Joo-won offered lead in Korean remake of Nodame Cantabile

Ooh, interesting. Dramaland is pursuing a Korean remake of hit Japanese drama (and manga and anime) Nodame Cantabile, and while it’s only in the very early stages, already the property has generated a lot of buzz about potential casting.

The first big name to be floated as the clumsy but lovable heroine was IU, but her reps swiftly put the kibosh to those rumors, saying that she had yet to receive a formal offer. The same back-and-forth met the latest news about Joo-won being offered a leading role (“It’s still early in the process!” “He hasn’t even received a synopsis!” “Oh wait, yes he has!”), but his agency did eventually confirm that he’d been offered the part.

I haven’t seen the classical-music-themed Japanese drama—which was quite popular in Korea as well—but I have seen the anime, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it after expecting something simple, loose, and unassuming. Nodame Cantabile is set at a music college and centers around students studying to become professional musicians and composers, with a quirky set of characters led by heroine Nodame and the uptight perfectionist she falls in love with, Chiaki.

The story has a witty, sardonic touch to balance out the wacky cast of characters, which is great in grounding the zaniness (as Japanese dramas can get rather surreal and over-the-top in their comedies). It also makes lovely use of classical pieces (which I love, as a big fan of classical music) and has an understanding of the music without necessarily getting bogged down in it—above all, it’s a story of blossoming relationships and personal growth. And now I’m pretty much going to finish writing this post and hunt down the live-action drama now that this news has reminded me to watch it.

I can definitely see why IU would be the go-to name to play Nodame, the chirpy, cheery savant who can barely read music but has a magical touch with the piano. IU has the ability to play quirky and bumbling in a relatable, charming everygirl way, as she’s done in her previous roles (Pretty Man, Dream High, You’re the Best Lee Soon-shin).

And now that Joo-won is up to play Chiaki, I can absolutely see him as the piano virtuoso with the sterling reputation, who harbors the secret wish to shift his attention from playing the piano to conducting. Their relationship kind of reminds me of IU and Jang Geun-seok in Pretty Man, actually, with her basically throwing herself at him all the time and him gradually getting attached, despite pushing her away in disdain at the outset.

Manga and manhwa adaptations have been all the rage for years now, but they’ve met with mixed success so I really hope they do a proper job of remaking Nodame Cantabile, which I find too charming in its existing versions to muck up with a bad version now. I also recall that Beethoven Virus was touted as a pseudo Nodame series when it launched, but that show sorta became all about Kang Maestro (for good reason) and aside from being vaguely about classical music I found it very little like Nodame.

Producing the remake is Group Eight, which has basically cornered the market on manga and anime remakes (see: Boys Before Flowers, Tamra the Island, Goong, Pretty Man). They’ve licensed the property and are aiming for a broadcast in the second half of the year. Fingers crossed, y’all.

I'm in. NC is my all time favorite jdrama, manga, anime. Everytime the anime rerun on my tv i will watch it no matter what.

Now who will playing Milch the snazzy pianist genius.

So no words for which station tv that will air this. When news about this especially JW been offered released, few of my friends hate it so much. They love the original one and hate anything remade....

Suddenly I thought of Park Chul Min as Milch, and he fits!

Anyway, now we're talking, with Joo Won in the picture. It'd be awesome if he plays Chiaki.

