Doctor Stranger: Episode 5
by gummimochi
Feelings are manipulated left and right now that Maybe First Love has reappeared in Hoon’s orbit, throwing his perspective (and a few others) into chaos. Little does he know that there’s more to the sweetheart-he-might-have-seen than meets the eye, but at least he can debate medical ethics to pass the time until he figures that out. I never thought that’d there be so many people in this dramaverse whose main concern is whether Hoon is employed or not, but hey, I get it—more people get to live when the doctor is in.
On our ratings o’ meter, the numbers keep climbing for Doctor Stranger as Episode 5 hit 14.0%.

EPISODE 5 RECAP
Jae-joon tenses to see Soo-hyun sobbing in Hoon’s arms, but rather than intervene, he walks out of the operating room unnoticed. Having been let off the bribery hook, Nightshade puts in a call to Prime Minister Jang and reports that he’s on his way to the hospital to check on “that woman.”
He’s here to see Seung-hee, whose face he immediately recognizes from Budapest. Unable to deny the resemblence, he whispers, “She really looks like her.”
In flashback, we rewind to when Hoon had first seen Seung-hee, now replayed in her perspective. Ah, so she’d seen his reflection and knew that he’d been following her through the hospital. Curious, indeed.
Things only get even stranger from there because we see Seung-hee drive up to Patient Kim’s home. Seeing Soo-hyun waiting outside, Seung-hee recalls being given a file (from Agent Cha, it seems) on her and her mother. Hm, these meetings do seem to support the theory Seung-hee might be a spy; judging from her clothes, was this a recentish assignment?
She introduces herself to Soo-hyun, expressing sympathy for her loss. Handing her the keys, she explains that she’d been living here with the patient at her request because of her treatment. Hearing that her mother was lonely only bothers Soo-hyun, since she remembers differently.
But as she walks through the courtyard, memories of happier times with her mother come flooding back to her: painting together, marking her growth on a wooden pillar.
Seung-hee brings out a box containing presents Soo-hyun’s mother had bought for her daughter every year. Soo-hyun takes out a sketchbook filled with drawings of her, smiling at both the mundane and important moments of her life.
Seeing those only confuses her more, as she’s unable to believe that her aloof mother kept watch over her, even at a distance. She’s told that they were her mother’s attempts to relieve her self-resentment, believing that her daughter would be happier with her father.
Soo-hyun refuses to believe it, even though her tears betray her words. After seeing another drawing illustrating when she was sent away, Soo-hyun look up to see her mother before her with tears in her eyes as well. “I thought that it’d be enough to make you happy,” she says.
Now Soo-hyun gets to hear the words she’d always longed for: “I cried every day because I wanted to see you. I always missed you, my daughter.” She breaks down in her mother’s bosom as both women shed tears… but then the camera reveals that it’s actually Seung-hee who’s comforting her.
Back at the hospital, Hoon is questioned by his colleagues on his judgment to proceed with Patient Kim’s surgery despite the low success rate. Jae-joon gives him the most, if not all the heat about it, dismissing Hoon’s reasoning by pointing out that the patient died on the table.
When Soo-hyun arrives late to the meeting, Hoon apologizes to her again with a deep bow. At the mention that they’re here to discuss the case rather than hear apologies, Soo-hyun speaks up to say that Hoon did everything they could and suggests that they move on.
But Jae-joon isn’t willing to let go that easily and inquires why Hoon performed the operation. Hoon starts to defend himself, but then stops himself mid-sentence, recalling Soo-hyun’s earnest request. So he switches gears and turns on his cavalier attitude, saying that he believes it’s a doctor’s duty to perform surgery even with one percent chance of success.
Jae-joon challenges that statement—didn’t Hoon want to show off his surgical skills? “You did this. Understand?” he grits out. Oh snap, things just got personal.
He demands to hear an answer, so Hoon plays at his game with the truth: “I did it for money.” We know that it was a 500 won coin, but the room interprets that to mean that he was paid off and takes issue with the ethical decision. Jae-joon scolds him as much, and then Hoon walks over with determined eyes…
… and then jokes that he isn’t proud of it since he’s already worried that he’ll be fired as it is. He’s ready to call an end to this meeting, but Jae-joon pulls him back, ordering him back on the stand. When Hoon doesn’t move, Jae-joon says he can go but gives him one more insult: “You’re not even a doctor.”
Hoon momentarily tenses before laughing the moment off. He concurs with Jae-joon’s words, though he points out that nobody here performs surgery for free, much to the room’s grumbling. He turns serious again to answer Jae-joon’s question as to why he went through with the operation: “Because I wanted to become a doctor. A doctor is supposed to treat the sick!”
Hoon then challenges Jae-joon’s intentions for not doing so—because it would risk his surgical success rate? “Is a doctor only supposed to operate on patients with a high rate of success? There are people who want and ask us to save those patients! Is a doctor someone who gives up on surgery and leaves the patient to die?”
With that, Hoon storms out of the room, where his bravado fades into regret. He agrees with Doctor Moon that he momentarily lost his mind, then smiles, “It’s not like I said anything wrong anyway.”
Soo-hyun stays behind to voice her disappointment in Jae-joon for taking his anger out on Hoon. She argues that her mother’s surgery was beyond his skills and that one family member (herself) requested it, but Jae-joon reminds her that the other didn’t. Hearing about her gratefulness towards Hoon for doing everything he could clearly bothers Jae-joon, who fumes silently.
Hoon apologizes to Chairman Oh in person for losing the patient, though, he’s told that if anything, he should be begging for forgiveness for disobeying orders. Hoon is fired from this moment on, to which Hoon gets on his knees (and Doctor Moon hilariously follows suit. Everything that man does is oddly comedic).
Despite Hoon’s vow that it won’t happen again, Chairman Oh sticks to his decision. Once the chairman leaves, Hoon rises and sees Soo-hyun standing at the staircase, having overheard everything. He tells her that he heard Chairman Oh is her father and asks if she can’t pull some strings for him so that he can stay.
Given Hoon’s frustrated reaction, I’m going to guess that’s a no. But then he takes a call from Smuggler Im, who has good but panicked news: he’s found Jae-hee. He tells Hoon to meet him at the clinic with payment in hand. We see Smuggler Im drive off, but his getaway doesn’t go unnoticed by a nine-fingered shadow.
However, Smuggler Im isn’t at the clinic, and Hoon is re-directed to a busy intersection nearby. Just then, someone emerges from the shadows—it’s Agent Cha, who raises his gun to shoot.
Hoon and Chang-yi try to maneuveur through the oncoming traffic as Agent Cha readies his gun. And just as Hoon approaches, he shoots at a truck of doom which slams into Smuggler Im’s car, then returns to the shadows whence he came.
Unharmed, Hoon rushes over to get to Smuggler Im, who manages to utter a few words before slipping into unconsciousness. They carry the smuggler back to the clinic (where Doctor Moon’s nose-breaking gag continues) and Hoon uses his genius to examine Smuggler Im’s condition and spots a shard embedded in the man’s heart.
Doctor Moon says they should wait until emergency help arrives, but Hoon barks that it’ll be too late then—they have to operate immediately. Hoon goes in and removes the shard, and Doctor Moon is amazed that Hoon can see anything in that pool of blood.
Hoon dismisses the question, saying that he doesn’t see but just knows, and the two work together to complete the operation. Smuggler Im is taken away by an ambulance… as Agent Cha watches the events unfold from his car.
Once they’re at the hospital, Hoon insists on doing the surgery, to which Soo-hyun reminds him that he can’t. Noting his protests that they must save this man, she tells him that they’ll take it from here. There’s no further action needed on the patient, however, since Hoon did all the work.
Hoon reassures Chang-yi that the smuggler ajusshi will be fine. He pulls his friend into a hug, relieved at the idea that they’ll be able to find Jae-hee soon. Chang-yi balls her fist at the physical gesture. Does someone have a crush on their buddy?
At a fancy bar, Chi-gyu flirts with a girl before joining Jae-joon, who’s busy stacking shotglasses into what he calls an impenetrable castle. He places a shotglass on top to represent the princess and says there’s a knight who desires this castle. His metaphorical scenarios really do say a lot about his character, don’t they?
Slurring his words, he agrees with how the knight must be a good fighter and also capture the princess’s heart to appease the lord of the castle. Yet the issue is that the knight feels uneasy whenever he sees the princess.
“He fell in love,” Chi-gyu concludes. “A knight can’t do that if he wants the castle—that’d be fraud.” Jae-joon actually seems troubled by those words. Huh, were his feelings and intentions towards Soo-hyun disingenuous? How much did you know about her beforehand?
Jae-joon heads back to the hospital to confront Soo-hyun on her way out, and apologizes for not going against Chairman Oh’s orders. He admits that he did take it out on Hoon—at first he thought it was a matter of pride, but he couldn’t stand how Soo-hyun took Hoon’s side over his. “I really hated it.”
A tear falls as Jae-joon says he knows she was doing the right thing, but he couldn’t control his emotions. She thanks him for his honesty and he pulls her into a tighter hug. “I’m sorry.”
And then there’s a notable change in both Jae-joon’s eyes and the music as he looks up at the hospital. Ah, the castle.
Soo-hyun returns home in a better mood, though, that quickly fades when her father Chairman Oh tells her that there’s no need to sit. Is it odd that an enormous table only has three chairs? That’s because douchey half-bro Sang-jin will take her place in hospital administration, and though that decision upsets her, she accepts without complaint.
While the cardiothoracic surgical team reviews Smuggler Im’s case the next day, they’re interrupted when the police show up. Ha, I love how Chi-gyu immediately hides and whispers that he didn’t know the woman he flirted with was married.
