Sung Dong-il cast as Gong Hyo-jin’s first love
by girlfriday
That…seems wrong, right? But that’s apparently the next role for dramaland’s favorite dad Sung Dong-il (Answer Me 1994), who has signed on to join Noh Hee-kyung’s new drama It’s Okay, It’s Love. The role is a bit outside his usual dad-coach-gangster wheelhouse: he’ll be playing Gong Hyo-jin’s first love, that is if she signs on to headline along with Jo In-sung.
The new romantic melodrama is the latest from writer Noh Hee-kyung and PD Kim Kyu-tae of That Winter, The Wind Blows and Padam Padam, among others. It’s slated for SBS’s Wednesday-Thursday timeslot in July, and is still waiting for the leads to confirm. Meanwhile idol D.O. of Exo has been cast in a supporting role.
The drama will be about psychology, and contemporary people who nurse the smallest of physical ailments but leave their emotional scars untreated. The heroine is a first-year fellow in psychiatry, and the hero is a mystery novel writer and radio DJ who suffers from OCD.
Sung Dong-il will play a psychiatrist whose wife and son live abroad in the States. He believes firmly that a patient’s will is more important than any doctor’s ability, and is a fastidious character who is resolute when it comes to his charges; he’s also the heroine’s first love. I’m already hoping it’s a one-sided sunbae crush or something. Don’t be a cheater, appa!
It’s Okay, It’s Love follows You’re All Surrounded in July.

This could definitely interesting. I love psychological dramas although I have my doubts because the writer is the same writers as The Wind bla bla bla...
Btw, the writer really likes Jo In Sung huh? I hope he's Gong Hyo Jin's love interest and not sung dong-il. I want Sung Dong-Il as the main lead because he's such a talented actor and I'm a fan of his but not as Gong Hyo Jin's lover. I think the role is perfect for him though, he can definitely give a fantastic performance.

Additional comments: I said Sung Dong-il's going to give a fantastic performance because when I saw him in Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love (yep, the drama went downhill and was disappointing) I thought that I never would have imagine that this guy whom I've only seen playing funny characters most of the time can turn into this great complex villain. He was so awesome in that and he gave me a pleasant surprise. He definitely is an actor with lots of potential and sadly, he is quite underrated (like any other great actors out there who are underrated too).

People often use underrated/overrated w/ how popular an actor/actress is or how big of a star they are.
There are many talented actors who primarily play character roles and are appreciated for their talents.

I like the writer because she brings in a great balance of noir and...creativity to dramas. I loved Padam and The Wind, but I think the endings of both dramas were poor. I'm excited for the cast. I am usually averse to dramas with leads who are as big as Jo In Sung, Song Hye Kyo lala but, they deliver.

Yes, Noh Hee Kyung really likes Jo In Sung, she praised Jo In Sung many time and she creats this character for Jo In Sung.
Friend, That Winter The Wind Blows is the only drama of Noh Hee Kyung that she is successful at rating, a korean columnist talking about this.
plus Song Hye Kyo and Jo In Sung got praised by korean critics and were nominated for Daesang award at Apan star awards (along with Lee Bo Young and Go Soo and Song Hye Kyo earned this award) This awards is very good one and most believable award in Korea nowaday.

It doesn't seem wrong to me. Those two people could very well date in real life and it wouldn't be at all wrong, were they both consenting single and non-immediately related adults.
It seems unusual, for a medium where only people of the same age and looks are deemed worthy enough to have romance and where anyone outside of those "perfect" pairings is seen as odd. But wrong? Nope. Not for anyone who is aware that dramas are not real.
What I mean is, just because we don't find someone swoon-worthy or because we feel they don't look pretty and matching with someone else does not make a pairing itself "wrong". The day I see someone like him as a lead in a romance is the day I can say dramas are finally staring to give a damn about representation and realism.
The drama does not sound like something I want to watch and since his character is married, I also hope they don't show any current interest between the two in an attempt to sully the notion, but I dig that they are going for this unusual in dramas ex-pairing. It's something. It's a step. One step at a time.

