guess. My parents regularly ask me for recommendations since I know about stuff before they do, and they’ll nod and say, “Oh, that sounds fun, I’ll be sure to watch it.” And then I check back with them and they’re watching, like, Hundred Year Inheritance instead.
girlfriday: Right after Winter Sonata for the thirty-first time.
javabeans: Well, that Yonsama sure isn’t going to sit around appreciating himself. Okay actually, maybe he would. But there’s nothing quite like an ajumma’s adoration.
girlfriday: We should bottle it, like how celebrities make their own perfumes and stuff. Ajumma’s Adoration: The Official Pick-Me-Up to the Stars. We’ll be gazillionaires!

And the the Taiwanese F4 craze hit and my mom and all her friends were also crazy about jerry yan and zai zai!

I am sure glad that did not happen to me (as I cruise the internet searching for my 432nd k-drama fix).

So funny! It's as if you're talking about my mom. She loves Jang Geun-seok and all the dramas he's done, and CNBlue is her favourite band. She is so addicted to Kdramas. And it's all my fault, too. I made her watch a drama with me a couple of years ago (City Hunter) and she's been watching them ever since. Like non-stop. I think I've created a monster.

my mom doesn't like saeguks and rom-coms but she loves the long weekend dramas that talk about the different family members. All the series she has completed are at least 50 episodes long! Now I just point her to any series that has "family" in the description and she pretty much laps them up.

Point her at the KBS World YouTube channel, they have a lot of long series there, such as Angel's Revenge.

My dad and grandpa are avid kdrama watchers in denial. They're oretty tsundere about dramas. They'll never make their own suggestion and just watch along with my grandma and mom and complain about every single minute detail. And when I confront them about it and ask them why don't they stop watching it, if they think it's so bad they'll say there's nothing better to do or your mom and/or grandma hog the tv (we have more than one). But when my mom or grandma leave home and miss the shows they can always count on them to recap because they make sure to catch every single episode. And despite what they say they'll always watch the next drama. Both my dad and grandpa like action dramas but I caught them watching Temptation of Wife, Pink Lipstick and other crazy makjang stuff too.

So interesting to read about everyone's parents! I also inherited the drama addiction genes from my parents, but I can't watch dramas with them because they often read spoilers and comment over everything/every scene.
So a lot of the commentary is like this: "Has he died yet? I read that his girlfriend, who will turn out to be eeevil, is going to drown him." (30 mins later) "Oh, it's a lake. I GUESS HE'S GOING TO DIE NOW."

This is hilarious! So far, I am watching Kdrama alone in my family, but it's not for a lack of trying. Recently my aunt went into a rehabilitation center for her heart disease, and I sent her a get-well card. At least it looked like a get-well card, but over half the note I wrote was instructions on how to stream Coffee Prince on Hulu. Hopefully I'll have a new convert soon. Fingers crossed!

i just wish i could bottle some of you guys' snarkiness and knack for saying the right sassy thing at the right moment! send me 100 bottles if you ever do cause i could really use some for my kids. i was first into anything korean and i have 3 kids interested in kpop and anime so they will talk with me about them and watch a few kdramas with me. they share the things they like as well so it is fun.
i had a korean friend once tell me that it was no fun talking with me (he is into learning everything american) cause i sound and act so "korean" ! compliment to me~

Pretty much the reason why horribly written dramas like "Secret Garden" or TMTETS (or OK written dramas like YFAS) are huge hits while well-written dramas like "The Man Who Can't Marry" and "Miss Korea" struggled for viewers (this isn't just on the older viewers).

I wished I could bring more kdrama fans from my family. Last time I remember when trying to get my mom watched other kdrama (she had only watched Dae Jang Geum), I tried to lure her into Full House which was a huge hit back then. But after 5 minutes, she stopped watching and her reason was the most ridiculous I've ever heard. "The actress is ugly". And I was like : OMO OMO.. Song Hye Kyo's ugly ?? What about me mom ??? Seriously ??
But other than my own family, I succeeded making a lot of kdrama fans from my friends and their family.

Confession time. Its not just the moms and dads who make do with whatever is on at the time. I do that too. Im just too lazy to arrange my schedule around my fav dramas. Keeping to my workaholic life, most of the time i make do with recaps or otherwise catch up on during my off days. I'm pretty much thankful to dramabeans for the recaps.

this is a brilliant post!
i can't agree more with my parents as well. it's crazy how similar my parents are with javabeans'. though i would argue that my dad is more agreeable to the new sageuk flair with awesome action scenes.
thanks JB & GB.

Omg! Your mum is exactly like my mum. Except she still refuses to go on the internet bandwagon. My Dad says he likes to have something to do every night. And my mum says she can't get sucked in.
The last time I introduced her to the internet she couldn't get off for 3 days. Luckily her work is flexitime so she can just self declare a 3 day holiday. Cancel all meetings! For Jang Geun Seok!
And she can rewatch winter sonata so many times IDEK WHY.
I've refused to watch it since day one and have kept my pride for.... 10 years? hahahahaha

can relate with this!!!
Our family watched Three Days weekly together on a weekend because my mom loves Yoochun and my Dad loves action stuff!
Before that, we also watched SKKS, Rooftop Prince, I Hear Your Voice, Master's Sun, Athena, Iris, My Love From Another Star, School 2013.
it's actually fun watching a drama with your parents! you get new insights, comments, and stuff like that from a more mature perspective.
one thing i noticed is that they don't usually comment on the acting as much but more on the storyline. netizens really tend to be more critical when it comes to actors.

If it is any comfort to JB and GF and if you were fans of g.o.d in the ye ol' days, they are having a come back for the 15th album between Jul 12-13.
I would really like to hear your perspective about it if you were fans back then :)