But the cops are here to see Hoon, who rolls awake behind them, looking disheveled. HA, did no one know he was there? It turns out the police are trying to find the shooter who instigated the traffic accident, and Hoon leads them upstairs, unaware that Agent Cha is wheeling Smuggler Im out of the hospital.
So you can imagine his shock to be told that Smuggler Im is in fact, gone, and astounded that no one knows why. He receives a text from the smuggler claiming that he’s left for China, but when Hoon tries calling back, we see Agent Cha dispose of the phone.
At the Blue House, the president worries over Prime Minister Jang’s health and says that he put the charges of bribery to rest… for now. Prime Minister Jang sneers at the president’s belittlement of him and is furious to hear that Hoon has been fired from the hospital.
Soo-hyun explains to Chairman Oh that Hoon performed her mother’s surgery at her request, so she’s willing to accept the consequences. She was always an obedient daughter, he reminds her, and he gave her a chance to explain herself, but she chose to say nothing then.
She asks her father to forgive Hoon, but Chairman Oh asks what this is really about.
Chang-yi wonders if the smuggler ajusshi was just scamming them about seeing Jae-hee, but Hoon believes that he was being truthful then. Noting the security cameras throughout the building, Hoon asks if Chang-yi actually saw Jae-hee here.
Actually getting to see those tapes is another problem altogether since Hoon is promptly ushered out despite his persistent efforts. Chang-yi comes running to inform him that her mother saw Jae-hee in the North two years ago.
We hear the story from Chang-yi’s mother herself, as she recounts how she and Jae-hee were at the same prison camp. Already wounded, Jae-hee would mumble Hoon’s name over and over for days in her feverish state. When the doctor came to see her, it was already too late—Jae-hee was dead.
Hoon storms out, convinced that Jae-hee is still alive. Chang-yi tells him to snap out of it, but Hoon clings onto the hope that Jae-hee’s image was captured on video. He walks past Soo-hyun, who just happened to be present for this exchange.
A senior nurse wonders why an exceptionally skilled doctor like Hoon was fired. Doctor Yang puts that curiosity to rest and asks how she’s doing. She says she isn’t alone anymore (omo, is she pregnant?) and turns to see him gone, leaving an energy drink behind. Aw, that’s sweet.
We turn back to Soo-hyun and Chang-yi’s conversation, as the latter explains that Hoon took this job to pay for the money to smuggle his sweetheart into the South. She even tells her that Jae-hee almost escaped once before being taken back to North Korea, but now Jae-hee is presumed dead.
Next thing you know, Soo-hyun pulls Hoon aside to ask if he can confirm Jae-hee’s face on camera. Hoon refuses to believe the claims that Jae-hee is dead, and when she mentions that he could have been mistaken because it’s been years now, he retorts, “Could you mistake someone you love for somebody else?”
She agrees to help him and leads him away… which is something douchey Sang-jin sees.
Soo-hyun and Hoon sneak into the security room later that night, and um, is anyone else concerned that no one’s on the night shift? Anyhow, they review the tapes but the image is too blurry to confirm her identity.
The lights suddenly turn on and they find themselves caught by Sang-jin and the police. Sang-jin is practically giddy at the thought his sister and the recently fired doc will take a trip downtown. He makes sure to rub her slip-up into her face like the jackass he is.
Soo-hyun and Hoon are locked up in adjacent cells. She apologizes and asks if the woman captured on camera was the Jae-hee he’s looking for. Hoon says he isn’t sure.
Hoon does his best to bottle his tears, the conflicting reports on Jae-hee’s status flashing in his head. When asked if Jae-hee was a doctor, he replies that they went to medical school together.
Soo-hyun asks what kind of person Jae-hee was. A tear streams down his cheek as Hoon answers, “She laughed a lot… laughed a lot… a lot.”
The memories prove to be too much and Hoon breaks down sobbing then and there. Seeing Hoon cry like that breaks my heart every time.
And who should we see back at the hospital but Seung-hee, who takes a call from Agent Cha. She rolls her eyes since she already knows Hoon was dismissed, but they’ve apparently got bigger things to worry about because a defector told him that Jae-hee was dead. Word really gets ’round, doesn’t it?
At this rate, their secret mission is sure to fail, and Agent Cha says that they already did —they’re returning to the North. He hangs up before Seung-hee can get a word in.
Back in jail, Soo-hyun suggests the doppelganger theory, and perhaps Hoon is too exhausted now to argue, wondering if he really was mistaken. “Could it really have been someone else?”
Soo-hyun is bailed out by her father, but she refuses to leave alone. Once they’re outside the police station, Chairman Oh gives his inept son an earful, then tells Hoon that he never wants to see him again. It sure is gratifying to see Sang-jin thwarted, and Soo-hyun is honored to be considered a thorn in her half-brother’s side.
He pettily asks if she snuck in to see if he was the one who brought her mother into the hospital. Ah, so that means the day Hoon first saw Seung-hee is also when Soo-hyun’s mother arrived at the hospital. Putting the pieces together, Soo-hyun remembers Seung-hee.
Speaking of, we see Seung-hee drive up to Hoon’s tiny clinic. Huh, how did you know about this place? Was it a part of your research to look into all things Hoon?
She explores the place and notices Jae-hee’s ragged image on Hoon’s laptop. She plays the video, perplexed at how the woman calls out Hoon’s name repeatedly. She finds herself echoing his name and raises her hand towards the screen…
A noise alerts her of someone approaching right then, and we see Hoon and Soo-hyun enter the clinic. Soo-hyun had asked to see Jae-hee’s picture and is alarmed to see the resemblence with her own eyes. Hoon asks if she’s seen her, and Soo-hyun nods.
Seung-hee is long gone because she’s been dragged away by an angry Agent Cha, who slaps her for looking for hoon. Showing Hoon that Jae-hee is alive is key to get him working at the hospital again, she bites back.
Arguing that Hoon should have seen Jae-hee’s face (meaning, hers) first, she asks if Agent Cha has lost sight of their mission because of his own revenge. He retorts that it’s no use because Chairman Oh isn’t one to be trifled with, and blames Hoon for creating this mess. Sure, blame the guy you may or may not be out to kill.
Taking out his gun, Agent Cha says all isn’t lost—he can still exact his revenge. To that, Seung-hee points the gun at her forehead, her eyes daring him to shoot. Damn, Seung-hee’s a badass.
She tells him to go ahead and kill her, since a failed mission means death anyway. She isn’t the least bit afraid of laying down her life for her country, but Agent Cha spits back that he fears failing a mission. She closes her eyes as he slowly presses on the trigger…
Soo-hyun and Hoon race to the hospital to find Seung-hee, only they’re told that she’s been unreachable for hours. They try calling anyway, and then decide to head to her mother’s house next. But then someone calls out to them.
It’s Seung-hee, who approaches with a smile. Stunned, Hoon walks towards her and utters Jae-hee’s name.
COMMENTS
Now that Maybe Jae-hee/Seung-hee is back in the picture for good (at least, I hope. Why else would Agent Cha let her go?) we can take a closer look at the doppelganger/new identity element and its execution. Granted this show isn’t without its plot holes, so we’ll try to make do with what we have, shall we? We know that Seung-hee is in leagues with Agent Cha, whose motivation to keep tabs on Hoon (and Soo-hyun and Chairman Oh, for that matter) is still unclear. To that extent, I wish we knew a few more details about this Ultimate Mission of theirs instead of dancing around it because right now I can’t figure out who or what they want, yunno, besides Hoon’s employment status, which makes the task seemingly arbitrary. And is it just me or has Agent Cha seen better days?
As for Seung-hee herself, there are clues that point to the idea that she is the Jae-hee we’re looking for. If we follow that theory, then sure I don’t know how Jae-hee might have been transported from Budapest back to the DPRK, still injured and then left to die. Again. Neither do I know what the North might gain from reviving Jae-hee and then employing her as a spy with a whole new identity, but Seung-hee’s confusion at seeing her own face on Hoon’s laptop screen suggests that she doesn’t know either. Or remember. It’s never too early to rule out amnesia in dramaland.
My mind is juggling all kinds of possibilities right now, but in the event that Seung-hee =/= Jae-hee, I’m at least hoping for the farfetched explanation that involves some kind of extensive plastic surgery and political conspiracy that for some reason has personal beef against Hoon. Does that sound crazy? Sure, but this show has also pulled the wool over our eyes on even crazier things.
Don’t get me wrong because for an even stranger reason despite the crazy, I still find this show both compelling and intriguing. I love that Soo-hyun got her emotional closure with her mother, who thought that she’d be giving her daughter a brighter future. Her character’s emotional arc is such an enjoyable watch, especially as she makes an unlikely friend in Hoon, sharing in the mutual loss of a loved one. I thought it was a great beat to see Soo-hyun team up with him to find Jae-hee, and then offer the painful rational explanation that he could have been mistaken. Hoon keeps challenging her perspective on what it means to love someone and what that desperate determination looks like, something I wonder Soo-hyun ever thought to question in her own relationship.
Now that we’ve brought it up, I do enjoy watching the show continuously peel back character layers to show Jae-joon’s malicious underbelly. It’s apparent that he wants a castle, I mean hospital for himself, and it makes me sad that he’s using Soo-hyun to do it. We saw that it disturbed him to see Soo-hyun so disappointed in him, and then further troubled that he might actually have real feelings for her. I almost felt bad for him when he came to see Soo-hyun in tears since he strikes me as someone who almost never talks about his feelings—and in tears, no less. That ambitious glint in his eye suggests otherwise, but I can hope his plans of conquest doesn’t include coming after Hoon because there’s plenty of people running around worrying themselves about that as it is.

