You From Another Star: Episode 19

Way to tug the heart and draw out the tears. While I would say the overall trajectory of this episode is rather expected, the drama drops a few surprises in our laps, namely in showing us just exactly how deep the love runs. Min-joon certainly takes the adage Actions speak louder than words to extremes, even if his reticence to speak the words balances it out by hitting the other extreme. (Actions are awesome, yes, but would a word or two once in a while kill ya?)

RECAP: NINETEENTH RECORD

In Joseon times, Min-joon receives a visitor: It’s Ryu Seung-ryong, playing Heo Kyun! He’s the famed writer of The Chronicles of Hong Gil-dong and Min-jono’s friend (and also the one who gifted Min-joon with that vase, I’m now recalling, that Song-yi smashed while “cleaning.”)

Heo Kyun explains that he is writing a novel about a hero who uses his powers to help the commoners, which is why he’s here to see Min-joon. He has heard of Min-joon possessing powers and wishes to see it for himself in order to write of it.

Min-joon smiles and vanishes before his eyes, and Heo Kyun freaks out. Min-joon reappears behind him, and Heo Kyun gapes in astonishment, eager to know what kind of wizardry he practices.

Min-joon corrects him, saying that he doesn’t practice wizardry, nor is he like his novel hero because he doesn’t use his powers to help people—he tried that, and it only made him a monster in their eyes. Heo Kyun asks if he would reveal himself to save someone he loves, and Min-joon just says that alas, there’s nobody he loves so wholly. Furthermore, since he will one day return home, he isn’t foolish enough to give anybody his heart. Famous last words.

Song-yi sobs over Min-joon’s journal, reading his prediction about dying, and then goes to Lawyer Jang. They both know she knows the truth but she still calls him “Father” (as in, Min-joon’s), saying that Min-joon wrote that Lawyer Jang was like a father to him. She’s still struggling to accept the whole alien concept and shares what she read, that he’ll die if he doesn’t return home.

Lawyer Jang explains that Min-joon has changed a lot already—he used to be impervious to hot and cold, and his powers are waning. She asks why he would decide to stay despite facing death, and Lawyer Jang answers simply that he loves her that much. He adds, “Much earlier than when you began to like him, he cared for you very much. And he cares for you much more than you imagine. He didn’t want to hurt you so he tried hard not to let things come to this. I tried to stop him many times, but what could I do? He would lay down his life to be with you.”

Min-joon responds to Hwi-kyung’s call by arriving at his hotel door, and when it goes unanswered, he passes through it to find Hwi-kyung very drunk. He asks Min-joon what the nature of his powers are, which allow him to perform miraculous feats and win the heart that Hwi-kyung has been unable to win. “You have it all,” he says, tears in his eyes. “I envy you.”

Min-joon replies, “I envy you.” Hwi-kyung laughs bitterly, then states that his blood relation tried to kill the woman he loves, and did kill his brother. Recalling that he brought his eldest brother the tainted juice, Hwi-kyung breaks down, “I… with my own hands… I gave that to him.” Worse yet, if the truth comes out, his whole family will be ruined.

Min-joon says that he understands, but can’t let the crime go. Furthermore, Jae-kyung probably has it in for Hwi-kyung now, and that puts Song-yi at risk too. Hwi-kyung says this is why he called Min-joon, and asks what he should do.

Min-joon returns home to a note from Song-yi saying that she’s tired and will see him tomorrow. Next door, Song-yi thinks of Lawyer Jang’s words about Min-joon’s love for her and runs the faucet to muffle the sound of her crying.

Jae-kyung receives a call from a mysterious number, and the voice on the other end stops him short: It’s the recording of his hyung, begging for his mercy all those years ago. Hwi-kyung reveals himself as the caller, and immediately Jae-kyung turns on his sweet-talking voice and offers to explain.

He arrives shortly thereafter at Hwi-kyung’s hotel room, where Hwi-kyung is staggering and unfocused. Drunk, or faking? (Please oh please let this be a fakeout.)

Either way, Jae-kyung smirks and figures that his pesky ex must have supplied that recording. Hwi-kyung looks devastated as he asks how many people Jae-kyung has killed, including their brother and Yura.

Meanwhile, the ex-wife is beside herself with worry—she tells Se-mi that she may have told Hwi-kyung something she shouldn’t have, and is now worried for his safety. That’s enough to get Se-mi upset, and she tries to call.

Jae-kyung pats his brother’s head gently, which by the way is far creepier than threatening him with dire words, and says that he bears no grudge against him. If Hwi-kyung cooperates, he won’t even do anything to him. Gee, how generous.

Then Jae-kyung pulls out his dart gun and levels it at Hwi-kyung, demanding the recording. If Little Bro doesn’t play nice, he’ll become a tragic story of a chaebol who got drunk and committed suicide. Jae-kyung was shrewd enough (er, evil enough, I guess) to purchase the gun in Hwi-kyung’s name, and is ready to play the part of a grieving hyung who rushed his brother to the hospital, too late to save him.

Just then the gun disappears from his grasp, and when he turns he finds it being leveled at his own face, in Min-joon’s hand. (If you look closely, I’m pretty sure there’s an eye-roll from Jae-kyung, as if to say, You again?!) Now Hwi-kyung faces his brother, sober and serious, and tells him to surrender himself. Jae-kyung laughs at the thought and warns Min-joon that he’s making a big mistake, but Min-joon just takes him by the collar and vanishes with him.

They reappear in an elevator that takes them to the lobby, where Seok is waiting to make the arrest. Jae-kyung orders his lawyer called, but Seok informs him that the hotel room was outfitted with a camera. Jae-kyung smoothly starts covering his ass, saying he was just putting a little fear into his kid brother and meant nothing, arguing that there’s no basis for the murder claims.

That’s when Detective Park appears with Killer Secretary in custody (booyah!), nabbed for sabotaging the stunt wire. That’s enough to shut Jae-kyung up for now, though he keeps a smile on his face as he’s escorted out in handcuffs. A mob of reporters is on hand to hurl questions, and Jae-kyung praises Hwi-kyung for thinking to call the press.

Jae-kyung says he never meant to use the dart gun on Hwi-kyung… but had prepared something else as insurance. Augggghhh, now this I believe, and it’s something our good guys hadn’t anticipated. As Jae-kyung names a wine—Song-yi’s favorite—we see her receiving a message from “Min-joon” with flowers and a date request for lunch. Song-yi makes it to the restaurant and waits, while a waiter surreptitiously swipes her cell phone. Wine is poured…

Min-joon shoves Jae-kyung against a wall and camera flashes erupt. Jae-kyung taunts him to use his skills to save Song-yi, laughing that there are too many people watching. Min-joon clenches his jaw but throws Jae-kyung into the crowd of reporters, then freezes time—just long enough to disappear.

Jae-kyung says smugly that Min-joon won’t be able to save her anyway, at which Hwi-kyung launches himself at his brother and punches him in the face, shouting, “Are you even human? I’m going to kill you!”

Min-joon appears in the restaurant and crashes onto a table, and finds Song-yi sitting nearby. She’s sluggish and her wineglass is empty, and moments later she keels over into Min-joon’s arms. The other diners recognize her and start snapping photos, but a second later Min-joon and Song-yi are gone.

Min-joon carries her to the emergency room and starts barking orders at nurses, and when they don’t move quickly enough he starts grabbing supplies. Heo Kyun’s statements were prescient after all, because at this point Min-joon doesn’t even care about hiding his powers, summoning equipment and blockading the bed with medical carts.

The news hits the internet fast, and Se-mi, Lawyer Jang, and Yoon-jae all read the headlines, which describe Song-yi’s restaurant disappearing act and arrival in the emergency room. Not one to miss a meta joke opportunity, the drama makes sure to have Mom note that Song-yi sure is going to the hospital a lot. Ha.

By now reporters have found their way to the hospital too, but Min-joon is fixated completely on Song-yi as she stirs awake. She says that there are too many people, asking to go someplace quiet, and Min-joon agrees. He gathers her in his arms, and with cameras clicking away, he vanishes right before their eyes.

They reappear on a garden path lined with flowers, and Min-joon says with satisfaction that they made it—he’s never gone this far before. He says nobody will be able to find them, since they’re the only people here. Looking around, Song-yi asks if they’re on his planet, and he nods. Wait, what?

