First teaser for brotherly melodrama Triangle
by girlfriday
MBC’s next Monday-Tuesday drama Triangle is just two weeks out from its premiere, and has released the first teaser. The melodrama stars Lee Beom-soo (Prime Minister and I), Kim Jaejoong (Dr. Jin), and Im Shi-wan (The Attorney) as three brothers who are separated as children and grow up living as poetically opposing lives as possible. Because their pain is our gain?
The trailer just introduces the three brothers as we already know them, based on character descriptions: eldest hyung Lee Beom-soo as the hot-headed detective, middle brother Jaejoong as a street thug and rising mobster, and youngest Im Shi-wan as an adopted chaebol heir. They don’t know about each other and grow up with different names, and then reunite after twenty years apart. Cue birth secret times three, and all hell breaks loose for all parties involved.
Between the first two brothers we’ve obviously got the law as a source of conflict, and between the youngest brothers we’ve got a woman (Baek Jin-hee, Empress Ki) who’s loved by both. Basically, Middle Bro will have lots of drama everywhere he goes. Poor Middle Bro.
It’s too early to tell if the show will pull off the epic feel it’s going for, but I like the setup of the three brothers and their destined reunion. A lot will depend on brotherly chemistry, because I can see this being a heartwrenching story if done right.
Triangle premieres May 5.

Yes. Their pains are our gain.
Lee Beom Soo looks very young (than the way he looks in Prime Minister) in the teaser though. Maybe it's the outfit. And the hairstyle.

Good lord! Has Lee Bum Soo discovered the fountain of youth? Or is he Benjamin Button? How is it that he looks younger than ever?
When I read about the casting of this and the age gaps I thought, "well yeah... I know families can stretch out births... (I'm 14 years older than my youngest brother) but *these* guys?" They've made it work in the trailer!

I'd make wisecracks about this being another shuffle of the melodrama deck, except that this could easily be a movie from the 1930s, with Humphrey Bogart as the mob brother, John Garfield as the District Attorney brother, and Pat O'Brien as the brother who became a priest and witnesses as the inevitable tragedy plays out to the dramatic end. It's a classic.

There's so much man-pain in dramas this spring, might as well have a three-for-one here.
I have seen too little of the writer and PDs, so I can't say I am filled with confidence, but if the chemistry works and they use their cast and the brotherly connection well, it could be a solid melodrama.
And if not, we can hope for toplessness. We have to find something to hold on to here.

You're right about so much man-pain this spring, doctor men, big men, three men, police men, forgetting man, and dark men.

This was such a wonderful comment I had to tweet it. Ahaha. Yep, all kinds of man-pain. Different character, ages, styles, male angst and man-tears for everyone!
'Triangle' seems eager to cater to many at the same time, so we get triple the pain here. And in romance-, family- and work-pain form.

Haha, thank you!
The dramas this season make a perfect man-pain menu for everyone's liking. But it's a little bit overwhelming, so I'm glad that there are cable shows that can provide some balance.
Well, since ‘Triangle’ is about three men, they got to have varietttty. Hence, triple the men, triple the pain.

Yes! Jae's got tattoos all over. Looks like they did a good job covering the AKTF one on his left chest with makeup. I thought I saw another pic where they kept the butterfly on his right shoulder. In SKK Scandal, they had to cover Yoochun's chest tattoo with makeup in one of the scenes. I'm wondering what they're going to do with the big one on his back! And he's got a long one down his spine. I'm hoping we get to see more of Jae's tats!

But why cover them up if he's playing a thug/mobster? Are his real tattoos too well-mannered..?

They probably are way too personal for the character. I mean the ones on his back are very specific.

@Feli You're right. It would be hilarious they didn't cover up his back tattoo cuz then his character would be a thug who's a dbsk fan.

The premise sounds so familiar to a bollywood movie Amar, Akbar, Anthony. Man, that was one movie with lots of man pain. And after watching the trailer the premise looks so similar.

SERIOUSLY? What is with all the people who say this sounds similar to AAA? The Amar Akbar Anthony I watched and lvoed was a movie with lots of comedy and happy endings for all three bothers as it preached its message of religious tolerance. Apart from the basic setup of three brothers adopted out then finding each other, there's very little the same here - the chances of anyone of them popping out of an Easter egg are slim, the chances of all three having happy endings seem about zero, or significantly less than that.