Ah, the original Japanese version of Nodame Cantabile... how it brings back memories (you can bet they were good ones). It'll be quite difficult to get close to the standards the original has set, and I quite honestly don't believe that anybody could play a better Nodame than Ueno Juri. It's extremely relieving to hear that IU will not be taking on the very difficult challenge of playing such a unique, intricate character. Because while she is both "clumsy" and "lovable", she is not... dark(?) enough to play the perfect Nodame. Quite honestly, though she is an accomplished and successful singer, what the character of Nodame needs is a multifaceted, professional actress that can play the almost overly unique character of Nodame in a relatable way.
I, personally, haven't seen any of Joo Won's works, so I can't really comment. Obviously, however, I'm extremely apprehensive about this remake. I would love to experience Nodame Cantabile again... and fall in love with it all over again with a new cast. As much as I would enjoy that, however, I would much prefer not feeling that a dark shadow is looming over the fate of one of my most beloved dramas.
Group Eight did well enough with their remake of Hana Yori Dango, but that story was much more straightforward, with simpler (albeit lovable nonetheless) characters that weren't so high maintenance (in the sense of their depth... because obviously, they were high maintenance rich boys).
I'm going to sit here and cross my fingers that this remake isn't too much worse than the original. We'll see how it goes, I suppose.

Hmm I've only seen the anime, but I feel IU is a good fit for Nodame. She was brilliant in You're the Best Lee Soon Shin, she has some extremely well refined acting skills and I think if the script is written properly, and under good direction she could pull off a spectacular Nodame.

I am of course expecting someone who can play Nodame absolutely brilliantly though. I'm open to anyone, I just hope the production company is as well. They shouldn't have to worry about popularity since they are continuing a really popular 'franchise'? If that's the appropriate term.

Ohhhh...have mixed feelings about this.

Nodame Cantabile is my all-time favorite J-dorama. If ever this project pushes through, I just hope the kdrama can equal, if not top, the Japanese version.

Am ok with Joo Won playing the Chiaki character. Have not seen much of IU, though I take Javabean's endorsement of her playing the Nodame role.

It's my all-time favourite jdrama as well, as well as my favourite manga. I doubt anything can surpass the Japanese version, but I'd be happy to be wrong.

If IU takes the role I hope she can go full out the way Nodame does. Pretty Man was a start but she'll need to really let loose. Kind of the way Jeon Ji Hyun is doing in YWCFTS.

I like Joo Won and think he could do a good job with Chiaki, but all in all I think this is one drama that really didn't need a remake as the original is perfection.

Me too, I don't want a remake since Jdoramas are like a whole different universe from Kdramas. They tried to make remakes but mostly all of them wasn't successful or one bit resembling with the original (frankly, they're just ridiculously bad in my opinion and the originals are ridiculously awesome).

But if I have to pick a Korean actor who could play the role of Chiaki or would be at par or compete with Tamaki Hiroshi's performance, it would be Joo Ji Hoon 'cause I remember his roles in Five Fingers which is a bad drama but he was quite good in it and Antique Bakery - his character was cynical and eccentric kinda like Chiaki. A for Nodame, I don't think anyone could replace Ueno Juri's Nodame because it's hard to play a character like that by not overreacting or being just plain annoying. In short, she played it perfectly even though that kind of character can come across as those things.

i don't think a korean remake of nodame cantabile is a good idea, mainly because all korean remakes are just plain awful.

i could be proven wrong but i don't think they'll just pull it off. nodame cantabile is one of those mangas and animes that can be really hard to translate into live action.

group eight dramas are notoriously popular but they are not necessarily good on their own, and definitely pales in comparison when put against the original.

in addition, i don't think there's any korean actress who can do nodame as she is written, she's just too different and unique.

I was going to say that not all Korean remakes are awful, but then I remembered that I just recently watched Hana Yori Dango and I wept, not really, at how terrible Boys over flowers was compared to HYD. I haven't seen the Jdorama versions of Playful Kiss and To the beautiful you yet, so I can't pass judgement on those. I love Playful Kiss though, it wiped the bitter taste of KHJ's Yoon Ji-hoo from my mouth and introduced me to the adorable Jung So-min.

I wouldn't say all remakes are bad. Queen's Classroom was a pretty good remake that IMO surpassed the original. But yeah, the majority are mediocre at best (Playful Kiss) and mind-numbingly idiotic at worst (BoF).)

Me too.

Joo Won seems perfectly fit for Chiaki.