Song-yi takes a few hesitant steps, then says excitedly that she can breathe and not levitate. Min-joon scoffs, “Do you even know how far an alien planet would be?” HA, he was pulling her leg. He asks what she’d do if they were on his planet, and she answers simply that she’d find a way to survive somehow. (For good measure, she adds that she’d be really popular on his planet with her looks.)

It turns out that they’re at the very top of a mountainous island; there are buildings nearby, but Min-joon assures her that they’re alone and Song-yi exults, shouting into the wind. She yells, “I’m Chun Song-yi! Try and catch me!” Holding Min-joon, she continues: “He’s an alien! Try catching him too!”

He smiles hugely, and it’s so sweet to see them looking so happy. The smile fades a bit as she says they’re going to live together here, just the two of them. She prods him to say something too, and he gamely gives it a go: “We’re going to live well, just the two of us!”

Song-yi suggests taking a photo together, so they snap a sel-ca on his phone. Going on a walk, she notices an interesting tree duo with intertwined branches and trunks, which he explains as two different species growing together as one. She envies them for being able to be together till death, and requests another photo in front of the trees.

She says that while they’re here, they should pretend that time flows differently—that she’s not a famous actress, and he’s not an alien in hiding. “While we’re here, let’s not care about the outside world.”

He agrees, and she tells him, “I love you. If you say you want to live on this star, I want to live here too. And if you say you have to go to another star, I want to follow you there—that’s how much I love you.”

Raising a hand to his face, she says, “Even though I’m anxious that you’ll disappear right away, and even though I’d sell my soul for the time we could be together, if only we could stop time forever… and even though sometimes these feelings are too hard for me and I might wish I hadn’t met you… still, even if I could turn time back, I would meet you again, and I would bicker with you, and I would fall for you, and I would love you.”

Min-joon wipes her tears and says, “Sure.”

She teases him about his very unromantic reply, but as she’s outlining how he ought to be replying, Min-joon kisses her. (Annnnnnd two seconds later Song-yi’s dragging his staggering body along again. Pwahahaha. That will never not be funny.)

Back in Seoul, the gossip reaches a fever pitch and Song-yi dominates the real-time internet queries. Ex-manager Bum gushes about how public opinion is swinging upward for Song-yi now that Jae-kyung has been named as the culprit in Yura’s death. Piling on top of the sympathy for Song-yi being wrongfully suspected, there’s the wild interest in her dating someone with superpowers, which only adds to her mystique.

CEO Ahn takes this all in without much reaction until he hears that the CF offers are pouring in from people who assume she’s still their client. Suddenly he’s all interest and concern, and says that he felt bad for her all along

Lawyer Jang watches the news reports about the disappearing couple, who not only have dozens of eyewitnesses but also CCTV footage to fuel speculation of Min-joon’s alien/magic/superpower abilities. Lawyer Jang sighs and wonders, “Are you satisfied now? Are you happy?”

Min-joon and Song-yi hole up in what I’m going to assume is an empty guest house, napping together until Min-joon’s kiss-induced fever subsides. She notices that his recovery was quicker today, and suggests another photo. Aw, each time she takes one it’s like a tiny dagger in my heart—she’s stocking up for the day he’s not here.

While they eat together, Song-yi asks out of the blue, “How many children should we have?” He chokes on his food, but thinks it over: “Seven?” She thinks that’s a lot, but he says back in ye olden days, that was common. She asks, “Then four daughters and three sons?” Min-joon replies, “Seven daughters.” Awww. (Sons are too noisy, he says, but he’d be fine if they popped one out anyway.)

Song-yi spins a fantasy scenario of raising their family of nine, moving to their own house with a yard, maybe getting dogs. He smiles and agrees that that’d be nice. Though when Song-yi prods him to say I love you because he’s never said so in words, he just tells her to eat up. Heh.

Jae-kyung sits in jail, stewing. Lucky for him, he has his powerful father on his side, who gets to work doing everything to get Jae-kyung off the hook. We can see where Jae-kyung got his Machiavellian tendencies, because Dad’s first words to Hwi-kyung are to snap that pulling this stunt isn’t going to earn him hyung’s place in the company. In Dad’s eyes, Jae-kyung is the only one capable of doing big work, and Hwi-kyung’s just some feckless loser.

Hwi-kyung tells his father that he doesn’t want any of that, and all he wants is to ask Dad not to cover up for Jae-kyung, who has committed countless crimes, including attempting to kill Song-yi today. Dad bellows, “Talk sense! Why would your brother do something like that when he has everything?!”

At that, Hwi-kyung pours his father a glass of the wine he has carried in, explaining that this is what Jae-kyung gave to Song-yi today. “I will drink it,” he says. “When I do, then please believe me.” He calls his brother a monster who would do whatever it takes to achieve his aims, and grabs the wine to drink.

At that, Dad leaps up and snatches the glass away, throwing it to the ground. Hmm, so he’s not really in the dark about Jae-kyung’s evil, is he? But then he says that if Jae-kyung did in fact do something to Song-yi, she probably did something to deserve it. Groaaaan. Facepalm. Headdesk.

And then, Eldest Hyung’s voice sounds via the recorder, pleading, “Save me.” Hwi-kyung kneels before his father and apologizes, then plays the full recording. Dad listens as Jae-kyung describes the effects of his drug, and how Jae-kyung had been thinking of this for a long time. The truth finally (finally) lands for Dad.

Song-yi’s family gathers in concern over her disappearance, unable to get a hold of her by phone. Mom is by far the most upset, assuming Min-joon’s up to no good, but Yoon-jae and Dad both speak up in his defense.

Min-joon and Song-yi walk along the beach at night, where she looks up at the sky and wonders where his planet is. They settle down in front of a bonfire, and she suggests coming here every summer, with their seven children and dogs. He agrees readily, and she says they’ll both have to work hard to support such a huge family. She asks for him to promise, and he does.

All this future talk has such a sad tinge, particularly when Song-yi asks him to sing a song for her—”One that will make me think of you in the future. One that will make you think of me. One that we can treasure in our memories for a long, long time.”

He starts singing (“Promise” by Im Byung-soo):

The stars are especially bright tonight
When this time is over,
words of leaving you make me sad
The more this night passes
ah, our happy time,
our promises whisper in my ear
and make me sad
It’s not your fault
I feel like crying
I dreamt a blue dream

She thanks him for the song, and then he gets down on his knee to face her. He says, “I can’t tell you everything you want to hear, but I want to be together with you in the future that you describe.” He takes out the ring, and at her request he slides it on her finger.

She tells him that she always wanted to receive “an immature proposal” like this. “I’m perfectly happy,” she says, crying.

Then she calls his name, saying, “My beloved Do Min-joon. It’s time for us to wake up from this dream. For my sake, exist somewhere. For me, don’t die. Exist somewhere. What I’m saying is, go. To where you were.”

EPILOGUE

Heo Kyun wraps up his visit with Min-joon, thanking him for his time and saying that it was an invaluable help to his writing. He requests permission to say one last thing: that while he has no powers of premonition, he believes that Min-joon will meet a woman and fall in love with her. And for her, he will be able to throw everything away.

Min-joon listens skeptically, but Heo Kyun explains that it’s to those who disdain love or disbelieve it who are hit hardest by it.

COMMENTS

Aw, we all knew this day was coming, right? The trajectory of this episode fell along expected lines, with one surprise: Wowsa, Min-joon, you really went all-out there with the alien reveal, huh? I loved how frantic he got, that he would bare himself to the world without second thought. It wasn’t even a calculated risk, him measuring his identity against Song-yi’s life—it was an in-the-moment decision he made when he found that his identity no longer meant anything to him if the trade-off were Song-yi’s safety.

Plus, I have to be grateful that the show presented this impending separation in this lovely bittersweet way, rather than going for full-on noble idiocy. Min-joon did indulge in a bit of that, but I love how Song-yi reacts to things (and just love her as a character, period) in taking her moment to feel sad, then tackling the problem head-on. For instance, I love her response to the question of what she’d do if she found herself on his planet: Well, she’d find a way to survive. (I’m not comparing that response to Min-joon’s since he’s dealing with a reality and she a hypothetical, but it speaks to her character in an admirable way.)

