Age of Feeling: Episode 6
by HeadsNo2
There’s money, and then there’s the opportunity to fight our hero. One of these things is actually worth something in this drama’s world while the other is not—y’know, in case we weren’t clued in by everyone and their mother clamoring to get a piece of Jung-tae.
If it sounds like more of the same, it is and it isn’t. Nothing changes this episode except the story’s focus, which finally reaps the benefits of all the time it spent setting up by spending more time on the daily lives and emotions of the characters we care about. Of maybe just as much (nay, greater) importance is all the side character action we get this hour, which I never thought I’d be so happy for. Then again, side characters have never looked quite so good.
Ratings-wise: Despite Age of Feeling’s attempt to nab the audience left without programming after You From Another Star’s preemption, it still got edged out by Miss Korea. At least they gained a percentage point from all of this, going from 7.0% last episode to 8.3% this round.

EPISODE 6 RECAP
After noting that Kaya’s changed, Jung-tae tries to apologize to her. She cuts him off before he can get a word in edgewise—she’ll accept his apology, but he has to accept hers in advance.
“I will find your father,” she says. “And I will kill your father in front of you, just like he did.” That’s when she asks him to accept her apology, except for the tiny part where she adds that if she doesn’t kill his dad, she’ll kill everyone Jung-tae loves. O-kay.
Only after threatening to massacre Jung-tae and salt the earth does she finally threaten him, should he try and stop her from being terrible. Jung-tae claims that he doesn’t care what she does to him, but if she touches any of the people he loves, “You’ll see a side of me you’ve never seen before… and you will regret it.”
Kaya merely scoffs—regret is a luxury she can’t afford. She grits out that his father took away the only thing she had, so she has nothing left to lose and thus has that advantage over Jung-tae. They leave it at that.
Since traditional greetings are so passé in this world of gangs and killers, Il-hwa throws a knife at Jung-tae’s head when he walks in. (Translation: “Hello.”) Jung-tae tosses the knife back at him. (“Hello.”) Il-hwa is attempting to teach Jung-tae to always be on guard and alert, since being surprised is how he got stabbed last time.
So he throws the knife again, and it lands so close to Jung-tae’s head that it slices his ear. Il-hwa tsks that Jung-tae still wasn’t alert enough, and affects the air of the friendliest/scariest mentor one could ever meet as he easily saunters up to Jung-tae while explaining the significance of distance with regard to killing a man—first three steps, two, then one.
He’s inches away from Jung-tae with that Cheshire grin as he tries to goad him into a fight. Jung-tae claims that’s not what he’s here for, but when Il-hwa makes a sudden move to punch him his body reacts instinctively.
This is all entertaining to Il-hwa, and he does eventually get his wish by sparring with Jung-tae—but in doing so, he’s also teaching him. Gah, I’m in love with this fight scene. Not just because it’s sexy (though there is that), but because it’s so believable in showing how Il-hwa’s martial arts skills differ from the raw talents Jung-tae possesses.
Jung-tae is fairing far worse than Il-hwa by the end of the fight, though he does take pride in the fact that he made Il-hwa retreat ten steps—even if doing that much has taken everything Jung-tae has. He collapses, but Il-hwa is pleasantly impressed nonetheless.
Remember those Japanese officials Ajusshi Choi assassinated? News has made it back to Denkai in Japan, and he intends to entrust his adopted son Aoki to the task of doing something about it.
Denkai describes the people of Joseon as weeds, and that the only way to kill them (figuratively) is to kill their hope by using their own people against them. He sends Aoki off to Shineuijoo, after declaring only semi-creepily that Aoki is the method through which Denkai can live vicariously through.
Poong-cha wakes Jung-tae up after he’s had a nap in Il-hwa’s palace with his favorite food—dumplings. He remembers Kaya from her smuggling days and seems to be hiding the bulk of his concern from Jung-tae, and as always he looks out for his quasi-son by securing his transport home, since he’s a bit too beat up to train-hop his way back.
Soo-ok is intent on wooing Ok-ryun, and devises some sort of plan that involves paying a group of guys. (We all know what this is.) He finds her waiting patiently for her true love outside the train station, but any attempts to flirt with her are swiftly rebuffed.
He decides to wait with her despite the bitter cold and grows impatient as the hours tick by. I love that he’s like “I can’t leave a lady alone here, what if something happens?” Ha.
She’s still dismissive, even when he brings to her attention that the last train’s already come and gone without her man. Ok-ryun tries to hide her nervousness—Jung-tae’s always on schedule, because he knows how much she’d worry if he wasn’t.
The guys that Soo-ok hired come sauntering up and start leering at Ok-ryun suggestively, ideally to pave the way for Soo-ok to act like a hero. But instead of cowering away in fear, Ok-ryun barks back at them like she’s talking to a group of kids. Poor Soo-ok.
Ok-ryun spots something that gives her a confidence boost, so before Soo-ok can even pretend to step in to save her she threatens the thugs to run for their lives… and when she counts down, Jung-tae swoops in and takes them down in the blink of an eye.
Luckily, Ok-ryun saves Soo-ok from getting the same treatment. Just out of curiosity, Soo-ok tries throwing a punch at Jung-tae and stops his fist only centimeters away from Jung-tae’s unimpressed face. He doesn’t even blink, which seems to surprise Soo-ok the most.
But alas, Soo-ok has to watch Ok-ryun waltz away arm in arm with her tough-guy boyfriend.
Ok-ryun is her usual happy self with Jung-tae, until he admits to her that Kaya has returned. Her face falls, but instead of addressing the issue hanging between them she tries to ignore them by handing him a list she made of all the things he has to do with her on her birthday tomorrow.
