Jaejoong eyes drama return in Triangle

Are we going to have a JYJ-filled spring season in dramaland? Yoochun’s got Wednesdays and Thursdays sewn up for the foreseeable future, and now Kim Jaejoong is in talks to join the MBC production of Triangle, a Monday-Tuesday melodrama that has already cast Lee Beom-soo (Prime Minister and I) and Im Shi-wan (Equator Man) as two of three orphaned brothers separated early in their lives, who grow up not knowing of each other’s whereabouts.

Jaejoong would play the middle brother, a role that was rumored about going to his Dr. Jin co-star Song Seung-heon. (It would still be a Dr. Jin reunion, though, with Lee Beom-soo in the mix.) The character is a gangster (…so I see the Song Seung-heon connection), which adds a nice(ly perverse) dynamic to the fact that hyung is a cop. While Jaejoong’s reps are cautiously saying that he isn’t finalized, the drama will be holding its first script reading this week so I think there’s a fair shot it’ll happen.

I find the casting a little odd not because of Jaejoong himself but because I understood the age gaps when it was Lee Beom-soo (early forties), Song Seung-heon (mid-thirties), and Im Shi-wan (mid-twenties). Jaejoong is on the younger end, though, which adds a larger gap between the eldest and his two dongsaengs; casting someone older might have helped Lee Beom-soo feel less like a father figure and more like the hyung. But maybe they’ll write it in and make it work out in the story, like Lee Seo-jin being hyung to Taecyeon in Wonderful Season… or maybe that’s a bad example because I don’t really buy that they’re brothers in that drama.

Triangle comes from the writer-PD pair who brought us Swallow the Sun and All In, so I’m expecting grandiose plots with lots of flash and flair. It’ll take over the Empress Ki slot beginning in May.

I haven't decided if I like JJ's acting per se, as I only watched him once in Protect the Boss, but I for one am not feeling as loss to swap him for Mr. Handtowel, veiny and 'I-am-so-handsome' the latter maybe.

I don't think so. Junsu seems to be resolute in avoiding the cameras and staying in musicals.

Good for him (junsu) tbh. I mean, Cjes has an oddly great connections in the drama industry so they could've gotten him whatever roles he likes if he had wanted to act ... but he said before that he won't do something he's not 100% sure he can do well. And he only like the singing & performing parts in musicals, not the acting.

Junsu doesn't like acting, he said it himself that he prefers to be on stage rather than act in front of a camera. He got offers before but he firmly said he do not like to go on acting, he prefers to use his free time off musicals, concerts and album promotion playing soccer under his team FC MEN instead. Which is good for him since he already won Best Actor in there and is widely acknowledge as musical actor.

I doubt JJ will accept this though since JYJ have already confirmed JYJ's comeback this 2nd half of 2014 after Yoochun finishes Three Days. So if he accept this one then they will have to delay JYJ's comeback again which is highly unlikely since they will already have to enlist by early next year and they said it themselves that they want to make a comeback album before thy enlist.

I don't think the drama will delay their comback ,cos it's supposed to finish in the middle of July and Jaejoong can participate in the comback activities at the same time.
He probably has written a few songs for the group album this month as he mentioned in an interview last month.

He needs to comback on screen before enlisted for the military. His fans desire for it, and it's better to do sth meaningful during the vacant months before JYJ's comback instead of doing nothing.

I respect that about him. He know where his strengths lie and he sticks to that, instead of foraying into something bigger than him like most idols.
Although, tbh, I wish Jaejoong did the same. He is a phenomenal singer, but there is something off about his acting. It's a combination of inexperience, unusually good looks (as weird as that sounds) and meek speaking voice. :/

I think if JYJ can freely promote themselves, JJ might not even go for dramas. He knows his weaknesses, hence he said he'd never take on a main leading role in a drama. Ah, if they can promote at the variety department, I think JJ might be the one in charge if variety. Yoochun for drama and junsu for musical. Unfortunately this is the only venue he (as a leader) can help promote JYJ in tv.

