God’s Gift – 14 Days: Episode 1
by dramallama
Hello all! I’m dramallama, and I will be part of the recapping team for this great new Monday-Tuesday drama. I am quite a newbie to all of this, so I apologize in advance for any stumbles I make along the way. But I hope from the bottom of my drama-loving heart that my writing will be a pleasant addition to your whole drama experience.
God’s Gift – 14 Days, or just God’s Gift for short, was high on my expectations radar, and it did not disappoint. Those teasers were pretty intense, but the show did pleasantly surprise me with a few laughs. There are a few missing details here and there that I believe will be filled as we get into our fourteen days, but overall, it’s fast-paced and engaging throughout the first episode, with our introductions embedded seamlessly into the plot. A lot of introductions though because Lee Bo-young has got a lot of men. So without further ado, the first episode!
EPISODE 1 RECAP
We begin with an eerie animation sequence about a mother who goes to great lengths to save her daughter, who has been stolen by Death. The mother first encounters the Goddess of Night and gives up her beautiful hair to find Death. Next, she encounters a bush of thorns which she must embrace tightly.
In the final obstacle to reclaim her daughter, the mother is asked to give up her eyes, and plucks them out without hesitation. The question of whether the daughter was saved is left unanswered, and we transition into real life as a fisherman’s hook catches a red shoe in the lake… and moments later a body surfaces nearby. Floating near the girl’s head is a hair tie with a bear decoration.
At home, our main family watches a newscast about a missing child who’s been found dead. (A detail to note: This child was found in the woods and the shoes pictured are different, so not the same child as in the opening.) Mom KIM SOO-HYUN (Lee Bo-young) takes in the news with worry and warns her naïve daughter not to follow strangers, especially men.
To that, daughter HAN SAET-BYUL (Kim Yoo-bin) breaks into a smile and asks if her dad counts, to which Dad HAN JI-HOON (Kim Tae-woo) replies with a big kiss. And then we see that the hair tie in Saet-byul’s hair is the same as that bear tie in the lake…
Off to school for Saet-byul, and Mom continues with her endless nagging: play nicely, listen to your teacher, don’t cause chaos by letting all the rabbits loose again (ha), don’t skip out on English class after school. To all of this, Saet-byul replies with a sigh.
Soo-hyun works as a broadcast writer for an investigative show on wanted criminals, and she spots her husband on a monitor for a different broadcast. Ji-hoon is a lawyer and is participating in a public debate with a presidential candidate on capital punishment, which he opposes (interesting).
The couple heads out together after their simultaneous broadcasts when a woman steps in their path and throws something into Ji-hoon’s face. She is infuriated by his stance on capital punishment, yelling that the criminal that killed her child needs to face the same death. As the crying woman is escorted out, we see that Ji-hoon is visibly shaken.
With the broadcast, the debate, and the capture of a wanted criminal coinciding on the same night, capital punishment resurges as a hot topic of the day. Soo-hyun heads out to interview an imprisoned criminal with one of her coworkers, who notes that ironically, the only eye-witness for this violent serial murder case was the prisoner’s younger brother. He’s mentally disabled, tthough Soo-hyun’s colleague supposes he was faking it to avoid the death penalty. And while the criminal confessed, his mother refuses to give up and appealed for a retrial, which was dismissed.
Next we meet KI DONG-CHAN (Jo Seung-woo) and his crew, who look like a gangster/loan-shark/con-artist trio. With some simple seducing of the security guard, the three easily enter the villa complex.
Saet-byul’s nanny is gone for an hour (shh don’t tell Mom), so Saet-byul goes home alone and walks into the big mess created by our sketchy trio. Saet-byul is scared of Dong-chan, and Dong-chan is confused at the presence of this child.
At Soo-hyun’s interview, it seems that the inmate (played by Jung Eun-pyo) is mentally disabled, but that doesn’t stop Soo-hyun from laying out the cold, hard facts: she shows him a picture of the survivor’s family and says that while he must miss his own child, the family of the child he killed misses their child too. It doesn’t seem that it’s the picture or her words that trigger a response, but something suddenly ticks and the inmate suddenly lurches at Soo-hyun violently.
As Soo-hyun and her coworker leave, they glimpse the arrival of the inmate’s mother, who has dedicated the past ten years to visiting her son in prison. Soo-hyun looks at her with sympathy, recognizing her difficult situation: one son a convicted murderer, the other son a witness of that murder.
Soo-hyun gets a call from her home phone, only the voice on the line is a mysterious threatening man demanding money. Panicked, she hurries home, and imagine her surprise when she walks in on her daughter having a jolly ol’ time with three complete strangers, rocking out to a boy band on TV.
Next thing we know, we’re at the police station with Dong-chan behind bars. The policeman and Saet-byul try to ease the situation — Dong-chan was looking for the previous home owner — but Soo-hyun is not letting this go. She’s got a lawyer husband, so she’s ready to press charges if necessary.
Saet-byul insists that she was having fun with Dong-chan, who didn’t scare her at all. Soo-hyun tells the cops to deal with this through the full legal channels, and as she’s dragged out by her mom, Saet-byul promises to save Dong-chan. She is so sweet, but for some reason, it makes me nervous…
Dong-chan complains to the officer, arguing that he even dressed up as the singer in Snake because the little girl asked him to, and fed her ramyun and pizza. He’s familiar with the policemen at the station because he previously worked there and tries to find an out, asking for pulled strings. Then the new team leader, HYUN WOO-JIN (Jung Kyeo-woon) walks in, and the two recognize each other. For whatever reason, Dong-chan is not happy to see him.
Driving up to the villa complex, Soo-hyun scolds the security guard for trying to chase away an innocent kid who hangs around outside the villa. The boy is mentally disabled but looks harmless, and Soo-hyun argues that he’s doing nothing wrong. She checks that he’s okay and urges him to go home.
But he sticks around, waiting until dark anyway. Having noticed a hole in his sock, Saet-byul sneaks out later to give the kid outside the villa some good socks from home. Just as she waves goodbye and leaves, the kid’s grandma come out the villa to take him home. The kid is KI YOUNG-GYU (Baro) and Grandma is the inmate’s mother, so that makes Young-gyu his son.
Dong-chan and his crew are released from jail with the help of team leader Woo-jin. But seeing that Dong-chan would rather go back in his cell than accept Woo-jin’s help, there’s clearly bad history between them.
Released from jail, Dong-chan is approached by his mother (Grandma!) who urges him to go to Young-gyu’s bazaar at school. However, Dong-chan flatly rejects her and tells her to never show up in front of him again. Wow, cold.
Saet-byul purposely misses her bus to English class because she clearly doesn’t enjoy it, and runs into Young-gyu outside the gate. It’s cute how freaked out he is that she missed her bus, and how he breaks into a wide grin when she notices his new socks. Saet-byul explains that she doesn’t want to go because she’s bad at English and nobody talks to her, and she feels stupid.
So instead, they enjoy lollipops on a bench. Saet-byul sees the notice for Young-gyu’s bazaar, and he says he didn’t go because they were supposed to bring friends and he doesn’t have any. Offering to be his friend, they go to the bazaar together.
When Dong-chan gets back home, a homeless grandpa (Shin Gu) is sleeping in front of his place and demands food — he’s starved for four days. Dong-chan gripes at Grandpa to get lost and heads inside, where he sets his own table and sits down to eat. But the thought of a dead old man in front of his house changes his mind and Dong-chan ends up feeding him his lunch. Afterward Grandpa demands coffee — not instant coffee but a grande caramel macchiato with lots of whipped cream. HA.
Soo-hyun is panicked when she discovers that Saet-byul isn’t where she’s supposed to be, but puts together clues when she finds Yong-gyu’s flyer in Saet-byul’s room. She arrives at the bazaar, and we see that Dong-chan also arrives and takes a look at his nephew’s handiwork in making figurines.
