You From Another Star: Episode 17

Big decisions are made and directions chosen, leading this episode to its all-time high rating of 27%. We also get a sassy cameo from a familiar character (random drama crossover!) to throw in some laughs, not that Chun Song-yi has any trouble supplying those on her own. I do love that even as Song-yi has legitimate reasons for feeling crushed and miserable at times, the show retains its light touch in its expression of that angst; she can make our hearts twinge in sympathy for her while still making us laugh, which is a much appreciated (and all-too-rare) achievement.

RECAP: SEVENTEENTH RECORD

In interview mode, Min-joon tells us of a government job he once held, working at the bureau that dealt with astronomy, meteorology, and geography matters. We see the Joseon Min-joon poring over a text that contains detailed calculations of astronomical phenomena, like the phases of the sun and moon and eclipse forecasts. His colleague asks if he’s been going around saying “strange things”—like the world being round or spinning, for instance.

Min-joon says that it’s true, only to have his friend laugh that it’s ridiculous—why are people not dizzy at the spinning, and what evidence does he have for calling the Earth round? Min-joon chuckles that it’s visible from afar, but just smiles to himself when his colleague asks if he’s ever personally seen Earth from a distance.

In his interview, Min-joon says that on his home planet there was a lot of curiosity about Earth. He gives us the nutshell explanation of how they made the trip to Earth, which involved terraforming an asteroid to make it seem like an ordinary comet, to hide it from the Earth’s view, and to time its arrival to coincide with Earth’s orbit at the point where it’s nearest the sun. This orbit takes 404 years, so this upcoming comet’s approach will be his first chance to go home.

It will likely also be his last chance, because there’s always the possibility that orbits may shift in the future. But more importantly, if he doesn’t go home this time, he might die.

Now we resume the conversation as Song-yi and Min-joon wait to shoot her scene. Min-joon confesses that he has to return to his home in a month’s time, and Song-yi tries understand. Not fully grasping the implications, she says that’s okay, but when will he come back? Oof. “I’m good at waiting,” she adds.

But reading Min-joon’s reaction, she guesses that it won’t be one year or even ten. She asks, “You won’t be coming back?” Min-joon nods, too wracked with sobs to say anything. Ackkkk, I love the way he cries, except for the way it tears my heart out.

As this sinks in, Song-yi’s temper flares as she calls him an awful jerk after all, now seeing why he spouted all that stuff about being selfish. “One month?!” she exclaims, as though offended at its tininess.

Song-yi storms off and invites herself on Se-mi’s ride back to Seoul. Everyone sits uncomfortably while Song-yi sobs to herself, then asks for a more appropriate song selection than the peppy Jason Mraz song playing. She makes her requests in increasingly distraught wails, singing along to “Like being shot” (Baek Ji-young), “I’ll get lost, have a nice life” (G.Na), and “Can’t let you go” (2AM).

At home, Yoon-jae catches a news report about the approach of a comet, named Deep South, which is returning for the first time in 400 years. Curiously, there’s also mention of a second comet that has been disintegrated by its proximity to the sun, which seems like it ought to mean something important.

Song-yi arrives home and locks herself in her room, where she cries in bed. That means that when the director is finally read to shoot her scene, she’s nowhere to be found. Indignant, the director orders her replaced right away, happy to cut Song-yi loose.

That lasts for about two seconds until Min-joon approaches in full manager-lawyer mode, stating that Song-yi has been rushed to the hospital. He pointedly reminds the director of the stunt that went awry on his watch, compounded by the extraneous action shoots he forced her to endure, which aggravated her condition. Min-joon apologizes a touch sarcastically for messing up the schedule. The director backpedals right quick, assuring Min-joon that schedules are made to be changed.

Hwi-kyung gets the roster for the stunt team and sees Killer Secretary there. (He’s listed under the name Lee Shin, but why rename him now when Killer Secretary does so well?) He tries calling the phone number, which has been disconnected.

He keeps up the unsuspecting brother routine with Jae-kyung, and asks if hyung will accompany him to visit their eldest brother’s grave. He doesn’t press when Jae-kyung declines with a excuse.

Min-joon arrives home and hears the voices next door as Mom urges Song-yi to stop crying. Heart heavy, he picks up his book again (the Miraculous Journey story) and resumes reading, the words landing with poetic sadness:

Look at me.
Grandmother made a wish.
I learned how to love.
That was a terrible thing.
It hurts.
My heart hearts.
Please help me.

In the early morning, Min-joon hears Song-yi heading out for a jog and follows her outside, wanting to talk. She’s still angry and snaps that they have nothing to talk about—he’s leaving, fine. She’d already decided to get over him when he came after her and kissed her, she reminds him.

He blurts that he did that because she kept doing things to worry him, like signing contracts with random guys and getting caught up in engagement rumors. She retorts that it’s none of his business since he’s leaving: “The day you leave, I’ll grab any random guy and get engaged!”

Song-yi jogs on without him, which is when Min-joon catches the eye of a young woman sitting on a bench, whose face lights up to recognize him. It’s Suzy in her cameo, getting the full goddess intro with hazy white light and slo-mo camera work. She recognizes Min-joon as her professor and introduces herself as Go Hye-mi—you know, her Dream High character—and even adds that he looks just like her ex-boyfriend Sam-dong, which, HA.

