Yoon Sang-hyun considers chilling serial-killer drama for tvN
by javabeans
I Need Romance 3 hasn’t even premiered yet but already tvN is busily prepping the drama that will replace it, and courting Yoon Sang-hyun (I Hear Your Voice) and Sung Dong-il (Answer Me 1994) to star in it. (Both are considering favorably at the moment.)
It’s titled Gap-dong, and it’s a mystery crime drama that’s based on a real case, the infamous Hwaseong serial killings that claimed ten women’s lives in the 1980s (and served as the basis for the movie Memories of Murder). While the case was never solved (its statute of limitations has run out), the drama posits that the criminal was someone named Gap-dong, who resurfaces twenty years after the original string of crimes to strike again.
Yoon Sang-hyun would play the detective out to nab him once and for all—in fact, he became a cop in the violent crimes unit specifically for that purpose. We’re not told how, but their connection goes back twenty years. Sung Dong-il, meanwhile, plays the chief of the department who was a police inspector at the time of the Hwaseong murders.
Both actors have strong comedic streaks that have served them well, but they’re both also wonderfully adept at dramatic and intense acting too, so I love this match-up. The reports state there’s a high chance that they’ll take the drama, and with the I Hear Your Voice PD directing, that seems particularly likely for Yoon Sang-hyun. The subject material is rather macabre (knowing that it’s a true crime makes it extra creepy), and a definite change of pace for tvN, which has been cranking out the rom-coms. But I could dig a really tense, nerve-wracking murder mystery, I think. Maybe. Watching through my fingers.
Speaking of Gap-dong’s credits, they seem solid: PD Jo Soo-won also directed Alice in Cheongdam-dong and Swallow the Sun, while writer Kwon Eum-mi wrote Royal Family and General Hospital 2. The drama will premiere in April.

I am so excited for this... but it seems the wait is TOO long...
I love Yoon sang Hyun but I am especially excited for Sung Dong Il signing in, as much as I want him in a comedic role, I think it would be awesome if he does another dark dark dark like SUPER DARK role...
It would be awesome if he is the quirky/funny/approachable/kind Chief Department of the investigation who seems like he has the perfect life BUT THEN BAM!!! HE is actually the murderer/serial killer...
Kind of like Hannibal Lecter persona, but make SDI so lovable and a cuddly bear like and be a mentor/father to the young aspiring cop in YSH.
YSH who seeks guidance in him while SDI manipulates every events like he is playing CHESS with people's lives...
That would be awesome to give that evil double sided streak of Sung Dong il, I think he can do it. and he will be awesome in it...
hahaha okay I am making my own story... and not so original but I really want him in some meaty role that could raise all hair and hell....!!!

I would be so down. I really enjoyed Memories of Murder even though it sucks (an understatement, of course) that this case was never solved.
But, I also love tense murder mysteries and would be very much addicted to this.

he has always reminded me of Pierrot (mostly melancholy, occasionally ridiculously happy like a child) and in my mind I dress his characters in this long white suite with long sleeves. now I get this strange image of Pierrot trying to solve crimes and chase a killer and stumble on the sleeves.... he is always the kind of character you want to pat on the shoulder and say "It´s ok, it´s ok. Don´t worry."
anyway.... yeah he can have the necessary passion and drive to play this part too.... just pull up the sleeves.

though YSH can really annoy with his high pitch voice (but not when he's singing)....he can really make me cry in dramatic scenes....I'm looking forward to this!! He just cries so earnestly...

If Sung Dong-il signs on, I just might tune in...since he's one of my faves, and since I like murder mysteries. Yoon Sang Hyun would be an extra bonus...
I actually watched Memories of Murder a few years back (my first Song Kang Ho film) and didn't know until after that it was based on a true crime. What's especially creepy is how he's never been caught :/ It boggles me why there even is a set statute of limitations on murder in Korea...especially a serial like this.

To be honest, when I saw Yoon Sang Hyun's name (I think I'm slowly letting go of the Oska title...slowly) I was kinda like...really???
I guess cause I've always seen him in comedy (I've never seen him in anything serious to be honest); I'm looking forward to this though because crime is tied with rom com as my favorite kdrama genre (granted, kdrama is 90% rom com)

This is totally not related to the drama, but...you mean "statute of limitation". Not "statue"... >.<
Anyway...this sounds interesting and different. I'm always up for a good thriller which Korean entertainment rarely ever wonders into in drama land.
AND on top of that Yoon Sang Hyun is in it!! :D

"This is totally not related to the drama, but you mean "statute of limitation" Not "statue"
There is an old on-line law, dating back to Usenet and beyond, which states that any post correcting someone's spelling will itself have an error. Your post conforms to that law. It's "limitations", not "limitation".

YSH in IHYV: Part Deux, where he plays a gritty cop (not a cop turned lawyer), with the same PD? Yes please!
I'm guessing he's not gonna be the adorkable type for this. True crime is pretty harrowing, but look forward to watching.

That's just what I was thinking, AND I was about to post a comment on the need to do away with such a statutue of limitations. But then I saw your comment!

I really hope this happens. Yoon Sang Hyun has a very emotive face. He is very easy to feel emotions from and sympathize with. This means he can sell the frustration and all other things the characters will need to display.
Detectives can come off as very dry and boring characters if the actor playing them goes too much for "coolness". With Yoon, we can be sure the man will be approachable.
And Sung Dong Il needs to further words but the mentioning of his name. Great actor, very exciting concept, bring it on. I'm sold.

Yoon Sang-Hyun is so good. When i saw this I wondered if he would be playing the serial killer. I know he has it within him to play a real bad guy. But -- ah, me!!-- that statute of limitation thing!