I doubt Jae considers acting a weakness. .. because seriously he isn't a bad actor. He's never been. He is inexperienced? Yes. But I guess it's because he's being as cautious as he can be and seeing his nature as a perfectionists, it's understandable. Just let him be. He will master in this if he wants. He always does.

0

"meek speaking voice"? Lol his speaking voice is probably one of his most attractive features. And when he makes it lower like in for Muwon in PTB :Q ___ Yeah. He still doesn't have much experience, but he's been doing quite well so far and lack of experience is not something that can't be helped xD... His looks might be a problem if he wants to impersonate a normal next door guy, but it can also become a strength for other type of roles. Specifically for the blockbuster-charming ones ;D

I sound like a broken record by now, with the age obsession in this fandom, but I don't mind the age gaps. Siblings with huge gaps exist. What is be odd and worrying is the skill level and also the types of artists involved.

Most of us can remove ourselves enough from reality when watching a work to see the characters, rather than actors, but to a lot of drama fans, this will just be two pretty idols and an ajeossi.

Song is by far a worse actor than Jae Joong, but that's a pretty low bar to begin with, since the latter is not lead material either. Especially in a melodrama.

A good actor of the in-between age and without carrying the "idol" tag around, which some people will inevitably mind, would bring balance. So if I do take this seriously for a moment, I can't say I like this possibility any better than Song.

But let's see. I don't expect much anyway. I was actually wishing that Song would join so I can have my laughs with a possible repeat of the 'Dr. Jin' level of fail.

Yeah, I completely agree with you. It's not the age that matters (siblings over 10 years apart do exist), it's definitely who they've chosen. There must be other options in Jaejoong's age range that could handle this sort of material (which imo, he definitely cannot). It doesn't bother me that he's an idol, but it does bother me that we now only have one good actor who can pull their weight in this cast (and Oh Yeon Soo of course).

Orion, I am right there with you on age gap stuff.

There is nothing implausible about large age gaps between siblings, especially in parents with multiple marriages, but also not implausible in siblings with the same parents. And I do not think that a 44 year old will necessarily feel like a father figure to a 28 year old (I am using actor ages here, approx.)

All over the world people are platonic friends and have romantic and sexual relationships with others with large age gaps between them and never ever feel a parent/child bond.

Also, is there is an assumption here being applied to actors ages correlating to character ages? The characters may easily be much younger or older than the actual actor.

I don't even bat an eye at idol casting. It's not going away. I'm pretty much part of the Yoda School of Drama Watching. Review your pros and cons on a drama, and watch or watch not, lol.

I don't really care about the numbers either, mainly it has to do with the chemistry..in this case, the sibling-chemistry. Is it tangible? Do they look AND feel like brothers? Not just visually but can they build a certain kind of rapport that would convince the audience of the relationship? It's like that for me in every drama, age difference I could care less about.

I really don't understand why some actors/actresses are being called old or can't play a role oposite an idol "oppa" because "they are too old" Lee Beom Soo may be 44 but uhm check this out http://bentara.asia/blog/biography-lee-beom-soo/ i would not mind an "old guy" like this in my life

Giving to Jaejoong a role originally intended for Song Seung Hun? The only thing these two actors have in common is their gender, their appearance in Dr Jin and the very very vast potential for improvement regarding their acting skills.

I am curious to see the dynamics between those three as brothers. Though siblings with big age gaps exist (and I'm one of them), I hope they'll have a good way to explain how the oldest lost track of the other two, because he'd have a considerable age by the time the youngest was born.

Anyway, I wouldn't be so worried about Jaejoong's acting, but rather the gangster role which I find it difficult to picture him in. Though I was also apprehensive about his role in Dr. Jin and he was the only thing worth seeing in that drama.

They mention their father, so I am guessing something tore them apart in a violent fashion. The oldest would have probably been close to an adult when it happened.

It's 20 years ago and Lee definitely does not look under 38-40, so his character would have been 18-20 when it happened. Unless force or amnesia (good Dramagods, no) were involved, I also don't see what his excuse could be.