Min-joon clearly doesn’t remember who she is or return her interest, even when she admits that she failed his class on purpose so she could take it again. To be polite, he lies that he might maybe remember her, and she says coyly that it’s possible he didn’t recognize her because she’s gotten prettier in the last year. LOL. Good to know the Hye-mi ego is still indestructible.

Min-joon doesn’t quite know how to extricate himself so he humors Hye-mi for a bit, just as Song-yi turns to see the young upstart flirting with her man. So when Hye-mi reaches to brush something from Min-joon’s face, Song-yi slaps down her visor and butts in—literally, backing up to break up the cozy clinch. Then she loiters in the background, watching the scene intently.

Undeterred, Hye-mi notes that the professor has finally gotten a cell phone, and asks for his number. Min-joon tries to refuse, but she pours on the aegyo until he reluctantly starts to recite his number. At which point Song-yi barges in again and informs Min-joon curtly: “You said you wanted to talk. I have time right now. Do you want to talk now or never see me again? Make your choice.”

So Min-joon gives a hasty goodbye and dashes after Song-yi, leaving Hye-mi grumbling about the interfering ajumma who looks like a Song-yi knockoff.

Song-yi cuts right to the chase: Does he have to go? Can he… not? She asks why it had to be now, of all times—he’d lived here for so many hundreds of years, and the minute he meets her he has to go away. Can’t he just stay with her?

Min-joon can’t reply, and she adds, “If you can’t, then don’t shake my resolve. It may be over for you once you leave, but I have to keep living here.” She asks him to leave quietly, “and leave me alone.”

Min-joon replies, “If that’s what you want, I’ll do that.” He turns and walks away. Song-yi turns too, heading in the other direction.

Hwi-kyung and his mother visit his brother’s grave, and Hwi-kyung notes that hyung’s accident befell him when he was this age. Huh, I’d assumed it was in childhood or at least adolescence, but I guess not.

He comments on the oddity of his non-drinking brother deciding to drive drunk one day—and on the day before Hwi-kyung’s graduation, which he’d promised to attend. Mom explains that they hadn’t known he suffered from depression until the autopsy revealed antidepressants in his system. Coupled with news that he was foiled in love, she supposes that he’d decided to take his own life.

But that’s not the conclusion Hwi-kyung’s mind arrives at—something doesn’t add up, he decides. So he digs up an old article reporting on his brother’s death, and the name of that medication triggers a hunch. He scans a news report on Yura’s death, and yes, there it is—the same meds.

Aw, poor guy. It’s a blow to finally get confirmation of what he feared, but that doesn’t prevent him from meeting with Seok to share his knowledge. Seok wonders why he would disclose information about his own brother, but Hwi-kyung says that it’s because he’s his brother that he needs to stop him. He offers one more crucial bit of information: the mental hospital where Jae-kyung sent his ex-wife.

Song-yi takes out Bok-ja for grilled meat, redoubling her efforts to eat only the parts that are supposed to keep her youthful-looking. Aw so she hasn’t given up yet, has she?

Min-joon’s no better off, and Lawyer Jang comes by with consolation drinks. Min-joon reminds him that he can’t drink, but Lawyer Jang figures no harm can happen since it’s just the two of them at home. (Famous last words.)

Min-joon reminds Lawyer Jang of a question he’d once asked, about how he managed the loneliness while living so long on his own. “When I lived completely alone, I never felt lonely. It’s only now that I’ve found someone to love for the first time, and think of having to leave her side, that I feel truly lonely. As though I’m the only one left in the universe.”

He drains his bowl, while across town Song-yi confides to Bok-ja that she wishes she could turn back time so that she’d never meet him. Then she wouldn’t feel this terrible emptiness at the thought of being without him.

By the time Song-yi returns home, Min-joon is drunk and the lights are flickering madly. These things are not unrelated. Lawyer Jang cuts him off, and Min-joon wonders dully, “What should I do now?” His head drops in frustration, and the lights go completely black.

Song-yi’s lights cut out too… as do those in the entire building. Haha. Lawyer Jang lights a candle and grumbles that he thought Min-joon might make things fly around, not short-circuit the building. I love the idea of Lawyer Jang hoping to see some alien tricks for his amusement.

Min-joon slurs to Lawyer Jang that his time is precious—why is he spending it here, instead of where he really wants to be? (Lawyer Jang sniffs that he understands the sentiment, but the wording is mean—is a thirty-year friendship good for nothing when a woman’s involved?)

Then, suddenly, Min-joon disappears. Lawyer Jang finds him on the balcony, drunkenly ordering Se-mi’s billboard to move aside—he came out wanting to see Song-yi’s face. Next thing we know, Se-mi’s lighted ad goes dark too, and Lawyer Jang complains, “D’you really have no better place to use your energy?”

Then the whole city goes dark, and Lawyer Jang worries that he should never have gotten Min-joon drunk. Hindsight is so clear, isn’t it?

Song-yi lights candles and heads to her room, only to find Min-joon sprawled on her bed. She feigns annoyance while actually being gratified, and quietly mumbles at him to leave before giving up, saying, “Well, I’ve done as much as I can.” Haha.

