Kolorful Palette: Confrontation in pink [I Need Romance 3]
by Fanderay
Welcome to the first Kolorful Palette, a weekly Dramabeans column that will feature artwork of our favorite dramas. Each week I’ll find a scene that I like and draw it for you. A couple of you may recognize me from my blog (also named Kolorful Palette) but for now I’ll primarily be posting here. This week’s drawing comes from Episode 11 of I Need Romance 3. Make sure to click the image above to see it at full size!
Although this isn’t a happy scene, it’s a scene that made me happy. A moment of sincerity is always a good thing, and although Wan has tried his best to be honest with Joo-yeon, it’s a step forward to see him also being more honest with himself. There’s a difference between caring about someone and actually wanting to fight for them, and it feels like Wan is finally crossing the line into fighting territory. The best part of this scene might be that bright fuchsia coat though. It took me a minute to even register that it was his, and I keep telling myself that he only agreed to wear it because he knew it would look good on her. Or maybe it’s a loaner from Lee Min-ho.
One thing I love about Wan and Joo-yeon is the parallel between their childhood and adult relationships. Both of them have acted as an unlikely guiding force in the other’s life, and they have both been incredibly lucky to have one another. How many neglected kids never get that perfect babysitter to help them grow up right, and how many adults have derailed their lives, but have no one to force them back on-track? As an adult it’s expected that Joo-yeon should be able to take care of herself, no matter how child-like her needs may be. Thankfully Wan is the pushy type, and even his towering height seems like a symbol that he’s the grown-up now. Unfortunately she doesn’t seem to fully comprehend that yet, and I am left agonizing over her obtuse determination to ignore the man right in front of her. Sigh.
It was an unfortunate week for me, where it seemed all the best scenes to draw were non-OTP in nature. I’d be okay with that, but Tae-yoon needs to be waaaaaaaay nicer if he wants to make the cut. My jaw literally dropped when he told Joo-yeon to stay at Se-ryung’s event because of work. Even if he has no romantic feelings for her whatsoever, shouldn’t he have something nicer to say as a friend? Up until this point I’ve actually liked him, and just assumed he was a little clueless when it came to matters of the heart, but now I’m not so sure. I’m starting to lean towards “jerk with a deceptively warm smile.”
There were a couple other scenes that tempted me this week, for all the wrong reasons of course. This first one because it’s grumpy Wan with a giraffe (’nuff said) and this latter one because it reminded me a bit of myself this week. I was besieged by some horrific stomach flu, and if I owned a “PLEASE” shirt I would most definitely have been wearing it while sprawled out on the bed.
Since this is my first Dramabeans art post, it’s a bit of a test. Feel free to sound off in the comments and let me know what sort of things you’d like to see, and what you’d like me to talk about.

Hello Fanderay~
And a warm welcome to you! As soon as I saw your (screen) name, I wondered why it looked familiar. And then I realized that I had actually visited your website a few times, and I had always appreciated and enjoyed the artwork I had seen there. I look forward to what you will have in store for us. I admire creative people like you.
So (because I don't want to assume), the picture you drew is the very first one, and the last two are screencaps, right? I really liked the fushia coat. I didn't realize it was JW's (I didn't remember that, I guess), however, I remember her wearing it, and it is a very nice coat. I do agree with you that between JW and JY, JW is the adult and I do LOVE that he is taller than her. There is just something about him having to look down (kind of) to talk to her (when he is standing, and she is not wearing heels), and about the way he carries her. I like the connection you made between his height and his role in the relationship.
I hope that you will be inspired by more scenes from INR3. I do love the pictures/screencaps you chose for today, JW pouting is so cute, and I love the other picture of him being pensive (was what it seemed to me). I actually love all three couples, and I hope that some nice scenes of Lee Woo Young and Jung Hee Jae, and of Lee Min Jung and Ahn Min Suk will prompt you to draw them as well. I have loved how LWY is comfortable around women, and how he can read them (for the most part). I love it when his face lights up when he sees JHJ, though I have not always liked how (pushy at times) he can be with her. He does mean well however, so I give him a pass.
I find Ahn Min Suk really cute (and I love that he wears glasses), and I hope that he will be coming around and will want to be in LMJ's life with their baby (on the way). I do like Kang Tae Yoon (to an extent), especially when he smiles, because his eyes smile as well. I loved the scene where JW was laying on JY's lap (on the couch), because he had just caved in to her wanting him back home, even though he had been mad at her not long ago. That scene conveyed to me how much JW really likes being close to JY, not only physically, but emotionally as well. I think that he longs for that.
And that sentiment has been reinforced to me every time (3 that I can remember right now) JW has had "a bed scene" with JY (when he sent the text for her, and then he was hugging her on the bed, when they "slept together" in his room, and when he found her in the morning in his room, and he just wanted to snuggle with her). I love that about JW: that he will be by JY's side, he will push her, prod her, confront her, comfort and console her, take care of her (all that cooking and cleaning *sigh*), and at the same time, he will show her how much he enjoys her presence, and how much he enjoys skinship with her. There is a tenderness in those scenes that I just love. Those scenes speak for themselves, no words are needed.
My other question for you is: would you consider drawing from past dramas as well, or would you (rather) only draw from currently airing dramas? I was just wondering... I really loved your insights about the picture you drew. It's like looking at Kdramas through artwork, quite evocative.

