Sly and Single Again: Episode 11

Jung-woo and Seung-hyun step up their game — literally — to try and win Ae-ra’s heart, but she seems more intent on her career than taking any confession of love seriously. Yeo-jin finally begins to be honest about her feelings and intentions, and everyone gets a chance to share their true thoughts and experience a little character growth. Well, nearly everyone. Because sometimes it’s just easier to plan with an act of terror than admit how you truly feel.

EPISODE 11 RECAP

Jung-woo and Seung-hyun meet in front of the Na family restaurant, where they confront each other about Ae-ra. Seung-hyun admits that even though he knows she’s Jung-woo’s ex-wife, he still likes her and is going to pursue her. Jung-woo protests that Seung-hyun can’t, but when questioned as to why not, the only real reason he can come up with is that he’s uncomfortable with Seung-hyun dating someone he used to be in a relationship with. Seung-hyun then cashes in the wish he won in their last judo match and asks that Jung-woo be cool about him pursuing Ae-ra.

Before Jung-woo can respond, Ae-ra and her mother leave the restaurant to go to the jjimjilbang, sending the two men scurrying to hide behind the car. The women don’t notice the men as they pass by, and as Jung-woo breathes a sigh of relief, he notices the wrapped painting Seung-hyun brought to give to Ae-ra for her birthday. When he asks what it is, Seung-hyun cheekily answers, “My heart.” But Jung-woo literally steals the painting and runs away, with Seung-hyun in hot pursuit.

Jung-woo stops to catch his breath and rips open the covering to reveal the painting Seung-hyun had been working on of him and Ae-ra. When Seung-hyun finally catches up to him, he chides his hyung about the childish antics, but Jung-woo retorts that Seung-hyun is just infatuated and doesn’t really know his own heart. When he reminds Seung-hyun that Ae-ra is still unaware of how close he and Seung-hyun are, Seung-hyun asks to keep their friendship a secret for a little longer, just enough time for her to start to see him as a man (and not just a friendly colleague). To his credit, he admits that Ae-ra is the one who will make the decision in the end, anyway.

In return, Seung-hyun confronts Jung-woo about Yeo-jin. Even if Jung-woo doesn’t return her feelings, Seung-hyun tells him he won’t hate him — he just wants Jung-woo to make his position clear so his sister won’t get hurt.

Ae-ra and her mother are ready for bed, and Mom rehashes her confrontation with Jung-woo, pointing out that even if marriage and love ends, the friendship and loyalty from living together means Jung-woo should feel bad about all the debts he left behind. Ae-ra apologizes for how much her mother suffered on her behalf.

Mom makes a teary-eyed confession that she had tried to raise her daughter to have a chance at a better life — especially to not be stuck in the same dynamic of having to take care of a husband, like she has had to do with Ae-ra’s father. Ae-ra: “Is marriage something you’re forced to do? Marriage and divorce are decisions. I’ll take responsibility.” Since it was her choice to get married and then divorced, it’s not Mom’s fault that she had to work all those odd jobs. Which is pretty sweet of her.

The next day, a nervous Soo-cheol meets with Jung-woo for a job interview at Dontalk. Jung-woo first chides him for misusing the alimony he’d given Soo-cheol to give to Ae-ra, before admitting it was his own fault for trusting his ex-brother-in-law in the first place. However, Jung-woo then says he’ll try to see if there’s a job opening someplace for Soo-cheol — but also makes Soo-cheol promise to keep this meeting a secret from Ae-ra.

After overhearing Song-hee and Manager Kam describe Ae-ra as a “sacrificial lamb” for being put in charge of the new high-profile project (that will likely fail), Seung-hyun takes her out for a sweet treat. Ae-ra wants to take their dessert back to the office because she has so much work to do, but Seung-hyun tells her to just slowly do each one by one. Ae-ra says she can’t because she wants to quickly finish her projects, stopping short before adding, “so I can quit.”

However, Seung-hyun figures out her intention, asking if she’s quitting just to avoid him (which she denies), before asking if it’s because she doesn’t like the CEO. Ae-ra says she was joking about that, and besides, the reasoning doesn’t matter — she’s going to quit, no matter what.

Seung-hyun surprises her by saying that he’s going to keep working, and when she asks (in a nice parallel) if it’s because of her, he immediately answers that it is: “I work to see you.” Ae-ra scoffs, asking him why he likes her. Seung-hyun: “Do I need a reason? I like you because I just do.”

Sighing, Ae-ra goes into life-lesson lecture-mode to tell him that he needs to stop and that if he continues, it will only become a burden to her. Seung-hyun latches onto that word, saying that if it’s burdensome, it means she’s started to care, and if it helps, to think of him as her “guardian angel.” He’s there to prevent her from being too sad or depressed.