Jung-tae’s face tells us that he had completely forgotten, which is why Ok-ryun came prepared. Aw. But at least he means it when he tells her, “Ok-ryun-ah… Happy birthday.”
Ok-ryun returns to the gibang to find it eerily quiet—Japanese soldiers have more or less taken over, and everyone’s fearful of making a mistake that could get them sent to a labor camp.
Inside, Aoki meets with his superior officer, who’s more than wary of his reasons for coming to Joseon. Despite Aoki being a decorated (and geeeenius) soldier recognized by the Emperor, his superior knows that the yakuza is backing him and wants him to just fade into the background.
What his superior officer isn’t prepared for is just how much of his sordid dealings Aoki is aware of, all of which he lists coolly and efficiently in an effort to bring his superior under heel. It doesn’t work.
So when his superior tries to threaten him, Aoki’s face turns to ice, and the power balance shifts in the blink of an eye. He affirms that the yakuza is indeed backing him, and because they are, he could have his superior’s wife and daughter brutally murdered and torn apart, just like that.
He all but dares his superior to test his resolve: “Are you afraid? This is a real threat.” (Side note: I don’t know if this is just leftover feels from Heartless City, but Yoon Hyun-min is electrifying on screen.)
Ajusshi Choi arrives at the gibang just as Aoki is leaving, unaware that Aoki already suspects him for the assassinations just because he caught a whiff of gunpowder on him—all the more unusual because guns have been outlawed by the colonial government.
Mama Kim cares for Ajusshi Choi and chastises him for continuing the thankless job of an independence fighter while cleaning up his newest gunshot wound. Since Ok-ryun can hear them from outside, she must know that he was the assassin.
It’s Ok-ryun’s birthday, which means Jung-tae’s looking at a long list of things he’s gotta do. First up is dressing fancy, but he eventually ditches the hat she wanted him to wear out of embarrassment. Aw.
Meanwhile, Boss Hwang is camped out at his usual table with some of the boys, including Dissenting Opinion Gangster who (wait for it) voices his dissent against Jung-tae existing. They spot Jung-tae walking about town in his new digs, and it’s adorable how Boss Hwang knows what’s up and tells the boys to leave Jung-tae alone for the day.
This prompts Jjang-ddol to ask if he might get a day off too, and Boss Hwang proves he’s the biggest softie ever by allowing it. He even gives Jjang-ddol some money so he can buy his Mal-sook “one of those head things girls wear.” GAH. I can’t even.
Jung-tae gets his salary in advance in order to do the second thing on Ok-ryun’s list (buying a present), but Dissenting Opinion Gangster has finally had enough of Jung-tae’s special treatment and confronts him for a fight.
He wants Jung-tae to leave the Dobi Gang if he loses, and eventually goads our reticent hero into throwing a punch by mentioning his likely-deceased sister.
Ok-ryun waits for Jung-tae at their rendezvous point, unaware that he’s currently being detained by his fight with Dissenting Opinion Gangster. Boss Hwang is pissed when Jung-tae wins the fight, since Dissenting Opinion Gangster was his hyung and fighting him in the first place was a huge no-no.
After he chases Jung-tae off and blames Poong-cha for the sorry state their “family” is in (aww), Kaya finds Aoki at the shooting range and even gets a little target practice in herself—her aim seems even deadlier than his.
They’ve been friends since Aoki helped her in her fight against Aka, but only as they were going through training together for almost two years did they grow closer.
She didn’t know then but knows now that he was the anonymous benefactor who shared his food with her each month, which automatically tells us that Aoki has a thing going for her. Kaya uses that in order to get Aoki to hunt down information regarding who came into town the day her father died, just so that she leaves no stone unturned.
Soo-ok is confronted by the shady employee he punched for swindling Ok-ryun, even though the employee claims that what he’s done doesn’t hold a candle to the kind of liar and schemer Soo-ok is.
Our master swindler doesn’t deny who he is, but catches his employee off guard by using lightning-fast and totally unexpected moves to knock out the buddies he brought along. Then he orders his now-willing employee to find out more about Ok-ryun.
Speaking of, Ok-ryun has resigned herself to the fact that Jung-tae’s not showing up, and earns brownie points by deciding to take herself out on a date to go ice skating, just like she put it on her Birthday List.
But Ok-ryun must’ve also saved her country in a past life—because after Soo-ok catches sight of her, he follows her onto the frozen pond while dragging a huge gramophone behind him, all, Fancy meeting you here in the middle of nowhere!
He claims he just came out to seduce women by skating to the tune of a waltz, and his charms are finally enough to soften Ok-ryun’s attitude toward him. She even lets him use the skates she brought for Jung-tae.
Haha. Soo-ok would’ve totally had this suave act in the bag if he wasn’t such a klutz on the ice—he’s got the waltz playing and he’s even got the girl, only he’s also got two left feet that keep tripping him up. This is awesome, and also the perfect icebreaker (har) for these two.
It might’ve still been fun if he was amazing at skating, but it’s so much more endearing that he’s not. This is the ice-skating date Basketball wishes it had—and if you don’t remember and/or never watched, congratulations. I mean it.
It’s nightfall by the time Jung-tae makes it to the ice rink in a desperate attempt to salvage Ok-ryun’s special day, but she’s long gone by the time he gets there.
Shinichi pays Dokku a visit after another failed round of Let’s Acclimate Ourselves to Japanese Culture, causing Dokku to immediately change his demeanor in front of his master.
