Sly and Single Again: Episode 14

Now that Jung-woo has stopped denying his feelings, he’s doing his best to make up for lost time. Our jealous CEO makes some big strides this episode, learning that sometimes the best way to show someone you care is to give them some room. But just as it seems that our main leads might be open to the idea of getting back together, external forces mobilize to keep them apart. Yeo-jin hits rock bottom this episode, and Seung-hyun decides that he’s going to fight for Ae-ra, regardless of how she feels about the matter. Add company troubles and a meddling President Kook, and you know that our leads are going to have to overcome more than their own past if they want a happy ending. They say the course of true love never did run smooth, but the path ahead looks especially rocky this week for Ae-ra and Jung-woo.

EPISODE 14 RECAP

After Ae-ra overhears Yeo-jin planning to cover up the luxury handbag switcheroo, the two ladies head up to the roof. When Ae-ra demands to know why Yeo-jin would hurt the company like that, Yeo-jin decides not to admit that it was her father’s doing.

Instead, she redirects the conversation back to Ae-ra and Jung-woo, accusing Ae-ra of clinging to Jung-woo in an unsightly way. Ae-ra’s not falling for that line again, though; she tells Yeo-jin that no matter what happens with Jung-woo, it’s between the two of them.

“We’ve been down this road before,” Ae-ra says. “Wouldn’t we do better a second time?” She’s being cautious because she doesn’t want to be hurt again, but she is not absolutely against the idea of getting back together with Jung-woo. Hearing his confession has stirred up new feelings, and Yeo-jin has no right to disrupt that.

Ae-ra then uses Yeo-jin’s own accusation against her: she accurately points out that Yeo-jin is the one clinging to Jung-woo while using his guilt. Yeo-jin is pushed to the breaking point and lashes out, but Ae-ra catches her slap mid-flight.

The two women struggle, until Yeo-jin collapses to the floor. Jung-woo arrives on the rooftop in time to see the fight but not its cause, and he rushes over to the fallen Yeo-jin. He looks at Ae-ra for a long moment, then carries Yeo-jin away. She calls his name, but he’s already gone.

In the hospital where Jung-woo took Yeo-jin, we hear a doctor in voiceover explaining the cause of Yeo-jin’s collapse: since she missed so many of her checkups, an inflammation where her leg is attached became unnecessarily severe. Oof… what a way for Jung-woo to learn about her prosthesis.

Seung-hyun is in the public waiting room outside Yeo-jin’s room. Jung-woo reassures him that his sister is sleeping, and demands to know why Seung-hyun never told him about Yeo-jin. He explains that she made him promise not to, since she didn’t want to be pitied.

Seung-hyun reflects that he, his father, and Yeo-jin are all gripped by the same kind of love, where the people they love push them away. His mother ran away, and Jung-woo abandoned his sister… “What’s going to happen to me?” Seung-hyun asks.

Jung-woo reiterates his intention of starting over with Ae-ra, but Seung-hyun isn’t deterred. He’s going to do everything in his power to keep Ae-ra by his side, so Jung-woo had best be prepared for a fight. “I’ve abandoned you,” Seung-hyun tells his hyung.

Ae-ra joins Min-young in their apartment, only to find her friend crying in the bathroom. Min-young clutches a pregnancy test and bawls her eyes out, worried that she might be pregnant. “We only did it once,” she sobs, and we learn that she’s referring to none other than Ae-ra’s brother. Oho… I guess the fire that scorched Min-young’s apartment earlier was also a metaphor for their burning passion!

Ae-ra takes a look at the pregnancy test and sniffs that Min-youn isn’t pregnant. Min-young says that she was only crying because the thought of starting a family with Soo-cheol made her so happy. But of course, the topic of babies has painful associations for Ae-ra, and soon the two friends are both a little teary-eyed.

Meanwhile, Jung-woo has decided to visit the apartment, now that Ae-ra and Min-young have moved out of Seung-hyun’s studio. When no one answers his knock, he sneaks in. He sees the open bathroom door and approaches, but stops when he hears Ae-ra talking about her lost child.

Seeing Min-young’s pregnancy test has brought back Ae-ra’s memories, and she voices her regrets about not caring better for her baby because she was always hustling to make ends meet. Jung-woo sinks back against the door, stricken, as he finally learns the truth.

When Min-young leaves the bathroom, she finds Jung-woo waiting outside. He goes in to see Ae-ra and pulls her into a hug. “I’m sorry,” he whispers. “I’m sorry.”

Some time later, Ae-ra lies in bed while Jung-woo sits a few feet away. He apologizes again, saying that even though it might not mean much coming so many years after the fact, he doesn’t know what else he can say.

Ae-ra asks him not to be too nice to her, because she doesn’t know her own mind. In spite of what she said to Yeo-jin, she’s not actually sure how she feels about starting over with Jung-woo. She’s been hurt in the past, and once was enough. She asks Jung-woo to let things be for now. Min-young eavesdrops from the next room, complaining that she didn’t agree to sleep on the couch so the two of them could talk!

Yeo-jin wakes up in the hospital, with Seung-hyun watching over her. The first thing she does is ask after Jung-woo. The doctor recommends more rest, but Yeo-jin wants to go to the company right away. Seung-hyun tells her to rest, and not to worry about Jung-woo being with Ae-ra because he wants to keep them apart as much as Yeo-jin does.

At work, the Mobile Home Shopping team is dealing with the bad press surrounding their failed product launch. Song-hee wants to know if Ae-ra will be reprimanded, while Manager Kam tells her to cheer up. Then she receives a call from the CEO of Shilla Hotel, asking when she can begin her new job.