Nice comments, I agree with you on pretty much every front!
I'm definitely up for drawing from past dramas. Sometimes currents dramas just aren't up to snuff! The only hard part is finding good scenes to draw, since I have to go back through old drama episodes to find something I like (I have a memory like a sieve, so simply remembering is not an option!). I'm definitely open to suggestion though, so if you're ever watching something old and see something great, let me know. I'll consider pretty much anything; just don't be offended if I don't end up doing a scene...sometimes I just don't think I can pull an image off well enough for it to be worth it :)

Also, that was the first scene that LDW filmed for this drama, when he came out of his military service. He had to prepare for that, rehearse and that was the first scene between the two actors.
Apparently, the day he left the MS was the day he started to prepare for this drama. That was mentioned here on DB, I believe.

This is going to be long, however I will post it:
So nice to hear back from you, Fanderay~
Point taken, I will not be offended if I make some suggestions, and you ended up not making a drawing of it. I appreciate the warning, and my feelings will not be hurt :-) As I was going through my morning (after I posted my comment), I realized another reason why I love it when men in Kdramas (or in entertainment shows like "We Got Married") lay their heads on the lap of their wives or of the woman they like.
Most of the times (especially for the 1st half or so of the drama), the hero (I am generalizing here, and of course we know that we have some exceptions to this rule) is cold, rude, mean, distant to the heroine. And then at some point, you have those moments, when they lay their head on the heroine's lap, or they have a platonic sleepover. I always pay attention to what leads up to that moment and to what happens during that moment. And what I have noticed is that regardless of what stressful situation or what conflict happened before that scene, the men seem to relax at that moment. They look more vulnerable, more open, and there is a child-like quality to those scenes, and they seem trusting of the heroine at that moment.
At times, it is when the hero will open up about a painful secret or memory (Hyun Bin's character in My Name is Kim Sam Soon did that, when he revealed that his brother had died in a car accident), or they will simply chose to rest for a few minutes or the whole night (if it is a sleepover). I love those scenes, because there is often a gentleness and tenderness that shines through, and we don't always see the hero be like that (until later in the drama). So, I personally love it, when a men or a men-child is allowed to show that side of himself. I feel that it is a strong way to show someone that you care about them, and that you want to be with her. Those very often tend to be quiet scenes (or speaking in a soft voice), and I just like the mood that is created.
Some of the scenes I have seen and that I have liked: 1-Hyun Bin in MNIKSS (he does it three times, twice with his head on her lap), 2-LSG as Lee Jae-ha in The King 2 Hearts, in ep. 16 (such a beautiful scene: the acting, the directing, the music, everything worked), 2-in the King 2 Hearts again, King Lee Jae-Gang puts his head on his wife's lap, when they are at the vacation home, 3-The scenes I mentioned in my first post, 4-There is also a really nice one in "Lovers in Paris," which was just beautifully acted and shot, 5-There are some good ones in Coffee Prince (from the lead couple, and one from the second lead couple), 6-There are four scenes in You From Another Star, however it is in three of those scenes that we see how Do Min-joon really feels about Chun Song-yi (content and in love). In the other one, he looks worried about his powers waning. 7-Oh, and I just remembered, Hyun Bin (his character) also lays his head on the lap of the 2nd female lead and she cleans his ears (and the recapper of that drama here on DB explained that it is something that is commonly done in Korean culture). I haven't seen the laying of the head in US shows (or movies), or in French series or movies (or not as much). It seems more common in Kdramas however. I find that interesting...

