Choi Siwon headlines Chinese version of Heirs
by javabeans
I suppose that Heirs, despite being bereft of narrative movement and limp of content, did somehow manage to turn itself into a pop-culture phenomenon, and now there is apparently going to be a Chinese drama version (titled 億萬繼承, which basically means Heirs), and it will star Choi Siwon (King of Dramas). For whatever reason this remake/production/casting news makes perfect sense; now all they need to do is cast Ha Suk-jin to play the older brother role. (C’mon, with those faces, they have to play bros at some point!)
According to SM, Siwon’s management, he’ll be playing the hidden heir to a large cosmetics conglomerate who finds himself in a competition to claim an enormous inheritance. Also cast are actress Kan Qing Zi and Yu Xiao Tong, and if they’re following the Korean Heirs closely, probably half their entire generation of rising stars. Directing is Li Shao Hong, whose TV credits include 2012’s Hua Kai Ban Xia and 2010’s Hong Lou Meng. Co-directing will be Korean PD Oh Sang-won, who previously made the dramas Sad Sonata and Oh Pil Seung Bong Soon Young.
Ummm. Well, it seems inevitable that a hit as popular as Heirs was bound to spawn adaptations and offshoots. Heirs will always be one of those dramas whose appeal I fully understand yet don’t *get* personally, so I be equally unsurprised if this adaptation turned into a humongous hit for Chinese television or flopped big time. And hey, in this case the wafer-thin plot could actually be a boon, since there is little to get lost in translation. It’s mostly flirting and crying and longing looks, with a huge dash of overbearing parental interference and mean-spirited bullying. Put that way, who could resist?
The inexplicable draw of the show is also something you can’t chalk up to youth, because in an amusing reversal, Heirs is the drama where all of our parents here on the DB staff loved the drama with a surprising fervor, while we could only shrug in wonder. (Mama Beans: “Heirs is so cute!” Javabeans: “But… nothing happens and they just cry all the time.” Mama Beans: “I know nothing happens, but they cry so cute!” Javabeans: “But the characters are horrible.” Mama Beans: “Well yes, but they’re also so cute! This show is so fun!” Which is the point at which you have to just drop the subject and move on to how King’s Family is so stupid as to be hilarious, which is something on which we can agree wholeheartedly.)
Siwon will be off to China to begin filming shortly, after which he’ll have Super Junior activities to promote the group’s new album.

Heirs…Oh…Heirs….
It is the show that "could have been…"
So many great parts that added up to such a mess.
But the parts were so… so very pretty! Just… not together.

I still don't get the point of remaking a Korean drama and then using Korean actors. Aren't there young, good looking Chinese actors that can be selected for the roles.
It would be awful if they just take the cheap route and copy Heirs word for Word, like other Chinese remakes have done. There are a lot of nouveau riche Chinese and there are many stories they can tell.
Whatever, seems cheap fluff is what they are going for.

Chinese dramas and movies are almost all dubbed. They say it's to improve audio quality (because the audio quality of the mics attached to actors on scene are "not good enough") However I've always thought that a lot of them sound very unnatural and the emotions produced in the voices are just kind of off (due to the dubbing), not to mention some cheap dramas even have the audio off sync to the actual lip movements... It bothers me so much that I don't even bother to watch them (which is disappointing because I can actually understand mandarin as opposed to korean...)

I always thought it was because different actors speak different dialects. So to make it easier, they speak in whatever dialect they want but everything gets dubbed in Mandarin so most of the population can understand...and if not, there's always the subtitles. That's my opinion though XD

I'm guessing it's because Choi Siwon is really popular in China (due to Super Junior - M) and they're trying to pull in audiences from Korea as well. Who's gonna say no to a good-lookin' face?

Then cheap fluff was done adequately in the Heirs.
At least Choi Siwon doesn't make me want to throw up. I might even sometimes watch the Chinese version for the heck of it.