On the way back to the office, Ae-ra and Seung-hyun arrive at the parking garage just in time to see Soo-cheol saying goodbye to Jung-woo, and as Ae-ra demands to know what her brother is doing there, Jung-woo takes a chance to sidle up to Seung-hyun and give him grief about him being out with Ae-ra. Their verbal pissing contest turns into a honest-to-goodness bet, though, when Seung-hyun says that if Jung-woo loses, he has to acknowledge Seung-hyun and Ae-ra’s relationship as being real.

Cut to the men at the park, jackets off, declaring they won’t go easy on each other… in a chicken-leg fight. Pffft.

Seung-hyun seems the better balanced of the two, but Jung-woo gets Soo-cheol, the totally biased referee, to agree that Seung-hyun lost due to a technicality. Seung-hyun insists on a challenge to see who can do the most pull-ups. When the two men argue over Jung-woo once again trying to win due to a minor technicality, Ae-ra finally steps in and declares Jung-woo the official winner.

Jung-woo’s victory cheer dies out once he realizes that, although he won the competition, Ae-ra is returning to the office with Seung-hyun. Seung-hyun calls off their bet, saying it’s pointless now because “Ae-ra’s heart is what really matters.” (And Soo-cheol leans in to tell Jung-woo that despite his victory, “It feels like you lost, didn’t it?” Hee!)

Later, Yeo-jin gets straight to the point with her brother: “You like Ae-ra, don’t you?” He happily admits that he does, and while she wants the best for him, she warns him to be careful about unrequited love: “In love, the one who loves most is the weaker one.” At the mention of the word “weak,” she rubs her prosthetic knee, and Seung-hyun gently takes her hand in his. The siblings share a genuinely sweet moment as they tell each other they just want to see the other happy.

Jung-woo uses the left-behind cell phone charm as an excuse to visit Ae-ra while she’s working late. Even though it’s clear he’s hoping for some sort of reaction, she calmly thanks him, returning to her work. As he’s dawdling on his way out of the office, she suddenly panics because her computer crashed and the report she was working is gone! Oh no!

But Jung-woo isn’t an IT genius for nothin’, and he immediately takes over, inputting a flurry of computer code — and stuffing a choco-pie in Ae-ra’s mouth to shut her up from worrying. But retrieve it he does and Ae-ra thanks him, marveling at his skill — only for him to start bragging about how awesome he is. Ha!

When he sees what she was working on, he derides the amateur style of her business proposal (and also questions why the team leader would leave such an important project to an inexperienced intern). Although he explains how she can improve it, he just ends up just rewriting it for her. She asks if he’s done this before, and he says he’s done it thousands of times (presumably referring to all the times he tried to convince people to invest in his ideas when they were still married).

Ae-ra offers to buy him dinner as a thank-you, but he refuses, saying it would look bad if the CEO let an intern buy a meal. But he readily agrees to a coffee instead.

On the rooftop with their coffee, Jung-woo apologizes for the debt he incurred and that she worked to pay off. Ae-ra insists that he shouldn’t feel bad about it — she’s the one who didn’t tell him about them in the first place, because she thought he was still broke. But she also didn’t tell him because she didn’t want to see him again:

Jung-woo: “You must have resented me.”
Ae-ra: “Resent? No. I married you because I chose to. I decided it was my price to pay.”
Jung-woo: “Don’t you regret it?”
Ae-ra: “Perhaps. You succeeded, and even if you were to repay all that debt because of it, nothing would have changed for me. Because that money wouldn’t have been able to revive our hope that disappeared. Yes — I think we were only meant to be until that point.”

Suddenly, it starts to rain, the the two hurry downstairs to Jung-woo’s apartment to dry off. Ae-ra shrugs off Jung-woo’s over-eager efforts with the towel (shooting him daggers with her eyes once he gets a little too close to her chest). Despite his protests that she should dry off and even giving her his coat, she chooses to take one of his umbrellas and leave.

The next day, he sees her looking happy with Seung-hyun, which irritates him, and he decides to have Dontalk go through one of their annual “terrorist drills” (like a fire drill). As he lurks around the lobby, keeping an eye out for Ae-ra (who walks behind him unnoticed, ha), the alarms go off and everyone starts rushing out of the building. Ae-ra is in the equipment room gathering supplies, and as she’s hurrying down the hallway, Jung-woo grabs her and pulls her into the boiler room “for safety.”

Ae-ra has no idea that this is just a drill, and huddles with him as he gets sentimental about their early days of courtship — until she hears the announcement that the drill is over and everyone can return to their offices. Thinking he did all that just for a joke, she leaves in a huff (and gives him a well-deserved kick to his shins).

Clutching his stomach, Jung-woo rides in the elevator with Secretary Gil who asks if his stress-induced ulcer has returned. “Is it because of Ae-ra?” Jung-woo gives him the evil eye, but Secretary Gil knows he’s right (because he’s always right), and muses that the CEO must have feelings for Ae-ra again, because the body can’t hide what the heart feels. (Then when Song-hee gets in the elevator after the CEO leaves, Secretary Gil suddenly has a stress-induced ulcer of his own. Ha!)

