Kim Hyun-joo offered KBS weekend drama
by javabeans
You know, I’ve wondered why Kim Hyun-joo seems to have such an affinity for long weekend dramas when I can see her headlining miniseries just as readily, but she seems to like the format, and is eyeing another one to add to her resumé: KBS’s upcoming What’s With This Family. (Kim’s last three dramas were weekenders: Cruel Palace, Dumb Mom, and Twinkle Twinkle.)
What’s With This Family previously announced several potential castings in its younger generation, with Park Hyung-shik, Seo Kang-joon, and Nam Ji-hyun all in the mix. The drama sounds like it’ll carry all the familiar trappings of weekend family shows, which center around a large cast of characters and deal with family conflicts and relationships.
Kim Hyun-joo’s character would be the eldest daughter of a family who works as the head of a secretarial department of a large company. That means she’s got a pretty spiffy professional life, but her personal life is a lot less shiny: Thirteen years ago she suffered a crushing heartbreak, after which she eschewed all interest in marriage, men, and love, living a “dried-out life” ever since. Sounds like an interesting character with a lot of room for interpretation and growth, which would suit Kim Hyun-joo nicely—she has such a pleasing arua onscreen, with a lovely thread of sincerity in her characters. Well, when she’s not being murderous and scheming, I suppose (see: Cruel Palace).
The drama comes from writer Kang Eun-kyung of Baker King Kim Tak-gu and Gu Family Book, and will follow Wonderful Season. It’ll premiere in August.

I personally love her (and Ji Jin Hee!) in Ms Kim's Million Dollar Quest. It's a pretty old drama, light and funny. :)

I liked her in BOF as well. She was also good in Partners (I haven't fully seen her other dramas, only a few episodes here and there). She was also the lead (I think) in "Insoo is Pretty."

I have been a fan of hers since Glass Slippers. Really old drama but was one of those epics that i watched in the early days when i first started watching dramas on my own.
both her and So Jisup were soo young.

I recognise her as Gu Jun Pyo's sister, loved her too.
Still wary of that writer, despite what looks like it'll be a stellar cast. At least this time they're not messing around with supernatural stuff so we won't have poor worldbuilding and arbitrary rules dictating what happens, and if it gets high ratings (this writer+KBS weekend drama slot) then it's good for the cast.

Yay! I miss her. I couldn'd finish Cruel Palace bc she was so evil! I am glad she's back to a "normal" character.

I'm thinking that her age is working against her when it comes to the primetime dramas - she never hit Go Hyun Jung/Kim Sun Ah heights for it to not matter. Frowny face :-(

I like her, but if she keeps appearing only in longlonglong weekenddramas I'll never see her again...
She made recently a cameo appearance in Can We Love.

Kim Hyun-joo likes having steady work. It is nice to know you are going to have a job 25 weeks out of the year.

I keep thinking that she could have been awesome in Witch's Romance, although Umh Jung Hwa is doing a great job there!

Kim Hyun-joo has been one of my fave actresses since I saw her (and So Ji-sub!!) in Glass Slippers. Also liked her in Partner and Twinkle Twinkle.
BUT...the writer of King of Baking and Gu Family Book?!? After the craptastic disastrous ending of GFB, I will more than likely steer clear from her work...don't want to get burned again :/
I'm one of those that don't wonder why she's been seemingly doing weekend dramas -- she probably isn't getting (good) offers for weekday dramas, even if she does have the ability to do them well...like Kim Ji-hoon. I think it's very unfortunate.