I didn't even know Skip beat had a Chinese drama adaptation. But this guy is Ren??? Noooo just no. Good thing I don't actually know much about this Choi Siwon guy so I can just try to forget his face now so that he doesn't cloud my perfect image of Ren.
I thought there was a Taiwanese movie? In any case, I'm not keen on looking up any of them.
Back to wondering when the next chapter was coming out...

Thus it's the saddest chapter for China, they can try all they want, but will never catch-up with the Koreans, Taiwan, Japan and US simply for the dubbing. Heard it's cheaper to dub since you don't have to worry about the ambient sound nor actor's speech, just dub over every mistake and noise, no need retakes... China, you need to step into the 21st century, dubbing is so yesterday. NO MORE DUBBING PLEASE... Give the actors their own voices.

omg don't get me started on chinese dubbing! it's annoying as hell, and sometimes out of sync, but the worse of it so unnatural.. the dubbing actors are different usually and you can tell it's not the actors voice, i mean they take some young girl and put on her this old firm voice, it's like watching the news! i wish they would stop, i'm studying mandarin and it helps listening to it, but then it's unbearable for me.. :((

I can imagine how frustrating that is for you. When watching news in a language you're trying to learn, you have to match the sounds with the lip & tongue movement: if it's dubbed it's not going to match.

February 4, 2014 at 8:37 AM
But I think one of the reasons why Chinese dramas started dubbing was because of the different accents? Even if they are speaking the same standardized Mandarin, actors from different regions have varying accents.
Anyway I recall seeing a few modern-setting Chinese dramas not being dubbed, so things are probably changing :D

Like the others have answered, all mainland China dramas (which this one is) are dubbed whether the actor can speak Mandarin or not. Taiwanese dramas are the ones that use the actors real voices.

Huh. I've known CHinese dramas to follow the plot SO EXACTLY that I wonder if they Google Translated the script... My first drama ever was actually the Chinese remake of Splendid Inheritance and when I went to watch the Korean one, half the lines were exactly the same.
I have a feeling this will be a huge hit, and I bet the Korean one was a hit in China too. I saw Lee Min Ho singing on the Chinese Lunar New Year national broadcast (which is basically the most popular program of the year)...
Siwon was hilarious in King of Dramas, but I'm positive he'll be dubbed and I hate that with a fury...

Serious question...besides the fact that the Heirs drama was prettily packaged with a good looking and well dressed cast, do you find that the Heirs characters behaved any better than the Jersey Shore people did? Young Do was a sociopathic, cruel bully. Kim Tan and Young Do got into plenty of physical fights. Kim Tan told on Young Do to his abusive father. Kim Tan randomly flipped a table at a party and spilled all the juice on the floor. Kim Tan was about to hit Young Do with a metal chair. Kim Tan became a drunk who got into random fights on the street. Rachel was a mean girl who slapped Eun Sang and pulled her hair. The adults had affairs. Kim Tan was an illegitimate child of a father who has a live in mistress. What part of that did you think was "classier", besides the fact that the cast was good looking and they wore nice clothes?

Producers put up money to remake this. They are in the business and we aren't. So is it possible that they know a thing or two that we don't?
There are many shows a year. Some you'll like more, some less. Enjoy the ones that are your personal favs; forget the ones you don't like. Is there much point or gracefulness in keep beating a dead horse?

The point is that they're beating a dead horse by producing pointless remakes. Heirs was completely reliant on the amount of star power that occupied that drama. Unless this production team shells out the cash to have way more big names than just Siwon (who of course has plenty star power himself) then I just don't see this being much of a success, even from a business standpoint.

Nothing against Chinese dramas since there are some good ones there but damn they copy everything. When I say everything I meant every single damn thing. They did a Shining Inheritance adaptation a while ago, and I could watch it's 15th episode's 49th minute randomly and be able to tell which scene it was from the original. Even the costumes, hairstyles, locations - they copied every detail it's jarring. It's like watching the same exact thing with photoshopped faces (and bad acting).
I really hope this one is better than the original though. Although honestly, I don't get why they would cast a Korean actor for a Chinese adaptation. That's weird since they have a huge pool of actors. I'm counting myself out of this one, but I'm excited to hear reviews.