Ae-ra takes the call up to the rooftop, saying that she can begin work after taking care of things with DonTalk. Jung-woo is also on the roof, and he watches Ae-ra from around the corner as she leaves. As he promised he’s giving her some space, but it doesn’t seem like it’s coming easy to him.

There is a meeting later that day about the failed product launch. One of the higher-ups has heard that an intern was in charge of the project, and suggests that she might have sabotaged the event to satisfy a personal grudge, or she might be a corporate spy.

Jung-woo jumps to Ae-ra’s defense, saying that it was only thanks to her quick actions that the company was able to cancel the broadcast before the fake bag was revealed to the public. If she meant to hurt the company, why would she stop before her revenge was complete?

Then the meeting is disrupted when Seung-hyun arrives, entourage in tow. Seung-hyun formally outs himself, saying that he’ll be taking over for Yeo-jin while she recovers.

Back in the Mobile Home Shopping team’s office, Ae-ra’s colleagues gossip about Seung-hyun. Manager Kam regrets that he never made the connection that Seung-hyun and Yeo-jin shared the same last name, while Team Leader Wang sniffs that even though she knew, she despises those who flatter their superiors for personal gain (ah, you old hypocrite, you!).

Seung-hyun appears and greets his team, inviting them to remember the bonds they shared when he was an intern, and to look upon him favorably. He asks Ae-ra to see him alone for a moment.

Up on the Rooftop of Important Discussions, Seung-hyun apologizes for keeping his family a secret from Ae-ra. She asks if he’s kept any other secrets, and he admits that he’s known Jung-woo for years. “I’ve been struggling this whole time, but I’ve finally decided,” he tells her. “If I had to choose between the two of you… I’d choose you, Ae-ra.”

Jung-woo pays a visit to President Kook, asking him to remove Seung-hyun as acting director. The president wants to make sure that at least one of “his people” has a say in the company’s direction, because he wants to protect his interests.

Jung-woo points out that promoting an intern over everyone’s heads is confusing to the employees, and warns President Kook that he’s only one of the company’s investors. Seung-hyun walks in and announces that he’s already called for a meeting of investors, telling Jung-woo that he should prepare himself instead of wasting time here.

After Jung-woo leaves, President Kook chuckles that Seung-hyun really seems like his son now. “Don’t enjoy it too much,” Seung-hyun replies coldly.

At the meeting with DonTalk investors, Seung-hyun reminds everyone that they were originally against Jung-woo’s new game development project. Will he take responsibility if it’s a flop? Jung-woo declares that he will, agreeing that he’ll give himself until the end of the year to hit the targeted profit margin for his investors.

After the meeting, Seung-hyun takes up residence in Yeo-jin’s old office, even replacing her nameplate with his own. Jung-woo arrives and asks why Seung-hyun is going so far. Seung-hyun maintains that he’s not doing this only because of personal reasons; he honestly feels that Jung-woo is not good enough at dealing with people to be an effective CEO.

Strangely enough, Seung-hyun’s detached evaluation seems to dull Jung-woo’s anger. Jung-woo says that he will think about Seung-hyun’s arguments carefully, and adopts a more formal tone when bidding goodbye to “the new Director Kook.”

Ae-ra keeps hearing rumors that the company is in bad shape, which makes her worry about Jung-woo. Secretary Gil calls her “sister-in-law” in the hallway, then corrects himself by adding “ex.”

Ae-ra takes the opportunity to ask how Jung-woo’s holding up. Secretary Gil assures her that Jung-woo has weathered many crises, although this may be the worst one yet.

Then our adorable secretary goes immediately to Jung-woo, saying that Ae-ra looked very worried about his troubles. He offers his phone so Jung-woo can call her, but Jung-woo remembers Ae-ra’s request to give her some time alone, and restrains himself… sort of.

Instead of calling her, Jung-woo sends Secretary Gil on a mission to follow Ae-ra, activating a video call on his phone so Jung-woo can see her. It’s a ridiculous bit of stalking by proxy, and Ae-ra catches Secretary Gil soon enough. Jung-woo apologizes for making her worry. After Ae-ra leaves, Secretary Gil informs his boss that Ae-ra said her father was sick.

Jung-woo arranges a clandestine meeting with Soo-cheol to ask about Ae-ra’s father. Apparently he strained his back “showing off his strength,” so Ae-ra has to help out at the restaurant. Jung-woo rushes off, not realizing that Manager Kam overheard them talking and now knows that Ae-ra is the CEO’s ex-wife.

Jung-woo arrives at the restaurant and pitches in, taking food to the customers and clearing tables. Ae-ra’s parents observe him warily, while Ae-ra goes about her business without acknowledging Jung-woo’s antics. He’s as bad as Ae-ra’s father, boasting about his strength and trying to get her attention.

A group of students studying for the civil service exam recognize Jung-woo from the lecture he gave at Seoul University. They think he’s doing community service, but he assures them that it’s just the happy memories he has of eating at this restaurant, then passing the exam on the first try.

After Jung-woo walks away, Ae-ra overhears the students gossiping that DonTalk must be in trouble, or the CEO wouldn’t be spending time in a place like this. She sends Jung-woo another worried look, while he continues to bustle around serving other customers.

Ae-ra’s parents discuss Jung-woo’s sudden reversal. Mom is skeptical, and says Jung-woo is making her feel burdened. Dad, on the other hand, wants to give him a chance. When the restaurant closes the family plays a rousing game of Go-Stop, together with Min-young and Jung-woo.

Ae-ra is the only one not playing, and soon gets up to leave. She turns down Jung-woo’s offer to go together.