Please cast a great female lead. Someone who is naturally adorable & young, not someone who is older but playing younger role and trying hard to look cute. The female lead need to have a good background in music too..

I think that they will cast an idol for the female lead here.. IU seems like a close choice, just to throw some names.. besides IU, probably SNSD Seohyun or real actress like Park Bo-young.

I never saw Nodame as adorable, and rarely as cute. I saw her as an elemental force - like a hurricane. You don't especially need a background in music to play a musician, and I would hate to see this part go to some cute and fluffy idol girl just because she can warble a tune and dance onstage. Please. It has to be an actress who can fill up a room with her energy, and push people along regardless of her outward lack of social skills and basic hygiene. I mean, she stinks, people - she never cleans because it is just not important. And I would hate to see them "clean up" Nodame just so some idol can retain her sparkling image.

She barges through all your doors and messes up your life with a kotatsu. She focuses with untouchable intensity then bursts out of it with the power of the big bang. Her music can run fast and furious then flow smooth like running water and then suddenly go topsy turvy like a playful clown. She's like a pervertic child. She is rarely normal, choosing instead to zip between the extremes, but she's also fragile and vulnerable and Chiaki sempai is her pillar andmis also the one who sends her into the pits of despair.

I have never seen a character quite like her, with only Kyoko of the Skip Beat series coming a close second to intensity and quirkiness.

I hope whoever takes on her role can go all out and be crazy on screen.

Park Bo-Young would be great :) I'm not impressed with IU and since I loved Nodame Cantabile, the person who will play Nodame's character will carry the drama on her shoulders as she is a central character.

Ueno Juri is unconventional as an actress and has always been respected for her range and capability. For the Korean version, they need a similar actress.

Joon Ji-Hoon or Joo Won? Both are awesome for me!

I think it is important to note that Nodame is definitely not an aegyo character. She is clumsy, whimsical, passionate and determined all at the same time, but for the wrong reasons too haha.

Also, the chemistry between Nodame and Chiaki was incredible and you will root for this couple through thick and thin. That needs to be taken into consideration too.

Lastly, the supporting characters are not merely to fill in the gaps in the story, this is not only about Nodame or Chiaki, they are all connected in the musical world of Nodame Cantabile and I hope they pay special attention to select the actors/actresses who will play them.

All the best to the team, though I am initally against this due to the horrible experience of watching a few Korean remakes (Exhibit A - Dr Jin (OMG *facepalm*))

The girl from reply 1997,the idol can do it.

0

I've watched both the jap anime and drama versions. I think Joo Won would be a perfect match too! Can already imagine him being the perfectionist Chiaki and lol-ing away :p Park Bo-young seems good for Nodame. I hope they don't cast IU though. Nodame is quite wacky. Not sure if IU can pull it off. Maybe Goo Ara will pull it off too, based on her Reply 1994 performance.

Okay I'm conflicted. This is one of my favorite dramas ever. I like Joo Won, but Tamaki Hiroshi is the only Chiaki Senpai for me tbh. I don't think anyone can touch the flawlessness of the jdorama so I'm mostly against a remake.

But this casting sounds a lot better than the random idol who can't act I feared they'd get. Though it does really come down to the writing and if they stay faithful to the source material. I worry about what the writers might change. I fear love triangles...

well there was one innocent triangle in the drama that did not much take anywhere the oboe player I think

ah it is all about these characters struggle to come over fears and regrets and prove mostly to themselves that they are worth something . not so much about what others think or do but an INNER conflict

Required fields are marked *

There were all kinds of love triangles, although they were mostly untraditional and not developed in the typical way (they bubbled beneath the surface, rather than creating a main conflict that the OTP had to deal with like in most other dramas) – like the gay guy or the old guy hitting on lots of women (incl. Nodame). I'm so sure the Korean remake is just going to eliminate those, which is exactly why it's not going to work.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Eliminate or play them up one. I don't think they can do subtle and nontraditional. I'd be surprised if they did. Nodame does have the cliched love triangles (the oboe player who thinks Nodame is wonderful is so your typical second lead nice guy) and even the bitchy ex-gf, but they were done in a really interesting way. Even the ex-gf was never a threat and I believed helped them out in some way (been a while since I watched/read it) and was a really minor character when all was said and done.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, he did like her for a chapter or two. There was a guy in France too (and Tanya tried to make a move on Chiaki too to hilarious results). Though all of it was played as a joke and there were no serious third party threats. There are so many other issues to overcome, character growth, friendships and conflicts to explore. I hope they stay true to the story.