I meant a guy like Sung Dong Il. The actor, not the character. When we see more cases of people not within the "hot" category, by what dramafans mostly consider hot, actually given a romance.
When romances not involving "perfect" pairings are explored by the medium and when the age gap is not part of the premise, as if it's what defines the relationship. When this is seen as just another relationship, not an age gap and ugly/pretty pairing.
But that goes for entertainment in general. Most Hollywood romances are also among pretty people only. I doubt Korean drama will be the first industry to go there. :P

That Winter which starred Jo In Sung is only her drama that was successful at rating, Worlds Within starred Song Hye Kyo and Hyun Bin received rating only 6%
Both Song Hye Kyo and Jo In Sung got praised by korean critics and were nominated for grand prize (plus Lee Bo Young and Go Soo) at Apan star awards, a most believable award in Korea nowaday ( check it)
If you won't watch it,it's your right, we all have different preference but the ones who will impact on rating are people in Korea who love both Jo In Sung and Gong Hyo Jin.

I have no problem at all with the age gap, and am a big fan of Sung Dong Il, but have my own reasons for hoping that this is a one-sided crush. For clarity's sake the "he" in my comments refers to the character, not the actor
First, I am not a fan of infidelity, and so hope that if he is married with a child the crush is not returned.
Second, even if he weren't married, I find something a little off about teacher/student relationships, especially in a field like psychiatry. I'm not saying this disquiet is entirely rational, it's a subjective reaction, but while students having a crush on their teachers is completely routine, the return of those feelings always makes me uncomfortable. So if I were to watch this, I'd be hoping that he wasn't like that.
However the character is written, though, I am very sure that Dong Il would completely ace his portrayal. It's not his job to give us characters we can like and sympathise with, it's his job to show us the character the writers have created. And he's VERY good at his job.

I'm with you on the teacher - student relationships, as well as the infidelity.
I also hope this will be a one-sided love, but if it is - as I suspect it will be - than I think this is an excellent idea, for a reason that nobody has mentioned yet: Because it will make things harder for Jo In-sung's character, in terms of getting the girl.
JIS's character is fit and gorgeous, but the heroine is clearly looking for intelligence and character rather than superficial good looks. This means the male lead will have to convince her he is worthy through showing intelligence and character... and I like that a lot, particularly if the man is used to coasting by on good looks with women.
It'd be cool if he expected to dazzle her with the pretty, and be left floundering and unsure of what to do when she is totally unimpressed. *g*

Sung Dong Il is always good in his roles, some of my favorites being appa from the reply series (where he's playing goofy dad), but he was also quite compelling in jang ok jang (in which he got the excellence Award, Actor in a Drama Special for; he beat out Yoo Ah In in the same category) at 2013 SBS awards. The man is recognized as being a good actor.

FWIW I think "goofy dad" is perhaps a little bit of an under-sell as a summary of his roles in the Answer Me franchise.
I'm only seven months younger than he is, and have been married about as long as the parents in those two Dramas, and I find their portrayal of an older, long-time married couple very realistic. Obviously it's tweaked for humour quite a lot, but the cancer episode in 97, the death anniversary episode and the pregnancy episode in 94, and their overall interactions, all seemed very authentic to me, in a "been there, done that" kind of way. When I watched him and Il Hwa bickering and fighting and laughing and loving, I always thought, "yep, that's us" even when their antics were overstated for comic effect.

I happen to love Sung Dong-il (one of my fave ahjussi actors) so I don't find the prospect of him being (potentially) Gong Hyo-jin's first love gross or icky at all. I do think it'll be a one-sided unrequited sunbae crush (I agree, don't be cheatin on your wife and kid~) but seeing as though this is dealing with psychology...just maybe them being lovers might be a wrench thrown into the storyline. I do hope not though...don't make it all crazy on us, please :)

Hello everyone, first time commentor here! So excuse excuse my lack of kdrama knowledge as I haven't watched alot of kdramas.
From what I've seen so far Dong-il's acting is superb. However for some reason, I can see him either being quiet hilarious, or pretty enlightening in his character.
Either way he will definitely do a good job, and I'm sure Gong Hyo-jin will be able to match it.
This odd pairing has actually made me quite excited for the drama haha

That'd be kinda cute! First love could mean a number of things. It could mean she was in love with him when she was much younger or it could have been a crush in high school. Could happen! I remember really liking a guy 10 years older than me when I was 10. He was close to the family at the time, I would follow him everywhere, ahah. The way it's told now, it does seem like a past thing (hopefully one-sided). But it'd be interesting if it was not as well (a past thing, I mean).
I hope both Gong Hyo Jin and Jo In Sung sign on as I enjoy both of them a lot! I really like Noh Hee Kyung's writing as well. That Winter was not her best but Padam, Padam is still a favorite of mine and I still think about it even though it's been long over. There are not many writers I get excited about, but I do get excited for her.

