First teasers for Uhm Jung-hwa’s new rom-com
by girlfriday
It’s raining noona romances in dramaland this year, and for some reason Mondays and Tuesdays on cable seems to be the fixed battleground. Here’s the next one for cable network tvN, a romantic comedy called Witch’s Romance starring Uhm Jung-hwa (Laws of Attraction) and Park Seo-joon (Warm Words). The production has released the first teasers and posters for the show, ranging from comic (copy machine kisses) to sultry (noona-killer kisses). It looks like the tone will be light and fluffy overall, but who knows; teasers have been known to lie, those tricksters.
The workplace rom-com is a remake of the 2009 Taiwanese drama Queen of No Marriage, about an older woman and younger man, though this adaptation will widen the age gap. I’m just going to take a stab and say the heroine in this one is thirty-nine, given how many times I see that number on the posters. It’s being called a life rehab romance, between a snobby heroine and a younger man who suddenly enters her life and spins it into chaos.
Directing is PD Lee Jung-hyo of Heartless City and I Need Romance 2012. The show will have two writers, Ban Ki-ri who was the second writer credited on tvN’s ghost drama Who Are You, and a newbie writer with no credits. Co-starring are Han Jae-seok (Oohlala Spouses) and Jung Yeon-joo (Aurora Princess) as the second leads.
Witch’s Romance premieres April 14.

Loved Uhm in Get Karl, Oh Soo Jung! (go watch it, folks!) I last saw Park in Shut Up Family playing a nice jock. All of a sudden now he's lead! Wow.

Yes! Get Karl is one of my favorite dramas. It's such a fluffy rom-com but it gets you right in that spot. ^__^ Uhm Jung-hwa is always a winner for me. Also, Sung Dong-il's supporting character as Karl's (Oh Ji-ho) manager cracked my shit up so many times.
These teasers are too damn short! I need more.

It's light fluffy and silly but somehow I love it. I think the main reason is because I like the uniqueness of UJH's character and the doormat-like character of Oh Ji Ho. In their own weird way they are perfect for each other.

Looks cute, and it helps that I'm a sucker for noona romance so I will surely check this out.
P.s- I know this is off point but I just want to ask if you are going to recap secret love affair.

Re: SLA isn't your ave noona romance!
I clicked on it by accident. I didn't like the premise, which sounded like some kind of Indecent Proposal. But by the end of ep 1, it had me line hook and sinker. It doesn't feel like a KD at all; much more like a movie, and an art film at that. It might be too slow for the taste of many, esp. if they are looking for a fluffy noona rom-com, which it certainly isn't.
Let's Eat is food porn; this is (classical) music porn. Kim HA looks positively orgasmic listening to him play; while he glows in concentrated effort. But why does it make me asso it w Hiroshima mon Amore? What directing and execution!
Forgive me. Not trolling. It's not everyone's cup of tea. I'm bursting w excitement for SLA, but has no where to let it out. Bow!

Yay! I love Uhm Jung Hwa and I'm SO excited for this. I'm so glad it's on TvN because that means it can be saucy like in that second teaser. The male lead is cute too. I just hope she gets to look absolutely fabulous throughout. And hopefully it will be light and adorable and will fill the hole in my heart that Let's Eat is leaving. Thank you for the update!

I liked My Queen. They derail the lead female character a bit, and her first love arc is a bit wtf, but over all I enjoyed the characters journey in the drama. Not jazzed that the driven and dedicated career woman character from My Queen translates to a "witch" in a Korean version.

Not really getting/liking the whole witch thang either. I am sincerely hoping this isn't going to be yet another highly-successful-and-driven-career-woman-with-deep-insecurities-tamed-by-hot-young-guy-with-all-the-answers drama.
The trope that women cannot have both great careers and fulfilling personal lives until they are schooled by some love god is getting really, really old. The only way to watch a drama like this is to skip all of the prosy lectures and the "cute" scenes where the uppity career woman gets what is coming to her and fast forward straight to the kiss scenes.