This series is just similar to AAA, I did not say it has no character of it's own because I am certain it will. But it will be hilarious to imagine Jaejoong pull off a whole popping out of an oversized egg thing! =P

Hmmm. I was thinking more along the lines of waqt. The one that was released in the 60s. The elder brother is a jewel thief. The middle brother, brought up by a rich family, turns out to be a lawyer and the youngest a teacher or something. Again there's a girl the thief and lawyer both love.
A murder brings them together where the lawyer defends the thief while the youngest brother acts as a witness (paid) against him.
That was one great movie.

The lady singing in party is: Aage Bhi Jaane Na Tu

BTW, it is a mesh of Amar, Akhbar, Antony and Waqt with Korean melodrama touch. Interesting...

Waqt is an AWESOME movie, really hard to find on DVD at the moment for some reason. I often sing Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen to my wife, it's lyrics fit nicely for me. Of course, the big difference here is a 24-episode Drama full of pain and suffering, with likely no happy endings for anyone, versus a 2.5-3 hour film.

At first I thought Im Shi-wan would be another pretty face +lacking acting skills. But he is improving a lot.
Also gets lots of different roles, I like that.
He played rightful and pure guy in Moon Sun, he played psycho guy in Equator man, here he'll play rich backstabbing guy... and I like what I see already.
Jaejoong... I still have to see the character rather than the actor playing the character.

I agree with the above 2 comments by oddfurball and Aoiaheen. The premise sounds too dramatic like some Bollywood Masala film with a Korean twist! LOL.... Bollywood has been stealing some Korean ideas and recently I do see some exchanges from S.Korea with this and Song Hye Gyo's new film... there were more...I don't remember now...
Korean dramas/ makjang are dramatic too (terminal illness, cruel step siblings, cruel mothers, chaebol love story, etc) but this is way more dramatic so it will be interesting to see how things catch up.

Ok, so I am SERIOUSLY Jaejoong biased, but I wish they'd made him eat a few sandwiches before going shirtless. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't say no under any circumstances, but .....

Yep. He's looked more muscular than this before, but he doesn't look unhealthy. Not at all. Jaejoong has always have a slim frame. That's natural for him, it just seems like he is more comfortable with a smaller muscles now. Which still look good on him :)

Seriously, all this whining about Jaejoong being too skinny is annoying. Instead of forever pining over Jaejoong's buffed body from the Mirotic era (2008), fangirls should just check out photos of young Jaejoong . The man is born with a very slim frame. Instead of crying a river about his "unhealthy" body, just honestly accept that perhaps he is not as into pumping iron anymore.

If they want to make the brothers believable, they should look for similar looking actors. Like Kim Jae Won - Lee Jong Suk or Ji Sung - Seo Kang Joon.
Oh well, they're 2 weeks away from premiere.
Lee Bum Soo looks younger than in PMAI. How is that even possible?

Ah the perils of transliteration - it's Baaraat (बारात) of course, not Bharat (भरत), but yes the basic plot has MUCH more in common with Triangle than does Amar Akbar Anthony. Of course, it still seems a bit silly to me for people to keep going on about how much like ANY movie a 24-episode Drama is.
There are famously few basic plots out there anyway, and the separated siblings trope is an ancient and widespread one.
By the time anyone's sat through 24 hours of pain in this Drama, I suspect comparisons to classic Hindi films will be the last thing on their minds Thanks for reminding me that I should watch यादों की बारात, if only for a baby Aamir Khan! :)

If the premise is similar and then it is similar...What's silly about comparing the base storyline of a 24 hrs drama vs 2 hrs drama. One can build a story/ film/ drama from a simple 10 lines synopsis. They might have been influence or not...who knows. The world is a small place now. Also it is similar to many Hindi Masala films where siblings are separated in birth/ Mela which is made into spoofs over and over again.
Korean dramas also has siblings separated ones (Ex. Autumns in my heart)... I did watch few others too but none of them sounded very similar to Hindi ones like this one... There is nothing silly about it.
