I Need Romance 3: Episode 9
by girlfriday
Is it the rebirth of a friendship, or the start of a dangerous game? Two old frenemies bury the hatchet, which naturally starts to complicate the love square. We just got our heroine to start feeling feelings again. Is it too much to ask for one day to process before new problems come hurtling at us? Why do I even ask.

EPISODE 9: “Don’t make me regret coming back to you”
Wan tucks Joo-yeon into bed after she cries herself to sleep. She gets repeated calls from Tae-yoon (his number is saved as “venomous snake,” though I’m pretty sure Wan knows who’s calling), and he can’t help himself and finally answers it out in the hall.
Unsurprisingly, Tae-yoon isn’t calling to apologize for his sucktastic non-date stunt earlier, but to give Joo-yeon more work to look over before a last-minute meeting they have in the morning. Seriously?
Wan erupts and tells him that Joo-yeon came home crying and just now fell asleep, so there’s no way he’s waking her up for that. That is so going to backfire on you later.
At six in the morning, Joo-yeon wakes up and sees the email from Tae-yoon and screeeams Sweet Potato awake for answering her phone last night and saying embarrassing things. She scrambles to get ready for work early, muttering incessantly at Wan the whole while.
Wan trudges to the kitchen to pack her breakfast, and offers to drive her. She runs to the car and shoos the breakfast away to get some work done, snapping at him with a mocking, “Food, food, food, food, food!” because he nags her so much about eating.
It’s his turn to blow up at her, pointing out that he’s out here in his pajamas and slippers, just so that he can make sure she’s fed and off to work on time. The argument is sincere, but I love that when he orders her to take it back, she takes it back and then silently mocks him some more.
She runs off to work and leaves her purse and breakfast behind, so Wan has to chase after her with all her stuff. He runs into Tae-yoon and hands it off to him instead, adding the helpful fact that it’s breakfast for one, so he can’t have any.
Tae-yoon just looks Wan up and down from bedhead to bedroom slippers in that silent judgy way that says it all, leaving Wan suddenly insecure. He wonders what Joo-yeon sees in that guy, and then assures himself that he’s way cooler. Insecure Wannie so adorable.
Tae-yoon plops her stuff down and hands Joo-yeon the meeting preparation that he stayed up all night to do. He grabs her by the wrist and drags her to the cafeteria to make her eat breakfast, which is of course his petty way of getting back at Wan (whom he repeatedly calls “the man you live with”).
He asks if she really cried herself to sleep, and if what he did last night was upsetting. I can’t believe you even have to ask, but I guess it’s better to ask than to ignore. He mentions that he hasn’t seen her cry since she was a rookie, and then says that she has more tears than he thought. You’ve seen her cry twice in ten years and that’s a lot of tears? What planet are you from?
She corrects him—he made it so that she couldn’t cry in front of him, but there’s no such thing as a person without tears. She admits that she cried, though she says she was just annoyed at having to be the bridesmaid to someone else’s romance.
He apologizes and says it’s because she’s the person he’s most comfortable with, because she’s not swayed by emotion and he can rely on her. The words land with a thud in her heart, and she thinks to herself that it’s not a compliment anymore for him to say that he’s comfortable around her.
She narrates that ever since she’s discovered her feelings, even the sensation when he holds her hand for a brief moment is completely different. She runs her fingers along her wrist where he held her earlier.
“Will every daily interaction with this man feel new? How will I endure the discomfort?” She decides that she’d rather not have her feelings uncovered if she’s to be rejected.
Se-ryung is ever so quick on the uptake, and asks Wan over lunch if Joo-yeon likes Tae-yoon. She figures that it’s pretty natural for such a close working relationship to turn into mixed feelings on both sides, and needles Wan to intervene because he likes Joo-yeon.
But he says if that’s what Joo-yeon sincerely wants, he’s not going to stop her, which Se-ryung doesn’t understand in the least. She’s jealous of any woman who gets near Tae-yoon, but none more than Joo-yeon.
She compares the feeling to seeing a pair of shoes or clothes she wants, and buying them so she can put them in her closet before someone else can have them (which says so much about her, doesn’t it?) and Wan has to tell her that people aren’t like objects.
She sighs that if he won’t do something she’ll have to, and though she might not have a way to stop Tae-yoon, she does know how to stop Joo-yeon. Hm, should we be worried?
Tae-yoon gets chewed out at the meeting for backing Joo-yeon’s new brand, and afterwards she promises to succeed so that he doesn’t get any more flak. He might be a terrible boyfriend but he can be a good boss, and he tells her to be decisive and learn from her choices, and that she doesn’t have to worry about failing because he’ll always back her.
She notices that he still has chronic gastritis, and rattles off a list of foods he should be eating to counter the symptoms. He’s surprised that she just knows this, and asks, “Do you like me?” Ack.
It catches her off-guard but she rolls with it like the question is absurd, which of course he accepts at face value because they’re always joking about that stuff. He puts his hands on her shoulders and assures her she’ll do a great job with the new brand, which is right when Se-ryung walks in and discovers them standing uncomfortably close.
