Secret Love Affair’s leads cozy up for press conference

How cute. Kim Hee-ae and Yoo Ah-in’s new noona romance promises to be all kinds of scandalous, but their real-life chemistry is more like adorable noona-dongseng trying not to make each other laugh. Why is the awkwardness in the do-a-sexy-pose-for-the-camera moment so endearing? The cast of JTBC’s new Monday-Tuesday drama Secret Love Affair gathered for the show’s press conference, where they discussed kisses, skinship, and overcoming bashfulness.

The new drama from the team behind A Wife’s Credentials features a steamy affair between a married woman in her forties and a twentysomething piano prodigy who also happens to be her husband’s student. Eep. They really weren’t underplaying the scandal part. She’s a woman who has a seemingly perfect life, ripped from the pages of a magazine. But she’ll fall for the pianist whose talent is still undiscovered, and find herself at a crossroads between the affair and the picture-perfect life she doesn’t want to lose.

Yoo Ah-in, on skinship: “We already shot a kiss scene. I’ve left my heart wide open. I’m sure Kim Hee-ae sunbaenim feels uncomfortable around me too, but we’re leaving ourselves open to the idea, ‘So what, we can do that.’ We have the desire to overcome the awkwardness and be natural.”

About his co-star, he added: “Kim Hee-ae sunbaenim’s charm is her honesty and frankness. You just automatically fall in love with her.” Kim Hee-ae in turn said, “If you see the drama you’ll understand the reason you can’t help but fall for [Yoo Ah-in’s character]. I haven’t looked at someone younger than me and seen him as a man before, but the more I look at him my standards go up. Yoo Ah-in has cute and sexy sides.”

And when asked how far the romance will go, Yoo Ah-in replied, “I don’t know what the writer has planned, but I’ll go all the way (Laughs).” Pwaha, I’m a fan of the saucy press conference for the saucy drama. The show seems heavy on the melo so I’m not sure it’ll be my cup of tea, but I’m just happy that Kim Hee-ae is getting all this noona love. Rawr.

Secret Love Affair premieres March 17.

Just discovered Yoo Ah in in Sungunkwyan Scandal, and it was his charisma and his character that was more powerful than the leads themselves. So can't wait for this, this definitely reminds me of two American movies Unfaithful - by Richard Gere and Diane Lane or A Perfect Murder by Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow.

And I think this melodrama could go for both endings once her affair is discovered. So can't wait for this drama :)

Agree!! The bad boy who is actually a softie at heart in Sungunkwyan Scandal. Unlike other shows where one fast-forward the scene where the main leads don't appear, I can never fast forward when he is onscreen. Unfortunately, I have not been able to watch the other shows he is in because the stories are too ridiculous. (Cough cough Fashion King)

The acting was pretty solid, but really, the writing went haywire at the second half I was just fast forwarding. Stuck around for Yoo Ah In only.

I'm not watching this for a few reasons, not the least of which is that I find the age difference kind of icky. If the roles were reversed and it was an older man with a younger woman, I would still feel the same. It just feels wrong. Also, I'm not a fan of either lead actor.

Love Has No Age

I am all for love has no age with some of my fave kdrama stories in noona-songsaeng territories but I am also with Abbie, I too will most likely pass this one... mainly because she is married... she is right, married to the other guy?

Though I am getting the feeling the hubby will be douchebag with affairs of his own and thus that would somehow equate to this secret love affair being okay, romantic and all other description known to man to make it all fair.. but still every single one is still lame in my books cause affair is still an affair...

And I am also geting the feeling that they are gonna have her divorced by the end of this drama or in the processes of divorcing cause their secret affair is all about love... which is whatever. Divorce or separation first before trying another relationship!

Finally, a candid remark on the noona romance. And a brave one, too, against the super majority in this forum.

When it comes to dating and coupling, I am all for any lawful combinations and permutations of age, gender, prior marital experience, nationality, culture and socio-economic background. So long as it happens organically and without agenda. And, in dramalands, as long as it makes compelling story and great entertainment.

