I Hear Your Voice writer and PD reunite for fall drama
by girlfriday
One of SBS’s biggest weekday hits last year was the strange but crackling combination of supernatural, law, serial-killer, and noona-killer drama that was I Hear Your Voice, so it’s no surprise that the network is locking in a good thing early on. SBS announced that writer Park Hye-ryun and PD Jo Soo-won will be reuniting for a new drama in the coming year that’s already got a timeslot on their fall Wednesday-Thursday schedule. Well if you’re gonna get the band back together, count me in.
It doesn’t have a title yet, but the drama will be about city news desk reporters. On the upside, this means we’re done with Sesame Street Law. On the downside, this might mean we’re in for Sesame Street Newsroom. Still, I like newsrooms as a setting, and of course there’s endless potential for pulse-pounding human drama there. The writer is reportedly following city desk reporters around town and sitting in on meetings to observe them. They released a statement that said the drama wouldn’t only be about journalists, and described it as multi-genre like Voice was. So don’t be shocked if it’s about a reporter who meets a wizard to go after a killer. Yunno, just so our bases are covered.
Writer Park began as a sitcom writer for the Nonstop series and family drama Kimchi Cheese Smile, and after a few miniseries eventually penned the first Dream High, followed by I Hear Your Voice. PD Jo Soo-won had his first solo credit with Hyena, and followed it up with Alice in Cheongdam-dong and I Hear Your Voice. He’ll be busy doing a tvN drama this spring with Yoon Sang-hyun, a based-on-a-true-story thriller about a serial killer called Gap-dong, before coming back to SBS.
The new series with writer Park Hye-ryun is being planned for an October-November broadcast. Begin your fantasy cast lists now.

Is it too soon to hope that the pd bring kim ji won into this drama after working with her on gap-dong? I just want my girl to get her hands on something good so she can finally find the mainstream success and recognition she deserves.

YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
Now get a great cast please, IHYV was proof positive of just how fantastic writer Park's dramas can be when they have protagonists played by people who can act.
(I second the suggestion above to get Kim Ji-won into this somehow. Preferably as lead, if the lead skews younger this time)

Oh I hope so too! I loved that the thought-hearing superpower in Voice wasn't over the top but relevant enough to contribute to the plot. I hope they do something similar for this drama if they're going to include the supernatural.

Excited with this director&writer combo but not too excited with the plot (which doesn't take away my interest in this show) since it's too early to tell.. IHYV's premise didn't exactly grab me when it was first announced either, but we ended up with quite a surprised on our hands.
IHYV to me is one of those shows that meshed all sorts of genres together and somehow it just worked. Maybe the tonal inconsistency didn't work for some people but it managed to grab me and i ended up loving it.

For the heroine, im kind of in the mood for moon chae won or kim so eun (i haven't watched her in anything after her BOF days but everyone seems to adore her).
Maybe han hyo joo. it's been a while since i've seen her in dramaland and i heard she's improved.
Whatever the case, we can expect some well-written characters & wonderful relationships that shine. That's definitely this writers penchant.

If they're skewing mid-twenties with the heroine, I would totally be all for MCW or KSE (who is indeed a competent actress who should have stepped into lead roles a while ago). But if it's another noona romance....the field is wide open, and there are tons of my favourite actresses who could be great in one.

I'm also feeling moon chae won.I didn't bother with "good doctor" since I don't like medical dramas, and for the male lead I'm thinking kim jae wook? That boy has earned the right to play a leading role by now plus those two would have crazy good chemistry together I think.

I have never finished Dream High or I Hear Your Voice. Dream High just didn't appeal to me, although the cast was okay. IHYV creeped me out, not just with the killer, but with the noona-romance. Normally, I don't mind noona-romances...if they're both adults. But seeing as how the male lead was still in high school, it just seemed wrong.
I hope this next drama from this writer is better and I can actually sit through it, however long it is.

The cast (namely the female lead) was precisely what put me off Dream High, it was a decent story but bad acting can really put me off.
IHYV had better actors, and I wasn't super keen on the high schooler romance either but it's one-sided on his part and she doesn't even begin to see him in a romantic light until he's been out of it for a while. I didn't find it nearly as off-putting as Big, to be honest.

Agree with your last paragraph esp. with Big. I could not in my dear life buy their relationship but it was also the way it was developed. In the beginning I wasn't too big with hye sung and su ha being in a romantic one and would have been fine with a dongsaeng-noona type relationship but the show just somehow sold the romance and i bought it. And it wasn't like it was sugarcoated too considering we hear her voice-over in the ending on how she's not sure how long they'll last but that they'll focus on the present.
I love those types of endings! I hope that YFAS can end that way too if there's no other way out for our alien.

I also dropped IHYV not because of the age difference(which is creepy now that you mention he's only in HS lol)but cause of LBY,sorry but she's a big no-no for me(sorry to her fans).

I love writer Park Hye-ryun's writing. She (I assume) isn't the type that write a super smart and sleek drama, kinda simple with cliche here and there actually, but somehow she managed to insert some heart in her writing that warm you up. And she's good at writing a flawed but lovable heroine too.

Lead characters along with the roles they'll portray:
Lee Yi-kyung as an inspiring reporter who somehow gets a near-death or after-being-dead-for-a-while situation that makes him possess a sixth sense.
Do-hee as maybe a ghost, but she's not exactly dead. It's like that Reese Witherspoon's "ghost" character. She gets involved with the reporter whom she falls for after helping him solve mysterious cases. ;)
Kim Soo-yeon as a VJ/co-reporter who has a crush on the male lead, and somehow joins in to solve the complicated cases which might put someone in danger.
How's that for a multi-genre drama? Anyway, even if this cast or plot I've made doesn't appear, I'll still watch the drama since I can trust the writer-and-director's-charming-teamwork to make the drama a hit that time. :D