Min-young stops Ae-ra in the next room, asking her why she’s acting like this when she likes Jung-woo. “Is it because of Seung-hyun?” she asks. “Or else, is it because of Director Kook?” Ae-ra doesn’t answer, but we see Jung-woo listening behind the door.

Cut to Jung-woo drinking with Manager Kam. He’s working through several bottles of soju, and asks Manager Kam whether he’s lonely with his family overseas. “It’s hard,” Manager Kam agrees, “but it’s for the sake of my family, so I have to endure it.” Jung-woo admits that he too has someone he misses terribly.

Manager Kam and Secretary Gil join forces to put a drunk Jung-woo to bed. He’s all kinds of adorable, boasting about how well he drinks and then trying to fight a wall. “Ah, you must work out,” he mutters (HA!).

Luckily, Secretary Gil knows the secret to taking care of the CEO after a bender: just get him to hug a pillow, and he falls right to sleep. Manager Kam offers to help so that Secretary Gil can leave for the night, and he overhears Jung-woo muttering Ae-ra’s name.

Seung-hyun invites Ae-ra to sit with him in a park. He’s practicing his photography and hoped the nice environment would help Ae-ra cheer up. He takes a picture of a ring wedged in between two pages of a book to form a heart-shaped shadow, and tells Ae-ra that it’s a ring his mother gave him.

He then gives her a necklace made with the aluminum tab that got caught on her finger a few episodes back. He asks her to stay with him at the company, because she inspires him and makes him work harder. Ae-ra admits that she got the job at Shilla Hotel, and Seung-hyun replies that it’s her choice to make.

Jung-woo visits Yeo-jin at the hospital, and apologizes for not realizing sooner about her disability. She’s reassured by the warmth in his eyes, since he doesn’t look at her with disgust.

Yeo-jin suggests going to America to search for new investors, but Jung-woo cuts her off. He says that he can’t continue to be good to her, or stay by her side.

He thinks he made Yeo-jin suffer by staying near her and relying on her, even though he couldn’t return her feelings. That’s not something he can continue to do, although he’s grateful for everything she’s done for him.

President Kook complains to Director Oh that a plant he trimmed earlier is once again dying. It’s useless trimming the leaves, he declares, when the rot goes all the way to the roots. He jumps up, tearing the plant out of its pot and throwing it to the floor. In case we weren’t sure that this was a metaphor, the president then orders Director Oh to pull out all of the money he invested in Jung-woo’s company.

Jung-woo encounters Ae-ra in the Big Glass Elevator. She’s carrying two boxes, which she silently hands to Jung-woo to carry. They break into goofy smiles, until Ae-ra receives a phone call from Yeo-jin.

Ae-ra visits Yeo-jin for the first time since they fought on the rooftop. Yeo-jin starts out calm and composed, but that doesn’t last long. She yells at Ae-ra to disappear, throwing anything she can get her hands on. Seung-hyun rushes in and embraces his sister, who cries brokenly. “If Jung-woo goes away,” she sobs, “what am I going to do?”

Ae-ra goes up to Jung-woo’s office, but stops outside the door when she hears President Kook inside. The president threatens to pull his money out of the company, but Jung-woo refuses to exchange his marriage for monetary support. For a moment President Kook looks like he might lash out, but instead he falls to his knees before Jung-woo.

He begs Jung-woo to reconsider, since he’s the only one who can make Yeo-jin happy. President Kook admits that it was his fault that Yeo-jin lost her leg, but that she began to live again after meeting Jung-woo three years ago.

“Can’t you take pity, just once, on this person who has nothing to offer but money?” he pleads. If Jung-woo will marry Yeo-jin, her father will not only reinvest in the company, but he’ll give Jung-woo everything he owns.

Jung-woo is moved by the president’s plea, but he still can’t accept the offer. President Kook stands back up and slaps Jung-woo across the face, shaking with rage. Outside the office, Ae-ra witnesses the entire scene.

COMMENTS

First off, I like the metaphors the show uses for the obstacles separating our leads, and the trouble they have communicating. First was the scene on the roof many episodes ago, when they start talking on their phones, then shout across to each other, and end face-to-face. Then there was the sweet moment in the restaurant with no lights, which showed how Ae-ra and Jung-woo are both fumbling in the dark when it comes to their relationship. And in this episode Ae-ra chooses to talk to Jung-woo with the bedroom door between them, as it makes it easier for her to speak her mind. Sometimes the metaphors are a bit belabored, like the scene with President Kook pulling up the plant by the roots, but for the most part I like the way Sly works in external signs of internal conflict.

I worry that some of the conflicts in the final stretch seem contrived, particularly the company troubles that would apparently just go away if Jung-woo were to marry Yeo-jin. I wasn’t nearly as invested (Ha, get it?!) in the company troubles as I was in the main characters’ relationships, and I grew a little tired of seeing Ae-ra get all mopey when employee after employee said how much trouble the company was in. The moment when Jung-woo finally learns about Ae-ra’s miscarriage might also have been a bit contrived, since the level of coincidence involved was pretty astounding; nevertheless, I thought it was deeply satisfying. Jung-woo reacted just like we hoped he would: he apologized to Ae-ra, entirely putting aside his own grievances. Perhaps it was only expected, but I still found it powerful.

I actually liked the revelation that Yeo-jin didn’t switch the bags. It was like the show knew I was worried about her descent into Second Lead Hell, and deliberately pulled the wool over my eyes. I thought it was a neat touch. That said, Yeo-jin still managed to hit an all-time low this episode. I mean, not going to your regularly scheduled check-ups? Pretty stupid, lady. Also, don’t slap Ae-ra for telling the truth. And the scene near the end, in which Yeo-jin screams at Ae-ra to disappear, actually hurt to watch. That was Yeo-jin at her absolute lowest, when not even the amount of suffering she’s been through could make me feel bad for her.