This kind of reaction to the dilemma is actually sensible enough that I’d argue that it doesn’t qualify for noble idiocy—that’s when you find out something, then go out of your way to hide it, act unilaterally (often “for their own good”), and lead both of you to misery. This, on the other hand, is poignant and thought out, a measured response to a heart-rending dilemma. Exist somewhere. That’s all she needs. *tear*

I’m glad that Jae-kyung’s been locked up and revealed for who he is, because I look forward to next week’s episodes as wrap-ups to the characters we love and don’t want to spend any extra time on inevitable plot stuff. The recent turns have given Hwi-kyung a lovely chance to shine as a good, decent person, and while he remains lovelorn for Song-yi, at least he had a purpose in this story that went beyond mere second lead pawn.

Now, the question is: Whose will is going to prevail? Will Min-joon leave to oblige Song-yi’s wishes, or will he insist on staying, because as Heo Kyun said, he’s going to be willing to give up everything he has for his love? I don’t doubt that Song-yi loves Min-joon—she shows him with every action, and says it openly and often—but a part of me really felt that tug on the heart when Lawyer Jang laid out for her just how much Min-joon loves her. It’s true that he’s not an expressive guy, but I don’t doubt that he feels his love with incredible force. While love is no “Whose is bigger?” game, I do feel like his love is more all-encompassing than hers, more dire and fraught. So even if she asks him to leave, I don’t know if he’ll be able to do that.

What am I saying? He’s not leaving, duh. No way, no how. La la la la la, I can’t hear you.

My questions:

1-This drama is so funny! “Would they say “God!” in those days? (meaning Joseon times, like Heo Gyun, said it). 2-JK called HK, “HK-ah” why? (since there are not “brothers” any more). Was he being a little sarcastic? 3-Where was HK? In a hotel? (It looked like a mansion). 4-Did HK pretend to be drunk? (To fool JK). HK’s eyes were red (from crying), however I wondered if (and how much) he drank, especially since JK said he never drank. JK 5-Does anyone know where MJ and SY went? (Was it an island?) 6-How did JK know to time SY’s wine drinking with the press conference? That was interesting. (I know, it’s a drama). 7-Didn’t MJ said there are no people there (on that island kind of place)? 35mns and about 10 secs. in, I saw a boat behind them, LOL..8-Rhetorical question (but please, feel free to answer or share your thoughts). Why can’t MJ tell SY that he loves her? He said so to L. Jang, and to SY’s dad. A woman needs to hear those things, so why can’t he say it, so she can have the memories (of him saying that to her?). Is he so shy that he can’t tell her that to her face? Then write to her, that’s why we have Hallmark cards. I am trying to understand what is holding him back, and I don’t see it. I just feel that she needs to hear it. Maybe it’s OK because L. Jang told her how MJ feels about her.

So we had more meta in this ep., a confession, MJ outing himself to save SY, HK’ s bold move to catch JK, and his heartbreaking confrontation of his dad, about JK. A long date for MJ and SY, during which SY got to role play and imagine what her life would be like, if MJ stayed. The nice finish was the proposal, at the end of the ep. This ep. gave me so many feels, yet again. HK continued to be a hero (with a broken heart), putting his brother behind bars and making daddy Lee face the truth. I could not believe daddy Lee. No wonder JK could do all the killings he did under his father’s eyes. Daddy Lee really has no heart, and he contributed in creating a monster. The conversations between MJ and HK, HK and HK and especially HK and his dad, brought me to my knees. I had so many feels for HK in this ep., and PHJ really sold those moments. I was so afraid JK would be able to kill his brother, and relieved when that didn’t happen.

MJ doesn’t care about being outted any more. All he cares about is SY, and the added reminder that his time on earth is fleeting, have put things in perspective for him. I loved the hero he was today. MJ was reading my mind, when he froze time and left the reporters. (I was hoping people would not know). I loved all the scenes with MJ and SY, their “improptu getaway.” I loved their conversations (how many babies should we have? What kind of house should we live in? How many puppies should we have?), SY’s heartfelt confession, undercut by MJ fainting again, LOL. Their quiet moments, and the walk and proposal on the beach. So beautiful. I knew SY was planning on sending MJ away, especially with her taking all those pictures. She was making memories that she could hold on to, once he left (if he leaves).

I was so glad and relieved that the ex-wife shared with SM what she had told HK, so something could be done. I really didn’t want HK to die or experience more harm. I also love YJ and his dad in this ep., how YJ continues to defend MJ and protect him. And CEO Ahn, what a snake, always looking for a profit when the tide turns. But YAY for SY’s former manager who always liked her, and believed in...

Thank you for the recap! This ep. felt like a filler to me (in some places), though I loved it. And KSH looked tired (which can be expected, I know). I did love the feel and the flow of this ep. as well. I just love MJ being in love, relaxed with SY, and the way he looks at her. I also love the way he says her name, when she calls him. *Sigh* Oh, and I also love the OST of this drama.

Well I'm glad it's not just me! I mean, it's a drama, not a Pulitzer Prize winning book. Every little small instance does not need an explanation; some things just need to be taken at face value and/or you can suspend your disbelief.

Yeah, KSH looks so tired, especially on the proposal scene, I kind of didn't feel much emotion from him this episode.:( Well, he's so busy, with the fame he got there, there's a news that says that he only has 1 hour of sleep everyday.

Hello akadiche~

Yes, Korean actors and actresses tend to not sleep a lot (very little) during the filming of their dramas. They (the whole crew and staff, and actors) put in really long hours, so it must be rewarding when the drama does well, (such as with this one), and quite disappointing when it doesn't. I usually am amazed at how good their skin looks, even though they have had little hours of sleep, and they are surviving on vitamin drips, and are sometimes taken to the ER because they fainted on the set. (Really sad). They must have really good make-up artists.

I guess the good news is that the drama will be over next week, and they can rest a little. I know that KSH will have some fanmeetings, however, he should be able to rest in between. And apparently, he doesn't have a movie or a drama lined up after that, so hopefully, he will get to rest (and so will the rest of the cast and crew). I kind of liked how KSH was in this ep. He seemed mellow, especially in the bed scene, and the scenes when he had to look at SY (breakfast time, etc...). It made me think that he might be like that in real life. Kind of mellow at times (I am just guessing, or course).

I love the "God" part, and is it just me but Ryu Seung-ryong was in a movie with Kang Ji-Hwan who is playing Hong Gil Dong. Gone complete circle when now Ryu Seung-ryong playing Heo Kyun, Hong Gil Dong's writer.LOL!! Anyone catches that??
Although with CSY, I completely understand she wants him to go. Who can live with the guilt of having someone you love so dearly have to die to be with you. It is harder to let go, but then it is also even harder to live with that burden for the rest of her life. She could die a broken heart. I also understand how MJ is so much of an action kinda person, I feel you man, it is hard to speak eloquently in front of the person you love so dearly. MJ case is very believable, that a smooth talker like him could find no words that significant enough to express his feelings. (based on life experience) so much heart, so little time.

And don't kill me for this, but for once the bad guy actually smart enough like real world. I mean how many times in drama that in the end when they catch the villain, it becomes so easy that it is just plain ridiculous. I'm loving the resident sociopath. Although not as much as our alien Do Min Joon siiiiiiii

I agree with you v,

I actually enjoyed the bad guy in this drama. I loved how he was being acted, I really loved how Shin Sung-Rok played his character. The way his eyes would shift when he would like at people (YR, MJ), that gleam in his eyes that JK would get, when he had an idea (usually a bad one). I liked his hair on the side, and when it was on his face (kind of) to make him look younger. I also liked how they dressed him, in the drama (even that red suit). And SSR does look good, especially when he smiles (I think he is hot) :-).

And yes, I did find JK smart. I guess JK stuck to his promise to out MJ, if MJ messed with him (I guess MJ or HK, in this case). I just wished he had not been so one dimensional and that he had had a reason (besides greed) to like killing people.

I also loved how in this ep., we find out that MJ did what he had swore he would never do. When this drama started, and MJ listed the attributes of the kind of woman he hated, I thought to myself, "hum... SY is all those things. I bet he is not only going to fall for her, he is going to be so far gone, there will be no turning back." And in this ep., we hear what he had swore would never happen to HG (give his heart to a woman on earth, and give up everything for her), and he did just that, sacrificing more and more for her.

0

yes he is very good looking, I guess this drama mixing a bit too much stuff. It will be great to know background of JK, but we are the minority here, :D.

0

CSY'll feel guilty if MJ stay and die, she'd blame herself. But for telling him to go, i think, has nothing to do with that. She ask him to go because she believe he can exit, that she can live with it orther than he staying with her and disappear. CSY puts his safety above anything else, more than her happiness. But what abt his happiness(?). Aigooooooo.....