He personally pulls the rickshaw with Shinichi in it, since Shinichi has a lot on his mind—Kaya had asked him if he knew where Jung-tae’s father was, and threatened him with death if he did and was lying to her.
Dokku takes a gamble on asking Shinichi for the chance to join Ilgookhwe in return for his slavery, and it pays off. All he has to do is bring Jung-tae to Shinichi, and make him fight. Again? Jung-tae should start charging people to fight him… except I think he actually does, if we’re going by the scene that opened the show.
Soo-ok drives Ok-ryun home in his car (fancy!), only to find that Jung-tae’s been waiting for her outside. Soo-ok is still the perfect gentleman, even going so far as to open Ok-ryun’s door for her, and poor Jung-tae mostly looks confused.
Before he leaves, Ok-ryun makes small talk with him in an effort to make Jung-tae jealous. It’s sweet that Soo-ok knows what’s going on and plays along anyway, at least until it’s time to leave.
She can tell by Jung-tae’s face that he was held up by yet another fight and doesn’t want to hear his apology. Jung-tae persists: “Let’s go on a date again.” Ok-ryun declines, since she has singing lessons with Soo-ok (that’s a thing now).
Jung-tae literally just goes “Okay” and walks away, like he did his duty by trying and isn’t going to play games with her. Ok-ryun caves first and accepts the date offer, but Jung-tae can’t be late again. (He’s going to be late again, isn’t he.)
Date Day arrives, and Jung-tae’s not the only person going on one—Jjang-ddol has primped himself up to see a movie with Mal-sook, which just so happens to be the same movie that was playing three years ago.
Jung-tae is instantly reminded of his kiss with Kaya after she’d asked him out to the movies, though he’s pulled out of his reveries when Jjang-ddol attacks him with some hair shellac.
Then we find Ok-ryun suffering the universal pre-date dilemma of having multiple outfit options but nothing to wear. Mal-sook thinks it’s funny considering how Ok-ryun and Jung-tae used to play naked in the river when they were little kids, and she’s sure Jung-tae remembers that there’s a mole on Ok-ryun’s butt. Aww, cute.
Despite her ribbing, Mal-sook is still a good friend, and has borrowed a pretty coat from one of the gisaengs for Ok-ryun to wear in exchange for her outfit rejects. This day is going too well. Something has to go terribly wrong soon, right?
Jung-tae even remembers that Ok-ryun wanted a ring and buys one for her, which, d’awww. But of course it’s not until she’s waiting for him at the restaurant that he is literally asked to be saved by a damsel running from the gangster trying to sell her.
So his his desire to save all the children of the world is either related to his search for his sister or just a Thing of his (no one’s arguing that it’s not a good Thing, since I believe the children are our future). But no matter what the reason is, he can’t just sit back when the girl he just saved points him to where she was being held prisoner with other, younger children.
Ok-ryun waits, and waits, and waits. Jung-tae never shows, and closing time finally forces her to leave.
Meanwhile it’s taken hours for Jung-tae to make it to the warehouse of smuggled children, which is three times longer than it takes for everyone else to teleport themselves from Japan/China to Joseon.
Only… there is no bus full of orphans to save. Jung-tae’s been duped by Dokku again, and finds himself locked inside a warehouse where he’s completely outnumbered by a bunch of gangsters with clubs.
“Are you Shin Jung-tae?” one of them asks. Jung-tae slowly wraps his fightin’ cotton around his fist as he retorts, “Remember it clearly. It’ll become a name you never forget.”
COMMENTS
Secondary romances are a tough business in dramaland, because they’re terrible to sit through when you don’t like them and terrible to sit through when you do. I keep trying to not like Jung-tae and Ok-ryun as a couple, if only because it feels like the show is dangling a manipulative carrot in front of us. It knows we can’t have it because it knows it won’t give it to us. Worse, it knows that we know it won’t.
But damn if that dangling carrot didn’t start to look better and better this episode, despite (or because of) Jung-tae’s fairly ambiguous stake in the relationship. At first I thought that he was dating Ok-ryun out of obligation, since they’ve known each other forever and because she’s always liked him. Who knows, maybe obligation is a deciding factor—it’s hard to guess when we can’t get a solid read on Jung-tae. Does he love her, or does he just want to love her?
If Jung-tae was sleepwalking through his dates (provided he actually made it to one), or if he acted as though he was just indulging Ok-ryun’s feelings when he’d rather be anywhere else or with anyone else, things would be different. Despite his relative emotional unavailability, I can see why Ok-ryun would be confused into hoping for more when he just tries so hard. It’d be so much easier for her if he was a jerk, and easier for us to write her off if he was a jerk and she still loved him anyway. Maybe it’s so hard to read Jung-tae because he’s a (gasp!) legitimately good guy with good intentions. I know, let that sink in a minute. Isn’t it foreign and strange?
So just when I wanted to believe that Jung-tae was more or less forcing himself through the motions, he goes and buys Ok-ryun a ring—which is maybe the opposite thing he’d want to do if he didn’t want her closer. And aside from mentioning that Kaya returned, it doesn’t seem like he’s constantly giving her red flags that she’s intentionally ignoring. We can’t fault him for missing her birthday because of things out of his control, but the whole point is that we always saw him trying to do right by her. Even if/when their relationship goes down in flames because Jung-tae is literally just too nice and too stupid for his own good, we’ll at least know he was sincere.
Though I’m wondering if it’d be a faux pas to doubt the sincerity of a guy who keeps getting in trouble just because he wants to save ALL the children. I mean, geez. Get a job, hippie!