I haven't watched too many of their drama adaptations so I'm not sure what changes they have made, but I've never heard anything good they've done in them.

No no no no no no no.

This is a drama that should not be remade.

Even if my favourite Korean actors were to be cast in this remake, it's just not going to work.

The original is flawless, the casting was utterly perfect and it's so quirky is such a Japanese way that you can't transfer it into Korean (or anything else). It is going to end up something else that's just going to suffer in comparison and lose that very bizarre charm the original had.

They tried with Kimi wa Petto and it was such an utter disaster.

X_X

I had vague hopes with You're My Pet, but was scarred by that.

If an independent Korean filmmaker with guts and creativity were to tackle this, there might be hope, but a TV drama, with too many limitations and restrictions and people rarely ever showing the kind of gutsiness and originality that this would require to make it into something with its very own charm... I just have no hope that this going to happen.

(Group Eight's remake of Boys before Flowers doesn't make me any more confident either.)

Anyone know who is supposed to be directing this?

Boys Before Flowers was a MESS of massive proportions, but that had a lot to do with the acting and plot sloppiness - I actually thought they transposed the setting pretty well into Korea.

And the Korean version is literally the only version of this story that makes me tolerate and even root for the Soujiro/Yuki equivalents, I wanted to strangle them both in every other version - jdrama, manga, tdrama, you name it. (they had to make up for going damp squib with the main love line somehow)

Required fields are marked *

I'm afraid I never made to the end with the Korean Boys Before Flowers – it just didn't work for me.

Hana Yori Dango certainly had its flaws – I like it and it's one of those 'must watch' dramas, but I wouldn't say it's perfect. It just had a similar kind of quirkiness that just doesn't translate well.

Nodame Cantabile, on the other hand, is perfect.

0

Hana Yori Dango (and I can safely say this, after getting through all 30something volumes of the manga) has a weirdness, but also an innate tendency to makjang. Which is why I think it worked for so many people, when the adaptation happened.

Nodame is altogether a weirder beast, but I do hope they leave its wackness intact, and don't tone down Nodame's grabby tendencies.

0

@alua... the Japanese live action drama of Hana Yori Dango wasn't that good of a adaptation of the original manga. At least Boys Over Flowers was true to the source material until episode 9 when the writer decided to adapt the Japanese live action drama. Thats the reason why the 2nd half of BOF felt like the 2nd season of HYD. They should of stick to adapting the manga. Seriously.

0

If they successfully Koreanise it a la Boys Before flowers, I will be impressed.

But the casting prospects alone (for once, just ONCE, can they give a lead role to an actress for acting ability and not based on CF deals and idol status?) make me nervous even though I really like IU.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Agreed. Even with Joo Won, I cannot imagine the remake being better than original (and if it is not going to be better/ on the same level of awesomeness, why bother?). I love both anime and J-drama, they are fantastic and so in Japanese style, that... well, to top it is unimaginable :D

I'd say, let Koreans create Korean dramas, where they are the best... What's up with those remakes...

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I just don't see how you can translate something like Nodame to a Korean context without losing something vital. Sense of humor, storytelling tropes, acting and visual style... There's too much of a gap. Hanadan didn't turn out well, and I'd argue that it's not nearly as innately Japanese as Nodame is.

I mean, I want it to be good and I'm trying to find a little sliver of optimism - good casting would really help, Korea, and that means no wooden-but-popular idols - but I can't imagine how on earth it'll work.

