Lee Jun-ki and Nam Sang-mi for Joseon Gunman

Yesssss. Casting is firming up on KBS’s Joseon Gunman, with Lee Jun-ki confirming taking the lead (which we knew he’d been considering for a while) and Nam Sang-mi signing on (probably, almost) as his co-star.

I love both actors, so I’m thrilled with the pairing and will be hoping that Nam Sang-mi’s casting is finalized soon. Plus they’ve already worked together before (on 2007’s thriller Time of Dog and Wolf), and even shared smooches! I see no downside to this.

To refresh your memory on the plot (as though “Joseon Gunman” didn’t tell it all), this drama unfolds in 19th-century Joseon as our hero trades sword for gun in embarking on a revenge mission to avenge his father—Joseon’s last great swordsman—and his sister. In the process, he also becomes a hero of the people. Nam Sang-mi is up for the lead role of a young woman who was raised in a very sheltered life, but through the twists of fate develops into a strong, tough modern woman.

On paper it sure sounds a lot like The Princess’s Man, which is a comparison that probably will continue since that was directed by Joseon Gunman’s PD Kim Jung-min. But that’s not a bad thing to be compared to since The Princess’s Man was a pretty awesome sageuk and if this one turns out anything like that one, I’d welcome it. (That drama was set amidst a very specific historical event that won’t be present here, though, so perhaps the story will set itself apart.) The writers for Joseon Gunman are less known to me but seem promising; they’ll be a two-person team with Lee Jung-woo of Comrades and Han Hee-jung of a couple of Drama Special episodes.

Joseon Gunman is set to take over the Wednesday-Thursday timeslot from yet another revenge drama (which involves a wronged father and dead sister, to boot), Golden Cross. It will premiere on June 18. Can’t wait!

And did I mention prior kisses?

The PD from The Princess' Man knows how to tell a story and the writer Comrades knows how to write one.

I'm hoping for awesome! :)

@redfox No offense to different opinions about the plot, just want to say the CGI in AATM are embarrassing to watch for me (DBs also, their reviews were good). They were reasonable since used them for supernatural beings. At least, it's much better than those of chinese wusia dramas used by the human-beings :)

@redfox Typo: ...**Not** embarrassing for me to watch... :)

I thought the part where Arang was going to the other world, with the change in colors of the trees to autumn, the boat ride on the river (styx?) and the waterfall was pretty awesome, and the gatekeeper to hell kinda startled/scared me! I also loved the scenes where the ghost-chasers descended from the sky, it was so fun!

Haven't seen Nam Sang-mi in anything. Is Lights and Shadows worth watching?

Required fields are marked *

Well, not for Nam Sang Mi. She's just your typical Hero's prize (L&S is more of a Hero's journey story) therefore she couldn't really showcase her acting chops imo. I liked her better in Goddess of Marriage but I won't rec that drama to my worst enemy haha!

That said, I really enjoyed Lights and Shadows a lot, although it was pretty obvious they were making up things as they went in the later part. The villain was pretty awesome and I liked the hero a lot. Lee Pil Mo was terrible in it though, he was sleepwalking through the whole thing.

I liked her in Bad Family, though Kim Myung-Min, as normal, stole the show.

A wonderful and funny and sweet and never talked about series she was in is Invincible Lee Pyung Kang with Ji Hyun Woo. It's from 2009 and some of the fashion is iffy now, but I really liked the OTP.

She was OK in Life is Beautiful, although the character was a little too reserved for most of the long series. In Gourmet with Kim Rae Won, I liked her a lot. She does spunky well.

I sound like a broken record by now, but.....BE STILL, MY HEART. IT'S OPPA!!! *squees to the heavens*

So happy to hear that he's confirmed. And I think the script is most likely very good....cause Oppa just picks good scripts. I trust him. So don't worry about the writers, Javabeans. Though if you end up finding the script really silly, then don't blame me....I'm just a blind Lee Jun Ki fan, hahaha.

Don't know much about Nam Sang-mi.....which reminds me I must REALLY take time out to watch Time Between Dog and Wolf. Can't believe it's still taking me this long. Ugh.

It's because you haven't watched his other dramas. His character in AATM was the most subtle one among others of his. He always gives justice to his characters alive with the impressive acting.

I've watched his dramas and seen his impressive acting in all of them, before and after the army, I watched. Although he became an original flower boy with the phenomenal movie King and the Clown, his acting has always been well-received alongside with his good looks since then. He never did dramas made for flower boy actors.

Found him through AATM but after searching and watching his project, wow! He's such a great admirable actor who covers his good looks with his great acting!! He also can choose plots to be anticipated by critics and viewers not restricted in rom-coms.

This Joseon Gunman sounds so interesting. Please be a quality drama, looking forward to it :)

Required fields are marked *

LJK may have been considered as a flower boy because he looked so pretty in The King and the Clown, but he has never been a flower boy actor. And he has never relied on his pretty looks either or acted in flower boy dramas like BOF, the flower boy series or the Heirs.

His acting in The King and the Clown was already amazing, but because he is so good looking, he was concerned that he may be considered as a flower boy instead of the serious actor that he actually is, so he followed K&C immediately with kick-ass performances in TBDAW and Iljimae. If you have watched these shows, you would have realised that he got beaten up quite a lot and went about with bruises on his face. In his movie, Fly Daddy Fly, he even had a scar on his face to downplay his good looks.

So LJK was never a pretty boy actor, nor had any pretty 'image' to 'finally' shed, and as a serious actor, he always strives to improve his acting in every role he takes.

