Opposites attract in upbeat rom-com The Actress Is Too Much
by javabeans
The upcoming The Actress Is Too Much is a movie that was cast and filmed a while back, though it’s only now getting its theatrical release. Touted as a cheerful, lively rom-com, the movie follows Cha Ye-ryun as a haughty fashionista actress and Jo Hyun-jae as the genius director as they fall in love, with uproarious comic moments along the way.
Normally I’d be worried that a movie was filmed so far in advance and pushed a year from its initial release plans, but the movie does sound hilarious, starting from the setup: Cha Ye-ryung plays Nabi, an idol singer who was only cast for her looks, who transitions into acting and becomes both a “goddess” top star AND known for her foot-acting and low ratings. I love that those things go hand in hand.
To provide contrast, Jo Hyun-jae plays an art film director who studied abroad, is noted as a rising star within the film world, yet becomes famous because of the erotic love scenes in his movies. I can just hear his frustration from here, as people see his movies for the sex while he argues defensively, “It’s art!” Jo explained picking the role because the screenplay made him laugh out loud; he also called it his first time doing a comedy, which seems impossible to me although I suppose his trendy romance roles weren’t technically romantic comedies.
I’m not completely sure I can imagine chemistry between these two, given that I find both actors limited in range and dependent on good projects. I’m warier of Cha than I am of Jo, whom I’ve liked through several projects (49 Days, Only You), because on top of finding her low-energy and cold, she’s played a number of unlikable supporting roles (Dr. Champ, A Star’s Lover, My Black Minidress). But maybe she really needs a bubbly leading role to find her groove, and having fun with a character like this one could be just what she needs.
The Actress Is Too Much is a rather literal translation for a title, though perhaps it’s better than its original one, She’s Lacking 10%. The movie releases on February 27.

AHHHHH, seeing this makes me realize how I miss Kang-ah.
I had no idea this project was even in the works, but now I'm excited to see the movie just cos it's been a while since Jo Hyunjae is in a project I actually like.

This looks fun, and I don't hate Cha Ye-ryun - even if she always plays villains, she doesn't strike me as a bad actress based on Golden Rainbow (she's about as good as Uee, though they could do more with her role than have her play crazed insecure life-destroyer).

She’s Lacking 10%
Heh heh heh... that's what Yoo YeonSeok's Born to sing director says the actor lacks. Although I think Mr Director was a bit kinder in saying that Yoo YeonSeok only lacks 2%. Haha! Rather than malicious, that phrase now seems endearing to me.

I'm actually scared of this actress, because she just exudes coldness in all the roles I've seen her play... brrr...
I might need to see this just so I can look at her without cringing ^^;

She not only plays cold but she looks cold too; she has this cold appearance that's just so little to like. But maybe with a better role(lets face it she always played obnoxious and unlike characters) she can somehow 'shine'.
Jo Hyun-jae! Miss him, time for a drama role...

Actually, he's currently in drama airing right now, an historical piece called "King's Daughter, Soo Baek Hyang," or just "Soo Baek Hyang," on MBC.

And he is excellent in the 'King's Daughter'. The drama is very interesting, very unpredictable with many twists,, it is quite addictive, though it is weekday 30 min drama. He and the female lead have a very good chemistry.

It's toooo long, it's probably going over a hundred episodes. Sigh. A bit too long to handle if the other leads are unlikeable. Le sigh.
Thanks anyway!

Is it just me or our Jo Hyun-jae had shave his jaw line. His jaw line used to be a bit more square and masculine and now it looks more like a v-shaped jaw line. I don't know why but in Korea, it seems like V-shape face was more favorable. Lee Min Ho & Seven for example. Their jaw line looks more like a v-shaped now than their natural shape before.

It must be Photoshop because in "King's Daughter, Soo Baek Hyang" which is currently on air, he has that lovely square jaw we appreciated so much in "49 Days." (And a mane of glory, I might add!)

Lol. Cha plays a stone cold bitch in Golden Rainbow. She has this dead-eye stare (when her scene calls for her sobbing and neck hugging and the camera pans up and shows her face, frigid stare and all. Mundo creepy!). I'm having trouble picturing her in a rom/com!

Am I the only one who gets Jo Hyun-jae and Joo Sang-wook mixed up? :/ I'd only ever watched the latter in Thorn Birds and totally thought it was him in Ad Genius until I checked out the cast list.

The plot sounds potentially hilarious, but does the male lead absolutely have to be a genius director? I'm so sick of geniuses. Can't anybody be really good at their profession through hard work and experience without being a natural genius? Oh wait, they can be - silly me, I just described the second lead.

Haha -- so basically another Choi Song-Yi? That photo where she's wearing the red dress and black hat with sunglasses is totally giving me song-yi vibes.
Of course now it'll be impossible to top that kind of portrayal since the bar is raised so high now.

There's something about portraying actors/actresses in character roles that i find wildly entertaining. So many shades of meta and focus on k-ent. They're always so over-the-top. Like Dokko Jin and Choi Song Yi. Or Choi Si Won/Oh Ji Eun acting combo of King of Dramas.

Cha seems to be in a rut playing evil, cold hearted bit...s She's wonderful in those parts, but hopefully she can break out of it.
Love Jo Hyun Jae. Why do they always have to be geniuses? Aren't there any normal, average people like us?

The has-been. But I thought her character was never anything famous to be a has been. She was more like an aspiring actress struggling with an ordinary job or something.
Anyway, I have a special list for this actress. She's on my list of Actresses I Will Probably Never Like. Jang Heejin and Shin sekyung are notable members.

I agree with Locturne, every role I have seen her in she has been cold, when she was in Dr Champ I felt she had no chemistry with Whm Ta Woong, plus she needs to gain some weight or where more flattering clothes.

Spot on when you said that they are actors you like based on the project they take. He had another drama, three dads one mum that was good.
Somehow, after watching a lot of dramas and realising how biased I am, I understood that good acting doesn't matter as much as making the character likable. If I don't like you, chances are I won't see your next project. But if I like you, I will sit through every one of your bullshit.
