Kolorful Palette: It’s a bird…it’s a plane…[Sly and Single Again]
by Fanderay
Episode 8 of Sly and Single Again kicked the chemistry up a notch, and it finally feels like our characters are progressing as understanding grows on all sides (as per usual, click the image for full size!).
I admit to not understanding why Superman and Marilyn Monroe would be together (see ya Lois Lane!) but I like it. It feels like the two leads have spent most of this drama apart, or in a group with other people, so it was nice to see them together and being mean to each other in a more flirty way (instead of plotting each other’s demise). Sure, they both put on a show of grumpiness, but I’m pretty sure they both secretly loved their little photo shoot. Seriously though . . . they couldn’t afford a better Superman costume? I guess I shouldn’t complain since it just added to the hilarity of the situation. My husband came into the room while I was drawing and asked incredulously, “Is that an actual scene that happened?” Yes Honey. Welcome to K-dramaland.
I was relieved this episode to see that they finally confirmed Ae-ra’s miscarriage because that really does explain a lot. I’ve been wondering since the first couple episodes if that’s what happened (since a woman collapsing and holding her stomach always means miscarriage on TV) but I was starting to feel crazy since we went so many episodes without learning anything. That being said, I like that Ae-ra was a sympathetic character even without the miscarriage. She’s mostly painted to be the bad guy (and she certainly has her flaws) but I do feel sorry for her past-self. For me, it’s not about who the bread-winner is, but about mutual respect and support. Where was the communication between these two? It seems insane to me that Jung-woo would quit his job and make a huge life-altering decision without even talking to Ae-ra first.
I actually think she would have been behind him 100% if he had discussed it with her first and made her feel like she had a voice, but it would be pretty tough not to end up a little resentful if your husband basically said, “BTW Sweetie, you need to go get multiple part-time jobs tomorrow with no notice or preparation. . . good luck!” When Jung-woo was working as a civil servant, Ae-ra always made him feel appreciated and loved, but I never felt any of that from Jung-woo when she was working. Some small gestures from either of them could have gone a long way towards saving their marriage, but it was like they starting living totally separate lives, and that’s a pretty standard recipe for divorce. Everyone goes through hardship in life, but sometimes hardship isn’t so bad if you go through it together as a team. Their devolution as a couple was pretty unfortunate since they were adorable for a while there.
As far as their present-selves go, I haven’t really been feeling a ton of chemistry, but I’m starting to! I think the issue has been that that Ae-ra was always indignant and Jung-woo acted like some sort of James Bond parody (the Pierce Brosnan version) so it was difficult to see a connection. For quite a few episodes I didn’t even find either of them likable. Jung-woo often does the right thing regarding Ae-ra, but it often seemed like he was doing it just to convince himself that he was the good guy. He genuinely is a pretty good guy, but I find it hard to give someone credit when they have an ego about it. Thankfully both leads have learned to be a little more humble an understanding of each other, and the last few episodes I’ve finally started to feel some genuine mutual attraction between them. That’s a good thing because I’ve mostly been rooting for Seung-hyun so far.
Speaking of Seung-hyun, I was pleasantly surprised to see his feelings thrown out in the open already, and I’m curious to see how that affects his relationship with Ae-ra. I love that she’s savvy enough to get what’s going on and realize that it’s not insignificant. Drama heroines tend to be excruciatingly naive when it comes to the feelings of second leads, and it was so refreshing to watch that car ride home and see Ae-ra’s concern. She’s not only aware, but actually cares, and that definitely made my heart soften up to her a little more. Too bad she doesn’t share Seung-hyun’s feelings and is going to break his heart anyways!
Despite not really feeling the OTP for so many episodes, I’ve actually been enjoying this drama so far, but I’m more excited to see where it’s headed. A lot happened this episode to bring all our characters closer together and it felt like a beginning (hopefully of good things to come!).

Also, the size of the fist looks like he is ready to punch someone out of the screen (like he is getting ready to reach out of the screen to punch someone) :-)

Thank you! I kept looking for comments to see if someone shared my POV, but I found none. I'm sure there are others that agree with me, but it's great that you pointed it out: he really should've discussed such a big life decision with her before acting on it. I think it's a bit silly that she'd be annoyed since he "promised her" she'll never have to work, but I also get where she's coming from.
He's a good guy, but since the start of the drama, I was a little more in her favour. Let's just hope he becomes a little more reasonable and starts seeing things more from her perspective (and vice versa).
I feel like his feelings re-emerged a little too suddenly to make it believable, but then again many parts of this drama aren't believeable, so I'd have to let this slide.
But overall I'm enjoying this drama! Guilty pleasure of the month! I can't wait to see how the next episodes pan out.

