Idol D.O. cast in warm romantic melo It’s Okay, It’s Love

Here we have some more casting news on the Noh Hee-kyung-written drama It’s Okay, It’s Love, which we’d noted previously to be considering Gong Hyo-jin and Jo In-sung as its leads. That makes sense since Jo In-sung anchored Noh’s previous drama That Winter, The Wind Blows, though neither he nor Gong have confirmed yet.

We do, on the other hand, have confirmation for a supporting character with idol singer D.O. of the twelve-member pop group Exo, and I’m not gonna lie, the name Exo strikes a little bit of terror into my heart because oh my god the fans are intense. Please don’t hurt me for saying that. I’m sorry and yes your oppas are very cute.

It’s Okay, It’s Love is the drama that reteams Noh with director Kim Kyu-tae of Padam Padam and That Winter, and is about a a hero with OCD and a heroine who is a psychiatrist. The drama purports to be about psychology and promises to tell stories of modern lives and love with a fun and poignant spirit, as a “romantic mental clinic drama.” I don’t actually think that’s a thing, but we’ll let them call themselves whatever they want.

D.O. plays a high schooler who aspires to be a novelist and dreams of hitting it big as a best-selling author to make his mother happy. Aww, he’s a mama’s boy. Despite his sweet face and pure spirit, he is also a mysterious figure who will have a “large impact” on the story.

It’s Okay, It’s Love now has a tentative timeslot, and plans to air on SBS in July.

Thow a stone in dramaland, and you'll hitting an idol. While there's so many good underrated actors/actresses they won't get a work if they compete with idol. Idol is like double-edged sword. Producers will get loads of money and keep their fans happy but their acting, especially those who can't act, will make serious drama watchers cringe. D.O is cute, but cute alone isn't enough to act in drama especially in melo

Yeah, but generalization will take you only so far.

How do we know that those coming up on the acting branch of the business will know how to act or if their acting will be any better than generic?

Does it matter which side of the business you start out? I ask this question because, traditionally, actors don't just act - they also sing and dance, professionally.

I am more concerned about the industry's inability to supply good dramas in sufficient number for the up-and-coming talent. So much recycling and copying a copy.

Another side of the story to consider is that some idols get into the music business in order to get a foothold into the acting industry, because sometimes that's their first passion.

I have no problems with idols acting either. Acting isn't rocket science...it's possible for people to be good at it even if they haven't had lot of experience or training in it. Some idols are bad at acting, but some actors/actresses are also bad at it.

I have no problem with idols acting at all, as long as they keep the Yunhos and Taecyeons of this world away from my drama screen.

Because when you show that degree of awfulness at acting, you have no business taking the role from someone who would be more competent at it and who would probably have more to offer in the role than good looks.

0

It's true acting isn't rocket science, but it IS an art, and one in which hard work paired with considerable talent makes all the difference. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if D.O. has what it takes to be anything other than an EXO fangirl draw for this drama.

0

I guess I just disagree with the idea that "actor/actress" automatically equals "good." There are quite a few examples I can think of where that's not the case.

0

Personally I see no problem with it as long as the idols who get those roles are decent actors.

And there are plenty of idols who have delivered great or at least good performances onscreen - recent examples include Jung Eun-ji in Answer Me 1997, Junhyung and Dahee in Monstar, Im Siwan in Moon/Sun, Kang Min-hyuk, Krystal and Park Hyung-shik in Heirs (who also did very well previously in Heartstrings, High Kick 3 and Nine respectively), IU in You're The Best Lee Soon-shin and Pretty Man, Sooyoung in Dating Agency Cyrano, Yoona in PM&I, and of course, BoA in her recent drama special.

What I do have a problem with is producers and networks continuing to foist idols who are absolutely wretched at acting on us in dramas, simply because said idols are the 'visual' of their group or were funny on a variety show once (variety show cuteness =/= acting skill, sorry).