Well said! I'll definitely be watching all those lap scenes carefully from now on. I've never thought about them that far in depth, but I've certainly always liked them!
I actually wanted to draw the lap scene in I Need Romance 3, but it wasn't quite aesthetically pleasing enough. A key element for me is that scenes have to be visually pleasing, so I end up not choosing a lot of great moments.
Unfortunately I must confess to never finishing King 2 Hearts. I don't even remember why I didn't like it, so maybe I'll give it another shot.
Meanwhile, I'll keep my eyes peeled for a similar scene on your behalf :)

Hello Fanderay~
Thank you so much for your response. I didn't know whether or not you would read my last comments (life being busy and all), so I was happily surprised to see your comment, albeit late (on my end).
I am glad that I was able to make you think about lap scenes in a different way. I find them to be evocative, and I always feel that there is so much I can say with just one scene. One of my favorite lap scenes is still the one with LSG and HJW in ep. 16 of The K2Hs, mostly because everything (as I mentioned earlier) worked together well in that scene (the acting, the directing, the lighting and the OST). I really loved the contrast of someone who was the king (fictional king) of a country that belongs to the G20, going into a fetal position on the lap of his beloved. He looked overwhelmed, scarred, hurt and he felt like he was at the end of his rope emotionally. At the end of that scene, HJW's character leaned on him, kind of enveloping him with her tenderness, her love, and her embrace felt protective of him. It felt as if she was shielding him from the world, for those few minutes (or however long) he was on her lap.
I also loved that HJW's character is actually someone who is physically stronger than LJH (LSG's character), and she is better skilled then her fiance, when it comes to martial arts and fighting and defense techniques. However in that scene, she does not approach her fiance as the highly capable North Korean officer that she is, but as a woman deeply in love, who understands what her man is going through, and wishes she could protect him, emotionally and otherwise. That was how I read the scene (among many things anyway).
I apologize for going on and on about that scene, as you can tell, I think I could write a whole chapter, on that scene alone. I really liked The K2Hs. It is not a perfect drama, and the villain was made to be cartoonish (in my humble opinion) unfortunately. I do think however that it is one of LSG's best works and I really loved the cast in that drama, especially all the veteran actors. It is also one of the few dramas in which an African country is portrayed accurately. Not romanticized, yet accurately depicted (that depiction is not long at all, and I know some people who missed it. It is a depiction that is accurate with what was going on in the news at the time. The issue that was raised was quickly denied by LJH, and he gave the reason why, and that reason was plausible).
I love political thriller movies and dramas, so The K2Hs is my cup of tea. I am not sure how you would feel about giving it a 2nd try. I would encourage you to (if I may). That drama has wonderful characters that could win you over. There are some funny scenes and many heartwarming and moving ones. I also really loved the lighting in that drama. Some of the scenes (to me) are beautiful particularly because of the lighting.
If you do not get to watch that drama, you can also just watch the scene in ep. 16, starting at 14mins in (14 mns into the ep.) until 18mins and 39secs in. Watching the drama from the beginning helps in that (like in most dramas), you have an understanding of how far LJH and HJW's character have come, and what they mean to each other. I will be getting off The K2Hs train now, :-) Thank you for reading yet another comment of mine.

One last comment about The K2Hs, and then I am leaving it alone. I learned many things watching that drama, and I found out that they made a reference to the special connection that Korea has with Turkey (the country). I had been reading the blog "Ask a Korean," (a very interesting blog), and so I was glad when I understood that reference. It is just really nice when information one has been reading in other sources, is made relevant in a drama or in a movie (and you actually get it) :-)

Fanderay~
The end of my (long) comment:
I will stop here. I love those scenes because I feel that regardless of what the hero has been saying to the heroine up to that point, those scenes let me know how he really feels. If I ever suggest a scene, I will make an effort to mention the episode I have seen the scene in, and I will try and be precise about where I saw the scene, so you won't have to watch the whole episode. Thank you for reading yet another long post of mine :-)
And these are the scenes I was referring to, in the King 2 Hearts:
1-Ep.16---http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa324/girlfridaydb/drama/2012/king2H/king16/king16-00224.jpg
2-Ep.16--http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa324/girlfridaydb/drama/2012/king2H/king16/king16-00235.jpg
3-Ep.16--http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa324/girlfridaydb/drama/2012/king2H/king16/king16-00237.jpg
4-Ep.7--(There is a playfulness in that picture. What made it tragic was that the King and his wife ended up dying, after inhaling Carbon Monoxide, I believe. They didn't know they were dying, and they died in peace. That becomes a painful and traumatic memory for Lee Jae-Shin, the princess).