Yes, that is a good point about the driven career women or older woman with dreams having to be guided by a man thing, eh. There is a not so subtle message, isn't there?
The plot device was okay with IHYV, it was not over the top and somewhat balanced in that it was more than that. INR3 made me want to barf.
I'd rather this type of storyline be more about hormones (FBRS) or realizing that someone fits your life and fulfills your needs (Sun-mi and Puppy in CWL).
My Queen Taiwan, I never saw her as bitchy, or anything but driven, and I thought they did a good job with that her issues with the male lead were about the age difference in that where they were in life, which are valid questions anyone should consider when getting involved in a relationship.

Agreed! I watched the Taiwanese original and it did make the female character out to be a little bitchy sometimes.

I am always up for noona romances...they are just more romantic to me ♡ even though I am still not in the noona category as such (25 years old), because if I start having flings with boys 10 years younger than me, then I will probably end up in the pedophile category HA, but still these dramas pull at my heart strings in the right way!!

I'm only seen her in Seducing Mr Perfect but don't know the hero. I, for one, am looking forward to MORE noona romances because...I'm a noona myself, LOL!
Fashion side note: has anyone noticed that the honeycomb/piqué (?) texture of his suit echoes the print of her dress ? How Cool! It's more noticeable in the second teaser "come here, boy!" scene (yes, this noona sews too!)

I dont understand why they have to remake My Queen. There are already so many noona dongseng romance in Kdrama, you think by now there will be a newer trend. Also, Ethan Ruan and Cheryl Yang had been great in their roles I can't imagine anyone else filling in their shoes.

I've never seen My Queen but I've read it's a good watch. Maybe I'll watch it some time down the line, I've been meaning to...
Lol, my To-Watch List is just getting longer and longer and not shorter and shorter as I go along XD Everything coming out this year just seems so good! It makes me wonder what happened last year--were writers just warming up for this year? Haha
The teasers and posters look cute. Would love to give this a shot~

Not more noona romances. Why can't there be women romancing men in the appropriate age groups? I'm yet to come across a noona romance that didn't make me want to smack someone.

I have Nothing against noonas, it's just that I don't like the kind of messages I get from some noona romances, like the women are teetering on the brink of menopause and they need some young guy to make them question all the decisions they've made all in the name of love. I almost always see them feeling insecure and such when the young men start to show interest in them.

You mean the same insecurities almost every drama female lead exhibits when the male characters shows interest? That's definitely not an age thing.

It is interesting reading criticism of this set-up when it is obviously extremely popular out there in the there.
Keep this in mind: As we women age and physically fade and dry up like so many leaves in the Fall, we fear that men won't be attracted to us any more. It is a general insecurity among moms that we become invisible to the public. Anyone holding a baby knows that. LOL
There's no use crying about it, that's the way it goes. And you can fight it with diet, exercise, and cosmetic surgery all you want, but gravity will have its way.
Whattaya do about it? Sulk? Drink? Bitch? Sure, those are options. I like to escape to my romcoms, though.
Where a 39 year old woman still has the looks and charisma to attract a young stud. Where a 39 year old former pianist has the goods to attract a young hot pianist. (LORD LORD That's going to be good.)
I am a good mother, good at my job and I have a husband. Overall, I live happy in my 40+ year-old body. I will NEVER EVER attract Yoo Ah In. Even in my youthest youth I would never have attracted PIE or Ethan Ruan. But these ladies can, and that makes me happy, up here in my fantasy tower of drama.

PREACH.
One of the major reasons I switched from American to Korean TV is because you can tell it's ajummas that control the remote. It's amazing how different it feels when media is actually responsive to my escapism/fantasies/etc.

Ahh, so many dramas and not enough time t___t Want to watch this one mostly for Park Seo-joon. He was one the best parts of Warm Words. I
Kinda off topic but are Emergency Couple and Bride of the Century not prime-time dramas? I know Bride of the Century was moved to an 11PM slot Friday/Sat but I thought Emergency Couple was still kind of prime-time. Is that why they're not included on the sidebar? Just wondering haha

Sorry, when the woman is obviously 40 (Uhm Jung Hwa – terrific actress, but she's 44 now) and the guy is like 22, it's far beyond a 'noona' romance. More like the "Ahjumma and the 'Ai' " romance. And that goes even for the competing drama 'Secret Love Affair.'
