Jung So-min, Hong Jong-hyun pair up in horror-romance
by javabeans
Cute pairing alert! Jung So-min (Big Man, Could We Marry) and Hong Jong-hyun (Dating Agency Cyrano) have just been cast as the leads in an upcoming horror-romance movie called Alice.
My first reaction to the casting was to think that they must’ve been coupled up before, only to realize my brain was making a few shortcuts thanks to the White Christmas connection, considering that drama basically gathered together all of the next generation’s leading men before they were famous. Consider this: Jung So-min acted with Sung Joon in Can We Marry; Sung Joon was in White Christmas with Hong Jong-hyun. She also acted in Can We Marry with Kim Young-kwang, another White Christmas alum. And Jung So-min is acting in Twenty with Kim Woo-bin, who was also in White Christmas. All roads lead to White Christmas.
Back to Alice, which is inspired by the classic Alice in Wonderland story, only told with a nightmarish bent. (I’d argue that Wonderland is nightmarish enough in the straight version, but that’s beside the point.) Jung So-min goes searching for the source of her terrible nightmares and finds a pension named Wonderland, which is where she meets a mysterious young man who’s caretaker over the property. Jung’s character is a hardened soul who rediscovers that sense of thrill in a time that’s at once “both beautiful and cruel.”
The project sounds vaguely familiar to the movie titled Alice that had once cast Kim Yoon-hye (then named Woori), although that project appears to have stalled in development. But perhaps Alice in Wonderland is just popular enough an idea to base multiple macabre stories around, and this one is actually based loosely around a real-life incident that occurred in 1979 in Gyeonggi-do. The movie will mix in fantasy and horror elements, though, so I don’t expect it to hew too closely to the actual case.
Alice will begin shooting in June, and plans to release at the end of the year.

She was great in Can We Marry - I rooted for her character eve though she was quite abrasive and cold at times. I still remember the scene where she confronts her best friend (Han Groo's character) over her betrayal - the way she delivers her line oof
The project sounds interesting but I'm a chicken when it comes to horror so unfortunately it's a no go for me. Especially an Alice-themed film (I'm with you jb - the original Alice was nightmarish enough)

That drama was pretty near flawless - people who were written as flawed but all too real, all played by one of the best ensemble casts I've ever seen in a kdrama. That scene between So-min and Han Groo was fantastic, because both actresses held up their end so well. (and Han Groo getting lead in a drama too, I am THRILLED).
And of course, any young actress who can go toe to toe with the great Lee Mi-sook and hold her own......I thought Playful Kiss was a bit of fluff but JSM's performance in CWGM was masterful, petty pouting and all.

The Six Degrees of White Christmas have yet to fail lol. It's getting harder and harder to find a drama that doesn't eventually lead to it.

There's a drama forum I'm on where LollyPip is a mod and we've played Six Degrees of White Christmas. It makes that drama a 'must watch' if you ask me!

As for this article, I'm really excited about it. White Christmas is one of my favorite dramas and Hong Jong-hyun was my favorite in it. I think he and Jung So-min are a great potential pairing!

crazy connections, is what they've got. as long as they don't try to produce the shows themselves, it's all good.

While they definitely have questionable management and business practices at times, they have been around long enough to have cultivated significant partnerships, alliances, contacts and clout. I think a lot of people don't realize that they're a 25 year old company - in that sense, they've been around the block a few times and know what they are doing. In addition, they are quite good at PR and getting their talent out there (as long as they view you as a priority).
In addition, I think it's easier to be an actor under them than a singer. The actors seem to get more of the perks (more freedom and the connections, of course) with less of the negatives (being worked to death, little privacy, little freedom, carefully created public personas/group images to maintain) that the singers have to deal with.

(as long as they view you as a priority).
With her, I really hope they do. She's too good to be spending any more time in second lead territory, especially when there's been a dearth of early/mid-20something network tv leading ladies, and the roles for leads in that age range go either to idols, actors of questionable talent, or Park Shin-hye.
Baek Jin-hee in Triangle is the only one I can point out who seems to have recently moved into female lead territory with Triangle, and I hope JSM joins her soon - or rejoins her, I should say.

yeah, if they invest even a quarter as much effort into promoting this gem of a young actress, as they did on Lee Yeon-hee and Go Ara in the years when they weren't doing well on the acting front, Jung So-min should have a solid career ahead of her.
(now please get her back into lead roles, SM!)

Add to that point the fact that she is incredibly talented and has the "it" factor. If I remember correctly, she was getting CF offers left and right when she debuted.
I think other than the obvious connections the company has, her talent (which is lacking in many of the actresses of her generation) is also getting her roles. I think she has it in her to become really big, and SM knows.
I don't mind, SM. Go ahead with your game. The girl's got it.

Jung So Min? YES!!! This pairing? Yes! The synopsis? Ehhhh.
I'm always happy to see JSM in a new project. I just wish it she was cast as the lead in some epic tragic romance story. Something like "The Princess' Man"!

Another news states that aside from horror-romance, it'll actually also be a romantic comedy-
"The movie has been described as both a horror film and a romantic comedy and is supposedly based on a real event that took place in 1979. While "The Master's Sun" presented a new genre of drama, the horror romcom, this film may be the first k-movie that attempts to combine all these elements."
So I guess it won't be that scary to watch afterall. Saw the pair's first pics together from the screen test. Cute pairing indeed! Jung So Min as always had great chemistry with her co-stars so it's no surprise that she'll have the same with Jong Hyun.

LOVE the pairing. Basically, I love all the young men from White Christmas, and I love Jung So-min, so there.....
I just hope it won't be too scary. Horror is not my cup of tea, but I'll watch this for the pair.
Btw, what's Kwak Jung-wook doing after School 2013 and Adolescence Medley ?

It feels like pretty much the only next-gen leading man who wasn't in White Christmas is Lee Jong-seok.......though he and everyone else are linked to it anyway via the Six Degrees connection. (seriously, whichever young man wasn't in the drama seems to have worked with at least two other people who were!)