Soo-hyun scolds Saet-byul for playing hooky, and the little girl breaks down into a full tantrum, sobbing that she doesn’t want to go to English class. Soo-hyun warns Young-gyu to stop hanging around the girl, and he goes with a sad look back at Saet-byul. Saet-byul gets so worked up that she wets her pants, so mother and daughter find a restroom in a strange café called Destiny. (Secret Garden, anyone?)
It’s apparently a new café, and as an opening souvenir, the lady takes a picture for them. Then, as Soo-hyun goes up to pay, the café owner lady provides some sort of prophecy: “Sometime in the near future, you will lose what is most important to you. You will chased by a fate you can’t avoid, and such a fate will only end when one of two disappears. So don’t avoid it — fight it.”
The café lady gives one more warning to be wary of water, but Soo-hyun looks at her with disbelief and leaves. So strange, and so unsettling. As Soo-hyun drives home, we see that the presidential candidate who debated with Ji-hoon has been elected.
Jump to one year later — also fourteen days before the incident. Woo-jin is investigating a homicide and arrives on the scene of the crime, where a woman’s bloody body has been discovered in a dumpster.
Our family watches the news on the homicide from home. It’s Soo-hyun’s birthday, and when Saet-byul runs over to grab something, she trips and knocks over a glass vase, cutting her finger. Soo-hyun then burns her arm on the iron. Not getting good vibes for this day.
Then Soo-hyun is distracted from driving while admiring Saet-byul’s birthday gift and almost runs into a bicyclist. REALLY not getting good vibes.
At school, Saet-byul helps a friend find a dog-sitter for school hours since the dog isn’t allowed at school. They end up asking the man at the convenience store in front of the school to temporarily take care of the dog.
Now we see Dong-chan at work, and he runs a private investigative agency, appropriate for an ex-cop. He receives a new client asking for surveillance on her cheating husband, and he’s on it.
He gets the job done fairly quickly and delivers the surveillance pictures to his client at a bar. She insists on a drink, so he agrees to just one. And then is pressured to take another. He wakes up from a nightmare in the morning next to his client and instantly regrets everything.
Grandpa is there to greet Dong-chan when he’s back from his one-night stand and is eating away at a huge stash of food. Dong-chan swipes some of Grandpa’s food but quickly spits it out when he hears his mother brought it for him. Grandpa then makes an offer: if Dong-chan leads a better life and treats his mother well, he’ll give him ten billion won (approximately $10 million US). No luck, because Dong-chan is not warming up to his mother any time soon.
Nothing is new with our family, as Saet-byul has disappeared once again, leaving Soo-hyun to find clues in her room to locate her. Saet-byul ends up at the police station with Young-gyu, and this time Soo-hyun goes and slaps him across the face. Ouch all around: Young-gyu’s face, Saet-byul’s disappointment in Mom, and Soo-hyun gets the cold shoulder.
Soo-hyun is called into a parent-teacher conference, and is embarrassingly told that Saet-byul is sharing her answers on spelling tests and lowering her friend’s score. For Soo-hyun, hardcore practice is the only way to go. Poor Saet-byul.
The next day Soo-hyun gets into a small fender-bender in traffic, and curious Saet-byul runs out of the car to see what the larger accident ahead is about. Soo-hyun quickly follows and seems traumatized by what she sees. Luckily, Saet-byul is distracted by a bracelet she finds on the ground, and Soo-hyun quickly shields her from the gruesome accident scene, which we find out is yet another victim of our serial killer—three women in three days.
At work, Soo-hyun changes the focus of her investigative show to the Gangnam serial killer, figuring that this case is more urgent. During her research, she happens to see Woo-jin but quickly turns away, not wanting to be noticed. Ah, they know each other.
Soo-hyun picks up Saet-byul from school and relates everything to spelling, quizzing her on words in their conversation, making Saet-byul pouty. Even when Saet-byul spends the afternoon at the broadcast station with her, Soo-hyun runs through spelling tests with her. She’s gentler this time and smiles at her daughter’s effort. Baby steps.
Soo-hyun offers to run an errand in place of her coworker, and while stepping out the elevator she bumps into a man in a hat carrying boxes that cover his face. She drops her papers, and Woo-jin swoops in to help, here on business of his own. He asks if she has time, so coffee with an awkward conversation about old times ensues. It seems pretty clear that they’re old flames, and the mood grows even more awkward when he admits that he’s not married yet.
Soo-hyun asks her coworker to take Saet-byul down to meet her nanny in the parking lot, and the coworker complies. However, she receives an upsetting phone call and heads back inside right away, as Saet-byul runs towards her nanny in the distance.
The broadcast for Soo-hyun’s investigative show begins, where Woo-jin is making an appearance to explain details regarding the criminal. Annoyed that her phone keeps ringing during broadcast, Soo-hyun finally picks up — only to be notified that Saet-byul never met up with her nanny.
One of the phone bank workers suddenly signals furiously, having received an important call. The producers scramble to broadcast the call on the show, and the whole studio fills with a creepy voice — it’s a man, voice scrambled by software, insisting that he’s the Gangnam killer.
Then he tells someone else to talk, and a scared voice cries, “Mommy?” With horror, Soo-hyun instantly recognizes it: Saet-byul. Overcome with panic, she dashes to the phone to take the call, paying no heed to the fact that she’s disrupting the live broadcast, and shouts Saet-byul’s name. But the line goes dead.
COMMENTS
Wow, that was a lot. I’m surprised at how much got covered with just this one episode, but there are plenty of things left unanswered to look forward to in future episodes. All the characters are interconnected in some way, and I liked how well those connections were portrayed within the plot of the first episode. The whole episode was so fast-paced that it took some thinking and connecting the dots to get a grasp of the episode, but I’m not complaining because this pace is necessary for this type of suspense drama, and I’m liking it. The only thing I’m a little confused with is the one year jump we had, but maybe it was necessary? And if it wasn’t, oh well. Moving on.
This drama was so well-cast that I would have been greatly disappointed if the drama itself was just mediocre. Thankfully, it looks quite good, with the overall eerie tone well-balanced with heartwarming moments, which makes the impending doom and anxiety somewhat bearable. Kim Yoo-bin is always stellar in her dramas and never fails to melt my heart. She’s got this irresistible charm, and I hope we’ll get to see more of it even though she’s supposedly “gone.”
Jo Seung-woo has got a great complex character, and I hope we’ll be able to see more of it as the drama progresses. Personally, I haven’t seen much acting by him, and I basically just remember him from The Classic (which is a great movie, by the way, with a bunch of Korean culture parody material), but I’m really looking forward to his acting in God’s Gift. I was pleasantly surprised at how amused I was by his acting and his character. I hope that lightness will still be present as we delve further into the mystery of the 14 days.
Baro also does a great job as Young-gyu. Only his second drama, but I think he’s living up to the challenge. I remember him saying that he was worried that he may offend people with this role, so he made sure to research and get to know the mental disability he would be portraying. I really am appreciating the recent effort to incorporate mental disability into the drama and film culture in Korea. And while I do realize that these portrayals do not reflect all aspects of mental disability, the greater exposure definitely helps deal with the stigma it still carries today.
And of course, Lee Bo-young. Love her. She does a wonderful job portraying a protective, loving, and real mother-daughter relationship. The tough love through scolding, worrying, nagging, and quick forgiveness all seem very real. The last scene with her recognizing her daughter’s voice was so powerful and so real. It was a mother’s instinctive fear that you could see in her eyes, and you could almost feel the fear that she was feeling.
The precious girl is gone, Lee Bo-young has her men, and we’re ready to go. It better be eventful and productive 14 days.