And no matter what their fans think, such people are not entitled to acting careers simply by virtue of being idols - if an icon like BoA has the humility to wait to make her drama debut when she gains enough skill as an actress, then the others can wait and work on their acting skills too.

haha skelly, I have no shortage of snark myself, you know that!

And there are plenty of idols who take smaller, low-profile supporting roles and build from there so they actually get better at acting, it at least speaks to a less entitled attitude than the Taecyeons and Suzys of the world. I can get behind that ethic, if it shows results.

(Hyoyoung of School 2013/Best Love, and Minah of Vampire Idol/Master's Sun, are two good examples - not flashy work but a variety of roles that they're at least able to inhabit convincingly). But the flipside is that because their agencies aren't SM or JYP, it'll be a while before these girls get to do more acting work, forget about leads)

Everyone can do it, but I'd rather have real (or future)actors than idols in my drama. It grits my teeth that young singers are being used supposedly to draw more ratings or whatever. And those who persuade an acting carrier or/and are experienced actors don't get the chance they deserve.

Feelin' like rantin'...

I don't have a problem with idols unless they're shit at acting and continue to be so, but the real problem is that it's starting to feel like having an idol career is practically a requirement for a young actress in the 19-25 range hoping to break into mainstream tv leads (if your name is not Park Shin-hye or Shin Se-kyung, that is). And that is just effed up.

D.O has already played a major role in a movie. So although he is new he obviously showed enough promise to be cast in another role. Just because someone is an idol doesn't mean they are less deserving of a role. If anything they need to work even harder then a newbie actor because of the stigma involved with being an idol. He needs to be given a chance instead of being brushed aside as only looks.

D.O hasn't acted yet, so don't be too quick to judge his acting abilities. I like him, but if his acting is bad, I would point it out too, even though I'm a fan. KDramas > Kpop for me.

He did a short "voice acting" on a radio show, and I thought he had potential actually. But we'll have to see the acting on screen~

And I have to agree that some of their fans are too intense, but yeah, some. Hah.

EXO fans are intense, and I say that as an EXO fan. LOL there are lot of young fans who got into K-pop because of EXO, so the immaturity is manifested a lot. You know the fandom is insane when people get flashbacks of Cassiopeias at the height of their insanity. Then again, EXO fans still got nothing on Cassiopeia circa 2006-2008.

With that said, hopefully DO is a pleasant surprise in this drama and the movie role he also got recently.

I don't understand why people are judging D.O before even giving him a chance. Yes, he's an idol. Yes, idol actors usually can't act. But that doesn't mean you can generalise all of them especially when you have idol actors like Yoochun and Rain who have been very successful in trasitioning from singing to acting. Even Yoon Eun-hye was an idol. All I'm saying is, D.O deserves a chance to prove whether he can act or not.

@choihyera
i agree. even though most idols cannot act, people should not be so harsh. for example, i don't get why people say Jung Yunho is a "horrible" actor. I admit that he's not a good actor, but I've seen worse. on the contrary, he is a very talented musician...he can sing, rap, dance, write lyrics, compose music. also, he does a lot of charity work and he's book smart...pursuing a master's degree at chungwoon university.

D.O. is a talented musican from EXO (one of my favorite bands). people should give him a chance. even if he can't act, it doesn't matter because he can sing and dance.

I'll give him the benefit of a doubt. And yes it is true that an individual deserves a chance. But I would also like to note that the art of acting is different from the art of singing and dancing. Statements like; "my idol can sing","my oppa can dance","my unni is pretty" should not be use as counter-argument when people are speaking about acting in films and dramas.

@j18
I KNOW there's a BIG difference between acting and singing, but I'm not counter-arguing because I never denied their mediocre acting.
What I'm saying is that even though idols (like Jung Yunho, Kim Hyun Joong, Taecyeon) cannot act, they still have talent with "other stuff" like singing, dancing, songwriting. Do you get my point?