But there were two reversals that I really liked in this episode, because I didn’t see them coming. The first, as I’ve said, was that Yeo-jin didn’t order the bags switched, even though she covered up after her father. The second, however, was President Kook humbling himself before Jung-woo, and begging him to marry Yeo-jin because it would make her happy. There’s a lot going on in this scene, and emotionally it’s much more heart-wrenching than if the president had only threatened Jung-woo.

It’s incredibly ironic that while Yeo-jin and Seung-hyun grew up with their father’s failed marriage hanging over their heads, they both end up acting like him to stay close to the people they love. Meanwhile, it’s actually their father who shows growth, by putting aside his pride in a last-ditch effort to help his daughter find happiness. He’s still a bastard for ruining Jung-woo’s company, but I found that one moment when he swallows his pride to be very compelling. Of course, it was also a shrewd move, since a guilt trip like that is far more likely to sway Jung-woo than a mere threat. Jung-woo has shown before that he’s stubborn and refuses to compromise over money, so the decision to appeal to his humanity instead was pretty shrewd.

There are only two episodes left, and I worry about the next one especially. Nobody likes a Noble Idiot, and I think Ae-ra might be leaning that way. She’s pulled that card once already by keeping her miscarriage and debt a secret from Jung-woo, and now she knows that Jung-woo can save his company if he only marries Yeo-jin. The worst-case scenario for me would be Ae-ra pulling a White Fang and telling Jung-woo to leave her alone permanently. I’d prefer to see her fight to hold on to her love, since Jung-woo has already proven that he’s willing to do so. Ae-ra’s words to Yeo-jin in the very beginning of the episode were almost exactly what I’ve been saying all along: there’s no reason why she and Jung-woo won’t do better a second time. I hope Ae-ra remembers her own words when she’s tempted to walk away for Jung-woo’s sake.

Brilliant comments, purplecow. Loved how you analyzed the metaphors and character relationships.

LMJ was at her very best when she cried in the miscarriage scene. And I am convinced that CJW needs to a hug a pillow as a replacement of Ae-ra. How cute!

That being said, I am desperately hoping Ae-ra remains the cunning, feisty, assertive and determined lady she is. Show your skills and your temper, girl! Would anyone really call her cunning if she left CJW in the hands of the evil crazy Guks - especially when GYJ has completely lost her mental balance in that last scene? No way!

And you are already giving him a second chance when you handed him the boxes. Don't change your mind now that you have learnt what a twisted family that is!

Did this series turn melo all of a sudden...really wishes she had confided in him about the miscarriage and hated that he conveniently overheard the conversation. Unfortunately this episode put me over the edge and I'm no longer a fan of sly & single...too bad cause it started out so promising!

Too bad that this episode put you "over the edge." All K-dramas have contrived moments … it's the acting that determines whether those moments work or not.

Yeah this episode was a mess

Jung Woo wouldn't judge Ae Ra based on the fight since he knows YJ knows about AR and is trying to force him. Until the end I didn't realize that all of YJ's freak outs had been with her family so I know AR was like WTF? Disappear? YJ...girl get some counseling

That Guk Family brand of crazy where you try to force someone who doesn't want you...Seunghyun is the worse since he acknowledges it and still does what he wants even abusing his position to do so

Jung Woo smiling and going all formal made SH have, "What have I done," moment...you threw away a years long friendship for a 2 month infatuation of someone who DOESN'T EVEN LIKE YOU

Yeah, I thought that scene where Jung-woo went all jondaemal on Seung-hyun was really well done. I like that the camera lingered on Seung-hyun's face to show how the use of formal speech affected him more than he thought it would.

Great recap, purplecow. Thanks!

Oh wow, episode 14 really got me! I love how Jung Woo finally got to know about Ae Ra's miscarriage. It sort of mirrored the exact same thing that happened before...... back then, he was in the dark; now, he was out there, listening in. LMJ's acting was so powerful in that scene. Her face was not shown, only her voice can be heard. But my gosh, her voice was so full of pain & longing for her lost baby, that I felt it all & I cried with her! When Jung Woo finally came over to Ae Ra, saying he was so sorry, then both of them hugged each other with Ae Ra sobbing..... I was so moved! It was such a beautiful & precious moment for this couple. Finally, he was there for her to share the pain & utter emptiness she felt before, when she lost that one last hope she had to save their marriage. They needed that moment to heal, for them to to move forward & start afresh. I absolutely love that scene! I will always go back to this scene whenever I remember this drama (Good grief, I'm already missing Cunning Single Lady!)

Another scene I love is that elevator scene where Ae Ra handed over to Jung Woo the load of boxes she was carrying. It somehow foreshadows that now, she's willing to open her heart & give their 2nd chance a try & that there's no load too heavy to carry if shared together with the one you love. That scene didn't need any words at all because it's written all over their faces!

I too was looking forward to the miscarriage revealment. Thought it was kind of random how it happened. An unlocked door and eavesdropping on a bathroom convo. Wish she had told him face to face like a responsible adult. Anyway, it seemed not to be such a big deal to the story. They moved on to the next crisis pretty fast.

Yeo-jin has got to be one of the most backward second female leads gracing dramalands these days.

Her silly fits and now her "but I can't live without him!" pleas remind me of dramas from the early 2000s.

I'm not sure if the Gook siblings can be redeemed by next week.