But, like Abbie, I, too, draw a line at pederasty (of either gender) or what smacks of it.

There are many people here who feel the same as you two. Also, I believe pederasty is a term exclusively used for gay sexual relations between an older man and (post-pubescent) boy so it's probably not the term you want to use.

Just a reminder that the man is in his 20s and therefore an adult. I get having issues with the female character being married (although one cannot say the series condones cheating, since we do not know how it will be handled on a moral level), but saying this is pederasty is inaccurate.

Both if we look at the word as what it mostly means in English, which is homoerotic pedophilia, and what it means in modern Greek, which is pedophilia (unrelated to sex and gender).

I agree the relationship should be adult and consensual if romanticized in fiction (some of the same people who mind age gaps would not bat an eyelid to wrist grabbing and forced kisses, mind you) and I also believe people need to use words more carefully when they dislike something which is otherwise not unrealistic or deserving of chastising.

Just because someone is older she is not "his mom" and their relationship is not "icky". That is offensive to all people who date outside of their age and not something third parties have the right to judge or call morally indecent based on their own personal preferences.

Not everyone's cup of tea in fiction? Fine. 'Pederasty' or 'wrong'? No.

I fail to see how a relationship between a man in his twenties and a much older woman, could possibly smack of an adolescent boy and older man. If you really are for 'any lawful combinations and permutations of age, gender, prior marital experience, nationality, culture and socio-economic background', then as per your own words, the age gap shouldn't bother you (her marital status is a separate issue, and that I can understand having issues with)

I'm not the hugest fan of large age gaps between leads either, but this is explicitly part of the premise and frankly, it's not as if leads who are close in age always make for organic and compelling entertainment either - Heirs should have taught us all that much.

There are a few things that I will not watch or stopped watching when I realized the age of the two characters or of the actors themselves. Everyone is different. Mid teens matched with twenty year olds does not work - this was the set-up for My Little Bride. That was not endearing to meta t all but rather had a pretty good squik factor. I was hoping I imagined the ages wrong, but I don't think so. There is a current show with a 16 year old actor (born 1997) matched to a 24 year old actress (born 1990). Again, if this was not a romance plot, I would have been fine. However, they had a pretty good kiss scene and that was it for me. I am not even sure how the heck that was allowed - he is a minor. If he was 18, well at least he is not a minor in my country. Also, so many adult actors/actresses share only a quick peck I had a hard time trying to make sense of this.

If Yoo Ah-In's character in 22 and above, then, well he is an adult who can hook up with whomever he wants.

Well, that's how I feel about it, at least.

It depends on a lot of things - in the 1990er/1997er pairing you mentioned above, the 1997'er is playing a 24 year old, ie the same age as his older costar.

I'm not super comfortable with the kiss either, but it's not illegal - and on a moral level, I'm rather more horrified by one of his previous dramas having a rape scene where the victim was a 13 year old, and played by an actor that age (and it's clearly shown that our boy's character was an eyewitness to it) After that, a kiss scene seems like a walk in the park.

I'm afraid I may have offended some people with my earlier statement. That was not my intent, and if I have done so, then allow me to say this: I'm very sorry.

Now, what I said I will continue to stand by, for that is my opinion. In this day and age, a relationship between two people, in fiction or reality, where there is more than a ten year age difference, seems ridiculous and strange to me. Unless, of course, the people involved are both consenting adults who love each other. Then, have at it! But that will not shake my opinion.

Let me pose a question: If you saw a fifty year old man with a twenty-five year old woman, would you judge them both? Would you wonder what she sees in him, and him in her? Would you question if their love is true and not based on basic sexual attraction or even money? I would, and do.

As I said, too, if the roles were reversed, and it was a fifty year old woman and a twenty-five year old man, I would also wonder about it. In this case, Kim Hee-ae is, I believe, forty-six, and Yoo Ah-in is 27. Not so great a difference as 25 years, but close enough. Their age difference is one year less than my own age of twenty. With a near twenty year age gap, how can I not find it unsettling and "icky"?

