Jaejoong’s first stills as a gangster in Triangle
by javabeans
Here we go with the first stills of Triangle, MBC’s upcoming melodrama about three brothers who are separated in childhood after their parents die, who grow up without knowing anything of each other’s whereabouts, and then reunite twenty years later.
These stills feature Jaejoong, playing the middle brother who grows up to become a lowlife gangster; his older brother Lee Beom-soo becomes a detective, while little bro Im Shi-wan is adopted into a chaebol family. No doubt the reunion will be emotionally fraught, since it sounds as some of the brothers aren’t as connected to their earlier lives as the others. Jaejoong, for instance, has lost his birth name and goes by a different name as an adult, while Shi-wan’s repressed fear is that his adopted family will ditch him too. I expect Lee Beom-soo to carry the burden of guilt and responsibility for being the hyung.
I’m still waiting to hear more about the plot in the present day, because most of what we’ve been given is the backstory and setup. Until then, we can enjoy these pics of badass Jaejoong, who’ll get to wear lots of leather, tool around on a motorcycle, and associate with assorted ruffians. What’s not to like.
Triangle is three weeks from its May 5 premiere; it’ll take over the Empress Ki slot on Mondays and Tuesdays.

This is probably a sort of flashback? If the info is correct and he gets to be big in his organization, this doesn't look like it. This is goon level.
I buy gangster though. Gangsters don't have to look like walking macho stereotypes. Of course, having had a tough life, you wouldn't look as flawless as he does, but we can't very well destroy the boy's face just for a role.
It's the acting I worry more about, given this is melodrama, but Jae Joong does have capacity for learning and since the Idol Whisperer is there, it might be ok.

For Age Of Feeling they totally bruised that idols face for a gangster role where he fought like no tomorrow- now what was his name...

But Jung Tae was an impulsive and quite slow guy who couldn't go two steps without a fight. There has to be a reason for bruising, but I also did not mean bruising.
I meant wrinkles, saggy face, the signs of a tough life, stress etc. This is something you can't really give a person unless you go for make up effects.
But this is Korean drama and we can't have the pretty boy uglified, of course. But a gangster with pretty features is not unrealistic in itself. Just in Dramaland which cannot resist making everyone clean and "perfect".

Well, make up can take care of the image problem. But more than his face, it's his voice that worries me.
Have you ever heard Jaejoong talk? This is not really a voice that will strike fear into the heart of his ennemies.
Orion

@mudaepo
Again, people with non-threatening voices can be gangsters. Looks do not determine character, job or outlook on life. It is just stereotypes and perceptions that make the mistaken soft looks = soft personality association.
What it really comes down to in fiction though is acting, along with writing and directing to form convincing scenes that fully convey that the character is such a man.
So as I said, the acting itself is my only worry. A seasoned actor would sell anything, no matter what image, face or voice. I just do not think Jae Joong is there yet. So the writer and PD will need to help a lot if it will even be possible to see him as what Dong Cheol is.

@Orion
I actually agree with you. I just forgot to mention what I regarded as obvious: Jaejoong isn't an acting genius. I also think that a great actor can be credible in almost any role.
If I were to take Heartless City as an example, Kim Byung Ok didn't really need any acting chops to make us believe he was Scale, the scary drug lord, he already has a face that screams "villain". On the other side, Jung Kyung Ho and Kim Yoo Mi wouldn't have made convincing gangsters if they didn't have real acting skills.
Unfortunately for Jaejoong, I believe that given his face and voice, he has a serious handicap that his acting skills are nowhere near enough to make up for.

@mudaepo
Yep. It's the acting that's the issue. And of course, the idol image, which always makes it hard for the fandom and many around to look beyond it. Whatever they do, it will have to be pretty impressive to get past those issues.
It's the first time I see Jae Joong in a melodrama (I consider 'Dr. Jin' an accidental comedy) and it has been a while, so I will of course give the kid a chance, but worries I got plenty of as well.

@ mudaepo. Your comment is funny... Regarding his voice, I agree. I love him though. I like androgynous looking men but yes, he can't act that well and he needs voice modulation. He can be the runaway street smart boy but he looks too "soft" for gangster. Lately everyone is proving me wrong so I guess it will a surprise treat.
P.S. Gu Hye Sun is surprise treat in Angel Eyes.

maybe they're going for a soft-hearted puppy dog gangster adopted into a gang of protective hyungs?
i also have a hard time buying such flawless complexion as a rough-and-ready gangster...but hey, there are always exceptions to the rule and at least he's pretty!

