Uhm Jung-hwa headlines noona romance for tvN
by girlfriday
Okay, more noona romance it is. You won’t hear me complaining. Though it does seem like cable stations tvN and JTBC are having some sort of inter-network pissing contest this year over whose noona-killer can out-romance the other, doesn’t it? Right now we’ve got I Need Romance 3 and a secondary couple on Could We Love duking it out on Mondays and Tuesdays, and then in March comes Kim Hee-ae and Yoo Ah-in’s Secret Love Affair for JTBC. Not to be outdone, tvN has now added Witch’s Romance, starring Uhm Jung-hwa (Montage) and Park Seo-joon (Warm Words).
The new drama will be a remake of the 2009 Taiwanese drama Queen of No Marriage (also called My Queen), about a 33-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man juggling a romance in the workplace. The romantic comedy will be about two people who each have scars from past relationships, and the way their romance with each other heals those wounds. Basically, it sounds like a straightforward workplace noona rom-com.
Seeing as how Uhm Jung-hwa and Park Seo-joon are actually nineteen years apart in real life, I think they’ll probably skew the age gap a little larger. Park Seo-joon is relatively new as an actor–I haven’t seen him in anything, so I hope he’s decent. Uhm Jung-hwa is already a noona-killer-killer personified, so I’m not exactly worried about her. In fact her most recent movie Laws of Attraction has her romancing a younger Lee Jae-yoon.
She hasn’t done a drama since 2009’s The Man Who Can’t Get Married, but a sexy cable rom-com seems like a fun reason to take a break from films for a few months. The actors are still in final negotiations, but the outlook is good that they’ll both be signing on.
Witch’s Romance will follow I Need Romance 3 in April.

OMG, I freaking loved the Taiwanese drama My Queen. One of the best dramas out there and the only noona romance that I actually loved. I enjoyed watching the heroines struggle between her age and loving a younger guy. But if I remember correctly, the ending was lame. I hope this new drama does a better job.

I was also a fan of My Queen, so am very excited for this remake! :)
And yes, hopefully the ending is slightly better. I don't think that My Queen's ending was terrible, but it wasn't a strong ending indeed...

Dare I ask if he has any romantic development or an OTP of his own in Warm Words?
I loved him and Baek Jin Hee in I Summon You Gold. When I researched Warm Words (because of him) I also saw Han Groo name (who I also liked a lot in Can We Get Married?) and instantly wanted them to be the side OTP (much like Park Seo Joon and Baek Jin Hee were). But that would really be pushing the luck, yeah?

I like Umh Jung Hwa a lot too. I rewatch Get Karl Oh Su Jung and pleasantly surprised to find that I still like that drama as much as I liked it the first time I watched it.
Her Oh Suh Jung's character is a lot like the heroine in My Queen. In fact the main reason (well besides Oh Ji Ho) why I love that drama is because I love Oh Su Jung's character. Her tough mean facade which hides a softie inside is quite unique.
Looking forward to see Umh Jung Hwa being mean and tough once again.

I would not call noona romances. Now a day, Korea made too many Ahjumma romances dramas. The couple in TW version has the right look for older woman/younger man.

If you saw her in Changing Partners, wowza. I had to wrap my head around the fact that she's more than 10 years older than Lee Dong Gun, the actor who played her love interest. But they totally worked. She's probably the first noona killer killer.

My Queen was actually one of those very rare Tdramas that was less of silly fluff and much more on substance. It's really high rated but underrated. I saw it forever ago and I still remember how awesome and addicting it was, probably the only Noona romance I actually ever loved.
I hope this version captures the simplicity of the original one. Usually kdramas are good with the melo and quiet moment so I'm expecting this is good.

You said everything that I felt about My Queen. Oh, the nostalgia. It made me go back and start marathoning the drama again. Rewatching it also made me feel a bit upset that today's batch of Taiwanese dramas are nothing like the older ones that had more substance, great acting, realism, and actually good comedy. Nowadays, there's so much shouting, OTTness, bad acting, bad pacing, lame plots, horrible comedy, and facepalm-worthy romance.
That aside, I do hope Uhm Jung-hwa can recreate the charm of Cheryl Yang's character. She was lovable, spiteful at times, wonderfully petty, heartbreakingly vulnerable, and a tough woman all at the same time. Cheryl did a spot-on job of making that character alive...to the point that I would cringe in embarrassment when she did, cry when she cried, felt giddy when she did, and swooned when she did, haha. More than Ethan, it was Cheryl that made me a big fan of this drama.

You hit the nail on the head, on why I no longer watch T-dramas. There was a time when T-dramas and K-dramas were head to head and some would say T-dramas were even slightly ahead.
But then they decided to go the super cutesy, baby voiced actresses, poor acting, lame plots, draggy story direction and they have fallen off hugely.
I can barely watch T-dramas now, and find myself watching the increasingly improving Chinese Dramas, of course Korean Dramas, and some Thai dramas as well.
I have been thinking of checking out Deja Vu, a T-drama that is currently popular, to see if I can actually finish one, since Autumn Concerto which was ages ago.