I am not ashamed of my views, nor what anyone says will make me feel shame. I am only sorry that I have caused possible offense or indignation in others. I apologize, most sincerely.

I just read this after posting my reply and wanted to assure you I wasn't offended by your views. They made me think -- because I would have a different take if the genders were reversed.

(I strongly suspect the age-gap has been written as this deliberately wide in order to raise eyebrows. I'm hoping to also explore gender dynamics... *rubs hands together in eager anticipation* ...but we shall see when the drama actually airs.)

Honestly, I think most of the offense came from Lord Byron's incorrect use of the word "pederasty" -- which implies child rape -- which is an offensive way to describe this relationship, in my opinion. (And would be if the genders were reversed... though from what I can tell, "pederasty" is reserved for adolescent boys. Probably because having sex with adolescent girls back in the day was just the norm and didn't need a special word.)

"If you saw a fifty year old man with a twenty-five year old woman, would you judge them both? Would you wonder what she sees in him, and him in her? Would you question if their love is true and not based on basic sexual attraction or even money? I would, and do. "

Your question is loaded. If the man and woman in your example ~truly~ love each other or not is not our place to judge them. They're both adults, and if there's free consent from both parts, well, then, let's let them be happy.

Whether they're together for love or money is something you can wonder regardless of gender or age - people of the same age can be together for ulterior motives, or "basic sexual attraction" too. I would be more curious about the gender dynamics or power imbalance, but it is not my right to judge them anyway, because once again, they're adults who have their own private reasons for this.

(I'm always referring to established couples, or the possibility of developing one.)

I, for one, am excited for this drama. I loved A Wife's Credentials with all my soul, so I trust this team will give us a haunting story that will not be as simple as choosing an OTP and following a standard trajectory of ~wuv.

I wouldn't worry. I don't think you caused any offense at all. It's a common opinion that many people have (many here on DB have as well) and it's important to know/see all view points. It was mostly in Lord Byron's comment where he labeled the relationship "pederasty" is where I thought "whoa, too far!"--not to mention it's just the wrong use of the word.

To me, this type of relationship isn't icky or anything close if the two involved are both consenting adults because I believe you're both old enough and mature enough to know what you want and what you are doing and there is really no need for me to weigh in. I do however believe it's more difficult to feel this way if one party is a teen but that is a whole other issue. I like the idea of this drama because it seems to want to show this in a more serious light--not as a light rom-com sort of way in which it is usually shown--and because it is very much an adult relationship even if the age gap is rather big. As for your question--I would have to agree with azurduyy.

Wasn't there a similar relationship in A Gentleman's Dignity? Between Choi Yoon and Me Ah Ri (was the age gap closer or about the same)? But, it never really dove into the issue much. Plus, I feel there is a shift in opinion for some when the roles are reversed. Suddenly when a woman is older, it's weird or predatory or she is a cougar. But, that is not always the case and I like that there is a drama willing to explore a relationship with those kind of opinions stacked against it. And two odds to overcome, to boot. To me, the trailer seals the deal--both seem to care deeply for one another but they also don't seem to know what to do about it. It's not like they're happily in the throws of love and I want to know what they do, lol.

Abbie - I'm not offended by your stating your opinion, don't get any of us wrong.

I actually agree with parts of your sentiment, but your blanket statement dismissing ALL relationships with age gaps, in truth or fiction, as 'strange' does betray your age to a certain degree. And as with any scene in life or fiction, there are nuances to it (I strongly disapprove of much older men going after barely legal girls, but the scenario is different when one party is in, say, their thirties and the other in their fifties or even sixities. Or twenties and forties)

Abbie,

I think you are well entitled to your opinion and I can see where you are coming from, but I respectfully disagree with you.

It seems to me that you have a narrow minded view on relationships with regards to age. A possible lack of true love and a solely basic sexual attraction can be found in all relationships. A 25 year old man/woman relationship could just as easily have the same issues; rather than age, what matters most is the individual and their actions.