@mudaepo On the other side, Jung Kyung Ho and Kim Yoo Mi wouldn’t have made convincing gangsters if they didn’t have real acting skills.
they were both SO GOOD, and it didn't matter that it was a drastic departure from how we'd previously seen them (even in JKH's Time Between Dog & Wolf days). You're right that they could not have pulled it off without serious acting skill, because the fearsomeness of Baksa was even greater because it came from a guy who looked so slight compared to your usual bruiser. Even if JKH is actually six feet tall in real life.

I hope the role itself at least helps with that. They'll need all the help they can get to sell it, given the audience can't see past the idol and see the character.

Some people's complexion is so pale that it's hard for them to tan unless they bake in the sun for hours. But most Koreans prize pale skin so there's probably a few pale-skinned gangsters running around in Korea.
I rather that they leave his complexion alone instead of mucking his image up with tan make-up.

Korean skin is pale compared to other asians but I don't its hard to tan. Lee min ho got tan just after spending a few days on LA beach. They tan pretty easily compared to caucasians I think they go out in the sun using sunscreen of course get a tan instead of looking like tomato. Caucasian skin tends to get really red instead of getting a tan.

This sounds a lot like Giant. Which means I definitely look forward to it. There's something so heartwarming about estranged siblings finding their way back to one another. When Giant did it, I always looked forward to the reunions. I even wished the two brothers, Kang-mo and Sang-mo, had prolonged their misunderstandings of one another before finally uniting. Hopefully this drama does something like that. Even Wonderful Season is playing with this kind of trope.

I am excited for this drama, but I agree that KJJ has not yet settled my fears for his acting ability. The plot DOES sound intriguing, though.
If KJJ hasn't quite gotten his acting skills up to par, maybe he could just…be quiet. A quiet, soulful eyed brother would be nice.
With more than one "Idol" on the cast list, it *can* distract from the plot, because 1.) you can't always separate them from their "other line of work" 2.) the fangirl/boy commentaries that defend or attack him/her regardless of validity 3.) sometimes, let's be honest, actors they are not cut out to be.
I have hopes for this drama, but time (and obviously, their efforts) will tell as the drama unfolds. The eternal optimist in me really wants this to pull off well. Please, no Dr. Jin! I don't think my heart or stomach can take it.

Well in Protect the Boss, he could convincingly convey gloomy, torn, broody as well as happy emotions. So, I have hopes for him to go even further to angry and whatever it is that makes a gangster.
As to Dr. Jin. I would read HeadsNo2 recaps and then watch the few moving scenes every few episodes. The worth watching scenes almost always included Jaejoong's character. He was the actor who kept going while the show fell around him.
Haven't seen anything else that he has done. So I don't have an idol image to get past. Perhaps that is why I can be a fan of his acting.

Jaejoong always gives people surprises. Who would expected this delicate pretty boy would scream a song as dark and sinister as "Mine"? But he did. To be honest that song, the lyrics ("You are terrible, It’s like you are diseased
Your congested spit mixed with blood.."), the music, the way he sang that song, gave me a new perspective about Jaejoong. For me he's not a delicate flower anymore.

Dark hair is the best hair.
When they said he would play a gangster, I was actually imagining just this. Rather than a spiffy black suit of gangsters wanting to be business men, I prefer this. I dunno, it seems more...honest? Lol, I dunno what word to use.
I am quite interested in the story and seeing the relationship of the three brothers. I like all men's acting. I only really know actor Jaejoong and actor Im Shi Wan and you know...I really like them both. And with Lee Bum Soo it's a nice trifecta.

Its hilarious reading some comments above. It's just because maybe some of you have made 'specific criteria' for gangster.
Try open your mind and see this world, anybody can be a gangster from a child to elder either man or woman, no matter good looking or bad looking. (as you know, his character in here is the most unfortunate child, and he grows up in dark environment. So, does it mean it's wrong to be a gangster with such 'pretty face'?) lol come on.
So, throw away your narrow thinking. Or maybe because you have been watching drama a lot and forget whats the people outside look like.