She’s here to do an interview with Joo-yeon on their new brand, so they both wear their biggest fake smiles as they tell the interviewer how they just clicked because they’ve been lifelong friends, and how their tastes have always been similar.
Joo-yeon doesn’t see why Se-ryung had to go so far with the syrupy friendship backstory when their original plan was to keep it professional. But Se-ryung says she wasn’t lying at all—she’s always seen Joo-yeon as a friend, then and now.
Ooooooooh. This is your plan? To cozy up to Joo-yeon so she can’t steal your boyfriend? If that’s what this is, you’re worse than I thought.
We go back to her conversation with Wan, where she totally admits that this is her plan. Augh. Wan tries to tell her that she can’t use Joo-yeon’s feelings that way, but she doesn’t see anything wrong with doing her best to get what she wants.
So after the interview, Se-ryung tells Joo-yeon that she was right about everything and it was all her fault. She swears that she really wants to be friends and do a good job with their project, promising to do what she can to help get her a promotion.
She calls her breakup with Tae-yoon a cooling-off period, describing it as a normal occurrence in their relationship. She sounds really genuine about wanting to be friends again… and Joo-yeon falls for it hook, line, and sinker. Aw, that’s gonna hurt, but I’m glad you trust her anyway.
Min-jung has decided to cut all ties from Min-seok, and gets a new cell phone entirely. When he can’t get a hold of her, he starts to piece together the few things he knows about her from meeting her online, and starts digging for clues in her messages, like the fact that she works in fashion.
Hee-jae looks furtively across the room at work, trying to signal over at Min-jung and Joo-yeon to ask for supplies because her period is starting.
They’re trying to be discreet, but then Woo-young (who finally got a haircut, thank goodness) walks over and opens a drawer where he’s already stashed a pack of pads.
Their jaws drop as he says matter-of-factly when each of their periods start and how it affects their mood and diet in different ways. Hee-jae is mortified, while Joo-yeon and Min-jung are mostly impressed, and wonder if he’s maybe gay. This, of all things, is the thing that makes you ask that?
Hee-jae jumps in and blurts that he likes women, which just turns their curiosity over to her: “How does she know that?”
Wan asks Joo-yeon when she’s coming home, and I love the way she lights up when she reads his texts. She tells him she wants seafood pasta for dinner, and he laughs because he’s already bought the ingredients for that exact dish. He sends her a picture of dinner supplies: “I’m one step ahead of you. Isn’t this what they call soulmates?”
Min-jung tries cautiously to bring up her baby-decision-making woes, and Joo-yeon shuts down as always. But this time Wan’s words niggle at her, and she remembers what he told her about just being there to listen to her friend.
So she tells Min-jung that she might not know the answers, but she’ll listen, and encourages her to say what’s on her mind. Aw, good for you. Min-jung was just dying to talk to somebody, and tears spill out as she admits she wants to have the baby but is terrified of how it’ll change her life.
She used to not be afraid of anything because she was only ever making decisions for one, but doesn’t know how to go forward when everything scares her. She’s afraid that she’ll never date again, and says she thought about quitting her job because of the scrutiny of being single mom, but then realized she actually really loves her job too much to do that.
Joo-yeon brings her a tissue and tells her that no matter what she decides about having the baby, she shouldn’t quit her job. She promises to be on her side and fight with her, against all the people who talk behind her back. Look at you, being such an awesome friend. I’m so proud.
Min-jung: “Are you on drugs?” It’s so funny that she’s touched and frightened at the same time. Joo-yeon adds with a smile that Min-jung will never stop dating till the day she dies, so there’s no need to worry about her love life ending.
As Joo-yeon sits by Min-jung’s side like a good friend and then comes home, she narrates: “Ever since Wannie came to my side, many things have changed. I no longer have to come home to a dark house. There are no more nights where I have to watch the home shopping channel alone.”
Wan greets her as soon as she comes in, and then she orders him to shut his eyes as he unbuttons her dress in the back (after which he stands there with his hands up in the air, ha). She narrates that she no longer needs to struggle to get a dress off on her own.
She flashes back to the night he held her as she cried, and narrates: “I’ve become a person who no longer needs to hold back her tears.”
She’s even become someone who enjoys cooking and eating at home, as we watch her make dinner with Wan and actually have fun making pasta. Over dinner, she asks about his mom, who hasn’t responded to her emails.
He says that’s par for the course with Mom, who’s too busy running her company for stuff like that, and adds that she’s probably never even heard his music. He still remembers his first CD sitting on her shelf, still wrapped in plastic.
Joo-yeon looks at him sympathetically and says he grew up well despite that. He grumps that she’s talking to him like he’s a kid again, and asks how she’d like it if he said she grew old well. Touché.
He says that it’s because he grew up in a warm, loving home, and that if there’s anyone to credit for that, it’s her.
She comes up to his room and asks to hear his music, and when he plays one of his songs for her, she suddenly remembers the thing he mentioned to her when he first arrived—about going to see the giraffes.