0

Required fields are marked *

I did get your point. But what I'm trying to say is "No one in the acting industry gives a shit if someone is musically-skilled". Someone might be a successful act in music but you cannot use that as a statement since we are specifically speaking about acting. Respect for idol/s for whatever they have achieved in music industry. But once an idol act in film/drama it is a different scenario. The achievements and musical talents that an idol have does not correlate in acting.

0

@j18
yes, but you don't get my point entirely. of course, it really matters in kdramaland if an idol cannot act. yes it make the audience cringe, yes there's big difference between acting and singing, but all I'm saying is even though someone cannot act, they still have a successful career because of talent for other stuff.... in music. so they still have self esteem about their achievements.

0

"even if he can’t act, it doesn’t matter because he can sing and dance"

but... they're in a drama? unless it's just a cameo, of course the person, idol or not, should at least be decent enough ._.

i don't see any reason why we shouldn't call idols/non-idols out on their shitty acting. i can think that someone sucks as an actor and still like them, yeah?

I'm gonna butt in here, but it seems you aren't getting the point. Who exactly is questioning their self-esteem or success!? I think mostly everyone here has an issue with the fact that they can't act. No one is saying they aren't talented in their own field or that they shouldn't succeed. They can sing, dance and do all the stuff they do and earn all the money they want. But they shouldn't be in a drama because all a drama needs is a legitimate actor.

Have nothing against idols unless it's idols who can't act to save their life and are continually getting roles.
Unfortunately it is true many idols have that label attached to them considering there are way more flops than there are successful transitions.
Personally for me, every idol starts off with a clean slate. The points gets deducted after they give a cringe-worthy/unnatural performance.
On the upside, here is a large group of idols in dramaland that i enjoy watching(some stronger than others); like yoo chun, IU, sooyoung, si won, baro, dohee, eunjung, UEE, jung eun ji, im seul ong, lee seung gi (well he's a triple threat rare bird who transitions between singing, acting, variety smoothly so he doesn't quite fall under the same category as your typical idol).

I would like to give them a chance, but often idols are pitchforked into a major role without any relevant experience (ahem, as in this instance), and then we are told we need to 'give them a chance' because they are 'still learning.' So we get to watch them over and over again while they attempt to become an actor.
I resent having to watch someone stumble around and learn their craft simply because they bring in fangirls who would willingly watch them sit on a couch for 16 hours. Taecyon is a good example; how many more dramas is he going to pollute before someone finally decides that his lack of talent outweighs his supposedly good looks?

When I picture Gong Hyo-jin and Jo In-sung in my mind,I get the the idea of "love with a fun spirit"! ^ ^
The seriousness, manliness of Jo In-sung with the fun, cuteness, innocent of Gong Hyo-jin WILL make this drama so much interesting! ^ ^

The scriptwriter of this upcoming drama is the one who has penned dramas "That Winter The Wind Blows","World within". I have watched these two dramas. And WHAT I got is that her style of writing is different! She also doesn't seek for HIGH ratings! The characters that she she create are difficult 2 portray SO she chooses great stars for her casting! WHAT is more interesting & GOOD is that the FEMALE character of her dramas are well written & tailor made for the actresses!! The female characters of her dramas have depth in their personality UNLIKE other dramas! MOST of the Korean scriptwriters in Korean are women & they TEND to write historical, fascinating & well written MALE characters!they usually SPOIL the female ones SO the actresses are SAID to have been wasted! This scriptwriter is SO EMINENT that could make superstar "Song Hye Kyo" come back 2 small screen after 7 YEARS!! "Song Hye Kyo" won Daesang award for "APAN star award" ceremony, which is indeed a great award!! but there is also something about her dramas! NOT all the people(viewers) like & tune her dramas. I mean, her dramas arise the attention of critics in a positive way & make the cast be awarded! BUT unlike scriptwriter ,WORD MAGICIAN Kim Eun Sook, who makes her dramas POP CULTURE PHENOMENON,writer "No Hee-Kyung" is unable to cause sensation!!