Manager Kam notes that Jung-woo’s in pain. When he says that the CEO’s pain is naturally a cause for employees to worry, the light bulb goes on over Jung-woo’s head. He plays off his pain like he’s in a Shakespearean death scene, knowing full well that Manager Kam will spread the word like wildfire about the CEO’s ulcer — and that it will definitely reach back to Ae-ra.

As he’s hoping that she shows up to his apartment, he whines over the phone to Secretary Gil that she should be showing more concern, citing her indifference to his previous hospital stay as a point of complaint. Secretary Gil informs him that it was actually Ae-ra who stayed with him all night at the hospital, not Yeo-jin.

Just then the doorbell rings and Jung-woo hurries to answer it, only to discover Manager Kam — who, despite his best efforts, can’t cook porridge.

With some subtle guiding from Jung-woo, Manager Kam calls Ae-ra (who, as per usual, is working late) and demands that she help him make the CEO feel better, for the good of the company. But as she’s waiting for him to finish the porridge (that I assume she made), Seung-hyun arrives with fancy abalone porridge.

As the men continue their pissing contest (and Jung-woo literally clings to Seung-hyun to keep him from sitting next to Ae-ra), the object of their conquest is more focused on the fact that Seung-hyun referred to Jung-woo as “hyung” instead of CEO. The guys hurriedly cover up for the slip by laughing that the CEO feels so friendly that Seung-hyun just felt like he was a hyung figure.

But she’s quickly distracted when Min-young calls to let her know about a fire at home, and Jung-woo, in his concern, drops to banmal instead of the formal jondemal the CEO should be using. That momentarily freaks her out, because she thinks Seung-hyun doesn’t know about their past relationship.

Just as she’s leaving, Yeo-jin enters the apartment, and there’s an awkward four-way stand-off until Seung-hyun grabs Ae-ra and they leave to go check on her apartment.

When Ae-ra discovers that their apartment was nearly burned down by her brother’s effort to help Min-young with her candle business, she’s ready to kill him. But Min-young defends him, saying he’s the one who put out the fire. Realizing that the women no longer have a place to stay until their apartment is fixed, Seung-hyun offers his studio.

As he sets about getting it ready for his guests, Ae-ra gives Min-young tips over the phone on how to talk to the landlord about the repairs and looks around the studio. (I’m not sure if he purchased all those candles beforehand or if they somehow rescued them from the fire, but I’m thinking Seung-hyun is a major factor in the success in Min-young’s candle business.) She sees the painting that he was going to give her on her birthday.

At Jung-woo’s apartment, Yeo-jin tells him that she knows that Ae-ra is his ex-wife. When he starts to apologize for not telling her sooner, she cuts him off, saying she actually liked the fact that he intentionally hid it from her. If he hadn’t hidden it, she would have despaired that he would have just seen her as a colleague and not a woman.

Jung-woo admits that he’s aware she likes him, and just as he’s about to tell her how he feels (or doesn’t feel), she cuts him off, asking him to wait before he says anything: “It feels unfair that I never had the chance to approach you as a woman.”

Meanwhile, outside his studio, Seung-hyun hugs Ae-ra (no awkward back hug this time!), wishing he wasn’t alone in his feelings for her.

COMMENTS

I really enjoyed this episode — the pacing was zippy and fun, and the serious moments of honesty were well-placed, useful to the plot, and (most importantly), genuinely moving. If only the show were like this during the first half, I might have been hooked much sooner.

Ae-ra’s mother has redeemed herself to me by confessing that she had hoped that Ae-ra wouldn’t be stuck in a similar marriage, only to have her support what seemed like another dead-beat husband who had all kinds of crazy business ideas to make money that would never succeed. So it’s not just that Ae-ra failed at her marriage, but Mom failed at making sure her daughter didn’t end up like herself.

While I’m still struggling to appreciate Yeo-jin as much as I did at the beginning of the show, I did love that moment between her and Seung-hyun, when they checked in with each other. Of course, she did have to slip in an “are you sure there isn’t someone else in Ae-ra’s life?” just so we can be reminded that she’s got intentions for Jung-woo. But seeing how the two of them really care about each other and genuinely want each other to be happy helped me to truly see them as siblings who have been through so much together. Maybe I just really enjoyed the fact that the families really feel like families now (except for the dads, but that’s a story to ignore for another day).

Honestly, I even wanted to root for the Kook siblings (just a little!), because even though I know they’re there to keep our leads apart for even longer, I’m growing attached to their characters to want them to succeed. Yes, even Yeo-jin, who is still on the borderline of annoying and useless, but I think I liked her in this episode because there was a lot less of her. But it’s easy to wish her the best when I know she’s headed for heartbreak. Or perhaps is already there, since Yeo-jin seems to sense how Jung-woo will answer her.