Min-joon starts mumbling, “I… don’t wanna be with Lawyer Jang.” She asks who he wants to be with, and thrills when he answers, “Chunnnn Song-yiiiii.”

In the morning, he wakes up sober and shame-faced. In his interview, Min-joon declares that he deplores people who get blackout drunk, tsk-tsking righteously at humans who would give up their free will to the powers of alcohol.

Making his mortification complete, Song-yi’s staring right at him, ready for his scolding. She informs him that he got roaring drunk and passed out on her bed, and Interview Min-joon says haltingly, “I did? But there’s no way I would…”

She gets right in his face and he asks her to step back. She challenges, “Why should I?” and he stammers, “B-because I can’t th-think.”

“Then what about this?” she asks, and swoops in to kiss him. Then she collects herself, straightens, and orders him to leave.

“Are you playing around?” he asks. “Why’d you just do that?” She points out that he’s probably pissed off, which is exactly how she feels.

Just then, her mother knocks on the door and they scramble around to hide before she catches them in this incriminating scene. Song-yi locks her door and tries to get rid of her mother, while Min-joon focuses his energy to teleport out… only to find his powers on the fritz.

Which means he’ll have to do this the old-fashioned way. Min-joon climbs onto the balcony, gritting his teeth while Song-yi disparages his lack of skills and says that he can’t do anything better than a human.

She returns to her room to find her brother looking at her suspiciously, whom she fobs off with excuses. She reminds him to talk to Dad, even though Yoon-jae barely remembers his father. He talks like he’d not interested in talking to Dad, but he does drop by his father’s security guard job to watch him work from a distance.

Seok goes to the mental hospital for a surprise search, hoping to catch them off-guard. They storm inside with a search and seizure warrant, but there’s no trace of the ex-wife.

Min-joon runs into Yoon-jae in the hallway, and Little Bro offers the information that Song-yi hasn’t been eating or sleeping well. We see her haunting her phone for a call or a message, and when she doesn’t get any, she fires up the chat app. She writes and deletes a bunch of half-completed messages, like how she wants to spend the month with Min-joon anyway.

She changes tack and goes for the direct approach: Speaking aloud, she talks as though Min-joon can hear her (he can), explaining that she’s never been a constant fan of anyone, hopping fanclubs as her tastes changed. She’s fickle like that.

“I’ve been thinking it over, and I think I could forget you right away,” she says. “Just help me not have regrets. If I send you off without having done anything, I think I’ll be left with unfulfilled feelings. So… all the things people do in three months, a year, and two years… as you said, let’s do it all in one month.”

She struggles to keep her tears under control and continues, “If we do everything we want to, maybe I’ll even get tired of you before the month is over. That’s the kind of person I am.”

Listening from his room, Min-joon agrees to her suggestion. “But how do I forget you?” he asks. Song-yi proposes a trip tomorrow, and Min-joon sends a text to confirm it.

So in the morning, they meet in the hallway and head out together. She takes his hand in the elevator, and they keep holding tight as he drives.

Jae-kyung gets word that the prosecutor was at the hospital and makes arrangements to have his ex transferred. The more important question is how the prosecutor knew about the hospital, and Jae-kyung has an inkling of who might have tipped him off. Just then, Hwi-kyung drops by to ask hyung to lunch, and leads him to a private restaurant room to meet somebody important.

Jae-kyung is interrupted by an emergency phone call that his ex-wife has disappeared. He starts to dash out to take care of the matter, but Hwi-kyung grabs his arm and leads him to that room anyway… to face the ex, sitting next to the prosecutor.

In flashback, we see Hwi-kyung calling Song-yi during her jog in the park, where he hears Min-joon’s voice over the line and calls him out separately. Hwi-kyung refers to his hospital stay and confronts him about materializing out of thin air, and also for saving Song-yi twelve years ago. Min-joon confirms that it’s true, and now Hwi-kyung decides to trust him and take him into his confidence.

Now understanding why Min-joon warned him to protect Song-yi from his brother, he shares what he learned of the wire stunt and asks for Min-joon’s help in extricating the ex from the hospital.

Now we see that Hwi-kyung had suggested that Seok’s arrival at the hospital would spur the staff to hide the ex-wife—and Min-joon was there to see where they took her. Min-joon and Hwi-kyung had followed that getaway car to the house where the ex was taken, and Min-joon used his time-freeze to bypass security.

Min-joon and Song-yi hole up in a cozy getaway, where she asks him to run lines with her. She assures him that he doesn’t need to act, which is a good thing because he is hilariously stilted—although that doesn’t stop her from loving hearing him say that she’s the most beautiful woman in the world who doesn’t need to diet or change.

Min-joon complains at the cheesy dialogue—ha, I’m going to die laughing if she made it up—but that’s nothing compared to the back-hug scene direction, which he doesn’t want her to do. She suggests practicing it, which he gruffly refuses to do—and then he reads the next page and stops, suddenly in a dark mood.

Song-yi sticks to Min-joon’s side while he makes coffee, and she assures him that this is all in service of getting sick of him quickly. Min-joon laughs to himself, knowing she’s bluffing when she talks like a dating pro when really, Yoon-jae told him that she’s never once dated before so she has no idea what she’s doing. And also that she gets super attached to things and can’t even raise a puppy because she gets so scared it’ll come to harm.