If they find out about Park Hoon's whereabouts when he was in North Korea I bet they won't question his medical abilities.
I like this episode because Jae Hee is already here. Well for me she is not a doppelganger she is merely Jae Hee trying her own way to escape North Korea.
I believe that Jae Hee loves Park Hoon as much as Park Hoon's love Jae Hee... We just need time to establish Jae Hee's aka Seung Hee's character. This is getting more and more exciting...
Hoon's and So Hyun's acting is daebak
Jae Joon's character is so full of mystery and he is having a substance now, and we now know that he is capable to fall in love.
And also for Chang Yi she is starting to show her selfish side see the fist over there, I bet its not because her mother told her that Jae Hee is dead, but because she like Hoon a lot and wont lose him merely because of Jae Hee...
Episode 6 is full of fun can wait...
Sorry for my bad english..

Totally agree with your comment. I also think that Seung Hee and Jae Hee are the same person but it looks like SH herself doesn't know that, there is a high possibility that shewas brainwashed and turned into a spy, i also think that once SH starts meeting Hoon more and more she would be able to gain her memories little by little, it looked like she felt something when she was watching that video of JH in the prison camp calling out Hoon's name, maybe she found something familiar with that scene?
The ajusshi playing Nightshade was recently in 'Shark', he was Kim Nam Gil's character's father in that drama, come to think of it his character was similar to this in 'Shark, as in he was some kind of a government agent/spy. Anyway, he's a veteran actor who has acted in many movies and dramas alike so you might have seen him somewhere else if you haven't watched 'Shark'.

Just watching this drama makes me think of North Korea as a really scary country to live in and it's kinda creepy to think that there might be NK spies living in South Korea.