Even though I know Seung-hyun is the second lead, and he won’t end up with Ae-ra, I still think he’s ridiculously adorable. After being slightly concerned that he’d become the stereotypical stalker who refuses to accept that no means no, I’m pleased that his persistence is fairly low-key and even understandable. Yes, he’s young and still has a lot to learn about love (and life!), but he’s also true to who he is and isn’t afraid to be honest about his feelings — which is a lot more than I can say for the other leads throughout this show. One of the things that has been most attractive his is unyielding optimism (despite whatever life seems to throw at him), and while I assume we’re heading for some serious heartbreak, I really hope that the show lets him stay at least somewhat optimistic.

This episode also somewhat reassured me that he respected Ae-ra’s opinion and boundaries, since he constantly pointed out that despite what efforts he and Jung-woo put into fighting over her, ultimately it was going to be her choice (and unless I’m reading his character wrong, once he has he “proper” chance to show her he’s not just a colleague, I think he’s willing to accept her decision, even if it’s not him).

And I’m falling more and more in love with Ae-ra! I really adore the fact she sees through Jung-woo’s ridiculous tricks, and is even willing to be civil (and forgiving!) about their past. Considering how easily she was swayed by her temper and emotions at the beginning of the show, her character has gone through some serious growth — yet she is still quintessentially Ae-ra. I feel like the show is finally giving her some purpose, and it isn’t just finding her role or identity with a guy. She enjoys her work and despite her inexperience, is actually good at it. Which is why I continue to be concerned that we’ll eventually have Yeo-jin decide the way to get rid of Ae-ra is to destroy her career.

Of course, this episode did have its problems: namely the childish way Jung-woo was trying to keep Seung-hyun from Ae-ra. Stealing the painting and having chicken fights are one thing (and one I’m willing to accept as part of the fun of a rom-com), but deciding to have a terrorist drill for the entire office and then let Ae-ra be convinced they might be in actual danger? Not cool, dude; not cool at all. Especially when it came right after their really awesome conversation on the rooftop.

Jung-woo’s character growth almost seems like the opposite of Ae-ra’s: while she decides to step back from the petty antics of revenge and act more like an adult, he’s regressing to ridiculous pranks just because he’s unwilling to admit his feelings and act like a grown-up. I love that Seung-hyun called him out in the beginning of the episode, saying he needs to stop acting like a teacher when he can’t even figure out his own heart — and when Seung-hyun, the student, knows exactly what he wants and is willing work for it in a straight-forward manner.

Still, I’m willing to accept that Ae-ra and Jung-woo can once again reconcile — provided they have moments like their honest conversations on the rooftop (where were those when they were having their original struggles? It might have saved them the pain of divorce!), and when they’re working side-by-side to complete a goal together.

Jung Woo ah.. When will you stop your childish antics?? It's cute and all since this is a rom-com but not at this stage in the drama. There's only 5 episodes left dude!

I mean, did you really have to stage a terrorist drill just to get some skinship with the girl you like and ask her out to the movies?? *facepalm* Ai ai... But you're still cute to watch haha :)

I totally enjoyed that terrorist drill! For lack of skinship for our OTP, what the heck, I'd take it as it comes. For me his tugging her from behind just about evens up Seung Hyun's backhug. Geez, the way he held her was just divine to watch, right? I agree about the date..... my poor adorkable Jung Woo needs a book to guide him on dates, like..... "Geek 101: How To Ask A Girl Out".LOL!

It was such a delight to watch him really happy with his arms around her. Poor guy! Goodness me, he sure knows how NOT to get a date! Jung Woo really needs a book to guide him, like...... The rivalry between the kid and Jung Woo was funny. But I would really like to see the kid's time with Ae-ra phased out at this point. I'm getting tired of him being there as the 3rd wheel. There are only 2 more weeks left to this drama and they should really be developing the main leads' relationship now.

And Dear hair/makeup peeps: Could you please change Ae-ra's do? How about letting it down or something?

Agreed - if he does not get by now that Ae Ra is not interested in him, then he is either really dense or getting into stalker territory. It was a bit cute for a while, but now I find it mostly just an annoying non-relevant side story - much like her dad and brother, who will apparently remain useless to the end.

She doesn't seem to like JW either but he keeps trying. Maybe though since he hasn't really confessed yet.

There are 3 children in Wonderful Season. JW's behaviour in running away with the painting makes him about as mature as they are. Same goes for that chicken leg fight. Pfft!

If Aera's brother really joins the company, the show will truly descend into farce. Plus he'll get more screen time, which, Noooooo! I hate it that they are giving him Aera's BF. It's an insult to that BF.

You'd think that such a successful man in his mid 30s, who has also been married, could think of a better way to approach a woman he is interested in, esp. sb as familiar as his ex-wife, than to order up a terrorist attack drill.
Why does the writer insist on making JW a nitwit and think that's the only way to be funny?

