Kolorful Palette: Stargazer [Angel Eyes]
by Fanderay
I’m feeling very self-congratulatory this week because I actually watched a weekend drama for once. I’m glad I did because Angel Eyes certainly doesn’t feel like typical weekend fare, and I think it’s going to be more akin to what we’re used to seeing on weeknights (it’s even rumored to only be 20 episodes, which is a huge relief as far as I’m concerned).
Angel Eyes follows a pretty typical formula: boy and girl meet when they’re young, fall in love, are unavoidably separated, then reunite years later. When they first meet Yoon Soo-wan (Nam Ji-Hyun) is blind and fiercely trying to prove her independence, but cutie-pie Park Dong-Joo (Kang Ha-neul) manages to win her over and they proceed to be adorable. They’re actually 20 and 18 years old at this point, which is a lot older than the typical backstory childhood romance, and makes it feel a little more meaningful. When they jump forward 12 years to the present in Episode 3, the leads will be played by Gu Hye-sun and Lee Sang-yoon, although it seems like a crime that their younger counterparts don’t get more screen time. Of course there’s more to the story than I’ve just described (various deaths, drama, and intrigue) but you’ll have to watch it if you want to know more!
In the first two episodes there is some pretty unrealistic character writing, not to mention plot contrivances, but I forgave all that since the overall vibe was so charming. This drama is filled with soft moments and soft colors, and generally just feels cozy, like it should be watched on a rainy day. I have no hopes that this drama is going to hold many surprises, or be particularly memorable, but so far it’s been pretty and sweet, and that works for me.
I’m not really sure why I chose this particular image to draw since I actually had a decent selection to choose from (which is not something that happens with most shows) but I think I just like the idea of a girl without sight gazing at the stars. It evokes a very pure sense of imagination, and proves that the mind’s eye is just as powerful as the ones in our eye sockets. Sometimes cheesy stuff like this makes me cringe, but in this case the cheese works well, and it just seems like a beautiful moment.
I don’t really know what to expect when the two leads reunite in future episodes since I currently don’t see any significant obstacles to their relationship. I imagine that Soo-wan won’t recognize Dong-joo immediately, and that when she does she’ll primarily be resentful since he “abandoned” her, but I can’t see that lasting 18 episodes. I seriously hope he didn’t just leave her one letter and then not even attempt to contact her for 12 years. That would be a little too ridiculous. I’m hoping that her dad has been blocking communication instead, and that there’s an interesting story behind why he’s doing so.
Is anyone else watching this show? I hope so, since I’ll probably end up drawing it again if only because of the nice aesthetic. I experimented this week with a more painterly style (click for full size) and I don’t know how successful it was, but here are some bonus screenshots to enjoy.

Thank you for this painting. It reminds me of You from Another Star, because of some of its themes, and because DMJ actually had 2 telescopes in his apartment. I really love the pastel colors used for the painting, and how evocative the whole image is and feels.

I also thought of Do Min-joon's telescope when I saw that. It even looks exactly the same. Made me think there's Song-yi's pouty brother out there upset that someone stole his telescope, lol.

Hello Kiara,
Did KSH do that (visit Nam Ji-Hyun on the set)? When, do you know? We are talking about the Nam Ji-Hyun who plays the younger version of the heroine in this drama, right?

Hi Ivore, yes KSH went to visit Nam Ji-Hyun while she was shooting this drama. They were co-stars in "Will it Snow for Christmas" about 5yrs ago.
Yes, Nam is playing the younger version of the heroine in this drama.

He knew she was in the area (ilsan) filming for angel eyes when he was filming for yfas so he decided to drop by and offer support despite being so busy. he's the type to do that.

@ merry, Kiara, and ilikemangos,
This is late, however I wanted to thank you guys for your responses. I did read the article on Soompi, thank you for adding that. I haven't watched WISFC (yet), and though I had seen YT clips of KSH in it, I didn't know that NJH played the younger version of the female lead. It's nice that both actors got to see each other again, after such a long time.