I really enjoyed this first episode. It was a really intense yet captivating setup, and Lee Bo Young's doing a great job with acting as a concerned, loving mother.
The two main conflicting stories I thought were also interesting; one, the kidnap; two, Seung Woo's story. I'm interested in finding out how the two stories clash.
Great job recapping dramallama!!

All the new recappers have such unique names.
Another warm welcome, dramallama! I saw DB added both 3 days and 14 days to the in progress recapping series so I was waiting with anticipation.
This premise was already intriguing enough for me to check out(even if time travel isn't exactly a new concept), but the main draw for me here was Lee Bo Young. And i have no disappointments. I do not see her haughty, jaded lawyer character in IHYV, and instead I see that she has completely immersed herself into this mother role that is very natural and riveting(esp in 2nd episode). Her eye make up is beautiful, and so is her hair. She looks even more beautiful and young as she ages.
Jo Seung Woo is a film actor more than he is a dramaland actor so i had high expectations for him. He certainly did not disappoint. We have good performances all across the board. This is a plus.
As for the show, I like the tone we have going for us. It's dark and eery -- enough to give me the heebie jeebies and keep me on my toes.
The first episode was a good pace, while the second one revved up in full force. I liked the pilot and was pretty much hooked by the second.
This show is one of those shows where you sort of have to pay real good attention to the details they sprinkle throughout the episodes. There's lots of foreshadow and symbolism going on in this episode that i had to re-watch after the 2nd so that it would click.
Overall, im excited to see what this show has in store for us. It's a breath of fresh air to be able to watch a show without your typical k-drama cliches. This and three days will probably be my favs in the next few months (I predict).
THANKS for recap!

We are definitely seeing the best of Lee Boyoung's acting. She was flawless in I Hear Your Voice, but to take flawlessness into a whole other notch is just crazy. She's so immersed in this role. I think she captured the mother's role really well. That desperation to save her daughter was portrayed brilliantly. Absolutely breathtaking. GIVE HER 5000 DAESANGS, SHE IS CRAZY GOOD! :)

And that cliffhanger was one of the most nerve-wracking cliffhangers i've seen in a while. The pauses, the slow-mo, the music, the acting, the directing. That's how you do cliffhangers, people. Shivers up my spine.

Welcome, dramallama~ cute name. My first thoughts after watching this drama were similar to yours regarding the huge amount of content in the first ep. But I could follow it which tells me it that it was well written and the acting was good. I always appreciate when a lot of content isn't synonymous with being confusing, which happens pretty often in shows and movies, so I am looking forward to ep 2. Scary topic, though.

Lee Bo-young's acting is simply superb, not only in the dramatic I'd only seen her in IHYV before (she was great in that too), and kudos to her for choosing another great role in completely the opposite direction.