This episode by far exceeded my expectations. I was kinda upset about the cliffhanger at the end and the ep 6 preview was a little misleading to me. (Aren't all previews misleading. ..) Anyhow, the scene where PH and Doctor Oh locked inside the jail was one of my favorites because we, the viewers, can actually feel how much PH loves JH and the bottled feelings he had ever since her fall from the bridge in Budafest. He stills clings to hope but when his determination of saving her from NK and hus beliefs of her being alive is put to the test, you can actually see his inner conflict. Bravo to LJS for his incredible acting in this scene.
As for JH/SH, she really did notice that PH was chasing her that day which led me to conclude that she was brainwashed into believing that she doesn't have any more feelings toward him. I truly believe that SH is indeed JH. Hopefully tomorrow's episode will shed more light to JSY's character. :)

That was so exciting to know that she was aware of Hoon following her and was in fact, baiting him too.
I find it so interesting how in this drama, Jae Hee and Hoon are characters with gender reversals. Usually, it's the guy who ends up amnesiac and leads an exciting life of thrills while facing a journey of returning to his past while the girl is the one pining after her lost lover (Save the Last Dance For Me comes to mind). Here, we have Hoon as the pining lover (a fantastic one at that) and Jae Hee leading the exciting turbulent life of amnesia. I like it. It makes each character in their respective roles that much more interesting. And personally, it makes the Jae Hee character ten times more interesting than if she was the pining lover.

Waaaah! I really don't want Jae Joon to be alone since he has mixed feelings towards Doctor Oh/Soo Hyun and I really want him to choose her over the hospital/his ambition. I think with JJ's character development from a very calculating, ambitious man who will use just about anyone as a stepping stone to power to a somewhat humble and kind man who realized his growing feelings towards SooHyun will have a greater impact on the storyline.
I really don't see PH falling in love with a other girl other than JH/SH because he truly believes that she's the only one in his life and the great extent of what he's capable of doing just to be reunited with his lost fiancee. For him to be falling out of love that deep and into the arms of other girl seems like all he did in the past of saving JH was for nothing. And something that pure of love to be tainted... I can't bear that thought. I just want him to be happy in the end with his lost love...

I've been thinking the same as you, in terms of storyline i think it will not look believable if Hoon starts falling in love with anyone else other than Jae Hee, his longing for her was so painful to watch in the previous episodes (credit LJS for his awesome acting) that you want him to be reunited with her just for his sake, i love, love and love Soo Hyun's character and hope that Jae Joon realise that she is more precious to him than the hospital, anyway i'm happy to hear that the dramas ratings are increasing every episode, it started from 9.4% and now it has reached 14.2% within the first 5 episodes, i hope it keeps rising as i really love this drama.

@ Androssi and megumi:
You guys.....so well said!! Seriously can't see it working out between Hoon and Soo-hyun either mostly because Hoon is way deep in love with Jae Hee and so attached to her. He has so much anguish when it comes to her disappearing from him.
I think the writers set up some Soo-hyun/Hoon scenes as a way to show Soo-hyun falling in love and understanding the meaning of it. Hoon will touch her guarded heart but unfortunately for her, it will be unrequited. Hopefully, it can guide her in the future to truly falling in love with someone, maybe even Jae-joon.

I originally thought NK would have spun Jae Hee's father's death so that she would become a spy just for revenge, but this ep makes it sound like Jae Hee(?) is all business, and Nine Fingers is the one after revenge. So now I don't think it's Jae Hee at all, but I have no idea why NK would go through this extravagant plan with spies and dopplegangers just to screw over Hoon. If they needed him dead they could snipe him, or kidnap him back to NK. IM SO CONFUSED.

There is just so much of this drama that makes no sense at all, anyone would get confused.
I see no reason at all for all these elaborate plots - most of them full of holes. I gave up trying to make sense of it and just watch it to see what WTF thing happens next.

I think the big mission from NK is to use Hoon's love for Jae Hee as a tool to manipulate him once he becomes the chosen surgeon to perform the prime minister's heart surgery. They want to kill the prime minister, making it seem like a mistake in surgery, having Hoon take the fall. Don't know how they'll get there but I see this as the big story arc.
Not sure if Seung Hee is a brainwashed Jae Hee who doesn't know she's Jae Hee or truly a Jae Hee doppelgänger who is a spy and happened to be a doctor too. I tend to think she is a look-alike and was given the red bracelet and ordered to put it onto Patient Kim's wrist as a clue to convince Hoon that Jae Hee is alive and that she is the real Jae Hee.

This show has not let up its magnificent pacing and it continues to cruise with a much refined and definite tone. I’ve said this before, and today’s show just reaffirms it, political-spy-thriller is when it shines best. Although it’s not to say that its medical aspect is any less axial (to the plot) nor compelling, but this episode more than confirms that its medical facade is perfunctory, and if I go on a step further—it merely serves as a medium to channel Hoon’s hero characteristics.
For that matter, Hoon could have easily been a straight up secret agent, and the show’s premise would have still stood up, that is to say, being a doctor is just yet another profession to show how ‘awesome’ or ‘genius-y’ the hero is. That doesn’t make Hoon any less enjoyable as a doctor though, because no matter how indifferent I am to the medical genre, there is definitely merits to him taking a doctor role. At the forefront, it makes him grounded and that much easily relatable as compared to a spy kicking major villain’s butt for one. And honestly, being a genius young doctor is still a more believable role for LJS (and we’re already stretching believable really thin) rather than a sleek young action star, nor am I any more interested in watching him becoming one.
If last week’s episode could be summarized in a few words, I would have called it the Soo Hyun showtime, but today’s episode made me even more excited, as not only did the show shifted back to its main plot point, but at the same time we finally get the chance to know more about Jae Hee/Seung Hee. Much more information is revealed to us yet more questions are being raised. As I could have almost been certain that Jae Hee is Seung Hee from the last couple of episodes, but Seung Hee’s cipher continues to intrigue me.
Although it’s pretty much given that the story revolves around Hoon as he is the main protagonist, it’s more accurate to state however that Jae Hee/Seung Hee is the glue that bonds the plot together. Contrivances aside, almost every plot point somehow ends up being interconnected to Jae Hee/Seung Hee, as we also find Soo Hyun getting entangled to her and Hoon’s affair, with the only missing piece being Jae Joon. Arguably, the reason why she remains axial though is still attributable to Hoon’s devotion in finding her. It’s a right balance of mystery and romance, and I’m finding myself getting more hooked in with their OTP that I could just easily accept now Jae Hee being dead and Hoon and Seung Hee falling in love a new as total strangers, as much as Jae Hee moonlighting as an undercover brainwashed spy and falling in love with Hoon all over, or Jae Hee being a loyal spy ever since whose sole mission has always been to make Hoon fall in love, or her being a double agent for both Koreas, and further into the conspiracy spectrum as needed be—I’m invested. So surprise me show!

A biiiiig YES to all that except maybe the parts that include Seung-hee being not Jae Hee 'cause, well, that is not acceptable for me, heh. I like the idea of Seung-hee = Jae-hee as not only does that make the most sense out of all doppleganger theories (I have deep-seated allergy to plastic surgery storyline since childhood--darn those dumb dramas I used to watch) but it's just the most romantic notion too. And so far, this show is like you said doing a great job of putting romance and mystery together. I'd like for that to continue.

I like the show and am entertained but there are definitely huge plot holes so far. How the heck did they pull out a bleeding jae hee who fell into the river and transport her back to NK? And how did the NKs who got shot get away from the Budapest police and get back to NK? How do you steal someone who just had surgery without anyone knowing and what did they do to the guy?

