Jung Il-woo courted for ghostbusting sageuk Night Watchman
by girlfriday
EEEEEEEE! Jung Il-woo starring in The Records of a Night Watchman? Whose palms do I need to grease to make this happen? The upcoming MBC supernatural fusion sageuk is already the summer drama I was most excited about, but if they can get Jung Il-woo (Gold Rainbow, The Moon That Embraces the Sun) to headline, someone might have to peel me off the floor.
The fantasy fusion sageuk drama comes from the production house behind Sungkyunkwan Scandal, and this time a Joseon F4 will be made up of a group of night watchmen who patrol the palace after curfew and keep the king and his citizens safe from things that go bump in the night. I suppose that could mean all manner of nasty monsters, but primarily they hunt ghosts. PD Lee Joo-hwan of Jumong and Shin Don will be directing, and Yoo Dong-yoon of King and I and King’s Dream will be writing.
I can’t wait to see who else they cast for the foursome—it’ll be three guys and one girl, naturally, in Sungkyunkwan fashion. Maybe this time since they’re patrol officers, she’ll be a damo and not have to be a crossdressing boy-girl, not that I ever get bored of crossdressing dramas. It actually sounds a lot like You’re All Surrounded transplanted to the Joseon era; just a little less crime-fighting, a little more ghostbusting. A supernatural premise, a Scooby Gang of four friends falling in love and growing up while saving the world from scary monsters? I’m SO IN.
Word is that Jung Il-woo is currently in negotiations with the production to star. He’s no stranger to the fusion sageuk (The Moon That Embraces the Sun, The Return of Iljimae) so he should be right at home. It hasn’t been long since he wrapped his recent weekend melodrama Gold Rainbow (but let us not speak of the downward spiral that was that show); I’m just glad he’s headed back to dramaland so soon.
The Records of a Night Watchman will air on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning in late July, following Triangle.

let me squee with you girlfriday! I suffered through golden rainbow till almost the end but couldn't get to finish line. I skipped several
episodes and caught the last one which was ridiculous beyond belief although everyone got their happy ending.
I can't seem to get into anything exc flower grandpa post SLA. I guess I am one of those still consumed by that drama. so I am looking forward to having something to look forward to again.
do it, il woo ah!!

Can I just say dito dito dito.
While I am predisposed for anything Jung Il-woo is in, this seems like a dream combination.
Unfortunately I can't wish triangle over, so I will have to learn that thing call patience, I heard it helps.

We didn't get to see his full mane of glory in Moon that Embraces the Sun. If this casting happens, for the love of all that's good and holy give us an Iljimae-esque mane in this drama. Pretty (no pun intended) please!

***WARNING POSSIBLE MTETS SPOILERS BELOW***
Someone cast Song Jae Rim as part of the watchmen foursome, because he needs to have fun with Jung Il Woo's character and erase that tragic bromance in Moon Embracing The Sun from memory. T___T

He was pretty awesome in Two Weeks also, although I guess it would be more appropriate to say he LOOKED pretty awesome as Killer Kim, since his role was all action stunts and very few lines. Regardless, that was where I discovered and fell in love with SJR and I haven't looked back since.

I'm not just saying this for SJR, but I really need a good ending for JIW. METS killed me. T_____T I need JIW reprising his cheeky character and reuniting with all of the people in METS. Even if only in cameo!
(now for a sorta serious comment)
I know JIW should be stretching his acting chops and stuff, but he's REALLY GOOD at cheeky roles and we NEED him in this. The only way this would be better is if Song Joongki was part of the foursome. Then they'd destroy our screens with their adorable-ness.
I guess it's a good thing SJK is in duty right now....

But I also don't want him to pull out of the MuDo project (Mainly because I really really want to see JIW cheerleading)
If the schedules do overlap, either he needs to pull a LSG or we need a cloning machine stat.

I Do. Wait, that was not the question here.
I still do.
Jung Il Woo has to be the sneaky one who finds shortcuts while others go by the book, in such a story.
although his character in Golden Rainbow was just the kind of hero I like - strong moral core, sneaky and playful on the outside, but straightforward in his words - I could not suffer to the end. or actually I quit when they killed Dad.
Somehow I have a suspicion this story is too easy for Jung Il Woo. He needs to play more complicated, multidimensional characters. For his skills, a plain this or that characters would be no challenge.

I watched jung Ill woo in flower boys and thought he was a dream. When he got a part in moon embraces the sun I was so happy for him. I saw the show and felt that he was not shining. I watched his other sageuk and felt he didn't shine there either. I think that maybe, just maybe, that type of drama is not his strength. Maybe 3rd time is the charm, but I have a feeling that he should stay away from sageuk dramas.

FINALLY! I have had some serious Jun Il Woo withdrawal. I rewatched Flower Boy Ramyun Shop last winter just because I missed him. (Because I don't care how much I love an actor, I suffer through those bloated weekend slog dramas for NO man.) He was painfully underutilized and undercast in Moon/Sun if you ask me so I feel like I haven't seen him in forever.
So now I hear he might be the lead in a fusion sageuk again!!!!!! Words cannot express my happiness (or my disappointment if he turns this down).

I still cannot figure out why Moon/Sun was so popular. I thought there was no chemistry between two leads. I agree that Jung Il Woo was really underutilized in the drama.
Jung Il Woo just saved my son today. With this news I was in such a good mood today. When my son told me that he did terribly with AS exam( a part of A level exams: entrance exam to uni in UK) in Economics, I paused myself and told him that as far as he understands basic economics, it would be all right. He is painfully slow in writing so that AS economics with an essay was a torture to him. Anyhow usual me would have yelled at my son but thanks to Jung il Woo news, I kept my calmness.

The child leads, though, THEY were perfection.
Adult leads had no chemistry, and Han Ga-in seems to think that the only way to emote in a sageuk is by widening her eyes to different degrees and having the body language of an ajumma while playing a 21 year old. We get it, you have big eyes, but god she sucked so bad...

I really hope all goes well for this drama. Jung Il Woo getting a lead role in a major network drama is long overdue. Given the plot, I'm all on board for this one. I would LOVE to see Seo Kang Joon in this, but he's rumored to be in the weekend drama that airs after the one Taecyeon is in. Even though I would prefer to see Seo Kang Joon in Night Watchman, a monster hit weekend drama on KBS ala Ojakgyo Bros/My Husband's Got a Family/My Daughter Seoyoung can be a major boost to his career if it's a huge hit. He would definitely gain popularity with the older audience who are a captive audience for those dramas. But if Night Watchman is as buzzworthy as SKKS was, he could get the same career boost that Song Joong Ki and Yoo Ah In did. Night Watchman will be up against Trot Lovers and Temptation so who knows which drama will walk away a hit. But I think with Seo Kang Joon just being 20, he probably could pass on the family drama and do one later when he'd actually get a role on par with what Joo Won had in Ojakgyo Brothers. A supernatural sageuk produced by the people who did SKKS doesn't come around that often. If the producers do as good a job with the casting as they did with SKKS it could be great. SKKS had a solid F4. As much as I love Rooftop Prince, it felt more like a King and his sidekicks than an F4. With SKKS, each member of the F4 could have been the lead that's how great those characters were. I'm hoping the same is the case for Night Watchman.