I was hoping this would be recapped. Thanks so much. And welcome dramallama!
I enjoyed the first two episodes a lot. The mother/daughter relationship was one of the more touching and realistic ones I've seen in dramaland in quite a while. I could feel Soo-hyun's worry and love for her daughter and Saet Byul is such a great little kid.
The whole episode was intense and nerve wracking to watch. From the summary of the drama you know the girl will die, but they did a great job keeping up suspense. Even if you knew it would happen, you never knew when and how the event will happen.
I'm not sure who to trust in this yet, so I'm going to trust nobody but Mom.

Sorry. Dramallama's sentences are fine; yours, like mine, tend to be long and run together. It is how our brains work, and most likely how we talk. If you want to see truly short sentences, read Hemingway.
I think Dramallama did a great job of recapping. Always love to read recaps because the recappers do a much better job of catching the nuance I always miss.

Thanks for the recap, dramallama! We are really being spoiled by the influx of new recappers, and hurrah for that.
Watched the first episode, liked it; watched the second episode, loved it. I am officially hooked on this show and in it for the long haul.
Lee Bo-young's acting is simply superb - not only in the dramatic moments at the TV station, but also in the little ones, such as her exasperation with her daughter's marks. Her character just seems so realistic, and I found myself immediately identifying with her. The mother-daughter relationship is portrayed wonderfully well: it's not perfect, but it is real. I'd only seen her in IHYV before (she was amazing in that too), and kudos to her for choosing another great role in completely the opposite direction.
I must also praise the directing: I'm no film buff, but for me the atmosphere and tone is just perfect, somehow elevating the entire drama.
My only niggle was at just how trusting Saet-byul is. It's done to an unrealistic extent, and sticks out in this grittier drama. It does contribute to an intense sense of foreboding - but honestly, she is such a muppet for a nine-year-old. Don't play with the home invaders, for goodness sake! However I predict that it will turn out to be key to the plot, and since this is the only hair out of place in an otherwise outstanding first two episodes, I can't really complain. (But I did anyway, ha.)
Can't wait for next week!

Holy Convenient Timing, Batman!
I literally JUST FINISHED watching the first two episodes of this show 30 seconds ago, and I check DB, and see this recap.
What got my attention most is how cinematic this show is. The cinematography, the gritty atmosphere, the kinetic pacing - it's SO unlike the typical drama. It felt like watching a tightly knit action thriller move, not a serial TV programme . It's refreshing and really different.
The characters are connected on the fringes, so I'm waiting to see how more closely their lives will intertwine. Especially between Lee Bo Young and Jo Seung Woo's characters as his is the most distant from the main plot thus far, and feels more like he's in his own separate show.
And we haven't even gotten to the time-traveling bit!
Welcome dramallama!

it was interesting, but i didn't get how all the characters are connected, it's like they are putting clues for her to find later, like the zoom in on the hair pin of the weird lady and the accident jewelry.. but at the same time if it's a serial killer isn't it usually a random victim?

There is no one method for serial killers - in fact most follow a pattern of some sort, very few - if any - are actually random. The only common factor is that in general they kill people that they don't know. There are some clues as to the connections near the end of ep2, and I suspect that a lot more will come out in 3 and 4.

Welcome to recapping dramallama! I like your name too :)
I've only seen Episode 1 of God's Gift but I'm so hooked already. The casting, the music, the cinematography, it's all very tight and sleek and really sets the tone perfectly. I've only seen Lee Bo Young in IHYV, but that was really all it took, I love her and I think she'll be even better in God's Gift. I'm also a fan of Baro, and I trust that he'll do the role justice, and be sensitive with his portrayal of a boy with a mental handicap.
After all the rom-coms we've had this year so far, I'm ready for some dark and twisty. Bring it on!

Glad to meet you, dramallama!
Oh my gosh, where do the casting directors find these cute little kids? So adorable!
And writer-nim did a great job working with our anticipation of Saet Byul's kidnapping. They know that we know she's gonna be kidnapped and they just totally played us all episode. Will it be now? Will it be him? Will it be because of Mom or nanny or Saet Byul herself? And when does our little tot get kidnapped? When Mom is with her former beau and some secret is about to be told to Writer Kim AND when Mom has done her best and both flaky semi-irresponsible Nanny and Saet Byul are on their best behavior. Well-done, writer-nim!
Gotta say I didn't expect so many storylines...which is pretty dumb of me. This is k-drama, after all.
Yes, I'm appreciating the way Korean TV is dealing with mental illness as well -- which makes me want to believe that inmate is not guilty...cause that would be problematical. Although they do have "good" mentally-disabled person so that balances stuff out.
Unsure why there was a year time jump. That would mean Saet Byul was friends all this time with Young-yu which would mean heroine hadn't been aware of the friendship all that time. Or am i missing something?
I totally love Lee Bo-young. She's one of the few women in k-drama whose name I remember.
I was watching every second of both episodes...which made me realize that I hadn't really been doing that with some other dramas. So this is what it feels like to be wholly interested in something?
Thanks so much for the recap, dramallama.

Thanks for the great recap, dramallama! I was going to skip this show, but am now tempted to watch it.
Based only on the recap, I'm already suspicious of the father. Where is he in all of this? For someone who should be central to the narrative, he's...well...not terribly central to the narrative. That makes me wonder if he's involved in the murders. Eep, I hope not! That would be a whole new level of twisted. Not like serial killing is ever *not* twisted.

About the dad -- he doesn't seem as distressed as i'd like him to be. The mom is stealing the show, as it's supposed to. Here we have a heroine that leads the show (which is not something we get everyday in k-drama).

I don't really see the father involved in the murder at all, not sure where that idea came from even after re-reading the recap. Just how distressed should he be - life has to go on, SHE is the one that I think is over-reacting. And she is the one that once said that she will hunt him down to the end of time, and not much later she is jumping in the lake and totally giving up.

Thank you for the recap! I really enjoyed the animation sequence in the beginning of the film. It helps to set the tone of this drama.
After the cafe owner gives her ominous warning to Soo-hyun, the camera focuses on her hair ornament. I assume that there must be some significance to this action. If I recall correctly, the Goddess of Night is wearing a hair ornament, correct? Is there a connection?