There are still 15 episodes left so I think it will be explained somehow, they will have to if Seung Hee is indeed Jae Hee, the writers are deliberately not explaining at this point to add the suspense aspect and i think it's working, it leaves viewers with a lot of questions and curiosity to know why and how and that's what the show wants, even though some of the things in this show are unrealistic it's still an intriguing and interesting show, all the actors and actress especially LJS have done a great job in making this show interesting so i give them massive props for that, i believe the show will answer the questions little by little and whether the answers are unrealistic or realistic i don't think i will mind because at the end of the day it's just a drama anyway.

Omg!!! Episode 5 is so riveting! Jae Hee is definitely a mysterious figure. I watched this only 2 hours after the Korean airing so not sure if the subtitles are accurate at the point but, Seung-hee mentions about needing to see Jae Hee? If subs is correct at the point, does it mean she is the twin? Will watch another source after this to confirm.
And Lee Jong Suk’s acting in this episode is even better than the earlier episodes! He made my heart weep when he sobbed in jail thinking about her. And also when at the very last scene when JH/Seung-hee walked up to him. Just hearing him looking at her and calling her ‘Jae Hee ah’ is enough to break my hear. Oh yes, it makes me want to be her!
Episode 5 is wonderful but that two scenes of Jong Suk really was the best to me. It almost freezes the fantastic pacing up till now and gives us another glimpse of Park Hoon's inner world. That two scenes of LJS are so short but so good. That few seconds made me forget his more spirited character aka delivery man and Doctor Park but brought me back to the vulnerable boy who is not concerned with anything in the world except for his missing girlfriend.
And ep 6′s trailer is showing that the drama is bent on us wondering if he will be with which girl. Boy bumped into girl wrapped in towel alert.

I am just happy to see the recap the same day :-) Thank you.
I am addicted to this drama and am feeling passionate about everything.
Being a fan of something is so much fun!! You can really rant about stuff that really adds nothing to your life but allows you to distract yourself for those moments. Else life could get so boring.
I have been disappointed by the lead actress's acting skills. If it is how she is supposed to act, then it is not good enough. If directors & writers are compromising, then it is not good enough. But character is interesting even if the actress playing is not as interesting. So, I will let my own imagination fly on that.
But did you see LJS reminiscing and crying. Isn't he awesome? I have seen many Kdramas now and I don't cry as much I used to cry earlier. He still made me feel teary eyed. That boy is awesome.
Kang Sora is so good as well.
I am stilll not sure if second male lead is doing his best but I liked him enough in another star. So, I am patient.
Lead actress though.... There is something lacking.

I agree with you, she really needs to do something about her acting. Usually I can ship anyone with LJS, and I really mean anyone, including boys. But in this case, even though it is apparent that JongSeokkie is putting in 200% and I can even see him hypnotizing himself to believe he is in love with Jaehee, the chemistry just isn't there.
I know Jaehee's character is supposed to be super mysterious, but there are a million ways to convey enmity. Instead, she's been wearing the same two expressions throughout these 5 episodes, i.e. smiling face and blank face. This is really frustrating me, there's nothing more upsetting than having a leading pair without chemistry when all the ingredients for a great romance are in place.
At this rate, I'm totally onboard the Hoon and SooHyun ship. Jaehee has got to up her game!

The leading actress ( who till now doesn't lead anything) should do a serious work on her acting and hopefully before the drama ends,
she is like a non existing individual in that drama, she is adding nothing to the show at the contrary, the few scenes she is in make you feel nothing, blank.
In the other hand Kang Sora is kilin it, she is steeling the show from her.

She's supposed to be this mysterious figure and if the PDs immediately reveals the audience about JH, then she won't be mysterious anymore. I think by slowly revealing JH/SH, it would pique the viewers' attention more than just laying all the cards in one go.

May 20, 2014 at 4:53 AM
honestly though, does she /feel/ mysterious to you?
other than the fact that we don't know anything about her except that she is a spy, how is she mysterious? they could have just put a random person there and said that person is a spy - it'd have been the same. the only mysterious about her is stemming from the writing, not the acting, which makes it very hard for me to care enough.
let's take a look at hanjaejoon. we don't know much about him as well - other than the fact that he wants the hospital - but i feel more depth from his character than JH/SH, which shouldn't be the case because honestly, JH/SH should be hiding so much more.
I want to like the spy element more than the melo/politics, but it is really hard to, when the 'spy' doesn't even make me feel like she's someone i should bother about.

Well this is a matter of opinions since you obviously feel detached from JSY's character(s). In my perspective, I actually think that she improved alot in terms of her acting from Bridal Mask to this drama. She's still young compared to her co-stars so there's room for development. And since ep 5 is the only beginning of our view on JH/SH.

May 21, 2014 at 12:06 AM
Agree. She doesn't feel mysterious, and I get annoyed everytime she appears on screen. She is just not selling the role well, and it spoils the pacing of the drama for me. Age should not be an excuse for poor acting, if she is even acting at all. There is just something.... missing from her. It makes me feel like the writer is doing a bad job writing the character, which shouldn't be, because the rest of the characters are either fun or interesting. Jae Hee or whatever her current name is, is not.

Starting to have another theory behind Seung Hee/Jae Hee, but dunno if the series are that "smart" about it:
She have been a spy since her father's capture, meaning what happen in Hungary was a ploy that became a failure.
But then again, we will see if that is the case or not haha. Either way the episode 5 was brilliant in many ways. :)

This! This is probably the best theory yet!I mean in ep 5, she even said that she would even willing to die for the sake of the country, meaning from the time of the kidney surgery transfer to the Hungarian's death events is all acts of ploy! The spy thing would make the character seem fit and thus explain why she doesn't care or giving the sh-t about the risk of being momentarily heart stop by Park Hoon! Nice!

It's one thing to be mysterious, but being mysterious doesn't mean you only have one expression plastered to your face the entire time. I'm not a hater - I haven't watched any of her previous works before, but I wished they had a better actress for SH/JH. I love the mysterious surrounding SH/JH's character. There's a lot of potential as to how it can turn out, but JSY's acting is so flat it doesn't do the character justice. Up to this point, JSY just makes me feel as though JH/SH is just a device for all the other characters to grow, it could have just been anyone else. Urgh.
This is probably an unpopular opinion but I would like more of PH/JJ scenes. I like watching how those two are working for different purposes and there is so much room for conflict between the two. It brings out how PH "should never forget he is a doctor". I want more of this. But nah, we probably won't. The show is more fixated on the spy element and how much PH wants to find JH.
I loved the scenes between Hoon and Soohyun, how Soohyun is beginning to treat Hoon as a friend. And how she's actually really trying to help him. And how Hoon actually kind of opened up to her about Jaehee when they were detained.

crying because Lee Jong Suk is a madly in love puppy but Jin Se Yeon is stiff awkward tree. It's like watching a puppy watching a tree with lovestruck eyes and wailing words of love for it only to end up as a one way emotion. Which in this case, is almost ridiculous if it's not hilarious
Then, Kang Sora is the five years old girl who loves the puppy after drifting from the thought that such being is dirty for a girl like him, but can't fully love the puppy because there's a boy next door who is really cute, who is Park Hye Jin, and it's more proper to love him then to devote herself to the puppy.
Don't tell me this drama grows up from this scenario cause that's really it.
My final verdict is Lee Jong Suk acts his character awesomely. I like his detailed expression, his goofy side, and when he is angry or sad, everything is done well.
Then, I don't know what anyone else say, but KANG SORA IS DROP GORGEOUS DID YOU SEE IT WHEN SHE WAS IN SCENE WITH JIN SE YEON AND HOW IT EVEN MAKE HER MORE GORGEOUS? I don't even get to like her when she was in Dream High 2, it's not like I don't like her too, but she grabs my heart. And that's what Jin Se Yeon failed to do.
Don't tell me because Jin Se Yeon hadn't given a time to prove herself yet. She has. Starting from the episode 1 she already played many kind of emotion. She is bubbly, then she is sick, then she is sad, then she is evil. Kang Sora did much the same, even lesser. But she is the one who grabs heart.
Like come on, see the scene where Kang Sora stood on the stair and LJS approached her.