When he was little he had drawn a picture of a camel and mistakenly thought it was a giraffe, and she made fun of him for not knowing the difference, wondering if his mother never once took him to a zoo.
He says forlornly that his mom is too busy, and tries to cover up the camel’s humps in embarrassment. So Little Joo-yeon takes him to a toy store and buys him a stuffed giraffe to show him the difference between camels and giraffes, and on their way out, it begins to snow.
Back in the present Wan flips through his journal and says no, it was a real giraffe at a zoo, pointing out the very accurate picture he drew. She laughs that he doesn’t remember anything correctly, and says it was definitely a toy store and a stuffed giraffe.
He asks when she’s going to take him to a real zoo then, and she says she will soon. She asks to hear more of his music, and he plays her the Happiness song that she taught him when they were young. This time she can put a feeling to the music: “It’s happy.”
She says that he must’ve been lonely in the States and she didn’t even know that she was lonely here, “But I came to know it after you arrived—that I was lonely before you came.”
She admits that she doesn’t really have huge expectations from life, perhaps because she’s become a robot like he said. “And life is still as hard as it always was. But now I don’t think—will it get better tomorrow? Instead, I know that things are good right now, that this one moment is happy and peaceful.”
She rests her head on his shoulder, and he says with a smile, “It’s a relief that you’ve learned how to feel the present moment.” She murmurs that she can’t fall asleep here, and dozes off anyway.
He notices that she isn’t sleeping with balled-up fists today, and kisses her hand goodnight.
Hee-jae decides to bring her ex-boyfriend some food when her mom makes one of his favorite dishes, but then discovers that he already moved out of his gosiwon after passing his exams. That sucks, but I also have no sympathy for you when you’re the one who drove him away.
Se-ryung plays up her friendly act with Joo-yeon, and their next show is a huge success. The first person she thinks of is Tae-yoon, of course, and braces herself before going up to see him.
He’s already waiting for her with congratulations, and she can barely contain her tears as she tells him how much she wanted to do well for him. He offers to buy her dinner, and she counters that she deserves more than just a meal, and asks him to spend Sunday with her.
Tae-yoon: “Are you asking me out on a date?” She smiles, “Yes, go on a date with me.” And around the corner, Se-ryung overhears their conversation and she realizes that her plan backfired.
At home, Joo-yeon tells Wan that she cottoned on to Se-ryung’s ploy from the start—she knew Se-ryung wanted something from her, and that she probably knew about her feelings for Tae-yoon.
So she decided to beat her at her own game and accept her friendship, and use it to get what she wants. Yikes. You did what?
Wan’s face falls. She says she never once forgot that the workplace was a battlefield, and used Se-ryung’s friendship against her. She says she has a date with Tae-yoon this weekend, and admits that she wanted to hurt Se-ryung.
Wan: “Which is first, your desire to hurt Se-ryung or your feelings for Tae-yoon?” Joo-yeon: “Both.” He tells her to just think of her feelings for Tae-yoon and not think bad thoughts, but she asks defensively what’s bad about wanting to get even when Se-ryung is doing the same to her?
She says that people who get stepped on step on others, and that’s what makes the world go ’round. Wan: “No, you’re wrong. The reason the world goes ’round isn’t because of people like you. It’s because there are people who are patient, and giving, and loving. You’re the same as Oh Se-ryung. You’re no different from her.”
Wan: “Don’t make me regret coming back to you.”
COMMENTS
Just when I was so proud of her for learning how to be a good friend, she stoops to Se-ryung’s level. That was a blow, especially because I was feeling so sympathetic when it seemed like she was falling for Se-ryung’s lies. I hated that Se-ryung would stoop to faking a friendship with her to block a budding romance with Tae-yoon, but I loved that Joo-yeon fell for it (or so I thought), because it showed that she was still innocent and hopeful on the inside, and wanted to see the good in people. I took it as a sign that she was willing to take risks with her heart in both friendship and romance, and despite knowing she’d be hurt, it mattered more that she was willing to trust someone again.
But grar, it turns out she’s just as bad as Se-ryung, and countered with fake friendliness of her own, and with zero remorse to boot. When Se-ryung pulled that move I was mad, but when I found out that Joo-yeon did the same, it broke my heart. Granted, I don’t think that Wan is always right, but his outburst at the end of the episode really needed to be said. I wanted her to be better than that.
I say all that because I love her like she’s a real person, gaping insecurities, prickly defenses, and squeaky robot emotions all. Overall her character arc as a heroine has a really nice progression, and it’s great to have a character so flawed that just rooting for her to find herself is enough of a conflict to drive her story. Finding love along the way is sort of the extra reward, but the journey is about her discovering her own happiness and learning to be comfortable in her own skin.
She still has miles to go, but the fact that she took Wan’s advice to heart and actually listened to Min-jung and offered her support no matter what choice she made—well that’s the kind of friend you want to keep your whole life. I know it was two steps forward and one giant step back today, but there’s hope for you yet, Shin Joo-yeon. Don’t succumb to the dark side.