I wonder if the cafe even exists....it might return once more to set the spell in motion --unless God gives the time roll-back without needing cafe-owner as an intermediary. Hi Carole,
The way that the drama introduced the cafe is interesting in and of itself. It appears to be located amongst run-down buildings. I like your theory that the cafe might not actually be real.
I also agree that more than one life can be saved if Soo-hyun discovers who the murderer is (i.e. the three women he murdered plus her daughter). The obvious suspects may not be so obvious (if that makes any sense lol). This is definitely a drama that requires you to pay attention to what is said, not said, and shown.

My first theory (subject to change as we get more clues): I suspect the convenience store ahjussi whom the girls entrusted with Saet Byul's friend's dog. He looked shady and his shop is right across from their school.
Kim Yoo Bin is so cute. As is her and Baro's friendship. I aww'ed when Young Kyu watched in horror as the bus drove away without Saet Byul on board. Is Snake a heavy metal band? Their stage makeup doesn't look boyband-y to me, so is Saet Byul listening to rock music?

I'm glad to say that God's Gift is living up to the expectations -- especially since LBY is workin' it!!
The intro and the ending was creepy :/ But in a crime thriller, creepy is good = keeps you on the edge of your seat. At this point (way too early, obviously) it's hard to pinpoint who the killer is...but everyone seems a bit shady. I was kinda confused as to all the characters/relationships but I guess continuing eps will clarify all that.
I, too, agree that SB was way too trusting of strangers--which is likely one of the reasons why she was snatched :/ Also, wow, KYB has grown a lot since MoH...
And flower halbae Shin Gu as the homeless grandpa...hilarious how he asks for and gets food, only to then ask for the caramel macchiato! haha :)

Same here. I don't think he's poor - I rather believe he is there to keep an eye on Dong-chan, especially since he seemed to have cut all ties with his family and they want to know what he is up to. I suppose it all has to do with the crime he witnessed (He is that convict's brother, right?) - everything went downhill from there. He is so estranged from his mother that he even spitted out the soup when he found out it was from her.

Welcome aboard, dramallama! Enjoyed reading your recap and spot-on comments! You don't seem new to this at all ;).
Ohhh, I really liked this episode! So much foreshadowing, right from the start, with that eerie story, which by the way, it's "The Story of a Mother", written by Hans Christian Andersen. You can read it here: http://hca.gilead.org.il/sandhill.html
Also, the animated sequence kind of reminded me of the Master’s Sun intro, with animated Tae Gong Shil sitting on that rocking chair.
But was the mother telling that tale to her daughter (we hear a child's voice asking what happens next)? What a peculiar story choice for a child lol.
All that talk against death row will eventually backfire for the husband. I wouldn't be surprised if by some twist, he would actually end up killing or advocating for the killing of the person responsible for murdering his own daughter.
Also, there is something fishy about the moment the inmate snaps during the interview. He was staring at her feet and suddenly freaked out when she uncrossed her legs. Hmm, guess it’s more than just a foot fetish.
The shop they enter when Saet Byul needs to go to the bathroom had DESTINY written on a wall and of course, she ends up talking about destiny. Ha. My guess is that her daughter died, since she looked distracted when Saet Byul asked about that picture with the two of them. Water was a motif throughout the episode and the zoom on the hairpin has colored me intrigued.
I don’t know if it’s relevant, but after a year, they find that murdered woman in the Kang Nam district, which is the same where that police officer Kang went (the one Dong-chan asked about). Is that Kang the same Kang they mention near the end (Producer Kang), who is beating that woman and asking her for an abortion?
And, curiously enough, while they show that report on TV, the camera focuses on WATER. So daddy has more water in his cup…hmmmmm. Plus, Saet Byul drops her phone into the water. Also, it rained on the night the killer committed one of the crimes (as seen on the footage where they try to identify him). Probably, Saet Byul will also die by drowning, since when the story from the beginning is cut short, there is a child's shoe floating in the see and the clever editing makes it look as if the fisherman caught it, when in fact he spotted a different body floating there.
I am guessing the nightmare Dong-chan has is related to the crime he witnessed. It probably left him traumatized in one way or another. Maybe that’s why he can’t stand his mother, because she sides with his brother, having neglected him. Maybe that incident is what made him hostile towards Woo-Jin as well.
Han Ji Hoon’s passivity bothers me. I get that they want to show the contrast between him and Kim Soo Hyun – how easily she freaks out about everything and how relaxed he always seems to be. Practically, they are completely opposite. And while the mother is trying too hard to turn her child into a “perfect” one and is not as understanding as she should be, I feel they try to trick us into liking the father more. Saet Byul creeps me out. Sure, Soo Hyun doesn’t have the right approach towards her, overstressing the child (All work and no play makes Saet Byul a dull girl), but she doesn’t really make an effort to be good at something, does she? Ok, you don’t like English, you don’t like Math, you don’t like violin lessons, but is there anything you DO LIKE? All she seems...