And that 2nd lead lady--She's been working along side JW for how many years now? 4? And she says she hasn't had a chance to approach him as a woman? Come on, if he doesn't see you as a woman in so many years, he ain't ever gonna to! Why cut him off when he is about to tell you that? What is unfair about him telling you that he has Zero interest in you? Or is it that this way she can someday say it is unfair that he never rejected her in so many words? With some ppl, you can't ever win!

The writer makes JW so dumb, but I really love Joo Sang Wook, who delivers the funny, with a great deal of charisma.

I hate that they're giving him Min-young too, because it just feels like the dynamic between his mother and father all over again. Sure they love each other, but He's completely and utterly useless. I'm hoping against hope that Ae-ra finds out her brother is planning to join the company so that she can promptly put an end to it. I enjoyed the moment between the Guk siblings because it feels like something that could happen between my brother and I.

I loved the moment when Jung-Woo was able to retrieve Ae-Ra's presentation for her and the look on her face when he did.

This episode has quite a few cringe moments for me. Jung-Woo, has jealous really made you loose your mind & common sense? I want CEO Cha to get his head in the game and pursue seriously her if that's what his heart is telling him to do or to let her go and move on.

I loved Ae-Ra in this episode, I'm enjoying her character growth but not her current hair style. ;)

I would actually like to dissent, in my opinion this episode is an hour of unadulterated filler. It doesn't help that JW is doing all these hijinks - I get it, it's rom-com but everything has to be done in moderation. That, plus I don't think JW is up to snuff in delivering pranks as Aera does; she's adorable with a right touch of crazy, but he's just plain irritating.

And what's with the hug at the ending? That cut was a bit too random for me.

Agree about the hug. And they shouldn't have had her reciprocate the hug. Are they trying to tell us she's starting to have feelings for him, when there are only 2 wks left to the drama??

As much as I enjoy the more honest conversations our OTP is having, they haven't really addressed yet what I see as the two main issues in their divorce: her inability to actually TELL him what her troubles are, and his tendency to take her for granted and undervalue her contributions. Until those two issues are addressed they can't successfully get back together, but I do have hope it will happen.

Right on. But once those 2 things are addressed, it'll be the end of the show. So maybe in the finale.

Everyone has a higher self and a lower self, and with aera, we're seeing what her higher self can be when in more secure circumstances. Okay, she's only an intern, but she clearly feeling better about life working in a company with her desk and individual projects and her ID. If she'd fulfilled her housewife dream and been the support figure for JungWoos civil service career, she would have probably been Queen of Housewives 2. Basically, we're seeing Na Ae Ara's improvements because she's getting that structure and sense of security she's always wanted.

This drama lights up my mid week slump... After a heavy drama two-fer early in the week it's nice to have something cute and silly to watch and boy I could watch Joo Sang Wook's cheekbones for ever... He's very handsome and easy on the eyes and I'm wondering why I never watched any of his dramas before/

The problem with JW is he doesn't learn. They can have a really sincere conversation and instead of growing and being an adult he... plans a terrorist attack drill so he can hug her. (Though hiding from the "terrorist" SH was kind of brilliant) The chicken fight/pull-ups was funny, but the terrorist drill. Noooo. He's reminiscing about the past, asking her out and she's scared out of her mind. Ar did her petty revenge and got over it quickly. He's been doing this stuff for 3 episodes now.

And he's kind of dumb! She was impressed with his skillz on the computer and asked him out and he said no... only to try to ask her out the next day. Whaaat.

Though Joo Sang Wook is freaking hilarious in the role and JW has actually endeared himself to me now that he's a childish dork of a character who obviously won't admit he likes AR. I can't stand the cold CEO, but the dork... I kind of like. I don't think he's going about things the right way, but I can get behind his character growth (if that ever comes) now.

I still feel AR has moved on with her life. She's grown into such an awesome character who doesn't dwell on the past. She's still hurt (seems mostly about the miscarriage now) and does have feelings for JW, but she'd be fine on her own. She really likes working and she's good at it. She could go far alone. She doesn't need him. Though that probably is the point. Her love this time around isn't going to have strings attached since she's not going to need him for stability or anything else.

SH doesn't bug me. If anything he's going to be the person who gets CJW to grow up and actually fight for AR. He's necessary and still respectful to her wishes. I can't hate.

YJ I really don't care even slightly what she does. I don't feel anything for her. Not even really annoyance. She's just there.

Episode 11 was both disappointing and frustrating. I was filled with so much anticipation and hope at the end of episode 10. With that almost desperate "no" and "don't", it seemed as though Jung Woo was finally going to admit that he still has feelings for Ae Ra, and I waited a very long week to watch that momentous admission. Just as the end of episode 10 took 2 steps forward, episode 11 took 2 steps back. Oh, Show, you would have been so much better if you had the courage to deliver in episode 11. I think there's still plenty for the 2 leads to work out before they can slowly make their ways back to each other, and so you, Show, needn't have feared that you would run out of material.