Im with Joo Yeon. Her reaction is natural, who doesn't like to get even? She's been hurt, it may be a long time ago but the pain is still there. The pain is worst coming from a friend than a guy. Yes, her method might be wrong as what Wan told her but can you blame her??
And people learn from mistakes. Its what makes a human, human.
Things would get better if everyone would lower their pride. Talk it out. Its not easy. Truth hurts right? But its easier to forgive and forget if people would be honest.
OMG. This is based from experience. Ugh.

I agree with you too. I think she is actually being smart - as the old saying goes, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." By recognizing SR's deception, she is just protecting herself. And maybe if SR learned how it feels she would change her ways and realize how much she is hurting people. Also, although Wan has a point, he also knew that SR was going to play JY again, yet never warned her. I think if he really wanted to protect her from being hurt again, he should have said something.

True. That was a smart move. Ballsy!! She's been alone for a long time. And that's her way of protecting herself.
Actually if I were her I wouldn't now how to react. Betrayed, again? Used? Dunno which one comes first but I'd be mad, hurt, sad, disappointed.
And yes again, for the first time I disagree with Wan. He said Joo Yeon was worse than Se Ryung because atleast SR admits she's a bad person.

Plus the fact that he expects JY to be sincere and trusting yet allow SR to be a meanie! Double standards yo~
Seeing how SR and him are on friendly terms, so why does he try so hard to change JY but let SR go on hurting JY? (not that the change in JY is unneeded, i love the growing-to-feel JY actually!)

Perhaps he has accepted the fact that SR cannot be changed. Really, you can't change people, you can only suggest a path and then it is up to them to choose. He probably realizes that SR has always been a selfish b**, likes it that way, chooses to be that way, and so will always be that way. But JW remembers when JY was something more, and he is giving her the choices in hopes she will remember how to make the right ones.

I'm with Joo Yeon too. She'll probably change later for the better but not in one sudden Kdrama Personality Transplant. :)
Honestly, if she forgave Se-ryung at this point, and that quickly, I would hate her character for being inconsistent.
This way is better.

That's why I love this drama. Its realistic. Their character flaws?? I bet everyone can relate to them. Well not so much for Wan, he's too peeeerrrfff!! I've never met someone like him. And Id love to be wrong. Come on world, prove me wrong. Give me my Gugumaaa. Haha.
Yeah, one step at a time. It would be unbelievable if her transformation was that fast. She was characterized as a crustacean robot.

I would hate her character for being a naive fool who's stupid and incapable of learning from past mistakes. It's part of growing up to learn that people can suck and to learn to discern the good from the bad.
Go, Joo Yeon, for learning, growing, and turning the tables. With manipulative people like Se Ryeong, giving them a dose of their own medicine is the only way they'll pause to reflect on their character flaw.

I may be in the minority, but I actually think she should do just that. Forgive SR. I don't mean that she should be stupid about it or allow SR to manipulate her. I don't even have a problem with her going on along with SR's friendship bit. However, keeping all these festering feelings about revenge and anger inside will only harm JY in the long run. Besides, SR is right about one thing. It was high school. If I recall myself I was not the most loving person during high school sometimes even selfish. Probably like most girls that age. So I feel like to hold something against SR is a bit unfair? And I say this as someone who has been in a somewhat similar position to JY. It's a waste of time and energy to make your own internal world toxic by engaging in thoughts of revenge or spreading karma around. She can allow SR's flaws to infect her or JY can choose to rise above it and be a better person. That is what JW is so disappointed about. And probably the fact that SR's plan didn't work without him having to get his hands dirty lol.

I agree with you but you can say that probably because you had some form of closure, either with yourself or because the other person apologised. I don't recall seeing or hearing any part of a sincere apology from SeRyung. All I got from her was 'sure, I 'wronged' you, now forget it and forgive me even as I continue to torment you'. SeRyong's wierd logic of not clarifying things doesn't help either.
So, I do hope JooYeon learns to let go, but till then, revenge is just part of the course of coming to terms with it. Let's just hope she doesn't take too long. Wan, do your job.

No, I never had any form of closure or an apology unless you consider closure forgiveness. I've seen the destruction that resentment and anger can wreck on people's lives when they allow it to fester. I don't believe that revenge is ever healthy. Then you are just continuing the cycle of negativity and malice that someone began in you. It's better to just end it and forgive. That is what I think JW is trying to say to JY. JY needs to get beyond her past. It's not easy, but in the end she'd be happier for it than choosing to allow a past poor friendship influence her present relationships. Of course, revenge is not the same thing as justice, though I think that mainly limited to court of law sort of situations and certainly does not apply to the JY/SR fight.

Closure does not necessarily require an apology from the other person. I know, some people just cannot apologise. When I meant closure, I meant that you came to terms with it, decided for yourself that you can let go. But it's not easy, I understand, and JooYeon is not at that stage yet. She's still smarting from what she probably deems as unreasonably horrifying betrayal and she hasn't moved on yet. Revenge is one way in which she may assuage her feelings while trying to make sense of SeRyong's behavior. Not that her actions are right but we are all still human. And when we're blind with anger and confusion with little understanding, revenge can seem like justice.

I wanted that at some point, SR and JY reconciling. In an acceptable way. SR is not even sincere about it and JY knows it. That's why Im on her side.
Maybe now at their age, what happened in the past is petty. But still, everybody deserves closure as what @peeps said.

Some people just don't have it in them to give you "closure." Some people can't give much of anything, unless they see a clear and immediate benefit to themselves. In those cases, if you make your own resolution and move on.

I believe JY will forgive SR. Just not now. Since SR is insincere, what's wrong with JY doing the same? It's an act anyway. It's logical that JY behaved this way. If SR never offer the fake friendship, does it mean JY won't ask TY out eventually? The reason why SR tried to patch with JY was to prevent this. So it's inevitable anyway.
The drama chose this route probably is because it's more interesting. The build up to future conflict. Look at Wan's reaction! Wonder what will happen if TY and SR know about it.
I just love this show. So much it's the first time I'm posting at this website. Haha

I completely understand her too. If she fell for it again, she would be like those naive leads who gives the wrong people chances.
And Wan is right in his own way but he didn't make an effort to protect her from Se Ryung. So even if the whole an eye for an eye thing is true, personally I'm all for revenge haha..