To be fair, there are tons of Chinese dramas being produced. Maybe even triple what's being produced in Korea or Japan.
So a lot of these smaller copied series are often by smaller production companies that try to attach big names to it to sell.
The more original ones are done by the more established companies.

The Chinese entertainment industry film many dramas where the actors/actresses voices are dubbed. Why? mainly because the actors/actresses must be in a contract with a certain company which will allow them to use their own voice and it won't matter if they can speak perfect mandarin or not. Many of the idols/ public are trying to change this law but they cannot overpower the money grabbing and corrupt entertainment industry and government.

Kinda sucks. Doesn't really work in the actors favor -- i mean, isn't it alot harder to connect to your actor/actress onscreen if majority have the same dubbing voice. Voices can really help elevate a scene and it distinguishes themselves from other actors.
I just cannot imagine our cheon song yi being dubbed over by a generic dubbing voice. It takes away from the magic when they're in character,imo...

China has a TON of production companies. Most likely this is a smaller one that's trying to make a name from themselves and cast someone already established.
Otherwise, there are a ton of good actors and actresses there but many are already contracted to the bigger, more established companies.

so hilarious.
I dont think we need more incomprehensible stuff made even more incomprehensible by remaking it in chinese.
although I imagine an estonian version. we have very few rich people, so...no school, but just a special class for the rich kids? that would be funny. also, no one ever hires servants, even rich people. trust another human? we did not get that box checked at birth in this country. how do we even know they are human. and when does a company ever last over generations for there to even BE Heirs? the name would be "A Bunch of Wannabes Who Are Waiting For A Fairy Godmother To Appear In An Ugly Sweater And Give Them A BMW"
I wonder what every countrys´ versions would be like. I bet it would be hilarious to watch. Spain: having the sign "Siesta" on the screen for the whole hour and you wait and wait ... no change. Finland: um...power struggles in a reindeer herd? Russia: everyone is so corrupt they cant remember any more who paid who and what favor was asked.
etc etc

Spanish version would be, corrupt rich people escaping punishment and honest rich people going bankrupt because of the crises and emigrating to Germany/London. Or changing the company location to Morocco, or maybe Portugal.
Of course the servants would become jobless and the poor daughter would have to emigrate as well, since her grandparents are dead (I never saw them) and she (and her mother) wouldn't be able to live on their retirement money.
Siesta? More like short nap in the afternoon due to insomnia the previous night caused by the many job and money worries. True story.

Well, even if the Chinese version manages to lift plot, verbatim dialogue, characters, etc., from the original Heirs, it cannot be any worse than what happened (and is still happening) to the U.S. remake of BOF.
I was under the impression that Siwon spoke a fluent Mandarin? If so,at least his mouth will be forming the correct speaking motions and the dubbing won't look so stupid.

In all my years of k-drama watching, never have I been so surprised by the height of popularity this show has reached, no exaggerations.
I mean, here's how i see it.. hit hallyu shows (BOF/You're Beautiful) were even more popular but at least i understood it. They were entertaining shows that i watched with fascination. It was crack.
Heirs was so mediocre (and i don't think it's from watching so many k-dramas) with the same recycled, dragged out conflicts.. i swear in some scenes i asked myself 'Didn't this scene happen in a previous episode? im sure it happened'. I guess Heirs will forever be the oddest phenomenon for me, mainly because it was the first HUGE-hyped up (BOF/You're Beautiful level) mainstream project that i didn't enjoy.

Two words - money talks.
Heirs was so popular over there, I had a feeling it would do a remake. And I am highly certain even though it will suck so badly, it will still be super popular. So there you have it, one does not need a plot to suck in the audience. A lot of really good looking youngsters can do it - and not even really nice ones, but bully and means ones.
See two words, money talks.
Someone mentioned that it would probably be a word for word script, and I wouldn't be surprised at that either. It probably should just translate word for word - they can make more money then. People will still love it anyway. If by some strange reason this fails really bad, I will eat my words.