The heroine has a few presentations at an observatory where she talks about the stars. During that scene (which was beautiful, might I add), where you see space and the stars shown on the projector, all the viki comments were" where's do min joon? I see do min joon!" HAHAHA.

Beautiful!
I'm watching or was watching b/c of the child actors. They were really, really fantastic. The music was really good as well.
I assume her dad kept them apart because of the whole eyes thing and how they came to be hers.
Episode 3 wasn't as bad as I feared it would be, so I'll continue watching it cautiously. The adult leads have managed to have some chemistry, but it doesn't come close to the teenagers yet.

Agree!
Trying not to be spoilery here, but it's a double twist on the Romeo-Juliet thing, because of that *other* original connection between how Dong-joo's dad and Soo-wan's mom died ... Then add in how Soo-wan got her eyes, and it could turn into a real melo-fest real quick!
I'm liking how they're keeping it pretty light at the moment, but be warned, Show, I don't like prolonged stretches of noble idiocy or crazy/jealous second leads!

I am with you on "not as bad as I had feared". Episodes 1 and 2 were so cute, adorable, and so intense that it would be pretty hard to keep that pace up for 18 more episodes.
Still liking it a lot, and fervently hoping that it does not fall into the common clichés and makjang moments of so many melodramas.
My biggest fear is that it will turn into yet another one of those hospital backstabbing rivalries that I think most of us have seen more than enough of.

Wow! I didn't realised that the first image was a drawing until I read this post. It's a beautiful drawing and you're very talented!
I'm very much emotionally invested in this drama and have immensely enjoyed the story with its younger counterparts. I watched ep 3 and it's really killing me the way this story is progressing. Not in the negative way but in the I-know-I-will-cry -in-every-episode-if-it-continues-like-this. The second lead guy Ji Woonie is bloody cockblocking my OTP! GO AWAY!!

Beautiful drawing.
Despite some inconsistencies I liked the drama very much. I watched the 4th ep. already and though I have to forgive many inconsistent details (oh, all the long talk at the minute of danger really gets to my nerves...and all that noble idiot stuff ... and many more), It still retains something for the heart. Something little that thugs your heartstrings a bit. I will try and see where further it's headed but so far it was quite good.

April 13, 2014 at 2:45 PM
I watched through Episode 4 and will keep an eye on this series, but I'm getting some bad vibes off it. The dialogue wants to be funny and clever, but often is not, the actors are good, but the direction is often amateurish. Scenes with more than two people in them are badly set up and no one seems to have been told what to do with themselves.
I did not believe for an instant that the idiot with the scalpel is holding anyone hostage. My junior high play could have positioned the actors better.
I'm hoping that this series doesn't go the way of Gu Family and a couple of others not-to-be-mentioned.

I enjoyed the first two episodes (loved the portrayal from the younger counterparts) and I think if its 20 episodes there will be enough drama to carry it. The fact that Soo Wan thinks Dong Joo just up and left her and the whole mess with someone killing Dong Joo's mom in the hospital and Soo Wan's dad potentially not saving her in order to donate her eyes to Soo Wan will be the main plot and secret that will keep the leads apart. Since none of the winter/spring dramas really peaked my interest and I'll have to keep my eyes on this weekend drama. Btw your drawing is superb and captures a sweet moment of this drama.

I watched the first 2 eps for my girl Nam Ji Hyun. I love her since The Great King Sejong and especially in QSD as the young feisty Deokman. She is awesome both in sageuks and modern dramas. She seems to balance school and acting well. I don't mind seeing her in just 2 eps as long as she makes an appearance once in a while.