Ditto! I wouldn't like her to be the candy girl heroine. If you are naive in your teens, it is cute. But if you are naive in your 30ties, it is just stupid. I like to watch an heroine who knows how to stand up for herself. Another method would be better, but well, this one wasn't too bad neither.
And besides, for me is much more important that she knows how to listen to her emotions and to her friends, rather than to be disappointed, angry and tricked by a person who is supposed to be her (fr)enemy.

She recognises the type of person SR is, refuses to be played for a sucker and gets what she wants/needs from SR professionally, how is that a bad thing?
I agree with Wan a bit, hurting SR shouldn't be on the same level as JY's feelings for TY, more of a tiny side dish than part of the main course but I have no problem with how JY dealt with SR here. SR had it coming the moment she decided to try an manipulate JY by offering friendship.

Some of my questions for this ep.:
1-“If that’s her sincerity,” meaning if that’s how she feels? What does it really mean when Koreans say that? 2-Does anyone know where I can find the instrumental piece playing when WY is talking? I love it. 3-Did JY really win/do well (the broadcast), on her own, or did that success happen in big part because of SR? Or maybe tricking SR was part of her strategy all along.
I so loved this ep. I love that things are not easy, on the way to finding love, and hopefully keeping it. JW is so mature, can we clone him? I would like one of him, please. And the children who play JW and SY (young), so cute!!!! I really loved the conversation between JY and MJ, how ackward it started, and how personal it became. Hearing MJ state her fears, concerns, I really loved that moment, and I had tears. It was well acted, I was moved.
I loved seeing how JY is growing (and learning as well), until I found out at the end that she only wanted to pay SR back. I do love however that SY is not portrayed as someone who all of the sudden is this good person. We still have 7 ep. to fill up, so I am liking where the show is going with SY. I also like that she is still not interested in JW at this point, not in dating him. JW continues to win points for being mature, patient and wise.
I loved the scene with WY and the girls. I cringed some: it is supposed to be thoughtful (his gesture), however, aren’t there some boundary issues with his gestures? Are they cool like that (that he can buy pads for them)? And they are his sunbaes. How appropriate is that? (Just wondering). Apparently the 2 sunbaes didn’t seem to mind, even though JH was mortified. And he knows their sizes? (For the stockings).
I find it interesting that TY has been around SY for 10 years, and he still doesn’t know her well, like the fact that she might cry (or want to). And I have the feeling that he might use SY some more (to get back at SR). Also, he seems to have caught on to JY liking him. Let’s see what happens with that.
I am in love with JW. I love that JY’s life has changed for the better since JW has been back in her life. And JW is quite domestic, and he makes her like being at home, which, swoon (I love being at home too). I love this particular drama, the tender moments in it. I also love the OST. I liked how lover boy (the cute one with the glasses) went on a detective work, to find MJ. Well done! He is so cute. The men in this drama…

this was such an amazing episode. We were all in lala land happy go lucky thinking things were changing and they are but not as quickly as this episode led us to believe which is far more realistic. I'm feeling a little tricked but it's so good and plausible that it works.
Joo yeon can't be changed over night and I wouldn't want her too. Just because she's beginning to feel more doesn't mean she has blinders on(thank you writers) With all her experience she shouldn't have been easily fooled by oh seyrung. So Im happy that she was on too her from the beginning and used it to her advantage.
Wan is so awesome I wish I had a wan at home. Except he bakes cupcakes and cooks pizza.

Thanks GF! I think JY is consistent in the adult period too, however I can NOT for the life of me understand how someone can change that much from her young self. I mean she was so warm, the reason how Wan could grow up so loved (goodness, the little Wan is sooooo cuteee!!!!), then to the person who doesn't even know how to respond to her friend's trouble by even merely giving a hug? I understand she's had that horrible sunbae as a boss (which btw, I still can't warm up to the guy, and his acting doesn't help), but she used to be an AWESOME girl! Anyway... and SR, her plan by using "Friendship" sickened my stomach. I'm grateful Wannie is always there to put reason and a "manual on how to be human" to JY. It must be her good karma for working so hard to raise Wan to be such a decent man.

When someone who's so warmhearted and genuine feels completely betrayed and her world turned inside-out, it's very possible for her to swing in the complete opposite direction to protect herself. It's partly because she was so good-natured that she didn't anticipate how ugly people could become and so ill-prepared to cope. Since she doesn't know how to respond reasonably (since what happened isn't reasonable to her yet), she shuts down. Major overcompensation. And that can harden into some serious emotionally impenetrable walls and deadened heart.

I would put a lot of how she is now to her boss, she seemed to of transfered all her trust onto him and follows what he teaches, that is nil emotion and work first, work comes first even if it hurts your friends work before love work before trust work work work. Really he an a**hole as a person but then his love/hate girlfriend is also pretty much a female version of him.