THIS. this was basically what i've been feeling since the first episode, and it is sad that I'm feeling this way because that's not how it should be like.
Yeah, sure, JH took the bullet for PH. This probably shows her love for PH but I don't feel it. I had to constantly remind myself that she took the bullet from him to convince myself that she loves him because that's the way it should be. And even then, if I'm convinced that she loves him, i'll credit it to the writers for making her take the bullet. The PH/JH scenes, yeah they're cute and you see LJS being so in love, but honestly, i don't feel the same from JSY?

I really want to know what their mission is...I feel like everything is connected but with the puzzle all scattered. If Han Seung Hee is a different person to Song Jae Hee how does she know so much about Park Hoon and why does she want him to be a doctor at Dongwoo University Hospital? WHAT IS THE MISSION??!!
The only thing I understand is that the doctors are training/competing to be part of the operation on the Primer which I believe is connected to the operation in the first episode.
Also, it may seem like the North Koreans are 'bad guys' but are they??

i think JSY and KSR both share the lead actress role, if JSY indeed is the lead then i believe from next episode onwards we will be seeing her more, up until this point the show has been mostly hiding her from Hoon and almost all the people, she's only seen interacting with the NK Spy but now that she has come out and shown herself to Hoon i think the show will involve her more from now on, if the show keep making JSY character avoid other people esp the main characters then nobody will be able to dispute that KSR is the main actress in this show.

my logical brain tells me that Jae Hee must be dead by now( after falling from a tall bridge in Budapest) thus Seung Hee is someone else who imitates her thanks for PS surgeons who were kidnapped from SK. Yet KDrama infused brain of mine tells me that Jae Hee somehow magically survived from the bridge fall and transported to NK and Seung Hee is indeed Jae Hee. She seems to be brainwashed or blackmailed by the NK spy thus she behaves like a mannequin?? Any first loves in KDrama go further as if the first love is the only and the last love.If that were the case, SH would be more likely to die to save Hoon?( maybe the actress' contract contains how many times she needs to die in dramas in one year!?) If that were the case, it would be too heartbreaking for Hoon. To lessen his pain, I would like to see SJ being a fake JH instead of the real JH, his first love.
As many point out, despite of big plot holes, the drama is fun to watch.

Once again, I still feel like there is too much hate on JSY. IMO, being expressionless as SH is quite fine to me, because she's supposed to be show no feeling towards anything. I'm quite sure either she's supposed to be a cold person here (whether brainwashed or not), and definitely won't be showing any emotion in front of PH. She barely has anyone to interact with except some crazy North Korean spy or whoever. You're not going to see her have much reaction or emotion to anything. Can you really imagine SH looking caring, sad or happy when she's talking to Soo Hyun or other hospital workers? Maybe her character is just supposed to be like that? There is no depth to her character because it isn't developed ... What kind of depth do you expect from a character we know no background to?
IDK how to explain myself, but I just feel like people use the SAME criticism over and over again, but I don't think that's really the case here.
Once again, it is intended that we know nothing about Seung Hee, so she won't have much screentime until they want to develop the story further. It's only been 5 episodes...
IMO I think it's currently equally as possible for Seung Hee and Jae Hee to be different people or the same people. Just depends how they want to do it.... but I certainly hope SH is JH; otherwise I feel like this show is just too cruel -___- I'm tired of being unsatisfied with these recent kdrama endings !!

Yeah, that was my feelings as well, that she was just practicing so that she could imitate calling Hoon's name whenever the need arose.
I don't get the sense that JH is SH. They seem to be two entirely different people. I suspect major plastic surgery, rather than amnesia, but the next episode will confirm it.
I used to be a JH/SH fan, but this episode Jin Se Yeon's acting left me cold. There really should be a other expressions on her face except that cold look she constantly wears, and like many others, her acting in this episodes leaves me feeling flat out dissatisfied. I'm beginning to ship Hoon with Soo-Hyun when I was adamantly against that coupling in the beginning.
Well if JH ends up being truly dead, then I really wouldn't want Hoon to end up with a North Korean defector who is up to no good. But I'm waiting to see how the show steps up its game, I expect that there'll be surprises in store.

Au contraire to what many others have said, I don't find JSY's performance to be expressionless at all.
Take the hospital evasion scene for example. Sometimes, there seemed to be undercurrent of longing and sadness in her eyes - especially with the sideways glance she gave Park Hoon (especially the slow motion bit). But at other times, she would have a self satisfied smirk, like it was mission accomplished (especially when she was on the ambulance).
Then in the laptop scene, her first call of "hoon-ah" sounded perplexed, with narrowing of her eyes, like she was testing out a new word... but then her 3rd hoon changes into one that sounds of longing, followed by a look of sadness as she stretches out her hand.
And in the final scene, the look she gives Park Hoon comes across as a troubled yearning.
One minute, the show has me thinking that SH =JH, replete with her memories, doing this to protect Park Hoon; then in another, it feels as though SH is a JH imposter or amnestic JH, with nefarious intentions.
I think it is a testament to her acting ability (and the directing) that she is successful at keeping us confused about SH's underlying motivations and identity.

@pg You must be new to drama obsession. There are only two sites that do their own subbing - Viki (the fastest, but doesn't carry all the shows) and Dramafever (they fancy themselves more proffesional, means not as fast) Evrone else downloads (rips) subs after them. Subbers on Viki are mostly volunteers, means they have other jobs and a life.

thank you for replying thats really nice of you......... i am not that new but this level of obsession on a running drama happens once in a while my last obsession was i hear your voice ........... i had never even thought that the next one would be of lee jong suk as well.......... anywez usually whenever an episode finished airing we could find updates about the drama on that very day but today even after hours after it finished i couldn't find any......... i was starting to think the drama might have gone downhill in episode 6 but it is so nice and sweet i wish we could get the subbed version sooner.....usually if all else failed one person travelling tumblr( hey hitori aka one person travelling and i am sorry about mentioning you without your consent.. your doing an amazing job posting update about DS on your tumblr and i say this cause i am pretty sure you are in this crowd cause i saw you mention dramabeans once in your tumblr) would always update about the episode but this time around even she didn't have much to say since wasn't digging into this particular episode.......... unlike her though i loved it and have already watched the episode numerous times with the little sub they have been able to put out in viki...