Exactly. Both the "heol" and "god" were anachronisms thrown in for comedic effect. The translators (cough cough) presumably retained them in the English subs to convey that effect since the show's producers so obviously chose to go there.

Hello anais,

I am so glad to see you here. I was afraid I might have chased you away with my constant questions and long comments last week.
I was also wondering what computer you use? (if you use one to write your comments). A Mac or a PC? I am asking because I tried to "italicize" some of my questions like you did, and it did not work when I posted them here. I "italicized" those questions on my Word document, but when I posted them here, they didn't not stay "italicized" :-( Is there anything you could recommend or suggest I try? Thank you in advance.

0

To italicize, you must use html tags.

italics = stuff you want italicized
* I put in an extra space between everything within the tags so that you could know the code itself rather than have the code go into effect.

No worries. I admire people who are curious.

0

I wasn't watching with subtitles, but it's funny to see that the subbers went along with it!

0

Oh, how annoying. My workaround for the html coding still didn't work.

Here's a link:

Hello anais (part one of my response),

About this, "No worries. I admire people who are curious," thank you! I had to look up the word "dogged" last week, to make sure I understood what you meant. (You said this last week, "It’s great that Kdrama elicits such enthusiasm and curiosity. It’s wonderful. More than anything, I’m just astounded by your doggedness and meticulousness. Mainly b/c I’m not someone who has such stamina. If I sounded discouraging, my bad, sincerely." Btw, you didn't sound discouraging, so no offense done (or taken). Until you wrote/said it, I had not seen myself as dogged. Meticulous, detailed, yes, that's me. "Dogged," made me think (and look it up, LOL. I had heard the word, but I wanted to be sure of the meaning).

I think because that is my preferred way of watching and experiencing a drama, I do not think too much about how I go about it. I just do it. I have to say that I do enjoy it as well. Sometimes, it gets a little tedious, but then I see how much I learn, and how I am building upon what I have learned in the past, and how beanies have benefited from it as well, and that is reward enough for me. Those are small steps (I still don't fully understand Korean and I don't know everything about the culture, but there is definitely a difference between when I started watching them 3 years ago, and now).

I also feel more engaged (when I go through that process), and I like that. Like I wrote in one of my posts, it's like taking a class, and I love learning (not just in a class setting, but in many ways). It is time consumming, but no pain, no gain, right? I am hoping that I will be able to do something down the road with my (genuine) interest in the Korean language and culture (and by extension my interest in Asia), so we will see. Every little step or brick(added) counts, at least for me. And to be honest, I don’t do that with every drama I watch. I do read recaps and some of the comments (of the dramas I watch), if they are available, just to see if I missed something in my understanding of the ep.

Also in general, when I don't know something, or when I am not sure about something, I would rather ask than assume. Even at work, I am always encouraged to ask, if I am in doubt. So I usually put my questions and my comments out there (post them), and see what happens. I keep my expectations low (I try to), however beanies, and sometimes the recappers, have been kind enough to respond or comment. I would not have those answers (and others would not read them as well), if I had not posted the questions and comments. I feel that it keeps me humble to not assume that I know, and it helps me keep an open mind, and a child-like curiosity, which can be good (depends on what one does with it).

0

anais Part 2: (sorry for the length of the post),

I would also say that my other motivating factor is that looking at another culture through what I am learning by watching Kdramas and Korean programming (on KBS World) so far (until I can do other things, to expand my knowledge and experience), is that it also makes me reflect on my own culture (and on the other languages I speak, including my native language), because there are some similarities. And often when I learn about certain practices (in the Korean culture) or words used in Korean, that sends me back to my own language and culture to see/think about if we have those practices, or those words, or that wording, etc...

I used to have those conversations with my dad, and it helps me realize how much I do know about my culture, and how much I don't know, which means that I then need to look into it, at some point. So as you can see, what I do when I comment and ask questions here actually serves many purposes or fills many needs I become aware of, along the way.

And thank you as well, for explaining how you italicize. I will look at the link you posted here, and I hope I will be able to do it. Also, thank you for the link you gave me last week, about burials in Korea (re: our conversation about tombs in Korea). I quickly glanced at it, and I bookmarked the page, so I can go back to it. I plan on reading it, and now, I also have a new website I can look into.

So anais,

What does "heol" mean? MJ used it when SY broke his vase (that HG gave him), and it was translated as "unbelievable." I remember Lee Bo-na and Myung-soo using that expression in Heirs as well. Does it only mean "unbelievable?" or does that depend on the context in which it is being used? Thank you in advance for explaining.

maybe saying the word "i love you" would be what inadvertently saves him and could be the reason why the writer hasn't had him say yet

I’m not an expert on ying and yang but from I’m able to understand is that nature can’t survive without having both. A new generation can’t be born without a man and a woman (ying and yang). As mentioned to dmj before from a famous doctor in joseon era, since he’s from another planet, this world/earth that exists on ying and yang will eventually reject him. Dmj as an outworlder has an imbalance of ying and yang, something that makes human beings indestructible. It’s what separates him from humans, not that he’s just an alien/different species, basically it’s his kryptonite. But if he was able to solve the problem of the ying and yang imbalance, for ex. becoming human because of the human capacity to love, something that separates humans from most life on the planet, having him saved from disappearing and drying from saying I love you, might be possible. Yes it can be cheesy and lame, but when hasn’t a kdrama or any drama, been cheesy and lame. Hell, after how Prime Minister and I ended, my expectations of how the writer will resolve DMJ’s problem is low. However much I love this drama, they can easily go the cheesy and lame route, but I’d still watch and read the recaps until the end. Same thing can’t be said for Prime Minister and I, since I read the caps and I was too upset to finish the drama. But as I was saying, it is a cheesy and lame, but the writer might take a cheesy and lame route to end YFAS. And if they don’t and give us something better than what we’d ever expected, then HALLELUJAH!

I so agree with your last statement here. I also have low expectations of what writer-nim can pull off to give us a plausible reason that allows MJ to stay/become humanized enough to be with Song Yi forever. I said it before and I'll say it again: MJ should have been allowed to solidify his union with Song Yi. This could have stopped time for him in this world that would've allowed him to stay. This may be cheesy as well but it's believe-able and romantic. I liked this episode very much and as I watched the ending I felt like the writer had really climaxed here and will probably eclipse his/herself with a subpar ending. I really don't want that!

Here is what I think are his options;

-MJ leaves and comes back later and by some alien healing miracle he can only then stay with her. Lame!

-Our brilliant hero finally realizes after so many kisses that he's built up immunity and can stay. Aaawww..Lame!

-MJ stays and dies. I'm not even entertaining this notion!

Surprise me writer-nim! ; )

i think your 2nd lame option might be the possible route taken. song yi did say that his fever didn't last as long, like he's building immunity. maybe the rule of not sharing salive and blood is not bc dmj will get sick, but that it makes him less alien and more human. if only he kept consistent with the kissing! or went to 2nd/3rd base, sigh

Aww.. I think you're on to something there. I thought so too in the first few episode after the initial kiss that may have been the case. I guess going 3rd base after that would've killed the poor guy! LMBO

@Lidy, Sorry to butt in but I was thinking too that for the 400 and some odd years that Do Min Joon was on earth, he basically had very limited contact with humans - only when necessary - so his (for a lack of a better word) strangeness stood out more - he was less human, he smiled less because he kept himself apart from humans, he went out of his way to do so - You can see it clearly in the beginning of the Drama, when his co-workers invited him somewhere and he dismissed them, when he first met met Song Yi, over by the elevator, he ignored her, he just went about his business from day to day; even when he mentioned to Lawyer Jang that he was leaving in 3 months and mentioned the (person) that he had saved 12 years prior, and lawyer Jang asked him if he should track down the person he said No, if it was fate then he would meet her again, even with Lawyer Jang, although they knew each other for about 30 years all he had was a pager, implying the extent which he kept himself apart from humans, he never even had a cell phone. The gradual change came when he met Song Yi- the first time he chuckled was when Hwi Kyung tried to kiss her and she asked him if he wanted to die, then with more interaction with Song Yi, he became more human like and less alien, he wanted to experience things that humans experience, whereas he didn't have a care in the world for the 400 or so years prior, he didn't care what people thought of him, and he couldn't wait to get back to his home planet. So it's not only the fact that each time they kissed that his body became more tolerant because the duration of his sickness was shorter, but even his views, his actions, how he felt, even his emotions became more human.

