Minion tryouts: Recap for Dramabeans

Anybody wanna write for us?

Despite our attempts to resist change—one might say to resist growth—Dramabeans is getting ever-larger (you may have noticed the growing pains. We promise we’re trying to work things out). That is to say, the readership and the voracious appetites are growing—but on the other hand, our manpower is not.

Dramaland keeps growing too, which is a happy occasion for viewers but a wearying one for recappers. It just keeps churning out so much new material that we finally realized we can’t do it all ourselves. Well, we knew this a long time ago but damned if we didn’t keep trying anyway. Rather than abuse our 4th dimension privileges and risk getting kicked out, we finally realized it was time to embrace growth, because not all growths are cancerous.

Girlfriday and I have always been much more interested in covering what we want to cover than in feeling pressure to cover everything, and that’s generally been our modus operandi here—because if we weren’t passionate about it, we would have burned out and fizzled into a cloud of frustration eons ago. We were thrilled when gummimochi and HeadsNo2 joined the family and love them to pieces… but we maybe also overworked them too and now we’re all tired.

So who wants to come and share in our pain? On the upside, you guys would get more dramas covered and we’d get more sleep. On the downside… wait is there a downside? Why have we not thought of this sooner.

Ideally, you identify to a scary degree with the person described below:

You love dramas. You’ve probably spent way too much time watching them, in fact. Your loved ones may have attempted An Intervention. But that’s okay, because you’re among friends now.

You can commit to writing two recaps per week on an ongoing basis. The number of hours this takes will depend on your speed, but you know it will take a regular chunk of time out of your week and can deliver reliably.

You can write a recap within a week of the episode airing. Preferably within 2-3 days. You probably understand the pain of reading an odd-numbered recap (Episode 7, say) and having the internet’s greatest jerk ruin the ending of Episode 8 for you in the comments, and vow to write faster, faster dammit, so as to never give him that triumph again.

You don’t overpromise and underdeliver. You might overtip and underdress, though, which is acceptable.

You understand Korean and/or read Hangul. Priority consideration will go to recappers who don’t need subs, but needing subtitles will not rule you out.

If that’s you, you should probably get some sleep, and then apply to be our recap minion.

Instructions

  1. Write a sample recap of an episode not recapped on Dramabeans. Don’t worry about sounding like us or using our lingo; we want you to sound like you. Make sure to include a comments section, but you don’t need to include screencaps.
  2. Tell us a few of your favorite dramas from the past, oh, five years. You don’t have to write an essay; we just want to know how your tastes run.
  3. If you have a blog, send us your link.
  4. If you could recap any show airing now (or very recently), what would it be?
  5. Email your sample to talktothebean @ gmail.com.

Deadline: Midnight on Friday, February 7

I wish the best of luck to the applicants :).

I know that change is a natural part of life and that it's a good thing that Hallyu is gaining more recognition, but I sometimes worry when things expand too much. And I really like the more intimate Dramabeans community. But I will wish for the best. It will be fun to have more writers here. Once again, good luck! :)

I'm considering whether or not to try out. I don't speak Korean (except for learning the words and phrases we hear repeated over and over again). I admit I don't know much about Korean culture (but more than I knew last year at this time!). I am naturally curious, though, and sometimes dig into the internet to find out more about aspects of Korean culture that come up in specific dramas.

I'm one of those people that refresh your blog 50 times a day(every time when I don't find something new I yell "Pali pali one more article) ", I like to write long comments, yet I'm too lazy for commitment and my English isn't great.

Therefore my wish is to see more news and gossip articles written and commented by girlfriday and javabeans. Do I need to find the 5th dimension?!? I would totally give you the secret if I could.

However @Peridot is right, Dramabeans.com doesn't have to be allkpop - after adding new staff some of their articles have the quality of a 4th grader essay - quantity over quality.

I think we need a minion or two with a slight different kdrama taste than you and gf already have. Someone that enjoys recapping makjang or week-end dramas(My Daughter Seo Young or King's Family), sageuks (Empress KI) or even bi-lunar recaps for dailies like Potato Star or Ugly Alert. For some people might be even more than entertaining.
You recapped movies, yet there are so many interesting movies to talk about.