My husband was 19 years old when his youngest brother was born so big age gaps are not uncommon even among full siblings. I like Jaejoong as an actor. I have seen him in Protect the Boss, Dr Jin and Jackal Is Coming and I was pleasantly surprised each time. He has a sweet, sincere but flirty quality about him which translates well to film. He has lots of potential for growth and improvement.

The age is fine in terms of realism, but it does raise the issue of how they got separated, if we look at their ages.

How do they plan to explain how the oldest brother lost the younger ones? If he were not legally an adult when it happened (let's say 20), then they would have taken the kids away from him and there's our explanation. At 20, he still would have been a minor and maybe he went back for them a year later, but they were gone. 20 years later, which is supposed to be the time gone by, he'd be 40.

There is no way they will make him younger than 38-40 (so 18-20 when they got separated). Lee can manage looking around 40, but younger than that and we'll get 'Giant' silliness all over again. :P

On the other hand, if they go with Lee's own age and the character is 44 now (so 24 when they got separated), then something else must have happened for them to lose each other. If he were legally an adult, he would have raised them himself, so what happened and why did he lose them then?

Gee, good questions so I guess we will have to watch this drama because it beats me. I'm still completely baffled by how a control freak, bad boyfriend with serious stalker issues like Kim Tan ended up with the girl in Heirs and that ended weeks ago.

I watched the first episode of Giant and then never went back to it. Are these brothers supposed to be full siblings or what? Don't they just have the same father but different mothers? Isn't the Dad some kind of serial seducer and abandoner of women and his offspring end up in different orphanages? Otherwise, you're right - why doesn't the oldest brother know what has happened to the younger brothers as, if the youngest of his brothers is now 22, he would have to be in his late teens upon time of orphaning. Unless the Mom is just really, really careless.

Why oh why does it have to be the old cop/gangster/chaebol triangle again though? I haven't watched a lot of K-dramas and this feels pretty tired and shopworn even to me.

The premise sounds nice and I don't mind the age gap, either. I can buy the two younger siblings being born in a closer time frame. My own sister has a decade on me and my brother eight years, lol and I don't think Jaejoong looks so young that he can't play thirty or so. Basically it could be a sort of inverse of me and my own siblings, where the youngers are born close together (for me the olders are born close together).

Also, I like Jae Joong the actor. I guess I'm different from most since I don't listen to JYJ and acting is the only thing I've really seen him do. He might not be able to give the most nuanced performance or much pathos (he has some and has given me feelings in the past, lol) but he's natural and I never feel like I am watching his past character or him play himself.

same here! I don't really listen to JYJ as a fan, (may be only 2 songs), I like some of Junsu's OSTs. My first impression of them was as actors. I first knew Jaejoong from "Sunao ni Narenakute". so that Idol Tag doesn't work on me. I see Jaejoong and Yoochun as actors first. and I can tell from an objective view that they seem better than some 'true actors'.

The youngest being the furthest in age compared to the elder siblings is far more common than the vice versa version, cos the youngests tend to be surprise babies (like my mom, heh heh).

But it doesn't mean that the opposite can't happen. But when it happens, it usually implies that the first child was unexpexcted and probably was conceived when the parents were young and unstable yet in life.

Its really is sooooo baffling to me how Idol actors in korea are immediately perceived as bad actors while in Japan, they are never labeled as an idol actor in the first place!!

This tag to idols who venture into acting is really getting on my nerves, I have seen sooooo many professional actors in korean drama that seriously just make me wanna laugh, and I can honestly say that there are only a few idol actors that come of to me as bad actors from the beginning.

I saw Jaejoong in Protect The Boss and he has this charisma that makes him very likable. Plus a gangster role is not really that hard to master.

I really like the fact that He isn't choosing roles that focus on his pretty face, I can see that he is making the effort to be seriously taken into consideration when it comes to acting.

while melodramas are not my thing, I plan to watch the drama because the story sounds interesting.

"Its really is sooooo baffling to me how Idol actors in korea are immediately perceived as bad actors while in Japan, they are never labeled as an idol actor in the first place!"

I'm not sure that's true, for example, I don't think anyone has perceived Kim Woobin as bad, in fact, I would argue he's better than some of actor-actors he's co-starred with. There are also plenty of bad Japanese idol actors out there and that everyone knows are bad!

