Kolorful Palette: Hostage hearts [You’re All Surrounded]
by Fanderay
About a month ago I was really excited for all the new dramas that were starting, but now I’m feeling more overwhelmed than anything since I’m having a hard time deciding which dramas to stick with. None of them swept me off my feet in their first week, but I feel like they all have potential and need to be given a proper chance. Based on cast alone it’s hard not to be optimistic about You’re All Surrounded, and this is probably the show I was most excited about, so I hope it delivers.
I chose this scene for a couple reasons. Mainly I found the contrast between the pose and the facial expressions pretty comical, but this was also the first time I felt any real chemistry between these two. Their arguing isn’t the kind that carries any sort of electric charge (unlike, say, Hyun-bin and Ha Ji-won in Secret Garden) but they do work well together when they’re in sync, so it was nice to see them sharing a brainwave for once. I get the impression that this is just the beginning, and that the team is really going to start coming together now.
In retrospect I do regret choosing this scene, but that’s just because I’m not happy with the drawing. I went in the wrong direction with it and the end result is all over the place. At least it was a learning experience! And don’t worry, I’ll do better next week.
This drama has a much more serious tone than I ever expected, but I’m still enjoying it, especially now that Dae-gu has some semblance of a personality (his pathetic broodiness was getting old fast). Even Pan-seok is a little one-dimensional, but I think all of that is going to change once everyone’s secrets begin to unravel. I’m a bit sad that Pan-seok is going to turn out to be a good guy because it would be so much more exciting to be surprised by the depths of his villainy, but I’ll still settle for some good old-fashioned character development.
I’m looking forward to episodes 5 and 6 now that it feels like the story is finally primed and ready to go, and I think they should give me a much better idea of how much I’m going to end up liking this drama. What show is everyone here enjoying the most right now?

I'm totally loving A New Leaf. It somehow became my crack drama. Who knew that a legal drama about amnesiac lawyers could be so addicting.

Whats so good about Golden Cross? Its sounds like very angsty melodrama. I adore the male lead actor, the leading actress is good in other things too. The revenge melodrama part is done well?
Im not used to revenge melodrama unless its really intense ala Nice Guy or has strong villains.

Count me in for your opinion of Golden Cross. Maybe revenge kdramas are just not for me because I adore the female and male leads but I just can't get into it :/

The plot is revengeful... I like how everyone is so scheme ..everyone is trying to get on top of each one..and how each actor is playing their part so we.. And as u mentioned the leads are so good...

What's so good about Golden Cross?
As a melodrama it is a thriller full of suspense and financial shenanigans plus a family unknowingly susceptible to the criminal acts of others.
Golden Cross is like a game of chess. Characters don't just give lip service and claim or pretend to do something once new information is discovered. The characters actually follow through with threats. Each of their actions and reactions matter and constantly change the game.
1) Michael Jang, Seo Dong-Ha, and Kim Jae Gab = 3 top-notch financial minds/brains battling against one another covertly and overtly.
2) Prosecutor Seo Yi-Re = stickler for pursuing justice and the truth while unbeknownst to her that it was her father that committed the murders.
3) Prosecutor Trainee Kang Do-Yoon = secretly seeks vigilante justice for the wrongful deaths of his murdered sister and father.
4) Hong Sa-Ra = walking a tightrope among the 3 financial wizards as she seeks revenge for past wrongs done to her family.

A New Leaf.
Who knew that this drama would go from wobbly introduction to great halftime in its run? I cannot get over how it dropped a fiancée into the story this week - the attorney's blank innocuous face was just precious. Like, who, me? And now a dark horse is about to up the ante.
This Kim Myung Min is yet a new version of himself. I like it a lot. He is so sure-footed with so little acting that is yet powerful enough to move mountains.
And what a great ensemble of supporting roles. Attorney Cha (Viki calls him CEO, but in a partnership form of business, there is no CEO - Managing Partner is more like it), Attorney Park (the best friend), intern (she's a fast learner), a fiancée and now a judge who might take Kim Seok Joo's place in the firm.
This week, we heard nothing about Sea Star victim compensation. Why do I suspect that this will reappear next week to drive a permanent wedge between Kim Seok Joo and Attorney Cha and get him expelled from the firm?