IU was actually really endearing in PM despite the whacky characterization they released. I thought she had really good chemistry with JGS. In fact, I am yet to accuse her of having bad chemistry with anyone - yet... I just can't see her with Joo Won.

I think he's a good actor but he has no musical background whatsoever which makes me feel there are so many better fits for this role. It's always just nice to see an actor being able to play an instrument rather than having a body double do it. Although I can't judge since I haven't seen the Jdrama and don't know how significant that would be overall.

I'm not gonna say this is highly exciting - I never was a fan of manga inspired dramas but this can be an exception... Maybe.

Going from the jdrama, most of the scenes with Chiaki does not involve him playing an instrument at all, most is centered on his conducting. Of the instruments, the piano is one of the easier ones to fake since you don't actually have to film his hands playing the keys. In any case, Joowon's background is musical theater (though concentrated on singing), so I think he will do fine with the role.

I'm actually excited for this, as I didn't like the j-drama over-the top humor but I did love the core of it, so I think with a k-drama twist it could bear its core and true heart. Plus I love Joo Won and he is an amazing actor so this will be great to see unfold.

I just started watching the Jdrama last week. I wanted to see what it was about. I'm about halfway done and I really like it. Love the idea of IU playing Nodame. Hana Yori Dango is my favorite Jdrama series and Boys Over Flowers didn't match up (it wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good), so I'm hoping Nodame Cantabile turns out well.

I haven't seen the original drama but I've read the manga, it was really good! I'm happy there's going to be a kdrama adaptation~ Great news~ Looking forward to it!
I'll probably watch the Japanese one - which is apparently guaranteed to be perfect - afterwards, because I don't want get my hopes up. I'm not quite sure if I trust Group Eight enough to make it work (judging from their previous dramas D: ... ) .

But I can definitely see Joo Won as Chiaki~ and IU would be cute as Nodame. I've liked both actors in pretty much anything they've done (altough ironically I disliked most of their dramas D: ... ) so I'm definitely tuning in if this is the cast.

But I guess nothing is sure yet...

oooh, this could be good (the original was)

But more important to me is, who's going to play Nodame? IU is not a bad choice (she can act and this is her wheelhouse) but I would like to see the part going to a fresh face who has yet to make the breakout into leading lady status (i.e. most 19-24 year old actresses who are not idols).

Or if we're talking idols, I would not mind SNSD's Sooyoung in the role (she's a good enough actress to pull off the 'I'm a mess' vibe, even though a big drama like this would probably want Yoona if they're SNSD-casting)

Have a lot of disappointment when Kdrama remake a jdrama... Boys over Flower... Hana Kimi...... Proposal Daikusen.... Kimi wa petto...

All of them have lost their originality charm....
Jdrama over the top comedies and also borderline sexual innuendo is one of their charm that was hard to be translated to Kdrama....

I am worried

never mind that Nodame is overtly trying to get Chiaki into bed the entire show and physically assaults him at every turn (which was always funny) and she gets violently rebuffed. If they try to make it earnest and lose the slapstick wackiness it's going to turn out horrible. that zany, over-the-top feel is what made it so fun to watch and balanced out the seriousness of their emotional journeys and their musical discovery.

I really enjoyed the anime and live action of Nodame, which was responsible for rekindling my love of classical music by introducing me to a number of works and composers I didn't know.

I think Kim Seul Gi would make a great Noda Megumi, and in a lot of ways that character shares a lot of commonalities with the webtoon editor Seul Gi played in "Flower Boy Next Door." I doubt she will get the role, but in the manga and the anime Nodame is a tiny little powerhouse of nutty, but Seul Gi's ability to sell the kooky and experience in comedy would be great. I like Ueno Juri, and she did a good job as Nodame, though I think she was too tall to play her faithfully. Not that that is really something to complain about

nodame cantabile is my favorite jdrama of all time, and unfortunately will never work as a successful kdrama without serious script and character revisions.

japanese humor is ridiculously zany and over the top- but japanese actors can play those characters to where they are still serious and lovable and relatable. there isn't a single k-actress i can think of that can believably make messy, immature nodame still likable and lovable. chiaki should be easier to cast, but what about the hilariously lecherous stresemann? this won't work as a k-drama for cultural reasons among others, and frankly i see no need to adapt perfection (apart from money and hype).