Hi Fanderay! Welcome!
Looking forward to seeing your artwork. Simply fantastic. ...... And thank you so very much for sharing it with us!
I like the idea of posting artwork and then including a little comment about that particular drama scene. ..... It's particularly interesting when one isn't watching that specific drama. ....... There aren't enough hours in the day to watch everything of course, but with this, you get a little snippet of what's going on and that's always fun.
Thanks once again!

WOW! Your art is incredible! I thought it was a screen cap at first, but then I realized from other comments that it was your work! Amazing! I truly respect anyone who can make art look so real, and you did! Inspiring! I wish I was an artist too, sometimes, but the most I can do is stick figures. Lol. Seriously, you are a phenomenal artist!

Hey now, don't knock stick figures! I did an ongoing series of stick figure drawings in highschool of my friends and I (they were sort of like comics and we'd put them up in our lockers).
Oddly enough, I always envy artists who make great art that isn't realistic. Even when I try to make something a little more impressionistic, I pick away at it until it ends up more realistic than I intended ><

Is it cus of K con? When I saw Kcon I was impressed by the wide variety of fan activity. Maybe you were afraid of covering too much content but delivering low quality. But I think it's very possible to cover a variety of reactions to the same content.
It's late, I might not make sense. HAHA

Ah, also if you don't mind, if you could please let us know what medium(s) you used for your drawings, that'd be great!
I'm very interested in art and used to do someone in my free time, but haven't in years due to life and work. I went to your other blog and saw some of the artwork you did. You're amazing with some of the portraits that you do, there's one where I could tell due to the background that it was a painting, but the portrait was so realistic in that size.

This was primarily done on the computer in Corel Painter with a Wacom tablet. I did the initial pencil drawing on paper and scanned it in. The other paintings on my blog are done with a very basic travel watercolor setup (If you go to "About this Blog" there's a photo of the kit).

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the warm welcome! As you've all figured out, yes, the first image is the drawing :)
Don't worry, it'll probably be more obvious in weeks to come. I don't find that dark images lend themselves particularly well to pencil lines or mediums like watercolor (it's all about the light!).
How do you guys feel about the image size? The original was actually 3300px wide, but I doubt anyone wants a picture quite that big. I went with 1920x1200 since it's a common monitor size and I like to give people the option to use the images as wallpapers or crop them down if they want. I guess some of you Mac users may want some absurdly huge image size though?
Thanks again for the welcome. Hopefully I can come up with something good for next week :)

FANDERAY!!!!!!!!!!
I'm your fan.
'nuff said.
On a side note DB is sure getting bigger and better.
I think I am feeling part envy, part proud, part giddy and of course always a part in love with DB, JB and GF.
Now that I see DB and JB rhyme. Heeheehee.

Oh my god! It took me three looks to realize that was a painting! Geez it's so purrrrfect!! Brilliant!
And if you had painted Wonnie with the giraffee I'd have jumped into my laptop and hugged you wherever you are!! Now I'm wishing for you to be watching some of my favorite shows just so that I can imagine what you could be converting into those gorgeous gorgeous fan-arts! I think I'll end up looking at scenes differently now! *hugs and kisses*

Excellent job, Fanderay!
Like everyone else I thought the first picture was a screencap and even closeup it still looks amazing photo-like.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

I've been on your blog before!
I saw this and was like OHO! This art style looks familiar. I'll be happy to see more of your posts here in the future :)
I'm jealous you can paint so well digitally (it's digital, right?). Maybe I'd actually get some work done if I could do the same, lmao.

Hurray for Fanderay! What a wonderful addition to DB! Ever since the seeing the awesome L7CS fan art, I've thought that it'd be wonderful to have that kind of creative expression regularly included here on DB.
Fanderay~ So nice to see your work again (my first encounter with it was over on Softy's blog 2-3 years ago). As everyone has said, your artwork is truly impressive-- but I'd also like to add that your writing is great, too. Thank you for offering to share your time, energy, and talent with us... we're lucky to have you!

DAYUM.
At first, I thought the first image was a screencap showing a drawing of it later, but then I looked closer.
BLEW MY MIND.
I have huge respect for artists who can trick the eye and make someone do a double take.
Amazing work!

So, I started reading this, read something about artwork and I scrolled down looking for said artwork and was starting to think I got duped because I couldn't find it. Then it hit me! OMG!!! How awesome are you!!!