The only difference I feel there is between J/K dramas and idol acting, is that k-dramas seems to be more overrun by idols, both by casting them as leads or having dramas where half the cast seems to be an idol! But, that's my subjective feeling (don't have any numbers to back that up).

I don't think that's true: rather, idols stick to idol dramas, and real actors stick to real dramas, with very little mixing (unless the idol is ridiculously famous, or has proven themselves a decent actor).

Idol dramas are often based on manga XD

And the difference between an "idol" actor and one that was simply previously/currently in a band is, imo, very obvious in Japan.

"Idol actors" would include 90% of the Johnny's that act (I will exempt Kimutaku and one or two others), 98% of the AKB48 members that act, and at least 85% of all other acting singing group members

I didn't think he did a bad job in Protect The Boss actually, as for age gaps, they can be closed if you have a good script and acting to begin with, so I don't see why I should shoot this drama down without even watching it yet.

I think that's my motto for dramas: Give everything a chance, and when you've watched the first episode, you'll know just how bad/good it can get.

So bring it on Dramaland! I need more things to watch! (I can only deem God's Gift-14 days as a drama worth watching for this period sadly...)

Like most here, I'm not worried about the age gaps. I'm not too worried either by the acting skills. Lee Beom-soo definitely is a cut above the rest, but I think Im Siwan is pretty good, too. And who knows? Jaejoong's acting chops might improve in this drama.

What I'm worried about is the execution (writing, storyline, etc). We'll see how that goes come Episode 1.

I highly doubt JJ is going tp accept this since JYJ have already confirmed JYJ’s comeback this 2nd half of 2014 after Yoochun finishes Three Days. Also said they will have JYJ Concert Tours. So if he accept this one then they will have to delay and push back JYJ’s comeback and concert tour again which is highly unlikely since they will already have to enlist by early next year (well Jaejoong atleast since he is considered 85 liner in Korea and is already 30 in Korean age and will be 31 next year which is the age limit) and they said it themselves that they want to make a comeback album before they enlist. So i doubt he will choose this over a JYJ album!!

I don't see how doing a drama will have any affect on a potential JYJ comeback. It's not like JYJ is going to be allowed to promote their new album through variety or music shows so it's not exactly going to be a super busy time for them.

In 2012, JYJ released a documentary and did the second half of their world tour while Jaejoong was simultaneously filming a drama (Dr. Jin) and movie (Jackal is Coming), so I'm pretty sure he's used to this type of multitasking.

Well, I see it this other way:

1) JYJ have all involved themselves into individual projects for a few years now. I think there is a high posibility that Jaejoong, as well as Junsu are also considering individual activities this years. Yoochun is oviously focusing now on his individual project right now.

2) since Jaejoong is going to enlist this year, more the reason for him to get into a drama! (and all the activities he wishes for) If he is smart he knows he wont have projects once in the army.

3) he can perfectly well do both? If there is anyone who focus on JYJ activities, is Jaejoong who has compose by far the majority of JYJ songs. I'm pretty sure he can manage. remember that JYJ is composed by 3 idividuals, while jaejoong is filming (if he takes this project) the other 2 can defintely work on the album :)

Also he has so much chemistry with the male lead role in PtB that well, i will give him the chance to prove himself if he can show that brotherly chemistry with the others male leads.

If he can or not make a good ganster, I will have to wait and see. He mentioned before he wants to play the bad guy and in real life i dont think he is as delicate as people may think.

I will wait and see, if the plot is good, then I will watch it

I haven't really watched any of Jaejoong's dramas (prefer him as a singer) but I might start with this one, if only to see how he is going to be as a gangster with that pretty face. ^^

I liked him in Protect the Boss, though I dumped the drama for the writing going bipolar at the end.
Dr Jin didn't happen. No it didn't.

Lol JJ as a gangster...is anyone else getting a Vacation flashback? I may be biased because I am a JYJ fan but I'm looking forward to see him acting again. I always thought he has potential (more so than Yoochun anyways). And the more experience you get, the more you can grow.