So when Song-yi finds the main room empty—and also the terrace, and the side house—she tears around the property screaming his name, afraid he’s gone. He shows up behind her and she clings to his hand, saying that she was afraid he’d left already, without warning or farewell.

Min-joon promises, “I won’t go. I won’t leave you and go. I’m going to stay here with you.”

He clarifies that he means not now, and not in a month either. She asks if that’ll be okay for him, and he hesitates. We know he’s thinking he’ll die, but he assures her, “I’ll be okay.”

Song-yi hugs him tight.

EPILOGUE

Song-yi taps away at her computer, indeed having written all that cheesy dialogue about how she’s perfect the way she is, and better than all those annoying, loud youngsters of today.

She grins to herself and adds a kiss in the scene, but deletes it thinking of Min-joon’s health, replacing it with a back-hug. She squeals to herself at the idea, then goes in for the killer last line, which Min-joon couldn’t bring himself to say: “I won’t go anywhere, I’ll stay at your side for a long, long time.”

COMMENTS

He’s not going? Aieeeeeeeee. I’m half-thrilled at his decision—mostly because it’s less frustrating to live with a decision than it is to wait for one to be made—but also wary that this means we’re heading into terminal disease melodrama. This drama has been so solid for so long that I don’t actually believe it’ll tank into a glorified cancer suffering narrative now a la Thousand Day Promise or whatnot, and I do have faith that it’ll keep its sense of humor. If we could get through the noble rejection and the self-denial angst and the separation misery with good humor, then I’m sure we can get through the rest with equal cheer. It’s just, you know. The Cancer Drama was never my favorite genre.

I’m not too worried that Min-joon would actually die at the drama’s end (I believe that it’s a genuine concern to him within the storyline, but this just isn’t that kind of show), but I do feel uneasy at the fact that he’s lying to Song-yi. Aside from the basic part where he’s lying, it’s going to hurt to watch her start planning her future with her full-steam-ahead enthusiasm, while Min-joon will just be hoping he was wrong and won’t keel over at her feet.

And of course, there’s also the all-too-crucial question: But what about the kisses? And the skinship? And no, Saran wrap kisses won’t do, because they were frankly creepy in Pushing Daisies and they’d be just as creepy here.

We got some explanation of the comet-hopping mechanism today, though I’m not quite sure what to make of that disappearing comet. Was that a throwaway detail, or will it have unforeseen consequences on Min-joon’s physical condition, or ties to his planet? The drama has been pretty stingy on comet-related details so I tend to think anything they give us is going to play out somehow, but it remains to be seen how.

In any case, I’m relieved to have Min-joon deciding to go forward with his Earth happiness, even if it’s the infinitely riskier move when it comes to his life. But the guy has lived for 400 years (at the very least), and hasn’t really felt alive till the past few months. Better a short life with love than an unending one without?

If DMJ really stays I wish for him to start growing old(it would be fun seeing him worry about wrinkles and whitehair). And that way they could have the Happily ever after I want them to have. Somehow I see that the Issue with JK the Serial Murderer will afect the relationship between SY y MJ. Maybe they'll pull of the classic bullet but not killed at the end, right after killer bro goes craaaazy. But every clique is good if used the right way.
I loved how this chapter made me as emotionally inestable as they are. One moment I'm bawlling my eyes out and the next I'm LMAO and then I melt with their cute act... As of today I realised you cannot watch a Drama like this in public places (maybe I should've started when i was shouting for DMJ to kill serial Brother in the middle of my Uni's Café)
Anyway I love this recaps. They make analize things sometimes I fail to connect in the drama and it gives me a better view insed the characters heads.
CSY & DMJ hwaiting!

This drama keeps getting better and better! Really appreciate the speedy n witty recaps :) I think the comet which broke off is his spaceship coming to take him home...so there's a strong chance that it will not arrive on earth after all.

Sigh, I love this show. Kim Soo Hyun is too fine. And Jun Ji Hyun is fantastic. This couple is got some hardcore chemistry.
I must say, I was really depressed to hear about the Sam Dong and Hye Mi break up. I mean, this is before he won his grammy, so I imagine that as soon as that dork gets his hard-earned title, he'll go back to Korea and get his girl back. As if he could live without her. Pfttt

1.) I appreciate how well this show can turn our emotions on a dime and not let us wallow too long on one particular scene. JJH has really mastered that aspect of acting. Very few actresses can pull off a crying scene one second then a whacky scene the next without looking ridiculous.

2.) I just saw Dream High recently so the whole Go Hye Mi / Song Sam Dong reunion really thrilled me. I immediately noticed Suzy's acting had come a long way since Dream High days.

3.)It looks like it's time for big bro to pay the piper. I hope they would wrap his story up in a nice neat bow in the next episode so we can concentrate more on our OTP in the final 3 episodes.

4.) They did not have much to do for Yoo In Na in this episode. I hope they don't forget about her and give her a proper ending to her character.

5.)My wish for the ending.. He does dies but he actually comes back as a human (like the phoenix). DMJ and CSY do the cutsie stuff for most of the final episode. Then we see both of them (with SY pregnant) looking at a house to buy and Jung Eun Pyo (realtor in this drama / KSH sidekick in The Moon Embracing the Sun) showing them the property.