[TRANS][MBC] #TRIANGLE Drama Introduction
Aim:
Being writer for 20 years, I have written various dramas including period drama, historical drama, and modern drama. In one way or another, the outcome has never been bad. However, there is always something missing in my heart. As the dramas I have written so far focused on the story, I couldn’t create an interesting character that lives for a long time in the viewers’ impression. And I couldn’t write a melo-drama which makes me feel satisfied.
I started this drama in order to fulfill these 2 desires.
This is a melo-drama led by an interesting character.
Above the story of 3 brothers who have separated for over 20 years after losing their parents, lived without knowing about each other’s existence and reunited by destiny; the drama narrates the story of their success and love. Even if the world changes, the society changes, the power of true love is forever. This classic subject will be solved in a new way and new writing technique.
Introduction to the production crew:
Planning: Lee SungWoo (A Hundred Years’ Inheritance, Hooray For Love, Golden Fish, etc.)
Producing: Jung Taewon (Taewon Ent.)
Writing: Choi WanGyu (Guam Heo Jun, Lights and Shadows, Midas, etc.)
Directing: Yoo ChulYong (Poseidon, Swallow the Sun, HIT, Sad Love Story, Into the Storm, etc.); Choi JungGyu (Lee Sang that Lee Sang, Two Weeks, Horse Doctor)

I'm a JYJ fan, and from the beginning of their careers under SM as members of DBSK, Yoochun and Jaejoong always had the main roles in whatever acting production they were put in. They were the best of the entire group.
Since they've struck out on their own and are using the drama world to continue making their marks, I do not begrudge them the chance to grow with each project.
As with any drama production no matter what the genre, if the directing and scriptwriting suck, there is absolutely no actor in the world that can save it. I don't expect them to be anything but what they are, acting greenhorns who are trying to get better as they go along. And I've seen them improve from project to project.
Of all Jaejoong's works, Dr. Jin is the only one I could not get past the 4th episode. It was not because of any lacking on his part. It's because the director and scriptwriter, and editor, all needed to be taken behind the barn and shot! They gave a classic example of 'how to' mess up a Korean drama. I still have dreams of gathering nerve and going back to watch it. It's just that I know I have to watch all the drama to keep up with the plot, not just the scenes Jaejoong is in. That is a VERY TALL order.
I too look askance at the pale part, simply because I have never seen a gangster story where the gangsters all stay indoors and don't get out from time to time. Doesn't matter what level they are on. Something about that doesn't correlate. But this is a small issue, not totally relevant to the story. The voice thing, I don't think is that much of an issue because a good director will ask for a change in tone. Just like there has to be a change of voice in a saeguk drama.
What I think will be one of Jaejoong's strongest assets is his eyes. He has some of the most impressive eyes around. And it is possible to send huge messages by the look in the eyes. This is where I think he will make his biggest impression in the role. Let's not forget, at least I hope this is the case, this drama should evolve around the interaction between the three brothers. This is where spoken words and visuals should take center stage. IMHO.

i'm glad that jaejoong is taking on a new project. i'm interested to see how he'simproved. man, i didn't even want to touch Dr. Jin after the first few episodes. i mean, i tried to give it a chance seeing as i like song seunghun and enjoy jaejoong's music but i just couldn't. especially when jaejoong was terribly horribly stiff. i just couldn't bring myself to continue so that i could avoid smack talking the heck outta his acting and the drama itself. of course i took into account how he's still relatively a newcomer in acting not to mention he was playing a sageuk role but i'd rather not watch something i don't enjoy than watching and being unhappy the whole time.
i hope he does well this time. i'm still having doubts seeing as he's a pretty face and his voice isn't exactly gangster material, but i was surprised by lee junki in 2weeks and jaejoong's voice can work depending on how he chooses to interpret the character. so i'm hoping for good things.
p/s: heck yeah im siwan!! love the dude.

Jaejoong's acting was actually very nice for his role. He even sneered really well. The story was a little slow in the beginning and nothing to do with his acting, but in the middle, oh, my GOD! I couldn't stop watching to the end! Very nice. I've always liked his singing voice, but I'm not a fan girl-fan girl. His talent, for me, is incredible (songwise). This role was actually a breakthrough for him. He can do tough... his face does get messed up, but cleaned up right after. LOL! Only in KDrama. I like him in this one. Pretty Boy in Heaven's Postman, emotional in both PTB and Dr. Jin, but he took on two amazing roles here. And it was incredible. He delivered what I thought the drama needed. His life conflict and his own 'honor'. Even the love part seemed perfect for the storyline which main focus had been on the three brothers. And that was fine. I think everyone can see that Jaejoong can do tough pretty good, despite his pretty boy face. Didn't we have a pretty boy western 'hero'? Oh, wait. He was Billy the Kid. Pretty boy, tough attitude. I think Jaejoong can do this role if he is ever offered it. :-)