On the flip side, there may be advantages to a 50 year old man; maturity, possibly wiser, worldly, more mentally secure, genuinely has his act together and could offer a mature relationship that a 25 year old craves for that she may not necessarily get from guys her age range.

Rather than make judgments on people based on age, I would urge you to be a little more open minded and give people the benefit of the doubt they deserve by judging them based on their actions.

That is not to say that age difference may not be bad for a relationship but rather realize that it depends on the people involved.

You may choose to stand by your opinion, but I think its unfair of you to lump all those types of relationships into something ‘ unsettling and icky’ for people that are in beautiful, loving relationships with a huge age gap.

e.g it can be as cute and entertaining Lee Bum Soo and Yoona in PMW or as dark as Lee Dong Wook and Oh Yeon-Soo in La Dolce Vita or as sexually charged as Big Bang's T.O.P photo shoot with Lee Mi Suk.... it depends on the people involved; there can be love, darkness or sexual chemistry......

It's interesting because for me, if the genders were reversed I'd share the "just feels wrong" sentiment. (Though I'm always open to having my mind changed if the story is good enough -- which has happened before.) But with the woman being the older one here... I like it. :)

It shakes up the usual power-dynamic. And she's old enough and, apparently, self-aware enough that the power-dynamic won't be undermined by his being a wiser, guiding force in her life. (Which has been the usual for the noona romances I've seen.) So the power shift will be genuine. Which I'm really, really looking forward to seeing!

It no doubt helps that I do like both leads and the creative team behind them -- so I'm coming in with a massive amount of built in faith.

It also helps that I don't see Yoo Ah-in as an adolescent boy (unlike Lord Byron) so I'm not seeing this as a predatory relationship at all.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to this drama! :D

Yes, the power dynamic is what is interesting in this case. Cause even in INR3, where the male lead is supposed to be the "dongsaeng", that show clearly showed that the noona is the one who needs the guiding and completely and utterly lost. So…in that case, there's no change in power dynamic in terms of kdrama land. Will be interesting to see if this show would be different, and hoping it will.

Abbie-
I am not piling on, but sort of agreeing.

What you call icky and that "it feels wrong" is EXACTLY what it supposed to do. They never present these love stories with a large age difference between the OTP as normal. It is always questioned, discussed, accused of wrongness.

The wrongness is what thrills us - it makes us wonder, "What would happen if I did that?" "Would I ever have the nerve to do that, too?" "What if I really loved him and he just happened to be 25?"

Exploring all those ideas and feelings makes it dramatic, and therefore fun to watch.

Which I will be doing for sure.

I don't quite find the age difference icky (it happens way too often in real life so there's honestly nothing weird or disgusting about it). But I do find the premise rather controversial. I initially thought Hee-ae's character wasn't married. But having an affair with your husband's student is not only scandalous but also an act of adultery.

I absolutely have no problems watching the drama but I can't possibly ship them when I know it's so morally wrong. And if 'perfect life' is any indication, it seems her husband isn't a abusive son of a bitch. So that makes it even harder. Of course, it's no less intriguing so I'll tune in just for that. And the chemistry. There's tons and more of it.

Required fields are marked *

"Picture perfect" doesn't preclude abuse. It's usually those with picture perfect lives that have a whole lot of ugliness going on underneath. But... I have no idea how the show will actually swing the marriage.

(Going by their previous work, I'm assuming all is not what it seems with the marriage, but that's a guess on my part.)

0
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

Sure it doesn't, but abuse is probably the only reason I'd be alright with someone cheating on their other half... if even. If one isn't happy with a marriage, then the solution is simply divorce. Truth be told, there's no passable reason whatsoever to commit adultery because that's selfishly wanting the best of both worlds. Having a saucy affair while still maintaining the perfect life...

I definitely think its too common in real life, and I do appreciate the realism they're (hopefully) going to portray. But it will take a whole lot for me to ship the main leads - is all I'm saying - but I'm surely giving this a try.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I can understand that view. Adultery is usually a turn-off for me as well and certainly not a reason to root for a particular 'ship.