"I always thought he has potential (more so than Yoochun anyways)"

Whut. Really o.O

i think with acing there are two kinds of actors
the ones that are blessed with natural talent and the ones that work really hard, and excel through technique

Jaejoong has neither. *gets flamed*
whilst he's not outright terrible he's mediocre.

Yoochun whilst obviously being the most green of the bunch in Sungkyunkwan Scandal had both screen presence and equanimity of an actor . He lacked the technical ability but he had the "it" factor. his potential was apparent in his scenes with more experienced veteran actors.
I like him because he has shown consistent improvement. He's not resting on his laurels just because his hallyu leverage would get him roles.
I would say he became truly an actor in my eyes with rooftop prince. Yoochun isnt perfect but i think he has the potential to last as an actor (a good one) even after his time as an idol passes.

Jaejoong should be a singer. he has a great voice; is a better singer (and was blessed with a better voice) than yoochun and he should nurture that.
Both junsu and jaejoong have great potential as singers.

Oh girl... I do understand that you don't like Jaejoong or his acting, but even if you don't think he has the natural talent for acting. Who the hell are you to affirm that he doesn't "work really hard, and excel through technique"?
Jaejoong doesn't take anything for granted. He worked hard for everything he's achieved in life. Be it his career as a celebrity, his voice training or now his career as an actor. Even in the mess that was Dr Jin he NEVER GAVE UP and gave his best to live up his character until the very end. So don't come here with these comments as if you were trying to imply that Jaejoong is "resting on laurels just because his hallyu leverage would get him roles". Girl please! If he would had ever done that, he would have easily taken one of those idolish dramas with the same F4/school themes that repeat themselves over and over again. He never did. He is by far the most popular member in his group (actual and former), but he never used that to get that kind of role that have the easier passage to the drama fandom. Anyway, I don't expect you to like him. Just don't throw words about his will to do better as if you knew. You don't.

lol, I think the point was that there are actors who can get better through hard work, but there are the ones who can't...

I don't think Anniii claimed that Jaejoong didn't work hard enough =)

He was never bad to begin with and I could see his improvement even in the same drama as the episodes went by. Also, this is gonna be like his third drama. If you want to see an improvement, you need to see the sequential acts first.

....as a mega-fangirl crazed Jaejoong fan, I am super happy to see him back on screen but why pick this projectttttttttt TT_TT

idk, but it just sounds so..... boring to me. Melodramas are really not my thing. And somehow, he seems to have a knack of picking bad projects, with Dr. Jin and The Jackal is coming, which are together the probably the worst drama and movie I have ever seen in my life.

I really hope I'm wrong on this one....who knows, it might be a great drama. Crossing my fingers ><

Hope jae can meet all your standards acting wise.. i think it'll motivate him to do better.. yes?

If he acts well then he will get praised if not then he will be criticised....plus he is a full grown man! He doesn't need fangirls to protect him from criticism...
I know you are fan, but learn to take criticism for oppas sometimes instead of lashing out on everyone...

And this is exactly why I prefer to stay with drama fans now on...I have had enough of bat shit craziness of kpop fandoms..

calm your tits a little, will you? i've been a huge fan since their debut (aka 2003 not 2010) but i don't have to like /everything/ they do. it's mainly up to my personal preference--- like, how i would like one song over another; or how i would prefer if they let yoochun handle the dramas and keep jaejoong (plus yunho and changmin faaaaaar far) away from them, and junsu's perf with his musicals so can we never drag him to acting in dramas please.

I'm a big fan of all 5 DBSK guys and I can easily say that some of their drama gigs are downright embarrassing. Does that make me a bad fan? No. It just shows I'm not delusional. I liked them as singers and idols. If they made a good drama and did well, it's a bonus for me.

Dr. Jin SUCKED, plain and simple, just like how Yunho's "Heading to the Ground" sucked and how Changmin's "Paradise Ranch" sucked.

Well, you know enough to know their ship name. LOL I was just saying that as a long-time fan of Jaejoong (7 years FYI) and the rest of DBSK, it doesn't make me a bad fan to criticize the ones I admire.