I agree he should have had a talk with her before resigning. I think what made her angry wasn't mainly because she had to work, but it is because he did that before asking her. I am sure she would have felt as though her opinion doesn't matter. It would infuriate anyone.
As for his that were re-emerged, I think they weren't settled either. The fact that he made their dream house meant that he was still thinking about her all along, even if it was revenge. When he was interacting with Ae-ra, he was attracted to the same parts of her personality again. If you remember, in the past, he was totally smitten. What I saw was that he was a geek who loved her, and most of all, because he looked up to her for guidance in worldly matters he had no clue of(initially). He trusted her to help him through that, and if you see it that way, you can even see why he was so hurt.
When Ae-ra told him clearly about why she felt betrayed on the roof and she accepted he must have been hurt, and after watching how his father's death affected her, his perspective changed, because he was able to understand what she felt. These were two crucial moments that brought out his feelings to the surface.
I didn't find that sudden, to be honest. On the contrary, I found it well thought out and well written.

If you saw Super Show 4, you would have seen Marilyn Monroe (Sungmin) and Superman (Siwon) together in a Super Junior cosplay. I like the pic.

I'm a bit confused with the talks of 'artwork'. It's pretty obvious you just threw a filter on the image. It's not what I'd call artwork since anyone can do it.

Hmm, I'm not much of an expert on artwork, but I'm pretty sure that's a watercolor sketch...and one that looks almost true to life. Very detailed/nuanced and certainly not something that can be easily replicated, methinks

I don't think you've seen the original picture because you can tell there are slight differences to the original shape of the characters itself. If you look at the episode recap image from episode 8 http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t413/javabeansdb/drama/2014/other/other1/sly8-00041a.jpg
you'll see that the expressions are slightly different and the jaw structure is slightly different. It's incredibly close though, so I think the fact that you confuse it with the original image is a great compliment to the artist.

I'm so glad sb brought this up. I've been wondering all this time:
1. What medium is used to created these images?
2. Why make them look so much like the original photos or screen caps?
3. Since they do, what is the point of the exercise?
4. Isn't art usually about interpretation and/or seeing sth thru the eyes of the artist that makes it different from a photo and from the way others see it?
5. Or is this more like sketching the photo of one's idol or the painting of a family portrait from a photo?
Sorry if these are stupid questions. They are not meant as criticism; it's just that like the others, I don't get it either.

Did you click on the image to view it at full size? Here's a snippet of an early iteration of the drawing to give you an idea of what I'm doing:
http://i630.photobucket.com/albums/uu26/dramabeans/fanderay/SASA/SSL_002.jpg
The software I use is Corel Painter (highly recommended; it's way more fun than Photoshop!) but I do the original pencil drawing on paper and then scan it. Then I block in all the colors before I get into any detail (I do the same thing with real paintings, since getting the right colors is the hardest part).
@KDaddict. I think I answered some of your questions, but the overall purpose is to just do something that brings enjoyment to myself and others. I don't consider this high art or anything. That being said, I spent years in art school, and I can tell you that most of the "interpretations" are made up unfortunately, and styles are more frequently mimicked than felt. It's sad that art has gone that way, but I actually know someone who sells their paintings for hundreds of thousands of dollars, but pays someone to make up their deeper meanings :P
I actually consider this a cross between drawing and photography. The hardest part is finding something aesthetically pleasing to draw (I would say that about 1 in 10 drama episodes has anything I consider "good enough"). I do wish I was more impressionistic, but I trend towards extremely abstract or extremely realistic(and skip everything inbetween!). I think my problem is that I'm obsessive, and even when I start with something looser, I keep working away until it ends up looking like a screenshot.
I have done some basic watercolor paintings (with real paint and paper!) on my blog and I will eventually do some of those over here as well. I've had my supplies packed up for the last few months since I've been moving, but I complete my final move this week, and will finally have my own home again! That being said, I find that real watercolors are only well suited to certain types of scenes and lighting (that's largely why I switched more to digital) so it probably won't be a frequent thing.
I'll try to work on my style in the future, but I'm sure it'll take a while! I used to use different tools in Corel Painter but I've forced myself to change (for the sake of long term benefit) and that's been my current focus.
Anyways, hopefully that clears everything up! Rather than being offended, I choose to just be motivated! I've actually been been bothered by the realism myself at times, so I'm going to try to gradually branch out a little (it may be VERY gradual; I'm a creature of habit). Thanks for the comments :)

Thank you for explaining. I understand where you are coming from now. Keep doing what you love. There should be no pressure to change or branch out in style as a result of the Qns. I'd say they are just that: Qns.
Thanks for posting esp for that one from SLA. It gave vent to those who were watching. Everyone just flocked to it! Cheers.

i dont think they are being too harsh since i admit i was about to ask what they said myself, but was too afraid to.
these can be easily created with a filter in a few seconds, although perhaps it'll look less perfect (we could always argue about that). but it doesn't serve much purpose.
it's a great idea add your own interpretation :D i studied art myself and get what you mean about forced interpretations at times, but since this is something you enjoy (both doing art and watching korean dramas), it would be pretty fun.
for instance, you could make Jeong Woo cast a sideways glance at Ae-ra in the picture above. or turn this into a WhatsApp advert by changing the logo and using a green colour scheme? just throwing out some ideas...