All she seems concerned about is listening to the band Snake and wander around getting in touch with every random stranger she can possibly find. Soon Hyun is at least trying – they even study together, although she sometimes goes rough on her. I don’t particularly have sympathy towards children in general, my maternal instincts haven’t kicked in, but that kid is a headache. I do agree with others who said that the easy-goingness of the child is practically the only thing off about this so far, it just doesn’t ring that true to me.
I am also suspicious of that guy carrying boxes, who bumps into her when leaving the elevator. Could he be the Kang guy? Is he another guy? He definitely looked suspicious, as if he WANTED to get undercover with that cap and boxes.
Moreover, when Soo Hyun’s co-worker Me Na brings Saet Byul down to her aunt she receives a phone call from Kyng Soo (Kang Kyung Soo?), telling her he sent the file to writer Kim, it as if he purposely is trying to distract her, so that he can grab Saet Byul. And I could swear his voice is the same as the killer’s. Even altered as you hear it at the end, I found a striking resemblance between them. I believe the killer, Kyung Soo and the guy carrying the boxes is the same person.
There is something strange about the serial killer as well. Usually, they have a pattern. We could see that he targeted women from bars (karaoke bartender, drunk woman at bar), so why change now all of a sudden? I don’t really buy it that he got bored – or maybe I’m just looking too much into it. His line “Hey, Mr. President, the girl will be killed because of you guys”, clearly suggests that the choice isn’t random at all. Or does he have two patterns, if we assume that he was responsible for the kidnappings as well?
I also find it weird that the aunt didn’t notice the girl when she was heading right towards her. Even if, let’s say, she would have been kidnapped, she must have heard the screams. That ajusshi with the dog that you all mentioned caught my eye as well, but he had a different voice from the one making the phone call.
Apart from that, I wonder what’s Dong-chan’s beef with Woo-Jin. Woo-Jin seems like a nice guy (Not to mention that he is played by my boyfriend Jung Gyu-Woon hehehe), but he clearly has issues he didn’t manage to get over. I mean, he became a workaholic just because he couldn’t forget Soo Hyun for the past 10 years?? Talking about intense.
Overall, it’s a strong start. Most of the characters entered the stage and left (Dong-chan, Woo-Jin), since this episode was all about establishing the kind of relationship the mother has with the daughter. I still believe that out of Dong-chan and Woo-Jin, they could have created just one character, but we’ll see how their involvement with the case will pay off, especially since in Woo-Jin’s case, there still seem to be feelings involved. I felt it as well that more than worrying for the fluidity of the episode, they focused on placing clues here and there. The acting is strong, LBY gave a masterclass at the end. The moment the killer hangs up on her and her look of desperation while hearing the beep beep beep gave me chills.
Oh lol, I surpassed the commenting limit for this...and I was calling Woo-Jin intense.

That was my impression also - and since when did 8 year-olds, even in Korea, get all fanatical about some flower boy band? While liking the show a lot, I really think the kid's cuteness was overplayed. For me, the kid's role, personality, and actions are the one weak point in this show.

Good to know that it's not only me who feels that way towards her, since when it comes to kids, I might get subjective.
I felt it forced and overplayed as well. Oh I don't know about the flower boy band - after all, I was (embarrassingly) crazy about Backstreet Boys too when I was 6. But she is trying too hard to appear more mentally mature than she actually is and it doesn't work. She is supposed to be that misunderstood angel, while the mother is the root of all evil. Sorry, but no. Sadly, I guess we'll end up with the mother taking the entire blame for the child's behavior - that she yelled too much at her, that she didn't take enough care of her, that she subscribed her to more things than she could handle yadda yadda yadda.

A couple of notes - she never talked to the killer, the only time he called was on the TV show. All the other calls were from the ransom scammer.
As far as the serial killer - I am not so sure that he really IS a serial killer. One way to cover up a murder where motivation might raise suspicion is to kill a few more or less random people, and include the actual victim in their with the same clues as the other murders. On the other hand I don't really see what the motivation might be for killing a kid, unless it is revenge on the mother.

I agree the story is a peculiar choice for such a small child. I wonder if maybe we are hearing her voice from the future. As in, the ordeal is over and the child is saved so the mother tells the child this story which has somewhat become her own story/testimony.
Totally. This seems like a no-nonsense drama so I’m sure the writer wouldn't have us focus on the death-row talk if it wasn't integral to the plot and what has and will happen.
Agreed. It was weird seeing him lunge at her like that. Lol at the foot fetish comment.
I have the same feeling that her daughter died.
Good point. I didn't think of this. I may have to re-watch and see.
I didn't think about that! Could that mean that because daddy had more water daddy is a suspect? The shop owner did warn them about water. Could that mean that Saet Gyul’s dad has some involvement in her death?
True…I am suspect of everyone. I remember for a brief second thinking that maybe the mother of the alleged murderer was the killer and she placed the blame on the older son and made the younger son complicit and therefore, the younger son hates the mother….but this wouldn't add up so I let this theory disintegrate…Your thoughts seem more plausible.
Agreed. The Saet Byul is way too friendly to the point it seems unrealistic.
The box guy looked super suspect. He didn't even bother to help Soo Hyeon pick up the items she dropped after he bumped her.
Yes! I also thought that maybe the box guy have been the one who called the co-worker/aunty informing her that he delivered the goods? I am unsure about him being the killer. Again, I may have to re-watch the episodes again.
Good point…or it could be someone from the inside taking advantage of the situation and placing the blame on the killer who targeted women coming from the bars/clubs….but this insider would have to be someone close to the investigation unit to have known that there were 14 stabs instead of 13, therefore, I think there might be a 0.1% chance that this could even be the case…
True, but if the girl saw someone she knew then the nanny wouldn’t have noticed or heard anything because Saet Byul would have sneaked away.
True that, maybe Woo-Jin is the guy who spread rumors about Dong Chan (referencing character summaries placed on viki.com) which then forced Dong Chan to leave the force and create his PI team instead.
Agreed. This drama is off to a strong start.