Yeah, I feel like something's gone wrong with the writing of the whole Gook family. I liked them in the early episodes, but now I can't even stand to watch their scenes -- I just fast-forward and wait for the recaps to fill in the plot for me.

Love Aera, Jungwoo, and your recaps, purplecow!

I roll my eyes every time they show up. The whole family is messed up! No wonder Seung Hyun was jealous of Ae Ra's family. They may be a little annoying but immensely more sane than the Guks.

You've given a sign to JW with that two boxes .. so ??
Love to see JW keep his conviction to not marry YJ. JW-ssi .. please stay the same until the end :)

The bathroom scene is breaking my heart. LMJ was really deliver her emotion very well to the viewers. And when JW came to hug her, and say sorry ... I can feel their pain. These two leads actor are awesome (y) (y)

Thanks @purpelcow .. I really love reading your recap :*

Regardless of how the rest of the episode turned out, I'm still positive. But with just 2 remaining episodes left, I have a feeling it's bound to have a rush ending. Ugh, I absolutely hate it so I'd like to see these happening (Listen up, writernim!):

Episode 15- For the 1st 15min, wrap up the company issues. DON'T DRAG IT OUT. Either Jung Woo remains as CEO or he gets fired. If he's fired, let him start his own company. After all, he's the IT genius of S.Korea, pretty much the Steve Jobs there. Hopefully, with Ae Ra by his side. With her creativity & street smart knowhow, there's absolutely nothing that the two of them can't achieve. For the next 15min, fix all the loose ends, e.g. problem with his Mom & sis (he must give them an ultimatum, either accept Ae Ra or take a hike!); ugh, the Guk siblings! (Clearly all the RED flags have been waving at them....DUH! For crying out loud, No means No & the bottomline still holds true which is..... you two, move on & get a life coz THEY'RE JUST NOT INTO YOU!

When Aera first ran into JW again, he was on top of the world, King of IT, most desirable bachelor. That's less than 3 months ago. Now he is about to go bankrupt. And the outcome hinges on his acceptance of Sister Kook?
When we first met Puppy, he didn't have a care in the world, nor an oz of business sense. Now he is Acting CEO?
The Pres of Shilla Hotel invests loads of money in Dontalk on the say-so of his little Puppy Brother. Sure!
When 2nd Lead lady a was being hysterical, she yelled at her father for wanting to own their bodies but not their hearts, and was therefore always afraid of them leaving him. Was that sb that looked just like her saying those words?

New writers isn't the problem here. Its just bad writers, and bad writing. Tossing it off to the fact that their new just shames all new upcoming writers trying to break into the industry. I'm glad that Korea still tries to get new writers into their flocks, but they really need to screen them, and test them first before giving them an entire drama to script.

There are some inconsistency, and writers somewhat prefer dramatic effect to common sense, but generally it is very good dorama, and so writing also looks pretty good.
In lot of doramas in this stage they just fill space with useless problems / noble idiotic separations (Masters sun) and so on.
Of course actors are partly responsible for me liking this dorama, but it is very easy to waste actors which doesn't happen here.

The problem is not new or old writers - it is just plain BAD writing. Elevating Puppy to acting director, when just a few weeks ago he was a totally clueless drone is just a totally stupid and unbelievable plot device - and only one of many. And it does not help that brother and sister are both so fixated on getting the guy/girl that they want that they are willing to destroy the company just makes no sense at all.

Cont. of what I want to see happening in:

Episode 15- Finally, those precious 30min left, for heaven's sake, give them all to our OTP! I understand how Ae Ra feels. She loves Jung Woo but fears getting hurt again. It makes sense that she's not just blindly accepting him but instead uses her head too. I get that, but she should also open her heart to him, so she could really feel & realize how deeply he loves her. The fact that he's even willing to risk losing everything he has right now & chooses her above all things, only proves she means everything to him! I want to see the same Ae Ra that I love & admire.... the feisty, slick, & confident woman who stands her ground & never takes crap from anyone! I want that same Ae Ra to stand by her man & fight for their love, come what may!

Episode 16- Geez, I want the full hour to be TOTALLY about our OTP! I want to swoon over...... make my laptop screen heat up, for all I care..... but I want to see the sweet, cute, & romantic moments of Jung Woo & Ae Ra.

Yes, dear writer: Please get the loonies out of there. We get it. We get that they're losers and interfered, etc. We get it.
But now, with only 2 episodes left, we want our main couple! Give them some time alone to talk, give us more laughs, have a re-wedding, etc.

Give us the main couple!

Nope, sorry but not a single ounce of sympathy for you. And seunghyun, stop please. you're getting really annoying now. she's not interested. you're losing your good friend and yourself as well. and whyyy didn't I feel sad in the father's kneeling scene :/

I love how this episode made everyone shout in the comments Lol. Soju, the therapist of many a kdrama character, Jung-woo is a cute drunk though.
The Guk siblings need counseling, they are seriously messed up but I'm not surprised when they have a father like that. No means No people.
Ae-raya, you need to get in there and give that man a hug okay. Show President Crazy that he can't mess with you guys.

The one thing I hate about this show is how everyone finds out key information through convenient overhearings or exposition fairies. Has anyone on this show actually come out and tell anyone else the truth about anything? I guess the 1001 love confessions we've had would be an exception.

I really don't want to see Aera go Noble Idiot in the final stretch. But it would be pretty cool to see Jungwoo walk away of his own volition and leave DonTalk to the Kooky Kooks and then work together with Aera to build a new company of their own.