I've been wondering since the beginning of this show if Min Joon's planet already disappeared a long time ago :( It would explain why the author doesn't bother to address too many details about his previous life or family. Hearing about that comet disintegrating kind of solidified that suspicion for me--it was presented like a hint. Ah, but who knows~

this episode rocks! every bit of it :)

just confused about one thing (maybe i was just too excited to watch the next scenes)...it says the comet comes around every 404 years, and MJ is only 400 years on earth...so, what does that mean? was it just an error in the subbing, or it means his real comet is not yet coming...haha, i might be dreaming, but seriously it bugs me. hey, i wish for him to stay (alive) longer, i want to see their dream of the future realized. :-)

Actually, MJ has stayed on Earth for 404+ years, from 1609 to 2014.

Which actually makes out handsome alien: 800 years old. He's been here for 400 years and it took 404 years to get here.
I wonder how long they live on his planet; or if when he says "time is different" on his planet that 404 years there is really 20 years.

Hey javabeans, I'm pretty sure the first comet mentioned in the news broadcast is the one that Minjoo was referring to when Yoonjae was leaving his apartment the first time. He told him not to worry about it hitting earth and to not use that as an excuse to give up on life and stop studying. Because didn't the news broadcast say that it passed earth and broke up in the atmosphere?

One thing I hope they don't do is have MJ's spirit transfer into Chaebol son's body (maybe after some tragic accident or evil brother kills him) so that MJ can become a human.

You know I've been wondering for a while why on Earth did Lex Luthor/Jae-kyung put his ex-wife in a mental home instead of just killing her?
I mean it's not like he has a heart so it's not lingering emotions also he most likely killed his older brother so again no heart.
Is it just a plot device to give a way to catch him or are they going to give us a legitimately believable reason for his actions.

Yeah, kim soo hyun was born to wear the hanbok. He tends to generate alot of buzz in joseon garb. I don't usually get all giddy over my actors/actresses in hanbok but he's one of the few that just looks SO dashing in it that the hanbok might even make him look better than modern clothes.
He placed first in a voting poll of which celebrity looks best in hanbok. Then again he's placing first in everything nowadays.

Just got home after hanging out with my friends. I was so looking forward to being here.

First of all, Suzy cameo! I haven't seen Dream High but it's funny that they kept Suzy's character name and even called Samdong her ex-boyfriend. The meta is killing me. Now, if only Cha Taehyun would make cameo, yes?

I laughed so hard while watching this episode coz Cheon Song Yi but that part where she told Min Joon that she's good at waiting. 1 year? 2 years? 10? Reminds me of that special Detective Conan episode that's about the characters 10 years later. T^T

I love how jealous Lawyer Jang is of Song Yi. It's quite disappointing to hear your long-time friend/companion saying that he doesn't want to be with you but with someone else. That scene with Min Joon adorably denying having done all those crazy things when he was drunk totally made me kyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Min Joon-Hui Kyung alliance, commence! \o/ Just don't die, Hui Kyung...

I'm scared as to where this drama is going now that Min Joon decides to stay. I agree with you, javabeans. I don't like how he's lying to Song Yi. I still think that a good decision is to make the best out of the one month they have. It will tear Song Yi's heart to pieces when she figures out that Min Joon will die if he stays.

Anyway, it's going to be a looooooooooooooong week again. For some reasons, the wait seems to grow longer nowadays...

Thanks for the recaps, javabeans~! See (read) you next week!

Has anyone else noticed that the bad side-effects of kissing are greeting lighter over time? First MJ was feverish and bed-ridden, later he got weak and fainted, but in this episode he didn't get sick or pass out, he just lost his powers to teleport temporarily.

Maybe the more he kisses, the more human he becomes. So no sudden disappearing but only a normal human life span. Also justifies a whole lot more kissing, maybe a good bed scene and a future scene with babies. One can only wish.

I think it has to do with the degree of the kiss. The one which caused him to be bed-ridden seemed to have more saliva exchange than the recent one.

He said his loss of teleporting was from being hung-over, not kissing. Her light kiss didn't have any saliva impact on him. But I do agree that his symptoms are getting lighter from the big kisses. He had bad flu like symptoms the first time and this time he just seemed to faint and have a hard time breathing and it didn't last very long. So I'm hoping the same thing - that he's building up an immunity to her at least. :)

I admit, Do Min Joon annoys me with his keeping secrets (like about Jaekyung from Song-Yi), hiding the truth, and lying. I can understand why it's hard, but it seems overdone.

Suzy's cameo was funny XD

What IF because DMJ is an Alien, one of his features is that he has 2 lives. So when he "dies" on earth, only his alien form dies and he loses all his supernatural powers but at the same time his human form remains so he now becomes human and lives happily ever after with CSY! Lol

I think the comet ISON (the one that disintegrated) is the one the writer originally intended to be Min Joon's comet home. Until it got a LITTLE too close to the sun. The mentions of it were probably filmed just before it met its demise at the beginning of December, so a new comet had to be written in to fill that void.

Although making the comet that was his ticket home get destroyed could have been awesome.