I should have written the commentary with bullets, to make it easier to answer. Thank you for not going all “too long, didn’t read” on me hehehe.
1) I think I would have been a bit traumatized if my mother would have read me such stories. Like, mom, seriously do you want to depress me? LOL
IF she will be saved, the story could indeed become one about survival, in which she tells her all the things she went through (metaphorically speaking) to rescue her. But it’s a big IF – even though she gets a second chance, it doesn’t automatically mean that Saet Byul will survive. Going back in time might resolve their issues but not guarantee her safety.
2) We’ll see how it will fold out, but from what I’ve seen so far, the death-row talk seems to be a pivotal element to the story.
3) I want to believe that if daddy is involved, it’s indirectly and the girl is just collateral damage. Probably as a lawyer, he ended up rubbing people the wrong way. The shocker with the closest person to the victim being the actual killer is something which has been overplayed and I really hope they are cleverer than that here.
4) Ok, I didn’t have the mother on the suspect list, but she must have done something more than just siding with the brother, in order to make Dong Chan cut all ties with her, to the point that he doesn’t even want to have anything to do with Young-gyu either.
5) Yeah, luckily the mother draws me in, otherwise I wouldn’t be invested in this drama, since I don’t feel sympathetic towards Saet Byul at all. Despite sending her to a zillion courses, for what is worth, would she have listened to Soo Hyun’s advices, she might have been safe and sound. The friendlier Saet Byul tries to be, the more freaked out I am. Soo Hyun doesn’t always have the right approach, but she is trying, while the daughter wants to receive things without giving anything in exchange. Lowering her classmate’s score was beyond embarrassing LOL.
6) Not only did the box guy not help her, but I didn’t like this look of his >>> http://s12.postimg.org/6tyx2ddl9/vlcsnap_2014_03_06_10h58m45s250.png LOL. Also, those boxes are like a mask, they practically cover his entire face without making him look blatantly suspicious, because it's his job to do deliveries.
7) We’ll surely find out more about the dynamic between Woo-jin and Dong Chan in the next episodes and hopefully, we’ll see more than just the professional side of Woo-jin. I guess they didn’t fight over a chick, since Soo Hyun seems to have been Woo-jin’s only love (poor guy lol). Maybe it’s all about envy, with Woo-jin getting the recognition Dong Chan thought he himself deserved. Or maybe Woo-jin reported Dong Chan for misbehavior, causing him to be kicked out of the department....something to that extend.

It’s no big deal.
1. I also believe that that Soo Hyeon going back in time does not guarantee that Saet Byul will be saved.
3. I also believe that the father did it indirectly especially…SPOILER FOR EPISODE 2: considering how his reaction at the end of episode 2 was. How he stated that he had found the killer and was going to kill the killer…which also makes me wonder if it was Dong Chan since the gangsters that tied him up and threw him in the water (53:15 for a quick glimpse; see how they all have white collar shirts and crisp solid colored black suits) looked different from the gangsters that were chasing him in the beginning (50:56 for a group shot; see how they have a mix of suit designs, pin-strip, solid, etc. with random colored shirts like burgundy and jewelry like gold chains) because of that one guy who had lost his wife since she didn't find him fun in bed anymore. Could the father have sent those gangsters to throw Dong Chan into the water?
4. As weird as my theory may sound, I think I will keep it for now until I feel confident that it’s been disproved.
5. Carole McDonnell had commented saying some kids are like that in real life. It’s scary to think that it’s true but I guess it makes sense. A very social adult (which seems normal) could have been a very, very extroverted child.
7. Can’t wait!

Forgot to mention:
3. In the same vein as the father sending those gangsters to kill Dong Chan, I also believe Dong Chan is suspicious because on the day Saet Byul disappeared she was wearing a strawberry hair pin (49:46 epi 1) and the day when Dong Chan was snapping pictures of the naked cheating husband Dong Chan had pulled out from his back pocket a strawberry hair pin (39:09 epi 2)...coincidence much?

3. How ironic that the woman who threw that food at him, telling him he wouldn’t have the same stance on the death penalty issue if it would happen to his child was right – just after possibly finding out who the murderer was, he swore to kill him. Ji-hoon saying that executing a murderer means to avenge a crime with another crime, then the next thing you know…yeah :(. Oh, this is going to be messy.
Ohhh, about the gangsters, I thought they were different looking, but I didn’t dwell too much on the idea, since I was a bit sleepy when I watched the second episode. Thank you for providing the timing, here is the screencap reference: http://s24.postimg.org/f5nl9bj38/vlcsnap_2014_03_06_23h30m31s219.jpg
Besides, why go through all the trouble to take him PRECISELY there, where the child drowned? Since Soo Hyun got there by bus, I guess it’s a place outside the city. Yes, you might say that they want to kill him as far as possible, to avoid any suspicion, but is that spot really a coincidence?
And yes yes yes, I commented on that on the recap of the second episode, since I wanted to save some observations and not spill all the beans here on the first one ;). The strawberry pin can’t be a coincidence. It just can’t be.

Thanks Alexandra for the screen shot image! I'm happy that there are so many people who are commenting and providing their own theories or coming up with the same theories. I can't wait to see what's happens next. Although this guessing game is making me go crazy I'm still having fun.

I used to be a teacher and trust me ...that kid reminds me of many real kids I've seen. This is a kid whose aptitude is more on the personal social scale.. She might even have a little ADD thrown in. This is the kind of kid who would probably excel in social learning and would probably grow up to be someone who works with people. It's people that interest her, not things..not learning.

I've been so looking forward to this! I can't tell you how much I loved this first episode! It was so quick and so full that I could hardly take my eyes off the screen!
Will we jump forward fourteen days to when Saet-byul dies or will we experience those fourteen days, then jump backwards half-way through the shows run? I'm curious about that.
Thanks for the recap, dramallama!

That last scene slew me. At that moment I felt every emotion and was just transported into the scene. The shock. The horror. The realization that your child was kidnapped. Ouch....my heart broke.