Also, Seunghyun's promotion made no sense whatsoever. An intern gets promoted to director and nobody bats an eye because he's the other directors brother? I get that their dad is major investor but, up till now, it hasn't been clear that he has anything to do with the actual running of the company, do what gives him the authority? I could understand if he pressured/threatened Jungwoo to promote Seunghyun or if Yeojin we the one who made the call. But for him to just show up and be like "My dad says i can be director now," is some absolute foolishness.

Apparently in Korea (and most times in other Sino-influenced countries as well), business acumen and skills are solely hereditary and will immediately appear whenever the need arises. There is no such thing as inexperience. You just need to be born with the right parents.

Hey, they used to run most countries on the same principle. Which is why most countries gave up on monarchies after 1918. Running a country or a big company requires actual skills in the modern age--they call it being a "technocrat"--and if you haven't got a technocratic education and skills, you can't function as a leader.

I'm be smug about it, as the citizen of a two-hundred year-old republic, but we went ahead and elected a dull-witted, amoral, ex-family drunk chaebol prince as president back in 2000.

I really like how the show revealed to Jung-woo about the miscarriage. I thought that there will be a lot of yelling from Ae-ra. I got teary eyed even from reading the recap. Its so moving. waaaaaaaaaah...

I almost roll my eyes about the taking over of Seung-hyun its just that I watched too much kdramas.

I am more interested though on how will Aera will react. We know Jung-woo's decision and he's firm about it. I just wish that she will stand behind Jung-woo. I'm wishing/betting that she will not be another (lets say it all together) noble idiot.

This is show is so great in inserting comic relief even up to this part of the series. Thanks for the recap! Can't wait for Wednesday!

Yeo-Jin and the kid are the ones sabotaging the company, but YJ blamed Ae-ra. Twisted.

This episode had manipulation and hidden agendas. Little does Ae-ra know that the Kreepy Kid is the one who got her the job so she'd be away from Jung-Woo - all the while, she thinks she did it all on her own and is proud of it. Wonder if she'll ever find out.

I really hope they get Kreepy Kid and YeoJin out of the picture, like NOW. They're taking up too much time during the last episodes and it's driving me insane. Enough is enough. Give us the main couple.

The roof conversation of AR and YJ was just crazy to watch. I loved how AR stood up for herself and her relationship with JW there though. I don't think YJ is actually your typical scheming second lead . She's seriously not mentally sound. She seems to live in some fantasy world where JW and her where the married ones and AR is the third wheel trying to come between them. When JW went to the hospital to turn her down for the 10th time and she's like "Let's go to America~" ... I just have no words. There should be a limit to your delusions YJ.

I do really love all the AR and JW moments though. The miscarriage scene was great (though a little too convenient obviously) and I really loved how he backed off to give her space. Shows the difference between JW and SH... SH puts his feelings ahead of AR's, while JW does the opposite.

I can see AR going noble idiocy route, but it really doesn't fit with the growth of the characters. That's what she did last time. She ran away from him and took all the problems on herself. I hope the box scene points towards them now sharing the burden and kicking out the crazy Gooks.

Ugh, this episode irritated me. Don't get me wrong, the AR and JW moments were cute and touching, but it's the whack siblings that I keep thinking about when I think about this episode- gah! I didn't even get a chance to feel bad for AR during her scene in the hospital because of the crazy duo- can't stand them like this anymore.

I was also pretty miffed when the President slapped JW, but then I thought about it and if he really is upset because of YJ's condition and he thinks that is why JW isn't "accepting" her, then I can see why he could get mad from a father's perspective.

At the end of the day though, this family needs therapy because they only think about themselves and then take EXTREME measures to get what they want because they think that it was theirs in the first place.

I am just really hoping that AR and JW fight together on this starting in the next episode. I hope they stay consistent with AR's personality because yeah, even though she didn't tell JW about the miscarriage and working multiple jobs, I think she did that because she felt there was no point in bringing it up because she knew their relationship wasn't going to go anywhere else after the miscarriage as well as when she met JW again.

She has been honest with YJ about JW, she has been honest with SH about not having feelings for him and she is being honest with herself and to JW about how she feels about him. Please, please, please don't change that!

I was really liking this show up until around ep 12. I was still liking it somewhat until ep13 and 14. It seems like everyone but the OTP's just went totally batshit crazy. I wish both families would just go away completely, but too late for that now to save the show.

I am more than willing to give up some credibility for dramas, but the last episode just went over the line for me. I think the final straw was when Kooky Kid - in just a few weeks - went from a total know-nothing slacker to being acting director. Yeah, I can really see that happening...

“If Jung-woo goes away,” she sobs, “what am I going to do?”

Erm... live your life? Gurl, what is wrong with you? You are the god damn director of the economy-leading company. You are like in that top 10% of women in Korea holding directorial positions. You can subvert crises and you lived through your husband's death and an amputated leg! YOU WEATHERED THROUGH ALL THAT AND NOW YOU'RE BREAKING DOWN OVER A MAN WHO DOESN'T EVEN WANT YOU?! Damn, I feel like beating you up not because I am particularly frustrated with your antics (which I am, by the way) but because you are just spiraling down into this abyss of I-don't-know-what for I-don't-care-what-reason, and your self-pitying is irking me.

Hello! Social Services, anyone? Where's that psychiatrist when you need him. Seriously.

And MinJung, I need you to open your eyes wider. You are wailing about not having a baby with your best friend's money-wasting brother. In the event that you two really get together, I hope you're able to either smack sense into him or extract whatever real business acumen hidden within him all while anchoring your money to your bank account like how a drama's second lead clings on to her 1000-year-old love (who doesn't even love her anyway).

If you will remember from earlier episode's flashback, YJ did go off the deep end after her fiance/husband's death. The first time she emerged from her room was the night JW was "rescued" by Manager Oh. That was when she attached herself to JW. Her character needed mental health intervention long before and I believe it was father's pride/denial that may have prevented this from happening.