Wait, so ladies can like older men in kdramaland and not just younger ones?!? Shocking stuff, you guys.
I think the premise is interesting but I'm not really sold on this show. I wish Noh would get her mojo back and start writing like she used to, because she used to write such insightful and touching shows. But I found That Winter so disappointing :/ Although saying this, I would totally watch this if Gong Hyo Jin signed on. She is so unfailingly charming and wonderful, I love her so much. (I wish they would cast someone else and not Jo In Sung, but I guess we can't have everything).

LOL Why they would cast someone else? Noh Hee Kyung creats this OCD character for Jo In Sung.
I like both Jo In Sung and Gong Hyo Jin but I noticed many time some Gong Hyo Jin fans were too much. I have never seen Jo In Sung fans saying smth like" I hope they would cast another female lead" here though I know some of them don't like Gong Hyo Jin.
I watched all Noh Hee Kyung dramas before but I sill liked That Winter The Wind blows.
If you found That Winter was so disappointing, I don't mind becase we all have different preferences but this drama which starred Jo In Sung is the only one that Noh Hee Kyung is sucessful at rating and Song Hye Kyo and Jo In Sung (plus Lee Bo Young, Go Soo) were nominated for Daesang award at Apan Star Awards, the very good award (You can check why this one is so very good award) while your Gong Hyo Jin wasn't.

I do agree... those ahjusshi's are so baby faced they can still say they are around the early 30's age bracket... and everyone would just agree hands down...
and people harping on about age and SDI looking old is just funny. I know its subjective opinion but still GHJ and SDI has 13 years age difference is the same as Lee Yeon hee and Lee Sun gyun 13 years age difference. and looked how awesome that chemistry turned out to be...
And dramas with big age difference between leads always start a little weird like Prime minister & I (Yoona and Lee BumSoo ha 20 years difference) as well as Dating cyrano (Lee JungHyuk and sooyoung had 16 years difference), but I think they made it work with good acting and good chemistry... especially from LBS and LJH. I am sure SDI can work it!

13 years is not unusual btwn a male and female lead and while LYH and LSG had great chemistry (better than btwn JJH and KSH - which I don't really see), it was a stretch for the 2 to have been schoolmates 3 years apart, as LSG has gotten older since his "Coffee Prince" days.
But otherwise, LSG fit the role perfectly well.

First became a fan after watching him in 1n2d and after that i was blown away bit by bit. and now I am such a fan of his...
I am so happy that he is now given these roles rather than his usual appa role...!!!
I am sure he is gonna blow this one out of the park!He is one of those actors that just carry a great deal of stage presence even in such a small amount of time... but he is really having such busy schedule this past few year, more so now I think...
As far as i know he is also in the cable drama Gapdong, where he is one of the leads there... then he was in the Movie Miss Granny which was such a box office hit, he is cameod in the movie Elegant Lies as Kim hee Ae's first love and he will also star in Ha Jung woo's second directorial walk in Chronicles of a Blood Merchant... and of course he is in Dad where are you going...

eek. Hopefully it's going to be a one-way crush from ghj's character's point. First, I don't like infidelity nor teacher-student thing in which the teacher likes the student (maybe it's because I just watched the episode of 'Ghost seeing detective Cheo yong' that had a school teacher sexually harass the students in his school). And thirdly, after watching SDI with his kids in 'Appa, Where are we going,' I can't get the image of SDI being Joon, Bin and Yuel's dad out of my head. And especially since I see a lot of my own dad in SDI, and especially with SDI's character in the 'Reply's, the gruff but sweet dad.
not that i don't think SDI is not good looking or charismatic enough to be a love interest... you all should look at pictures of SDI when he was younger...he's pretty good looking: http://onehallyu.com/index.php?/topic/35828-when-reply-1994-njs-parents-were-young/

I HAVE A QUESTION! Please make comments & answer!:)
WHY some commentators here say that "That Winter The Wind Blows" is disappointing??
"Song Hye Kyo" has won Daesang award in "APAN star awards" for her role & it is a HIT DRAMA!
If you think that the drama is full of intense feelings & emotions,U should know that genre of the drama is "Melodrama"! A melodrama should be about intense emotions!
ABOVE ALL "Song Hye Kyo" has acted BRILLIANTLY!
although Her character is s.o who is stubborn, selfish & doesn't ask for help, you won't find her uninteresting. Her character is MUCH BETTER than those "Pushover, weak, insecure, depressing" female characters in other K-dramas!!