I feel JT is a very sad person. He lost his only sister, and his love for Gaya is hopeless because of the misunderstanding that JT's father killed Gaya's father. OR is pushing her feeling to JT, and always wanted JT to do what she want him to do. JT was a nice guy and is appreciate all these years that OR did for him, so he just do whatever OR wants. He was kissing OR because he want to move on and away from Gaya. However, his heart is always with Gaya even when he is sleeping. His willing to fight Gaya's body guard because he wants to free his gangster brothers and Gaya. I feel JT and Gaya's love will end sadly with tragedy.

I do get the feeling that Jung-Tae likes Ok Ryun more than a friend or sister, even if i think a little part of it might be out of obligation because she's been such a huge help throughout the years. I think there is some love there, even if it's not explicitly shown(although buying the ring was a big hint). This is one of those cases in which party A loves party B more than party B loves party A. I think their relationship is cute, except for the fact that she's always having to wait on him and he always has to go out to save the world (who else was groaning when he was making his way to the restaurant only to be side-tracked by that set-up in the alley?) Of course.
I do, however, feel like he's going to fall deeper in love (a painful and disastrous love) with Gaya. He still thinks back to their kiss, and so does Gaya. I think show will be setting up for a love that cannot be between the two.
Im surprised at how much all the side characters shine like hell here. Boss Hwang is the BEST gang leader ever, Il-Hwa is possibly the most badass martial arts fighter ever, Soo-Ok is a charming ladies man, Aoki is the one who protects from afar, and Shinichi is the bodyguard who loves from afar. I was complaining about how all these characters might serve as a weak point for the show, but man each dude is pretty fun to watch, not just for their dashing looks.
My dream fighting sequence = Il Hwa + Aka