Yeah, except for the part that any of his people that were travelling on that comet would also have died. That would be too sad, even though we don't know them and we want Min Joon to stay on Earth. :)

*after weeping for hours*

How cute are they together? * sniff * Would a happy ending be really that difficult? Why are you making us suffer? It's so hard to look at both of them crying. The more I watch, the more Song-Yi feels human. She is not perfect, and she's neatly well-rounded; though I wanted to shout at her a few times, MJ also. And when she said that she wants to forget him without any regrets, I felt my heart sink – I wasn't able to think of this possibility, it felt so wrong. And MJ crying after that. Oof.
I know you wouldn't, woman. I JUST KNOW.

I beg the writer to make a happy ending. I would be depressed for years after if this ends sadly.

I was impressed by how far little Kyung came in such a short while. I was worried about MJ being left out, but the flashback made me so happy! How amazing it was to see them work together! And I love Hwi Kyung's approach towards MJ. He's my favorite second lead now, he's smart, mature, sincere, knows his priorities – and knows to not mess with an OTP when he sees one.

I felt sorry for laughing, but Song Yi crying like that, with Yoon Beom supporting her, and the way our alien behaved when he was drunk, I was literally crying and laughing, saying sorry multiple times to the screen. And MJ calling SM a “foxy lady” - he had me at that. The blackout, especially when the advertisement lights went off, and seeing Song Yi resisting herself, and then kissing him. Gorgeous. Suzy cameo. And SY jealous. And that evil hyung meeting his ex-wife WITH the prosecutor. Ah-mazing. The backstory of SY script writing, hehehe. And it was enlightening to see a bit of how he would go back – IF he does.

But the way he...he said that he'll stay and lied that nothing will go wrong...ouch. It hurts to see him hurting. How painful. Owww. The feels. Don't make the possibility of his not remaining with SY more realistic. Sniff. Let me live in denial. I felt uneasy too, but I would feel cheated if he dies or something. I am not investing weeks of my life for grief.

I won't be able to live without a happy ending. * wails* How am I supposed to survive the entire week with thoughts of this impending separation that I-am-sure-will-not-happen-and-if-it-does-I-am-going-to-think-up-a-lot-of-head-canons-with-little-aliens-moving-around-dadadada-don't-spoil-my-life-with-a-bitter-truth?

In addition to all the adorable/heart-wrenching moments MJ-SY moments, I'd like to add that I did a mental fist pump when Boem stood up for SY when SM asked him to turn the radio back on. Given how the two assistants have been feeling so torn between their loyalty to SY and the need for self-perseverance with slimy SM as their boss, he must have felt like he really need to do what little he can do make the crying SY feel better.

Thanks for the recap!

Okay, I'm dying. This show! I love it so so much. But I don't want to love it! It'll just open me up to heartbreak later. I just need, like, perfect happy endings for everyone except cray hyung. Like a SY clone for KY and amazeballs telescopes for little bro and some really handsome chaebol for BJ and even um candy for the other prosecutor guy. I don't even know! Oh fine SM can have the billboard (still), but I want Beomie back for SY.

Loved Suzy's cameo! And poor jealous lawyer Jang, MJ should give him a hug or sth. And MJ and HK working together! Seriously, can they be bros! Can there be a different universe where they are bros! I was thinking the main couple was too into their own cheesecapades, and that it would be nice if they jumped a bit back into cray hyung fighting, so yay for MJ's part in that. As for SY and MJ, I can't say enough about them together, I can't, I won't even try. I actually thought this show was gonna be 17 episodes long, so I am not prepared for the extra hrgrgnnnngh that I'm sure is coming in the next weeks.

Also, I love whenever they mention Edward Tulane. That book really means so much more to me than it should.

Ha! Love the Pushing Daises reference :).

My original suggestion was that the comet was in fact a disguised space ship. I don't know. I hope that we do get more explanations. I remain curious about Minjoon's home planet. If the comet is not a ship but remains his ticket to his home, I suppose we won't be seeing other aliens. Maybe I shouldn't be thinking about these technicalities, lol! This show doesn't seem to be about all of that. Although I would like the sci-fi elements to be more prevalent in the story.

Did nobody else notice the hottie in the form of fellow Joseon astronomer at the beginning of this episode? Does anybody know who the actor is? So surprised to get eye candy treat since the show is winding down, but they did throw in Suzy cameo i guess (which frankly does nothing for me tbh).

Thanks for the recap, JB! ^^

The Joseon part was funny cuz MJ was like a giddy little boy keeping a secret to himself. XD But at least we get an explanation of how people from his planet travel to Earth.

Back to the scene on set, I love how SY still held out hope for MJ's return when he said he was leaving in 1 month. Just breaks your heart that much more when she realized MJ wasn't planning on coming back and decided to leave him there while sorting out her feelings. MJ's tears just hit me right here *thumps chest* knowing how much he wants to stay...

SY catching a ride with SM. LOL I was chuckling at the songs she sang as she sobbed her heart out. <3

The news report about that second comet has got my curiosity piqued as well. Can't wait to hear more explanations.