I agree, it's all about money and the big investors. It's not even about lacking actors/actresses to take the role, it's about jumping on this moving train to profit. Thus, having a korean actor (Choi) would boost it up even more, or I think that's what they're going for.

King's family... you ridiculously insane drama you.. Don't know why I keep watching it despite wanting to strangle and/or laugh at you 90% of the time. It's like I've moved past from trying to understand why these people do what they do to just stubbornly sticking with it till the bitter end.
Had high hopes for both heirs and KF! Though only KF did I manage to sit through all the episodes - it's crazy but at least it's not heirs-boring? Harhar

My main issue with Heirs was always its melodramatic tone rather than being fun. I really liked it like crazy when it was airing (mainly due to lmh and psh being my favorites) but now after the craziness is over, I can say that it was just a mediocre drama which was good only in parts whenever humor was there.

I didn't watch the Korean versions of Heirs, I most likely wont watch this one either. Though I have liked some Chinese/Taiwanese remake dramas because they tend to stray from the original storyline. So who knows how this will turn out.

ngl, I'm pretty sure this drama wouldn't have gotten this popular if they cast different actors.

I don't understand why this is happening lol! LMH seems to be making dramas that people insist on remaking -- BOF, Heirs…like have all the writers lost inspiration? Maybe we all need to make more sacrifice at the altars of the drama gods for better scripts…
:)

Siwon... I love you... but... are you gonna speak mandarin?
Or this will be a Chinese-Korean collab so we are gonna hear 2 languages swingging back & forth...
And if Siwon is gonna be Lee Minho's character... (assuming) at some point will he be cosplaying some "vacuum cleaner kiss"? And me the noona ELF will be going WHO'S. THAT.GIRL?

Just a thought... why they cast korean idol to act in chinese language drama? I know siwon can speak chinese but when he act he speak korean right? Then when dubbing he change to chinese.. for me its doesn't feel real.. like other chinese drama with donghae I think.. so.. why bother? There's a lot taiwanese actor... I dont know.. I just dont like when I watch a drama or movie.. their mouth speak a different language..

china is a huge country n they air dramas everyday across different provinces,so tgey ideas, stars, new elements. siwon is popular there because super junior has a huge china following so they are guaranteed some ratings.

Javabeans! I feel for you! I can just imagine you having that conversation with your Mama Beans. Frustrating for you but hilarious from my outsider point-of-view. And, I must say, brevity is now your friend.

The funny thing about Heirs is that storywise it got almost everything* right - EXCEPT the thing it was all about, i.e. the world's most boring case of Boy Likes Girl But Parents Are Mean. That and that hideous soundtrack.
* and by that I mean the writing of supporting characters who could each have held up a full-length drama on their own or at least been more entertaining/had more chemistry than the OTP- Rachel, Won/Hyun-joo, Hyo-shin, the OTP's moms, Chan-young/Bo-na, hell even Young-do.

omg flashback of Yoon Shi Yoon in that china noddle drama that I just couldn't get myself to watch cuz his voice gets dubbed.
can Taiwan make the "chinese" version instead with acutal Taiwanese actors? Not that I don't like Siwon but I want real voices.

I know! It didn't make very much sense. Yoon Shi Yoon spent much of his childhood learning Mandarin. I was excited at the possibility of hearing him speak Chinese only to be disappointed by the terrible dubbing.

I love Siwon, and I think he's a good actor, but I won't watch this. I made it through the Korean version and that's good enough for me. I'm simply looking forward to Super Junior's comeback, now that Heechul is back. And Leeteuk is coming back later this year!

It feels like so many dramas coming out of China revolve around a cosmetics company of some sort, lately...
That aside, it's too bad they dub. I know that Siwon has been highly complemented on his Mandarin speech, so I don't see the need for someone to voice-over him. But, as others stated before, all Chinese dramas are dubbed which is a shame.