As far as little brother goes, he is definitely obsessing over Ae Ra. However, he may yet be redeemable. First, he lets go of Ae Ra and then rather than being the knife in JW's back, he is the shield. Remember the CEO of Hotel Shilla asked him that question, to which he replied that he did not know yet? At least, that is what I would like to see.

Also, Ae Ra's brother is now working at the DT. So he is trying to be a responsible adult.

I would also like to see Manager Kam have some sort of surprise role at the end. Since he and Jang Woo have hit it off, maybe the two of them can team up together in a newly formed company. Or he could be promoted within DT, maybe overseas? In any case, it would be nice if he were reunited with his family and we got to see it.

Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if he's just playing the bad guy. Not that it's any less annoying that he involved in a relationship he has no business in, but yeah... for some reason he controls his hotel CEO hyung and that guy will end up helping to save the company in some way. The CEO said didn't know if the deal was a knife in the back or something to block the knife. If JW proves to SH that his love for AR is genuine and all that I'm sure he'll calm down his crazy family... he did say that's always been his job.

If AR does leave JW in ep 15 it has to be with the understanding that she's doing this to let everyone calm down and JW has to trust her. Noble idiocy can work if it means more people can get a happy ending down the road. Case in point: BOTC.

"Oho… I guess the fire that scorched Min-young’s apartment earlier was also a metaphor for their burning passion!"

Haha I laughed way to hard at this.

Before I get to what I liked, did anyone else think something was off with Managaer Kam/his actor today?
He's still clutching his jaw for the toothache, but he was doing that the whole episode. I don't really get why, I mean he could take his hand off. Also, when he was putting JW in bed, they shot his left side only, which was odd since both hand of his were free but then they showed his face and his hand was covering his right jaw again. Like, are they hiding something they can't show? A giant pimple or something lol.

Anyway, back to things I liked.

1. I'm going to steal that ring/book/shadow/heart trick Seung-hyun showed Ae-ra. Gonna so use that.

2. That crying scene in the bathroom. I feel ALL 3 of them, Ae-ra, Min-young, and JW, made the scene work well. All 3 of them were so emotional, and Ae-ra and Min-young's crying together with Ae-ra confessing and JW listening in, ahh it was such a memorable scene to me. I admit, it was one of the few times watching a drama where I teared up a little. LMJ's acting there was superb, but like I say, all three of them, not just Ae-ra and JW, made the scene great IMO.

I have my complaints of course, but nothing new from episode 13.

I feel like his face has been a little swollen in this episode and the one previous. Maybe the actual actor had a surgery or something, or mayhaps it's a huge pimple, like you said.

By the way, I really like the portrayal of Manager Kang. He's such an awkward doofus with a heart of gold. I love that the actor makes the character speak with an almost-stutter, and that his physical movements are always kind of clumsy and awkward. The actor has really taken this role and done a lot with it -- kudos to him!

It has been a very long time since I have found a episode of a kdrama so satisfying. Though, it has also come with the usual blah blah blah of the kdrama stupid!

The way the entire ensemble, writers-cast and crew handled the portion regarding the miscarriage was supreme. The way they worked it in, the way the actors played it out, the emotion shown, it could not have been handled with more care and concern. It also served a very good point in how it helped the main leads work through some more history, and very steadily love/move forward. This aspect I could go on more about, but . . . .

Why, why, why did they have to include the portions that just drug this other so far down with it??? Guess this is what makes it the ’drama’ part of the production? Really?? How many times does Yung-woo have to tell evil female that he cannot return her affections before Miss Dense Brain she gets the signal? How many times does Ae-ra have to not respond or turn away from, now Mr Young Evil before he knows to get off the bus?? Please, please, please do not get me started on the head of this messed up gene pool.

Two more episodes, will they take us to the wire to resolve this? Please, no. Will Ae-ra get ’noble’ and run away so Yung-woo will be saved, but from what I ask? Will Mr Young Evil really try to tear down the company, just to be 2 yrs old, fall out in the isle, kick his feet up and down on the floor in the temper tantrum he is working up towards just to get ’his way’?? Dun dun dun dun . . . .

I await the week with bated breath . . . . . . . . . . .

I can't help but cringe whenever Seung-hyun tells Ae-ra he's willing to give up his family, friendship with Jung-woo, etc for her. No doubt of his feelings for her, but did they really share anything that meaty for him to say those sort of drastic statements? It's really hard to root for him whenever he says these immature things!

But for Jung-woo it's a different story. He and Ae-ra have a history together and not to mention a past marriage!

I don't know what angers me more: the lady that thinks Ae-ra's in the way of her love, the dude that thinks he's in some sort of competition for Ae-ra, or the old dude who thinks Jung-woo is his salvation. So much selfishness seeping from one family should be illegal. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW THESE PEOPLE FUNCTIONED FOR YEARS. What the h.

But to the good stuff: Jung-woo knows! I felt like this was the last hurdle for them (so imagine my fury when I realize nope, the aforementioned family of crazy will be), so I'm glad it finally showed. Everything's out in the open now between them and they should be able to resolve things. So I am extremely disappointed that that corporate crap will get in between them. They don't need that, and Noble Idiocy need not show up. But if it does (and I am resigned to its inevitable appearance), there just better not be a fucking time jump.

Please let the first scene be Ae-ra opening the door, helping Jung-woo up, and giving Evil Dad the stink eye. OTP need to form a united front to save DonTalk. Having written that, this whole "company crisis" feels contrived to set up a noble idiot response from Ae-ra. Considering Ae-ra stood up for herself in the ladies room before her interview in ep 13 and again on the rooftop in ep 14. I cannot see her character regressing by becoming a noble idiot again to "save" Jong-woo.