The whole jogging scene with Suzy's cameo was funny. Love how SY wanted MJ to leave her alone, then gets totally jealous of Suzy and ramps in between them to get him to stop talking to Suzy. =P (I watched Dream High, but I definitely like JJH with KSH more. XD)

It was another heart-wrenching moment to see SY telling MJ she doesn't wanna be with him if it's just gonna mean he'll be leaving. And you know that he loves her enough to respect her decision if that's what she really wants. </3

Love smartie HK for putting two and two together, comparing his elder bro's depression meds with Yura's. Next, I wonder if he will realize that those meds can be linked to that animal shelter Evil Hyung volunteers at. In any case, great to see him teaming up with prosecutor and even enlisting MJ's help to get his sister-in-law from the mental hospital. Yes!! You're going down, JK!!! *fist pumps*

MJ getting drunk! Was anticipating this scene when I read from the preview summary that he will be drinking. XD The blackout is more tamed than flying to the moon like ET and levitating objects and people, I suppose. But it definitely illustrated his dark mood. Grumpily yelling at SM's billboard on the balcony, asking her to move was funny, especially saying, "Oori Song Yi"! Kekeke~ And then teleporting to SY's bed, where he REALLY wants to be instead of wasting time with Lawyer Jang. LOL Poor guy... Forget the 30-year friendship... *pat pat* MJ just wants to spend time with SY. Anyway, it was touching to see how much this devastates MJ since he finally cares for someone after 400 years, and SY is equally heartbroken at the thought of the loneliness without MJ. =(

So funny to see SY hardly trying whenever in MJ's presence. First in yesterday's ep. when she dragged him home and didn't leave, and now in this ep. not trying to push him off the bed at all. Heehee... The wake-up in the morning was hilarious! MJ was so incredulous that he would be in SY's room after getting drunk and remembers nothing. *giggles* KSH played this part really well. The unexpected kiss and turn-around this time was awesome!! Just the perfect thing for SY to do to make her point about how she feels! Totally LOLed that MJ can't teleport with a hangover and proceeds to do what SY had once attempted by crossing to his side via the balcony. XD

YJ is not as resistant to seeing his dad as SY might have thought... I hope they can patch things up since he probably had a good relationship with his dad as a kid, just that he can't recall a thing. Also, glad that he tells MJ what's been going on with SY, and saying again how she doesn't know anything cuz it's her first time loving a...

(continued)

Also, glad that he tells MJ what's been going on with SY, and saying again how she doesn't know anything cuz it's her first time loving a guy. Such a sweet lil' bro. ^^

SY trying to message MJ with LINE was a great way to mirror his actions before. Glad that she decided to speak her thoughts out loud in the end, unlike MJ who had kept everything to himself last time. So happy she decided to have no regrets and make the most of the remaining month. Not that her plan to get sick of him or forget him sooner would ever work. XD But man, got my heart tugged again when MJ cried how he can ever forget her... *sob sob*

The outing was sweet. Trust SY to always initiate skinship with hand-holding, but at least MJ obliges. Keke~ Them in the car holding hands and SY getting close to MJ... <3 Totally laughed at the line-rehearsing cuz it's so obvious SY wrote that script just to hear MJ say those words to her! Hahaha... And then clinging onto him in the kitchen all the while pretending she's a dating expert when MJ knows better. =P The way she shouted his name later when she couldn't find him really shows how much she loves him. Similar to what Yihwa said all those years ago about her grandma saying that farewells have to be said in advance, SY feared that she wouldn't get to bid a proper goodbye to MJ before he leaves. But wow, he is deciding to stay!!! We already knew from past ep's that he's willing to risk his life for her, but if he really does die here, can SY handle that? Has he thought things out and still decided to stay? What if SY feels it's her fault for keeping him here when he could've gone home and lived? Eeep! The clock is ticking and I can't wait to see how things will unravel in the next ep's coming up. I know the writer will put these two together somehow, just waiting to see HOW. =) Anyway, so happy that our OTP got to spend time together and had that tight embrace at the end. Love how when SY was coming up with the script, she changed kissing to back hugging to accommodate MJ's health conditions. XD

so WAIT a minute; oh gorgeous alien is really like 800 years old? I mean he's been here for 400 years and it took them 404 years to get here. So as soon as their ship landed on his planet another ship started out? No, another ship would have already been on its way to earth when DMJ's space ship was heading back (otherwise 800 years would have passed if it was the same space ship). It's all semantics I know, but wow is he good looking for 800 years old!

CSY needs to move to his planet; she'll never age.
I could see both CSY and her brother going back with him; why doesn't he offer that as a suggestion?
although on the 400 year trip back; she would probably die.

I wonder if he could give her some of his blood and make her more alien.
I know, I know, it's just wishful thinking.

The whole chocolate milk/ telescope interaction was just priceless and cute.

I will miss this show.
The Thieves is playing at our local theatre next weekend. I can't wait; saw it on Netflix and really enjoyed it.

Now that our OTP is tucked away cosily in their beautiful holiday mansion, MJ just declared he's not leaving anymore to be with her, SY grateful and relieved, the sun is down and there's a roof over their heads, don't you wonder what could happen next....? All those intense emotions need to be smoothed over and channelled out somehow. Looking forward to the next episode (and hopefully to the end of their chastity)!

Thanks always for the wonderful recap, JB!

I can understand how it bothers you that MJ lied (by omission) to SY that it will be alright for him to stay with her on earth because I think he's motivated by his need to make her happy and not want to make her despair over something that might not happen so soon, considering how starved she is for love and how deeply she loves him.

It is a different thing if, say, my then-future-husband were to tell me that his job is like any other job, not one that puts his life on the line every time he goes to work, so that he does not make me worry, because then it would be THE LIE that I would not have forgiven him for, especially considering he almost died 3 times in the line of duty.