Totally agree, they are not a lot of kdramas that come even close to japanese humor.
Wild Romance And History of Salaryman are quite wacky but they're still nowhere near Nodame Cantabile.

On an other note, i hope only the beginning of the story will be adapted, and not the Paris storyline. As a french watcher of kdramas, the only thing worse than hearing koreans slaughter english is hearing koreans slaughter french.

OMG It will be reeeaally challenging (and risky) for Koreans to make their own version of Nodame Cantabile. It is like one of the BEST J-dramas in J-Dramaland.

Like many of you here (who posted on this news), Nodame Cantabile is my all-time favourite J-drama. I watched it countless times, got the specials and the movies as well... Even watched the anime and read the manga because the drama was too good! It usually works the other way, that is, I often read the manga and THEN watch the drama, but this time, the drama was SO good.

Joo Won as Chiaki would be great. I can see him in that role. PLEASE SAY YES.
I don't don't if IU would really fit the role. Ueno Juri, the Japanese actress who played Nodame, was awesome. The actress who'll play the Korean Nodame's got to be as good as Ueno Juri, or else, I don't think it'll work. I'm not saying that IU is bad, but I don't think she's good enough. IMO. I can't think of anyone in Korea who could fill in the role. Maybe Eun Ji (Reply 1997)?

And again, Koreans had better do a great job with Nodame Cantabile... If they do another awesome-j-drama-turned-to-utter-joke as they did with Hana Yori Dango, I will cry.

THANKS for the aaawesome news jb!

I haven't been able to take out time to watch the jdrama either, but it is my favorite manga/anime of all time. The one I can relate to so well. Ninomiya is a genius.

I have seen the movies, though. So I don't think this remake can match that. I loved how realistic even the jdrama seemed and I loved how the leads were.

I...am not sure if this is a good idea...

I mean, like BOF, it can turn very popular and all that, but I am afraid it won't catch the depth of the story that drew me in the first place.

Joo Won has a stage musical background and IU is a singer, which may help them if they're chosen for these roles.

Both are adorable and endearing and I can see them having the chemistry to pull this off.

The only drawback I see here is Group Eight. They make a mess of most dramas, Tamra the Island being the exception.

The only K-actress I want to see in the role of Nodame is Im Joo Eun who has shown she's capable of range from the funny to the dramatic. But knowing how K-entertainment world, that's a hopeless cause as any. Oh Korea, why don't you recognize the insane talent that is my Ms. Im!

Joo Won is a bit too young for me to pull off Chiaki senpai role since there has to be a bit more worldliness to that character. With that said, I'm so secretly hoping Kang Ha Neul is a contender cause from Monstar, we know he can believable play an instrument plus he does that aloofness well.

Im Joo Eun would be perfect and could probably do this role in her sleep. But I don't think she has any name value in Japan though, and since this whole drama is designed to appeal to them, I don't think it's a possibility that she'll get the role :(

Why would this remake be designed to appeal to Japanese people?

I'm sure they'll try to sell to Japan for the sake of big money, but Japan already has a perfect original. They'd be better off making it appeal to Koreans who have never seen the original, because it's going to be an uphill struggle with anyone who has watched it.

I agree with your choice of Im Joo Eun!
She looks the part of Nodame and has a slight resemblance to Ueno Juri. I've only seen her act in mostly supporting roles and in Soul 2009 but I believe that she has a WAY BETTER chance to capture Ueno Juri's perfect portrayal of Nodame than IU. I get that IU is cute and very fresh faced but I don't see her doing Nodame's craziness without looking too trying hard or overacting.