Please be good, drama. 제발! I am so in need of a good drama to replace some of the ones that are about to end. I watched the first two episodes and came away with hopes that this it might be one I can look forward to each week. I did scratch my head over a couple of illogical elements, though. ***SPOILER ALERT*** Why, for instance, did the murderer feel threatened by the idea that the Mom "had seen the car" that struck her? It happened so fast there's no way she could have provided anything other than a vague description of the vehicle. Certainly, she would not have been able to read and process the license plate number in that brief instant. Plot contrivance, indeed! But, I felt so sorry for the poor surgeon/father of the blind girl. He seems to be a very principled man who, despite that brief moment of internal conflict, really did want to see his patient pull through. The guilt he's being set up to carry throughout the drama will probably twist him somehow, and that's a shame. We'll just have to see....
Twenty episodes? I read on another site that this is to be a fifty episode drama, as is typical for the weekend format. Hmmmm....

All sites that I checked - including the home page - say 20 episodes, which is unusual for a weekend drama. Hotel King is definitely not doing it for me and have dropped it, so this show is pretty much my weekend fix.

I liked the drama a lot as well, partly because I thought they made really good use of the OST and all. The whole vibe of the drama just appeals to me much better than Hotel King.
On a side note, I'm kind of torn over the 2 possible pairings. I know that Goo Hye-sun will probably go with Lee Sang-yoon in the end but I'm a big fan of Kim Ji-suk (even though I don't really see his character playing a big part in the plot) and I would love to see him get the girl. Thought KJS will have more opportunities after his army stint but he's still stuck with 2nd lead roles even with cable dramas. *Sigh*
Anyway, I never really found faults with GHS's acting and I think she's doing a pretty decent job so far. At least I don't find her acting awkward and cringeworthy unlike Song Ji-hyo (and even though I like Mong-ji a lot, her acting in EC was kind of bleh).

You, my dear, are immensely talented. I really admire your work. Such a deft hand.
I attempted watching this drama but I really didn't like it. Like you said, there was unrealistic character writing (I was so in disbelief that teenage version of hero was sobbing so uncontrollably because of heroine's blindness) and plot contrivances. It made me groan. Plus, my idea of melo is not seeing characters sobbing so much...it's more about being able to feel their angst and sorrow from the heart. In that vein, I hope you pick up Wonderful Season and do a scene from there. Not only is the cinematography really good (you'll have lots of choices for pretty scenes) but the storyline is subtly touching. Perhaps the best weekend drama I've seen thus far. The villains aren't cartoony or screechy.....multiple lovelines develop nicely at a slow but satisfying pace....and the family dynamics are wrought with interesting relations. Please give it a try. =)

I love the first 4 eps of Angel Eyes, the teenage OTPS were so great in their portrayal of first love and great chemistry. I fell in love with DJ's mum, why can't Kdramas have more of such mums?? The adult OTPs are such eye candies, I just can't believe my eyes, so much loveliness, cuteness and dimples. DJ's longing looks and his voice when calling HW's name kill me each time and those tears are so heart wrenching. I love the drama poster too... So cheery and bright. Thanks Fanderay .?

Let's see, out of the people we know who acted in BoF :
1) hoping that Gu Hye Sun keeps up her good performance in Angel Eyes which looks like a promising love story. Like all kdramas, it comes with the obligatory Truck of Doom coined by Quiet Thoughts if I remember correctly, the apologetic dad with a secret, the fiancé, etc. I like Soo-Wan in a paramedic job and living out the ambition of Dong-Soo's childhood dream of being a firefighter (I guess there is no female firefighter).
2) Lee Min Jung has proved her acting prowess yet again with the latest Cunning Single Lady.
3) Transformation of Kim Hyun Joong who tried hard with Age of Feeling.
They may not have garnered "high" drama ratings in Korea or achieved the kind of fans-frenzy like Lee Min Ho, but we need to give them credit for their hard work and not giving up in the face of criticisms. Hope they will continue to select good scripts and improve on their craft.

The show is visually stunning. I like your choice for drawing and the logic for the choice. It's dreamy.
Unlike the explosion of hate on Viki, I do like second lead. So far he seems like a great guy.
His mother on the other hand. I am betting right now that she is the one who poisoned the mother to get the eyes. Also, her comment about when they get married she'll tame that wild spirit of Yoon Soo-wan was chilling. Her son laughing that comment off is probably my one doubt about his competence right now.
I am liking Gu Hye-sun for this role. She hasn't been using her I-am-confused-face/let-me-make-an-akward-laugh. I think this show will let me forget Take Care of us Captain.