If it's English text update you are talking about, a page in Facebk is did just that last night. Go search for 'Doctor Stranger' (the page with 80,000+ likes reflected under search but shows 90,000+ when you go into the page itself, figures at current moment). Also there's several pages and groups of Lee Jong Suk who is sharing non-stop on the show.

am i supposed to root for our Hoon with Jae Hee/Seung Hee? Or is it too early in the game... i just don't feel anything positive (so far) for the other half of our main otp. more so if she's really just some random girl (who got plastic surgery) carrying out her spy mission for NK.
this drama really... *sigh*
i hope them writers make her character more complex. that if they set her out as really just a non-Jaehee spy, they'd make an great backstory that could explain her motives (something more than love for country and that stuff). then make her fall in love with our hero in the process and be conflicted in her mission.. maybe that'll make me root for her somehow. but what is THE MISSION in the first place? why must it be hoon of all people? okay, because he's the hero. lol

There certainly is a lot of unfair criticisms of Jin Se Yeong here. Right from the start, when it was announced that she will be in this show, the criticisms have never stopped. Curiously, Kang Sora's support is tremendous with many hailing her acting. I have not watched Kang Sora before so have no comments. But it seems like she has not that many projects in the first place. I've only seen Jin Se Yeong briefly in Bridal Mask as I was not able to follow the drama too closely at that time but didn't think she was that terrible. So anyway, the pattern here is, lots of criticisms on JSY and whenever there's any mention of Kang Sora (all praises), you'll see plenty, sometimes hundreds of likes for that post. And I realise the power of Kang Sora's fans when I make a check on Youtube. Just search Doctor Stranger and Kang Sora and you'll know what I mean. Oh, the comments there too.
Curious, really curious.
Btw other websites that I visited did not seem to have this overwhelming trend against JSY. Non-English ones are even more silent about her alleged inability to act.
C'mon, it is easy to act with lots of emotional upheaval. When your role do not call for that, how can one label the acting as flat? I thought she delivered what was necessary and is doing a fine job.
I'm not a fan of both actresses, so just saying out my observations.

I came into this drama without having watched any of KSR/JSY's works before so I pretty much didn't have any expectations or biases against either of them.
i won't say kangsora is amazing but she's good enough.
i realized the most common defense for JSY is that her role does not call for much emotions. seunghee probably doesn't, but jaehee does. and i don't really know but i don't think not showing a lot of emotions is the same as flat. nightshades is pretty much an emotionless character also but his acting doesn't come out as being flat.
i'm not sure which websites you visited, but the chinese and korean websites i've visited, apparently netizens were quite dissatisfied with her acting as well. (but then again, i read those websites with the help of google translate and my very limited ability to understand the language so i might be wrong)

Maybe because JSY has been in a lot of projects nonstop and always potray her characters the same way. Making us remember her past work and not focus on her character in Doctor strange.
JSY was good as badass in Bridal mask, but after some episodes her character was flat, and JSY was also flat, always with the same expression - she was bad there... and the only weak link there.
In other projects her characters are all the same too... so maybe that is why has so much criticisms over JSY character and acting - it seems she never gives her all - doesn't help she accepts other drama works before ending one too...
Kang Sora on the other hand - she doesn't feel the same, and feels more sincere in her works than JSY.
Kang Sora shined in Sunny movie, she played another role in dream high - that sucked but her character was different from Sunny, now she is playing another kind of character and has crazy chemistry with LSJ maybe that is why.

At this point, I really ship Soo Hyun and Hoon. Their chemistry is just so great comparing to Hoon and Jae Hee/Seung Hee. Kang Sora and Lee Jong Suk is doing an awesome job at keeping the audience hooked on their scenes. I can really see why this pair has potential. Meanwhile the character portrayal of Jae Hee/Seung Hee is left to be mysterious, I just hope that there would be more scenes where she can really expresses her feelings for Hoon. Jin Se Yeon's acting is perfectly understandable, and she is as good as Kang Sora. Maybe the director is trying to build Park Hoon's relationships with other characters? Regardless, I'm still rooting for him and Jae Hee/Seung Hee. I just don't know who to ship harder cause Lee Jong Suk looks good with everyone and has incredibly intense chemistry with his on-screen opposites. This leaves me feeling distressed lol.
The plot is getting better and better, I just hope the North Korean guy turns good.

I am convinced Seung-hee is amnesiac Jae Hee. Or I'm praying fervently that she is because I can't bear seeing Hoon so devastated at his potential loss. My heart just clenches when his hopes are squashed everytime. Please, dramagods, let Hoon have his beautiful reunion with Jae Hee and finally lead a blissful life with her. My sappy romantic heart can't take this separation angst. *weeps*
Gummimochi, I'm with you on wishing for more details about the Ultimate Mission. I suspect it has to do with trying to kill off the President (he's the one with the heart condition, right?) but how does Hoon play into their conspiracy? Anyways, I can be patient with the drama on that front. As long as it isn't completely stupid, as in there are much easier methods of doing the Ultimate Mission but the show decides to do complicated spy stuff with doppelganger drama. Then I will be pissed off. I mean, I get this show is riddled with plot holes anyways, but it still has a coherency that I hope remains intact.
As a complete aside, am I the only one who likes Agent Cha's ruffian look? He looks pretty beaten and worn down but still handsome, hahaha.

I'm not always keen on going into exchanging opinions with keyboard warriors nor do I like the feeling of being one myself, but I would like to point out things just to even out the perspective (or as it appears to be, upvotes in Dramabeans after all is suspect once it breaks the 80+ mark given the amount of traffic DB receives and the ability to upvote multilple times) about JSY seemingly having a solitary expression.
First and foremost, I would acknowledge that Seung Hee definitely does have a predominantly cold expression for most of the time, whether that is just accidental to JSY's apparent lack of emoting capability is a story of speculation, on the other hand, it does however fits SH’s characteristic perfectly for me. Yes, it's been said numerous times, she is meant to be mysterious, however I do agree that being mysterious doesn't necessitate being a blank canvass. In fact, one can be just as enigmatic and still have a dynamic display of diverse facial expressions. From menacing, calculating, longing, agonized, or innocence, all of it can be channeled properly and the end result is still the same mysterious persona. But, that ability to shift emotions but still end up with the same tone and characteristic is usually reserved to the top tier of actors and it is not any more common in movie land as it is but a rare treat in tv series. I definitely wouldn't consider JSY to be that kind of actor of caliber.
But, given the rarity of such ability (as evidenced by me going blank of trying to come up with any merit-able benchmark to kdrama acting that can exemplify as much nuance that is demanded for such expectation) and given of how much talent that the producers have in their hands, becoming one-note is therefore inevitable for Seung Hee. Yes, one can still argue, she can do better, but anybody else would have wished the same too, and to be honest none of her current co-stars could have nailed it any better either. Seung Hee is a cold mysterious persona and JSY plays that part at least, and with all 2 minutes worth of her going around to fool Park Hoon (the hospital chase scene), I definitely saw a glimpse of cunning and unpierceable focus to her mission. Woody? Perhaps, but not devoid of emotion. Not that there is much emotion to display in that scene to begin with, was she supposed to be angry, happy, sad, or worried? You tell me.