Now for Chiaki senpai. If I were to cast my vote, I would pick Cho Seung Woo. I think he is the perfect korean Chiaki for me for a lot of reasons.

1) He can act (Chiaki's serious face and his zany reactions to Nodame's antics)
2) He started in theater so I think he will be able to slide into Chiaki's music virtuoso character quite easily
3) He has the same aura as Tamaki Hiroshi and is the same age. Though if he we to take the part now, he would be older than Tamaki Hiroshi when he played the part of Chiaki
4) Last but not the least, I just have this gut feel that he would have a higher chance of coming close to Tamaki Hiroshi's performance compared to Joo Won.

But saddly, GROUP 8 and korean casting agents will never see this... huhuhu... they only cast the staple/go-to actors and actresses. I liked their casting for Tamra the Island, BOF and Goong. So please don't disappoint me in casting IU again just because she's a singer and is one of the hotest idol stars today.

Please, please just try giving Im Joo Eun and Cho Seung Woo a chance to audition and I'll be happy. >.<

Uh oh.. to me Nodame and Chiaki Senpai IS Ueno Juri and Tamaki Hiroshi. They potrayed the character so well and too long that its became their image. Cannot imagine if its being remade.

But because this is inevitable, I guess Joo Won is an ok choice for Chiaki, since he's so versatile and can emote anything, anywhere. IU is a lazy choice I think, but if she can potray the weirdness of Noda Megumi, then all is fine (I'm very sure IU can do cute and bumbling). Another actress that have crossed my mind is Go Ara, she potrays Na Jung in a way that has similar feel to Nodame. Ah you know, its easy to imagine her as Nodame with that crazy short hair.
So I guess as a big (BIG) fan of Nodame Cantabile, I hope the Korean adaptation would (at least) not dissapoint.

Btw, you should watch the live action JB! Its outrageous but its so fun and charming. Love it.

I also don't see a need for a remake of one of my favorite Japanese doramas. However, if they're going to do it then I trust that Joo Won can pull it off as Chiaki. True, he has a different feel from Tamaki but I think he can make the character his own and perform brilliantly like he has done before. As for the female lead, I really hope it won't be IU. The series will only work if we have an excellent actress like Ueno Juri who can bring the manga character to life- spazz, spunk, heart and all. My interests are surely piqued.

If you google it, you can find it subbed in various places.

Voice doesn't matter. In fact, musical talent is what's probably least important – Nodame plays the piano and Chiaki does too but mainly conducts in the drama. Those things, however, can easily be 'faked'.

The real difficulty is the multidimensionality of the characters. Nodame isn't just 'quirky' and 'cute', she's..... totally off the wall, random, perverted, sweet, frustrating and irritating, mesmerising and more all at the same time. I don't know how to put it into words, really, just watch an episode and you'll see what I mean. Same with Chiaki, he seems like serious and straight-laced at the first glance, but he's not that simple at all.

I ALWAYS thought Joo Won could totally play Chiaki (along with some other up and coming actors like Sung Joon or Lee Soo Hyuk). All uptight, proper and totally HOTTTtttt.

IU is simply NOT versatile or whimsical enough to play the effervescent and outlandish Nodame!!! Since observing the wildly successful response of Miss Granny, I think Shim Eun Kyung would be totally perfect!!! Maybe a bit on the younger side, but I DO wish she would consider a drama...She'd pull it off, and it could really propel her career as a new Hallyu icon.

Sorry to double post on my own comment (lol), but I have to mention that the leads don't have to be musically talented in order to play the parts. Ueno Juri only had some lessons when she was younger (although she prepared especially hard for her role as Nodame), and Tamaki Hiroshi didn't have a musical background. That's why I always found it especially impressive that they SEEMED to know what they were doing and every camera shot of their fingers flying over the piano keys or baton swinging or violin playing seemed pretty legit to the amateur eye (although avid musical fans said that they were totally playing off, lol).