I must agree with you that in most cases it does go horribly wrong (not just in K-entertainment) :/

Kdramas do tend to place a lot of importance on enhancing the male lead's attractiveness in every possible way and somehow I get the feeling they'll use this as a "quirky trait" to make him more handsome or cuter (like with Joo Won in Good Doctor).

It's not a problem if these topics are handled with sensitivity, but yes...in this case it does seem like it's just a fashionable yet impractical accessory to the story and the characters.

The potential doctor/patient dynamic (particularly if they are the OTP) in this drama, concerns me, too. It's just straight-up unethical for a psychiatrist to be romantically/sexually involved with his/her patient. That's a psychiatric universal. I hope this drama isn't so cavalier as to cross that line without acknowledging the serious implications of such a breech.

Since we are specifically speaking about idols as actors my point of contention is you cannot and should never use the statements like; "it doesn't matter that they can't act since they are successful in other fields" "it's okay that they are bland in acting since they have talents in music". Who uses those arguments when the subject matter is whether or not this so called idols have the aesthetics for acting.

I am a Kpop fan, an EXO fan and a drama fan. I can't disagree with the generalization that sometimes idols don't always transfer well over to the (small?) screen. But as someone who have yet to see Kyungsoo act, I am going to withhold judgement.

I am excited for this because this feels like it's going to be an easy watch. I am excited.

First, I did get your point. Or maybe we are havong somee sort of miscommunication.
Second, What started this whole argument is your statement that "even if he can't act, it doesn't matter bec. he can sing..". You fueled the conversation when you mentioned "even though someone cannot act, they still have successful career..". The statements that you've said are some sort of tongue-in-cheek remarks. Those are statements that have been used over and over again by idol fangirls/fanboys when issues abound regarding idols acting in films and dramas and even to some extent in theater productions. Your arguments are sort of excuses regarding the incapability or lack of thereof by idols when it comes to acting.

@shanda,
the post is for you.. I'm using my phone so I'm having some problems. Instead of "havong" that should be "having"; "some" instead of "somee"; and it should be "incapacity" instead of "incapability".

@j18 & shanda
Please pardon me for interfering, I admit I have in the past used that cliche to stand up for my fav kpop singers.
I'm not going to lie, even though I love the kpop boys and girl, a lot of them seriously cannot act. For Korean movies and dramas, it doesn't matter if you are a great singer or awesome dancer because acting is acting and if you stink then you stink.
However, I do agree that their career is not over because they should just stick with their expertise and continue being very successful as talented singers and performers that they are. Many fans around the world love them as musicians (even though they are bad actors). I'm not trying to use excuses but I agree with both sides to an extent.

Oh, honey, you have no idea. EXOtics (just using that to differentiate from the normal fans and the crazy fans) are ABSOLUTELY INSANE!!! I REPEAT

ABSOLUTELY INSANE.

Regular fans are fine.

But as long as D.O can act, I'll be fine. Otherwise, yeah. I'm going back to Mr. StagePresence and the Derp Squad on stage and behind the scenes. (I think Kai would be an OK actor because he can completely change his personality to go with the "Super Sexy Dancer" Kai vibe. Yeah, that might just be with dancing.)

It's funny how fans in male-dominated hobbies/interests are never deemed as "crazy" or hysterical, even in some very intense fanbases like you get in different sports.

Those fangirls who are more dedicated should not be labelled as insane - that's just backwards. Bad behaviour is bad behaviour and it should be called out on, but not in such a dehumanizing, derogatory way.

It's even more ridiculous considering most of those so-called insane fans are nothing more than a myth to international fans (who have most likely never met one in person nor on the internet).

And yeah, we don't know enough about Kyungsoo's acting skills at the moment, but he'll probably do alright. It's silly to oppose to that casting decision simply based on the fact that he's an idol, there's lots of different talents in the field.

