TV Chosun’s period drama Into the Fire prepares for (delayed) premiere
by awcoconuts
Choi Su-jong’s new historical drama, Into the Fire (or Into the Flames), was to start this Friday, but the premiere has been pushed back due to coverage of the ferry tragedy and out of respect for the families of the missing. It’s a bit of a wonder that TV Chosun, the cable channel on which Into the Fire will air, was able to land an actor of Choi Su-jong’s caliber for this project, but the star is said to have taken on the drama because of an opportunity to send a message.
The actor said, “After finishing a difficult sageuk, I had such a hard time and I swore I would never do another. However, after reading this screenplay, I thought to myself, it delivers a message to young viewers — I need to take this on.” He went on to say, “I wanted to pass on something to future generations, and to show how a previous generation overcame hardships and maximized opportunities.”
Choi Su-jong plays the lead, a man loosely based on real-life “Carnegie of Korea” Park Tae-joon, the late and legendary former president of POSCO (one of the world’s largest steelmakers). The drama is set in the period shortly after Occupation and the Korean War, and will show Choi Su-jong working tirelessly to build a mill that will produce the steel necessary to modernize Korea.
Into the Fire will tell the story of the people who battled the poverty and despair of the times with a relentless pursuit of economic innovation, and the choices they made in the name of love, loyalty and sacrifice. This being dramaland, it will also throw in a childhood-friend-turned-bitter-enemy storyline for good measure, which will serve to demonstrate the ambitious drive of Choi Su-jong and his rival.
Lee In-hye (Legend of the Patriots — she’ll be reunited with Choi Su-jong, who starred) will play Choi Su-jong’s wife, fluent in English and French and, as the description puts it, “inferior to no man.” Sohn Tae-young (You’re the Best, Lee Soon Shin) plays an “ice princess” character, Kumiko, who is the only daughter in a family that runs a prominent Japanese business conglomerate. She thaws as the drama goes on, particularly after meeting the hero, whose life she saves; she falls in love with him but is also hurt and angered after he leaves. Ryu Jin (Prime Minister and I) plays the man who loves her, despite her lingering feelings for the hero.
The drama will air on Fridays and Saturdays on TV Chosun, but the new release date has not yet been set.

Wow, had no idea of this show's existence, but the trailer, descriptions and setting all look soooo good. If it's subbed, I might just pick it up! Thanks for the heads up, awcoconuts :)
(PS fitting decision to postpone, in light of and out of respect for the recent tragedy)

If they sub it, I will watch. They sold me at female lead inferior to no man. And also I will watch as a thank you note to tv chosun for taken a chance on lee hong ki and yang jin sung in BOTC. I can't send hem flowers so the least I can do is watch something else they are doing.
The actors are professionals and lead guy understand it is about the story first and the rest will follow. I am glad he didn't let tiny cable station that barely anyone watch deter him from taking this role.

I have SO been waiting for this! Happy beyond belief that Choi Su Jong didn't retire for good after all the troubles during "King's Dream." And Dok Go Young Jae -- one of my favorite ajusshis!!! This production has EPIC written all over it -- who cares if it's on cable. If it's a quality show, people will find it and watch no matter what.
Bless them for respecting the recent tragic events as well. #prayforsouthkorea

Choi Su Jong is one of my favorite actors as well. Thank you for bringing this drama to our awareness, awcoconuts (for those of us who didn't know). I also liked Sohn Tae-young in YATBLSS, and I have liked Ryu Jin in the few dramas I have seen him in, so far. Dok Ko Yeong Jae was in 7 LCS and I loved his scenes with JW in that drama, especially the one at the airport.
I echo the other beanies' sentiments about being glad Choi Su Jong decided to do this drama, in spite of it being shown on a cable channel (that not many people watch, based on the comments here). This story needs to be told, and I trust that all the actors, the crew, staff and production teams involved in this project will do it justice. I will keep an eye out for this drama. I really liked Choi Su Jong in The President (the 1st drama I saw him in), and I really loved that drama. It was well done, and the topic was interesting.
I also saw Choi Su Jong on Happy Together around that time (to promote the drama), and he was funny and very good-natured. I enjoyed seeing him and the other actors on that ep. of Happy Together.

Dramawiki has the start date as April 25th as it replaces Bride of the Century... But that could be wrong

The synopsis really reminds me the 2007 Japanese drama "Karei naru Ichizoku" (aka: The Grand Tribe).
That drama got great ratings and many awards.
Anyways... I'm not really interested in this Kdrama. Not my cup of tea.

I have mixed feelings about this. I want to watch it because it sounds really interesting. The problem I have is I don't know if it'll be on Dramafever or Viki, the two sites I go to for drama watching.
Will see what happens, and looking forward to it!

Hello Abbie,
Would you consider watching it on gooddrama.net? They might decide to sub it or add it to their list of dramas. It would be worth checking there. And maybe if you wrote to DF and viki, they could let you know if they intend on subbing it as well. Just a thought.

Gooddrama.net doesn't sub dramas. They basically rip off subs from vikii, dramafever, cruncyroll and darksmurfsub.

darksmurfsub is pretty good about subbing cable dramas. I think they were the only one that subbed "The End of the World" last year.

Thanks for the info. I think I had read something along those lines in the past. I just wanted to let Abbie know that she could also check gooddrama.net, as I have noticed a few times that they had posted an ep. of a drama before DF posted it, and before viki was done with the subbing. As I was reading and watching the episode on their site, I also noticed that the subs were different than the subs posted on viki.
I don't watch dramas on Crunchyroll (I haven't in a long time), and on darksmurfsub, so I didn't think of them.
Abbie, there is also http://dramacrazy.eu/
if you wish to look at another site as well.

TVchosun lastest drama - Bride of the Century with Lee Hongki (Jeremy in You Are Beautiful) did really well. I had no expectations and it ended up being a really cute, addictive-like potato chips drama, that was entertaining.
Hongki and Choi Su Jong are smart. They are choosing good projects without regard to $$ what they could make with a larger media outlets (the big three KBS, SBS, MBC). TVchosun finishes their drama scripts so that the actor can assess whether they want to take time out of their packed schedules to commit to a project. And most likely it will be a project that the artist is fully on-board with since they're sacrificing $$/exposure for a drama on a tiny cable channel.

I have watched the first 4 episodes. It is an excellent drama. (and adult cast is not even yet on). It is such a shame that no one subs it and no one recaps it.