That's been my theory also for many episodes now. He may die but it doesn't mean he just goes poof in 6 months! Nobody knows so therefore it is perfectly logical. He's not dying soon and he's not leaving! Please!!! *whimper*

Ummm, hi guys, I never commented on dramabeans before (tho I read a lot of stuff here and I love all the people here - you are sweet! I love you all <3), BUT, this time I have to share my thoughts about how YFAS might end... sorry if someone already thought about that (but that might be good, that may mean it's logical and possible....).
So... what if Do Min Joon is weak because of that comet coming near? You know - it's happening for the first time, so how can we know if - and how - it's affecting him. Remember Superman? (XD) His own planet's rocks - Kryptonite, right? - was taking his superpowers away. Maybe it's the same with DMJ? Hence, when the comet goeas away, it takes all the troubles with it *____* Or, $%^$, maybe it even takes his powers completely - but that's even better, because he'll become more human then, stays on Earth, ages with Cheon Song Yi, dies together after 80 years.
That would be a good ending, don't ya think?

First - Welcome AnKa to Dramabeans! Be prepared to be sucked in to commenting frequently.

I like your theory. It's logical that the presence of his own terra on the fake comet could be affecting his powers. So therefore after it leaves he would be fine. I do hope that the comet would basically suck his alien essence out to space, thus not leaving him to live another 400 years. That leaves him here to have 7 kids and 5 dogs. It would be funny if they had 6 boys and 1 girl! :)

0

This comment brings up a question I've had for a while- does MJ have powers because he is on earth? Like Superman- he is super strong and can fly because the gravity on his home planet is a lot greater than earth's. The Kryptonians on Krypton didn't have powers normally. Also, they've been saying that time on MJ's planet runs differently. Does that just mean his people don't age like we do or that he is not aging because his body is linked to the time on his home planet which is going slower than ours? However, it would be hard to explain his telekinesis and time powers just by his location on earth. Maybe his people have psychic powers but not usually really long life? Idk.

Hi Ivoire! I haven't actually ever answered one of your detailed essay questions before but I'll give it a try right now. :P

1)I don't think they would have said it like Heo Gyun in this drama said it, but since it's a fusion-y saguek/modern times drama they took the liberty to do so.
2)I feel that more than sarcastic he was being condescending to HK
3)They're at the only hotel in Seoul (me being sarcastic of course) It's the hotel that this drama has all it's important stuff happening...
4) So I'm thinking that the drunk HK that JK saw was a staged "drunk" because I think they (JK and MJ and the prosecuter team) waited to act until HK sobered up a bit (remember he'd been drinking when he called MinJoon)
5)I'm not exactly sure where MJ took SY but JB mentioned that it was a mountainous island.
6)maybe not so much as timed as told the waiter that if he didn't receive a call at such and such a time to go and serve the poisoned wine to SY, as he said it was a back-up plan.
7) ehhh you noticed that? that totally went unperceived by me... sometimes I feel like you watch dramas with a microscope Ivoire... you are so detailed!
8)My thoughts on why he can't just tell her- maybe because he was such a skeptic about love that now that he's experiencing such a painful and dramatic one he's still coming to terms with it for himself? He'll openly show his love but to verbalize it might be the next big hurdle that he has to overcome, besides you know, finding a way to stay on earth without vaporizing and disappearing without a trace. and the writer better write up something that let's me smile at the end of this story or she and I will have words that won't sound pretty.

Hello Ms. Ivoire and Ms.(Mr?.) Min, I will dare to respond to question Nº 8 with a poem by Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618).

The Silent Lover:

PASSIONS are liken'd best to floods and streams:
The shallow murmur, but the deep are dumb;
So, when affection yields discourse, it seems
The bottom is but shallow whence they come.
They that are rich in words, in words discover
That they are poor in that which makes a lover.

His love is so deep, it has roots way beyond the mere sound of words: in the Silence that is the womb of the Universe.

Probably I am only a romantic and *way* over the top ;) .

It is not just you and it is not way over the top. For someone as composed and arrogant as CSY, she becomes so childish and giving to DMJ. Same case with DMJ, someone so good with words cannot find any words that express his feelings. It probably just hard for him to speak about his feelings because all these centuries he is so used to speak facts, or research based human emotions without actually feel the strongest human emotion itself, love and hate. He only has been feeling fear, disappointment, maybe pity, anger, or not emotion.

Actually, it may be a bit meta that MJ has not said "I love you" yet. In the movie "Thieves" KSH's character, Zampano totally yells "I LOVE YOU Yenicall" to the Jun JI-hyun character as he distracts the security guards away from her so she can escape. They chase him down and capture him. It is Awesome!!

@plum
Yeah that was awesome. thanks for mentioning that, i totally forgot. Buahahhaa

Very apt, FGB4877. Personally, I do not mind the fact that DMJ cannot vocalise his feelings. CSY knows he loves her enough to remain with her.

While they were sitting by the campfire, the structure of the dialogue reminded me of Princess Bride. At every request he said "as you wish", which was his way of saying 'I love you."

And here's a question for you: Tonight, how many people around the world are grasping at straws, trying to imagine ways these two can get their happily ever after? :-)

Hi Ivoire!

1. I was wondering about the "God" part too. I am thinking that the writer is being deliberately anachronistic to ramp up the laughts for that part? Ryu Seung-Ryong's cameo was such a treat this episode, he really has screen presence, you linger on his every word.

8. I was also confused about Min-joon's reticence. I can imagine all of us viewers waiting with bated breath for him to pour out his heart, but all we hear is "eat your ramyun"! LOL!
That said, Min-joon's reticence along with the revelation of just how deeply he loves Song-yi reminded me of my favourite lines in "Emma", where Mr. Knightley confesses and says "I cannot make speeches, Emma...If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. But you know what I am." *swoons* After reading that, reticence had never seemed more romantic!

Hi Ivoire!
Thanks again for all your questions for episode 18 and 19 :-)
Again I learned a lot!

This time, I can answer some of your questions myself.

3. As others said, probably a hotel.
4. I'm pretty sure HK wasn't drunk. Though he might be still hungover from the evening before, when he met with MJ?
5. I think it's Jangsado Sea Park. Like some others mentioned, Running Man filmed an episode there, episode 127. I recognized it because of the stairs.
6. After getting to know JK after 19 episodes, I think he just came prepared when his brother invited him over. He must have been suspicious of HK since he knows everything now.
7. I think I might watch that scene again. I'm curious if I can spot the boat this time. ^^

I really love this show and like you said, this episode felt like a filler but it didn't spoil my love for it. Let's just hope the last 2 episodes can satisfy us with a happy (and realistic) ending.
There's so much to say about this show but since I'm on my lunch break I don't have the time to write everything down about these episodes but I might post something in the OT tonight.

Hello Angelita~

Good to read from you again :-)! And you are very welcome! (regarding my questions for ep. 18 and 19 :-) ). And YAY!!!! You can actually answer some of my questions:

3-OK! 4-You know, the reason why I asked with HK was drunk was because JK said (as soon as he got into the hotel room), that HK doesn't normally drink (because at 1st, I thought HK was drunk). However, when JK was caught by the police downstairs, and HK came down the stairs, he looked sober or sobered up. His eyes were still red, however his eyes looked like he knew exactly what he had just done, and his eyes looked like he had been very aware during his conversation/confrontation with HK. That look in his eyes made question (then) whether he had been drunk at all. I could see how HK maybe did drink (remember that he drank when he met SM once (at a bar), to say that SY had rejected him). So I guess HK drinks some.

5-OK, thanks! 6-You know, your answer to this question makes perfect sense. I kind of thought the same, after (way after) I posted that question. As one commenter said though, can JK just buy/bribe EVERYONE? I am glad there are still people like Pros. Yoo, who do not want to be bought. 7-Did you rewatch that scene? Did you see the boat going by behind them? :-) It is there, if you pay attention.

Like you, I am hoping that we will have a happy (and realistic) ending. Just a few more days to go...

You know, I was very concerned for HK. I knew (and I hoped) MJ had something to do with HK inviting JK (that move was so cool) in the hotel room. I kept hoping that MJ would be somewhere close by, and I was relieved when MJ showed up, and took the gun away. I loved how MJ, HK, det. Park and Pros. Yoo worked together, to catch JK. And l also loved how Det. Park tried to protect MJ when the journalists wanted to take pictures of him (before he teleported).