As for AR and her mom's relationship. It was apparent to me from the beginning that AR's mom wanted a better life for her daughter than herself. The slap incident may have shocked and angered me, but it didn't waver my belief in AR's mom's love for her daughter. So AR's mom's expression of guilt while they slept together was not surprising to me. Still, it was nice to see how AR's response reflected her kindness and maturity.

Oh goodness, the scene where JW said he would find a position for AR's brother ... argh. JW, in one sentence, you're admonishing AR's brother for using the very large sum of money that was meant for his sister (whom was in financial straits at the time) and in the next sentence, you want to bring him into your company? WHY? I mean, I know why. You want to ease your guilt towards AR and do something for her without having to deal directly with her. You coward. Still...WHY??? I was imagining AR's brother creating a security breach or draining the company's funds or setting the darn building on fire. JW...bad...bad JW.
While, we're on AR's brother, that little budding romance with MY is NOT cute. MY is kind and loyal. She deserves so much better than a man who will just ruin her life. I'm sure there's the argument that he's becoming a better man for her, but I have zero faith in him. MY, run while you still can!

Lastly, I didn't think JW ordering a terrorist drill was out of character for him. He may be a brilliant computer programmer and may appear sophisticated and desirable man to the public, but he's a completely insecure dork around AR. I don't think he's ever had to actively pursue her. JW's been the one following AR all this time. Now, that she's not leading, he needs to do the pursuing and he doesn't know how. Of course, that doesn't mean that I, the viewer, am any less annoyed at his childish attempts.

His father never became a better man for their mother, so I have no faith the brother actually will for MY. After the restaurant incident I was hoping the dad would grow up some, but nope doesn't look likely. Oppa is cursed or something. He comes over and the house burns down... the company will suffer the same.

Agree JW has no idea how to go after a woman. The woman he happened to love pursued him and led the relationship. Even during their revenge period, she led. He was just doing thing she had done first and repeated the words she said back at him more than once. Now that she's not actively pursuing him one way or the other, he has no idea what to do, plus he's still in denial about his feelings.

I do see one good quality in AR's brother though. He sticks around with his parents and communicates with them. I don't know if i'm mixing up with episode 12 here but I remember when he tried to break up the rift between the two and linked arms with both of them to head to the spa (I think!)

This show is in dire need of a plot. I don't really think the writer has a clear vision of where she/he wants the story to go anymore. If that's not the case, then I wish they'd move past this current formula of one fluff episode and one plot driven episode. Granted, I realize that this is just the tv model and all shows globally follow the same pattern. However, with K-dramas I don't feel as if the writers have as much liberty to do this because typically the number of episodes are limited. Anyways, back from the tangent. I appreciate the fluff, trust me, but with a quickly approaching end I'd like to see more progression.

"..he would find a position for AR’s brother … argh.." + 3 more ARGHS!

Her brother has proven himself useless, dishonest, and basically a thief over and over again, and Ae Ra does NOT want him to work there, so I am not sure what his reasons are. I am sure that in the end the writers will come up with some redeeming quality, but seriously...

At the end, can the writer just do a fantastic twist and have Jung Woo completely alone and Aera waltz off with another random guy who has the level of maturity to match hers? Good god, they made the male lead so fantastically childish!

Thanks for wonderful recap, odillettante!

Honestly, I'm quite disappointed with Seung Hyun in this episode. I think he crossed the line here when he decided to pursue Ae Ra, knowing she's his best friend's ex wife, a close friend of many years whom he considers pretty much like his older brother. What's even worse was his plan of being dishonest to her about his relationship with Jung Woo while pursuing her. I find his actions way too tacky!

Which brings me to Jung Woo. After his emphatic "No. Don't do it." to Seung Hyun in the last episode, I was expecting him to really step up his game to get Ae Ra back. I thought he would really MAN UP but my poor adorkable Jung Woo took BABY STEPS, instead! Oh well, what the heck, I'd take that initiative. At least, he's on to something to win her back.

Funny thing is, when Jung Woo is bent on making a good impression on her, it doesn't affect Ae Ra one bit. Case in point, the fierce (HaHaHa!) "competition" he had with Seung Hyun in the park. Holy crap, what the heck was the 1st game? Jung Woo really made me laugh so hard with his warm up routine! Can he be any funnier? LOL to that 1st game! Gosh, I wonder how many takes the two had to make before perfecting that scene. I mean, really that scene is just way too hilarious!

On the other hand, when he least expect it, Ae Ra sees him in a different light. Just like in that scene when she worked overtime & her computer crashed. He was then stalking her......... errrrr, I mean he just happened to be passing by & in the process, not only did he fix her computer problem but helped with her PT. Aaaah, I absolutely love that sweet "Jung Woo-Ae Ra" moment! As he was totally absorbed tweaking her PT, clearly being himself, somewhat oblivious of how close they were seated together...... something magical happened to Ae Ra as she was staring at him, ever so lovingly, may I add! I got the feeling that somehow, old feelings start to stir her heart.