I hope Seung-hyun uses the Shilla Hotel investment as a shield to protect DonTalk. Seung-hyun explained as Director he should do what is best for the company without personal feelings interfering. Preventing financial crisis should be at the top of that list.

I also hope Yeo-jin prevents Evil Dad from pulling his investment in DonTalk. Yeo-jin invested three years of her life in this company. She is an intelligent, business savvy, professional woman. It can't ALL have been for Jung-woo. If it was all for Jung-woo (vomit) then Yeo-jin should still prevent her father from pulling the investment because if DonTalk goes under or Jung-woo loses the CEO position she will have no excuse to see him.

Agreed, Yeo-jin has lost it. She needs it a reality check not a marriage. It's sad that the only person who has provided Yeo-jin with honest feedback is Ae-ra. Everybody else is walking on eggshells around her. Yeo-jin needs to stop lying to herself, accept responsibility for her own happiness, and go away, far, far away.

The characters and their actions made sense. Sure they weren't going to get the girl/guy, but at least we sympathized with them. It would make sense to go their if it were tongue in cheek OTT funny, but it's not. It's serious which I HATE in a sweet romcom.
Do they have to make the good business woman go nuts over a man, really, in 2014? She couldn't accept he loved another woman and offer to help his company WHERE SHE WORKS get out of debt without whoring him out?

Thanks for the recap, purplecow.

At first, I felt annoyed by the company-being-on-the-verge-of-bankruptcy plotline. Couldn't we just have more of the adorable moments between our OTP? But, it's a necessary plotline. What I hope the writers are doing (is not just throwing in some makjang to waste time, but rather) is bringing us right back to the time of the marriage where it all went wrong, but this time with improved JW and AR. AR has to decide whether she'll stick by his side this time and JW needs to treat AR like an equal partner by asking for her input on something that will affect the both of them. It's an incredibly important plotline because (1) trust needs to be established for our OTP to start over and (2) business fortunes can go up and down and this will most likely not be the last time JW's company will face a crises and I'd like to know that they'll be there for each other in the long run. I hope that AR turns down the offer from Shilla Hotel to help JW, and I hope that JW will ask for AR's input for the project-in-development (that we all know will be a success) and implement it (whereas he's always ignored YJ's suggestions in the past).

I didn't see YJ's tantrum against AR while in the hospital as spoiled-girl temper tantrum because she couldn't have the man she wants. I saw it as YJ breaking down because she feared losing her only lifeline, JW. It seemed that after losing her husband and leg, YJ wasn't much more than a corpse. We don't know how long she locked herself up in the room but she looked like she had lost all hope up until she saw JW for the first time. I think from that point, she's clung on to JW to give her the strength to live a normal life even though she's tremendously traumatized. I don't think YJ has confidence that she can literally survive without JW. I felt her fear and I feel sorry for her.

I agree that the way JW found out about the miscarriage was a bit too convenient, but I forgive the writers because it accomplished 2 things. First, I think JW went to the apartment to hear AR's side of the story (of the rooftop altercation between AR and YJ). That shows how much JW has changed towards AR. Remember when he saw AR push the annoying colleague into the office plant and automatically blamed and yelled at AR? Second, AR discussing it with MY allowed JW to hear her sincere and uncensored thoughts about the tragedy. If AR had told him, it would have just been a simple statement. Besides, I don't see why AR would tell him. She had her reasons for keeping it to herself 3 years ago, I don't know why she would suddenly bring it up out of the blue.

great comment! the otp is starting to trust their own understanding of the other person before jumping to conclusions. there is so much sincerity and trust!

i keep reading people didn't like the drama and thought it was lukewarm... hmm, there are lots of details that it's easily glossed over. it can feel slow. but its these little insights between the OTPs that truly keep them holding onto the hope of being together again.

i am happy to see that JW never wavered to YJ despite her presence in his life for 3 years to build D&T. thats love for AR.

Just a wacky thought - what if Manager Kam's toothache is actually a bug (not the insect type but the listening type) implanted in his tooth because Manager Kam is a secret spy for a government subdivision that's technologically challenged (and that's why the tooth bug is so big that he has to keep covering it). At the end of episode 15, two men in black suits and sunglasses march into DT's building and tells JW, "We've been monitoring DT and have decided we need to take over DT to incorporate into our outdated IT department. Here's a bunch of money." JW and AR hug in joy and relief while cherry blossoms drift into the building and down to them. They take the money and start a new business without the Guk family.

I'm a latecomer to this drama, but I marathoned it the last week and I'm caught up to episode 16. Just wondering if the recaps to episodes 15 and 16 will be up soon. I must say I've enjoyed this lighthearted rom-com (I definitely needed the escape from stress of real life) and while I always liked Lee Min Jung and her adorable, pouty expressions, I've developed new respect for her acting. And OMG, how cute and dorky is Joo Sang Wook when he's not in a tense thriller or melo?!? Although I'm as susceptible to a flower boy as the next noona, I appreciate the "older" men nowadays due to him and Lee Beom Soo. When JSW is being adorable and in certain angles, he reminds me of Jung Kyung Ho, especially since he had just great chemistry with LMJ in Smile, You. Unfortunately, I have nothing favorable to say about the Gook siblings, who started out fairly well adjusted and likable to "You're mine and I will have you at all costs even if you don't love me" territory. Also, the younger brother's constant red rimmed eyes were distracting...what, was he smoking some ganja or something?