Hi Ivoire,
I haven't watched this ep yet as we arrived home after a 4 hr round trip to the airport at 2 a.m. I am jumping in for a moment during a little work break to continue yesterday's recap discussion that we were having. First, I love the link to the relationship discussion. It is actually fun to have the list to check while watching kdramas. You're right, it is totally complicated.

About Genius 2: Rulebreaker season 2, it is a strategy game, sort of a mensa style set up, with 12 players, 1 being eliminated each week, and this week is the final ep. I watch it on dramacool dot com. It is a nice change from dramas and entertainment/variety and music shows. (Also, gooddrama cot net has some eps dubbed.) Do you watch Survival Audition Kpop star season 3? I like that, too. Well, I am half asleep today as you can imagine. Off to make a strong latte! Tonight's line up for me is YFAS, MK, IG, and EC. I can't wait!

Hello owl,

I am glad to hear/know that you guys made it OK to the airport, and that you guys came back safely. Thank you for explaining "Genius 2: Rulebreaker season 2," to me, I really was not familiar with this show (and of course no, I have never seen it). And no, I have not watched the other shows you mentioned either. Does "EC" stand for "empress Ki?" (because you wrote EC instead of EK). It sounds like you must have had a great evening, considering your line up :-)

Have you had the time to check out the video (with the skit) I mentioned in my last response? It is a really good video, quite informative and it applies some of the terminology explained on that page.

You know, one of the many things I loved in this ep. was the conversation between Lawyer Jang and SY. Remember that MJ wanted to explain some of that to SY (in ep. 18, I think), but she wouldn’t listen. Now she had that shock (after reading MJ's diary, and talking to Lawyer Jang). She really pissed me off when she wouldn't listen to MJ (his side of the story, and why he had to go), and I felt that she was being self centered, and self absorbed.

It takes two to be in a relationship, and I felt that if MJ had to listen to SY, then SY should (fully) listen to MJ as well. I really was not impressed with SY in that ep. She did kind of apologize later on, however, she still didn't ask MJ (or tried to find out) why it was so important that he left. If she had not seen that entry in the journal by chance, she would not have known (why he had to leave). I did love how JJH acted in both scenes, the one where she read the diary, and her conversation with Lawyer Jang. She has really shone in this drama.

1. When MJ "puffed in the east and puffed in the west" (an expression from Heo Kyun's novel, The Story of Hong Gil Dong, used even in modern Korean to describe someone who seems to exist in different places at the same time, like our Do Manager), Heo Kyun was surprised out of his got, the Joseon equivalent of silk hat (even though made of horse hair rather than silk) for the yangban-class men, so said "got!" as he was holding on to it. But of course, the writer was taking advantage of the fact that it sounds similar to "god." Nowadays, Koreans put "got" in front of anybody's name if that person seems to exhibit some god-like quality. For example, the writer herself is referred to as Got Jieun and the PD is referred to as Got Taeyoo. Same thing with "heol." Koreans usually say "heok!" or "uck!" when they are shocked and "heol" comes from that. Even though "heol" is used a lot nowadays, there could have been people saying that in the past. They would start with that "heo" sound and instead of finishing it off with k, could have just trailed it off with an r/l sound.
8. It's not that MJ cannot say "I love you," but the writer is saving the best for the last.

Hello PPasun,

Thank you for explaining that expression, "puffed in the east and puffed in the west." (Interesting also that it is still used in modern Korean). Also, thank you for explaining the "got-God" use in this episode. That is a subtlety I would have missed if I had not asked, and if you and some of the beanies had not taken the time to explain. Considering how subtle this writer can be, and how often she makes references to literature, other dramas, other movies, songs, skits in variety shows, etc... it is not always easy for one who is not well versed in the Korean culture and language to understand and detect all those nuances.

I have a question: are the writer and the director called "Got Jieun" and "Got Taeyoo" these days because the drama has been doing so well? Or were they called like that before? (I am just being curious). Also, so what would happen if the writer and the director wrote and directed a drama that flopped/didn't do well (at all), would they still be called what they are being called now? Or is that honor given only when the drama or movie does really well?

Do Koreans still use “heok!” or “uck?” Or do they mostly use "heol,' these days? I am asking, because I have seen "heol" being used in a few dramas, including this one (DMJ said it after SY broke his precious vase).

8-About this, "It’s not that MJ cannot say “I love you,” but the writer is saving the best for the last." This totally makes sense to me. MJ has indicated with his actions (clearly) how much he loves SY, and he came very, very close to telling her that he loved her (the balloons and the board in his car, that said "I love you"). All he had to do, was to give them to her (if he really couldn't say it). Also, for some reason, MJ does not strike me as someone who would have a hard time telling SY that he loved her, at least not this late in the game, when she has told him a few times (that she loves him), and when he has made it clear that he loves her more than she can imagine. Your explanation totally makes sense to me, and from how I have seen this writer write this drama, I would believe that to be very, very possible. Personally, I am hoping that that is what she will do, save the best for last, having MJ confess to SY that he loves her in the last ep. maybe (or in ep. 20). .

Thanks again PPasun! I always enjoy reading your comments.

I would just like to let the beanies know that I so appreciate all of your answers, and the fact that you guys (gals) indulge me (and those who read the answers to my questions) week after week. I have loved (and continue to love) the conversations and discussions we have been having.

I was hoping to be able to comment back some (I got up really early this morning), however, other things took me longer than I had anticipated. As can be expected, your comments have elicited more comments/thoughts in me, which I would love to share. So, all of this to say that I will be popping in and out this weekend to share my thoughts as well, as time permits.

For those of you who remember, and have the desire and patience to come back and read additional answers, please do so. No one is obligated of course. I just love (really I do) how we can delve into episodes of a drama and try to understand what the writer, director, actors and actresses are trying to convey, while trying to figure out the possible endings. I love it, when I can be engaged with a drama or a show, and some of its fellow viewers. I also love the feeling of being more knowledgeable at the end of the drama than I was, before I started watching it.

This is going to sound silly (or simple, and so be it): I was so happy, in this ep. when MJ said that he didn't want sons because they are noisy and he used the word "shikro (I know I am spelling it wrong, sorry)." I had a smile on my face, because we had a discussion about that word last week (or 2 weeks ago), and it had fully been explained what it meant, and what it implied. It is moments like that, that contribute to making the time and effort I put in writing my posts, reading others' responses (to my posts and others' posts), writing down my questions and posting them, all worth it. And I have had many moments like these. I just keep building on what I am learning, while watching dramas. So again, thank you!

I love seeing your post, Ivoire! And your questions sometimes make me thinking too. And the explanation from other beanies makes me understands this drama more. Thank you guys. I definitely have the separation anxiety after this drama ends cause it's means that I can't share and reading other beanies thought about this drama anymore. Oh maybe, we will meet at other k-drama recaps. =)

p/s - I definitely swoon over with KSH's smile. It really make my day. =)

Hello principessasya~

And thank you for your kind comment. I wrote a response to you earlier, and then my computer crashed. I got busy after that, so I can only respond (again) now.

I am glad that you are learning from the responses of the other beanies as I do. Isn't it neat to be able to deepen your understanding of the drama and of the episodes? And please, don't be anxious. You can always come back here to read the comments, and as you said, we might meet at another Kdrama recap.

And I agree with you, KSH does have a nice smile :-)

this episode gutted me like fish.

Song Yi looked so happy when she really thought they were in his planet. She really held so much hope that there was a way around their predicament.

i love the way they were smiling at each other while earing ramyun. they are sooo each others' first loves!

as soon as SongYi suggested to take selcas, i was bawling. bad juju!

When they were talking about how many kids they wanted, a house in the country and all that I was almost in tears. Song-yi's I love you and Min-joon's proposal gosh! Oh Hwi-kyung please stop beating yourself up, I hurt when you hurt. And dad, I'd care about you if you weren't such a deluded bastard.

Yeah, the dad is a real piece of work. But when I was thinking about what could possibly motivate his character, I remembered something I read here about how the Korean culture makes a parent partially responsible for the wayward actions for their children. So maybe all the rationalizations were the drama's way of portraying the extent to which a chaebol parent will rationalize and cover up the misbehavior of their children, for the sake of preserving their own image.

If that's not it, he's just plain crazy like his son.

