Song Hye-gyo in talks to headline Happy House

Two famous female Chungmuro power players, Song Hye-gyo (That Winter, The Wind Blows) and director Lee Kyung-mi (Crush and Blush or Miss Carrot) may team up for the upcoming film Happy House (or House Full of Happiness). Happy House marks the return of director Lee Kyung-mi after a six-year hiatus – she carefully selected the movie after much deliberation, and reached out to Song Hye-gyo with the offer of the lead.

Song Hye-gyo hasn’t confirmed her participation, but is considering the role with great interest, especially since director Lee Kyung-mi plans to put her heart and soul into the project. A source said that Song Hye-gyo was impressed by Crush and Blush and the film’s unique and charismatic lead character (Gong Hyo-jin as a quirky teacher), and that she’s interested because it is difficult to find current Chungmuro screenplays carried by women in leading roles.

As usual, not much is known about the plot – even the title hasn’t been confirmed. Happy House seems like a generic placeholder from the little we do know of the story: a man is eager to enter the world of politics, and we’ll learn about his journey/family/support network. Song Hye-gyo would play the anguished wife at his side as election day approaches. Since we know her character is the focus, it’s obvious the production company doesn’t want to reveal too much. Planning is still in the early stages, and no one’s been cast, yet. CJ Entertainment will distribute, and cameras will start rolling in the latter half of this year.

After hearing so much praise for Crush and Blush, I finally watched it recently. I'm a big fan of Gong Hyo-jin and think she's a great actress with a unique realistic style. But in that film, I found her no more charismatic than she has been in other roles, and though it's a departure from her "Gong-bly" image, I don't see how her performance or the film itself warrants all the critical praise it's received.
I guess after six years, we can expect something special from the director. The premise could turn out to be plenty engaging.

Song Hye-gyo, I'm not that familiar with her acting since the only project of hers I've seen is The World They Live In. A drama I really enjoyed, but not because of her haha. She is so pretty though. I could see her in this role, and I'm eager to find out who gets cast as the politician.

Your mention of Gong Hyo Jin reminds me of how baffled I was over her performance (and adulating comments about her in this forum) in Master's Sun (the only thing in which I ever saw her). I will just say that I watched Master's Sun because of So Ji Seob and despite Gong Hyo Jin.

I actually haven't seen Master's Sun yet (it's not that high up on my list but I like the Hong Sisters). I'm curious to know what you didn't like about her performance though.

I fell in love with her in Best Love and also liked her character in Love Fiction. She has this coolness and subtlety that I find refreshing, but I can see how others might view her acting as "non-acting." In my opinion, that takes skill of its own so I appreciate her style in the sea of over-emotive/bland Korean actresses.

She's also fun to watch in Boomerang Family - a film I'd recommend not so much for the story but for the fab ensemble cast.

Geez... Song hye-gyo is a "female Chungmuro power player"? SHG is definitely an A list star with regard to CF and TV, but being an A-list star doesn't necessarily equal the power status in Chungmuro. For many Korean audience, SHG is not even a movie actor, not to mention a Chungmuro power player.

Similarly, Lee Kyung-mi is never considered a Chungmuro power player. She is mostly mentioned as a disciple of Park Chan-wook. I agree with Nicole. Crush and Blush is really a mediocre film, despite my love for GHJ is immense.

I am happy that dramabeans have some excellent writers, but Kdrama and Chungmuro are worlds apart. Please do some research first.

Well, there isn't a precise definition of "power player," but I think SHK has enough star power to be considered a power player in K movies and to have a selection of K movie offers to choose from.

I won't pretend to know what goes for a power player in the Korean movie industry. Maybe SHG is a Chungmuro power player, I have no idea.

But I do Ennui has a point. Since the focus here is so overwhelmingly on tv dramas it is often assumed that the big drama stars are automatically also big movie stars. This is rarely the case. A lot of big tv names - Lee Min Ho, Park Shin Hye, Yoon Eun Hye, Lee Seung Ki come to mind - are only rarely cast in movies - and much less so as leads. I think an argument could be made that SHG belong to this group of actors.

