Nam Sang-mi confirms Joseon Gunman
by javabeans
This isn’t new news, as the casting was previously teased, but now Nam Sang-mi has confirmed taking the lead role in KBS’s upcoming romantic sageuk-action-thriller drama Joseon Gunman.
Yay! (…for some of us, I guess, since it seems some people aren’t thrilled with this pairing, although I totally don’t get it because I love her! But fine, I understand that people have different reactions to various actors. And I suppose if you’ve only seen her in her recent work — say, Goddess of Marriage or Light and Shadow — you may not have seen her at her most charming. I loved her sunniness in Bad Family and Gourmet, and she can be spunky as well [Invincible Lee Pyeong-gang, Sweet Spy].)
So far this puts the confirmed cast at Lee Jun-ki (Two Weeks), Han Joo-wan (King’s Family, and now Nam Sang-mi. Her character is described as having been raised in privilege but growing to be courageous and fearless, becoming something of a modern woman of the times. The drama is set in the twilight years of the Joseon era, at a time of rapid modernization, as evidenced by the hero’s choosing of the gun over the sword as his mode of vengeance for his wronged family.
Joseon Gunman will begin filming this month, and plans to air in June.

I'm actually sad when I read comment the people against her casting just because she doesn't popular and not rating maker, even they prefer Park Shinhye over her. They are who thinks that is very closed minded person. TBWD is my favourite drama and I like their chemistry,it brings me to be fan of LJK

I am neither excited nor non-excited - but that is because I am not fond at all of saeguk shows. I may check this one out, but so many of them end up being scene after scene (1) guys with swords and (2) guys in funny hats plotting around a table.

Well, its to be expected because historical dramas are not documentaries. I don't think anyone is watching them for it's historical accuracies etc but it provokes an interest in learning more about Korea, their history and culture. I don't think would have taken a history class if it weren't for the 100s of sageuks I've seen.

Count me in as another who's excited for this pairing! :) I was really hoping the female lead would be near/on par with LJK, and I'm glad that she accepted!
I, too, don't get those who don't like NSM...I think she's a much better actress than those give her credit for, because she was good in BF and ILPK.
GoM is a horrid example to base one's opinion, because you can't blame her for coming off as badly acted when it was so badly written in the first place!

I'm not really liking this pairing. Didn't watch Time Between Dog and Wolf so I'm not entirely sure how "great" their chemistry was but NSM looks mature for her age whereas LJK has pretty much a baby face so they just don't look "right" to me. I'm a big fan of LJK but I may not watch this. A bit like how I still haven't watch MFAS simply because KSH is starring in it (despite the fact that I adore JJH).

Interestingly, whenever I get in an Internet discussion about that, the only people who remember Westerns and are under the age of seventy are Spaghetti Western fans. As near as I can tell, they killed the genre in the 60s, thought it may have been dying already, along with the traditional American costumers and melodramas. So I get yelled at by people.

Oh damn! I was one of those hoping against her casting. Definitely don't think there's anything wrong with me, since I happen to read that there are quite a few people who aren't thrilled about her inclusion too.
I was So Damn excited for this, but now I think I'll pass unless it's said to be as good as TPM. I totally understand if people like her; there are so many actors I like who aren't everyone's favorite too. But NSM does me nothing and she lacks the charisma I look for in actresses. Specially in sageuks. She looked like Jun-ki's noona in TBTDW, and I didn't see chemistry. Still wish they courted MCW or HJM, but nothing can do done about that now.
On a fun note, this is gonna be the ratings battle of the year! IOIL vs. FTLY vs Joseon Gunman. I still dunno what to put my money on. I guess I'll pass on betting then.

Everyone expecting a couple power reunion, but I think Nam Sam Mi and Lee Jun Ki do not have a star couple power, like MY GIRL couple, chemistry just average. Both are good actors but not a good combo.
Hotel King has terrible plot and writing, plus many many flaws but at least the star couple chemistry managed to make it watchable.

Lee Jun-ki is his own man. I would watch him no matter who the leading is. He doesn't need a star power leading lady to make a memorable quality performance. He gives 200% every time and he is a joy to watch. He is one of the few actors in his age group that I respect.

The only actress who was always together with LJK on-screen is SMA and they had a very good chemistry in AATM. I won't prejudge how LJK-NSM combo will turn out this time with TBDW since they didn't have much screen-time together there.
The main reason I'm anticipating this drama is also bcoz of the interesting plot, a famous PD and LJK, a promising k-actor with his brilliant acting and action scenes. His dramas can attract its certain audience to impress them though they are usually used to have less romance. So a star couple seems not that important to him in these kinds of plots. My hope is the writer could pen out well this drama to be an exciting action-packed one. Looking forward unpatiently!

I like the idea of this pairing, so I'm all for it.
You know what I like even more? (besides oppa of course) The idea that this heroine is actually going to be a woman of her time and not just a 21st-century girl in a hanbok and sageuk hairdo (that works in some cases, like Arang, and not so much in others - Gu Family Book, I;m looking at you). The Princess' Man also did well on that score.

Okay, for those who like makjang dramas as mentioned won't know what the talents of a great actor mean. They won't be drawn to the quality dramas either.
If LJK isn't the talented actor or like what you said he isn't the best male actor, why he keeps getting the trust from PDs and writers of the quality projects with male leading plots to star him as their 1st choice??
The reason he doesn't get A-list actresses is just because his dramas usually get more screen-time for him than the female lead characters.

... the quality projects of the "PRIME Time slot"...
Plus LJK tends to choose a mixed genre than the bubbly rom-coms for good-looking actors like him or the melodramas which are usually frustrating.

I did not say LJK isnt a talented actor because he is, he has it easy to show emotional intensity. Two Weeks worked well only because you believed his character emotions. I think he is best in historical dramas compared to modern setting dramas. He had more depth, showed more of his acting in Arang. Which is why i looked forward to this series along with the creators of easily best historical drama i have seen in Princess Man.
The fact he isnt the best i have seen in dramas of the male actors doesnt mean he is pretty boy type actor who is very limited in his acting and are popular because K-dramas viewers care alot for looks. I would diss Kim So Hyun from You From Another Star, Lee Min Ho, Park Yuuchun for that.

Yes, he is good looking. This is one of the reasons of him to be popular but he isn't a pretty boy type actor who only chooses safe chaebol roles or rom-com. He is not limited in his acting also, his characters are different and depth to every each role.

Maybe. TBDW was the first popular k-drama in overseas that focused on action thriller and the other action kdramas followed its idea of undercover service. The love in TBDW was penned like the kind of westerns. They didn't have much time together and the mainstream of the plot is Soohyun's mission.

Nonetheless, it was published by DRAMABEANS, so I expect Dramabeans to stand behind what they had published.
Besides, I personally agree with that statement. Even if the end brought them to Paris (separately) I think it was to give viewers who wanted it, a "possibility of continuation," but personally, the way it ended with Soo-Hyun statements, gave me the feeling he was a "lone wolf" and had no real interest in her. If he had, he would have fought for her earlier. It was always she who was after him.

kaedejun did the review on TBDW and that was her take on it, not JB, GF, Gummi or Heads. Just because they published kaedejun's review DOES NOT MEAN they all agree with every bit of it.
