Jang Nara and Jang Hyuk reunite for summer rom-com
by girlfriday
It’s hard to believe it’s been twelve years since Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara shared the small screen in 2002’s Successful Story of a Bright Girl, but it seems just long enough for everyone to welcome their onscreen reunion with fond nostalgic feelings and anticipation. They’ll be returning to dramaland this summer to headline a romantic comedy–a remake of the hit Taiwanese drama Fated to Love You, which aired to record ratings in Taiwan in 2008.
The romantic comedy remake will star Jang Hyuk as a chaebol heir, the ninth generation only son of a strict family that rules his personal life with an iron fist. He’s unrealistically perfect, and your classic prickly-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside kind of hero. Jang Nara’s heroine is described as a weak girl whose only good trait is that she’s kind. (Seriously, Show, seriously?) She’s compared to a post-it’s disposability–important to no one, without charm, without a boyfriend, and without money.
The character types seem a little dated on paper (for obvious reasons, since it’s based on an older drama), so I’m hoping we’ll get some updates that keep it from feeling like a story set six years ago. If it follows the original drama’s trajectory, they’ll have a one-night stand that leads to a pregnancy, and an arranged marriage forced by the family. Naturally, it’s all backwards: baby leads to marriage, and marriage leads to love.
Jang Hyuk basically hasn’t been in a rom-com since Bright Girl, having spent the last twelve years being a badass (Chuno, Tree With Deep Roots, IRIS 2, the list goes on). It’s always a riot when the guys who seem too cool for school break from their usual image and go for the comedy (see: Joo Sang-wook, So Ji-sub), so I’m looking forward to the change-up.
The drama is set to air on MBC’s summer slate, in the Wednesday-Thursday slot following Kim Myung-min’s A New Leaf. It’ll be helmed by the PD of Feast of the Gods and Queen of the Classroom, and two writers, one of whom worked on Soulmate and the other on I Trusted a Man. That puts the premiere in early July.

i have mixed feelings about this so...
i'm excited to see them back together. i rewatched successful story of a bright girl a few weeks ago and went, "wow...jang hyuk has surely grown."
i enjoyed fated to love you but i REALLY REALLY hope that this version updates it A LOT.
jang hyuk has worked so hard on being a bad ass (minus his stints on family outing that just made me SMH lol) and i love him dearly for his bad arse-ry. is anyone else feeling a little scared about seeing him back in a rom-com? don't ruin him for me...please!!! (hahaha)

In person, JH is a gentle guy compare to most of his character. he has a funny side too. and we can see that most in talk show or variety show that he was in. FO episode with him and Dragon Brothers is one of my favorite (well, i always favo whatever he's in. LOL)
i'm more scared of popularity of Taiwan FTLY than he's doing the show. please be good show so my Hyukie oppa doesn't being judge. i sure hate that.

I like that show too, it was a little different from most rom-coms. I think that is the only drama I have seen her in.

OMG this was ages ago. It is so old that I cannot remember a single thing about the drama. I vaguely remember a few snapshots of her in a wedding dress but that's it. It always scares me when I can't remember whole dramas. Like where did my 16 hours go to?

It's totally typical but exactly my cup of tea to watch in bed stuffing my face and giggling. yes bring it ON! I love forced marriages that lead to love. it brings back memories of so many dramas that I love.

I will watch the premiere solely for the JangJang pairing and see how it goes from there. Honestly speaking, for the Taiwanese (original) version the whole thing was such a drag that I gave up a few episodes after her miscarriage. I liked the first part despite the heroine's weak personality but the second part was shit because it's like a repetition and the plot is so freaking typical...

Jang Nara = Sticky Notes Girl?
Hmm, can she provide ripples of tears as much as Joe Chen in this remake? I haven't seen JN's work.
Jang Hyuk = Caterpillar Eyebrows Man-Boy?
I hope he's confidence enough to exaggerate in his role as like Ethan Ruan had sacrificed for his part in the TW-ese version. Doesn't have to be the eyebrows but you get my point, right? FTLY fans??
So excited to find out whom will play Dylan and Anna.

Hi, i just saw this posting you have. I been trying to remember Fated to Love you and connect it with the picture you posted, but as far as I remember, the picture (Taiwanese) you posted is not from the drama Fated to Love you. I was an avid fan of that series and I remember that the picture you posted was from another drama.
Anyways, hope this will be a good drama.