The number of real, bona fide, A-list movie actors who also regularly make dramas is limited. Of the top of my head I can think of Ha Ji Won, Kim Myung Min, Uhm Jung Hwa, perhaps Kim Ha Neul. There might be few others. As Ennui drama and movies are two different worlds.

I'm not too familiar with the K movie industry either, but many big movie actors like Won Bin, Hyun Bin, Jang Dong Gun, Son Ye Jin, Ha Ji Won, Kwon Sang Woo, and Lee Na Young have either gotten their start in dramas or continue to do occasional dramas. The drama and movie worlds are certainly different, but there is still substantial overlap between them, which makes sense because drama actors often have mass popularity, which the movie industry would be interested in.

SHK has been the lead in probably 3 or 4 Korean movies already, including Hwang Jini, and she's currently working on one with Kang Dong Won. In the recent couple of years she had been tied up with Chinese films, so that's probably a big reason why she didn't do more Korean films during that time.

I don't disagree with your general point. But the idea I wanted to get across has more to do with fact that you can be a big deal in tv without having much clout in the movie industry. Case in point: Lee Min Ho, or Park Shin Hye, who are both major drama stars but play almost no role in Korean movies. On second thought, I probably will agree that you can't compare Song Hye-gyo to drama actors like those two.

As far as I can tell, usually people leave tv when they make it big in the movies, only to pop back in from time to time (Jang Dong Gun). Actors like Ha Ji Won, perhaps the biggest Female movie star in Korea at the moment, who continue to do dramas regularly are an anomaly it seems to me.

Before telling others to do research you yourself need to read the article properly first.

The female Chungmuro power players mentioned are the writer Noh Hee Kyung and director Lee Kyung Mi, not Song Hye Kyo.

I guess "power player" in this context here would mean having the clout and authority to choose the cast and maybe even crew for the film they are making.

Not quite sure what power player may mean but personally, I thought her acting was terrible in her earlier works and had brushed her off as another pretty face.

However she has improved tremendously and I found her to be really really good in World Within, That Winter.... Her branching off into successful Chinese movies e.g The Grand Master, John Woo's The Crossing is a good trajectory for her acting career as well. With such career choices, I am quite excited to see what the future holds for her.

I do think her going public with her relationships may have affected her negatively.

Would have been nice if you had phrased it a bit nicer....it seemed like a direct attack on the writer......not the way we roll in DB i think.

While I agree with you, ennui, I think awcoconuts deserves some slack. The article awcoconuts is reporting from does call them something similar to Chungmuro's leading "women power" players. Sure, you could argue that just because someone reported something doesn't make it correct and maybe awcoconuts could have done more research, but as mentioned by other replies, it's not a completely objective descriptor.

However, I value your opinion and agree that I wouldn't think of them as power players in Chungmuro. Alas, I think this also hints at a bigger issue for the movie and entertainment business everywhere, namely the deficit in strong women leaders and the heavily skewed ratio of powerful male to female players.

I'm immediately reminded by Full House. LOL. My SHK's favorite drama.

Coincidentally, now is the election day in my country so I could relate to the story well because politicians and election are all over the news.

Song Hye Kyo's acting ability is SOMETHING OUT OF THIS WORLD

I WISH THAT one day I will read an article about this:
"Lee Min Ho & Song Hye Kyo will be romancing each other in a Noona-Romance-Comedy upcoming drama"

Lee Min Ho has said in one of that "Song Hye Kyo" is his ideal girl & he likes 2 work with her SO I really wanna see them together

I am a new fan of SHK. I am from the Philippines but has been residing in the US. I had the opportunity to watch Full House while channel-surfing The Filipino Channel (TFC). I immensely enjoyed her character in that show. I did not realize that it was a 10 yr old show. Nevertheless, I love the show and has been watching it many times. Out of curiosity, I googled SHK's name. WOW! She is more beautiful and gorgeous 10 years later! She became one of my only 2 favorite actresses and faces in the industry! I have been watching Worlds Within and TWTWB several times. SHK forever! Aja aja fighting!