Throughout the first episode I found several other interesting things and came up with a few questions:
1. I find the choice of this story for the intro to be interesting because in the full story (Buticut posted a link) the mother, after having met death, allows death to carry off her child (she lets her child die). I wonder if Saet Byul dies even though her mother goes back into the past.
2. Young-Gyu is the biological/adopted son of the alleged murderer. Could this mean that the older brother really is mentally disabled instead of faking it since Young-Gyu seems to be? But, shouldn't the investigation team have confirmed with the parents/friends of the family whether or not he really was disabled? Something feels off…Also, did anyone else find it interesting that Young-Gyu's father lunged on Soo Hyeon when she uncrossed her legs?
3. Dong Chan is the brother of the alleged murderer and also the only witness to the night of the murder. It is crazy how coincidental all of this is. The little girl so happens to meet the alleged murderer’s brother and befriends the alleged murderer’s son and her mother meets the whole family minus the grandfather.
4. It looks like Young-Gyu’s grandmother has easy access into the villa community where Saet Byul lives (I am treating everyone as a suspect).
5. SPOLIER INCLUDED WITHIN BULLET POINT #5 FOR THE MOVIE MOTHER STARRING WON BIN*** When Saet Byul skips English lessons to head over with Young-Gyu to his school we get to see a glimpse of Young-Gyu’s handiwork. I find it interesting that he is really good at carving things. I had focused on this because I thought maybe Young-Gyu could be a suspect (anyone seen the movie Mother with Won Bin?) but I totally forgot that Saet Byul dies from water not from be stabbed. I also had grown suspicious of Young-Gyu after Soo Hyeon slapped him. Isn't that what made Won Bin go off himself in the movie Mother?
6. When Saet Byul and Soo Hyeon visit the destiny store/shop did anyone find the owner lady to look like the lady in the photographs crying at the murder scene (photos shown when Soo Hyeon went to visit Young-Gyu’s father). Did anyone find the close-up to the destiny shop owner’s hair ornament intriguing? Speaking of the shop owner, did anyone fully grasp what the lady meant when she stated that, “one of the two must go”?
7. At one point while Dong Chan is sleeping we see into his nightmare and see a part of the murder taking place, however, the profile of the actual murderer and the alleged murderer seem different. The alleged murderer is short, stock, and a bit pudgy while the actual murderer seems to be tall and lean….and almost has the same physique as Dong Chan himself. Does anyone else think that maybe Dong Chan suffers from schizophrenia and bipolarity which come on when he drinks? The first time we see him drink is while at a club and then the next morning he awakes in bed with the woman he met but we also hear of a murder that took place at a club too. The next time he drinks is when he misses out on being a millionaire. He picks a fight with a few guys but somehow he wakes up at his house with only a few scratches and a black-eye? How was that possible? He didn't seem like much of a fighter and he was uncoordinated from having drunk beforehand. Those guys seemed ruthless too so I highly doubt that they would let Dong Chan go without beating him up pretty badly. Maybe he’s a murderer but doesn't know it.
8. I found it...

8. I found it interesting how they show us the time clock before the Gangnam Serial Killer special happens. Maybe Saet Byul was kidnapped between 18:59:59 and 19:00:00.
9. Here's a random theory, instead of being kidnapped, maybe Saet Byul had seen someone she knew, like Young-Gyu or Young-Gyu’s grandmother and went with them instead. Maybe (IF the grandmother is the culprit) the grandmother chose Saet Byul because she was easy to access (friends with her grandson) to threaten the President for wanting to enforce the death penalty. Her motive would be to protect her son who's on death-row. Although, there is a very slim chance this is true (she would have had to been able to kill 3 other people first) I found it something to consider.

1. I had the same thought. In the story, the mother practically lets her child go, because she realizes that God’s will is above her own and she accepts that. Going back into the past might not necessarily help her rescue her daughter, but come to grips with it instead. Although, on the other hand, we might see this second chance she receives as God’s will as well.
2. I highly doubt the older brother is faking his mental illness, because he sticks to it even when no one is around. A faker lets go off that mask when no one is watching. There is definitely something off about the whole situation and I noticed the uncrossing scene as well.
3. Haha, I know, but in k-dramaland, everybody knows everybody.
4. We are such a bunch of skeptics hehehe
5. – 6. I figured her daughter died, since she was so saddened by the picture, but I forgot about the other one snatched by Soo Hyeon. I joined two screencaps and you might be onto something: http://s12.postimg.org/mm1abehos/vlcsnap_2014_03_06_07h50m20s109.jpg.
I believe her entire speech revolves around destiny and how you can’t escape it. As far as WHY one of the two must go, it beats me. I wonder though if the hair ornament has something to do with the bracelet which seemed to have an angel carved on it, grabbed by Saet-byul at that crime scene.

Thanks for responding Buticut.
2. Very true. Even in I Hear Your Voice, Min Joon-Kook, let his true intentions show in private.
3. LOL
5 -6: I think it's neat how you were able to do the side-by-side screen capture. Regarding the hair ornament and the bracelet, I didn't even think about them having a connection. I went back to check (Hair Ornament: 29:53 and Bracelet: 47:33). No matter how much I turn my screen I can't really tell what the image on the bracelet is, however, if I were to give it a guess I would agree that it looks like a baby angel. If I let my imagination run further, it looks like the angel is holding something and stabbing something with the item it's holding. What it seems to be holding, although this may be a far stretch, seems to be something that resembles the lady's hair ornament (see how it's long and it has this bulky attachment which could be seen as the dangling beads in the lady's ornament?). I have no idea what it's stabbing though.
Spoiler alert***
7. Ah yes, he does have an alibi. He was arrested I can't wait to figure out what happens when he blacks out. Like you said, the camera did zoom in onto the blood on his shirt as if it wasn't his, as if we, the viewers, should be wary of him. Also, I can't believe I included episode 2 into episode 1. How embarrassing, I was focused on posting my thoughts that I forgot to clearly mark off where my thoughts for episode 1 ended and where episode 2 began.
I'm eagerly waiting for episode 3- 4. Can't wait to see what happens next!

You're welcome :). I love commenting, although I often get too caught up and forget I should put an end to it LOL.
5 -6: Sometimes, I don't know if I am seeing things and over analyzing insignificant details or if there is actually something there LOL. I believe every zoom is for a reason. The bracelet thing looks like an angel with a scepter of sorts. It might be a symbol, it might be...nothing.

The little girl is so annoying! I can see why she would be naive/dumb enough to trust the wrong person & end up dead. Come on kid! Maybe it was just over done with her doing EVERYTHING wrong. Talking to every shady stranger possible, leaving home without telling her parents, being a horrible student, & throwing a massive tantrum. I am glad we wont be seeing much more of that character (hopefully)!

I knew the daughter would be in danger based on the premise. This episode had me on the edge of my seat the whole time because I was waiting for the daughter to get hurt and they had so many red herrings. Is it going to be the house break-in, the multiple times she skipped school to be with Baro, the time the vase fell on her or the accident site.
Great Episode.

I thought I was the only one that found her annoying. You obviously can't expect an 8 year old to be the most world-wise person in the world, this kid is just dumb. I think they overplayed the cuteness, perhaps because the kid is not really a major player, but just part of the setup for the rest of the plot.