Doctor stranger the most.
And that is one of my fav scenes from YAAS! It was probably when I actually started warming up to the show a little.
(Will write more in a mo).

Yeah, so to conitnue.
Didn't initially find YAAS all that entertaining. For example i ep 1, I felt the opening intro dragged on for wayyy too long - not enough hijinks along the chase. Same with the scene with the suicidal worker, dragged on for way too long. In comparison, Dr Stranger may be flawed but it is highly entertaining and scenes zip by fast.
That being said, I checked out ep 6, and I see marked improvement. I do wish the writer would give more screentime to the other 2 male rookies, and she was starting to do that with the tall one in ep 6.
Anyway, I prefer when the show is more serious, and not forcing itself to be comical (like it was in the opening intro). Just my two cents.

I said I wouldn't start Big Man until it finishes airing so I can marathon it, but I ended up watching from the first episode. I love the main character.

I love BIG MAN. (It is my favorite so far.) I am DYING for the next episode. (What a cliff hanger.) I enjoy the characters. And (like always) I'm shipping for the 2nd leads. (I want him to end up with the younger sister.) I'm also enjoying A NEW LEAF. (I didn't start watching until the 4th episode aired, so I liked being able to see the first four shows all at once. I think that helped, because it really seemed to move s.l.o.w.l.y at first.
You're all surrounded was my (before the shows started) pick, but I'm having a difficult time staying interested. Usually there is just enough good stuff to keep me from turning it off for good. But COME ON SHOW, get it in gear.
And Angel Eyes. I wasn't even going to watch this, because I don't like soapy, maudlin tv. But "Dylan" is just such a cutie. (And I'm a sucker for dimples.)

It's been a while since I've seen such a sweetly written male lead in a Korean drama... often as you know, they start off as arrogant jerks / chaebol types. But in Big Man, the main character is a kind, thoughtful, generous, upright, yet down to earth blue collar guy. You can't help but fall in love with him... this is the kind of person girls should be with in real life~

Lol I too wanted Pan-seok to be the bad guy earlier. It's predictable for him to be a mentor. I was hoping they take a dark turn and make him really shady and villainous. They still could, and it would be huge shocker if they did, so who knows? Seung-gi and Ara haven't been oozing with chemistry in their fights. More like developing friendship which I prefer much more. I'm loving YAS, so it's good to see some art from you on it! :)
I dropped DS. Too convoluted and filled with plot holes I can't seem to justify in my head. Angel eyes was really awesome, right until the last 3-4 episodes. I haven't seen today's yet but it has been on stale-mate for god-knows-how-long. The writer is riding with the lead's chemistry and the cute factor but it's getting really old, really fast. I'm just hoping now that SW knows the truth, there will some up upward progress.
And now that we're at it, I just hate what they did with Ji-woon. Like WTF writers?!? He was such an awesome second lead because he may be too perfect, but they initially showed a healthy relationship b/w him and Soo-wan instead of a clingy one sided love. Another thing I loved was how well he treated Dong-joo and had so much respect for him. The jealousy factor in their professional lives never existed even if his crazy mother tried to create one. In just one episode they turned him into insane obsessed freak who can't understand simple korean.
They killed the friendship he had with both the leads, and now he's using blackmail to get his way. It's so annoying to see such a good character down the drain. If they were going this route, why bother making him so nice when they'd do a 180 without any explanation anyway? Gah. Such a waste.

I definitely think PS could have some hidden sides, especially since he's been shown to be so good lately. I wouldn't be surprised if he's not totally innocent in everything. Though ultimately he can't be too bad or Dae Gu won't forgive him and we won't get bromance.
And yeah, I love friendship that develops into romance. I kind of dig he wasn't all that interested before (well he is now) and she was only slightly interested as kid. She's slowly working her magic on him. I actually like seeing an attraction growing and not just instantly there. Plus the whole idea that Dae Gu has to take time out from his spying and planning to now worry about Soo Sun is just kind of hilarious in itself.