I have feeling that she would ended up quitting her job and working on her own with not so much estres and with a truly propoaes. Because if you noticed her, and question her truly goals in her work, she is only doing it to at the end of the day, have a tap of the guy she "loves/admire/hate". Thats not a reason to keep a work LMAO. So it seems that shing shing noticed that and thats why he is battling to make her see her truly desires from her heart and when she realize that, it would be devastated and a relieve for her. If a job is a battlefield like she said, then she should ask herself whats the prize that she is fighting for and if is really worth to keep fighting. Again, i always tear a little bit when i saw him remember his childhood with her. Is soo cute yet sad.

I learned something about myself watching INR3 - that I can be shocked at myself for who I sided with in the beginning. Sure, it's based on not having all the information in front of me at first, but still - it's shocking. And keeps me alert to what is really going behind the scenes. Like how I was a Tae yooner until he used JY's network shopping fail (a couple of episodes back) to pull bad director behavior and make her feel 1 inch small, even though it wasn't the whole reason for his behavior. His character is weak and when he uses power (looks, position, status) to belittle others, just no. He could be (and seemingly was in the beginning) very charming, but instead he is selfish and mean.
Also, I had fairly high expectations of Wan and that he'd come through, but SHOCK again - at how very extra much I loved him for answering her phone and telling TY that he would not wake up someone who just fell asleep crying. And making her lunch. And dinner. And driving her. Wan Wan go Wan Wan!
But I think Wan was shocked at JY admitting the reason behind her actions in this episode - because it made him see her behave just like Se Ryung (well, worse, as he put it) and also saw that she really wants TY's attention. Wan is disappointed. Not that I blame JY really, for how she is working through all this, but from Wan's pov, he wants her to see things the way he does, and she is not which is frustrating to him. Because they seemed to be on the same page, at least relationship wise, the past 2 eps, but in reality, they are not.
Loving INR3

I must be an Evil B*tch or something, since I see nothing wrong with Joo-yeon's actions. What's so bad about refusing to be used by a backstabber? Since she does not consider Se Ryung her friend there is nothing morally wrong with asking her (single) Sunbae on a date.

The thing is, her asking TaeYoon out should be separate from her wanting to get back at SeRyung. On the surface, her actions are not wrong but her motivations are not right. Between humans, there is one line that you never cross and that is to play with the other's feelings, to play with the other person's sense of trust. What she did is basically what TaeYoon did to her last episode.
That's just low.
I mean, given giant times she's been so badly hurt, her need for revenge is understandable but Just because it's understandable it doesn't make it right.

Whose trust are you talking about? Sunbae's? She loves him, so what's the problem? Unlike Tae Yoon's actions in the previous episode she is not motivated only by revenge, hurting Se Ryong is more like a by-product.
Or is it Se Ryung's trust? Why on Earth would you consider the 'trust' of someone who is trying to take an advantage of you? I don't believe in "Turning the other cheek". There is nothing more pathetic than people who allow themselves to be used over and over again without fighting back.

I'm not talking about any specific character's trust. I'm just saying that between ordinary people, between even strangers, you shouldn't manipulate them. You shouldn't play with people, period.
What Tae Yoon did was not just wrong to JooYeon, it was insulting
and hurtful to SeRyong too.
To be honest, I was on JooYeon's side, and I liked that she served cold hard revenge to SeRyong. But I also understand why what she did was wrong and why Wan was so disappointed. Because, playing with another person's feelings, cheating another person, that's just below the belt.

I feel the same as you to a point. There is nothing wrong in using Se Ryung, as she herself pointed out. Where it goes wrong is when her feelings for Sunbae are on equal level as her revenge against Se Ryung. She should want to date Sunbae more than revenge, that should be the cherry on top, not half the cake. (I think I must be hungry)

Thoroughly loving I Need Romance 3 :)
- All the moments Kim So-Yeon and Sung Joon appear on-screen together.
- The nuances in their simple day-to-day routine interactions masked by a pretense of them just being flatmates/roommates.
- The development of Shin Joo-Yeon & Joo Wan as a couple.
- The workplace setting and interactions of Shin Joo-Yeon, Lee Min-Jung, Jung Hee-Jae, Lee Woo-Young, and Kang Tae-Yoon.
- The frenemy storyline and competition of Shin Joo-Yeon & Oh Se-Ryeong from their school years together and even now in the workplace as they both pursue career advancement and success.
- As characters their emotional traits, actions, and reactions are becoming more complex and well-rounded; exhibit a degree of consistency, and even feel to a moderate extent grounded in reality.
- Extremely impressive how each episode ends up veering in a different direction from what one normally expects to happen in a "Noona/Dongsaeng" romance kdrama.
Thanks to INR3 now whenever I see a "Sweet Potato" or hear the word, I will always think of Sung Joon.

For the first time I didn't like Se-ryung, still struggling to like Joo-yeon. Most of the show I've been on Se-ryung's side sort of, now not so much.
I do have to admit though this was a big step forward for Joo-yeon even with the fake friendship counter plan.
I worry for Se-ryung and Tae-yoon as they don't have a friendly Sweet Potato to make them human, though I suppose as they are now they're perfect for each other.

Finally I can put a finger on what this drama reminds me so much of.. The original Japanese Kimi Wa Petto! This is way more similar than the godawful k-movie adaptation ever was!
The tough as nails, intelligent, beautiful, cynical, successful, careerwoman heroine who is emotionally closed off to the world, and the adoring puppy-like younger guy who lives at her house.. Heroine opening up to hero only, able to cry in front of him only, loves coming home to a not-empty house, loves him so much that life without him will be unbearable yet is 'in love' with the perfect senior from college..
Younger guy hero sees the beautiful heart beyond the harsh facade and loves the fact of being able to be themselves with each other and that he's the only one who gets to see her beautiful tears..