The final scene with him and HK was heartbreaking. I actually loved how that was written. How HK continued to honor the father who had given him no honor. How HK's behavior provided acute contrast to the character of his older brother. How it worked to intensify the father's crushing realization of what he had enabled. And how it brought into sharp focus who was the stronger and more worthy of the two sons.

I've still got hope for a happy ending. Although I would hate it if it was some reincarnation ending where he meets her and falls in love all over again. It seemed the hint at that when she was talking to him about how if she turned back time they would fall in love again.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

It doesn't hit me as a reincarnation hint, but as a way of saying that however painful their love is, she doesn't regret it and would do it all over again.

I wonder why he is appearing and disappearing in front of so many ppl again and again. What consequences will there be? There is some trick up the writer's sleeve about how this will play out, right?

As for the happy ending, if his fevers are getting less severe with each kiss, if it is only his superpowers that are disappearing, then perhaps they can stay together and have those 7 kids, with him living on as an earthling. But what about all those very public unexplainable disappearances???

Love Love Love Ryu Seung Ryong's cameo!

"I wonder why he is appearing and disappearing in front of so many ppl again and again. What consequences will there be? There is some trick up the writer’s sleeve about how this will play out, right?"

I totally missed my opportunity to comment on episode 18 so I apologize for covering old turf. It appeared to me Min Joon was pretty peeved that his powers were failing him. The time they spent in in the villa where Song Yi kept nagging him about his inability to 'perform' almost felt like I was watching some ED infomercial. Lol She kept saying it was okay.. But he wasn't having it, he looked very disappointed.
I said that to say, losing his powers is really not where the writers should go to allow him to stay. Especially since they portrayed MJ as being beat up over it. ;)

I was getting that feeling too just because of the way their love line started with all this reincarnation nonsense. I think that this drama is too good to pull an ending like Gu Family Book on us and I really hope I'm right. We need a happy ending with the present characters, please!

So bittersweet and so poignant. While the episode was fairly predictable - girl decides to break up with guy for his own sake, atleast Song Yi is honest enough to tell him to his face instead of trying to subvert the plot.
And Do Min Joon's expression when she says that - just breaks my heart.

I love this series for the way it interplays the serious moments with the silly moments.

That was my favourite part! I was fully expecting the noble idiot to come out of Song Yi and break up with Min Joon saying she has had enough. But she being so honest about it, makes me love her even more. Like javabeans said it is so poignant (couldn't have put it across better myself!)

Oh, and I didn't care about the secondary story line till Hwi Kyung got involved. He really sells it. Looking forward to seeing him as a lead soon!

I love the main pair, I do, but this is the first time I've seen Park Hae-Jin in a drama (he plays Hwi Kyung) and I'm really impressed by him! I kind of like that he isn't the male lead because his character gets to have his own intriguing story arc, and gets to show his intelligence and heart. PHJ shows a lot of range in this role. He's one I'll definitely watch in the future!

I was just as impressed! I heard that in My Daughter Seo-Young he barely did anything so I'm glad his character was much more dynamic in this drama and showed his talent! A bit disappointed in YIN's character Se Mi though, because she rarely got screen time in the second half of the drama.

I'm happy that PHJ potray as HwiKyung then the bad hyung as he original cast first in this drama. If he still act as the bad hyung then I hope he potray it well too with evil smirk. heh.
well, talked about the bad hyung... Shin SungRok acting as evil was creepy enough....
then again, I can watch tall, handsome brothers in a drama even though one of them not a good guy... hehe

I'm not really sure why but my guess is that SY is already popular and for MJ to be associated with her plus him disappearing without any info or knowledge that he is a magician made them more curious about him. Also, he showed he was really fast when he shoved JK.. He also moved all the carts at the hospital and they know that the hospital is not a stage for magic but just a hospital... That is just my theory.. It's crazy though..

Don't worry. A lot didn't make sense in this episode.

Jae Kyung plotting against Cheon Song-yi with her favourite wine. How many willing helpers does this man get? And what a convenient perfect timing. And what a silly story twist to begin with. *rolls eyes*
Hwi-kyung having both evidences in a murder !!! case at his disposal to confront his father was just laughable.
Also Do Min Joon was always able to manipulate the CCTV cameras and other electronic stuff so he left no evidence. Apparently he forgot about this ability essential for his survival in the heat of the moment.
And dozens of photo journalists clicking away in a hospital room? Come on!

This episode did a turn to hysterical makjang and almost burried the sweet OTP scenes with this nonsense.

Yes, in real life, there is no way that those reporters would be allowed in the ER. That was stretching viewer belief dangerously thin. I thought that one very public disappearance and one very public appearance out of thin air was enough to establish the point that DMJ is either not of this world or that he is a very strange being. The ER scene with the newshounds put a damper on an otherwise well-executed drama. Perhaps everybody is just way too tired. I sure hope they won't make silly decisions like this in the last 2 episodes.

I can't believe you guys are nitpicking over reporters in the ER-HELLO! This is not only a drama about an alien, but also packed full of parodies of other dramas, K and otherwise. It's obvious one or other of you work in a hospital, and are taking that scene way too seriously; My God! He appeared out of nowhere, kept them away by moving things to block them, and then disappeared right in front of their eyes-when have you eve seen that happen in the ER? Sheesh-it's a comedy.

And one of the things I literally laughed at was when Song Yi's mom was distraught about her being missing then turns to her dad and asked if he only has one pair of clothing. Haha.

Haha.. I think almost everyone watching this drama wouldn't mind seeing KSH and JJH paired up in another project. I don't see that happening in the near future (repeat pairings are pretty rare in Kdramaland), but I will just keep on hoping! What I think might come true in the near future though, would be a couple CF, since KSH and JJH's popularity just exploded throughout Korea and East Asia.

I also laughed out at that part where Mom's panic turned into facepalming at her husband only having one outfit! This show manages to make me laugh at the most unexpected moments. I can be on the verge of tears and suddenly let out a chuckle because of some random joke inserted in the story.

And then the
"Is that the only pair of clothes you have?"

I usually don't cry because of sad dramas. Most of the time the great sadness and unfairness of it all are fake to me. Therefore when I cried at a drama about an alien leaving his earthling girlfriend behind to go home, I really do sound like a hypocrite. Truly though, I believe this drama touches upon real emotions and without any manipulation. I believe that it's mostly true that what matters isn't the quantity of time we spend but its quality. That's why I think Min Joon's choice resonate with me. I also feel for Song Yi - it's hard to let the one you love die when you feel there's some way you can make an impact.

I'm not looking forward to next week at the same time as wishing it's already Wednesday of next week. It is sad yet refreshing - so drama let's go out on a high note and mean something.

I actually felt rather optimistic about that smile at the end of the epilogue! It was as if he was hinting to us that there is something we are not aware of, a mechanism for him to stay on earth and live! :D

*breathes in, breathes out*

Okay, my thoughts are all over the place so I'll do them in numbers.

1. Ryu Seung Ryong cameo! It's so hilarious! Especially when Min Joon exposed his powers and Heo Gyun was just going "Heol!" and "God!" I don't know about you but I think it has something to do with the You From Another Star parody episode of Running Man with Yoo Jaesuk teasing Yi Hwa for using slang.

2. So does Park Writer-nim read netizen comments? Song Yi's mom: "Again? Why does she always end up in the ER?" and "Do you only have one set of clothes?" (to Song Yi's dad) Yesterday, it was Song Yi's comment about Min Joon's red ears. Way too funny

3. I really like that scene with Song Yi and Lawyer Jang. They're the only two people who Min Joon actually cares about. I know that the drama has to focus on SY and MJ's relationship but it always breaks my heart whenever they show a scene of Lawyer Jang. I mean, he's still the only friend he had before he knew Song Yi! He must be hurting as well.

4. Hui Kyung saying that he envies Min Joon and Min Joon saying he's the one who's envious. Ahh, pain, pain, pain.

5. Song Yi being smart and turning the tap on so that Min Joon won't hear her crying. :_(

6. Finally! Evil Hyung in jail! He was so creepy when he started stroking Hui Kyung's hair. oh gosh, I had goosebumps. You don't have to prove your point, I know your evil (and creepy)!

7.When Min Joon teleported to the restaurant and crashed on the table, I was thinking to myself "Wow, you've really gone crazy, Do Min Joon-sshi." Plus that scene at the hospital where he moves equipment to block people from coming closer. Sheesh, no one can touch his girl!