I love this show to tiny tiny bits. Jung Tae IS a nice guy with good intentions and dammit, I feel really bad for Ok Ryeon because yeah, of course we know what's coming. But maybe this show will give her a happy ending with Soo Ok early on, because Jung Tae's journey isn't/shouldn't be about the romance ANYWAY.
He's a super hero. He's supposed to be alone.
I mean, I know Gaya's gonna be in there somewhere but still, he should spend most of the drama alone and he should end the drama alone. OR he should end it in a happy home with his sister and...I dunno...I think Gaya has to die, really. We'll see.

I don't hate her. I don't hate her at all, I think she's awesome, even if her murderous rage seems a bit painted on.
I just think her arc is going to be tragic. What's she supposed to do after all this? Sit home and drink tea? No. She's going to be a warrior, of course. And so she'll die.

Statistically, how often does it occur whether in television, movies, books, comics, and etc. that...
In this case, the hero (Shin Jung-Tae) ends up with the self-reliant ("badass") female heroine (Gaya Teguchi)?

My prediction is that they don't actually end up together -- i think Gaya might end up dying, going down the same route as her mother. They keep stressing how it's important to protect her and that Denkai doesn't want to end his bloodline. IMO, this show doesn't actually end for me until the big baddie dies (denkai) and the rest of his bloodline. That includes gaya. Unless the show clears up that misunderstanding and Gaya gives up on her revenge against Jung Tae & his father.
Thing is though, it's not quite common for dramaland to churn out an OTP that is equally badass in their own ways, or self-reliant heroines because they always needed saving from the hero. Rare exceptions were from shows like K2H, Princess's Man, Nice Guy, etc. where the heroine saved the hero as much as he saved her. But it was a given from the start that they were the OTP/main leads. Here it's more of a grey area who the hero might actually end up with. I think it's because this show does not concentrate too much on the romance and that endgame is not their main focus.
Gaksital is the first show that comes to mind when i think of Age of Feeling (I try to forget that other show that shall not be named), but the hero did not end up with the badass, more independent one (Ueno Rie). But that's also because he's mainly only had eyes for Mok Dan.

I think he is an intended hubby to Gaya...
I don't think he is really adopted personally by denkai but more on the organization itself when they saw his potential as he is smart, courageous and fights damn well...
as for him harboring feeling for her, I think he has affinity for Gaya since both are at the same boat... they are being trained as 'dogs' for the organization as he mentioned in episode 4.
Anyway he is one interesting character!!!