I did not follow your take on the mother doing the poisoning at first, but now that I think about it, it does seem somewhat possible. But my bet is on the hit and run bad guys - which could actually be the same people I suppose.
That part about "taming" her was a bit scary - and from what I have seen so far of our heroine, that would probably backfire in some very bad ways.

I agree. I miss the child portion from the first 2 episodes. Episode 3 felt like a totally different show to me. More slapstick and goofy in a way. I miss the innocent first love between the two. Hopefully things will turn around and the adult actors will have more chemistry, like the younger actors had. Why do these shows tease us with the teenage or young love couples in the beginning, only to take them away and bring adults in and things go to pot..!?

Wow. Well thank you. I was totally not planning on watching this drama, but after reading this I figured I'd at least watch the first two eps and I'm SO glad I took the time. They were so adorable!!! I'm actually really bummed that this is all we get of the teenagers because they are so sweet and are honestly to that point where they can headline their own show!
Although a part of me likes how it's moving fast. It feels like it's using it's time wisely. The thing is in only two episodes the kids got me really invested in their characters so now I have to watch for the moment when they reunite. I'm not sure whether I'll get as giddy over the adults as I was over the kids, but Lee Sang Yoon can be endearing.
The drama really does feel lighter than I expected. It reminds me of Can You Hear My Heart in tone actually which is very ironic. Both have very melodramatic elements, but draw you in with the sweet romance, the cute family moments, and, most importantly, invest you in the characters. Now that I think about it, even the mom is in both dramas (and faces a similar fate in each)!

There is something about this show that keeps me glued to the screen. Not for the melodramatic scenes, but for the ones that makes my heart flutter and the ones that make me genuinely tear up for the characters. Plot contrivances and suspense of belief is nothing new in k-dramas, particularly in melodramas. There are certainly some over-the-top scenes when they shift to the emergency room/hospital setting, however, I still think this show is a cut above the rest in comparison to other melodramas. The warm and fuzzy feels is reminiscent of the childhood portion in Will It Snow For Christmas, but better executed.
Thanks fanderay for the beautiful art! You're not the only one watching this show! It's slowly gaining traction with viewers.

Yes, what keeps me watching is not the tried and tested K-drama themes (the Truck/Car of Doom has already made its appearance) - for me, it's what they're doing with the cliches that makes it feel fresh.
The scenes with the stars, the movies, the jumping - they're all typical date things to do, but all the more poignant because she's blind.

I hope Gu Hye Sun is better than she was in The Musical which was pretty bad for me because of her weird speech which she picked from somewhere otherwise she is pretty decent actress (Jill of all trades which I admire) and better in Sageuks.

She was bad in both The Musical and Take Care of Us Captain but I read an article that she grew her hair long because of the complaints when it was short and practiced softening her speech. So far I've seen her eat like a human and not overstuffing her mouth with food like she's done in past episodes and she's even toned down that horrid stomping of her feet when she's angry. LOL.

I looove this drama!!! Ooohh and your art are so fantastic.. Thank you!! ^^
If you're afraid of watching this drama because of pre assumptions then I'll tell you to just let go of that for a moment and take time to watch it.. ^^
The young leads had done fantastic job and the mature ones had done justice to the roles as per Episode 4.. Sometimes dramas like this that make you cry can be so heartwarming. ^^ I've cried a bunch of tears T_T
Episode 5 will be at Saturday... Palii Palii ^^

I only watched the childhood portion, and I've said this before, but HOLY WHOA KANG HANEUL. Someone give that boy a true lead role already!
(and the same goes for Nam Ji-hyun, they're both impressively talented at such a young age and have the most adorable and yet intense chemistry I've ever seen in a childhood portion - probably tying with Yeo Jin-gu/Kim So-hyun of I Miss You for that)

Ahhhg . . . Ep 4 is that same strange mix of both good and bad direction as Ep 3. When the leads are talking to each other alone, the scene is focused and movie. When they've got the crew out in the open, it is choppy and sometimes just stupid. At one point, where everyone has been ranting about how dangerous the situation is, five characters have a prolonged chat, with meaningful glances and sad music. The tension is completely lost.