I didn't watch that, but I agree that this set-up is very J-dorama.
One half of the OTP patiently helps his/her true love with another love and eventually waaaaaay at the end, they get together. I like this premise up a lot because the OTP get very close first, then romance.

I meant to comment this on the last recap: I acknowledge that I'm probably a stone-cold bitch, but I have no idea why anyone's hating on TY. He has utterly no clue about her feelings for him (especially since she confides in him about her falling in love with some other guy), so what was wrong about asking for her company to send a message to Se Ryeong? He even told her the truth, albeit after the fact.
As for his relationship with Se Ryeong, I can also understand why he feels insecure when she repeatedly does things like tell him she has "work", when she really means play poker with a group of men after hours. (I'm not condemning her, you do you Se Ryeong!) Obviously he shouldn't have gotten back with her and hoped against hope that she had changed but I suppose he caved in to his desires.
He expects mutual change and sacrifice, she expects unconditional trust. I don't think of either of them as being morally inferior or less devoted, I just think they may have chemistry but they're ultimately not a good fit for each other.
Also, I don't see his harsh workplace attitude and "you have a lot of tears" comment as out of place in an Asian workplace actually. It's never acceptable to cry at work imo.
I also liked that Joo Yeon was smart enough to turn the tables on Se Ryeong. It's refreshing to have a wary protagonist, and consistent with the worldliness of her character. It's worrying that her desire for revenge on Se Ryeong and her feelings for TY are getting increasingly mixed together, but that's what makes this show interesting innit?

It's not nice of Tae Yoon to pull that off even if he treats her as nothing more than a friend, and he can be quite a jerk at work too. Coupled with the viewers' knowledge of Joo Yeon's excitement over the invitation, many people probably felt disappointed by him.
I feel that Joo Yeon is propelled by her revengeful desire to get together with Tae Yoon more than anything (she was content to just hide her feelings earlier in this episode, and also seemed fine with their distance), until Se Ryung tried to intervene. It's definitely interesting, since she might not have done anything (shows that her feelings for TY are not that of a I-want-you-as-my-lover strong?) if not for the frenemy.

Thank you for the recaps! Just recently got hooked to INR3, I mean Wan! At this time he is the only good one. Is it the innocence of youth still? Or will he eventually get corrupted in the process? Did he take a minute or so to think about SR's proposal to sabotage possible TY-JY pairing? I hope unlike the adults around him, he will remain true. Is it adult-like or childish to scheme and be calculating? Wan, please never grow up, you see what life can do to people. Well, ok, you do need to grow up too and go through life, just maybe you will be the lucky one to have someone by your side.
Goodness, this drama is really making me think that we single people need a true partner to make us better as alone, well, we can be so flawed and miserable. Wait, is
that why we are single? Where is my sweet potato?
I am mixed on JY. Part of me was also disappointed she is going that route, but on the other hand, maybe all that is needed to establish some changes in the others involved. SR needs to see that she can't always be the one in control and be on the receiving end for once. JY needs to be able to "fight" for what she thinks she wants, as right now she is following her head, not her heart. TY is trying so hard to change SR by using JY, he needs to be able to stand on his own to confront SR and not hide behind JY. And Wan, well he just needs to come my way!
He seems so accepting right now, can't wait til something triggers in him and he too goes all crazy. All this time he has been so composed, the voice of wisdom, but he is still young and I guess needs to also overcome heartaches. I would love to see him express more emotions. The way he says I love you, it's good that he can say it so casually, but I understand how JY can not take him seriously. Not that he doesnt mean it, but I guess he is not fighting for his love, just content to be next to her at this time. Go Wan! Fighting!

This show is making me more excited than MK & YFAS!!
While JY getting more "feely" is great, and I don't know where I can ever find a man like Wan, who is supportive of JY even if she is in love with another man, what I would like to know is - if JY is so comfortable with Wan, letting him hold her hands, cooking and playing house with him, falling asleep on him etc etc....is she being callous to his feelings? What does she see their relationships as - "what" are they? "who" is Wan to her?

Finally, a lead heroine that feels real. I totally understand JY for scheming & get back at SR. I'm glad she is not the same naive girl like decades ago & can see right thru SR's plot. And I disagree with Wan. Not only JY is the same level as SR, he is too. He knew that SR is try to pull that on JY but he lets her do it. Since he is in good relationship with SR, shouldn't he said something? Why expected JY to be the good one and let SR continue to be as she is?
I know he is disappointed with JY but you can't expect ppl not to change. Human changes all the time. It is best for him to finally accept that imo, or else he ended dissapointed at JY all the time. That would hurt him.

The 3 adults are all using each another to hurt another. "An eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind", as Gandhi said. Deep down I'm happy that Joo Yeon bit her frenemy back (and many comments share the same), but essentially that's what ingrained in many of us - to fight back when bitten instead of trying to accommodate ( doesn't mean being led around by others) and find a better solution. Props to Wan for being able to break free of the "worldly" chains(?)
I didn't quite understand the part about Hee Jae's boyfriend - so he actually passed, but stayed because of her? Wouldn't she know his exams' timing, unless civil exams occur quite every month or so.