If I ever get to attend a db meetup where we come dressed in our favorite outfit from a kdrama, I am going to wear the ever so fabulous three quarter length sleeve pink swing jacket with luscious fur trim and gunmetal grey knee length pencil skirt with a pair of white skates over my shoulder that Ok ryun sported for her (non)date-turn-date anyway. She was uber adorable, and yes, headsno2, she got big brownie points for her self-date (with an unexpected surprise).
Jung tae has all the symptoms of a workaholic - good intentions, the cause trumps all, fighting evil, hard work overcomes unfairness, but hey - in the end, no one says they wish they would have worked more and cherished those loved ones around them less. I don't blame him for his hero idealism, but I do blame him for letting it blind him to some important truths.
There is no way I cannot not fangirl Soo ok!! And right now, I am doing an episode 6 shipping of Ok ryun and Soo ok for Ok ryun's sake.

So, I really want to but I just can't get behind Gaya and her story. Her transformation was too sudden and her character growth was totally nonexistent. I wish her backstory was developed better from the beginning because I can't emotionally connect with her. On top of that, while so many actors are in character, it seems like Im Soo-hyang is acting. I know Gaya is supposed to be all badass and everything, but I can't help thinking she's posturing way too much in her fight scenes.
I'm surprised at how much I'm liking Jin Se-yeon as Kim Ok-Ryeon. She didn't do anything for me in Gaksital, but she seems so much more comfortable and natural playing Ok-Ryeon.
And I love Soo-ok (so cute and funny) and Il-hwa (so badass and mysterious). The actors are charismatic, so I perk up a little more when they come on screen.

Thank you for the recaps. Even though I watch the episodes for myself the recaps provide different sides I don't consider sometimes.
My question is, is Ok Ryeon the second lead because in everything I've read for the show they trot out the love between Ok Ryeon and Jung Tae and that Gaya and Soo Ok just have them slightly confused on their feelings? Did I misunderstand that because on Viki where I watch Age of Feeling that's how it seemed. I also read on Hanicinema and Asianwiki.

I've read somewhere, perhaps in this site's comment section actually, that Gaya is the proper heroine on the manhwa in which this drama was based upon. But then Again Shin Jung Tae was the villain in the source material.
However all fingers seems to point that it's Gaya, I'll be pleasantly surprised if it turns out to be Ok Ryeon though.

"So his his desire to save all the children of the world is either related to his search for his sister or just a Thing of his (no one’s arguing that it’s not a good Thing, since I believe the children are our future)."
It is a good thing but his tactic of just rushing in without a plan is eventually going to get him in trouble, like at the end of the episode, or get the very kids he's trying to save killed.

Actually, if you guys watched the special episode last thursday, Chung Ah indeed jumped off the cliff but DokGoo saved her. This scene didn`t air from the usual episode. The scene showed DokGoo holding Chung Ah`s hand hanging from the cliff trying to save her. So DokGoo is lying when he told Jung Tae “I saw that bastatd with your sister“ when that bastard is actually DokGoo himself. When DokGoo told JT that he saw the bastard w/ his sister, that was the time I think made JT more believe that Chung Ah is alive.

There's a special episode aired last Thurs. It is a collection of highlights from episode 1-5. There are several hidden scenes there that weren't shown in a usual episode particularly the DokGoo-Saving-ChungAh part. Actually, bec. of this special episode a lot of us assumed that ep06 (new ep) is cancelled but it's not. Ep06 still aired as scheduled. Special episode aired at around 4pm KST while ep06 aired the usual schedule at 22:00.

I not invested in ok ryun and jae tae. I think it has more to do with Jang tae ambivalence towards her. I mean someone your in love with tells you lets never date again you would put more energy into trying to get their forgiveness or change their mind he simply says Okay. The fact that he gave in tells me it's not as involved emotionally. To me it's more of a familial love then anything. With gaya it's something different between them. I know we don't have many scenes with them together but I loved the beginning of their relationship and hope the grownup version can show us what could have been.
side note- I sometimes have a hard time taking Il hwa seriously when show does closeups of his flamenco dancing shoes. lol he's not going to fight but salsa dance around a sombrero
also why didn't they use another plot device besides being delayed because of a fight and could they possible make jungtae anymore of a golden boy.