I'm so rooting for my adorable OTP. Clearly, they haven't moved on yet & still have deep feelings for one another. I think this time around, Jung Woo needs to do the seducing part & he must make his move NOW before he loses Ae Ra again. Ae Ra has pretty much accepted his relationship with Yeo Jin 'cause this bxxxh had been deceitful about it & misled her.

Btw, I just love all the beautiful OSTs in this episode. Tried checking in YouTube but no luck. Speaking of beautiful songs, I came across this song "Somewhere Down The Road" by Barry Manilow. Wow, it truly fits our OTP to a T! Just want to share with you guys a few lines....

" Letting go is just another way to say
I'll always love you so

We had the right love
At the wrong time
Maybe we've only just begun
Maybe the best is yet to come

'Cause somewhere down the road
Our roads are gonna cross again
It doesn't really matter where
But somewhere down the road
I know that heart of yours
Will come to...

Yes, it really annoys me that seunghyun doesn't seem to care that he's pursuing the ex-wife of a close friend, a close friend who has told him it makes him uncomfortable. Surely he should show some kind of concern over the matter. I'm surprised no one else has picked up on this...

I thought it was kind of a WTF moment, but did not really get too excited about it because it is pretty obvious at this point that he is just filling a character slot and has absolutely no real chance with Ae Ra.

Agree. SeungHyun acts all high and mighty with his view- on- life standards, but it really is sleezy to go for your close hyung's ex-wife. His character really annoys me. Sorry, guy. Smiling your way through bad decisions don't make them right.

Up to now I am so amazed with JSW's acting. I really love how he switch from a slick CEO persona to a dork when Aera is around.

I really like how the show inserts comic reliefs here and there that will let you laugh. And when it want to wring your heart it does it so well too!

Thanks for the recap! Can't wait for ep 12 recap!

Hi Odilettante - Thanks, I enjoyed your recap.

Really like the 2 new lovely OST.

The last minute of this episode is my favorite part when SH gently pulls in AR for a tender hug. That scene of 2 kindred souls plus the soft lighting and colors, is simply beautiful.

AR could be thinking that she is paying the price (divorce) because her original motive in selecting and marrying JW was not purely out of love but partially motivated by thinking he will have a stable and good income as a civil employee.

She has received hard knocks in life at different work places and as a divorcee. But unexpectedly found out that she is capable and contributing to an office job at DONTALK which she had no prior experience. Of course SH helped her more than once or twice. AR deserves nothing but happiness in her life.

I am eagerly looking forward to see what the writer has planned for our leads.

Just anytime Jung-Woo crosses that line of manipulative and abusing his power I like him a bit less. This is the second strike JW, next time is it.
And I'm definitely not for MY and the brother. She deserves so much better than that, don't do this to me show. Please.

"Boys are not inferior. Just Different."
It makes me LOL that THEY think they have the slightest chance of impressing her. In which era of human development did beating up another male impress the female more than, say, a sincere word of appreciation or just listening to her complain?

What I love about Jung-Woo is his naturally goofy personality. He's getting some slack for being "immature" or "manipulative", but it's all consistent with his character. He is a brilliant programmer and entrepreneur, but he doesn't have suave social skills, especially with women.
And we, the viewers, knew that from the start. I think what we're dissatisfied is with the writing, more than the character himself. It doesn't look like his goofiness will subside any time soon. That's who he is. What we're frustrated with is that there's not much time left to the drama and they keep showing the antics. They need to fast forward and do some skipping.

And I disagree with those who have said he hasn't grown. He has. When we met him as CEO, he was all about revenge: Let Ae-ra see what she could've had. But he's obviously softened up to her and has even tried to help her family.
But let's remember that it was Ae-ra who demanded and filed for the divorce, not him. Why are we blaming him for the divorce when Ae-ra didn't even voice her reasons (truthfully) to him? Men can't read minds, and we shouldn't expect them to. He was in the dark and clueless, but that was because she kept things from him. And because she never voiced what was really on her mind, he always thought she was just interested in money.

I think what might happen is that when Jung-Woo finds out about the miscarriage, he retreats because of the guilt and stops pursuing Ae-ra. Maybe only then will Ae-ra realize how she feels and tells him - because at this stage, we mostly see an annoyed Ae-ra every time they meet (which is really sad to watch). We don't see any interest from her side.

So true that JW and AR did not communicate enough especially when they were facing hardships and trouble.

I'll take back whatever I said about SH. He's nicer than I had predicted.

The way Ae-ra reacts to everything makes me think she is way more mature than anyone else. She was really cool about the supposed relationship between GYJ and CJW, she told CJW about what she thought and felt in clear words on multiple occasions, she even told SH what makes her uneasy and she maintains enough distance to not make anyone feel uncomfortable. Even then, the way she still does things for others even when she's clearly annoyed makes her endearing. She's short-tempered, she is really harsh with people when she's had enough, and that makes her real. She's clearly the Ae-ra she ever was, like you said, Odilettante.