I would rather know HOW dangerous his job is than not knowing and be oblivious and clueless about it all throughout our 2 years of courtship and now 14 years of marriage. Knowing allows me to learn to be strong for, and supportive of, him and his love for his work.

Maybe this drama writer will write into this drama in the next episodes how SY can be strong for, and supportive of, MJ, for whatever that comes their way in the future.

After all, SY did say that she was not bothered with MJ being a criminal or an alien, just whether he loves her or not.

And who is to know who will die first, MJ or SY, since being human, SY could very well die first out of natural causes?

Cross the bridge when we reach it, is what I always tell my husband and I.

I hope its the same with this OTP.

The thing that make me so proud of this drama is that this is the only K-drama that my husband is really interested to watch since the first episode. Before this he was never interested in any K drama, and I silently hated him when he made spiteful remarks or comments about any drama that I was watching. But with this drama, I am hearing only praises from him. Not just for the lovely Gianna, but also for my secret, forbidden crush, mr kim soo hyun. Also, for the great setting, and the script too. I think my husband has finally understand my obsession now. Thank you to you from another star, for enriching my real love life.

But recently I've noticed the quality has certainly become less cringe worthy ...

This is by far the best Kdrama I'll admit to watching.

Yay! I'm glad that Do Min-joon decided to stay. I really think there's no guarantee that Jae-kyung will stop trying to kill Song-yi. When has Jae-kyung ever stopped trying to kill anyone? He was so suspicious of his younger brother in this episode. Ah, Hwi-kyung is playing a dangerous game. I'm curious to see what happens now that the ex-wife has shown up. I'm mainly wondering why Jae-kyung didn't kill her like he killed everyone else. I mean, he killed his own brother, so why not his wife? I love mystery.

I also love the main characters, especially when they have scenes together. This was a great episode! May Song-yi always be this hilarious :-).

I have a suspicion that Min-joon's mortality is somehow tied to his alien powers (have no clue about the biology/science behind it). My hunch is that if he remains on earth his powers will fade and his life span will be significantly shortened (for an alien), and conveniently conform to an average human life span. This way it would not be the dramatic cancer drama that we all fear and the show is fueling.

drunk Min Joon is the best Min Joon~~ I felt bad for lawyer jang but he sounded hilarious when he was ranting about how their friendship meant nothing to min joon!
I dont like that muc angst but I do feel min joon should tell her! she would have saved herself some near-death experiences if she knew about Jae kyung for example. knowing he might die might not be the happiest of the news but she would at least KNOW instead of him "disappearing" one day that is her biggest fear.
I have too many questions that I hope they can answer and not let in the air... first, Jaekyung... why his wife is alive and why he killed his brother? the brother presumably for the heir position but was that all? if say, the wife discovered he killed his brother -or someone else- then why he didnt kill her too?!
about the comet: whats with that "comet that dissapeared" news on tv? was that min joon's comet, a real comet or something that could happen to his comet? they take like 800 years to go to Earth and then return to their planet so how can they be returning for him 404 years later? is it another comet or what?
Why he thinks he might die if he stays? There are too many "alien rules" we dont know but I hope they dont look forced like hui kyeong ending in a comma for catching song Yi...

This episode was just one extreme to another. Funny, Sad, Frustration, Funny, Sad, Sweet all these emotions in one episode. I just love the chemistry between SY and MJ and how the supporting casts actually help to move the story along and not just there to add a twist to the story.
I am just begging for a happy-ending for this but I am trying not to get my hopes up.
A twist of fate, the air date for ep 21 is my mom's birthday, on the day that I should be wishing my mom, I know I will be stuck on this and the ending will decide my mood for the next little while. This drama is the one this year to get me hook, the one that got me completely hook that I actually went fangirl, which I hardly do, over Kim Soo Hyun.
This drama was taken over my life and I just hope that PD-nim and writer-nim will give us the happy-ending everyone wants.

I so liked the dialogue when SY was talking about how she liked H.O.T then Sechskies then g.o.d then Shinhwa because she's not loyal. I'm not either. Haaaaaa...I relate to you, lead! I relate to youuuuuuu~!

Anyhow, am I the only person who is somewhat bored of the "kajima" angst in YFAS? So happy it didn't last that long but it was a little agonizing go through that. (I suppose that was the point...)

IMHO, I enjoy the murder storyline a lot more than the love line. Maybe it's because I was always wondering if Hee-kyung was going to side with his brother or the leading lady who will never love him back. AGH. I mean, he has a much more interesting character development than our two main leads. (Or maybe I'm just Park Hae-jin biased right now...hahahaha.)

Anyhow, I'm not so perturbed by MJ's lack of alien background because we've actually got tons of his history already (on Earth, at least). And he's actually explained something all Doctor Who-sy and was basically nerding out with SY's dongsaeng on stars and comets and whatnot. Buuutt I do seriously want to know more about SY. She can't just possibly be another girl who just happened to look like MJ's first love. I mean, there's a murderer, there's an alien, and I'm pretty sure a fated reincarnation isn't impossible. THE HAIRPIN FEELS MUST BE EXPLAINED.

Ok. Two cents inserted. 8)