There are so many recaps that I loved more than the drama itself like "Mi-Rae’s Choice", "Good Doctor", 49 Days or "Dr Jin" , 2 weeks - I would never watch them to the end because of the directing, subject or lack of time. There are so many dramas that I've watched because of how winsome were the recaps: "Reply 1994/1997" or "Master's Sun". And so many dramas that obsession isn't complete without a good dramabeans recap: My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, You from another Star, Arang and the Magistrate, SKK Scandal, Personal Taste and more.

I'm going to give it a shot! I don't speak Korean fluently yet but I'm learning, and getting less dependent on subtitles as time goes on. I was JUST thinking the other day how fun it would be to recap on Dramabeans, and now I see this, maybe it's a sign!

So, how does the drama selection work? Do you pick, or do we? Like, I'm watching "Let's Eat" now and loving it, but dramabeans isn't currently recapping it...(provided I'm a chosen candidate) do I call provisional dibs pending approval?

Overpromise and Underdeliver--and unfortunate shortcoming of mine...

Well, looking forward to the plethora of new dramas we get to have recapped!

Oh how I long to share my snarky comments with the world, but alas my Korean comprehension skills are extremely sub par and my hangul reading skills nonexistent. Sigh, at least I still have you, comments section.
I will just bide my time until the day a k-drama comes along with dialogue consisting solely of the following phrases: I've returned home, where are you going?, have you eaten?, what do you mean we're not blood related?, I love you, I miss you, please come back, why are there gangsters at our house?
Hmm, now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure the above phrases randomly stringed together might be an actual conversation from a k-drama. Let me check all the makjang dramas that have aired or are currently airing and get back to you.

I am a frustrated writer. I write for enjoyment but I have work and I have a very limited vocabulary of Korean language and their culture. Dang! I just have to be content with blabbing comments

That's cool. I would send in a sample, but I gave up recapping during Pretty Man. I'm more of a review person. Good luck to those who want to do this.

And this is when I get disappointed, because alas, I am yet in the fetus stage of learning Korean, and I do not feel my recapping could be as accurate as I would want it to be when relying on subs.

Can't Headsno2 and Gummimochi fill the bill I enjoy both when they recap. They would make excellent permanent additions.

annyeong everyone! I love dramabeans and want to say thank you very very much to everyone who already work hard--wrote all my favorite k-drama recaps and provided many updated news about K-star and their upcoming dramas. I can't speak any Korean, unfortunately, so it was a relief for me when I know your website provide tons of k-dramas things in english, helped me a lot in understanding the drama's storyline (sometimes I get lost in the chinese subtitle--I watched most of k dramas with chinese subtitle because it's easier to watch them through youku/tudou if you are staying in China,a place where viki and youtube are banned)

Once more, big thanks for all dramabeans family who already work very very hard..Hopefully the new members can provide many good recaps too and help many ppl like me who love k dramas but unfortunately can't speak korean..saranghae :*

I only have one question. Should the sample recap be as detailed as the ones you guys give or can we start with something a little more simpler?

I'd love to be a part of the recap minion squad..
I even started to recap the recent episode of Emergency couple to "audition". But about halfway through I realized this would take so much time! Time I probably won't have to spare. I'm about to start an internship and I don't think I'll be able to keep this up week after week, sadly. I would've loved to help out.. If in the future you still need people though, I'll be the first one to email you!

Hats off to you guys though, even with the fourth dimension privileges.. You guys are hardcore. I'm appreciating your work more and more! Thanks for the recaps!

How long would the sample should be? About 20 minutes of the episode? Sorry for the dumb question.

I'm currently reading the recaps of Miss Korea from this website. I think the writer fits perfectly into dramabeans.

I missed the deadline! D:
Why haven't I checked out DB in a couple of weeks?!
I would have loved to do this as well. I love writing, watch way too many dramas, I have too many opinions, and I blog anyway.
Maybe next time then :(