8. That scene in the island with Song Yi telling Min Joon how she feels. Ahh, I wasn't paying much attention when I watched it the first time but on the second round, I was looking intently at their eyes. Emotions, pain, sacrifice.. I just started crying until Song Yi curses out while carrying saliva-induced Min Joon. hehe.

9. Hui Kyung's scene with his Dad. Park Hae Jin did a really good job right there!

10. Writer-nim seems to really like writing male characters who LOVE daughters. In Unexpected You, the character Chun Jae Young also wants to have 5 children, all daughters! Now Min Joon wanting seven.

Yesterday, I was complaining about Min Joon not doing his proposal or not saying Song Yi the words that she wants to hear. After watching the last scene, it all made sense. That was just perfect. The song!! (Though I thought he's going to sing a Bae Ho song) Kim Soo Hyun's voice has all the emotions needed for that scene. Perfect proposal!

There's so many things I liked about this episode, I might end up listing every scene. lol. I'm glad that the Evil Hyung bit has come to an end. It's a shame that Se Mi didn't get any more parts. I thought her character was really good.

Next week would be the last week and I'm working whole day on Thursday! I can imagine myself going crazy at work thinking what happened in the end. Kaaaaakkkkkk! Anyway, we've all come this far. Let's hold hands and hope for a happy ending.. (please k-drama gods, please) Thanks javabeans for the recaps!

Everything you mentioned, I loved too!

Another scene I found heartbreaking was Lawyer Jang's sad solemn face as he was viewing the news coverage of Song-yi and Min-joon's disappearance and asking, "are you happy now?" Aieee... I think Lawyer Jang is in a really painful situation since he is going to have to deal with either the imminent departure of a dear, old friend, or the death of his friend. I hope the final 2 episodes will also devote some screen time to the deep bonds that Lawyer Jang and Min-joon share.

Perhaps my favourite thing about this episode today was finding out just how much Min-joon loves Song-yi. The Heo-Joon section was perfect for this episode, particularly in the epilogue when he tells MJ that those who are skeptical of love are the ones that are hit the hardest.

I'm bracing myself for next week, such deep love means deep heartbreak and buckets of tears! (But of course a happy ending after we run out of tears show!)

Loved Hui Kyung. My heart breaks for Hui Kyeong so, soo, sooo much! And his character is just such a good human being. Of near epic proportions. I do love that the storyline gave us this entirely separate journey for Hui Kyeong.

THIS is how you remain noble and not an idiot. Yes, the end result (this is a hypothesis and and not a sure prediction. If anyone can find a way to give them their boring happily ever after, please do, with my 100% support and agreement) may still be the same in that they're both separated, the difference is that they both know why and none of them goes off without closure and with a deep emotional scar. An idiot is one who thinks he knows everything and dismisses the other's opinion, which is not actually very couple-like.

So yeah, I liked this episode, if only to show us the surprising extent of MinJoon's love and how even though they only have so little time, they know how relationships should be. It s more pathos focused, this episode, with the plot-heavy-lifting done by HwiKyung (the lovely, smart but sad guy).

A thought just occured to me. If MinJoon's not allowed to be here due to the clashing of forces of yin and yang or something, whatever, then how did he last 400 years here? Technically, he should have vanished 400 years ago when his mothership left earth. Also, does that mean if I kill some random passing heavenly body which energies clashes with MinJoon, him and SongYi get to have their happy ending together? Because I so totally would crush that heartache-causing thing. You see what I did with ISON?

it is not that it is not allowed, but it was drained. Yin and Yang from human to nature flows as a circle, and since MJ's energy cannot be recycled in earth it is slowly draining

My breath was caught up almost throughout the episode, suffice to say I am shipping a theory that he turns human. Somehow if that happens I will accept it. period.

I think a fairy tale line ending is justified given how much stakes these two are going through.
Next week will be a torture wait.

The story just keeps getting better. Even the Chinese media (China Daily) ran a piece discussing it titled "TV dramas need creative touch," which claims that "You Who Came From The Star and The Heirs have been subjects of hot online discussions throughout Asia. Besides, the book, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, read by the hero in You Who Came From The Star was a hard-to-get item on Amazon for a while...." The article goes on to argue that 2013 was a kind of renaissance for K-Dramas, and even that China should emulate Korea and ditch the cliches. Hoping writers on both sides of the Yellow Sea take heart.

i believe Minjoon & Songyi will be like those two trees of different species & growing old together....

this episode has been the most heart tugging & brings me to tears, particularly the parts with Hwikyung & the ending scene of SY asking MJ to leave so he can exist somewhere.

this writer is BRILLIANT. i have enjoyed her previous works, but this one by far is the most genius of all the dramas I've watched. Every step the story has taken has been entertaining & moving. Each episode only feels like 5 minutes long.

I'm really thankful for the 1 episode extension. Without it we wouldn't have gotten as much cute scenes in the 2 previous episodes.

Hopefully the writer continues to amaze us & be brilliant. no sad endings please. I think she reads netizen comments or knows about it. I think that's the reason why she put in the scene yesterday about minjun's face & ears being red and also how SY's dad wears the same outfit everytime we see him in today's episode. So surely she knows that everyone wants a HAPPY ENDING where SY & MJ are together on earth & MJ & SY aging together with a beautiful family. PLEASEEEEE

let's all pray to the kdrama gods~

OMG, Ryu Seung-ryong!

Park Hae-jin has just been knocking it out of the park with his superb acting. I'm really happy that he is able to showcase his acting skills in this drama! It's almost hard to believe that he was Gong Hyo-jin's character's hoobae in Pasta!

OMG, the open-mouthed kiss! So hot! EEE! (Though, nothing compared to their kiss in The Thieves, which was practically baby-making :3)

It looked like most of the cast got their haircuts refreshed, which makes me want to get a Cheon Song-yi style haircut :O

I was kind of surprisesd you didn;t mention about Ryu Seung Ryong's "God!" bit. I was laughing over my head when it happened.

Oh, and the alien reveal! Never have I been so touched and frightened at the same time at a hero's love declaration (or lack there of, in this case. Or the overflow of. This confuses me). Do Min Joon managed to tackle it in one single blow, making us squee and spazz in delight while at the same time hanging onto his dear life.

And I just love how he dotes on Song yi when she was telling him all of her plans to live in the suburbs. His face. Gawd. My dream would be to have some guy looks at me the same way he did. Full of admiration and frontal affection.

But Song yi's selca taking and "Exist somewhere" speech was what broke me the most. I finally teared up for the first time in these long 19 episodes when she said, "Exist somewhere. For me."

Goodness. To what extent are you going to turn me inside out, upside down, Drama?

SY is awesome to pieces. How she wants to match MJ's love by letting him leave to exist somewhere... sniff sniff.. Also love how she don't mind being in a different planet.
Its nice to see how love let you feel that you have a world that only the two of you exists.. like when he teleported without hesitation.. ♡♡♡
Thanks for the recap!

I watched the ep in a hurry but I never felt such a raw and heart wrenching ending. DMJ singing that song that BTW describes them so perfectly and the emotion behind his voice. Oh my eyes still water when I think about it. But at the same time this ep was sooo funny. Seven daughters and five dogs hehe. And The Scene when DMJ goes all out in one. Amazing. I wasnt expecting it. But it made us realise how much he truly loves her, enough to guve away his secrets and his life for her. And the kiss, at least he is developing a tolerance.
Evil bro still gives me the heebie jeevies. And evil dad is a bitch.

I think that when Min Joon is leaving.. or dying.. or evaporating, he will say "I love you" to Song Yi. This reminds me of the american movie "Ghost," where Sam never said "I love you" to his love but only "Dido." It wasn't until the very end, when he was about to go to heaven that he told her he loved her.

When Song Yi told Min Joon to leave with tears in her eyes, it just reflects how Min Joon acted when he told her that he was leaving because he was also crying at that time. These scenes just shows us how much they both love and yearn for each other. They had to battle their own feelings before coming to that decision, which is to part from the person they love :(

Still in disbelief that this drama is about to make me crazy (or already done so?)....

Despite the sadness, I will choose to stand by Song yi's side --happy enough to know that DMJ is living somewhere, and not dead. Wow! These people are so effective in their characters that I still can't stop my tears from flowing, hours after watching them. This episode, for me the saddest part is when DMJ sang to CSY. Still cannot wiped the look on DMJ's face, his expression, from my head. So sad...