If Se Ryung hadn't first deceived Joo Yeon, then Joo Yeon wouldn't have had the opportunity to use that deception to her advantage. I have no qualms about Joo Yeon protecting herself from people who are emotionally manipulative.
Se Ryung only thinks about herself and that's why she takes what she wants with no regard for others. Joo Yeon doesn't act that way and Se Ryung knows it, and she explicitly states that, that is why she is sure Joo Yeon will not go after Tae Yoon if they are friends.
And I am not all aboard the Wan train. He gets on my nerves when he gets all preachy with Joo Yeon when he's running around being all buddy buddy with Se Ryung. I just roll my eyes when he's starts huffing and puffing and pontificating. I wish he would stop being her morality meter and realize she's a grown woman who has gone through some ish in the 5-6 failed relationships she's had. He should take his own advice and just be there for her as she makes her own decisions instead of judging her!
Why, why, why did Wan not tell Joo Yeon that Se Ryung told him she is just playing with her and has no intention of really being friends?
All the characters seem to have their arcs established, but I still can't figure out what Wan's is. It can't possibly be just him waiting for Joo Yeon to see him as a man?! And presumably fall in love with him. Wan has faults, but the story doesn't treat them like faults. For 1 he's a know-it-all who doesn't use that knowledge to protect those he loves. Also his "selfless" waiting to be loved bit, but I'm going to play homemaker meanwhile is a bit passive aggressive IMO. He makes himself quite the martyr for love counseling Joo Yeon through her love for Tae Yoon.
ok. blahh… too many words

You have a good point about Wan. I'm mostly blinded by the Sung-joon, so I'm biased. Also, I really like Namgoong min too, but his character pisses me off. Tae-yoon is so manipulative. He can't accept that his girlfriend is savvy with the politics/schmoozing side of business, so he dumps her. So immature. Then he uses another woman to get back at his girlfriend. Ugh. I'd be happier that Joo-yeon was getting in touch with her feelings if it she wasn't in love with such a jerk.

Also I don't see what Joo Yeon did as bad or scheming. It's ok to protect yourself from people who are emotionally manipulative and to go after your own heart's desires. That is different than purposefully stomping on someone else to get what you want. kdramas have a thing about redeeming even the worst culprits, but the reality is there are bad people who can and would hurt Joo Yeon in irreparable ways. I'm not going to tell her not to protect herself from that. It's false to think that striving for your own happiness will never make another person lose out.
Also people make light of what Se Ryung did in the past, stealing Joo Yeon's boyfriend, as if it's a petty thing that she should be forgiven for, but I don't think the hurt, anger, and deception she went through is a petty thing. She has the right to be mad at and to not trust Se Ryung.

I agree with you about Se-ryung. I once read a book where the female main character was the victim of identity theft. As she started to realize how deep she was in debt, her best friend, B, disappeared from her life. The main character found out that B had purposely befriended her in order to steal her financial information, then moved away and assumed another identity. The main character is the most hurt by the fact that a woman she'd thought was her friend could betray her like that - it hurt a lot more than the financial mess, which she eventually cleaned up. Towards the end of the book, the main character devotes her time to tracking down B, just to ask her why.
So I get why the friendship betrayal hurt Joo-yeon much more than the boyfriend's betrayal. Boyfriends, especially since she and Se-ryung were so young, come and go, but you'd like your friends to be true. The trust there is much stronger, and it hurts a lot more when it's broken.

I think the cookies the dark side is always claiming to have are tempting our main actress, lol.
That said, I was on a marathon watching kick before this (4 episodes in a row), but the frenemy thing made me stop. On the one hand I'm proud of Joo-yeon for not being tricked, on the other hand, I'm disturbed that she was so cold about using her frenemy to succeed in her career. Her whole philosophy when it comes to that is horrible. It reminded me of what the fantastic mom in I Hear Your Voice said, "An eye for an eye and the whole world will go blind." And I think she was quoting a man who was describing Ghandi's philosophy. Listen to her people. Listen to the coolest Kdrama mom ever.
Wan was adorable. I continue to be entertained by his fashion choices. I also like how they're dressing Tae-yoon, even if he is an ass.

P.S. I think the frenemy thing got to me because Joo-yeon is normally so passionate about her relationship with Se-ryung. To have her suddenly just calculate surprised me. And now she's going on on a date with a dude who's on the rebound...

Wan is trying to teach Joo-yeon to be a better person and says he loves her, but still keeps his friendship with Se Ryung, who hurts Joo-yeon constantly. He evn have not tried to warn Joo-yeon about the friendship plot! Just grr. Yes, Wan is adorable, but personally, I don't think I would have trusted the person who are friends with my enemy.
And I disagree about Hee-jae. First, she deserves sympathy because looks like he cheated - as the frined said that her ex stayed with his girlfrined, whom he had not left after passing the exam and its clearly not her. Plus, I am not sure how long they have dated, but girl has a right to be frustrated once in a while on having to be on constant saving mood to suppoprt her jobless boyfrined and not see that his mood is totaly set to improve the situation. So, I do not see that it was her that drove him away. He should just said he will do his best instead of constant what if.
