Na PD on grandpas, money, and Seo-jinnie the con artist

Grandpas Over Flowers is gearing up for the premiere of its third trip to Spain this Friday, and the show’s PD Na Young-seok (known more commonly to all as Na PD) has been giving interviews left and right about the new season and the things we can expect from the halbaes and luggage boy Lee Seo-jin. We cherry-picked the best phrases to translate, but they’re pretty much all zingers.

From the mouth of Na PD:

“Luggage boy Lee Seo-jin — he doesn’t even rebel now.”

“A tough journey is uncomfortable? That just makes it memorable.”

“Lee Seo-jin is a genius who doesn’t have to try.”

“He’s been to France, Switzerland, and Taiwan before so he didn’t have to do much preparation. But this time he’s going to a country where he can’t rely on English, so I saw him preparing for the first time. You’ll also see him making mistakes repeatedly out of stress.”

“Recast the luggage boy? Never. Lee Seo-jin is a ‘Wonderful luggage boy'” (a pun on Seo-jin’s Wonderful Season).

“If Teachers Lee Soon-jae and Park Geun-hyung enjoyed the daytime sights of Spain, then Teachers Shin Gu and Baek Il-sub enjoyed nighttime Spain.

“We reduced the allowance money and extended the route.”

“The key point of the show is Lee Seo-jin coming to blows with the production.”

“In order to get more money for the halbaes, he [Seo-jin] came nearly to scam artist levels with the staff.”

“He used his brains a lot to con us of more money for the elders, by any means possible. We producers couldn’t let our guards down for even a moment through the ten days. We tried really hard not to be fooled.”

“You’ll find a new and different aspect of fun in the back-and-forth push-pull game between the staff and Lee Seo-jin from previous trips. Now there’s no need to keep up appearances with each other so everyone let it all out and it turned into ‘babies fighting.’ In an extreme situation, Lee Seo-jin and the production crew crossed over from a push-pull game into an actual tense showdown.”

“Lee Seo-jin really hates to cook. He said this was the first time he’s cooked since France. He really hates cooking and is frightened of it, but [the halbaes] want it so he cooks.”

“I half-jokingly, half-seriously teased Lee Seo-jin the whole time, that we should do a show called ‘King of Cooking Seo-jin.’ A program where every time he cooks it’s a failure.”

“Lee Seo-jin approaches everything with seriousness. He never loses his poker face even in nervous situations. In Spain he was caught by the police while driving a rental car [!!!] but still confronted the situation seriously.”

“Lee Seo-jin and the staff end up in a much fiercer battle than expected. Before we would’ve said things like, ‘You can’t do that,’ but now our exchanges sound more like: ‘What’re you doing! Stop right there! Catch him! That bastard is a thief!’”

Aaaaand below, Na PD flinching when Gu halbae turns into a badass:

I wonder why they think that they can't rely on English in Spain....probably they speak better English there than in France...

That's a tie.

Having lived both in France and Spain, I don't know why Na PD make a fuss about English. Both countries are pretty much no-English zones, except in tourist spots.
English is not required anyway. Otherwise, how would foreigners survive in Korea?

Yeah, I agree with you. As a Spanish myself who has been to France quite a lot, I think that it might be a bit (just a bit!) easier to find English-speaking people in a small-ish French city rather than in a Spanish one, but when it comes to big cities, I would say there's probably almost no difference -- both countries heavily rely on their own languages (and here in Barcelona we have not only Spanish but also Catalan!), unless you go to tourist spots.

Then again, it also depends on who they asked :/ There in Korea one of the most helpful people I talked to in English in a non-tourist spot was a man in their eighties... Young people do learn English, but they were 'afraid' of using it to talk with me.

We'll see soon how they were able to communicate with locals -- if they were able to! :P

Not needed anyway. Foreigners can survive in Korea without ever meeting a functional English-speaker.

Bwahahaha! I just can't wait anymore! My darlings Seo-jinnie and Na PD...why are they so awesome?? That picture of them standing together is making me squee. Love how the variety storyline is being created between the seasons: Seo-jin gets tricked into being luggage boy; then he is placated into being a regular luggage boy with the gift of Sunny; and finally he tries to get the upper hand over Na PD now that he has accepted and thoroughly moved on over being luggage boy.

Yep. He gets back at Seo Jin via the editing room.

NaPD has captured some gem footage, shot while LSJ was distracted. Just wondering 'what have I done?' and 'what will he use?' has to be nerve wracking.

Does anyone know where we can watch this? I've been looking for a long time and can't seem to find any with the complete series, nor one with English subs.

Hulu has the complete first season and the noonas (not sure about Taiwan but maybe!). I watched some of it and while there are SO many ads that get really annoying, at least its quality video and subs

LOL! Poor LSJ, his fault for being young-ish...
They better rely on the English, otherwise it's only Spanish.

Na PD is the master of being "cruel" for the sake of reality tv...or as I remember 1N2D members describing him that way. I think that's why he continues to be successful, and how I'll definitely be viewing his shows 'til he retires!

Aww, poor Seo-jinnie...I'm looking forward to him "suffering" (can't even imagine the traffic stop!!)...but again, this makes for hilarious and interesting TV :) haha. I couldn't tell he hated to cook...maybe in front of the camera, but the way he begrudgingly does it--the man can cook! (Now if only the halbaes can get him hitched...)

The posters (the Barca one and today's Frozen one) are too hilariously done...love it :)

In Spain, if you don't go out at night you are not really knowing the country. Night life in Spain is a must! And it's promoted that way too. Looking forward grandpa's nights

Weird to say but I like that there are old people on korean TV. Seems like everyone on American TV is young - as if no one has grand parents and those grand parents have no lives. Love American tv and cinema just as much as Korean cinema but I thought I'd add my two cents

One of these seasons, swap Seojin and Seunggi. Seojin will at least get a break from cooking and total, complete, entire responsibility (Miyeon & Hee Ae) - and Seunggi will have new challenges.

Oh my. Can you even imagine the amount of dating advice and general nagging that he'd get about settling down? I'd pay good money to watch that season, just to see him squirm.

After a taste of that I bet he'd be begging to get (King of Marriage) Park Geun-hyung and the halbae's back. And Na PD could finally break Seo Jinnie of his rebellious ways.

Re ‘King of Cooking Seo-jin’.
Not sure how to read this. Would the show's concept be:

Lee Seo-Jin, King of Cooking

or

Na PD:
King of Cooking Seo-jin

Have 'em both :):

King of Cooking Lee Seo-jin
(Na PD: Just Cook Seo-jin)