Gotta love and miss cell phones! Too bad Jung tae couldn't call Ok Ryeon to tell her he couldn't make it. My heart bleeds for her I mean she waited and waited. He stood her up twice. Thing with Jung tae is that he's hard to read. I half expected him to either run over to the restaurant to tell Ok Ryeon that he was bailing on their date or sending the girl to do so in his stead. I wondered what he would have done if it were Gaya waiting for him instead of Ok Ryeon.
Right now I'm shipping Gaya and Aoki (they would make a good match) and Soo ok and Ok Ryeon, since it's obvious that he is crazy about her. It's also obvious that Gaya and Jung tae harbor feelings for each other but I'm still confused on what couple to root for.
I can't believe that Jung tae is so stupid he couldn't guess who was behind his attack. Is he not suspicious at all? Or is he just looking for proof? And to fall twice for the same man's tricks really rubs me the wrong way. I wonder how he'll get out of this one this time.

Firstly, let me just point out that without any knowledge about Jin Se Yeon and having watched Im Soo Hyang only on IRIS 2, I came in with the drama with non-existent bias or preference to any actress, but from the synopsis and character descriptions alone I had the feeling that I would be rooting for Gaya well because I have a weakness for badass and revenge bound heroines and highly allergic to the traditional bubbly heroines. However this drama is pulling the rug off my feet, I have fallen in love with Ok Ryeon.
Where do I even begin, the girl is just loyal and devoted, she's too sweet that it hurts. She and JT goes a long way and she has been a friend that stuck and taken care of JT and Chung Ah, she has always been there in their times of ups and downs (mostly downs as JT and CA live a very hard life). It is just difficult not to like her, especially when she just keeps on supporting JT even if she has no obligation to, and even when at her own expense. I admire her as a character and she lacks the usual annoying characteristics of the traditional cookie cutter heroine, and even if she has any, is easily outweighed by the over all positives she have.
Now moving onto Gaya, I don't know if the correlation is warranted, but Gaya's over all lack of depth (as far as the story currently goes) is why Ok Ryeon shines really bright when compared to her (at least in my perspective). The moment where JT saved her from the group of thugs in earlier episodes was cute and all, but the plot did not go far enough to justify any foundations for "love", if any, all I can interpret from it is just a teen "crush" on both parties concerned. Granted, so JT rescued her, then they meet a few more times, then JT suddenly kissed her, and all of a sudden we are to believe that they have fallen so deeply in love that it's going to last a decade later? It just feels too contrived. Perhaps had the story delved deeper into how both fell in love with each other then I can properly root for them, but right now all I read from them in the strict sense of plot alone, are just good friends that happen to have a tragic twist in their relationship. Is it lack of chemistry? Or perhaps just lack of development? I would cite that there is just not enough interaction between the two to justify a substantive source of feeling, much less love, other than guilt and hatred that at this point of the drama it is just difficult to ship them two, without having a pre-conceived bias towards the actress or the character itself.
In any case it is going to be tough to establish this loveline when the foundation was shaky to begin with, it is even going to be harder especially when the plot has made Ok Ryeon too good as a choice (if a girl was ever that devoted to me I'd marry her on the spot) versus another character whose only appeal is that she's mysterious and brooding. But I guess that is the inert intention all along? Perhaps we are being conditioned to a tragic ending? Whichever it is, I'm pleasantly surprised with Ok Ryeon, she's breaking my bias.

Agree 100%. I was totally ready to love Gaya's character but her scenes are so uninteresting to me because the actress seems completely disengaged. Meanwhile, I'm LOVING Ok Ryeon…her sweetness comes off as genuine and is not exaggerated in any way. I love her character and find her a joy to watch…it saddens me that she's apparently the second lead.

for those who wonders about KHJ acting skills, well as for my observation he did improved a bit. a bit. i kind of feel like he's lacking in doing facial expression. its not fair to compare him with Kim Soo Hyun. we all know that would be mean. (sorry KHJ fans)
i have this odd habit to like supporting characters more than the main leads. i know gaya is like a badass lady but ok ryeon seems to charm me more. i'm starting to like soo ok more than jung tae. he might be the reason for me to stick to this show. lol.

I like Ok-ryun and Jung-tae more than Kaya and Jung-tae. Kaya just gets on my nerves. Kaya seems really 2D to me like her only mission in life is to kill Jung-tae's father just cause she saw him near her dead fathers body and automatically assumed he was the murderer (Okay, techinically, he did stab her father but only to make his death less painful). While on the other hand, Ok-ryun is this cute little puppy who I just cant see hurt. If ot were up to me, I would make Jung-tae end up woth Ok-ryun while Kaya can just go around killing random people who she thinks might have killed her father.