I'm falling for You're all surrounded. Seriously, when will we get to see Seung Gi playing a serious HOT super smart guy (his boddy is woooooow) , with Seung Won ahjushi and the gorgeous Ara, before he enlists. The show is great, and I quote girlfriday's
"You know what’s funny about this show is that it’s a comedy for everyone else and a thriller for Seung-gi, but somehow it works because he’s playing the humorless hero of his own revenge tale who isn’t aware that the meta situation is funny" that's exactly what the show is perfectly showing. I hope the Ji Yong burried deep inside Dae Gu will come back to life and we'll see our romantic sweet Seung Gi again.

I understand how you feel. I was so excited about the new dramas that started airing from Mon-Sun. Except Friday. (hard to replace my fav Emergency Man and Woman on Friday )> But after I started watching the dramas, there is none I feel very attached to. They are all okay with a few interesting bits. But nothing I am attached to. I feel we are experiencing a great number of high turnover dramas. The script writers are rushed and the filming is always done in a hurry. There is no time to properly get into characters and increasing amount of young idols trying their hand at acting but not very good at it.
Few dramas have touch me as much as those 5 or more years ago. Very often even if the acting are good. The drama is let down by badly written script. Stories with good start but they cannot follow the same flow by the middle or the end.
Fewer and fewer dramas can delivery well from start to finish. Such a shame, I really hope the industry will address this problem and not just concentrate on making a fast buck. Good dramas cannot be rushed to get finished.

YAAS didn't really get me until episode 6. I did enjoy it before though. But the kiss and Soo Sun finding out just made everything click for me. It's also one I'm really looking forward to the most for PS and DG working out their issues. Dae Gu is also thawing a little and the petty jealousy Kdrama era is about to start from him so I'm super excited now.

Am watching it all. Enjoying it all kind of.
You are all surrounded - too serious for me, I just want the show to be fun when there is so much potential. Hoping it delivers !
Doctor stranger - its just all over the place with nothing making much sense but the strange thing is it doesn't matter if its not making any sense. Am just entertained . and sometimes entertainment is enough , may not be my crack and I don't have any wish regarding this drama either but am entertained. Keep doing it, and I will enjoy you till end.
A new leaf - Surprisingly its holding my attention, but the legal jargon is just going over my head. My mind gets automatically tuned out and am disengaged most of times. Yet sticking with it for now !
Finally I got tired of being overwhelmed and marathoned a drama I long missed ,over this weekend, reply 1997!
So right this moment, my drama craving is satisfied. No idea how the week is gonna make me !
Fanderay, do go back to old favorites ! On going dramas are fun in their own way with discussions and frustrations coming out, but instead of going back and searching the scene to draw from the week's picks(with nothing that satisfying) try your favorites!!
This might be due to sudden desire to see a Joon Hee and Yoon Jae painting !
I finally got what everyone was bitching about in 1994 with Baro's gay character not treated right.

I just love witch romance, don't you?! Next to that I am watching YAS, doctor stranger and triangle. The last two I cannot figure out, so many plot holes, but for now still interesting. Last week I stopped watching Angel Eyes, I just coundn't watch it any more with the direction it went, so typical and annoying. I did love the young cast with Kang Na Eul.
Now totally hooked on Jang Kook becomes Dallae, the weekend drama. It's becoming cuter now they met again, eventough there are still some parts that I skip, with Dahae's mother. But overall, really nice drama!

I'm not watching YAS, not after episode 1 anyway, but this drawing makes me feel like I should pick it back up. It can't be any more plot-holey than DS anyway, and I kind of liked the vibe between Dae-gu and Soo-sun.

I love You're All Surrounded. It's become my top drama currently out of the plethora that I am watching. I also love Doctor Stranger. Big Man is interesting as well. Triangle is getting interesting. But A New Leaf, I feel like I am forcefully watching it. It doesn't really grasp my attention. Most of the time I have no clue what they are talking about. It takes me a whole day to watch one episode.