Agreed - though liking the show a lot so far, there have been some issues. Not sure whether to blame the writing or the directing, but standing around having long conversations and arguments when an explosion is imminent was not the most believable scenario.

That's two episodes in a row in which that young woman should have been sacked for insubordinance and reckless behavior. She's a menace to her teammates. Seven people could have died because of her little display of temperment.
That's one of the details that bothered me during the elevator scene in Emergency Couple. Whether or not the tracheotomy was necessary was a debatable issue. However, you DO NOT EVER LIE about how a medical procedure is done in a hospital ward. The same is true of almost any actions you take involving science or technology. Whatever your motive, whatever thoughts of noble idocy or taking responsibilty you might be harboring, the physical details of what happened have to be recounted and recorded EXACTLY as they occurred, so there is no misunderstanding of them by others involved or others who have to follow up or replicate them.
Lying about who held the knife and who gave directions should have been grounds for dismissal of both interns.

I can forgive the show somewhat for her actions, only because the purpose of the scenes was .. just for drama. But I do think it went too far - but on the other hand we have all seen at least 33,452 scenes where the hero cop beats the crap out of every suspect, and only 3x where the cop ever got called on it.
The real problem I have with all those type scenes is that the perp (in this case the heroine defying all common sense) never see any consequences. But that works both ways - in RL she would have been reprimanded at best, but the idiots that called 119 would probably also have been arrested or at least fined.
Most of the problems I have with this show are not particular to this show, but to many shows - and not just Korean shows. I have seen as much of the same stupid stuff in American and Euro shows.
And Emergency Couple bothered me a LOT more - partly for the example you gave, but for other similar things also. I have 4 relatives that are doctors or nurses, and the one thing they all say is that things like faking or lying about what happened or who did what is pretty much grounds for getting insta-fired on the spot.

Love the painting - it pretty much captured the entire feeling for episodes 1 and 2. (Is it for sale?).
As for the show, at this point I would still rate ep1-2 as 10/10, with ep3-4 about 8/10. While the first two episodes had some cheesy parts, it was yummy cheese. Episodes 3 and 4 are kind of a mixed bag - a lot of very good moments, but interspersed with enough stupid/dumb moments to make me worry about the future plot direction.
Ep3 & 4 I think were mostly for the character setup in the adult portion, so will see where it goes from here. So far I have no issues with any of the actors, but am a bit worried about the directing.

Oh my heart!!! I just finished watching Ep. 3 and 4 and my heart appayo... This is my type of drama but this anguish I was avoiding...makes me depressed for a long long time... I cried a lot... Soulmate... eternal kind of love... SIGH.... I am watching it!
Gu Hye Sun has improved soooo much! She acted well and expressed her emotions so well. Also thank God, that weird accent is gone from The Musical. She looks so fragile, like a doll. So pretty!
Lee Sang-yoon, I am your official fan now!

I like the drama enough to watch it without fast-forwarding, but... Does every KDrama nowadays have to start with killing off parents? Out of the 4 parents of the lead couple here, 1 (one) survived the first few episodes.

They only kill the parents if they are GOOD parents. The mean, greedy, evil ones live forever.

I felt a very intense (but beautiful) feeling of longing from that image (as well for the character). Hope this Drama will turn into a classic.

idk if I'm going to watch this, but it doesn't seem fair that Kang HaNeul has such a small amount of screen time (again). He needs a lead role. Will watch the first few episodes. to see how it is (maybe). My drama list is just getting ridiculously long. Too many dramas, too little time.

Episode 4 was great! Not only am I a Boston native, but a huge Bruce Springsteen fan as well. The scene in the bar in Boston with "Hungry Heart" playing made me feel so good.