And I can drag whoever's names all I want to make my point. And Yunho is my number 1 of all, yet I don't get offended as hell when people criticize his shitty dramas and not-so-good acting. Learn to take in criticisms.

0

Well, it's comfirmed and i just want to be happy for jae.. happy thoughts and good vibes.. ^_______^ bye everyone.. fighting!

0

excuses, isn't it irrelevant to drag their names here? It has nothing to do with Jae and his new drama.. yunho is your number 1, right? Please don't compare him to jae.. yunho has no talent, at all!

lol @ people saying Jaejoong has more potential than Yoochun. Can't even take them seriously.

I'd love to watch Jaejoong in a role like this. He doesn't impress me as an actor, but he doesn't annoy me either. Considering the other alternative was SSH, it's not like it's a big loss for the drama if Jaejoong took up this role.

Jaejoong isn't bad... He just needs to let go of his self-consiousness and emerge into the role more, so that you stop thinking "that's JYJ's Jaejoong" and see him as the character he potrays. He hasn't achieved this so far, IMO, but there's room for improvement and he might end up surprising everyone, who knows.

plus, popularity is a given wherever kim jaejoong go. like his acting or not, one can guarantee this drama will be popular worldwide.

remember in 2013, there's oberservation by broadcast channel which drama that's exported the most in the year before?
no.1 is Dr.jin to 35 countries
2nd is protect the boss (forgot to how many countries)

at least the staff & actors will have profit just from his name alone and won't make them starved.

on the other hand,

"Jaejoong isn’t bad… He just needs to let go of his self-consiousness and emerge into the role more, so that you stop thinking “that’s JYJ’s Jaejoong” and see him as the character he potrays." ---> THIS!

i don't think JJ has no potential in acting, he has the charm to catch people's attention just by his look alone, and so far he keeps on improving (i deff enjoy jackal is coming - tho the story is kinda meh), probably yoochun has the more natural talent (he's a chunface afterall lol) but jaejoong can hold on his own.

given the right material and directing, i can see him successful in the long run

Honestly, the synopsis of the drama doesn't sound too excited (long lost brothers' reunion?), but it is exciting to look forward to what this turns out into. The actor choices are good and I'll be sure to watch this if the first few episodes are promising.

This drama is soo not my taste but I might have to watch for Jaejoong.
I love JJ but still could not make myself watch Jin, (mostly because the surgery scenes totally grossed me out). But I did skim through some episodes FFing most of the stuff without JJ. I was impressed with how he portrayed Kyungtak's complicated relationship with his father. There was this one scene where an injured/just escaped KT gazes at his father from a distance and his facial expression kind of broke my heart.
I think JJ is good at portraying vulnerability whereas Yoochun is better at gravitas. T

Some idols can act, some can't. Not excited with JJ casting. However, it is not as if SSH is a good actor. I agree, given the differences in age, SSH is a better choice.

I never had a problem with idols acting as long as they show that they have the potential. If not, they should go for smaller roles to learn how to act before handling bigger roles.

Some idols are just better in turns of acting. Im Siwan from Z:EA is a decent actor. I look forward to his performance in this drama. He was good in his latest movie and has even gotten awards overseas for his acting.

Lol, commenting section is like the drama before the drama. Love Im Siwan and Jaejoong, so I am in.

Given a choice between Song Seung Heon or Jaejoong, no contest. SSH seriously has scarred me for life since Dr.Jin. I can totally see Jaejoong as a gangster.

While I can be quite nitpicky when watching English productions, I am way less critical with Kdramas because I am no expert of the culture or the language. I can get into the flow of any Kdrama as long as the story is addicting, the acting is believable and the leading men are pretty. Yes, I am that shallow.

Hi beanies,

Its my first comment.. but there's a 80-s Indian movie 'Amar Akbar Anthony' which has the same plot.. one Hyung is a cop, one is conman/ thief and the other is a struggling musician. The dynamics of fate, melo and kismet made this movie one of the greatest hits of its generation..

This one sounds so familiar.... maybe Someone's been shopping for inspiration. Hoping the drama will be different....cheers to seeing Jaejoong...