Me too, because the director picked the right actors for the characters. Cheryl is so cute with that role, she didn't look old for the age but she just feel old which suits the character. Ethan is young but he looks older for his age so they perfectly match even we can see the age gap.
Now, 17 years old gap, I thought it was more, Korean directors/writers just make me feel gross for their selections...Some other dramas, the female lead even look almost like granny of the male lead???? Why don't they pick someone like Jung Ryu Won or someone is in the same as her generation.

ditto to that! 'My Queen' is top on my very very very short list of taiwanese dramas which i could actually finish. hahahah, bearing some very annoying side plots & mid-drama slum, which goes with drama territory, this is one which i could and have re-watched :)
love the chemistry between cheryl yang-ethan ruan... & like Daydreamer wrote, it was cheryl yang who made this drama for me because it was all about her character's resolution & evolution.
i've love Uhm Junghwa in everything i've seen her in... especially a little movie called 'Love Now'.

In the first episode of Warm Words I was so confused about the relationships he was teasing the character that is his older sister. I read it as flirting...I saw chemistry. So I don't doubt he can pull off sparks with an older woman.
Park Seo-joon was the only reason I kept up with I Summon You Gold and now he's my reason for keeping up with Warm Words. His cries onscreen tear your heart out.
I'm looking forward to this (rubs hands together).

Firstly, omg, it's Park Seo Joon! His storyline in I Summon You Gold (with Baek Jin Hee) was the only one that interested me. He is a good actor, plus he is really handsome ;) (I thought he was rather wasted in Dream High 2 though...)
Secondly, wow, they are doing a remake of My Queen! I think Korean remakes of Taiwanese dramas are quite rare. If I remember correctly, My Queen was a sensation in Taiwan when it aired. (I think one reason was that the male lead acted in the super popular drama Fated To Love You prior to it...) But I think the main reason was the storyline and the big age gap between the two leads (female older than male) that is less seen in Taiwanese dramas. I have not personally watched My Queen, but I have heard good things about it and I have also read the novel (in Chinese). Hope to see a great remake of this drama~
For the noona romance, Park Seo Joon and to see how this remake turns out, I think I will watch this :•)

Uhm Jung Hwa unni is excellent in practically anything, and Park Seo Joon oppa is rocking my socks off right now for his role in Warm Words a.k.a. A Word from [A] Warm Heart :) He's one to look forward to and to look out for in the near future, and I'm more than positive that he's gonna be a shinig star and will spring up to the same ranks as some of the new generation of top stars like Kim Soo Hyun (the 1988-born actor, not the female child actress) and Lee Min Woo.... And no, I'm not just saying this because all 3 guys are in the same agency (KeyEast), but in all honesty, KeyEast is my agency bias.... If there is a thing such as agency bias lol

Sorry to be a party pooper, but I can't get behind noona romances.
I'd really like to see a new romcom where the noona (who acts age-appropriately) ends up with a hyung (who lacks severe personality disorders)...
Perhaps, there are melodramas, etc that portray such relationships, but I watch romcoms for the romantic/fantasy aspect.

Oh yay, Park Seo-joon finally got lead status! I liked him ever since seeing him in I Summon You, Gold...pretty much the only character and storyline that grabbed my attention and kept me watching through the whole darned thing, lol. His character had the most depth and growth overall, and was so freakin cute and endearing. Of course, it helped that he's hot and I love his voice ;) I've tuned in to Warm Words recently and watched specifically for him (since his gf is gratingly annoying and clingy).
Uhm Jung-hwa was great in The Man Who Can't Get Married, the only drama I've seen her in...but she's dependable so no worries.

Park Seo-Joon is someone I'm looking forward to seeing more of. I Summon You Gold ended up being too much of a train wreck that my undying love for Yeon Jung Hoon could not even salvage, but Park Seo-Joon held his own as a second lead and it almost seemed like he ended up being more of the main in the middle section. I miss him very much from that drama and want to get my fix, but I can't imagine myself in any way, shape, or form getting through DH2 without alcohol or hallucinogens.

As always it is interesting how dramas with a large age-difference are received dependent upon whether or not the older character is male or female. Remember "Prime Minister and I", with a 21 year difference. Here is what Javabeans wrote when announcing that drama:
-"But… together? Lee Beom-soo (History of the Salaryman, Giant) is as sharp and charismatic as they come (...). And Yoon-ah (Love Rain) is an idol star twenty years his junior (...). The age difference is intentional, if that makes it any better (...)."
Or to quote some of the comments on JB's article:
-"Ew! This match up really doesn’t work for me. Love Lee Bum Soo but the age gap is too big this sorta has an uncle/niece sorta feel to it. Ick! Casting gurus – please think about this, ok?"
-"Same, I don’t mind Yoona but Lee Beom Soo and her? They’re better off as a father-daughter pair than a couple"
-"Oh well,i love him but i hope they will find a better leading girl more his age…"
-"And why on earth is there such a huge age gap, im all for age is just a number and that it shouldn’t matter in relationships, hell we just saw sizzling chemistry in “I Hear Your Voice” and “Cyrano Dating Agency” but for me its going to be hard trying to believe that someone who is a 40+ president will relate/rely on someone who is so young.."
-"Forget the difference in acting caliber. There’s nothing that says that she MUST be 20 years younger than he! It’d be far more believable to have a mid-late 20-something finally giving up her dream than a 23 year old who’s just barely out of college. Please.
Also, as for Sound of Music, Julie Andrews is only 6 years younger than Christopher Plummer. There was no indication of a HUUUUUUGE age gap between the characters either in that film. Intentional age difference for PM & I, my arse.
Koreans and their fixation with virginal girls. The day a drama casts a hero 20 years younger than the heroine AND hits the 40% ratings will be the day I reconsider my abhorrence for this particular Korean predilection."
Not to say that everyone her was against PM&I, or the age difference in that drama. But there is certainly a clear difference in how a love story with an older woman is greeted, compared to how one with an older man is.