Therefore, I think the primary goal for casting the right actors is to find the right acting ability and images that really fit the molds of Chiaki and Nodame.

Required fields are marked *

I agree. I don't really see why people think they need a background to act the part. It's acting, they can act like they know what they are doing. Nobody suggests actors playing doctors, lawyers or cops need a background in the field before playing the character.

I know I'm throwing this out there but I've always think and a lot of my Japanese friends agree that Park Yoochun could pull off Chiaki Shinichi persona. Part of it being he's goofy and able to make all those silly and over reacting faces and part of it because he plays the piano himself.

As for Noda Megumi..wow,IU has never cross my mind but I think it's better if they stick to a real actress coz I've seen IU, yes Nodame is cute, but she isn't always bubbly. Just my opinion but Park Boyoung would be a suitable Nodame.

On the other hand, if JooWon really does take up the role, it'd be interesting. It'd be a totally new dynamic for him to be in a comedy and with his musical background, I think he's able to pull it off. That aside, in my opinion, I still want to see Yoochun as Chiaki-senpai..^^;;

I never finished the drama but I was attached to the manga for some time and am really familiar with the characters.

Joo Won wouldn't be my first choice for Chiaki. I'm surprised! Like someone else, the first person that came to mind was Joo Ji Hoon. I think he can be serious and comedic and he would be great. I was also thinking if only they would throw this on over to Kim Jae Wook as well and let him show everyone what he can really do. As for Nodame, I admit IU would be cool but I would love it if they cast Im Joo Eun who would be crazy in the best way. Not to mention we already know she can rock short fly-away hair, LOL (and actually play the piano???). I want to see her in something after she was wasted in THAT show.

I think I will try and finish the drama (and it's movies). The first time I watched it, I hadn't watched J-dramas in a while or had just finished a serious one and the zaniness threw me for a loop. Also Nodame's messy room gave me anxiety, HAHA. But I love the leads, so I'll give it a go again. I've been meaning to anyway.

I'm groaning at Group8's attachment since they haven't done a manga adaption that I've really liked, so I don't have high hopes for this.

Ha! I just started rewatching (for the third time) the anime series. I've seen'm all - live action, anime, movies, and have read the manga.

I also would love to see Joo Ji Hoon as Chiaki. I think he's much more suited to play the role than Joo Won, who I love, but he's a little too 'warm'. JJH can do comedy as seen in his movies.

As for Nodame, I do think IU would be a good choice, but what about Moon Geun Young as Nodame? I'm thinking of her role in Mary, and I think she might be a good choice.

But what made Nodame particularly good was the chemistry between the leads. Also, all of the support characters were so well fleshed out.

I'm skeptical about Group Eight. They've had mixed results so far with their adaptations leaning towards the badly done.

Nodame Cantabile is in my top 5 favorite jdrama of all time! They have already destroyed my number 1 and 3 jdramas. They MURDERED boys over the flowers and just threw up all over Hana Kimi. I don't think I can take another disaster.

Joo Won would be good idea for Chiaki. But the key for this drama is the chemistry of the main characters and how that translate into to their love of music. They better not but a bunch of horrible acting kpop idols in it and start making up stuff that is irrelevant to the story. All i have to say is please do not screw this up!!! Just in case I'm going to start re-watching the jdrama.

Just have to say, Korean version of BoF is what made me blacklist Lee Min Ho and Gu Hye Sun on my list. I hated that version so much, words cannot describe it. I am baffled that this company keeps on re-making Jdrama w/ the same ingredients. They should just leave Nodame Cantabile. It's perfect the way it is. There's no need for a remake.

I can see this.
He could be that goofy.

I know she doesn't fit physically, but I would rather have UEE. She definitely can be goofy and adorable..

No way. I would like to see her in it though; as one of the other characters.