It always amazes me how oppa, with those incredible good looks to fall back on, doesn't let them be a crutch for bad acting. **coughHandTowel/HanGaIncough**. He overacts sometimes, but never half-asses it, and I respect that so much.

And he's been better than ever since coming back from the army - Arang and Two Weeks were both quality projects with good performances from him even if they weren't ratings winners (Arang actually is his best ever drama performance imo). I hope Joseon Gunman is a hit for his sake, even if it does clash with the Jo In-sung/Gong Hyo-jin drama. Don't make me choose between my biases!

I hope he’ll try something new. Maybe some movie. Why is it always a “hero fighting something”? He’s good at action genre but it doesn’t mean he must do it the entire time. If he aims someday to be a really great actor like Song Kang-ho, for example, he have to try something new.

0

Required fields are marked *

er, Arang may have had action but it was merely one element in the fantasy sageuk mystery/romance. Two Weeks was a straight-up action thriller with barely any romance. The characters and genres were totally different.

I do agree that I'd like to see him in another movie though. One of his best performances and biggest career hits was The King & the Clown (2005), and he hasn't done a movie since.

Though his premise are usually the hero fighting something, his characters and plots are refreshing for viewers. His performances deliver most to get that opinions. He will return do movies when he finds something worth for his comeback to prove his new challenge, now dramas' plots are more appealing to him, said in post-two weeks interviews.

I feel your pain, pogo. Even the Gong Hyo-jin drama sounded interesting for me. But still....I want Oppa to win the ratings battle this time. Poor guy needs a break.

And yes, definitely, post-army projects have been the best so far even though I enjoyed Iljimae as well. Hero was the worst...I could only stick it out to ten episodes before heartbreakingly giving up.

@ Sintia: Jun Ki may be more action oriented but all his characters had their own unique flavors. His Sato was nothing like his Jang Tae San nor his Iljimae nor his character from King and the Clown. Plus, I would never say no to action Jun Ki....I'm on cloud nine when he acts like a badass. =P

I'm so excited that our hero has been confirmed (YAY) and The Princess’s Man team behind this drama makes it even better. This will be one SOLID project to look forward to.
I'm so glad he dropped Angel Eyes. That writer makes me really nervous and I'm that Jun-ki has been smart about picking quality projects especially after the army.

Writer Lee Jung-woo must have been the assistant writer in Comrades. I think Lee Eun Sang was the main writer, nevertheless if he had anything to do with Comrades he has my support. Comrades, I must say was the best war drama I've ever seen on tv. I don't even like war dramas/movies but Comrades was not only a gem but a masterpiece.

Nam Ji-Hyun and Kang Ha-neul nailed their parts and that's what I wanted to see. Eps 3 and 4 were just ok to me. It looks good but I don't have the feeling that its going to keep the momentum and the amazing chemistry that the young actors have set. Usually by eps 4 I'm ready to ride with it but there is nothing solid there to hold on to.

Ikr, glad it got better ratings than the over-rated, overhyped high budget Road#1.
When Comrades came along I thought, great another crappy war drama but Comrades proved me wrong because it didn't focus much on the usual politics etc.

I rarely cry over dramas/movies but it made me cry like a baby. The reality of war, sacrifice, love love love love love and the way it was portrayed in this drama was so deep and raw it tore my heart to pieces. That's the kind of love stories I want to see. Fantasy romance doesn't touch my heart like Comrades did.

I tried to get into Angel Eyes after Beanies' raves about it....but it just wasn't my thing. So I'm glad Oppa opted out. Although to be fair, if Jun Ki was in, I most likely would've loved that drama, flaws and all....because it didn't seem to be Hero-bad....it seemed decent-ish but boring to me.

Honestly I actually did get into Angel Eyes, but now that the kids are gone I find myself drifting. I want to stick around to see them come together again, but neither of the leads are compulsively watchable to me. ohmygod this was one of the dramas I have ever loved. Time Between Dog and Wolf was Awesome. Daebak! ALthough I'm not sure I wanted the plot. Plus Lee Jun Ki is not as handsome in saeguks as he is in suits. I'm sad that he does not do characters that are romantic and swooning anymore. I didn't like Two Weeks nor Arang and the Magistrate. I loved Iljimae, Time Between Dog and Wolf and even My Girl.

Some LJK fans pointed that oppa always choose project that become trensetter, e.g AATM (ghost-seeing) and Two Weeks (thriller, time condensing) become trend in kdramas.
So if it follow pattern, then we will see more joseon gunman, right?? Oh my, guy with a gun always looks so cool. Especially if that guy is Lee Jun Ki

Wow it's interesting to think that both those projects became trendsetters! They both didn't exactly get the best ratings despite how good they are so it's nice to see that they had an effect in some way! AATM is still hands-down my favorite ghost-seeing drama because it involved one of the leads actually being a ghost :) Hopefully Joseon Gunman will be another trendsetter!

I believes that in Joseon Gunman, Joon Gi will set another trendsetter :He will wear both Saegeuk dorn a sword and later changes into suit with a gun. My....we will have a 'no hair Joon Gi' then changes into very cool western Joseon cowboy type.....a to die for looks, amazing acting and a believable fighting scenes plus he really good as a shooter. I think "taking a back step" meant not of her acting, may meant to that GoM was a weekend drama with a not-that-good written plot.
Take note also please: the acting awards for kdramas not always depend on actors' talents but usually on the ratings. In that case among all these major networks, MBC judgements are the worst. So, good for Nam sangmi, she won it with SBS network though ratings were not steller.