I'm a bit biased here, though, because I've seen and adored "A Wife's Credentials" -- which is from the same creative team (both the writer and the director, I believe?). That drama also dealt with a woman in a "picture perfect" marriage having an affair. And it dealt with it quite intelligently and honestly. So I'm expecting (hoping for!) a similar treatment where the relationship becomes one the viewers support because the story has earned that support in spite of the many reasons to be against it.

But we shall see...

It's truly a testament to Ahn's talent that he managed to wrap up the show in a satisfying way regardless, but I'm still sad that we didn't get to see the show in it's full, 20 episode glory. Still, it's pretty much a masterpiece.

0

Another way of looking at it is, may be we should blame viewers for not watching it. JTBC did its job, presented a good drama, people didn't watch it and they have to balance profitability and content.

I just wish people would give less credence to dramas like Heirs and give dramas like EOW more clout.

0

This is interesting. I looked up some more on the husband character and he's described as "materialistic" so I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say that dude isn't the nicest person...

It was probably one of those "I have a good image. YOU have a good image. Let's get married and have the ULTIMATE good image" marriages.

The show looks good. I don't find the age difference anything to worry about here, since they are both consenting adults. It is the type of thing that will always be controversial and I like that the drama seems to be willing to explore that. I am very interested in how they go about it.

Check out this 21-minute long trailer before you make any pseudo-moral judgement. The director Ahn said in the press conference that he wanted to show the reality as it is. Japan already made this story into a film more than a decade ago. I wonder why Kdrama fandom feels so repulsed at a love story that involves 20 years age difference. If Korean dramaland wants to keep evolving, the fandom needs to be receptive and open-minded as well.

YAI and KHA have sizzling sexual chemistry in the scene where they played the piano together. It's filled with raw sexual desire and tension. Finally, there is a Korean drama that dares to portray mature and real love.

It's not that Kdrama fandom has issues with a 20 year age difference. It has a problem with that age difference with the woman in the senior position. There are plenty of dramas with older men-younger women that don't get folks to bat an eye.

I am fascinated by this story and not from a shipping standpoint though I think both actors are fabulous. What interests me is the power dynamic between these (2) characters. Women can of course, be predatory. We have a 20 yr. age difference as well as a dichotomy in socio-economic status.

How will these factors play out? Will the "Noona" be neutralized like "Shing-Shing" and Si-Yeon? The age gap was not as large, but "Shing-Shing" was emotionally immature/stunted and Sweet Potato saved her from herself and enabled her to be a better human being. Do Manager was a 400+ year old alien, which equalized the age gap btwn actors.

I wonder if the same dynamic will play out in this story. Will this woman conducting an adulterous affair with a man young enough to be her son, have her power killed by the writer in order to give the young lover dominance?

I guess I need to stay tuned...

Most of the dramas around are based on escapism. A lot of viewers watch to escape from reality. Chaebol prince, candy girl, power woman, toyboy alien.

This drama will be based more on exploring the dynamics of relationships and societal norms. Not for the escapists.

see, to me this is escapist. shipping full-on sexually because it's fiction, i won't be bothered by the adultery. actually i'll voyeuristically approve of it because it's forbidden love made even more forbidden, ups the sexual tension.

basically what everyone else says- sick of the infantilising in dramaland.

Ah think I misunderstood your comment with my bad reply. Apologies.
I agree with you, though I'm more for the exploration of the theme, than being keen to see the sexual tension.

Fantastic and sizzling hot teaser. Short but seducing! I always for a story with musical background, plus older woman-younger man relationship. And yes, Girlfriday, they look so cute in the press conference.

I have to say that i cannot understand when people exclude a drama because its about a morally wrong issue, in this case her cheating on her husband. Yes, its wrong but these are things that do happen in real life. So, its great that fixtion takes a real subject matter and hopefully dissect it well.

Its always interesting to explore human nature and what motivates or causes us to go where we know is wrong. We all like tobelieve we will do the 'righ' thing when faced with a moral dilemma but truly, one doesnt know till challenged.