I'm glad GSH was so mature about it and gave Ae-ra the choice in the matter. I really didn't see that coming. He seemed very hostile in the last episode, so I didn't think he'll be...okay with it in this one. It's CJW who should be doing it, because while SH had the excuse of being young, he doesn't. Time for CJW to step up and start acting the way we expect him to. He's jealous but isn't trying to manipulate either of them, well, not seriously anyway, but his “efforts” seem to fall short when compared to SH's straightforward behavior. It's all very funny and entertaining, but certainly makes me question as to why would Ae-ra want to get back at all. Maybe being straightforward isn't the way to go when you have already done that once. That being said, he'd have a much better chance to woo Ae-ra if he shows off his skills and not use his status.

This episode was extremely funny. Ae-ra's reaction on learning about the drill was great and it is funny watching both the guys acting like they don't know each other, lol. Ae-ra certainly has the kind of power CJW's mom was mentioning. That adorable immature side he only shows when Ae-ra is concerned is so that I can't hate him for acting like that even when I want to!

Lovely recap..thanks...I loved everything about this epi even the terrorist drill be coz I savor every moment our otp have together.
Ommo...I can't get over how beautiful LMJ is ..she has a face which grows on you wth each epi,nvm the disastrous hairstyle. And CJW.? His versatility as an actor is proven here..n the chemistry btw the otp leaves me breathless despite it being such a comedy. So we finally got the much awaited kiss in epi 12, though not as adrenalin pumping or heart stopping as Yujin n UTW grinders in could we love or hJE n JS whoppers in Secret ,the tender chaste sealer still made me catch my breath.looking fwd to more passionate kisses to come! Can't wait!!!

Thanks for the recap.
I love the hi-jinx as much as the lovely sincere dialog. If Cary Grant can do silly and get away with it, so can JSW.

This episode had me laughing a lot, and I needed that.

JSW, a very handsome man, is brave to be compared on screen with the prettier Seo Kang Joon. In those moments when both of them are up there, I invariably pick the older one. My eyes seem to prefer him.

LMJ has quietly, without very many people watching, developed into a good actress. AR has remained the same wounded woman unwilling to compromise, waiting for her apology and acknowledgement from her ex over how they split. I am so glad they didn't write in a personality change with her. She really cares about JW and never stopped. I wish she would let her guard down for a moment to let him back in.

Totally agree with you about LMJ's acting. I've been a fan since her BOF. I loved her in Smile You & really loved her even more in her last drama, All About Romance. What's great about her that sets her apart from the others, is her talent to project different emotions with her facial expressions. She's doing great here in CSL..... she's nailing her role as Ae Ra!

Oh, I forgot about Big, regardless of the ending which btw I didn't mind, I liked her in Big,too. I think All About My Romance is the most underrated drama of 2012. Perhaps people over there don't go for political genre, hence the low ratings. But I absolutely loved it 'cause it's so hilarious, romantic, & most of all, it's got a happy ending. Both Shin Ha Kyun & Lee Min Jung played their roles so well.

Definitely agree about LMJ's acting! When I saw AR and JW talking to each other, I caught myself thinking, 'Wow here are two people who really level up to each other in terms of acting.'

The actress of YeoJin, on the other hand, is very stiff...and it has nothing to do with her bland character.

I'm sorry but I have to say this. I LOVE JW and I am rooting SO BADLY for him and AR to end up together. Yes he's childish but he's always been the insecure dork, just because he now has money doesn't mean he changed his personality. You guys need to remember that even AR has her childish moments and I think that's why they would work so well together. I like that AR isn't he one going after him (can we PLEASE change the synopsis of this drama! totally misleading) and that he's the one trying to do the pursuing. I do get some of what he's done is childish (the terrorist drill and stealing the painting), I just hope he matures a bit more, and I think we'll witness that in episode 12 (which I've seen). A ton of people are also saying the plot is lacking direction but this isn't a revenge drama or historical or whatever, it doesn't REQUIRE an intense plot and I like how it is going. Nothing major has to happen in each episode and I'll still enjoy it.

I want SR to talk some sense into her friend but I know that's not going to end well. If after all the years they've been friends and living together his loserness hasn't overridden his looks then she obviously needs to get it out of her system. I'll just be over here with AR praying it only takes a few months of dating and their friendship isn't ruined in the process.

I think JW has tried to talk to AR about the serious stuff happening right now rather than past hurts- like him realising he's still in love with her and wanting another chance- but AR shuts him down or changes the subject every time so he's defaulting into dorkiness because he has absolutely no idea what to do.

I completely agree about the flip-flop of JW and AR's characters here and for the next several episodes, and I"m so glad someone else noticed it. She's the serious worker now, and he's the ridiculous one. JW's regression into childishness is one of the problems I had with the show.