Vague is the best word to describe SH and JSY's portrayal of her. This is best exemplified by her mimic scene during the laptop scene: the first call of 'Hoon-ah' sounded very testy, as if she's uttering the word the very first time, the subsequent instances and we see her slowly matching Jae Hee's intonation, and all along wearing an indescribable face of either longing or just plain indifference with a slight tinge of apprehension. Nothing masterful, but it gets the job done. And being Seung Hee is no easy job, for any actor.
Why people continue to pit her against KSR though, is an entirely baffling notion to me. They play completely different characters and their interaction with Park Hoon is vastly different too. KSR has much freedom with hers because she can be either annoying, happy, sad, or angry with PH; SH doesn't have that luxury, as her interactions are limited to herself or Comrade little finger. She is for the most part a one-dimensional character. It takes special talent to elevate such role to a certain degree of viewer association that allows us to symphatize with her. Simply put, there is nothing to sympathize with her, yet.
Will JSY be able to surprise us with an elevated performance? I honestly don't know, nor am I putting my expectations high. But I just want people to be made aware that she's got a lot in her plate taking this role. You could criticize her, but I have nothing but respect to anyone willing to test themselves with such tough role. And unlike other people, I don't think it's a matter of her 'not trying to improve' her craft by taking this role rather than being 'professional' instead but jobless nonetheless, somewhere else in front of a mirror trying to emote. How can I hate someone who is only trying to entertain me?

Scientia, you write beautifully. I like your calm, rational, focused way of discussing, especially when arguing against popular opinion.
I remember the first time I saw Jin Se-yeon was in Gaksital as Mok Dan. My feelings about her acting skills was that she was serviceable. She got the job done as I could believe in her character. Where she falters is in not giving her characters the extra oomph they deserve. Mok Dan, when the writing made her interesting, could have been more interesting if Se-yeon had more nuance in her acting. But otherwise, she was okay. Decent at best.
After that I haven't watched any of Se-yeon's other works. This is her second project I am watching. This time, I also tuned into the pre-production commentary. A lot of people had issues with her casting which I felt was unsettling because although not an amazing actress, she didn't completely lack talent either. There was also some hullabaloo about her doing multiple projects at the same time or something like that. Anyways, I bring this up because I feel some people might be projecting their previous biases and not giving her a full chance.
So without prior judgement, I watched this to see if Se-yeon does any better. I'd say she remains serviceable. She doesn't elevate her character but she does enough to keep with the writing. The writing called for reserved, sneaky, fearless, determined Seung-hee and that's exactly what I'm seeing. Besides, what does a spy on a mission need extraneous emotions for? The situation hasn't even called for it yet. When Seung-hee becomes conflicted and question who she is as well as the feelings that I predict will emerge through her interactions with Hoon (after all, he touched Soo-hyun's heart and melted her cold exterior too), that's when I feel it is more apt to discuss Se-yeon's acting capability and where she is failing. For now, she's doing fine.

Very well said. There's a lot of hate towards JSY which I think is unfairly justified such as her 'blank' expression or her inability to 'act.' I've first saw her in BM and her role as Mok Dan was adequate enough that it made me tear up a bit and that's saying a lot because I rarely cry and it was her first lead role in a drama. Needless to say, I'd say JSY improved. Acting doesn't need to be extravagant in order to evoke a response from the audience but the subtle hints of emotions that's being conveyed from a fleeting look to a yearning stare. I'd say JSY played her characters (both JH and Seung Hee). I do agree with you whole heartedly because Seung Hee has limited ways that she can response to PH without raising alarms on Agent Cha compared to So Hyeon. It just irritates me that KSR fans are bashing on JSY only because they're KSR fans.

I really, truly love this show rn and I'm excited about all the genre-blending and intrigue that's going on. And I've loved Jae Hee since episode 1, but it seems like ppl here decided to side against her (and the drama) from the very beginning and it only grew worse with each episode. Everything I love about the show got complained about in the comments and I don't understand why anyone would have stayed this long (5 eps in) just to complain about the show. I'm glad stuff is starting to move on the doppelganger front, and I still think she's brainwashed and amnesiac - without a dead body, no one in dramaland can be actually presumed dead.
I'm surprised at how much fleshing out Soo-hyun has received so far, though - way more screentime than Jae-joon, even, which is rare for a second female lead. She and Hoon work really well as a team, and the chemistry combined with Jae-joon's intent to use her makes me wonder what turn this story is going for.
In a way, I'd say it's more her episode than anyone else's - she gets the most range to show off here, surprisingly more actual screen time than most of the other actors, and the closure of an arc involving her mother. I'm excited to see her character moving forward, no matter what the love line outcome is - the only thing I don't love about Soo-hyun is her tendency to wear heels when she's on duty, it makes no sense for a doctor who's got to be on her feet.
Kang Sora is solid here. She inhabited her role with absolute authority from moment 1 (and that is another thing that makes this character distinctive - we don't really see many young women in kdramas with that air of business about them), no matter how much anyone tries to insist that people who praise her are only saying it because they 'dislike' the other actress, or whatever. (and speaking of her, she's actually somewhat more watchable as cyborg Seung-hee than sweet, pure Jae-hee - less simpering seems to do her good, as long as she doesn't repeat that cringeworthy video. Still really awkward line delivery though. I want to know what the grand mission is, what Agent Cha is really chasing Hoon for, and where this crosses with Evil Prime Minister).

I think that Jahee is dead and Seunghee is not the real JH. This is because nine fingers has said- "I made you, the person you are today." This could mean either plastic surgery which is possible or simply changing her identity, but I'm leaning more on JH being dead. There is also further evidence when JH has a shirtless scene and you do not see a scar where her heart transplant should have left on her chest. Nor do you see a gunshot wound scar on her right or left side (I forget which). Overall, I think she's either dead, or they manipulated her with the knowledge of Park Hoon killing her father, using his heart to save her. But this manipulation wouldn't lead to her losing her memory.. which could be possible from the trauma of her gun shot wound and her falling into the ocean. However, if she was manipulated, where is the scar? This could also be explained however as her being the real JH, nine fingers removed the scar to use her for his mission for revenge or DPRK's mission. To make Hoon think that she ISN'T JH but she really is. But what would be the point? I guess this is something that we will have t find out with some answers.

Really like how the drama is turning out to be such a big mystery.
As of now, the possibility in my mind:
JH somehow has pretended to lose her memory. That agent guy makes her into what she is... a spy, wanting to make use of her to get back at Park Hoon and also for a greater mission, not knowing that she is fully aware of her own identity. She has to pretend that she is not who she is, including in front of Park Hoon. Maybe it's to ensure that she'll be able to get out of the clutches of NK.
She is Jae Hee. 1st and 2nd episodes has laid out some foundations for future happenings. Such as when Park Hoon declares that he will search for her no matter where she is, and that he will recognise her by her heartbeat.

Not sure of anyone said this but IMO there are three possibilities about the character SH
1) Like the author said, if SH =/= there is probably a huge polictical conspiracy involved and plastic surgery. Though this one isn't quite likely because it doesn't really fit in the plot so far
2) SH = JH but her memories were lost DUE TO HER FEVER and maybe the doctor who took a look at her thought this was a chance to convert her to be a NK spy. This idea is quite likely as we see how she stares at the computer screen like so
3) SH = JH with her memories in tact, like someone mentioned before, her own way of escaping. This is likely but I would have thought she would have gotten closer to Hoon earlier on and have him help her
Tl:dr I think SH = JH with her memories lost. If this is so I can see how this will fit into the plot and what future it has. Conflict between working for the government vs this love feeling in her heart that she can't shake away