In one warm word, the character said to the girl "do you think relationships only go bad because of bad people?"

The most intriguing drama of all time, I think. Look at the comments above. Before blabbering, watch it first. Just an advice.

I have no problems with the age difference...as long as there's no minor involved. Noona dongsaeng doesn't work most of the time, not because of the age difference...chemistry is there if it's there...but reality soon sinks in,,,the compatibality in thinking and everyday issues are things that crumble it...so for me it's not wrong or sinful...it just takes a whole lot of effort to make it work!

They say you don't need to be together with somebody you have chemistry with. Chemistry alone won't work without compatibility. Reality only merely magnify the differences between 2 lonely individuals and it's up to the individual to bring the incompatibility closer.

I'm looking forward to this drama because the theme is very intriguing and not some kind of fantasy. Sometimes I need a drama that I can relate with real life, like a social issue that I can discuss with the others and think of. This might be an adultery issue (just MIGHT be) which is against the norms. But it happens in real life. I've watched 'A Wife's Credentials' and 'Tokyo Tower'. Both are about woman taking control of themselves instead of being a pretty doll. I'm interested to see how PD Ahn will picture the theme in here.

I'm SOOOOOOO excited for this drama. I love the leads, I love the story, I'm completely ready for this thing to start already.

And Kim Hee Ae is a woman in her late 40s, who is sexy as hell, partly because she's gorgeous, but mostly because she exudes confidence. It does not surprise me that a guy in his 20s (my age) would find her insanely attractive.

What came to my mind is this: if the genders of the main characters were reversed, and we were asked to watch the drama from the men's perspective, I wonder how we'd all feel.

I've walked alongside too many women who were devastated by an adulterous spouse to ever be able to find this topic entertaining. The pain involved is gut wrenching. I just can't get behind a drama that glosses over the emotional carnage.

Having watch dramas by this production team, I can safely say it is highly unlikely the emotional carnage will be glossed over, but dealt with in a realistic manner.

That's good to know. These shows can be great if they deal with the topic thoughtfully.

I really liked Warm Words for that reason. Hope this one is just as good.

But why assume that the drama will do so? It may explore the subject in a much more realistic way!

Good point. I wasn't familiar with the creative team behind this project. The comment was mostly a reaction to the tone of the interview.

Based on that I jumped to the conclusion that the topic would be served-up like they do in Hollywood. They'd typically set up the scenario by making the audience emotionally sympathetic with the wife and student, and unsympathetic to the husband. This, to deaden the viewer's sensitivity to the betrayal and treat the affair like it's no big deal.

After your and Topper's comments, I'm hoping the show will be good. Thanks!

i'm curious what will Ahn PD and writer Jung will deal about this topic. A Wife's Credential is a excellent drama with a sense of realism.

i hope SLA will like that one

I'm kind of surprised with some of the comments up there, but hey, everybody has the right to have an opinion. In MY own opinion, I'm treating dramas as, well, dramas...as in, fictions, not real life, although some of them portray real life as it is, but it is still fiction. And this drama in particular is about a love affair, so as much as I condemn adultery (in real life), I would just treat the (secret) love affair --about the title, is there an affair that is NOT a secret? Haha just wondering -- in this drama as fictional, make believe, and enjoy the story. I hope the writing & directing will be superb, as I have no doubts about KHA & YAI's acting. I just love them. And can I point out one more thing? I luurve YAI's outfit above, makes him look so manly, unlike the outfit he wore in the Oh Snap! post. So looking forward to next week!

What is love? Love is present only in these conditions:

1) a man few years older than a woman
2) a woman few years younger than a man
3) a man with greater earning capability than the woman
4) a man with higher education than a woman
5) a man who's physically stronger than the woman
6) a man who has higher intelligence than than the woman
7) a man who has a stronger character than the woman
8) a man who takes the lead over the woman
9) a man who's taller than the woman
10) a man who looks older than the woman

These are the minimum conditions of love. Any romantic relationships with above conditions not met are icky and suspect.

Yeah, love, indeed. hmmpphh.