You've realized how cringe worthy Kai is in acting right? He act before right? During the melon awards...One of the worst acting I've seen.

Everybody deserves a chance, and it would actually surprise me if I see a single drama without an idol or two in it these days, I feel sad though for all the real talented actors who don't get to have the job they rightfully deserve and put their talents to waste. Actors should also try singing, to be fair. ? That being said, I hope JIS will accept the role, it's been almost a year since TWTWB and I missed him on tv.

Huge Exo fan and huge kdrama fan here so all in all, I'm just real happy? I'm glad Exo is finally stepping into the small screen and I'm proud for D.O. that he's got this opportunity! Exo fighting~

I sincerely hope that the heroine is NOT the hero's psychiatrist. Is that too much to ask for in kdrama land? ...probably (ㅠ_ㅠ) I personally don't think that "It's okay, it's love" is an acceptable explanation for crossing the patient/doctor line re:mental health.

As for Do Kyungsoo a.k.a. D.O. we'll just have to see. It does seem like the role he's going to be portraying fits his "real-life characteristics" (as much as you see an idol's real character anyway) - I think I read on soompi(?) that the role's personality is quiet and shy or something along those lines so maybe it won't be too much of a stretch.

oh yes and i remember on twitter, worst fandom award goes to EXO STANS! 1st win.
LOLOLOL

I'm an exo stan btw and when I heard that D.O's acting I got excited. So let's not be quick to judge. Who knows, he can act after all.

I remember when they first debut, I thought it would be Kai who'll get in dramas first. well.

You do know that stan = stalker fans, right?
So if you want to comment that fellow fans are fanatic, I think you should just use 'fan'.

i thought Chanyeol will be in a drama first, since he had his appearances in SNSD Genie mv.

D.O. is my ultimate bias in Kpop.
As a fan I am glad that he's not taking on the lead role(so that if he's acting is bad it will still be watchable).

I know I probably missed it if his acting is really bad though(like I did for SHINee Minho who was 1 of my bias, frankly speaking I never watch a drama with him in it before).

Like many others have mentioned, D.O. will be in the movie 'Cart' as 1 of the supporting character.
Kim Kang Woo is also in the same movie.

I will be interested cause of the leads, but my bias sealed the deal for me. Being part of the fandom will remind me to watch this drama.

I am really excited and worried. Not sure how will his acting be like, but I really don't want him to get bashed(EXO experienced enough...)

Some interesting discussions here.
Like most people here, I'll reserve judgment for after we get to see him in those two roles.

Speaking of which, either SM has faith in him from his band or he's been getting specific casting calls. Who'd have thought that he would be the one from his band to snag not one but two roles already? As long as we're doing predictions for fun, though, I think he'll do fine, not awesome but not bad unless his nerves get to him. He's full of surprises in terms of talent and is good with his eyes in photoshoots. Though of course, we've seen having potential as a model does not mean a guaranteed great actor.

I honestly have a feeling that D.O will be decent because he's the only member to act so far, and he has both a drama and a movie. SM wouldn't be supporting him so much if he wasn't talented. I mean he's not tall, and honestly Chanyeol fits the Korean standard of beauty much better. There must be some talent there and I'm really hoping he'll do well.
On a side note I hope Chen sings an OST!

I'll try to be realistic here.
They have their own goal to achieve desirable ratings for their hard work, casting an idol would help to boost ratings. So, why not ?

In this case, although we aren't familiar with D.O acting skill, let's give him a chance to prove himself. Maybe working together with talented actress like Gong Hyo Jin (hopefully she''ll sign) will help him improve his skill by learning and watching and practice more. Hopefully won't disappoint us.

D.O fighting ! Do your best and surprise us okay ??

d.o. is the kinda guy that will keep his emotions inside, hes manly in that aspect, but the downside is that he gets hurt/offended easily

http://youtu.be/y-ys4rjCcd0?t=25s

hes really good with facial expressions too, esp when he's singing, he really prepares himself before hand to get into the mood