Kim Hyun Joong, Kim Jae Wook, Song Jae Rim, Yoon Hyun Min. omg, is this kind of F4 gangsters or something, lol. I totally fangirl-ed in this episode. *almost paaaridiiiseee* (sorry Hyun Joong leader)
Ilhwa's i-saw-your-big-moves lesson is hot, and Soo-ok failed-to-impress-the-girl scene is hilarious.
I still don't know what ship I'm in, because Ok-ryun is sooo faithful of Jung-tae (like she always be) and it's adorable. When she waits, I was like, "Where the hell are you Shin Jung Tae?? Just freaking GOOOO"
But Gaya, maybe-because-mokdan-aka-jinseyeon-got-gaksital-already, there's part of me of loving Gaya. And praying that Jung-tae can change back her old true self.
And Boss Hwang being so papa-bear with Poong-cha is always be the mama-bear with Jungtae's favorite food is priceless. And Dokku, gah, there's some scene I want him to be the good guy (like saving Chung-Ah) but I hate his obsession to be non-Joseonin.

Okay Age of Feeling. YOU GOT ME. YOU GOT ME. I admit it, this drama is my new crack drama. I just love it all to little bits. I don't even know where to begin. *squeals*
Kim Jae Wook is such a cutie and a hottie and a sexy and ugh, he is just so perfect in this drama I can't stop smiling whenever I see him on screen. I love his character Soo-ok and I can't wait to see what other tricks he has up his sleeves for Ok-ryeon. They're so cute together~ Gaahhh.
I'm happy that our side characters are getting a lot of screen time, especially for Ok-ryeon who is our second female lead. I'm glad to be seeing her continually throughout this drama and not just one or two scenes of her. Jin Se Yeon is doing such a wonderful job playing Ok-ryeon; she seems more comfortable playing this character.
It's a bit irritating to see Jung-tae miss out on his dates or meetings with Ok-ryeon. I know he wants to save all the children in the world, but he can't always be superman. I love how he's a good guy with good intentions, but then again, those good intentions lead him into a trap. I know that he'll get out of that warehouse safe (and injured), but I just wish that he focused a bit more on others who cares about him as well.
I really enjoy this drama for so many reasons. There's just some things about this drama that speaks to me and although I'm not so sure what it is about it yet (maybe it's all the pretty cast members in here. And the cinematography - oh definitely the cinematography), I hope 'Age of Feeling' continues to remain awesome and kick-ass.
Thanks HeadsNo2 for the recaps~ I love reading your recaps and thoughts :)

I want an Il-Hwa/Aka fight sequence too! How I envision it happening:
1. Gaya and IlGookhwe try to take over Dandong, but get steamrolled (or at least get stalemated) by Il-Hwa's impossible martial arts skills.
2. Remembering Il-Hwa's threat/warning to paint the city streets red with Ilgookhwe's blood, Gaya realizes she has to take out Il-Hwa first ASAP.
3. Gaya sends for Aka to do The Deed.
4. Aka goes to assassinate Il-Hwa at night in his mansion, but heck if Il-Hwa is going to be caught off-guard after giving Jung-Tae that big speech about always keeping your guard up.
5. Il-Hwa and Aka give each other a once-over after Aka's failed surprise attack.
6. Commence one of the most epic fights in recent kdrama history.
7. Audience --> PROFIT

I can't wait until Ok Ryeon becomes an independence fighter. In all the articles I've read about the show it says something happens and she joins the independence fighters. I feel like it will give her more depth as a character.
To be fair the drama hasn't given her much to work with. I honestly feel like she needs to get away from Jung Tae and her childhood love and become her own person. If the two are meant to be together this may finally spur a reaction from Jung Tae.
I agree that it seems like he's going through the motions of a relationship with Ok Ryeon. I don't know if it's out of duty or the fact that they've known each other for a long time.
While his character is a nice guy he needs to be honest with her and break things off. Until he is completely over Gaya he has no business being with someone else.
I like Soo Ok. While he probably isn't a stand up guy he honestly likes her and isn't just going through the motions. I think that she should at least try a relationship with him. She needs to learn that she is valuable that she deserves to be treated better.
Don't get me wrong I realize that Jung Tae was held up for legitimate reasons but I can't help wondering if it was Gaya if he wouldn't have made sure he was there.
